For this years event, organisers are thrilled to have secured a one hour guest performance by the highly acclaimed Watoto Children’s Choir who are sure to draw a great crowd. As well as the Choir performance, local residents can look forward to numerous on stage entertainment, music and dance displays. With free rides and activities for both adults and children, families can enjoy markets and displays, food stalls, all in the great facility of Robelle Domain. Bronze reward at National competition Lachlan Cramond and Tobias Smith from the Centenary Rowing Club both won Bronze Medals at Sydney but sadly had to crew with other rowing clubs. Lachlan Cramond won two Bronze Medals gaining the best club result, his first in the U17 Quad Scull and the second in the U17 Double Scull. The Centenary squad fielded one of the smallest teams the Club has ever sent to the Nationals, but a difficult training programme resulting from the January floods may well have caused this. Centenary Rowing Club member, Lachlan Cramond Cramond who is in Grade 11 at Centenary State High School was lucky brings home two Bronze medals. to compete at the Nationals this year as he had not been regarded as good enough to gain a place in the Centenary Team but was instead part of the Coomera Anglican College team. Australian Coach Alan Bromiley very quickly picked up Cramond as he was looking for an extra oarsman for his Under 17 Quad Four from Coomera Anglican College. Mr Bromiley said yesterday that he only uses two criteria to select his crews – sculling trials and a stop watch. “For me this has proved to gain the best results at National competition for in the last 15 National competitions I have had rowers compete I have always returned with either Gold, Silver or Bronze. In regards to Lachlan Cramond he has to be one of the fittest and strongest young men I have ever come across in my coaching career and though not tall is ideal as either a bow or stroke oarsman in a light crew. I hope very much that he will be able to fit into any future crew that I am coaching as he is in my opinion a fantastic find for Queensland rowing,” Mr Bromiley said. Cramond said that he would love to be coached by Mr Bromiley again. “Whatever we did was always as a crew - we ate together, we trained together, discussed the result of each training row together and had team meetings every night,” Cramond said. “The regatta was simply huge with a massive number of boats, trailers, spectators and of course everywhere you looked there seemed to be rowers in their thousands. “Gaining two Bronze Medals has made me re-set my goals to want to become a better oarsman to maybe one day represent Queensland,” Cramond said.

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis
I have been thinking lately about how important it is to buy and shop locally. You might have noticed that ‘local’ is pretty important to us! Wherever possible, I try to purchase either in one of our publication areas or in the area where we live ourselves. And I do so, even if it means it’s a little bit more expensive, or they have to order it in. To me, shopping locally is thinking long term, instead of short term. Short term thinking is all about ‘me’ - I want it now, at a cheap price regardless of who owns the company, how many people they have laid off or cut back the hours of, or whether the money you are handing over will go offshore. Long term thinking is all about the community and supporting our neighbour. It’s about understanding and caring where our dollar goes. It’s about supporting the local shop owner so he can then employ local teenagers who might otherwise find ‘other’ things to do with their time. It’s also about thinking longterm for our local economy. If we don’t support these independent products, services and stores, soon they won’t be there as an option at all. And we are naive if we think the big chain stores are going to keep their prices down once the small local competition is gone. Prices will skyrocket, and we will have no option but to pay them. I don’t want to do that! And I really don’t want to do that knowing that I was one of the ones who helped create that situation. Shopping locally is also about building relationships. If I’m going to shop regularly in a local store, it’s much more likely that I’ll forge a friendship with the staff of that store. And what happens when we are friendly with staff? They are accommodating and friendly right back, particularly as you are showing loyalty and helping them stay in business. The owner also knows that there is a greater chance he/she will see you in the street, or in the school carpark so will be motivated to give you even greater service! And to those of us in business in the local area - take care of your customers who faithfully come and spend their hard earned dollars with you. Treat them nicely! It’s amazing to me how many business owners don’t treat their patrons with respect or any sign that they are grateful that person is shopping there. It’s a two way street isn’t it? As consumers, we need to give the local business owner a chance, before we decide to take our custom outside the area. And as business owners, we need to value and appreciate those who do make the choice to shop locally and support the independent businesses in the area. If as business owners, we keep in mind how we like to be treated as a customer, we may just find there is more synergy between the two, which can only be good for our communities and those of us who live in them.

