Welcome to the June column of the Goodna/Springfield Probus Club. Hope you all enjoyed our extended autumn with morning temperatures still in double figures in late May. Remember that the cooler weather is a great time to begin some new regular activities that are less attractive in the hot months like a brisk walk or a game of tennis. Our June speaker was ex British bobby Colin Dodd who spoke about policing in Britain in the middle of the last century. Colin joined the force in 1950 as a Special Officer in the West Midlands while also serving as a Fire Brigade Officer. He later served full time in the British Transport Police and emigrated to Australia in 1968. Among the items that Colin used to illustrate his presentation was a full sized police motor bike! Our July speaker will be Neil Kendall from Tupicoffs whose topic will be ‘How to stop Worrying about Money and start Living’. The picture above shows some of us on our May excursion to the backstage of QPAC where we were fascinated to learn what goes on behind the scenes of all four theatres. The logistics and the sheer number of people involved gave us a new appreciation of backstage activities and certainly seemed to justify ticket prices. Our outing for June is to the ‘Destiny’ Boonah Donkey Farm on Tuesday, 24/06. There are still a few seats available on the bus at $25 pp and morning tea is included in the tour price of $9. Lunch afterwards is at own cost at the Commercial Hotel in Boonah at pub lunch prices. Ring Bron on 3288 1765 or Vic on the number below if you would like to join us but be quick, bookings close soon. July’s outing is again to Boonah, this time for “Christmas in July” at the Boonah Bowls Club. This has proved a popular outing over previous years. The cost of the lunch is $25pp and we will car pool for this outing. This month’s coffee morning will be on Friday 20/06 and this month’s regular lunch at Spring Lake Hotel will be on Wednesday 18/06. All members are welcome at all activities and potential members are encouraged to contact Vic on the number below for details. There is no charge for your first meeting and you are under no obligation to join. Your first step is to ring Vic on 3271 1096 or join us at 1.30pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Camira Friends and Neighbours Clubhouse in Bruce Lane (cnr Langley Road), Camira.
Personally Speaking
By Susannah Friis with Susannah Friis
How much time do you spend on social media sites? Facebook, twitter and pinterest are fast replacing many hobbies and becoming our default when it comes to down time. I recently listened to a talk that gave some frightening statistics regarding our usage of social media and what it’s doing to our brains. It seems that part of our brain shuts down when we are using these social media sites, in order for our brain to cope with the barrage of information coming in. And when part of our brain is shut down, we become unattentive to those around us. Essentially, said the speaker, we become numb. Apparently, the worst offender of overuse of social media is my age group (which is the 40-somethings, in case you were wondering!). And the tables have, if not completely turned, at least tilted with teenagers being the ones complaining of their parents seeming addiction to their devices and wishing their mum or dad would spend less time on their phones/tablets. The thing I find interesting is that I’m noticing a real trend among my friend circle towards lessening the usage of social media. There is the, now well known, trick of everyone piling their phones in the middle of the table when out for dinner and the first to reach for their phone picks up the bill for the whole table. Families are placing a basket inside the front door in which each family member deposits their device when they come home - and that’s where the device stays for the whole evening. We need to get back to real connection. And I think the tide is starting to turn. We were all charmed by facebook, looking up old school friends and past work colleagues, but I wonder if we’re not all becoming a little jaded and have figured out that it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Recognising that really being present with people in person is far better than ‘liking’ someone’s status on facebook and having a pseudo relationship is a big step in the right direction. I’m loving the fact that my friends and I are all realising this at the same time. I recently went away for a night with three friends. The only time a phone came out was to take a photo and we sat and talked for roughly six hours! And the best part was that not one of us felt the need to broadcast our exact movements to the whole of facebook! Despite what the people who make money from social media would have us believe, we can survive without the internet. More than that, we can thrive! I’m excited to notice this hint of disconnecting from our devices and really truly connecting with those around us. How about you? Are you disconnecting in order to reconnect? If not, should you be?

