THE CREATIVE heART by Jolanta Szymczyk Alan Tulloch is introducing a regular drawing group to the activities of the Greater Springfield Creative HeART. Drawin’ Together emphasises the social and technical aspects of drawing. The regular meetings will be on the first Monday night each month, commencing on June 1 from 7pm. Drawing is basic to so many different areas of art and the sessions will support people in whatever their drawing needs. Drawin’ Together will be an opportunity to draw different things each session, ranging from still life to drawing people and abstraction. There will also be opportunities to talk about how to support children in their drawing development. Attendees will be able to bring drawings they have been doing at home along for discussion. We will also have opportunity to discuss drawings that have been created by favourite artists. The group will be lead by local artist and Creative HeART member, Alan Tulloch who has extensive experience in teaching drawing and as an artist working in a wide range of traditional media as well as digital media. For Alan, drawing is an adventure, exploring what we see, the materials we use and the ideas that can materialise in drawings. Alan said, “One of my art teachers once commented that even a footballer’s run to the goals is a drawing.” In harmony with this view, Alan has undertaken projects that have been created with sportsfield markers on areas of grass in Townsville, Canberra and Brisbane. It is just one part of the adventure of drawing. If you are creative yourself and would like to be part of the Creative HeART Greater Springfield – let us know about yourself and become involved. The Creative HeART meetings are on the second Thursday of each month, 7pm to 9pm at the Community Room (1st level), Orion Shopping Centre. All welcome! To be involved in Drawin’ Together please contact Alan on 0412 045 033.

Complimentary consultation when you mention this publication. Complimentary records at start of treatment.

with Susannah Friis Just recently, I received a lovely yellow ticket from a man in blue on the side of the road. It’s my second speeding ticket in the 25 years I’ve had my licence, which is not bad in the grand scheme of things. I’ll leave it to you to decide if I’m a great driver or just very lucky. As I sat there after handing him my licence, I felt the car rock with each car that went past. Judging by the amount the car moved, I think I could safely say that not many others knew or chose to abide by the fact that it was, indeed, a 60km/h zone. I would not be the only one to go home with a yellow piece of paper that day, I suspect! On the way home, I thought about how many cars seemed to be speeding past me and I started to get angry. Why weren’t all of them getting a ticket? Out of all the cars going over the speed limit on that road that day, only a small percentage would pay for it. And the fact that I was one of them didn’t sit well. I started to feel that it was so unfair that I now had a fine and loss of demerit points, while others were going to get away with it. And as I drove home, I noticed every slightest traffic infringement - evidence that it wasn’t just me who did the wrong thing, so why should they get away with it while I got caught!? We have a tendency to do this throughout life, don’t we? We base our behaviour more on those around us than on the actual standards for living. We might treat our spouse horribly but justify it by saying, well, at least I’m not having an affair or beating them. We are impatient and yell at our kids but tell ourselves that at least we’re providing food and clothing for them. We clock off work early but fill out our time sheet to reflect otherwise and defend it by comparing ourselves to the workmate who steals company stationary. We can’t rationalise or excuse our behaviour by comparing it to the lowest denominator. How many of us have said to a teenager “Just because everyone is doing it, doesn’t mean it’s right.? Yet, so often, we think things are okay for the very reason that ‘everyone is doing it’. The fact of the matter is that I received a speeding ticket because I was speeding. End of story. The fact that people speed every day and don’t get caught has nothing to do with it. We must decide for ourselves what our behaviour and actions will be and live accordingly, rather than looking at what everyone else is doing and lowering our standards to be the same or even just slightly better. Our behaviour is our responsibility, no-one else’s; just as we can’t control other people’s behaviour, only they can. I think we need to mind our own business a bit more, in the right way. If we concentrate on what we know to be right and good, it’s much easier to maintain the level of living that we desire, instead of being swayed by what we see others doing.

