Well another busy Rotary year, yes our clubs second year, has drawn to a close with the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield coming to the fore with their support of this year’s theme – Light Up Rotary. Whether it be the support for the Rotary Foundation, Shelter Box, Rotary Youth Programs, the local community, charities and the Adopt a Road cleanup program, this little club, the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield, was certainly a busy group. Members of the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield got together at the Spring Lake Hotel to celebrate achievements of the past year while remembering the headlines which reflected the club’s deeds of the past year: • Start With Rotary and Good Things Happen • Kids With Special Needs Gain Support From Rotary and an Inspirational Speaker • Rotary clubs worldwide mobilise in support of earthquake-ravaged Nepal • Join the conversation at Rotary and do something to make a real difference • Local Bookworm Supports Rotary Donation Initiative • Rotary Plans The Challenge to Engage Others • Rotary Sets Goals for the New Year • Rotary Supports Children With Disabilities • Rotary Returns To Cleanup Local Road • Rotary Club Supports Local Business • New Club Member Keen To Help Others • Rotary Adopts a Local Road Next year will present another challenge for this young club and it will include the important task of increasing membership numbers while maintaining our ongoing support for local and international communities. The Rotary Club celebrated the new Rotary theme, Be A Gift To The World at its first annual club changeover celebrations on Saturday 11 July at the Brookwater Golf Club when President Lee Watson and his new board were inducted by the District Governor John Crawford. The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield holds its meetings every Tuesday evening at 6.30pm at Orion Shopping Centre Springfield Central. For enquiries, contact Club Secretary Lachlan Clarke on 0409 711 199, or President Lee Watson on 0404 052 354. Rotary will help you to help others and with the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield, we think you’ll have fun along the way too.
Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis If you had three wishes, what would they be? Would they have been different when you were younger? Do you think they will change as you get older? How about when you were around 11 years old? What would they have been? My 11 year old’s teacher asked this question of them recently at school. It then went around the class with each student responding with what their three wishes would be. When she was telling me about it, I really did not expect what she said next. “Apart from me and two others, everyone said they wanted an unlimited amount of money. One child even followed this up by saying it was what he wanted because then he would be happy. I was staggered. And deeply saddened. What on earth are we, as parents, teaching our children? This school has a fairly high percentage of white collar parents, so it’s not a case of underprivileged children wanting money because of a real need. And even having said that, I wonder what the answer to that question would be from a different socio-economic demographic - quite possibly it would be these kids who would demonstrate a better understanding of what brings satisfaction and happiness in life. When I was 11, I think my answer would have been something along the lines of 1) a new Barbie doll 2) another pet 3) that my brother would disappear, or at the very least leave me alone! Yet, the majority of these children said money was on the top of their list and that if they had money, they had no need of the other two wishes. What a terrible insight into this future generation. Do these children have this view on money because their parents emphasise the need for more and more money? Or is it the media, constantly telling us that we need the latest of everything? Or is it social media, which gives a first hand insight into other’s lives and ‘all they have’ compared to us? It’s most likely a combination of all three but I would be willing to bet that how their parents view money would weigh as the most influential. Kids pick up on everything we do, say and show - even when we don’t realise it and especially when we don’t want them to! Do you constantly say you don’t have enough money? Do you show how much you value money by working extra hours on the job and spending less time at home? Do you have to have what your friends have and throw a two year old tantrum if you don’t get it? As parents or care-givers, we need to be checking ourselves. We are still the loudest voice in their world and it very much matters what we say. Have you ever heard of someone on their deathbed saying they wish they’d made more money? What they do say is they wish they’d spent more time with family; valued the friendships they’d had; and enjoyed life. Let’s not wait until it’s too late to realise what our ‘wishes’ should be and let’s help our children recognise the right things to value, now rather than later or not at all.

