Salvos ‘watch them grow’ plant nursery supporting the local community If you’re looking for new plants for the garden, why not support the new Salvation Army church venture ‘Watch Them Grow’?

The ‘Watch Them Grow’ commercial plant nursery at Riverview is now being managed by the Bundamba Salvation Army Church, with the nursery run largely by volunteers from the church.

The money raised from the nursery supports the local community, as well as aiding the provision of help and care for asylum seekers.

The community can support this initiative by purchasing from the ‘Watch them Grow’ plant stall at Bundamba Salvation Army church, corner Brisbane Road and Coal Street, Bundamba.

The plant stall is open for business every Saturday from 8am to noon and the public are welcome to come and purchase plants to brighten their gardens ready for spring and summer.

Many varieties of summer plants are on sale including annual flowers such as pansies, petunias and daisies as well as ferns and other shade plants. The quality and prices of all the plants on sale are excellent value.

Free tea and coffee is available for all customers while they choose which plants to buy. Parking is available in Coal Street and behind the Salvation Army hall.

With Mother’s Day gone for another year, it’s a good time to reflect on mothering and the role of mothers in our society and communities.

Sadly, for many the relationship with their mother is not an easy or pleasant one. I’ve been fortunate to have had a steady, loving, supportive relationship with mine, and because of this, my heart breaks for those who don’t.

I was chatting about mothers with some friends the other day, and out of the conversation came a recognition for the need for mothering types of relationships, for all of us but more so if our relationship with our mother is not the best.

In the street I spent my teenage years, I had a few mothers. They were women who offered a different perspective than my own mother, and who were a little removed emotionally from me. Because they weren’t as emotionally invested in me as my own mother, they could perhaps see things from another angle and give unique insight. I will always be thankful for those who took an interest in me as a growing young woman and for the time they spent listening to me and my teenage angst, most of which was unwarranted, mind you!

During the conversation with my friends, I said the words “we need to embrace universal motherhood”. We all chuckled at the slightly ‘hippy’ turn of phrase but it’s true, we need to be ‘mothering’ one another.

Let’s get a definition of what it means to ‘mother’ someone. According to my trusty dictionary it means to look after, care for, take care of, nurse, protect, tend, raise, rear, pamper, coddle, cosset, fuss over.

So, really, mothering shouldn’t just be left to mothers, or even women. Mothering should be what we all do for everyone. As adults, we don’t need ‘mothering’ all the time but there are times we need to be looked after, taken care of, or fussed over. In our friendships, we need to be looking for opportunities to show care and nurture our friends.

Mothering others means we give them attention, we listen, we take note of when they need some extra care and pampering. It was interesting to note that the antonym for ‘mothering’ is neglect. And when you think about it, when we neglect something, we give it no attention at all, no care or interest.

Anytime of the year is a good time to appreciate those ‘mothers’ who fill the need in your life for that little bit of TLC. And while you’re appreciating them, take a look around for those people in your life who might need some mothering themselves, after all, we do need to ‘embrace universal motherhood’!

The Creative heART - the skills incubator The Creative HeART is reaching far and wide into the local community and beyond.

Growing interest in the group’s activities is reflected in the volume of enquires Jolanta Szymczyk, the driver behind the vision, receives daily since its inception and its first public meeting early this year.

“As the Greater Springfield’s creative community is stepping out into the public light, we are attracting attention from a diverse range of practicing artists, crafters, creative individuals and businesses. It is extremely rewarding to see such positive responses to this vision in our community,” said Jolanta.

The group is shaping up to be a public and networking forum for artists, crafters and creatives practicing in a variety of mediums as well as community members drawn to The Creative HeART’s presence.

The group is strongly represented by creative practitioners such painters, water colour artists or mixed media artists to name a few.

Fashion and design is represented by textile and fibre artists, couture and fashion designers, fashion photographers, fashion event organisers and other textile and design practitioners. Architecture and landscape related businesses are also present amongst the group’s members.

Ceramic and porcelain artists are making their mark as well as public installation artists, journalists, novel writers, arts therapists and community development specialists.