Readers might remember Holly from a story in The Greater Springfield Times last year. Holly was the first junior player for Springfield United Football Club in 2010. She now plays for Olympic Football Club U13 National Premier League team. Showing that hard work and dedication pay off, Holly was recently selected to represent Queensland at the National titles being held in Coffs Harbour in July. Holly plays as a centre back and loves nothing more than stopping strikers from the opposition scoring goals. From 6 years old Holly has had the dream of one day becoming a Matilda and is now well on her way. Holly’s mother, Pye, President of the Springfield United Football Club will be holding a fundraising night at the Coffee Club Orion on 6th June starting at 6pm. Orion Springfield Central has launched its new swimming complex last month, the second facility for the iconic Peter McMahon’s Swim Factory. Over 300 children took advantage of the free swimming lessons that were offered in the first week of opening, a sure sign that the swimming complex is set to be a hit. Swim Factory Director and four time world surf swimming champion Peter McMahon says his team of qualified and experienced staff look forward to bringing the life long skill of swimming to a new generation of local kids. “Our staff is thrilled to be underway at a new venue after lots of anticipation and planning for several years.” The state-of-the-art facility features an indoor heated pool, spectator seating, showers, change rooms and swim shop and will offer swimming lessons as well as aqua aerobics, swim training and aquatic recreation. “This is a true community facility, designed for all agesinfants to adults,” Mr McMahon said. The new swimming complex is an innovative and community-oriented addition to the $154 million expansion of the centre and will be joined by Event Cinemas, Target and Coles helping Orion to become the ninth largest shopping centre in Queensland. Local Chair Parks, Sport and Recreation Councillor, David Morrison said, “MIRVAC and Peter McMahon should be congratulated on bringing the Swim Factory to Orion Springfield Central. “As an ex Physical Education Teacher, I know the importance of all children in Queensland learning water survival skills even before they learn to swim and welcome Peter McMahon Swim factory to Springfield Central.” The Swim Factory and Mr McMahon have been teaching Ipswich kids to swim for more than 20 years with the first Swim Factory located on the old McMahon’s Soft Drinks site that was opened in 1934 and operated by his father. The addition of a second Swim Factory location at Orion Springfield Central is an important expansion of the McMahon family’s role in the local Ipswich business community. Call The Swim Factory for more information about lessons and times on 3470 0556.

May is Domestic Violence Prevention Month The Month of May typically celebrates Mother ’s Day but it also signifies Domestic Violence Prevention Month. One in three women will experience some form of domestic violence. Sadly, one woman each week will die at the hands of a partner; they are mothers, daughters or sisters, even sadder is the fact that one in four children will also witness domestic violence. This month’s key aims are to: raise community awareness of domestic and family violence and its impacts; promote a clear message of no tolerance of domestic and family violence in Queensland communities; ensure those who are experiencing domestic and family violence know how to access help and support; and encourage people who use abuse and/or violence to take responsibility for their abusive behaviour and seek support to change. (L-R) Madina Mahmood, participant in the Public Speaking Competition and presenter This awareness campaign at the Region Conference, Ralda Forzin then President of S.I. of South Queensland resonates with the goals of and Prabha Nandagopal, a human rights lawyer at the Region Conference. Soroptimist International. Its core goals are to Educate, Empower and Enable, and to improve the lives and the status of women. Domestic violence was one of the topics addressed by the participants in the recent Public Speaking competition conducted by Soroptimist International of South Queensland. The young women who spoke all related the issue of violence against women to social and cultural attitudes that fail to recognise equality and distributed power unevenly. Soroptimists have recognised that men too are subject to stereotyping, and the organisation was first to invite male speakers to advocate for gender equality, at their workshop at the Commission on the Status of Women in 2014. One of the sessions at the recent conference at Indooroopilly was dedicated to domestic violence, with the focus of the session being on the role of men and boys, not only as perpetrators, but also as part of the solution. Luise Manning, who won the use of a coffee cart as part of a Community Achievement Award, is using the donation to raise funds for a new project ‘Giving Women Voices, to raise awareness of domestic violence. The event will be held later this year and will coincide with Child Protection Week in September. It is hoped that the Soroptimist photo exhibition produced by victims of domestic violence can be displayed at the same time. The club aims to provide projects that will benefit the community here and abroad. If you would like to find out more about Soroptimist International and how you can make a difference in your community, meetings are held on the first and third Monday of every month at the Community Room in the Orion Shopping Centre at 7pm to 8.30pm. “ New Look, Same Friendly Team Residents would be familiar with Ipswich Cares which for the last seven years has helped raised funds for a humanitarian need by holding fundraising events each September. In 2013 Ipswich Cares funded a building in Nepal which is now being used to temporarily house 65 girls who have been displaced by the recent earthquake. Local residents who are looking to help Nepal at this time, can give to Transform the Nations (www.transformthenations. org/), a well-established NGO in Nepal ready to provide support and care for people in need. Your donations will help immediate requirements such as medical aid, emergency accommodation, food, clothing and counselling. Thousands of people are hopelessly wandering the streets, as even those whose houses still stand are afraid to reenter their homes for fear of structural damage or further tremors. Newly orphaned children are in dire need of care. All gifts over $2 are tax deductible, with 100% of donations used to directly help those in need in Nepal.