As a business owner, Donna tries to keep one step ahead of the market and this means having the vision, forward planning and understanding of her client’s needs as well as offering a point of difference in the competitive building market. Donna’s previous experience is in construction administration, property valuations and real estate. Donna and her partner Michael took over the Adenbrook Homes Building Franchise for the Brisbane West Region in June 2012 and have since successfully completed and handed-over 70 homes with another 30 homes in progress or waiting building approval. Adenbrook Homes - Brisbane West (Harzic Property Group Pty Ltd), employs local trades and suppliers where possible, creating a trusting relationship with both the suppliers/ trades and most importantly clients. Being a busy mum of two sons, Donna
has managed to maintain the importance of her family life whilst establishing a home building company from the ground up. Running the administration and construction workflow of the business is very demanding and rewarding at the same time. Donna said, “The key ingredient to her success has been her genuine belief in quality customer service, along with efficient management skills, to ensure clients are kept well informed of the progress of the progress of their build.” Women like Donna are playing an increasing part in the changing roles of women across the building industry. Some of the key advantages of employing and retaining women in this traditionally male dominated industry is that women are more empathetic to buyers, they manage and train staff differently. Wow - half the year gone already. Time to look at Christmas shopping! For those of you with grandchildren, I recommend the Big W toy sale. Judy and I spent a wonderful evening with our son, his partner and our granddaughter at the Big W toy sale recently. We had a great time choosing birthday and Christmas presents for her. Our National Seniors meeting last month was very interesting with Neil Coupland and Rachael Buhagiar from the Chamber of Commerce speaking about all the changes that are happening in the Springfield area. Lots of exciting development from apartment buildings, retirement homes, hospitals etc. The area is certainly growing. We also drew our major raffle that was donated by Priceline Orion Shopping Centre. Congratulations Mary from Camira who won a basket full of goodies, also thanks to Masters Home Improvements Richlands Store for providing the gift cards for second prize. At our meeting this month on the 15th July, we have Nadine Webster from Queensland Police Service to talk about Safety for Seniors. I urge people to come along to hear what Nadine has to say as there are a lot of people out there trying to take advantage of senior citizens in all sorts of ways.We also have a short talk from Nick Ganter from Calamvale National Seniors about the bus trips that they do. We meet on the third Wednesday of each month at the Springfield Tavern, Springfield Parkway 6.30 pm. Entry is $5 with light refreshments provided. For more information contact Allen 0400 525 803.

Ipswich City Council has just delivered its Budget for 2015-2016 focused on building, growing and achieving. We are dealing with growth while making sure that our residents’ quality of life is at the forefront of everything we do. We are just weeks away from delivering a new world class $13.8 million lagoon swimming pool as the centrepiece of stage two of Robelle Domain. Funding of $2.5 million has been included in this year’s Budget to complete the pool which has been delivered jointly by council and the Federal Government. The zero to over a metre depth lagoon will be equal in size to Southbank’s famous beach pool and is expected to attract up to 100,000 visitors a year. This budget is built on building key infrastructure and community programs needed in Ipswich, maintaining high levels of customer service, the strong redevelopment of Ipswich CBD and positioning Ipswich as a digital city. Building digital highways now will set Ipswich on a secure and successful path to capitalise on the ballooning digital economy. From a seed planted in 1994 with Global Info Links, we are now ready for the next stage as Ipswich the digital city. We want to be a frontrunner to attract the jobs of tomorrow to ensure residents, community groups and businesses are in the best possible position to deal with and understand the global digital future and economy. Ipswich City Council is living well within its means with the lowest amount of borrowings in more than 20 years. This puts council in its strongest to fund infrastructure into the future.