Springfield toddler, Giuliana de Petro, suffers from an eating disorder which is baffling the experts. The 21 month old has not been able to eat solid foods even when pureed for the last nine months. Doctors have carried out extensive tests and are at a loss as to the solution to Giuliana’s cure. Parents Rennie and Raquel have engaged professional medical assistance from Adelaide based Lively Eaters Feeding Services, a specialist multi disciplinary infant and paediatric feeding clinic who specialise in curing children with eating disorders. This specialist program comes at a cost though. The intensive feeding program includes individual program development, therapy, speech pathology, occupational therapy, infant mental health and diet management. To assist Rennie and Raquel financially, the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield will be funding the initial costs of the intensive feeding program including the booking fee and therapist fees to the tune of $2,515. This initial assistance will go a long way to help the de Petro family in their quest to raise a total of $20,000 for the full program. When contacted Rennie and Raquel said, “We truly want to thank again the ‘Greater Springfield Rotary Club’ for all the help you are giving us for Giuliana’s medical costs. We are more than happy to give you our permission to assist us in any way with Giuliana’s cost and the good will that the Rotary Club does.” They were optimistic that the South Australian based clinic could offer Giuliana the help she so desperately needed. If you are able to offer any financial help, donations can be made via www.youcaring.com/medical-fundraiser/ help-our-little-baby-giuliana-eat/164844 or contact the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield via the details below. The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield holds its meetings every Thursday evening at 6.30pm at the Brookwater Golf and Country Club, 1 Tournament Drive Brookwater. For enquiries, contact Club Secretary Lachlan Clarke on 0409 711 199, visit them on Facebook or send an email to greaterspringfieldrotary@hotmail.com.

