Film festival to showcase local talent Young scriptwriters and directors will once again have an opportunity to show their creative flair at this years popular Ipswich Film Festival for Youth (IFFY).

The festival has gone from strength to strength and is a wonderful opportunity to showcase emerging talent, enjoying a keen following among local youth interested in film and TV. The decision to move the event to the latter part of the year proved successful as it allows for more involvement from local schools.

The University of Southern Queensland and its Film and TV Faculty, has been critical to the success of IFFY and will once again support the event.

The theme for this years participants is ‘Time’ with entries open now until September 14. It is free to enter the festival.

Judging will take place in late September and early October with a major screening night and red carpet event to be held on for November 9.

Participants can enter in the following categories: primary school age, secondary school age or open for 17 to 25 year olds. There is also a category for schools. A series of awards will be given out in each category.

A

s I prepare to study for the first time in a gazillion years, the idea is both exhilarating and daunting. On one hand, I love to learn. I will read just about anything and I’m always keen to hear about things I know little about. I love discussing things with people who have different interests and thoroughly enjoy being shown or told about something new that I’ve not come across previously.

But (and it’s a big but!) I also hate learning. I want to just know things without having to go through the process of learning them. In any creative pursuits I become easily frustrated when what’s in my head is vastly different than what is being produced by my hands. I want to perfect an art on the first go and no amount of ‘practice makes perfect’ and other trite sayings help.

I have a friend who absolutely loves the process of learning. She loves watching her own progression in a given area, whether it’s her career or her many artistic talents. She doesn’t expect herself to automatically know how to do something, like I do. She is happy to give herself over to gradual development and not look for instant success.

In life, and particularly in relationships with others, we rarely ‘get things right’ on the first go. As we learn more about a person, we know better how to give them what they need from us. As we understand our spouse, often through trial and error, we become more skilled at preempting their needs, and in turn, being able to fill them.

We need to learn the difference in each of our children in order to give them what they need to feel loved, accepted and fulfilled. How often have we all seen parents who parent each child exactly the same in an attempt at fairness? In reality, what often ends up happening is that only one child’s needs are sufficiently filled, and we run the risk of the other children not growing up with a feeling of acceptance and being understood. When we really know our children, we can make decisions based on that knowledge and tailor our parenting of each child accordingly.

I think one of the greatest mistakes we can make in our relationship with our spouse or partner is not taking enough time to really learn what we need to about one another. We can be like me - happy to learn in some instances, but wanting instant knowledge in others.

Unfortunately, we often take the lazy route and fail to learn about our partner, which over time can lead to disengagement and unhappiness for both parties.

So I’m going to try and take a leaf out of my friend’s book and really make the most of the learning process instead of bucking against it, not just with my studies but with my relationships and other aspects of my life too. It’s all about paying attention, giving it another go when we get it wrong and keep learning!

Go Blue in April for autism awareness April is Autism Awareness Month and Autism Queensland has launched its annual Go Blue for Autism campaign to raise funds and awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a lifelong developmental disability that affects one in 100 Australians.

Registrations are now open at www. goblueforautism.com.au for individuals, families, schools, workplaces and community groups across Queensland to take part in the Queensland-wide event by dressing in blue or hosting Go Blue events on their chosen day in April.

The Go Blue for Autism website also includes news and events from around Queensland as well as promotional materials for download, with social media driving much of the campaign each year.

Internationally, World Autism Awareness Day is observed on 02 April every year and marks the start of Autism Awareness Month in Australia and Go Blue for of Autism in Queensland.

Autism Queensland’s CEO Rod Cameron said 110 Go Blue events were held across metropolitan and regional Queensland in 2015. “Go Blue for Autism is now in its fifth year and 2016 is already off to a flying start with more than a dozen Go Blue events registered since the start of February,� he said. “Anyone can Go Blue, either individually or as a group and their fundraising activities can be as simple as collecting a gold coin donation per person for dressing in blue or by selling Go Blue merchandise which we have available for purchase or by consignment. “You can also organise a Go Blue fundraiser at your school, workplace, sports club or community group and donate the proceeds to Autism Queensland,� Mr Cameron said.

