The first 200 spaces in the new permanent car park at Springfield Central station was opened last month. Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson said that development of this 400 space car park was on track for completion this month. “Springfield station opened with 200 park ‘n’ ride spaces and Springfield Central had 100 park ‘n’ ride spaces,” said Mr Emerson. “We partnered with Ipswich Council to invest in these additional 400 spaces at Springfield Central.” The new spaces will serve the Springfield sports precinct and connect to the station via a pedestrian bridge. Entry to the new car park is off Springfield Greenbank Arterial, with CCTV and lighting in the car park to be installed as part of the remaining completion works. Station staff continue to receive positive feedback about the station’s facilities and the 41 minute trip time from Springfield Central to Brisbane’s Central station. Patronage demand at Richlands has eased with more customers choosing to board at the new Springfield and Springfield Central stations. The Springfield line timetable delivers trains every six to 12 minutes in the morning peak and every 12 minutes in the afternoon peak. Work on the 5.5km road component of the $475 million integrated road and rail project is still underway and is expected to be completed in the coming months. “The community have embraced the Springfield and Springfield Central Stations with over 100 000 trips being registered since opening in early December,” said Cr David Morrison. “The original 100 car parks at Springfield Central Station have been full each Monday to Friday since the first day the rail opened to the public early December. “I congratulate and thank the State government for listening and working with Council to find a solution.”

As we head into autumn 2014, we will hopefully begin to enjoy some cooler weather, after, what has felt like to me, a very hot summer. I always enjoy it when there is that hint of change in the air. Come to think of it, I just like change generally! Which is why I am excited about some of the changes we have made recently, here at Local News Publications. You will notice that this edition of The Lake News is on full gloss paper, as opposed to the matte paper it was previously printed on. Our publications have seen a few different printing processes over the last 20 years and we are pleased to now move to gloss paper. Printing on full gloss paper gives a sharpness and cleaner look to advertisements, photos and text, as well as a depth of colour that can’t be achieved on the previous paper. We know it also improves the overall look of our publications, which is something we are constantly striving for and looking to improve. It’s a fine balance between ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ and wanting to give our readers and advertisers the very best we can offer. With that in mind, the other change we have made is the decision for our publications to be delivered to homes over a weekend, rather than mid week. As you would know, there are rather a lot of catalogues and other material that fight for space in your letterbox during the week. Changing to a weekend delivery, where fewer items are delivered, will increase the effectiveness of the delivery and give our publications greater prominence. Please keep in mind that whilst we have changed delivery companies, the same rules apply - houses with ‘no junk mail’ stickers will not be delivered to, as well as houses that have an obscured letterbox or houses on acreage blocks. If none of these apply to your house, and you or someone you know does not receive The Lake News, please do let us know. We pay for full coverage and are happy to pass on any non-delivery issues to the delivery company. To make our publications accessible to those who have ‘no junk mail’ stickers, or have moved from the area but still maintain an interest in the community, our online versions are able to be viewed from your desktop computer, your tablet or smartphone. We know that many of you do read The Lake News online, so I wanted to remind you that any email address or website is a direct link. This means you can simply and quickly access any of the advertisers or community groups with one click. You will be taken straight to their website where you can lodge an enquiry or else be taken to your email application where you can send off an email. Living in this technological age really is fun and exciting! It gives us all so many more ways to connect. As always, we value and appreciate your feedback and welcome any comments, either on the new look or the delivery. And in the meantime, enjoy the cooler days and nights by getting involved with a community group or simply utilise one of our many great parks and the Lake. We live in a fantastic area - let’s make the most of it!