LEVEL 1, ORION SPRINGFIELD CENTRAL
The Swisse Color Run event held recently at Springfield saw 15 000 participants converge on Robelle Domain for the ‘happiest 5km on the planet’. Kicking off at 9am, people came from all over Ipswich, Brisbane and surrounds to be part of the sell out crowd set to run the 5km course around Robelle Domain. All dressed in white running gear, participants were showered with pink, blue, yellow and orange coloured powder (100% natural, food grade corn starch) as they enjoyed the scenic course, turning their pristine white attire into a rainbow explosion of colour. There are no winners, it’s not timed, so participants ran, walked, skipped and danced their way around the course, and enjoyed the ‘Finish Festival’, a family-friendly party with music, dancing and plenty of colour at the end of the event. The clean up is good fun too, as participants head to the Cleaning Zone where the coloured powder is blown off runners using high powered backpack wind blowers. The Swisse Color Run is not a charity event, but in each city it aligns with an official charity partner. Runners are encouraged to ‘run for a cause’. The local charity partners for the Springfield event were Youngcare and Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital Foundation. Since the first Australian event in Melbourne in November 2012, more than 200,000 Australians have participated in the The Swisse Color Run. If you missed out on the fun this time, The Swisse Color Run events will be held on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts later this year. For more information and tickets sales head to thecolorrun.com. One of the signs which might suggest to you that something is not right with your pet, is a change in the amount of water the pet is drinking or the amount of urine your dog or cat is producing. Excessive drinking is called polydipsia, and excessive urine production is called polyuria. Water intake depends on the type of food the pet is eating. Pets that are fed a fresh or tinned diet will get most of their water requirements from their food, and usually will not be noticed to drink much at all. If they eat mainly dried foods, they will drink more. The amount of water dogs and cats drink is different for each pet but they will drink more in hot weather. The water balance in the body is largely controlled by the kidneys. Water taken in by mouth is absorbed from the intestine into the bloodstream. Fluid is filtered from the blood by one part of the kidneys (the glomeruli) and is reabsorbed into the blood from another part of the kidneys (the tubules). If a lot of fluid is reabsorbed, less urine is produced. If less fluid is reabsorbed, more urine is produced. Animals respond to loss of fluid from the body by drinking more to replace it. Therefore, anything that interferes with reabsorption of fluid by the kidneys will result in an increase in drinking by the pet. Many disease processes can affect kidney function. Obviously, primary kidney disease is one, although it has to be quite advanced before urine concentrating ability is lost. Kidney function is also affected by bacterial toxins, for example in urinary tract or reproductive tract infections, the presence of glucose (sugar) in the urine, as occurs in diabetes, and by certain other hormonal diseases such as overactive adrenal glands or thyroid glands, or deficiency of some pituitary gland hormones. The balance of calcium and electrolytes in the blood also affects kidney function, and these can be abnormal with some tumours, adrenal insufficiency and whipworm infections. Liver disease also affects kidney function. Occasionally, a dog or cat may drink excessively for purely psychological reasons, although this can really only be diagnosed by eliminating all the physical causes. As you can see, polydipsia and polyuria can indicate a wide range of disorders. If you notice these signs in your cat or dog, have a vet examine your pet, and if possible, bring a urine sample for analysis. Many of the conditions described can be managed effectively, and the earlier a diagnosis is made, the better it will be.
Help an animal in need this winter
Have you ever wondered what happened to that poor stray dog you saw walking across the road? Or the stray cat that ran under the car? South East Queensland Animal Rescue is what happens, stepping in to support animals. Based in Brisbane, this non-profit rescue group has taken in and rehomed more than 730 animals since opening its doors in March of 2012. After discovering a litter of underweight and neglected puppies in a bin near her previous workplace, Tam Davis knew she needed to help animals and took on the huge task of founding and running South East Queensland Animal Rescue with the goal to save as many lives as possible. Now she needs your help! Taking in all kinds of animals from cats to dogs to chickens and even peacocks, staff at South East Queensland Animal Rescue have had an unusually busy summer. For non profit rescue groups who rely purely on donations from the public, this can cause a strain and unfortunately result in animals who are in need of new homes being turned away simply because the animal rescue group can’t afford to feed them or don’t have anywhere to house them. South East Queensland Animal Rescue are asking residents for a small donation to assist them in taking in and rehoming even more animals over the coming winter. Donations can include linen, food, animal bedding, bowls and various other animal products. If you, or someone you know, can help or if you would like to know more about the rescue, please contact them at seqanimalrescue@hotmail.com or follow them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SEQAnimalRescue.

La Vie Dance UP! another success The postponement of the La Vie Dance UP! competition didn’t stop thousands attending to enjoy not only the dance competition but rides, food, stalls and fireworks. Locals were also treated to performances featuring the Watoto Childrens Choir as part of the Motorama City Holden Family Funday hosted by Westside Community Care and Springfield Christian Family, in combination with the La Vie Dance UP!. “The Watoto Choir were brilliant, as expected, performing in the afternoon and then again just before the Loan Market fireworks at the end of the night,” said Phil Cutcliffe. The La Vie Dance UP! featured 20 groups performing with many different styles, with Vandyllz winning overall champions on the night. The Winning Dance Troupe for a group five or more were from Mill St Studios, as were the runners up in this category. The Winning Dance Group of four or less was won by local Springfield teen, Emily Dennis and her dance partner Lauren Hooper from Forest Lake. Both girls attend Monika’s Dance Studio Unlimited. Other outstanding performers on the night included defending champions Studio of Performing Arts, as well as Prestige Dance Studio, Serendipity Dance and Springfield Central State High School.