:WYPUNÄLSK )YHUJO update by Allen O’Toole, acting President We had a most enjoyable meeting at the Springfield Tavern last month attended by 25 members and guests. The evening started with a getting to know each other session. We have a varied cross section of people with all types of skills and talent. Victoria Shorten then gave a very interesting talk on podiatry; how to look after your feet, what shoes to wear etc. This generated an enormous amount of interest with Victoria spending time with several people after the meeting closed checking peoples feet. Many thanks to Victoria for a most enlightening talk. Our next meeting is at the Springfield Tavern on 20th May at 6.30 pm. We are having a seniors dinner followed by a talk by Raylee Huggett on Senior Entrepreneurship. This should be most interesting as a way of supplementing superannuation or the pension. The Tavern has a good menu of seniors meals at $12 each or other meals are available. Entry is $3 each with tea and coffee provided. Raffle tickets are also available. We would also like to thank the Springfield Tavern for providing the venue. Any queries contact Allen on 0400 525 803 or send an e-mail to ajotool11@gmail.com.

The Multipurpose Hall at The Springfield Anglican College was filled to capacity for a wonderful celebration for the inauguration of a brand new church earlier this year. The Most Reverend Dr Phillip Aspinall, Anglican Archbishop of Brisbane, presided over the occasion. The new faith community, in front of supporters from the local Springfield churches and the community, The Springfield Anglican College, and across the wider Anglican Church community, affirmed that they would support the newly commissioned priest, Rev Graham Dorman. Reverend Graham Dorman thanked all who had worked tirelessly to bring the community to this point, and said he was most encouraged by the huge amount of support, and by the gifts which had been received from many quarters. He particularly thanked Steve Croft the Head of College at The Springfield Anglican College, the staff and board for their welcome, and he also looked forward to the day when the present accommodation became too small. Steve Croft said he was excited by the growing and flourishing relationship between the College and the Church and looked forward to discovering new ways of growing together as an Anglican presence in the community. As most of the students of the community were tucked up in bed, a delightful visual presentation of their activities was shown. The music and the singing was vibrant and enthusiastic. A warm welcome awaits anyone who would like to join the parish members every Saturday at 5pm in the Multi-Purpose Hall at the Senior Campus of TSAC on the Springfield Greenbank Arterial Road near the Springfield Central train station. The service is followed by refreshments. For more information, contact Rev Graham Dorman on 3818 2545, or 0488 180 542 or send an email to g.a.dorman@ bigpond.com.

NATIONAL SENIORS UPDATE

Goodna/Redbank Branch by Vera

Somerwill

Greetings from the National Seniors Goodna/Redbank Branch. With May comes Mothers Day, I hope all of the mothers who read this have had a great day, perhaps you were taken out for lunch or received a lovely box of chocolates. Last month, 13 club members joined the Ipswich National Seniors Branch for an adventurous day out travelling by bus to the Gold Coast, then boarded one of those super trams for the trip from Southport to Broadbeach and then to Kurrawa Surf Club for lunch. Our club greatly enjoyed meeting members of a sister club, and look forward to other outings in the future. Club happenings this month include the Branch meeting on Tuesday 19th May with guest speaker, Gay Ferris from the Department of Human Services. She will bring everyone up to date with latest happenings for holders of a concession card. Then the big annual event for Zone 101, the Annual Conference, which will be held on Thursday 28th May at the Richlands Lions Club, Richlands. The program will be packed with interesting presentations. Morning Coffee Club for Wednesday 3 June will be at the Salvation Army Café, Smiths Road, Goodna, at the usual time of 10.00am. For the branch meeting on 16th June we will have a popular entertainer Andrew Carins with ‘Every Song tells a Story’. Branch meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at the Goodna Leagues Club, Goodna, commencing at 10.00am for 10.30am start. For further information please contact Val Randle at 3297 5735.