Autism prevalence in Australia is on the rise with the condition now more common than cerebral palsy, diabetes, deafness, blindness and leukaemia put together.

In Queensland, there are over 10,000 school aged children living with Autism.

Autism Queensland run Queensland’s only autism-specific schools at Brighton and Sunnybank and delivers services from its centres, as well as Early Intervention Centres and outreach services which visit all schools in Queensland as well as providing support in the home.

Atopy - canine airborn allergy Atopy is a common skin disease causing itchiness in the dog. It is a reaction by an individual animalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s body to airborne pollens from grasses, weeds, trees, mould spores and house dust. Most dogs develop atopy as young adults as early as six months of age. The most common clinical sign is itching, usually involving the muzzle, around the eyes, ear flaps, armpits, groin and paws. Some dogs may have recurrent ear infections. As a result of chewing, licking, rubbing and scratching, the skin becomes inflamed and is prone to secondary infections with bacteria and yeast.

In dogs with chronic disease, there is hair loss and the skin often becomes thickened, scaly and black. The haircoat may feel greasy and be associated with an offensive odour.

There are several ways that atopy can be managed in order to keep your dog comfortable.

Diagnosis and avoidance Sensitivity tests determine what your pet may be allergic to but avoidance of grass, weeds, pollen and house dust is virtually impossible. These substances are airborne and in the case of pollens, may travel considerable distances. In some instances, dogs with house dust allergy may benefit from being kept outdoors.

Hyposensitisation This involves desensitizing your pet to things that it is allergic to through a course of injections with purified extracts we call allergy vaccines.

Medical Therapy While your dog is receiving an allergy vaccine, or alternatively, if you have elected not to pursue hypersensitization, medical therapy is required to control the itching. The most useful agents to control allergy are cortisone-based drugs.

Unfortunately, these can be associated with undesirable side effects. An alternate drug is cyclosporin. Other medical options include antihistamines and fatty acid supplementation that can help relieve itching but rarely control the signs completely.

Topical Therapy Frequent shampooing with specific shampoos will help remove pollen from the coat, surface debris and bacteria and help soothe the skin. Topical cortisone lotion or ointment can be used if only localised areas like the paws, ears or around the eyes are affected.

Flea Control It is important to use a thorough flea control in your atopic pet, even if your pet is not allergic to flea bites. The presence of fleas may aggravate his/her underlying allergy.

Generally atopy is an ongoing issue that will not be fixed overnight. Often these cases are monitored frequently and treatment is constantly adjusted.

Scholarship win sets Monica on path to tertiary success Augustine Heights resident, Monica Schultz, has received a major boost to her tertiary studies, receiving a Sir Samuel Griffith scholarship from Griffith University. The scholarship is valued at $24,000 and runs for four years.

Monica graduated from St Augustine’s College at Augustine Heights last year, earning an OP 2. She has been accepted to study secondary teaching at Griffith University and hopes to become a maths and history teacher.

The Sir Samuel Griffith scholarship is awarded to school leavers who achieve outstanding academic records and show high levels of leadership and community involvement. While completing her senior studies, Monica was a leader of the St Augustine’s College Stewardship Committee and spent time with residents at Seasons Aged Care at Redbank through the College’s Social Outreach program.

The scholarship also provides recipients with entry St Augustine’s teacher, Mrs Lesley Critchley with Monica. to the Griffith Honours College, designed specifically for high achieving students. The Honours College provides enriching experiences to help students develop skills in leadership, teamwork, community engagement and intellectual engagement.

Monica says one teacher in particular played a key role in helping her achieve outstanding results.