College News with Steve Croft, Head of College The Springfield Anglican College
The Springfield Anglican College is developing a strong sporting programme and it is pleasing to see the competitiveness of College teams across a range of sports. While the College provides a holistic approach to education with a strong focus on academic achievement, personal growth and development, there is no doubt sport plays a big part in the overall offering and is highly valued by students. Each year College teams are entered into the TAS (The Associated Schools - Years 7-12) and JTAS (Junior TAS Years 4-6) co-educational sporting competitions. The competition consists of 13 independent schools located in Brisbane and surrounding areas played on a home and away basis each Saturday. In Term One, the College entered 19 teams in TAS across Boys Cricket and Volleyball and Girls Basketball and Tennis. Four teams were entered in the JTAS competition in Cricket and Hockey. This is a very high level of representation for what is still a relatively small school of approximately 550 students from Prep to Year Twelve.
Page 6 - May 2013 - The Greater Springfield Times

Under 8’s gear up for another fun activity day
Under 8’s Day on Wednesday 22 May, this year has a theme of Music, Movement and Culture, and the students of Woodcrest State College are excited to explore all the activities available on the day. Under 8’s Day, where the community comes together to have a day just for the children, has been celebrated for more than 100 years and provides students with the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of educational fun. Students from Prep to Year 3 will participate in a variety of activities which will be held in the Junior School. After the activities, students will have a short break and then will continue to celebrate their day with their teachers by having a picnic lunch. Students and teachers are encouraged to dress up on this day in a specific colour which has been allocated to their block. Some activities which will be held this year include cloud dough, building a Beebot City, face painting, instrument making and much more. Teaching staff look forward to celebrating Under 8’s Day with parents, grandparents and friends of the college.

What a wonderful night. Cafe night was held on April 5th where Asian food was on the menu. It was a good night with good entertainment, good food and plenty of dancing. Everyone enjoyed it so much, we are hoping to have another one soon. We also went on a bus trip on Wednesday 17th April to Jacobs Well. We had a good guide who took us around the Sugar Plantation and then on to the Prawn Farm which was so interesting and where we could purchase their lovely Prawns, then onto Harrigans Drift Inn at Calypso Bay for a lovely lunch. Members are planning a seven day trip coming up in June to Charlston Towers and Savannah Country. Anyone interested in joining our club can ring Val on 3288 2689. Whether your child needs to catch up, needs extension and acceleration or has a learning disability, new learning centre, Fruition Tuition at Springfield will have them covered. Catering to all ages from Pre-prep to year 12 and beyond, the expert tutors at Fruition Tuition offer individual tuition solutions for all subjects ie maths, English, physics, chemistry, biology, economics, business studies, writing and spelling. “Fruition tutors understand that everyone learns differently. Accurately diagnosing and identifying a learners strengths and areas of difficulty, allows the tutors to determine how each learner learns best, and know exactly what strategies and tuition services to use,” said Centre Leader, Alex. Fruition Tuition is able to guarantee outcomes in The Basics because they know that their tutoring and services will exceed your expectations. This is the Fruition Promise - in the very unusual event that agreed learning goals set at the commencement of the learning course are not reached within the recommended time frame, and all attendance requirements have been met, Fruition Tuition will continue tuition, at no cost to you, until those agreed levels and goals are reached. “We understand that no two students learn in the same way, so no two learning programs are the same and there is no group learning,” said Alex. “While it is more financially viable to deliver learning in groups, here at Fruition Tuition, we don’t believe that it’s the best way to care for individuals’ needs.” Every learner has an individual course that is driven forward by the learner at their own pace. Catering to a wide variety of learners from Prep to adult, Fruition Tuition provides programs for those who need extension and challenge or scholarship preparation, as well as to those with auditory or visual processing difficulties or behaviour issues which impact on learning in a school setting. Fruition Tuition has proven and unique systems but believe it is the tutors who bring empowerment to the process. It is the people who make all the difference and set this company apart from other tuition services. “Here at Fruition Tuition, we personally facilitate and nurture your child’s learning program so they love what they do and love being a part of Fruition. We utilise the supervision, monitoring, reporting and quality control systems of the company in order to optimise your child’s learning experience here with us at Fruition Tuition. “Experience the Fruition difference - we will exceed your expectations.”