It has been a very busy start to Term Two at the College. ANZAC Day services were held on both campuses, a large contingent of the College community attended the Springfield ANZAC Day service at Robelle Domain, Foundation Day services celebrated the College’s seventeen years in operation and preparations are well advanced for the Official Opening of the new Creative Arts Precinct on the Secondary Campus. Late last term, Independent Schools Queensland released their findings of the latest ‘What Parents Want Survey’. This is the third such survey, with the two prior surveys undertaken in 2006 and 2010. The most recent survey revealed seven in every ten parents start thinking about which school their child will attend at least two years before the child is due to commence, up from five in every ten parents in 2010. The top five factors ranked as the most important for parents were: • Preparation for student to fulfil their potential in later life; • Good discipline; • The quality of teachers; • Encouragement of responsible attitude to school work; and • Teaching methods/philosophy.

Page 14 - May 2015 - The Greater Springfield Times

The top four factors were also the same top four in the 2010 survey. Surveys such as this provide a broader perspective of the value parents place on the various aspects of schooling and, as such, are helpful to schools as they shape their overall curriculum offering going forward. In the case of The Springfield Anglican College, such data is very clearly aligned to what we know our parent body is seeking when enrolling their children at the College. ‘Their Future’ is the mantra the College uses to guide all aspects of the College operation. The College’s holistic approach to education is central in assisting students develop the knowledge, skills and understandings required to enter the world beyond school, with high standards and high expectations underpinning daily life at the College. At the College there is also a clear aspiration to enhance the quality and breadth of educational opportunity to which the staff at the College are to be highly commended. As one example, this year the College has introduced a mentoring programme for Year Eleven and Twelve students. Key staff meet with students on an individual basis to discuss progress, assist in goal setting and provide guidance. While it is early days, the students involved are indicating the programme is making a positive difference. Mr Steve Croft Head of College

ROTARY CLUB of Greater Springfield

UPDATE BY Chris Steinback

Rotary International is urging its 1.2 million members worldwide to assist the victims of earthquakeravaged Nepal in any way possible, including contributing to Shelterbox. Shelterbox is an international Rotary managed disaster relief charity that provides shelter, warmth and dignity to those who have been affected by disasters worldwide. Rotary delivers boxes of aid, each of which provides an extended family with quality survival equipment and shelter to use while they rebuild their homes. Rotary International President Mr Gary Huang said, “Rotary members worldwide stand together in expressing profound sadness at the devastation resulting from the deadly earthquake in Nepal. As we mourn the thousands of lives lost, Rotary joins other international agencies in providing immediate relief to survivors through our partnership with ShelterBox and mobilizing our expertise to support long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts throughout the country.” After Nepal’s worst earthquake in 80 years, hospitals in the country’s capital Kathmandu were devastated, forcing medical staff to treat their patients outside with dwindling supplies. However, ShelterBox has been able to provide tents to four hospitals in the city creating safe, covered spaces where patients can be treated in privacy. They will be used for carrying out minor operations, changing dressings and as mobile health clinics too. Some months ago the members of the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield challenged themselves to raise the funds to purchase a Shelterbox as a community service project. With the help of Rotary clubs like the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield and their kind donations, more families like those displaced in Nepal are safe and together as they begin to rebuild their homes and their lives. Rotary clubs in Australia, United States, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Bangladesh and others are coordinating their support for immediate needs such as dry foods, tents, blankets, first aid kits and safe drinking water. Looking ahead, Rotary will focus on intermediate and long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts. The experience and knowledge of Rotary members in Nepal will be essential in ensuring that resources are used for projects and programs that address true community needs. The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield holds its meetings every Tuesday evening at 6.30pm at Orion Shopping Centre Springfield Central. For enquiries, contact Club Secretary Lachlan Clarke on 0409 711 199, or President Keith Reinke on 0415 773 059.