Got a story to tell? Young wordsmiths have a chance to win $2,000
Aspiring young writers are invited to enter State Library of Queensland’s annual Young Writers Award for the chance to win $2,000. Now in its nineteenth year, the Young Writers Award is continuing to foster the next generation of Queensland’s budding writing talent, with entries open to Queensland residents aged 18 to 25. “The flourishing careers of previous winners, runners up and entrants from the Young Writers Award have inspired confidence and determination in future writers,” State Librarian Janette Wright said. 2013 winner Kahli Scott’s (pictured) winning short story Lingerie has since been featured on Birdee, an online magazine for young girls, and Kahli has begun work on a novel-length project that expands on the themes and tone of Lingerie using a new set of characters. The 2014 submissions will be assessed by a judging panel comprised of local authors, journalists and editors, including Frances Whiting (Sunday Mail columnist), Simon Groth (Concentrate), Ellen van Neerven (2013 David Unaipon Award winner) and Jarryd Luke (Director, Townsville Writers & Publishers Centre Inc). The Young Writers Award winner and first runner up will receive $2,000 and $500 prize money respectively, along with a 12 month membership to the Queensland Writers Centre and the Australian Writer’s Marketplace online, and admission to a Brisbane Writers Festival seminar and Queensland Writers Centre industry seminar. Entries close at 5pm on Friday 18 July 2014. For full details on the application process or to pick up short story writing tips, visit slq.qld.gov.au/whats-on/awards/ywa The Young Writers Award is funded by the Library Board of Queensland, and supported by Queensland Writers Centre, Brisbane Writers Festival, and the Australian Writer’s Marketplace.

Springfield based councillor David Morrison was on hand to witness the final horizontal beams being placed on Ipswich’s newest bridge on Eden Station Drive last month. Eden Station Drive is a well anticipated connection between Augusta Parkway and Springfield Greenbank Arterial. Cr Morrison said the contractors have done a wonderful job in delivering the bridge, with 66 concrete spans at 13m in length completing the horizontal platform of the bridge. Eden Station Drive is named after the homestead that James Josey and his family built on the hill closest to where the new road is being constructed. With the total cost of the road and bridge to be approximately $11 million, Eden Station Drive is planned to be open at the end of July or early August.

This month we welcome new columnist, Kathy Ballantyne. As you’ll read below, Kathy has been in the Springfield community for ten years and we’re excited to have her writing for us. Welcome Kathy! ~ Ed. Kathy Ballantyne is based at Springfield Superclinic in Commercial Drive, Springfield and is probably the longest established Psychologist and Counsellor in Springfield, having been here since 2004. She will be presenting a column for your reading enjoyment in The Greater Springfield Times over the next few months. Kathy Ballantyne was born in Glasgow, Scotland and came to live in Australia in 1981. In 1987, Kathy was expecting her first child when she was living in country Victoria. She developed an interest in child psychology which led eventually to her taking a degree course in Psychology at Monash University in Victoria, obtaining her degree in 1995 and a post graduate B.Sc. in 1996. She then became increasingly interested in other areas of psychology such as mind-body medicine, how the mind can influence some parts of our bodies and how our bodies can also influence our minds. Kathy also developed a keen interest in Hypnotherapy and how that can also influence the body and psyche of an individual and so she trained in that area also. She is perhaps best known locally for her work in the hypnotherapy treatment of weight loss using a technique called Virtual Gastric Banding. Kathy developed an insatiable desire to learn and improve her knowledge and has trained, amongst other things, in mediation, Triple P Parenting (which assists parents in managing the behaviour of their children), NLP and Timeline Therapy, the neuroscience of anxiety and depression, trauma recovery techniques and Positive Psychology under Dr. Martin Seligman, the father of Positive Psychology. Her latest learning phrase is directed at how couples can become closer and happier through Attachment Therapy which uses brain patterns to improve relationships. In short, Kathy has always had a great interest in expanding her knowledge and is fascinated by all the new developments in the knowledge of the mind, knowledge she brings to her work for the benefit of her patients. Kathy has worked extensively as a Psychologist in the rural and outback regions of Australia, including six years in Port Hedland where much of her work was with the indigenous and various ethnic populations. She has worked for Queensland Police in Roma Street and also in the prison at Wacol. For the past 10 years she has had her own practice, Counselling Australia, in Springfield and also in Kenmore Hills. She is a registered Medicare Provider offering Health Fund rebates and Medicare Rebates (with a doctor’s referral) for Counselling, Hypnotherapy and Psychology. Her approach is to treat the cause instead of the symptoms. As well as always being on a continuous learning curve, Kathy has wide ranging interests in music, theatre and travel, particularly in hitching up the family camper trailer and disappearing into the outback or to a nice beach for some quiet reading and contemplation.