Talented dancers reach for the stars at Robelle Domain
Local resident all enjoyed a great night of entertainment, food and atmosphere at the recent Dance for the Star competition held at Robelle Domain last month. The afternoon started off with the pre-competition, which was won by the juniors at The Studio of Performing Arts who then graduated to the main competition. David Hamer and his partner Tuuli from Odyssey performed an awe-inspiring demonstration revealing just how they have won so many awards together over the past three years. With 10 highly proficient acts representing at least five dance schools and one high school, the crowd enjoyed every one of the polished performances. Winners on the night were: • First Place - The high school seniors Photos courtesy of Rachee Mac Photography group from The Studio of Performing Arts; • Second Place - Springfield Central State High - Umbrella Dance; • Third Place - Grace Knauth from Southern Academy of Dance • Two Highly Commended awards were given - David Benn from Serendipity Dancers, and Ellemay and Chelsiann from FAD. The night finished with an encore from the winners and a spectacular fireworks display by All Fired Up. Organisers of the event were pleased also, that over $1000 was raised on the night for chaplaincy. Now attention turns to the Battle of the Bands which will be held on 22nd September, once again at Robelle Domain starting with some great onstage entertainment and finishing with fireworks.

Finally, the truth about BACK PAIN
Don’t let back pain rob you of your life’s best anymore
Do You Have Any of the Following Conditions? • Lower Back Pain or Stiffness • Muscle spasm or strains • Bulging lumbar discs • Numbness or soreness in your legs • Shooting hip or thigh pain Having back and leg pain can bring life to a standstill. You might not be able to play golf, work, pick up the grandkids or even sit in the car for a 30-minute drive. It’s almost impossible for anyone around you to understand how you feel. You can’t remember the last time you even had a restful night’s sleep.
Is back pain keeping you from enjoying what you love to do?
You’ve got too many dreams left undone to let back pain slow you down. Too many special moments waiting to be experienced with the kids or grandkids.
Life is too short to let pain slow you down. Pain is your body’s warning sign telling you something is wrong. Sure, you can numb the pain if you take enough anti-inf lammatories, narcotics or other pain pill. But if you mask the pain, it can prevent your back from healing – maybe even damage it further (anti-inflammatories work at a cellular level preventing healing). Many of the pain medications available are quite addicting and can have devastating side effects like heart attacks and catastrophic gastric haemorrhage or kidney failure.
Could This Be The Solution To Your Back Pain? We are Drs Michael and Keith C h a r lt o n , o f Fo r e s t L a k e Chiropractic. Over the past 14 years since our doors opened, literally thousands of people with back pain have left the office pain free. We are one of two health centres in Queensland trained and equipped for Clinical Biomechanics of Posture protocols for diagnosis and care of spinal disorders, a new and best researched diagnosis and treatment approach using special equipment onsite. Chiropractic has been around for over a hundred years, and has been used to help everyone from tiny babies to the elderly. Even top sports stars and entertainers … like Tiger Woods, Tony Robbins, Joe Montana, Lance Armstrong, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mel Gibson receive chiropractic care. These professional athletes have the money to hire any kind of doctor they want, yet they choose to have a chiropractor on their team. Here’s what some of the top medical resea rchers had t o say about chiropractic … “ Ma n ipu lation [chiropractic adjustments], with or without exercise, improved symptoms more than medical care did after both 3 and 12 months.”– British Medical Journal “Chiropractor’s manipulation of the spine was more helpful than any of the following: traction, massage, biofeedback, acupuncture, injection of steroids into the spine and back corsets, and ultrasound.” - Stanley Bigos, MD, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery This means in just a matter of days or weeks you could be back on the golf course, enjoying your love life, being able to pick up the grand-children or travelling again.