Welcome to the May column of the Goodna/Springfield Probus Club. How lovely to be experiencing some cooler weather at last; hope you agree that a few weeks of wearing boots and jumpers will be a pleasant change. The picture above shows some of us enjoying a recent car-pool outing to Normanby Wines at Harrisville where we tasted several fine products made at the winery. The landlord, Mike, regaled us with some of the tales of life running a pub in ‘the bush’, then it was off to the Royal Hotel for a very satisfying lunch and home through the lush green countryside courtesy of the recent rains. This was another enjoyable outing for our friendly club. The excursion for May will be closer to home, a breakfast barbecue at Robelle Domain on Thursday, 21 May. BYO everything; we can use the electric barbecues for bacon and eggs etc. and there are outlets for boiling the billy...very civilised! After breakfast, we will enjoy board and ball games and can head home individually when we have had enough. Lifts can be arranged if required. In June, we are heading to the city for a look at the beautiful Roma Street parklands and coffee at the Melange Café. We may be able to incorporate the lunchtime music concert at City Hall and have lunch in the city, more details in next month’s column. Madonna King was our guest speaker for May. Madonna, who has won several ABC awards for journalism, gave us an interesting snapshot of life as a journalist in Queensland. Madonna’s book on award winning Doctor Ian Frazer ‘The Man Who Saved a Million Lives’ was available for purchase. Monthly coffee date for June is Friday, 12 June at the Coffee Club at Orion. Monthly pub lunch for June is at Spring Lake Hotel on Monday, 29 June. All members are welcome at all activities and potential members are encouraged to contact Joe on the number below for details. There is no charge for your first meeting and you are under no obligation to join. Your first step is to ring Joe on 0417 288 390 or join us at 1.30pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Camira Friends and Neighbours Clubhouse in Bruce Lane (cnr Langley Road), Camira.

Local school brings Backyard Blitz to residents There is a somewhat secret group of enthusiastic students in Year 10 at Staines Memorial College who call themselves the ‘Blokes Group’. This group of young men meet with Chaplain Peter Jenyns each week to plan and develop practical skills to assist families in the community who need a bit of a ‘backyard blitz’. Recently a team of five students and two leaders ventured out to a nearby resident’s house and worked on transforming some overgrown gardens and trees to a neat and lush back yard. Pictured are leaders – Chaplain Peter Jenyns and Rob Price with Liam Tolliday and Bryson Kington who form part of the Blokes Group. These young chaps, with five other fellow students, spent most of the school day mowing, painting, whipper snipping, weeding and clearing rubbish for an elderly resident who lives on their own. Chaplain Peter Jenyns said the group works well as a team and the boys enjoy the outdoor work. He said they learn valuable hands on skills and come up with strategies to work efficiently in the time they have at the site. Bryson Kington said he especially enjoyed being out and about and doing some physical work outside the classroom. Liam Tolliday said the Blokes Group was a great way at Staines to make friends and do interesting things together each week. All the boys said that one of the best parts of the Backyard Blitz is the ice blocks and soft drinks at the end.

Never forget to put your bins out again

Never forgetting your bin night again is now a reality thanks to a new mobile app available from Ipswich City Council. The Ipswich Bin App has been set-up by Ipswich Waste Services to give residents quick and easy access to the information they need for bin night. The free mobile app provides bin night reminders and is linked to individual addresses to show exactly what bin needs to be placed on the kerbside on a particular night. The app platform also provides a web-based search function that is available on Ipswich Online. Residents can type in their address and details of their bin collection days will appear with a printable personalised collection calendar. The app also supports one-off events like the Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Day and can broadcast messages to everyone who has downloaded the app, which will be useful to advise residents of service disruptions and emergency events. The app also has a waste materials module to allow council to list the appropriate bin for a particular waste item and provide recycling instructions. Sign up for the app and be reminded in plenty of time to organise your rubbish and bins in advance for collection each week. The app can be accessed at www.ipswich.qld.gov.au/ipswichbinapp. Further information is available by calling council on 3810 6666 or visit their website at: www.ipswich.qld.gov.au.

National Families Week - Stronger families, stronger communities National Families Week will be held of Friday 15 May until Thursday 21 May in conjunction with the United Nations International Day of Families. The aim is to celebrate the vital role that families play in Australian society and is funded by the Department of Social Services as a valuable opportunity to demonstrate that families, across the lifespan, are integral to our civil society. The theme this year is ‘Stronger families, stronger communities’ which highlights the important role families play as the central building block of our communities and that community wellbeing is enhanced by family wellbeing. If you would like to celebrate National Families Week with the wider community, contact Families Australia on (02) 6273 4885 or email admin@familiesaustralia.org.au. National Reconciliation Week - It’s time to change it up National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is celebrated across Australia to commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey and to learn about our shared history, culture and achievements. May 27 - Marks the anniversary of Australia’s most successful referendum which saw over 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise them in the national census. 3 June, 1992 - The High Court of Australia delivered its landmark Mabo decision which legally recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a special relationship to the land. For more information about events in your local area or to register your own event, please visit: www.reconciliation.org.au and be sure to share your activities on social media using the #NRW2015 hashtag.