A message from the Mayor’s Desk BY THE MAYOR - PAUL PISASALE
Winter has arrived and while Queensland is lucky to not suffer too much of the cold weather, it is nice to get out of the cooler elements with some of our indoor entertainment. The Ipswich Art Gallery, Ipswich Civic Centre and Studio 188 are making a tremendous contribution to our city’s cultural life but more importantly, all three venues are bringing new audiences and more potential customers to surrounding businesses. The July to September program for the Ipswich Civic Centre and Studio 188 is about to be released and is full of exciting shows and local, national and international performers. The Ipswich Art Gallery has some exciting school holiday activities coming up but at the moment Wind Tubes is the latest exhibition and is proving to be a hit with young families. The City of Ipswich truly is a great place for entertainment, culture, dining and fun and each time you visit there’s always something new to be discovered.
Three times double trouble at Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School
L-R: Twins Logan and Jake Precians, Grade 1; twins Max and Matthew Senica, Grade 4/5 and twins Lucy and Henry Clayton, Grade 1.
Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School opened in January, 2013 with approximately 70 students. Over the last 18 months, the student population has grown to 113 students. An interesting factor is that within this relatively small population the school currently has three sets of twins attending. After the mid-year break, twin girls will also join the school community, with 2015 seeing Prep twins welcomed to the school as well, which will bring the twin total to five.

Looking for women to make a difference in Springfield Soroptimist International business and professional women’s organisation is developing a club in the local area, and is seeking women who’d like to make a difference to their community. The organisation aims to educate, empower and enable women and girls locally, nationally and internationally. Once chartered, clubs develop their own local projects to address a variety of needs in their community. The local group is hosting a fundraiser for the Cancer Council of Queensland on June 15. As well, Australian clubs work with sister clubs in developing countries to address issues particularly in the spheres of health, education and violence against women and girls. Such current international projects involving Brisbane clubs include the provision of full boarding school scholarships for students in Kenya enabling girls to complete their four years of secondary education and the donation of sewing machines and sewing consumables for students in a PNG high school. If you’d like to become a member of the local club, please contact Shelley on 0419 546 013. Currently meetings are held on the first and third Mondays of each month in the Community Room at Orion Shopping Centre, starting at 7.00pm.

Camira Friends and Neighbours update by Pat Quickfall The first Wednesday of the month, we did not have a guest speaker but had a morning of open discussion followed by morning tea. On 14 May, we enjoyed a picnic in Robelle Domain parklands. Some of the members made salads and desserts and Trevor and Bob cooked the barbecue. It was a lovely morning which everyone enjoyed. May 21, members played Hoy followed by a lovely morning tea. We also took a collection for the Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea with the proceeds going to the Cancer Council Queensland. On 30 April we had our bus trip to Redcliffe. We stopped for morning tea in a park then picked up our local guide who explained a lot to us about places of interest and we also saw the Bee Gees Way which was opened in February last year by the famous Barry Gibb. We also saw the house they lived in while growing up in Redcliffe. It was then onto the RSL for lunch. On the way back to the bus, Rudy slipped on the escalator, bruising and cutting her legs. Thankfully, she is fine now. Our raffle day was on 28 May, followed by morning tea. If you’re interested in joining our club you can ring me on 3818 9343 Pat Quickfall.