ne of the most emotionally painful experiences we can have as humans is discrimination. Whether this is at work or at home discrimination hurts. Research shows that people who experience discrimination are likely to be depressed, less productive in the workplace, and often end up socially isolated. At a social level, discrimination appears in groups as prejudice. This type of discrimination results in groups of people adopting and sharing a belief system around a particular person, or around a group of people identified according to one characteristic, such as their faith, their age, or their gender. These beliefs result in all those targeted as being ‘tarred with the same brush’. The danger of this is that it results in ‘in-groups’ and ‘out-groups’. Out-groups can become identified as potential threats, and in situations such as the workplace, those individuals classified as part of the ‘out-group’ can suffer serious mental health problems, in some cases even leading to suicide. This is because one of the most basic needs we have as humans is acceptance into social groups. Research suggests that when we see members of groups that we don’t consider our own, a part of the brain called the amygdala lights up. The amygdala is part of the ‘emotional brain’ and activates our ‘fight-orflight’ response. It’s a hard-wired survival response that bypasses the frontal cortex, or the ‘thinking brain’, and sets off a cascade of physical responses such as racing heart, rapid breathing, and muscle tension, all designed to fire us up to fight the threat, or to escape. So how do we recover if we’ve been the victim of discrimination? One approach is to emotionally distance yourself from the direct experience, and consider possible reasons for the perpetrator acting this way. This is known as taking a self-distanced perspective in which you analyse the experience as if you yourself were a third-party observer, a kind of fly on the wall: ‘Why did that prejudiced comment get to him so much?’ Or another option is to consider it from your own perspective, such as ‘I wonder what it was about that particular comment that got under my skin?’ The more typical response is called a self-immersed perspective, in which we go over and over the experience, replaying it so that our emotions become increasingly stirred up. By taking a more emotionally distant view, we turn down the amygdala and turn up the frontal cortex and reduce the acute emotional responses. Another approach is to use basic mindfulness techniques. When threatened, we tend to narrow our focus of attention down to only the perpetrator, which is not helpful. So if you have been the victim of discrimination, give yourself a few minutes to broaden your focus of attention – listen to other sounds around you (not just the voice of the intimidator), pay attention to something interesting you can see, notice smells and other unrelated physical sensations, breathe deeply and consciously relax your whole body. This strategy reminds you that the discrimination is only one very small part of the piece of world you inhabit right now, and everything else around you is as it should be.

Creative Hub debut attracts great interest
Greater Springfield Creative Hub has made its first debut in a public domain. The call for craft, art and creatives attracted the attention of not only locals, but also garnered expressions of interest from the Greater Springfield region also. Held at the creativity friendly grounds of USQ Springfield Central Campus, the meeting highlighted the community support for the venture and a need for creative avenues and networking locally in Springfield. Artists and creatives joined Jolanta Szymczyk, the driver behind the vision, and the organisers to plan for the Creative Hub’s future. Cr Charles Pisasale, Chairperson of the Arts, Community and Cultural Services Committee and local Councillor, David Morrison encouraged the attendees on their creative journey by planting the seeds of creative avenues in the local community. A strong alignment with the latest research in the area of creativity, innovation and community’s health and wellbeing, highlighted by Janet McDonald, Associate Professor, USQ, underpinned the importance and role these elements play in the foundation of a community’s long term health benefits. A need for a dedicated space to learn, teach, network, exhibit and share the community’s creative pathways and passions were amongst the most cited comments during the meeting. If you missed the first meeting, are creative yourself or are part of an existing group, involved in creative industries as part of your business or personal interest or a hobby and would like to be part of this creative journey – lets us know about yourself and become involved in the formation of the Creative Springfield Hub. For updates and follow ups, check the Creative Hub’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/GSCreativeHub. All enquiries can be directed to Jolanta Szymczyk at studio88@optusnet.com.au, or phone 0405 336 240. ®