Art and creative industry educators, teachers, trainers, tutors and mentors have also been highly visible as well as multimedia, media, marketing and public relations practitioners.

Very soon the group will commence its first public workshop program development to mark its presence in the community and to engage residents in a variety of creative practices.

With the help of his employer, Bendigo Bank Springfield Lakes, Augustine Heights resident, Ash Kumar will be bringing his workplace, friends, family and clients together for a Biggest Morning Tea. Set to take place on the official Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea event date, Thursday May 22, the morning tea will be held at the Bendigo Bank Springfield Lakes branch located at 15/31 Springfield Lakes Boulevard, Springfield Lakes at 10.30am.

This will be the second year Ash raises his cuppa in the fight against cancer. Inspired by co-worker, Christine, after she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, Ash is keen to raise even more than the $700 that was raised last year.

The Bendigo Bank Piggy will be in attendance at the morning tea, where participants will enjoy plenty of food as well as raffles. Bendigo Bank has also donated Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea merchandise which will be available for sale on the day.

Local residents are encouraged to come along and help make a difference. The cost of the morning tea is just $5 for tea/coffee/soft drink and a plate of food.

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said every cup counts in the fight against cancer.

“Cancer Council Queensland has been making a real difference in the lives of Queenslanders affected by cancer, thanks to the wonderful support of people like Dianne and their communities,” she said.

“Joining Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is an easy, fun and delicious way that we can work together for a cancer free future.

“Whether it’s a simple morning tea with workmates, a sophisticated high tea with friends or a school bake sale, you’ll be helping one in two Queenslanders who will be diagnosed with cancer by age 85.”

All Queenslanders are invited to join the party and celebrate the 21st year of Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. The official Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea date is Thursday, May 22 but events can be held anytime throughout May or June.

The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield celebrated its official charter recently when the new club was welcomed into the Rotary International family of 33,000 Rotary clubs in 200 nations around the world.

In attendance at the charter function held at the Brookwater Golf and Country Club, were over 110 Rotarians, friends and guests including the Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neuwman and Rotary International Director John Boag. Proceeds from the evening were donated to the Rotary Drought Disaster Relief Campaign to assist our farmers and communities in the drought areas of Chinchilla, Dalby, St. George, Roma, Mitchell and Charleville.

Men and women around the world including the 22 charter members of the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield are making a difference to the quality of life of others by accepting the challenge of volunteer service through their local Rotary Club.

The President of Rotary International, Ron Burton, said to the new members, “My life has been greatly enriched and truly changed because of my membership in Rotary. I wish for each and every one of you the same joy and fulfilment that I have personally enjoyed over these many years as a member of the Rotary Club of Norman Oklahoma.

Members and staff work side by side in the day to day operations of Jacaranda Clubhouse.

Staff are sufficient in number to facilitate the running of the Clubhouse, but few enough in number to make the daily operations of the Clubhouse impossible without members assistance and involvement.

Jacaranda Clubhouse is currently running a weekly Cupcake Fundraiser to raise money for increasing the members IT skills. Once this money is raised, fundraising will begin for another project. The idea is to not only raise money but also increase member’s skills in marketing, baking, budgeting, packaging and community relations.

Jacaranda Clubhouse is also in the process of opening a Café to the public which will increase members skills and give real life experience in working in a café.

Grandparent carers don’t need to feel alone

Are you a grandparent or kinship carer? MyTime for grandparents and kinship carers is a support group for carers who are caring for children aged up to 18 years old in a full time capacity.

The Australian Government Initiative has been organised by Playgroup Australia with eight groups up and running in Queensland since it’s inception two years ago.

MyTime for Grandparents is a place to meet other grandparents or kinship carers who are the full-time carers of their grandchildren over a cuppa and morning tea. At the support groups participants can discuss issues that face those caring for grandchildren, while giving the opportunity to socialise and share ideas with others who understand the challenges and issues of the caring role.

Participants can gather information about the role of a carer, with the possibility of guest speakers coming along to talk about issues relevant to those attending.