“I really wouldn’t have been able to do all this if it wasn’t for the excellent teaching and support of maths and chemistry teacher, Mrs Lesley Critchley,” Monica said.

“It made a huge difference to my education to have a teacher who was invested in my learning and was willing to put the extra hours into tutoring at Homework Help.

“St Augustine’s provided free tutoring sessions after school in maths and chemistry, and this extra help made all the difference to my end results,” Monica said.

The College is currently finalising plans for a new Secondary Campus Resource Centre that will be constructed during 2017, ready for the 2018 school year. The Resource Centre will incorporate the more traditional elements of a Library, a range of flexible learning spaces, all with a strong technology focus.

On the surface, the design of such a Centre would seem relatively straight-forward, however, in reality it is quite a challenge.

Catering for the differing learning style preferences of students necessitates changes to the construct of facilities from past generations as well as changes to the manner in which teachers approach their roles.

Greater emphasis now needs to be placed on flexible learning spaces that facilitate collaboration. The days of the Library being the ‘quiet’ place are being replaced with Resource Centres that encourage discussion, on-line research, and visual representation.

In 2014, I was fortunate enough to attend an international school design conference in Portland,

Oregon. One of the sessions I attended was entitled ‘Why call it a library?’ Besides providing a fascinating journey through the evolution of libraries over the past century, the session challenged those present to consider what a modern day Library should cater for and look like. In surveying students, the researchers found their number one prerequisite was not any of the obvious. Food topped their list of priorities, followed by casual meeting places, collaborative spaces and access to the internet via a range of technologies.

Access to hard copy and more traditional classroom spaces took on a much lower profile.

In itself, catering for the rapid change in technologies that should be made available to students is a challenge. In part, the design of the Resource Centre is trying to second guess what collaborative, connected learning may look like into the future.

The planning also includes three new classrooms designed in such a manner to be converted into a complementary second wing of the Resource Centre to cater future growth in enrolments.

Grant boosts local community group The creative efforts of participants in a Work for the Dole program will be showcased after Ipswich City Council agreed to support an upcoming music and multimedia exhibition at Robelle Domain at Springfield Central.

The exhibition, to be held in June, is one of three community initiatives to be supported through councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Community Development Grants program. Council will provide $2,191.66 to assist with the exhibition.

Promoting inclusion and belonging in the community, the Creative Collective Cultural Community (CCCC) is a not for profit organisation that encourages enterprise initiatives for the long term unemployed.

The organisation has been running a program in Ipswich City called Beat of the Drum and Digital Integration in which some participants make a steel drum and play it while others document their journey using multimedia.

This funding will help participants showcase their work to the community.

THE CREATIVE heART Creative HeART celebrates second birthday The last two years passed as quickly as a blink of an eye. In the meantime, our community and services all around us have also been changing. New shops and services are popping up while the group has taken up a number of challenging, developmental and business start-up opportunities to name a few. Most importantly, everyone feels supported in what they do and encouraged to grow.

“I have really enjoyed being a part of this amazing group right from the start. It has given me the opportunity to meet some truly inspiring people and I have made some fabulous friends within my local community. There have also been some opportunities come along that I perhaps would never have known about. My art practice is blossoming and both my daughter and I always enjoy our monthly meetings. I am thrilled that Redbank Plains Recreation Reserve will now form part of Division 9. New sporting fields are being constructed at the Redbank Plains Recreation Reserve and new fitness equipment has been recently installed. There will be a new Redbank Plains Community Centre at School Road opening by late 2016.

Determinations on the final plan for the new Springfield Central Library will be taking place over the next few months. Council is working toward a proposed 2019 opening at Orion Shopping Centre.

A Junior Mountain Bike circuit has been constructed at Streeton Park off Inglis Drive and is now open.

Halletts Road Bridge will be upgraded to two lanes and is planned for next financial year. And two new sets of traffic lights will be installed at the intersection of Alawoona Street and School Road for next financial year and at the intersection of Cedar Road and Redbank Plains Road which will be operating by the end of this month.