Springfield Lakes Toastmasters Club has just finished a very successful Speechcraft Course, where participants have overcome these situations. All from the Springfield wider community area, they took the opportunity to learn the tools for presenting speeches in front of an audience. Unbeknownst to many in the Springfield community the local Toastmasters Club was formed seven years ago and is helping many members to gain confidence in the workforce and in their social life. Presenting speeches and gaining leadership skills are just two of the benefits members gain from Toastmasters. Right here on your doorstep you have the same opportunity. The Club celebrated its 200th meeting recently as well as the completion of their Speechcraft course. Five participants received their certificates. With Easter and ANZAC Day now just memories, the year continues to fly by. It seems that it is not only the older generation noticing that the time is going more quickly than it used to, young ones too are remarking on it. Maybe it is because we all lead such busy lives. This is defintely true of the members of the Probus Club of Goodna-Springfield. Our recent visit to the new ABC studios at Southbank was voted most interesting, giving a behind the scenes insight into the production of local radio and television programmes. Our tour of this state-of-the-art facility included watching the reading of a news bulletin being broadcast on 612 ABC local radio, and a visit to the studio from which the nightly news and weather are broadcast, as well as viewing the wonderful workplace that has replaced the studio in Toowong. The Centre is also the home of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and we were able to view the rehearsal studio from the control room with it’s banks of recording equipment. A short walk through Southbank took us to the Plough Inn for lunch, before returning home the way we had come, by train. In contrast, May’s outing is “Breakfast in the Domain”, a BYO barbeque followed by games of all types, from board games to badminton and boules. We would like to issue a cordial invitation to all retired and semi-retired local people to consider membership of our friendly group in 2013. Interested? Your first step is to ring Gaye on 3818 8765 or Vic on 3271 1096 for further details. There is no charge for your first meeting and you are under no obligation to join. Meetings start at 1.30pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Camira Friends and Neighbours Clubhouse in Bruce Lane, off Langley Road, Camira and you will be made most welcome.

Ralph Breaden, President of the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce and Councillor David Morrison overlook the works in progress. Shortly after the April edition of The Greater Springfield Times went to print, news came through from Cr David Morrison’s office that residents and local council were successful in the bid for more car parking at the Springfield train station. “I thank the Main Road and Transport Minister, Scott Emerson for taking the community’s concerns regarding the lack of parking planned for Springfield Central Station seriously,” said Cr Morrison. “Minister Emerson was true to his word in saying he would work with Council for a solution. “The community expects all levels of government to work together for positive outcomes, and an extra 400 car spaces at the station is certainly a positive outcome! “It is thanks to the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce and the community members who wrote to the Minister and me expressing their concerns that we now have this great result.”

