The 7th Annual Battle of the Bands is on again this September, so register your band to play at this iconic Springfield event. To be held on September 22, Battle of the Bands talent quest is a community celebration, a charity fundraiser, and a great opportunity for people of all ages to share their talents with the community.

Starting at 5pm, there will be the opportunity for bands to compete in qualifying rounds before the main event later in the evening. There will be a sausage sizzle and drinks available which will go towards raising funds for Chaplaincy at USQ as well as an opportunity to make a donation during the afternoon.

Warm up this school holidays with the Wizards Express Little scholars are set to let off some steam with fantasy fun at Wizards Express these school holidays at The Workshops Rail Museum from 22 June to 14 July. The Workshops Wizard is cooking up whimsical fables of adventure and has a few magical tricks up his considerable sleeves to entertain and delight the young and young at heart.

Visitors are welcome to make their way through the Starlight Labyrinth before getting creative with hands on with activities, such as wand and spider making, magical creature plasticine sculpturing, plus puzzles and games.

Director of The Workshops Rail Museum Andrew Moritz said the Museum team was looking forward to providing an event that mashes fiction and fact for school holiday enjoyment.

“The world of fantasy is prevalent in literature for children and adults alike and therefore it’s fun for us to be able to create an experience for young Museum visitors around this captivating genre,” Mr Moritz said.

“Part of our bag of tricks is also providing children with an opportunity to learn without knowing it, such as stepping in to the Enchanted Forest and gaining an understanding about flora and fauna.”

With expansive grounds, the Museum welcomes little visitors to exhaust their energy with the indoor train themed playground, driving a train on one of the simulators and dressing up to play the part in the Broom and Cauldron Dining Car. For little wizards that have run out of puff, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone will be showing continuously in the Museum theatrette.

Visitors can experience the magic power of steam with a return trip to scenic Grandchester on 3 July aboard the heritage Wizards Express Steam Train, departing from the Museum’s platform. Bookings are essential and additional charges apply.

I think you would all agree that we are living in a digital age. Technology is now such an integral part of our day to day lives that it’s hard to remember how we used to do things previously.

I admit that I love new technology. I would be lost without my iphone and am amazed at people who disparage the internet and all it’s uses. Yet, in many other ways, I am oldschool. I still like to buy CD’s and nothing can replace that new-book smell or the weight of one in my hands. I prefer to actually go into a shop instead of buying online and, as much as I like to play games on my phone, nothing beats a board game with family and friends.

There is pressure on all of us to ‘get with the times’, personally and professionally. What you are holding in your hand as you read this is testament to the fact that there is still a place for ‘flesh and blood’ publications, and we are not going anywhere! As long as people keep reading our publications and advertisers keep telling us how much it benefits their business to advertise with us, we will keep producing them.

However, we do listen to feedback. There is a need to bridge the gap between what we currently have and the digital age in which we live.

Bullying never seems to be far from our attention these days. Almost every week we hear tragic stories of young people who have taken their lives as a result of having been bullied. Or a friend, relative or neighbour shares their experience of being the victim of workplace aggression in one form or another.

Amongst young people, bullying typically takes the form of physical attacks, and we’re seeing this in girls now almost as much as with boys. Amongst adults, bullying typically takes the form of social exclusion.

Being rejected socially can hurt as much as a punch to the stomach, and we see this in common phrases such as “my feelings are hurt”.

Brain imaging studies have now confirmed that during social exclusion very similar patterns of activation occur in the brain as those found in physical pain. That is, the experience and regulation of social and physical pain share a common neuro-anatomical basis. In fact, even the appearance of social exclusion – for example, being unable to attend a team game due to some unfortunate circumstance – is enough to activate these parts of the brain and make us “feel” the pain of exclusion.

Other studies have shown that early childhood abuse, or even witnessing domestic violence, cause abnormal physical changes in the brain of children. The brains of young adults aged 18-25 with no history of exposure to domestic violence or abuse were compared with individuals who had experienced verbal abuse from their peers during middle school years.

Significant brain differences were found between the two groups, with bullying victims’ brains showing under-developed connections between the left and right sides of their brain through the massive bundle of connecting fibres called the corpus callosum. They also had higher levels of anxiety, depression, anger, hostility, dissociation, and drug abuse than others in the study, all of which are associated with structural differences in the brain.

The good news is that brain changes associated with exposure to bullying or any forms of aggression can be repaired due to “brain plasticity”. For example, the ability to forgive and empathize is related to increased brain activity of areas around the left prefrontal cortex (associated with self-perception), and significant reduction of blood flow in the amygdala and hippocampus (associated with emotional regulation).