Safety first priority for new lagoon
The new world class lagoon centrepiece of stage two of Robelle Domain is set to open on 5 September with Safe City CCTV coverage. Parks, Sport and Recreation Committee Chairperson Councillor David Morrison said the much anticipated lagoon will be open in time for the end of year swimming season. The new swimming lagoon will be a much-desired attraction in Robelle Domain, and along with other water bodies, cover a total area of 2,500 square metres. This makes it one of Australia’s largest outdoor recreation facilities of its kind. The lagoon will cater for the local community and families right across the western corridor. “We are committed to a city that is happy, lively and a place where people can’t wait to bring their kids,” said Councillor Morrison. “Council will do all it can to ensure safety around the lagoon, however, I stress that all children 12 years and under, regardless of their swimming ability, must be supervised by an adult. “Enhanced lighting, landscaping, seating, bbqs and water fountains will also be installed to make this a true recreation destination.” Health and Community Safety Committee Chairperson Councillor Andrew Antoniolli said the installation of Safe City CCTV cameras in the lagoon area was part of a broader $1.3 million expansion of the network. “The Safe City network is world leading and has delivered a safer Ipswich and reduced street crime substantially. “The focus of our safe city camera network is providing safer public spaces. The cameras not only help catch offenders, they also deter crime. “In this particular instance, they bring peace of mind to families visiting Greater Springfield’s newest aquatic attraction,” Cr Antoniolli said. Picture Ipswich images gets a boost Ipswich’s online photographic website Picture Ipswich has been given a boost thanks to a State Government grant. Ipswich City Council Tourism and Libraries Committee Chairperson Councillor David Pahlke said council had been pleased to learn that it would be provided with a $5000 grant for Ipswich Libraries from the State Library of Queensland. The grant will allow the digitising of photographs and memorabilia received from donors and community groups recording Ipswich during the era of World War I to World War II. The grant ensures that a significant amount of the available memorabilia, such as photographs, diaries, letters and postcards, were digitised and available online in Picture Ipswich in a timeframe not otherwise possible using existing resources. “Currently we have approximately 350 photographs received from donors that will be incorporated into the project and we have also obtained photographs and memorabilia from the Ipswich Sub-Branch of the RSL.” The project will be completed by the end of August. Picture Ipswich has a unique position in capturing the history of Ipswich and is already known by the wider community as an important tool for both research and retaining local history. “Within this Centenary year of the action at Gallipoli, there is a strong sense of history being shown by the community and by participating in the From Selection to Discovery project, local memorabilia and images otherwise unseen can be incorporated into the larger history of the war.” Picture Ipswich is being carefully built by the library staff and the community into a wonderful historical resource for future generations. “It has grown considerably since it was launched in 2008 to contain more than 11,000 images on a variety of topics including photographs, oral histories, historical documents, films and much more.” All images on Picture Ipswich are available for the community to view at: www.picture.ipswich.qld.gov.au/ The community are also invited to contribute their own images to Picture Ipswich, with photos and memorabilia from a wide range of categories accepted. If you would like to contribute contact the Library’s Digital Archivist by calling 3810 7272 or send an email to pictureipswich@library.ipswich.qld.gov.au.

Arthritis is a common problem in dogs and like their masters, they can often suffer more in winter. Symptoms can range from stiffness to extreme lameness. The pain and inflammation is often severe and affected dogs are usually reluctant to move. This is often just regarded as getting old, but more commonly there is a significant underlying problem such as arthritis. Symptoms of arthritis include difficulty getting up after resting, reluctance to walk or even move, difficulty jumping up, lameness, aggression, change in toileting routine and licking affected joints. With winter coming on, the symptoms may be more obvious. Arthritis is more common in older dogs but young dogs can still be affected, particularly after an injury. Once diagnosed, arthritis is unlikely to disappear but it can be managed with the appropriate treatment, diet and exercise. Diet is very important in managing arthritis. Excessive weight puts more pressure on all the joints and exacerbates the symptoms of arthritis. Some dogs with arthritis can’t support their weight therefore reducing their ability to exercise and lose weight. Dogs with arthritis and excessive weight need a weight loss program. There are many effective treatments for arthritis in dogs. There are a range of treatments including oral and injectable anti-inflammatory drugs and nutritional supplements that can significantly improve your dogs symptoms. Some dogs may even need ongoing pain relief to help them enjoy their lives. Gentle exercise daily is also important to maintain joint movement and flexibility. If your dog has any of the above symptoms or you suspect arthritis, you should have your pet checked. Your dog’s health may improve dramatically with a little treatment.