The official opening of new speciality facilities and the launch of Phase II has heralded a new chapter of growth for the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Springfield. USQ Chancellor Designate John Dornbusch officially opened the new Engineering Laboratory and the Fitness and Recreation Centre, and marked the next exciting stage of USQ Springfield which includes the construction of a $45 million state-of-the-art, student-orientated, Five-Star Green Building. Mr Dornbusch said the expansion strengthened its reputation and allowed USQ to grow, encourage and enrich student participation and the overall university experience. “A vision for the education precinct, which only a few years ago was a paper plan, is now very much a reality, and one in which USQ shares its campus as part of the Ipswich City Council and Springfield Land Corporation’s plans for a community of the twenty-first century,” Mr Dornbusch said. “Here at Springfield we witness the beginning of a new era of education – expanding capacity at USQ through a new stateof-the-art, Five-Star Green Building designed for innovative teaching and learning.” The 8000-square metre building, supported by the Australian Government, is expected to be completed in March 2015 and will include a central learning commons and hub, library services, collaborative learning spaces, specialist teaching spaces, individual and group study areas and staff accommodation. USQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Jan Thomas said the launch was a celebration of the University’s growth and its capacity to create a space purpose-built for the community it serves. It marked the opening of new learning, teaching and research spaces, expanded student resources as well as acknowledged the construction of a landmark building,” Professor Thomas said.

Soroptimist International, the world’s largest business and professional women’s service club with over 90,000 members in 124 countries, now has a club in Springfield. The club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month in the Community Room at Orion Shopping Centre at 7.00pm. Soroptimist International’s main goals are to improve the lives and status of women and girls through education, empowerment or enabling opportunities, and to be a global voice for women and girls to increasingly access education and leadership. Clubs work on both local and international projects. Club Extension convenor, Shelley Haley said, “Local projects and activities will be developed to address needs and issues in the Greater Springfield community that are identified by club members. The SI Region of South Queensland has a small team currently working with the fledgling club’s members and are ready to investigate possible projects here.” The organisation also has large-scale international projects – currently in PNG a four year project is ensuring the training of village birthing attendants, provision of essential equipment to them and the up-skilling of midwives via professional training to ensure they will have international accreditation. Such international projects are developed, conducted and supervised by Soroptimists through liaison with local government departments. Soroptimist International advocates to influence legislation and policies at all levels of government, and has consultative status at the UN via its Soroptimist UN Representatives. Clubs’ project work and advocacy around the world is recorded on a central database which enables SI to report accurately to the UN. Soroptimists can attend regular international and national conferences. A conference for the nine clubs in the Region of South Queensland is being held 29 – 30th March at the Ipswich International Metro Hotel and one of the new Springfield ladies will be in attendance. If you’d like to find out more, enjoy some social activities and make a difference in Springfield, come to one of the meetings or email ralda@creatorix.com or contact Shelley on 0419 546 013.

PHONE: 3271 2221 OR: 0427 115 979 Eighteen year old Mitchell Eickenloff, member of local scout group, Goodna Scouts has worked hard over the last three years to complete the criteria needed to be awarded the highest award for Venturer Scouts, the Queen’s Scout Award. The Queen’s Scout Award is highly regarded in the community at large and the Royal Certificate is presented to the Venturer Scout by a representative of the Queen, usually the Governor General of the State. The requirements are designed to be inspiring and challenging and to take entrants to a much higher and demanding level. Participants must set a goal, plan the progress towards the goal, be organised and determined to complete the task in the face of potential setbacks and difficulties. Among the goals of completing a Unit Management Course in one week, preparing a resume, geocaching, over 50 hours each of community work and service to Cub Scouts, Mitchell embarked on two expedition hikes, as well as an initiative hike. The first hike was at Glenreagh, New South Wales, where Mitchell hiked over 40 kms in three days carrying all his own gear. The second hike took place on the Sunshine Coast Hinterlands at Mapleton. Over four days, Mitchell hiked more than 70 kms in weather conditions that were less than favourable, making it a wet and slippery trek. The aim of scouting is to “encourage the physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual and character development of young people so that they take a constructive place in society as a member of their local, national and international community.” If you would like your child to be involved in scouting, contact Goodna Scout Group by phoning 0417 777 970, sending an email to rosella@goodnascouts.com or visiting their website: goodna.scoutsqld.com.au. Scout meetings take place at various times and days throughout the week at the Goodna Scout Den, 52-54 Church Street, Goodna.