Also, construction of the four lane road on Redbank Plains Road is to be extended to the School Road intersection.

Two newly constructed playing fields behind Springfield Central State School and Springfield Central High School will open by the end of this year and will provide an option for school parking.

New Safe City Security cameras have been approved for Health Care Drive. And I am continuing to lobby for the rail extension and for the transport hub to be located at the southern end of School Road and Keidges Road.

Platypus program to expand local focus Ipswich City Council will expand the focus of a unique program which aims to pin-point and monitor the city’s platypus population.

T h e P l a t y p u s Wa t c h p r o j e c t has helped council improve its understanding of the Ipswich platypus population after signing up to the project in 2014 in partnership with Wildlife Preservation Society Queensland.

Previously, there was little or no firm data beyond a number of anecdotal and community sightings.

Through a series of workshops and community surveys council have been able to learn more about this iconic Australian animal in Ipswich.

Four workshops explaining survey techniques, preferred habitats, threats and behaviours of the platypus have been held as well as four community survey days which were well attended with 52 community members taking part.

Platypus sightings were recorded at Kholo Gardens and Saplings Pocket at Pine Mountain with evidence of previous platypus activity at Kholo Bridge over the Brisbane River.

This year council plans to add new sites to the project with likely locations to include Bundamba Creek, Deebing Creek and Woogaroo Creek.

The next community survey event will be a part of Connect to Your Creek Week activities which run from April 9 to 17.

Welcome to the March update from the National Seniors Goodna Redbank Branch. Last month the branch welcomed members to its first meeting of 2016. It was great for everyone to get together after the summer break and there was lots to talk about. Guest speaker for the meeting, Brenden Minehan from Nerada tea, gave a very interesting presentation with lots of questions from members. This was followed by a sausage sizzle.

This month, branch members will join up with Ipswich National Seniors on the first bus outing for the year, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s off to Nimbin to visit the shops and mix with the locals and enjoy a picnic lunch. peaker for our March meeting is Councillor Tully.

Members of the club are always interested in the happenings of their local council and this is their chance to ask questions.

Club members meet socially on the first Wednesday of each month for coffee and cake and a chat. On 6 April they will meet at the Brookwater Coffee Club at 9.30am.

We have invited a guest speaker from Cardiovasciular Health to talk to members about good health and its positive effect on cardiaovascular health for our meeting on 19 April.

The Goodna Redbank National Seniors branch meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the Goodna Leagues Club, Brisbane Terrace, Goodna at 10.00am. We charge a small fee for morning tea. Visitors are most welcome. For further information please contact Val Randle, Branch secretary on 3297 5735.

On the first Wednesday of the month, Jacki from Coronis Real Estate came along with two of her colleagues to talk about all things property related.

On Wednesday 10th Feb we had a good morning playing a new game called â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Word Meaningâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. The highlight of the morning was Joe 0â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Dowd who entertained us to demonstrate the meaning of the word with some disrobing involved! The hall was full of laughter and the morning was enjoyed by all.

Our bus trip to Walk about Creek was on 17 February and was very interesting. Then it was on to Ferny Grove to the bowls club for lunch. After lunch we went to the Tram Museum where we rode on four different trams, one that was over 100 years old. It was an enjoyable day out.

On 24th February we played Hoy with prizes to be won followed with a lovely morning tea. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to join our friendly group, call me, Pat, on 3818 9343.

Save a Life – Adopt a Greyhound!

Anyone who has encountered a greyhound will know that they are gentle and affectionate dogs who want nothing more than a soft bed and a loving home.

Tragically, the vast majority of racing greyhounds will never experience that loving home. The current inquiry into live baiting revealed that the Australian greyhound racing industry is responsible for the deaths of as many as 17,000 young dogs a year.

If you have ever thought about offering a much needed home to one of these dogs, here are some insights into what to expect.