A message from the Mayor’s Desk WITH THE MAYOR - COUNCILLOR PAUL PISASALE Volunteers are the lifeblood of the community and contribute much to the fabric of the city. They help to boost community pride and encourage a sense of belonging. Ipswich is home to thousands of volunteers providing the manpower that keeps a wide range of the city’s sporting and community groups and services going. The significant contribution that volunteers make to the social and economic development of our community is highly valued and this month we are paying recognition to just some of Ipswich’s volunteers. Firstly we acknowledged the work of the Ipswich State Emergency Units or our orange army as we call them. Ipswich is home to four State Emergency Services (SES) groups at Ipswich, Marburg, Rosewood and Goodna which are staffed by a dedicated band of volunteers who respond to all sorts of disaster situations in the community. The work they perform varies from providing emergency lighting and assisting with police crime scenes, traffic accidents and fires to assisting with traffic control services for community events and parades such as the recent Ipswich Festival and helping conduct land searches. They are best known for the work they do during severe weather events and there has been a number of those in recent years to test them and they have passed with flying colours. The units are always on the lookout for new members so if you are interested call 3810 7839 or visit them online at www.ipswichses.net.au/. Recognition was also given this month to council volunteers through the 2015 Celebration and Volunteer Recognition Awards. This special morning officially recognised the 273 volunteers within council who work within a wide range of areas and programs. These volunteers can be found working as gallery assistants at the Ipswich Art Gallery, spending time at the Ipswich Nature Centre as animal care volunteers or supporting Ipswich Libraries as a member of the Friends of the Ipswich Libraries Service better known as FOILS. a look back at Greater Springfield with Cr David Morrison

Orion Springfield Central 2005 and 2015 In 2005, before one brick was laid at Orion Springfield Central I remember very clearly looking over the site at the official sod turning with Springfield Land Corporation’s Deputy Chairman Mr Bob Sharpless. Ten years later Orion Springfield Central is a thriving Town Centre. Stage One was opened in 2007 and consists of retail, commercial and professional space along with 2094 car parks. Stage two will provide 1200 additional car parks and will include Event Cinemas, Coles, Target, JB Hi-Fi, Hotel, and approximately 80 more specialty shops. There is an air of excitement and anticipation within the community as we all look forward to Stage Two opening later this year.

Veterinary News by Dr Ian Gorrie BVSc

Parvo virus in dogs

With its symptoms of severe blood-stained diarrhoea, vomiting, dehydration, parvo virus is one of the worst of the canine group of preventable diseases. This is particularly worrying for new dog owners as parvo virus is most severe in puppies with mortality rates of up to 80% in untreated cases. Veterinarians around Brisbane have reported more than the normal number of cases this year. Although Canine Parvovirus is not a reportable disease, in the last 12 months alone 1088 cases of Canine Parvovirus were recorded with Disease Watchdog from throughout Australia. There are a number of possible reasons for this. Like a lot of viral diseases, parvovirus has been well contained by an aggressive vaccination program since it began to spread in the 1980’s. We only see parvo virus now in dogs that have no immunity due to not being vaccinated or inadequate vaccinations. The wetter weather recently may also be a factor. Parvo virus is passed in dog faeces then lives in the ground and is hard to kill. When it rains and the ground gets muddy, people can take it home with them on their shoes or car tyres. Treatment has improved since the initial worldwide outbreaks 30 years ago. Once suspected, patients are admitted into hospital for tests and gastroenteritis treatment based around IV fluid therapy. There are many complications of the disease and patients are monitored for these. In house pathology, particularly to monitor serum electrolytes has improved treatment and survival rates. The current use of plasma products to supply protein and antibodies to these deficient patients has also improved survival rates. There is no doubt prevention by vaccination is the best treatment. Puppies should be first vaccinated from six weeks of age and receive three boosters a month apart. Adults are then best vaccinated every year with a combination of Distemper, Hepatitis and Kennel Cough vaccines commonly called a C5.