Jacinta Ticehurst with her 4 medals won at MetWest trials.
St Augustine’s College students recently took part in the Central District Swimming Carnival and MetWest trials, boasting fantastic individual and group results. HPE teacher Mr Nick Barling said, “Along with some outstanding individual results across both events, what stood out most was the school spirit that was on display every time a StAC student was in the pool.” At the Central District Swimming Carnival, twenty-three students formed one of the largest contingents of swimmers, achieved 3rd place overall, and progressed 14 students to the Met West trials. Individually, students Gemma Casaceli (9 years), Jacinta Ticehurst (11 years) and Hadley Mayo (12 years) won Age Champions in their respective age group. Both Jacinta and Hadley competed in MetWest trials with fantastic efforts. Out of the ten events Jacinta competed on, she received a silver medal for 200m freestyle and bronze for 200m individual medley, 100m breaststroke and 100m butterfly. Hadley Mayo won a silver medal for his swim in 200m freestyle.

Camira Friends and Neighbours update
by Pat Quickfall
Our guest speaker for the month of February which was on February 5th was Helen Rattenbury, who talked about how to recycle plastic bottles and also how to care for our plants and fertilise the garden. She also brought some plants with her which we could purchase. It was a very interesting morning and now we know what to do - don’t throw anything away which you can recycle. On February 12th members had an enjoyable morning with a lovely morning tea. February 19th was Show and Tell, which proved to be another interesting morning. Gail Monroe talked about collecting tabs of aluminiun cans for the Ronald McDonald House which many of her friends also collect for her. Every kilo of tabs is worth one dollar and with approximately 3000 tabs to a Kilo thats a lot of tabs to collect! Over the years, $1M has been raised for this great cause. February 26th was our bus trip to the Brisbane Airport which was another good day. We left Camira about 8am and stopped at Mt Cootha for morning tea then back on the bus to the airport. We met up with a young lady Jacinta who showed around the airport which was very interesting. Our next stop was the Transit Centre for lunch which was very nice, then we were back on the bus again before being dropped off at Bretts Wharf where we hopped on the City Cat for a ride down the Brisbane. We alighted at Toowong, from where we then made our way home. I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. Our sound system is coming along nicely and should be up and running soon. We have also had a few new members join us welcome and we hope you enjoy the wonderful friendly club. Anyone interested can call Pat on 3818 9343.
New Bunnings store at Springfield central Springfield based Councillor David Morrison said Council’s approval of Bunnings at Springfield Central means the hardware shopper will be the winner. To have two major hardware stores as neighbours means they will both be aggressively competing for the same customers which hopefully results in lower prices and great customer service. With Masters having 12 000m2 undercover and the proposed Bunnings approved for 16 000m2, resulting in 28 000m2 of retail hardware. Cr David Morrison said that 2014 will be another exciting and historical year for the Greater Springfield Area. Bunnings new Springfield Central Store has approval to include retail warehouse, timber and trade supplies, garden centre, on-site café and a charitable fundraising and community service BBQ area.

A message from the Mayor’s Desk BY THE MAYOR - PAUL PISASALE There are plenty of exciting events in Ipswich throughout the year that always attract visitors near and far, including the Ipswich Cup, Winternationals drag racing, the Ipswich 360 and our annual Ipswich Show. Another exciting event just around the corner is the Ipswich Festival which celebrates everything that is great about our diverse city including the people, the arts, tourism, and the cultures. This year the Ipswich Festival will be held from April 24 to May 11 and there are plenty of opportunities for residents to get involved in the array of free entertainment, events and activities. From the Festival Street Party, Jazz Wine and Blues, Kids Kingdom, Global Fiesta and more, there is so much to love about Festival time in Ipswich. There are plenty of ways to get involved including joining in the Festival Street Parade with your local school or community group. The parade is a great opportunity for different groups, businesses and organisations to put together a float and get involved with the broader Ipswich community. Visit www.ipswichfestival.com.au to find out what’s on and how to get involved. The Greater Springfield Times -March 2014 - Page 15