Greyhounds don’t need a lot of exercise. Greyhounds are built for speed, not endurance, so a short daily walk and some play time is usually enough to keep them happy and healthy.

Greyhounds don’t need loads of space to live in. Greyhounds are very space-efficient and they’ve even been voted as one of the best breeds for apartment living. As long as their sharp minds are kept active with lots of play time and interaction and they are walked regularly, a greyhound can make a perfect inner-city companion.

Greyhounds are indoor dogs. With hardly any body fat and a very fine coat, greyhounds are particularly susceptible to both hot and cold weather. Access to a warm, dry and safe area is vital at all times, and extreme measures (AKA greyhound pyjamas) may be required on especially cool days.

Greyhounds are cuddly. After a life confined in a small kennel, many rescued greys will relish the opportunity to be at your side or on your lap or couch or bed! They may be 90% legs but that doesn’t mean they don’t snuggle up as well as the next dog!

Greyhounds love to nap (and play!). Greyhounds are affectionately considered to be the laziest breed, however just like any dog, they love to play! A grey will bow and vocalise to let their human or animal friends know when they’re ready to have some fun. This usually ends with what are known as ‘zoomies’ - running around in circles and bowing - a hilarious and infectious display of joy that may only last 10 minutes before it’s time to nap again.

There are many greyhound rescue organisations working very hard to re-home greyhounds. If you’d like the company of a greyhound but are not ready to commit to a dog for its full life, please consider becoming a foster carer. Not only will you play a vital role in preparing a greyhound for its life as a family member, you’ll also be freeing up a space so that another dog can be rescued.

Your local Club of Lions is a wonderful avenue of not only making new and wonderful friends but giving you the opportunity to help your local community. I feel very privileged to be part of a fantastic world wide community organisation.

March is a very busy month for us: March 5 - BBQ at Bunnings at Springfield Lakes. Come and meet us and enjoy a sausage or two.

March 12 - Cheesecake stall at the Harmony Festival at Robelle Domain.

All cheesecakes have been homemade.

March 20 - BBQ at the Maters Little Miracle Fun Run at Robelle Domain.

March 23 - High tea at Moselle’s Cafe on the Lake, starting at 10am. The cost is only $25 for a great morning out. There will be heaps of raffles and a second-hand book stall for a gold coin donation.

Prepaid tickets only. You can buy tickets at Moselle’s or ring me on 0409 429 368. Limited numbers only so get in fast. We have a wonderful morning planned and then why not stay on for lunch. What a great way to spend a day.

We run meat raffles every Friday night at the Spring Lake Hotel as a fundraising project, so if you are there please support our raffles.

We are all madly knitting beanies and scarves for our Knitting for the Homeless project. There’s plenty to do in coming months and the free guide gives you the first look at this year’s Ipswich Festival celebrations. From dazzling cabaret, Fire on the River, street parties and Global Fiesta, there’s events and activities for all ages. ‘Ipswich in Autumn’ also outlines local ANZAC Day services and orientation tours for new residents. Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way of protecting your child against harmful diseases.

Free immunisation clinics will be held on 17 March at the YMCA Springfield Lakes Community Centre, 63 Springfield Lakes Boulevard, and 22 March at Goodna Community Health, 81 Queen Street, from 9am-11am. There’s no need to make an appointment, simply come along on the day and bring your Medicare card, your child’s immunisation record book and the Comparisons of Diseases and Effects form. A carer can bring the child to the clinic but all forms must be completed and signed by the child’s parent or guardian. All vaccines are provided free as part of the National Immunisation Program.

The strategic and sustainable planning of the nearby suburb of Spring Mountain includes the proposed development of a new state primary school, neighbourhood shopping centre, sports facilities and 12 recreation parks. Spring Mountain is located between land designated for Springfield Town Centre and the council-owned White Rock-Spring Mountain Conservation Estate. The plan will be delivered in stages with work expected to start this year and continue beyond 2026. It’s great news for the families and young people who continue to move to the region to take advantage of affordable housing, modern infrastructure and local employment opportunities.