Put simply, empathy and forgiveness change brain function in relation to self-image and emotional responsiveness. Best of all, these changes appear to be sustained for long periods of time.

The take-home message is that we are now gaining a much better understanding of the brain and ways in which social experiences, such as bullying, affect the whole nervous system. Along with this we are now able to develop new non-medical treatments involving changing beliefs that in turn repair the damage caused by negative life events. This is a new frontier of psychology and one we will hear about much more in the coming years.

USQ ICT officer Glen Gorton and his friends Julian Buttigieg and Andrew Nolan will take part in a 3,500km, perilous, pan-Indian adventure in a seven horsepower, glorified lawnmower in September as part of The Rickshaw Run to raise funds and awareness for Dystonia research.

Mr Gorton said the two-week adventure will see them navigate the width of India, with no route, no support and no clue what to expect.

“I first heard of The Rickshaw Run, which is organised

by The Adventurists, through friends during an overseas trip. When I returned to Australia I’d been bitten by the travel bug and was looking for something a little more daring,” Mr Gorton said.

“I was reading about the event online when I got home with Andrew and we really just threw ourselves in the deep end without thinking about it too much and registered a team.”

The trio are looking for more than an adventure from the Rickshaw Run, they are also raising funds and awareness for Dystonia research, via the Brain Foundation.

The inspiration behind the treacherous journey is Andrew’s mother, Lee, who is affected by the neurological movement disorder Dystonia. Little is known about the disorder and there is currently no defined cause or cure.

Mr Gorton said they chose the charity because it was closer to home.

“We know Andrew’s mother and we see the pressure this disorder puts on all of the family,” Mr Gorton said.

“Andrew’s mother is his inspiration in life. She says she is on a crazy adventure every day as she experiences the worsening effects of Dystonia. For sufferers and their loved ones, the sense of helplessness can feel overwhelming and by raising funds and awareness we can facilitate research, improve treatment and hopefully, one day find a cure.’

While the boys are self-funding their expenses, they hope to attract a corporate sponsor for the entry/rickshaw fee and are open to receiving support for items they may need on their journey such as camping/backpacking and survival supplies.

Just as we age, so do our pets, just at a much faster rate.

Most people are familiar with one ‘dog year’ is equivalent to seven ‘human years’, but have you ever really thought about what this means? This means that on average your pets will be aging seven times faster then humans. Large breed dogs age faster then small breeds and cats. That’s why most dogs only live for 10-15 years (the equivalent of a human living to 75-105 years old!) whereas cats age slightly slower and will live slightly longer.

Consider the health implications that this rapid rate of ageing will have on the body of your pet. This is why we recommend ‘Twice For Life’ visits which simply means coming in for a health check twice a year. This would be like us visiting the doctors every three and a half years!

Once your pet reaches seven years they are generally considered a ‘senior’ (large breed dogs are considered seniors when they reach five years of age). These six monthly visits then become much more important to early diagnosis and possible prevention of diseases that are regularly associated with ageing such as heart disease, arthritis, cancer, dental disease, dementia, deafness, kidney problems to name a few.

Very often these diseases will show few signs in the early (often treatable) stages and many people will overlook them as simply ‘signs of old age’. Remember age doesn’t cause illness, illness causes ‘old age’.

Veterinarians are trained to detect the subtle early signs of disease, which can lead to early diagnosis and treatment meaning a longer and better quality of life than the pet might otherwise have had. Many older dogs and cats will start to develop the odd ‘lump’ or ‘bump’, and it is important to get these lumps checked as soon as they are noticed in case they are a dangerous cancers which require removal. A veterinarian can check that by doing a fine needle aspirate, and generally let you know if the mass is cancerous or benign.

Another test a vet might recommend is an annual geriatric blood test. With this blood test we can monitor liver function, kidney function, signs of inflammation or infection, and hormonal problems, to name a few. Bringing in a urine sample from your pets for their annual health check is also very important in early detection of kidney disease.

So have a good look at your best mate and think – ‘Are you over seven years old?’’ Are you a senior?’ And if so ‘When was your last check-up?’. Remember early detection of many of these common ‘old age’ diseases can allow your pet to lead a longer and healthier life.

This year’s event will include a 10km run and, thanks to the partnership between USQ and the Bremer Tafe with WCC, the Springfield Duathalon.

The Duathalon will consist of a 3km run, 15km ride, followed by a 2km run.

With the event just three months away, it’s time to start training. Now is also the time to consider volunteering for the organising team or maybe even sponsoring the event.

Preparations well underway for the Staines Memorial College Cultural Celebration Now in it’s sixth year, the Staines Memorial College Cultural Celebration, to be held on Friday August 2, promises to be yet again another great day out for local families.