Vaccinate your pets and save their lives Dogs and cats need to be vaccinated because of the highly contagious viruses that are present in the environment. If a pet has not had its immune system stimulated by way of vaccination program, their immune system will be incapable of fighting the virus, leading to the pet becoming severely sick with an incurable disease and dying. Puppies and kittens are most susceptible but don’t forget your older pets. As a pet ages, many of their organs, especially kidneys and liver, become weaker and so does their immune system. This makes them more susceptible to viruses that could make them ill and shorten their life span. Maintaining preventative health care throughout the whole of your pet’s life is very important so you and your pet can spend a long time together. The common signs of many illnesses are lethargy, vomiting, diarrhoea and weight loss; unfortunately these are also the signs of the infectious Parvovirus (in dogs) and Feline Enteritis (in cats). The common viruses that affect dogs are Canine Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus and Infectious Tracheobronchitis (Canine cough). Feline Enteritis and “Cat Flu complex” commonly affect the cat population. Another virus, FIV (Feline Aids) is prevalent in cats that spend any time outside as it is spread by cat bites. Vaccines are available for all the above diseases. These often-fatal viruses are making a re-emergence due to the decline in the number of pets receiving vaccination. Your pet can contract any of these viruses by ingesting the virus, mixing with other pets that are not vaccinated, having contact with an infected pet even if it is not showing any symptoms at the time but is incubating the virus, having contact with other pet’s droppings, walking in the park or along the footpath, or you can bring viruses into your own yard on the soles of your shoes. The vaccination program for both puppies and kittens should consist of three injections, the first being at six to eight weeks of age. They have a second injection at 10-12 weeks of age and then a final injection at 14-16 weeks of age. Their immunity should then be stimulated every 12 months for life with yearly vaccinations. At the visit to your vet for your pet’s vaccination, your pet will be given a thorough physical examination to check ears, eyes, teeth, heart, lung sounds and etc. The vet will ask about any problems that your pet may have had since the last visit and advise you on intestinal worming, heartworm prevention, flea control, best diet for your pet and future vaccinations. Arrange an appointment at your local vet before it’s too late!

Councillor’s Comments by Cr Sheila Ireland (Division 9) 3810 6231 or Div9Office@ipswich.qld.gov.au There is such a lot happening right across Ipswich at the moment. The recent launch of the Civic Centre programme presents, among other things, an opportunity for local artists and aspiring singers or dancers to work alongside professionals in the forthcoming State Company productions by Opera Queensland and Expressions Dance Company. Further information on these opportunities can be found on Opera Queensland’s website www.operaq.com.au/ projectpuccini or by contacting the Civic Centre on 3810 7751. Well done to the new Civic Centre and Performing Arts Manager. Look for your copy of the program ‘The Best Seats in the House.’ There are also several exciting developments around Springfield Lakes. Opposite Spring Lake, the recent approval of a multi-unit project means more growth for the area alongside the new development on the corner of Springfield Lakes Boulevard and Lakeside Avenue. Local parents/carers need to be aware of the parking conditions around schools especially the two minute drop off zones. If your child is not there when you pull up, you may need to drive around and come back a few minutes later. Parking conditions are enforced for the safety of your children. Invitations have been sent to Seniors groups to nominate a representative on the Senior’s Consultative Committee. This band of hard workers organises the Seniors Week activities among other things. Remember, I am always available to visit your groups at your convenience and my next Community Meeting will be held at the Community Room at Orion Shopping Centre on Tuesday 1st April, at 6.30pm. Probus Club Update by Pat van der Beek As I write this column, we have just been through a brief but vicious heatwave. Rain is apparently on the way but so far we have received only a brief sprinkle. Again, water tanks are nearing empty and lawns are crying out for moisture...and that’s just in suburbia, out west they are doing it much tougher though useful falls have been received in some areas. Let’s hope that, by the time this goes to print, some welcome rain will have been received all over the state. The meetings of the Goodna/Springfield Probus Club are held on the first Wednesday of each month and this month’s meeting was our AGM. We welcome the new committee as we begin another year of Probus fun and friendship and look forward to the many informative guest speakers and interesting outings that are already lined up for this year. The picture above shows a few of us enjoying lunch at Southbank after visiting the ‘Treasures of Afghanistan’ exhibition. There was no Guest Speaker for March because of the AGM but future speakers will include: Dr James Lergessner to speak on ‘Baby Boomers growing up in Brisbane’, Vic Wise on ’Eight Days to Singapore’ and the ‘Giving with Love’ group for whom our club holds a towel drive each year. March’s activity was a visit to the Queensland Institute of Medical Research at the Royal Brisbane Hospital. This outing provided us with a rare opportunity to witness first-hand some of the latest research undertaken in many areas of medicine in Queensland. We hired a bus for the day and travelled to Broncos Leagues Club for an enjoyable lunch after our visit. All members are welcome at all activities and potential members are encouraged to contact Vic on the number below for details. Finally don’t forget our drop-in coffee mornings at Robelle Domain, Springfield Parklands, on the third Friday of each month. (This month’s date is 21 March). We would like to issue a cordial invitation to all retired and semi-retired local people to consider joining our friendly club. There is no charge for your first meeting and you are under no obligation to join. Your first step is to ring Vic on 3271 1096 or join us at 1.30pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Camira Friends and Neighbours Clubhouse in Bruce Lane (cnr Langley Road), Camira.