GE staff help plant trees for the future
Pictured left to right: Elma Islamovic and Cr Sheila Ireland
A group of staff from across the GE company descended on Springfield recently for a special working bee. Ipswich City Council Division 9 Councillor Sheila Ireland said the 125 employees had visited The Cascades at Springfield Lakes and assisted council officers with tree planting in bio retention basins within the area. “This work will help to further improve the water quality of this area,” Cr Ireland said. “Council welcomes GE to our city and we look forward to working together on future environmental projects. The participating GE employees are all Brisbane based and work in different areas of the company such as health care, power and water and GE Capital.” Cr Ireland said the day was part of the company’s regular work it undertook in the community. “Each year the company’s employees take part together in an event and every GE employee also receives a paid day annually to allow them to undertake some sort of charitable works. Last year the staff donated 41,000 hours to the community. “This year for their group effort, the company chose to come to Ipswich because it is about to move its Queensland headquarters here. Construction is currently taking place on GE’s new headquarters near Robelle Domain which will become home to the company in 2015.” Cr Ireland said the company was currently based at Buranda, Mansfield and Northgate. GE is the eighthlargest company in the Fortune 500.

Assistance Dogs Australia’s newest puppy recruit Brandy, may look cute and cuddly, but in two years’ time she will change the life of someone with a physical disability. Pups like Brandy will open the door to a new independence for their future clients, but to do this they need your help. That’s why Assistance Dogs Australia is sniffing out puppy raisers and sitters in Brisbane to be “puppy parents” to the litter of seven puppies Labrador mum Dee Dee gave birth to recently. “Raising a puppy lets you give back to the community with the added bonus of the pitter-pattering of puppy paws,” said Assistance Dogs Australia’s Senior Trainer, Cherie Bekker. “Puppy raisers and sitters will teach these pups to undertake tasks that are difficult or even impossible for people with physical disabilities to achieve. They’ll teach them to pick up all sorts of objects such as mobile phones and keys and make sure they are able to alert bark when required. “You can also take the pups to the shops, cafes, on public transport and even to the cinema as it is all these experiences that will help them become an Assistance Dog.” The pups will be helped in their quest to be Assistance Dogs by experienced Senior Trainer Cherie who will be there with raisers and sitters every step of the way during training, providing them with instruction and support for the 14 months the puppies spend on their “L” plates before returning to the National Training Centre in Heathcote, Sydney for Advanced Training. “The best part of being a puppy raiser or sitter is helping to change someone’s life by training a fantastic Assistance Dog,” Brisbane Puppy Raiser Joanna Zietek said. “To see the impact that Brandy will make to someone with a physical disability one day is priceless.” Assistance Dogs Australia is a charity that trains Labradors and Golden Retrievers to give freedom and independence to people with physical disabilities. Assistance Dogs do everyday tasks for their recipients that people with physical disabilities find difficult, if not impossible, to achieve, like opening and closing doors, pressing the button at the traffic lights, retrieving dropped items and even getting the phone. Each dog takes two years to train and is worth an investment of $27,000 but are placed with recipients free of charge. For further information about how you can help please call Assistance Dogs Australia on 1800 688 364 or view their website at www.assistancedogs.org.au.

Then and now...
a look back at Greater Springfield
Springfield Councillor David Morrison reflects on the genesis of Greater Springfield and looks at the development of Education City. Cr David Morrison said, “I clearly remember standing on a dirt track which is now the four lane Sinnathamby Boulevard, with SLC Director Raynuha Sinnathamby and SLC Director of Education Services Mr Nev Smith looking at cleared dirt and trying to imagine what Education City would look like.” Today USQ, along with its 300 seat auditorium, is the heart of Education City which also includes TAFE, World Knowledge Centre, Student Accommodation, UIL, Dance Studio, On Campus Tavern, and the latest edition of Hot Yoga. USQ is currently duplicating its current footprint which is exciting for all ages who want to attend university.