The first Wednesday in June was our meeting day and our guest speaker was Tony Caswell who writes poetry. It was great to have some talent from Goodna. Tony entertained us with his poetry and a few jokes on the side. On 5 June we went to the Miners Rights Resturant at the Tafe College in Bundamba. Fifty-two members enjoyed the lovely lunch and a good time was had by all. Trivia Day was on 10 June. We all had our thinking caps on again as well as enjoying a lovely morning tea. Wi t h t h e c o l d w e a t h e r, i t was great to have a soup day on 17 June. Members made some lovely soups, which everyone enjoyed. We went on our bus trip to Boggo Road Gaol on 24 June. We left Camira at 9am, first stop was the Boggo Road Gaol where we had morning tea. After morning tea, Daniel, our tour guide, met us and told us the history of the gaol which was very interesting. He then gave us a tour of the gaol, which was very grim and cold. The gaol opened in 1901 and closed in 1989. Imust say it was interesting to listen to some of the stories he told us. It was then back on the bus to the Paddington Tavern for a lovely lunch then, on to Mount Coot-tha gardens for a much needed walk. All in all, a lovely day out. If you’re interested in joining our active and friendly group, you can ring me on 3818 9343.

Unit 1/8 Commercial Drive SPRINGFIELD Thanks to a joint project between Artslink Queensland and Ipswich City Council, Animating Spacers River Life is unfolding in the heart of Ipswich city. A number of local creatives from the Creative HeART Greater Springfield are bringing Ipswich’s rich, industrial past into the spotlight for the next two months thanks to the project’s funding. Local artists, Julie Maddocks, Dorota Lagida-Osling and Benitta Harding, have already commenced public painting of Bottle Alley Mural in the city mall. Over 27 years ago Julie Maddocks, the project coordinator, found a valuable local bottle in her backyard and this project is helping to fulfil the vision to add to the cards of Ipswich history and its unique bottle manufacturing. “Anyone willing to give a hand to the painting team is welcome,” said Julie Maddocks. A public Antique Road Show style event helped to identify a number of rare Ipswich bottles, all in very good condition. The most valuable bottle presented at the event was valued around $2,000 and was proclaimed as one of the oldest known bottles related to Brisbane settlement dating back to 1850s. Each bottle, recognised as valuable and rare is now photographed thanks to another local creative, Richard MacLaren, and recorded and added to the Ipswich Historical Society, Redbank based records. “We were thrilled to be contacted by a family member of P.J. O’Donnell Goodna Pharmacy and learn about their pharmacy bottles and other related paraphernalia. We are all looking forward to learning more about this important local business,” said Community Coordinator, Animating Spaces River Life, Jolanta Szymczyk. Animating Spaces Ipswich River Live project is culminating on Saturday 22 August together with two other locally focused initiatives. SPROUT Ipswich is focusing on a vertical garden installation using native and edible plants and educating the general public on seed propagation and #projectipswich is highlighting local textile heritage. For more information about Ipswich bottles and the painting roster, please contact Bottle Alley Mural Project Coordinator Julie Maddocks julesart@optusnet.com.au. Animating Spaces River Life project enquiries: Community Coordinator Jolanta Szymczyk studio88@optusnet.com.au. The Creative HeART meetings are on the second Thursday of each month, 7PM to 9PM at the Community Room (1st level), Orion Shopping Centre. All welcome. Goodna/Springfield
Probus Club Update by Pat van der Beek Welcome to the July column of the Goodna/ Springfield Probus Club, hope you are all staying warm and well. Remember a brisk daily walk will get the circulation going and help to ward off winter sniffles as well as giving a feeling of general well-being. June’s outing was a The Probus Club of Goodna/Springfield train trip in to Roma Street 2015/2016 Committee members. parklands and coffee at the Melange Café. Some of us then attended the lunchtime jazz concert at City Hall and enjoyed lunch in the city, an inexpensive but pleasant day out. July’s outing on Wednesday 22 July will be to the Robotic Dairy at Tamrookum, near Beaudesert. We are carpooling for this outing and will leave from the Hall in Bruce Lane at 8.30 sharp. We will make a brief stop in Beaudesert for a quick coffee (own arrangements) and comfort break. Lunch is at the Veresdale Hotel (own cost). Enclosed shoes