Trades & Services Animal foster carers needed RSPCA Qld is looking for enthusiastic and compassionate people who can provide a safe and loving temporary home for an animal that needs time away from the shelter environment. The team of foster carers at RSPCA Qld dedicate their time to nurturing and loving those animals who need it most. This includes young puppies and kittens too young to be adopted, animals recovering from injuries or illness, dogs or cats that are not coping well in a shelter environment, and animals that are victims of abuse, neglect or abandonment and are awaiting court case outcomes. RSPCA Qld’s State Foster Care Coordinator, Julie Herbert, said one of the most rewarding experiences for foster carers is seeing a previously uncared-for animal enjoying life and learning to trust once again. “For many foster carers, the experience of fostering an abused or neglected animal is tremendously rewarding,” she said. “These animals are in desperate need of human contact and to the special few fostering these animals, the experience can change their lives.” This was the case for foster carers Nicky and Scott, who provided a loving home for gentle giant Bruce, a four-yearold Mastiff-cross, while he waited for adoption. Found as a stray, Bruce was a long-term RSPCA guest – chalking up more than 500 days – most of which were spent at their home, in between popping into the Brisbane Animal Long-term guest of RSPCA Qld, Bruce the four-year-old Care Campus occasionally to try to find a new forever home. Mastiff-cross, was adopted at Christmas by his foster Bruce did not have to look far to find his second chance carers who could not bear to part with him. after all. Just before Christmas his foster carers decided to adopt him. “We finally caved in when we realised that if someone else took him now, we wouldn’t be able to say goodbye,” Nicky said.Nicky and Scott said Bruce was learning to be a foster brother for all the little kittens that the family continues to foster for RSPCA Qld.RSPCA Qld has a range of different animals that need the love and assistance of foster carers. Some animals only need a week or two in foster while others require long-term care. Carers can specify the duration of care they are able to provide. RSPCA Qld provides all food, equipment, veterinary care and training for foster carers. Currently, RSPCA Qld is in greatest need of foster carers who can take large breed dogs and adult cats. Bruce was Nicky and Scott’s first large breed dog. “I have never owned a big dog in my life. The biggest dog we have ever had was a Springer Spaniel, so Bruce was a huge change. And I would happily get a giant breed again. They are gentle (especially with little kids) and so goofy, and everyone wants to meet them when you go for a walk. So he has helped us meet all of our neighbours, and he is great company when I am home alone,” Nicky said. For more information on becoming a foster carer visit www.rscpaqld.org.au or contact RSPCA Qld’s foster care team on 3426 9997 or fostering@rspcaqld.org.au.