Our last meeting in February was a fun night with a few games being enjoyed by all those present. We also had a brief talk from Rob Spencer, the zone chairman, outlining his plans for the coming year. A lot of interesting stuff coming our way later in the year.

A small group had a coffee and chat catch up at Churro’s cafe in Orion Shopping centre recently. A great afternoon was had by all. I can recommend the Death by Chocolate cake, it’s to die for.

Our next meeting is on 16th March at Springfield Tavern. It is our 1st Birthday celebration and Cam Smith will be providing some light entertainment for an hour or so. Buy your own meal and drinks. Tea, coffee and birthday cake supplied.

We have a varied cross-section of members, some still working, some retired and some volunteering for the various organisations in the Springfield area.

a look back at Greater Springfield with Cr David Morrison

The last ten years - Greater Springfield 2006 – 2016 I found this old photo taken in 2006 and when I started writing on the photo, which is now yellow with age, I thought, it is no wonder the last ten years seem to have flown faster than any other decade of my life.

Sinnathamby Boulevard is still a dirt track, USQ is almost complete and Orion has commenced. You can see some of the major milestones including, USQ, Spring Lake Metro, The Springfield Anglican College, Hymba Yumba, rail and two stations, Robelle Domain, Orion Lagoon, Orion Springfield Central, Masters, Bunnings, Springfield Tower, Polaris Data Centre, Centenary Highway is now four lanes, St Peter’s Lutheran College, Springfield Central High and Primary that have happened in the last 10 years.

Billions of dollars have been invested into the Greater Springfield area by private investors and all levels of government and billions of dollars are in the pipeline for future investment. All the milestones listed have attracted thousands of jobs. The vision of Greater Springfield being an area where you can live, work and play is a reality for many thousands of locals. This is no accident and is the result of careful and strategic planning.

We certainly live in an exciting part of our planet.

It is always a challenge to ensure our precious environment is being preserved amidst all the development.

Hundreds of hectares of land have been dedicated as an Environmental Reserve, while hundreds of additional hectares are dedicated to open space. In total, almost 1000ha of the Greater Springfield Development is dedicated to either environmental reserve or public open space.

The healthy balance that is being achieved between the environment and development is one of the major reasons that the Greater Springfield Development has won State, National and International Awards.

The milestones marked in red on the photo are approved and I say watch this space in the next five years.

It has been my absolute honour to be Councillor of Division One for the last sixteen years and if re-elected I assure you I still have the passion to keep serving, representing and leading this amazing community.

Belated wishes for a happy and healthy 2016. Our club has welcomed a number of new members already this year and 2016 promises to be another year of fun and fellowship for retired people in our local area.

Our picture this month shows some of our friendly club members at our wine and cheese event at the end of 2015.

There will be no Guest Speaker for March as we will hold our AGM. Aprils’ guest speaker will be Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale.

Monthly coffee date for April is 10am Friday 15 April at Brookwater Coffee Club.

Monthly lunch dates for March and April are: noon on Thursday 17 March at Springfield Tavern (opposite Coles at Springfield Fair) and noon Friday 22 April at the Blue Fin Fishing Club, Inala.

In February, we decided on a breezy trip on the river for our monthly excursion. We caught the ferry at Southbank for the two-hour loop trip to Hamilton Reach after travelling by train to the city. Lunch at Southbank completed a pleasant and relatively cool day out. On Monday 20 March, we will return to Southbank for the Medieval Power exhibition at the Queensland Museum.

After seven years as the columnist for our club, I am relinquishing the role at this month’s AGM. I have enjoyed bringing news of our activities to you all and wish our new columnist (who will be elected this month) all the best in their new role. Watch out for our column in future editions of the Greater Springfield Times.