are mandatory for this outing and please note that cash is required for dairy purchases, no credit or debit cards. June’s speakers were Gary and Nicky from ScanGuard, an organisation which alerts people to the possibilities of electronic theft. Most of us were shocked to see just how easily our credit card details can be skimmed and our whole identities stolen by the use of a simple and inexpensive skimming device. We were given sound advice and the opportunity to purchase practical items to protect against these unfortunate realities of modern life. July’s speaker will be club member Patrick Galligan who will share with us some of his family’s history in the Goodna area with particular reference to his ancestors who served in World War I. Monthly coffee dates for July and August are Friday, 17 July at the café at Robelle Domain and Friday 14 August at the Coffee club at Orion. Monthly pub lunches for July and August are at Spring Lake Hotel on Tuesday 28 July and Thursday 20 August respectively. All members are welcome at all activities and potential members are encouraged to contact Joe on the number below for details. There is no charge for your first meeting and you are under no obligation to join. Your first step is to ring Joe on 0417 288 390 or join us at 1.30pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Camira Friends and Neighbours Clubhouse in Bruce Lane (cnr Langley Road), Camira.

Over the past eighteen months, the College has been in the process of developing a Learning Analytics programme that enables staff, students and parents to view each student’s academic progress as the year unfolds. The College engaged an external company to build the programme to suit the specific needs of the College and, as such, is different and far more functional, to similar programmes that many schools use. The programme captures the progress of individual students in each subject area and over time. The programme also provides for analysis of cohort data and any external testing undertaken such as NAPLAN and includes data in relation to student effort and behaviour and learning support needs, through to absenteeism. The two greatest benefits of this comprehensive database is the fact that the data is live, meaning up-to-date to the last assessment entered. This view of where a student may be at is far more valuable than Semester Reports, which quickly become dated in terms of relevance to current levels of progress.
Page 18 - July 2015 - The Greater Springfield Times
The other key benefit is the ability to drill down and identify within each subject individual areas of strength and weakness. Data entered includes students overall grades for each assessment and also includes the grades allocated within the overall grade to the criteria used for that assessment. Rather than have conversation about, for example, improving an English grade, the conversation moves to which aspect of English will be most beneficial to focus upon. This year, the College has also introduced a formal mentoring programme for Years Eleven and Twelve students using the Learning Analytics programme as the basis for discussion and goal setting, which students enter into their own profile. During the June/July holidays, the College made student profiles available to parents of students in Years Eleven and Twelve, as a trial to rolling out to all parents, from Prep upwards, later this year. The Learning Analytics programme is being used extensively across both campuses and is proving highly beneficial in assisting students to focus their learning and, as a result, improve their academic performance. 2015-16 Budget One of Council’s most important decisions is to deliver a responsible budget. I believe the 2015-16 budget is a responsible one for this financial year and future years. Like any budget, Council must exercise discipline to deliver what we promised within budget. If you would like a copy of Council’s 2015-16 budget, please call my office on 3818 3100, email div1office@ipswich.qld.gov.au or visit www.ipswich.qld.gov.au. Lagoon Opening The official opening of the Robelle Domain Lagoon is Saturday 5th September. This day will be a day of celebration with USQ partnering with Council and organising a Springfest concert in the evening. I have heard the Beachy Boys cover band for the Beach Boys will be performing. Orion Springfield Central I have been fortunate enough to do some tours of Orion Springfield Central- Stage 2. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed. Opening is planned in time for Christmas shopping this year. Well done to Mirvac. AVEO Senior Living Australia’s leading operator of Senior Living recently announced a 15 year partnership with Springfield Land Corp to develop 2500 senior housing units in Springfield Central near the Mater Hospital. This is an exciting announcement and an excellent location. Well done AVEO Group Ltd and Springfield Land Corp. Mater Hospital The Mater Hospital in Springfield Central is on track to open in October. This is a very exciting milestone for our region. Well done Mater. Bunnings Springfield Central will soon be known as Hardware Central. Where else will you find a Masters and Bunnings side by side? You know who the winner will be. Bunnings will hopefully open in September. Carols @ Robelle Domain Thank you to Orion Springfield Central for once again coming on board as major sponsors of our community carols. Keep December 12th free as we celebrate Christmas as a community at the Orion Springfield Central Carols at Robelle Domain. Kerb & Channel When I was first elected, Old Logan Road had very little kerb and channelling or footpaths. The ‘missing link’ is now almost complete as the eastern side of Old Logan Road from Kertes Road to opposite Bob Gibbs Park is kerbed and channelled and also provided with a footpath. Now, Old Logan Road has kerb and channelling and footpaths from Springfield to the Ipswich Motorway. Free Plants The mobile nursery will come to the Camira Springfield Community Centre on Old Logan Road, Camira at 8am. Bring your Ipswich City rate notice and you are entitled to six free plants. a look back at Greater Springfield with Cr David Morrison
Springfield Central State High School Greater Springfield is built on the three major pillars of Education, Health and Technology. I remember in 2008 standing on the site where Springfield Central State High was to be built. No-one lived in Springfield Central then and I recall sitting in a meeting where parents, along with the principal, were discussing what the new high school should be called. Many of the proposed names included the words Springfield Lakes, and Cr Tully, Cr Ireland and myself stressed that one day Springfield Central as a suburb will have many people calling it home. Thankfully Education Queensland and the principal
listened and today we have Springfield Central State High and State Primary Schools in the suburb of Springfield Central. Springfield Central State High opened in 2011 with approximately 150 students and now has 952 students and is planned to have approximately 1800 students. Springfield Central State high is a vital part of the Education Pillar for Greater Springfield and last year saw the first of their Grade 12’s graduate.

NATIONAL SENIORS UPDATE PDATTE
Goodna/Redbank Branch h by Vera
Somerwil, Branch President nt
Welcome to this month’s update of the Goodna/ Redbank branch activities. Firstly a brief look back, the branch hosted a lovely morning of music and song at its June meeting with Andrew Carins and ‘Every Song has a Story’. Andrew, writer and musician, reflected on the history of his family’s early beginnings in Tasmania for many long years, in song, supported by an interesting power-point presentation. Unfortunately, the Day Trippers had to rearrange the ‘hop on hop on’ bus trip around Brisbane. This touristy adventure has now been commercialised and rather expensive for this sort of outing. Instead the group decided on a river trip on the City Cat boarding at Toowong and departing at Bulimba. There they had a look around the interesting venues in the Oxford Street precinct before lunch and returning back home. In July, the club will be hosting a Christmas in July luncheon catered for by Con the Caterer, with entertainment by Judy James singer and entertainer. Judy has entertained at many National Seniors clubs and has a wide repertoire of music from the fifties onwards. On Monday 10th August, club members will join with the Ipswich branch for a tour of the Ginger factory at Yandina. Bookings for this tour can be made at the July branch meeting. A note for your diary, the monthly Social Coffee Club on Wednesday 5th August will be at the Lotus Café, Springfield at 10.00am. For the Senior ’s week meeting on Tuesday 18th August, local researcher and author Vicki Mynott will present a historical review of her latest book, Wacol, Wolston, Woogaroo 1823-2014. This will be followed by a sausage sizzle. National Seniors Goodna/Redbank Branch meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the Goodna Leagues Club, Brisbane Terrace, Goodna, registration and morning tea are at 10.00am, with the meeting commencing at 10.30am. The next meeting will be Tuesday 21 July. Visitors are welcome, please phone our secretary Val Randle 3279 5735 for further information.