Regular dental checks are very important in order to prevent serious health problems. When your pet comes for their dental check, a vet will assess the jaw conformation (under bite/over bite/teeth position), find out if any teeth are missing or if any teeth are broken and advise of the grade of dental disease. Did you know on average an adult dog has 42 teeth and an adult cat has 30 teeth? Small and toy breeds such as Chihuahuas and Maltese terriers tend to have a higher incidence of dental disease compared with larger breeds. However, breeds such as Boxers, who tend to have jaw malocclusions, will also be at higher risk of dental problems. Have you ever noticed a foul odour coming from your pet’s mouth? We call this ‘halitosis’. Sometimes it can be due to diet but more commonly it is due to bacteria in the mouth. Just like humans, plaque builds up on the teeth of our pets every day. We brush our teeth twice daily in order to remove plaque. Once a day teeth brushing is recommended for our pets too but this is not always possible mostly due to lack of cooperation from our pets. If we don’t do something to help our pets, this plaque can build up, trapping bacteria, and eventually form rock hard calculus. The calculus can then push up on the gum line, exposing the teeth roots and loosening teeth. Loose teeth are very painful and need to be removed. Bacteria and plaque also cause inflammation of the gums which is called gingivitis. Bacteria enters the blood stream through the inflamed gum and form a life threatening infection within the heart, kidneys or liver. When a vet or veterinary nurse inspects your pet’s teeth, they will be grading them on severity of plaque build up, gingivitis, calculus, loose teeth and fractured teeth. This dental grading will help to establish what treatment is best suited to your pet. If dental disease is not very severe, improvement of the diet such as feeding raw bones or dental chews might be sufficient, however once plaque has started to build a scale and polish under a general anaesthetic might be required. Once teeth are cleaned back to healthy state dental diets, mouth washes, bones and teeth brushing can help to reduce the amount of plaque building on your pet’s teeth. Some pets that are at higher risk of dental disease might require a scale and polish every 1-3 years. So if you think your fluffy friends breath is a bit off consider booking them in for a dental check and increase the quality of both of your lives.
Let’s get back to our best - Spinal Health Week Back pain is a common ailment for Forest Lake residents. It’s long been known to public health experts that 85% of us all will be disabled with back pain at some stage of our lives. Over two million Australians have back problems each year. The consequences of back pain are serious – it affects families, lifestyle and productivity. And people with long-lasting back pain report 2.5 times more other disorders, such as depression. One in eleven Forest Lake residents can be expected to have back problems this year. And one of the most powerful preventative health steps you can take is to improve your postural fitness. That’s the message from the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (CAA) which is urging residents to Get Back to Your Best this Spinal Health Week (20 – 26 May). Local Chiropractors Drs Michael and Keith Charlton have called upon Forest Lake residents to take up the challenge of improving their postural fitness. “Postural fitness helps you lead an optimal healthy lifestyle; reduce muscle fatigue and improve your postural endurance,” Dr Michael said. “Postural fitness means optimal spinal alignment. It gives you greater strength and endurance, better coordination and balance”. To take control of your postural fitness, you need to think and walk tall and pick an exercise plan that strengthens your core muscles and if needed, to rehabilitate your spine. Dr Michael suggests exercise such as brisk walking, yoga and/or swimming as good choices to improve spine function.
But Dr Michael also says we need to pay attention to how we sit and how long we sit, especially since some spend up to 16 hours a day sitting. Recent research shows that those who sit more than eight hours a day shorten their lives. Tips for improving your posture at work include: try standing when you’re on the phone for extended periods; during meetings, take regular stretch breaks or make them walking meetings; while working at your computer, sit tall, take short breaks to stretch and stand; check and adjust your position regularly. Dr Michael is available to conduct free workplace health talks to educate local businesses and their staff. For advice on how to Sit Right visit www.SitRight.com. au and for a free posture assessment, contact Dr Michael and Dr Keith at Forest Lake Chiropractic, your local CAA chiropractors, on 3372 9944.