As the College’s major fundraiser for the year, located at 227-263 School Rd, Redbank Plains, organisers are looking forward to an even bigger crowd than last year.

Catering to all ages, the day will include a 30 metre giant slide, a 10 metre high rock climbing wall, 15 metre giant inflatable worm maze, a lost temple castle and slide and mini golf putting green, as well as face painting.

Attendees on the day are also spoilt for choice with woodfired pizza, hot chips, pies & sausage rolls, Danish pancakes, coffee, snow cones, fairy floss and others food stalls to choose from.

Students from Prep to Year 6 will also be creating repurposed/recycled art pieces that they will be selling on the night to contribute to the fundraising efforts.

The highlight of the night will be the Talent Quest where students will have had to win auditions in order to perform on the night. Cultural dancers will also perform including Polynesian dancers and singers and Indigenous Australians playing the didgeridoo, making the night a great experience for families to enjoy together.

The rides and food stalls will open from 3pm and the night will finish around 7.30pm. Families are encouraged to BYO picnic blankets and chairs to sit an enjoy the

Red Nose Day goes wild and silly to save lives Australians are being urged to go wild and silly in support of Red Nose Day on the 28th June. Supporters can get involved simply by purchasing any Red Nose Day product, including a new range of wild and cuddly jungle characters throughout June.

Since 1988 SIDS and Kids has helped save thousands of babies’ lives through education and community awareness programs, devoting $16 million into researching the possible causes of stillbirth, neonatal death and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

SIDS and Kids have also provided much needed bereavement support to those affected by the death of a baby or child.

Yet each year more than 3,500 families still experience the unexpected death of a baby or child from a range of causes including sleeping accidents, drowning, motor vehicle accidents, sudden onset illness, stillbirth and SIDS. More than 10,000 calls are also made to SIDS and Kids for support and education every year.

To continue providing these vital support services to families in need, SIDS and Kids requires your help.

Local businesses the Loan Market and Ray White Springfield are once again holding the annual Charity Golf Day to raise funds for Westside Community Care and Camira C&K Kindergarten.

The main feature of the event is 18 holes of golf at the spectacular Greg Norman-designed golf course, Brookwater Golf & Country Club. West Moreton-Oxley Medicare Local has partnered with The University of Queensland’s Parenting and Family Support Centre to deliver a free Positive Parenting for Healthy Living Lifestyle Triple P Seminar Series Research Project in Ipswich.

West Moreton-Oxley Medicare Local CEO, Ms Sue Scheinpflug said the key to healthy living was to include the whole family.

“We believe providing positive parenting strategies will empower the entire family to be active and to eat healthily,” Ms Scheinpflug said.

Professor Matt Saunders, Director of the Parenting and Family Support Centre at the University of Queensland said parents play an important role in helping their children develop lifelong healthy habits.

“This program gives parents the tools to encourage their child to make healthy lifestyle choices both now and in the future.”

The free Lifestyle Triple P Seminars are for parents of children aged three to 10 years who are concerned about their child’s weight and want to learn more about how to encourage a healthy lifestyle for their child.

The three week program will teach parents how to use positive parenting strategies to promote their child’s healthy lifestyle and manage general child behaviour concerns. Strategies to assist in the establishment of lifelong healthy eating patterns and an active lifestyle will also be covered.

Participants will also be required to participate in some assessment. Session dates will be advised on acceptance into the program.

The John Oxley District Orchid Society will again be holding their Annual Winter Show in July at the Auditorium, Botanic Gardens, Mount Coot-tha on Saturday 20th July 8.30am to 4.00pm and Sunday 21st July 9.00am to 3.30pm.

Admission is just $3.00 (children under 14 free) and there will be various orchid genera on display, including hybrid orchids, Australia’s own native orchids, and also species orchids. These will include the more commonly known orchids such as Cymbidiums, Cattleyas, Phalaenopsis etc., but also Species orchids from around the world, many of these not commonly seen or grown in Australia.

Some orchid flowers are very large, some can be so small you almost require a magnifying glass to appreciate the beauty of the tiny flowers. Orchid flowers come in every colour you can imagine, and some are also very highly scented.

Cultural advice and potting demonstrations will be available to the public across the weekend. There will also be a well stocked plant sales area where orchid plants can be purchased at reasonable prices. All growing accessories and fertilizers will also be available for purchase as well as floral arrangements featuring orchid flowers.

There will be one major raffle of a box of orchid flowers to the value of $100, which will be drawn on Sunday afternoon. There will also be smaller on the spot raffles during the weekend.

Brisbane City Council runs a bus service to the Botanic Gardens, but off street parking is available for those driving to the venue, and there is disabled parking at the front door.