Some grandparents are single carers with health and financial problems themselves and may be caring for not only one but often two to three children. The purpose of the support group is to give support and share that they are not alone in this venture. The Ipswich Group meets at the Conference Room, Humanities Centre, Ipswich City Council, Cnr. South & Nicholas Streets, opposite the Metro-Ipswich International Hotel.

Meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month from 9am - 11am. The next meeting is Tuesday 27 May. With morning tea provided, there is no charge to attend the group. Childminding is available on request and prior arrangement.

BY THE MAYOR - PAUL PISASALE The Ipswich Festival wrapped up last month and what an exciting three weeks it was.

This weekend we have the Ipswich Show and Friday May 16 was a public holiday if you work or go to school in Ipswich.

If you missed some of the Festival entertainment, drop in to the Ipswich Showgrounds for an exciting weekend at the show.

The agricultural displays and competitions are always a lot of fun to explore and watch and this year Australian band Justice Crew performed on the Friday night. Other exciting events include a demolition derby, monster trucks and fireworks as well as plenty of trade stalls, side-show alley, rides and showbags.

On June 1 Robelle Domain will look like a rainbow fell on it with The Colour Run, also known as the Happiest 5K on the Planet.

The Colour Run is a unique paint race that celebrates healthiness, happiness and individuality and this year we’re excited it will be hosted in Ipswich.

Runners from around the south east region will flock to Springfield Central for this exciting event and many will be taking the train which has been well used since opening.

Springfield Yarners in close-knit project As the colder weather starts to hit, it’s time to pick up the knitting needles and join the Springfield Yarners to make blankets for the Salvation Army Blanket Appeal. Club coordinator and University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Education Lecturer, Dr Nicole Ann Todd said the group, now in its eighth year of knitting, had already handed over nearly 300 knitted and crocheted blankets.

“This year we decided to have the Salvation Army donate the blankets to women in shelters,” Dr Todd said.

“The blankets go with the women as they move on so more are always needed. Is this really helping anyone?’ The answer is a big ’yes’.

“We found out one woman in the past was quite emotional saying no one had ever given her anything like that before and another woman loved the colours of the blanket so much that she decorated her room in matching colours.”

Dr Todd started the group eight years ago and has seen it grow beyond what she could have ever imagined.

“A small group of knitters have been coming weekly to knit for an hour on campus however the majority of blankets are made up of strips sent in from the community from ladies I have never met,” she said.

“I get a real lift from the thought that there are people out there who are willing to offer countless hours of their own time to do something for someone they have never met. It is all about the local community – the knitters in the community around the USQ campus are providing blankets for others in the community. The beauty of Springfield Yarners is that you can knit at home or come in to knit with like-minded people and you don’t have to knit a whole blanket yourself. A number of women in the group sew together the donated strips to make a whole blanket or lap rug.”

Community members can still get involved, the group accepts knitted strips and completed blankets all year round. Just drop them into USQ Springfield’s main building reception or library. Donation of 8ply acrylic yarn is much sought after – any left-over balls from other projects are fine however novelty yarn cannot be used.

“We plan to hand over blankets to the Salvation Army in early July but accept strips after that time – ready for the next hand over,” Dr Todd said.

“A huge thank you to all those knitters out there who send in strips or blankets - every strip counts and is used.”

The Springfield Yarners meet the first Monday of every month at 1pm at the 6th floor staffroom at USQ Springfield. Knitters are very welcome to join the group for a knit and a chat.

Instructions: Using 8ply acrylic yarn and 4mm needles, cast on 45 stitches. Knit every row (garter stitch) until the strip measures 1.5m in length. Any colour is fine. Strips can be one colour or multiple colours. This is a great way of using up left over yarn and clearing space in that cupboard! Six strips are used to make one blanket. Dr Todd is happy to receive any number of strips which are then sewn together to make completed blankets. Crocheted blankets are also welcome.

Watoto Choir comes to Springfield Springfield Christian Family are pleased to host the Watoto Children’s Choir as part of their family fun day celebrations on Saturday May 24 from 2.30pm and 5pm at Robelle Domain.

With vibrant, original African music, energetic dance routines and life-transforming stories, the tour is indicative of the new generation of leaders emerging out of Watoto.