With the most recent atrocity involving loss of life by people with a grudge, the bombing at the Boston Marathon, attention turns again to those unanswered questions – why, and what can we do to stop these terrible acts? In their disbelief and pain, people often ask whether there are ways we can prevent such tragedies from occurring. Some suggest that we need to stop conflict altogether, but this is too simple – conflict is inevitable. The more passionate people are about their beliefs, values, and preferences the more likely it is that there will be conflict between those who hold different views. And as much as we’d like to all live in harmony, difference is actually what we humans thrive on, not sameness. The important thing is to ask how we nurture h u m a n i t y, t o l e r a n c e , a n d p e a c e f u l a c c e p t a n c e of differences. It’s important to understand that passionate views on social issues reflect a mixture of emotion as well as intellectual factors. Passionate people have often come to their views after long, hard thinking about the pros and cons of different perspectives. This process of searching for something that answers your own individual questions or doubts is typically painful and difficult, so reaching a conclusion causes a feeling of emotional relief. Emotional relief can be seductive – it’s like a warm drink that fills the veins with peace, and so we are likely to hold firm to those views that give us this feeling. That is, people will defend their views against threats that usually come in the form of challenges from “non-believers”. And of course, the more actively we defend a point of view, the more committed we become to it, even if cracks begin to appear in the views we are hanging on to. Then we start to join up with others who share the same beliefs, and suddenly our place in the social pecking order can only be maintained if we hold firm to our beliefs. We see this in almost every social group. This further reinforces “stuckness” or holding rigidly to beliefs that might eventually start to show cracks. Promoting humanity is the only way we can tackle these serious social issues. Humanity is a process of shifting your social conscience beyond yourself and your immediate network to those people three or more degrees of separation from yourself, for example, relatives of your neighbours friends. You don’t know these people, but you are linked to them through two levels of social connection. It’s seen in the compassion, understanding, kindness and love shown to complete strangers who have a thin thread linking them to yourself. Our brains are wired for social connection: for love, respect, appreciation, acceptance, sympathy, empathy, compassion, and tenderness. These biologically-based emotions define us as humans and underlie passion which can be turned for evil or for good. If we want to truly build a more humane society, we need to actively draw attention to acts of positive passion, such as heroism, as the antidote to acts of negative passion.
Goodna/Redbank Branch National Seniors Update
by Vera Somerwil - Branch President
April was a busy month for the club. For the branch meeting speaker we had Maya Zetlin from the Elder Abuse Unit, Uniting Care give an interesting talk about the increasing numbers of incidents being reported of elder abuse, mainly financial followed by emotional. It has been one of those cultural taboos people didn’t talk about often because of shame and embarrassment but is now being discussed more widely in the community and incidents being reported to authorities. Later the same week, the marketing sub-committee participated in an EXPO held at the Palm Resort, Redbank. It was great to meet other seniors and exhibitors from the industry. Last Tuesday branch members enjoyed a lively morning at Broncos Club, Red Hill with entertainer John McSweeney before enjoying a delicious smorgasbord luncheon in the restaurant. May is the month for our Zone 101 Conference. This year it will be hosted by the Ipswich Branch at the Brothers League Club, Raceview. Ipswich NSA will be celebrating its twenty fifth anniversary that day. Key note speakers include Hon Bronwyn Bishop MP, Shadow Minister of Ageing, Michael O’Neill NSA Chief Executive Officer, Ian Leavers, President, Queensland Police Union. There will be a lively panel discussion with members of the NSA management team. On the 21st May, Damien Powell, Missing Persons Unit, Police Department will be the guest speaker after the general branch meeting. It is also the annual Bring and Buy day. To finish the month, a bus trip has been planned for Fernvale, Wivenhoe Dam for lunch, at the restaurant or as a picnic lunch followed by a visit to the Folk Art Co-operative. The Goodna-Redbank Branch meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the Goodna Leagues Club, Brisbane Terrace, Goodna and commences at 10.00am. EVERY YOUNG PERSON DESERVES A YOUNG LIFE Aged care is no place for any young person. Yet right now, more than 7,500 young Australians with high care needs are living in aged care. 700,000 more are being cared for at home by family and friends, often with limited support. Why? If you, or a loved one, were to suffer an accident or illness that left you, or them, in need of full-time care, there are currently few alternatives for care and housing available. Youngcare works to change this by building more age appropriate housing; financially assisting through At Home Care Grants; and providing information and advice through the Youngcare Connect hotline.