Probus Club Update

by Gwen Wise As this goes to press the GoodnaSpringfield Probus Club’s barbeque breakfast in Robelle Domaine is just days away, and we are keeping our fingers crossed that the morning will be a little less chilly than of late.

However I am sure we will have a most enjoyable morning and a brisk walk round the beautiful parklands will soon get the blood zinging.

During last year a small team of members, led by now President Local MP Jo-Ann Miller Gaye Shepherd, put together with President Gaye Shepherd an application for a grant from and Secretary Vic Wise. the Queensland Government’s Gambling Community Benefit Fund. This application was successful and we were able to purchase equipment which enables the club’s records to be kept on a single computer and presentations by guest speakers to be made simply and professionally.

In recognition of our appreciation of this grant, the President and Secretary, Vic Wise, visited the offices of Jo-Ann Miller MP to express our thanks.

The third member of the team, Bruce Lucas, was unable to attend, but was able to test our new equipment during the Club’s May meeting, when he showed slides taken during his time spent living and working in Saudi Arabia in the eighties. It was a fascinating presentation and highlighted the fact that we don’t always need to go looking for interesting guest speakers.

Since the Club’s formation in 2008 we have had several great talks by members. You certainly don’t need to be an experienced public speaker to give an interesting presentation, and the whole process is much more relaxed when you are amongst friends. Everyone has a tale to tell and experiences from our early days are so many and varied, sharing them is a wonderful way of keeping those memories alive.

We had two visitors at our June meeting. Our guest speaker was Susannah Friis, the editor of The Greater Springfield Times, who spoke to us about an Australian charity in Thailand, Destiny Rescue. We were also joined by Pam Bird from Giving with Love, a group of local volunteers who provide emergency care packages for children.

Our outing in June was a morning tea and a guided tour of Government House, followed by lunch at the Centenary Tavern.

We would like to issue a cordial invitation to all retired and semi-retired local people to consider joining us. There is no charge for your first meeting and you are under no obligation to join. Interested? by Cr Sheila Ireland (Division 9) 3810 6231 or Div9Office@ipswich.qld.gov.au The case for a ‘yes’ vote There’s an increasing amount of talk in the media about the forthcoming referendum in September to formally recognise local government in the Australian Constitution. Put simply, achieving formal recognition will cut red tape and allow the Federal Government to make grants available to local councils. This means Canberra can bypass the state government and hand grant monies direct to all councils.

This allows money to get to work quicker on projects such as Black Spot funding to improve local roads and the Roads to Recovery program. It is not well known that the Australian Government collects approximately 80% of all taxes, the states collect 16%, leaving local councils collecting only 4%. A yes vote at the referendum will allow taxes already collected to flow more easily down to councils. It is not about giving councils any more power.

Seniors Week Seniors Week will run from 17 to 25 August 2013 with a wide range of activities planned for the Ipswich region for seniors. The lakes are still under the ownership of Lend Lease however they are working towards meeting Council standards so that they can officially hand the waterways over to Council.

National Seniors Update Goodna/Redbank Branch

Winter has arrived in all its glory, in fact at time of writing this it is rather cool, with just fifteen degrees outside.

May was a busy month for branch members with a varied calendar of events. Firstly members from the branch enjoyed a great social morning at the Brookwater Coffee Club, a new addition to the district very well situated and accessible for seniors.

On the 16th May, National Seniors from Zone 101’s 13 branches attended the annual Zone conference and celebration of Ipswich Branch’s 25th birthday. The conference was held at Brothers League Club, Raceview. Nearly 200 delegates gathered together for a full day, this was despite a last minute clitch with the key note speakers. But the show must go on and it did with much appreciation. Twenty members from Goodna-Redbank enjoyed a very full day.

The guest speaker for the May branch meeting was Damien Powell from the Missing Persons Unit, Queensland Police Department. What an interesting presentation. Nobody could have guessed at how many people are reported missing weekly and annually in this state. The final activity for May is a bus trip to Wivenhoe Dam with lunch and a visit to the Folk Art Cooperative at Fernvale.

On Wednesday the 5th June the social morning for coffee and cake will be at the new Café, shopping centre, Brisbane Road, Redbank at 10.00am.

The guest entertainers for the next branch meeting on Tuesday 18th June will be the Apollo Choir. The Choir is a group for men who are interested in sustaining the camaraderie of belonging to a successful group of like minded individuals and their presentations are a mixture of music chosen to uplift, soothe and encourage listeners to enjoy the moment of music and reflection.

The Goodna-Redbank branch meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the Goodna Leagues Club, Brisbane Terrace, Goodna, commencing 9.30am for a 10.00am start. For further information please contact Val on 3297 5735.