“Through the choir’s Concert of Hope, we share a message of transformation by telling the story of Africa’s rescued orphans and women,” says Gary Skinner, Watoto founder.

With its genuine appeal, accompanied by music and dance - an energetic fusion of contemporary gospel and traditional African rhythm - the globally acclaimed Watoto Children’s Choir has travelled internationally since 1994 as ambassadors for the millions of children in Africa, orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS, war and poverty. Each of the children in the choir has suffered the loss of one or both parents and now lives in the Watoto Children’s Villages where they receive the care and nurture they need to grow up as productive citizens of their country.

Cr David Morrison, Chair of parks, Sport and Recreation, was excited to inspect the genesis of Ipswich’s first Swimming Lagoon at Robelle Domain, Springfield Central, recently.

Like many projects, much of the work is not seen as it is under ground. Cr David Morrison was able to witness the 1.8m diameter pipes being placed under the location of the Lagoon to ensure they capture all the storm water that would usually flow down the existing gully.

The community have embraced the announcement of the lagoon and are eagerly awaiting its completion which is planned for December 2014 weather permitting.

Cr David Morrison said, “The foundation and preparation that nobody ever sees once the project is complete are vital to get right as we all want the lagoon to be around for many years.”

Plans are being finalised to determine the final layout, landscape and lighting for the area.

Welcome to the May edition of the Greater Springfield Times. We have just completed the nicest month of the year - April, and not because of the holidays of Easter and Anzac Day but because of the lovely weather.

I attended the Anzac Day dawn service at Springfield, Robelle Domain. The community support has increased significantly since the first time I attended seven years ago when it was held at the Southern Queensland University campus. It was rewarding to see so many families and young people attend this year.

The Guest Speaker for the April meeting was Roger Overall from Ipswich Men’s Shed. This is a ‘not for profit’ organization which provides activities for men of all ages.

Roger provided an insight into the activities available for the men, all very interesting and worthwhile.

The branch also participated in the launch of promotional activities for the Department of Social Services, with a presentation and brochures providing contact details for the My Aged Care website www. myagedcare.gov.au and 1800 200 422 phone number.

A number of members enjoyed visiting the new Supreme Court on Tuesday the 13th May, then lunching in the city. The branch will welcome Councillor Paul Tully, Division 2, at its May 20th meeting to provide members with an update on local Council issues.

The next big event will be the Zone 101 Annual Conference to be held on Thursday 29th May with delegates attending from the fifteen branches, Cleveland to Ipswich. Forest Lake National Seniors will be the host branch for the event at the Brisbane Lions Club, Richlands.

Don’t forget Brian’s coffee club will meet on Wednesday 3rd June at Toscani’s Restaurant, Orion at 10.00am. A date claimer for the branch meeting in June, Joel Archer will present an Old Time movie morning, this is a fun event there will be a small cost.

A Gallup Poll recently surveyed 7,000 students in Years Five to Twelve in 36 schools across six states and found that only 51 per cent of students were “hopeful” - that is, students who “possess numerous ideas and abundant energy for the future.”

The survey found that students become less engaged as they progress through their schooling life, with only one in three believing they will find a good job when they leave school.

It is not only hope that students appear to lack, but also selfefficacy. According to the survey, less than one in four Year Twelve students felt “they can find lots of ways around any problem.”

Overall, the survey found that 72 per cent of Year Five students were engaged in school compared to 49 per cent in Year Twelve, although there was a slight spike in Year Eleven with 54 per cent of students engaged.

The survey also found that those students who believe their school “is committed to building the strengths of each student” are significantly more hopeful, more engaged and have higher wellbeing.

The survey results are quite surprising and certainly provide schools with a significant challenge. On the one hand, it is understood that student engagement in their schooling can be an issue from time-to-time and for a variety of reasons.

However, on the other hand, it is equally well understood that the importance of getting the most out of ones schooling experience underpins, in a significant way, the potential pathways beyond school.

At The Springfield Anglican College, we have a clear focus on the individual student and their progress, hence the capped College enrolment of approximately 1,000 students from Prep to Year Twelve. In addition, the range of structures and programmes offered at the College provide students with the individual attention they deserve.

The thinking behind the College decision to cap enrolment numbers, which translates to approximately 500 students on each campus, is to ensure each student is well known to staff; that their talents, interests and challenges are recognised.

In such an environment, students feel well supported and are more comfortable to bring forward their challenges and, hopefully, are far more optimistic about their future beyond school.

As we enter the colder months of the year, many of our pets will be starting to feel a little bit stiffer than usual, most likely due to osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis is a disease that affects both cats and dogs of all age groups, but generally is seen in our older pets. Osteoarthritis in our pets is the same disease that affects humans, whereby there is a progressive deterioration of the joint cartilage which is usually the result of ongoing wear and tear, injury and joint instability.

Joints most commonly affected include elbows, hips, shoulders, knees and lower spine regions. Over time, the cartilage covering the ends of the bones within the joints is worn away, exposing nerve endings and creating pain, the joint fluid becomes very watery and so doesn’t provide adequate lubrication and inflammation results within the joint.

In severe cases, the body will start to grow new bone in a bid to create better joint stability, but this can lead to decreased range of motion within the joint or even fractured pieces of new bone floating within the joint.

Pets more at risk of developing osteoarthritis include elderly pets, larger breeds predisposed to hip dysplasia, overweight animals and those that have suffered a joint injury in the past, especially those resulting in joint surgery.

Being able to tell if your pet has osteoarthritis can be tricky, and an examination by a veterinarian is a good place to start. Often, diagnosis requires x-rays of the affected joints. The most common signs of osteoarthritis include pain or stiffness when rising or sitting, inability to climb stairs or jump on/off things, unwilling to go for walks, unwilling to play and run around and, in some cases, limping.

These days there are lots of things we can do for animals with osteoarthritis. The simplest thing includes weight loss and a warm sheltered bed raised up off the ground. The next is addition of oral joint protection supplements to pet’s diet. These supplements contain glucosamine, chondroitin, fish oils and green lip mussel.

If the arthritis is more advanced, ‘arthritis’ injections can be administered by a veterinarian. They increase joint fluid production and decrease the rate of cartilage destruction and this provides pain relief and increases mobility of the joints.

In more severe cases, and at cooler times in the year, your pet might also require more substantial pain relief in the form of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) or an opioid.

The latest treatment option is stem cell therapy.

It uses dogs own stem cells which are then injected into the affected joints to rebuild cartilage, helping to improve quality of life.

Supportive therapies such as physio and acupuncture can also be used alongside the medical therapies to relive discomfort.

Mosquitoes Council adopted the 2014-2019 Mosquito Management Plan in April 2014. This lays the foundation for minimising the mosquito population over the next five years. Mosquitoes are a declared pest under the Public Health Act 2005 and a potential health threat to the community as they carry diseases such as Dengue fever, Ross River virus, Barmah Forest virus and dog heartworm to name a few. Control of this pest is a matter for the whole community and residents should take the following simple actions to reduce mosquito breeding sites around the home: empty and/or dispose of all of your containers, clean gutters and ensure your water tank screens are in good order. Some common mosquito breeding places found in yards which may contain water include buckets, pot plant trays, bird baths, old tyres, bromeliads and unscreened water tanks. Council may issue an on-the-spot fine of $1100 for an individual or $2200 for a corporation if building work is undertaken outside these hours.

Abandoned Trolleys By 1 July 2014, all supermarkets and other retailers with more than 20 trolleys will be required to install an automatic wheel lock system. The mechanism is triggered by a buried electronic wire detector at all street exits. It automatically locks one of the trolley’s wheels if it is taken outside the shopping centre precinct. It is a win-win for the community, retailers and residents.

Camira Friends and Neighbours monthly update

On the first Wednesday of the month, 2nd April, we welcomed guest speaker Kirsty Thomas from The Caxton Legal Centre as our guest speaker.

She was very interesting as she explained about Seniors Legal and Support Service in depth. Thank you Kirsty.

On Friday 4th April we had our Cafe Night, where the theme was Italian. We enjoyed lovely food and also entertainer Bill Anderson played great music which had plenty of us up dancing, resulting in a fun night.

Wednesday 9th April was a games day and some of the members played indoor bowls. Table games were also enjoyed and were followed by morning tea.

Our Easter Bonnet Parade was on April 16th and what a parade it was! There were so many lovely hats that it was hard to choose which was the best. Lyn won the best hat and we also had a visit from Bede the Bunny and Jan the Chook giving out Easter Eggs.

April 23rd was Wine and Gossip followed by a Sausage Sizzle, and Wednesday 30th April we all enjoyed our Bus Trip to Redcliffe for the day.

April was a good month and our weather at the moment is beautiful - what a wonderful place we live in.

The Royals have returned to the Mother Country and Easter and Anzac Day are already behind us, so the year is marching on. Can you believe we have already booked the venue for our Christmas party?

In May, our secretary, Vic Wise, presented a fascinating insight into his post-war service in the air force with a presentation entitled ‘Eight Days to Singapore’.

Our speaker for June will be ex British bobby Colin Dodd, who will present a talk on life in the British Police Force when bicycles, whistles and heavy truncheons were the tools of the trade.

The picture above shows some of us with a feathered friend at our April outing to historic Wolston House. Our excursion in May was to QPAC in Brisbane for a backstage tour of the facility followed by lunch at the Plough Inn. The tour was most informative and gave us a clear insight into the behind-the-scenes workings of a world-class professional theatre.

Travelling by train using our go-cards made this outing an inexpensive one.

Our outing for June will be to the ‘Destiny’ Boonah Donkey Farm on Tuesday, 24 June. We have booked a bus and morning tea is included in the tour price. Lunch afterwards is at own cost at the Commercial Hotel in Boonah at pub lunch prices.

This month’s coffee morning was on Friday 16th May and this month’s regular lunch at Spring Lake Hotel will be on Tuesday 20 May. All members are welcome at all activities and potential members are encouraged to contact Vic on the number below for details. There is no charge for your first meeting and you are under no obligation to join.

Coaching For Life

It might sound like a funny question, but how often do you stop and think about your thinking? Do you notice the common words you use in conversation, or the phrases you use in your own quiet thoughtful moments? If you had to take each sentence and stack them into columns labelled “good” or “bad”, or maybe “positive” or “negative”, which column would be the longest? How often do you have thoughts about yourself that you would never say out loud to another person?

For most of us, those repetitive loops of negative thinking are at the heart of many disappointments, failures, losses and missed opportunities. And they are so automatic that few people take the time to stop and pay attention to thinking habits that are not much good for us.

For example, when surprising opportunities come our way, how often do we assume it’s only due to luck rather than the result of hard work? How much time do we spend worrying about things we can’t change or haven’t even happened, rather than carefully planning a response to something we can change? When do we take the time to savour the little things that have made our day worthwhile or resulted in success, plan a special surprise to make someone else happy, or reminisce about one of life’s precious moments?

It’s well established that negative thinking breeds negative emotions, and typically brings about negative actions. Many therapies focus on “retraining” behaviour patterns by getting us to change the way we act and then rewarding ourselves.

Some therapies get us to pay attention only to good feelings, as if having bad feelings is a problem. In fact, bad feelings are as much a part of being healthy as good feelings, the critical thing being how we think about bad feelings.

For example, if I feel guilty, a common bad feeling, some therapies would say this is “irrational” and suggest that I focus my attention onto something that instantly makes me feel good (like the ice-cream I’ll have after dinner). However, by noticing that I feel guilty and then giving this some thought, I might well come to understand the triggers of this nasty emotion better, and then plan specific actions I could take to avoid having that feeling again. For example, I might conclude that I feel guilty because I have been neglectful of my special relationships, and then decide to make the extra effort to repair these relationships. On top of that, I might discover that I’m not really feeling guilty due to being a hopeless or selfish person, but that it was important for me prioritise other things for awhile.

So take the time to do something that we believe is a uniquely human ability – think about your own thoughts - are they encouraging, self-respectful, sensible, and most of all, good for you?
