Huge crowd for Springfield Central ADF memorial dedication and ANZAC service at Robelle Domain Cr David Morrison said approximately 3, 500 people attended the ANZAC service at Robelle Domain to pay tribute to all who have served and are serving in the ADF and the NZDF. The service was simple yet sincere with people able to lay wreaths and place poppies in the new Springfield Central ADF Memorial at Robelle Domain. The memorial had a separate and special Dedication Ceremony on Saturday 16 April in preparation for the ANZAC service.

Cr David Morrison said the feedback was very positive with the main suggestion for next year is that what is happening on the stage be projected on the large LED screen. This feedback has been noted and will be implemented at next years service.

Hands up if you’re an organised person. Our youngest daughter, at 12 years old, is highly organised and it’s not really through any intention on our part! It seems to just be in her nature to love order. For example, some of the things she really wanted to do over the recent school holidays were to sort out and organise the cutlery and utensils drawers, the tupperware drawer and her wardrobe. And I didn’t stop her!

She’s not just organised with things but with her homework, her assignments and her craft paraphernalia (NB organised does not always mean tidy!). Her school bag is packed and ready before she goes to sleep and she prefers her uniform to be ironed the night before - I’m not as obsessed, um, I mean, organised, as she is, so this rarely happens. And to combat the incessant nagging from her to do it, I simply taught her how to iron it herself!

Now, these are all good habits and while I agree it’s great to be organised, it becomes a problem when it overflows to the rest of her life. It can mean that she wants everyone else and everything else to be as ordered as she is. We are frequently trying to teach her the art of ‘going with the flow’ and suggesting strategies for dealing with the fact that friends and classmates (don’t even talk to me about ‘group work’!), and even some teachers, don’t have the same level of organisation as she does.

You see, it’s that old saying - too much of a good thing.

Her desire to be organised could easily become something on which she is dependent. And this in turn can become a disadvantage in life because, as we all know, all sorts of personalities make up our world and we need to do our level best to get along with all of them.

Once again, we find that balance is the key to so many things in life. So many of our desires in life are not a problem in and of themselves, it’s the excess of that desire that becomes an issue. It is right for us to eat but when the desire for food goes beyond what our body needs, we have a problem. It is right for us to want money; how else can we pay bills and responsibly care for ourselves and our family? But when we centre our whole lives around trying to get more and more money, we lose sight of why we need money in the first place. It’s good and important to have down time, to relax and stop and smell the roses but, do that too often and for too long and we can easily slip into laziness and apathy. Not being an organised person is fine yet when we allow our lives or homes to become so messy and disorganised that we are constantly forgetting things and running late all the time, we become stressed and anxious.

What areas of your life do you need to fi nd some balance in? Maybe you need to have a big sort out and organise some cupboards or maybe you need to let the kids make a mess and not rush to have it orderly again.

Whatever it might be, creating balance only ever brings us more peace and harmony. And who doesn’t want that?

Blood testing your pet is very similar, if not the same, to when you visit your doctor or pathologist. With the use of both in-house laboratories and external laboratories, vets are able to provide very accurate and timely information about the health of their patients. This is particularly important because, unlike a human patient, our patients are not able to tell us where they have aches and pains and some pets instinctively hide illness.

Blood tests are therefore very important in assisting veterinarians in diagnosing problems and illnesses that cannot be picked up by a physical examination. They are used to identify diseases common to a specific breed.

They are useful for monitoring the effects of certain drug therapies. They are used prior to anaesthetics to identify problems that could arise and to adjust medications used for a procedure. They look at the function of the body’s organs, the immune system and the activity of a disease process. Some tests can be used to stimulate or suppress an organ to look into its function more specifically. Some newer tests have the ability to look at your pet’s genetics for specific disease or infections.

Blood tests help your vet identify problems that can often be fixed or managed before they do more harm to your pet. This is very relevant as your pet ages.

Depending on age and what is wrong with your pet, the frequency of blood tests can vary. It is recommended that blood tests be performed routinely prior to anaesthetics, especially if a problem is suspected. As pets do age much faster than humans (nearly seven years for every one of ours), a yearly or twice yearly screen for any new developing conditions is highly recommended.

Blood tests are a simple procedure that can be carried out quickly, often during a consultation. Your veterinarian will most often clip a small amount of hair from your pets leg or neck and alcoholic swabs are used to clean the area. A small amount of blood is collected from one of these areas, placed into special tubes and processed either in the clinic or sent to a laboratory. A bandaid may be placed on the leg to stop bruising. Most pets do not seem to feel these needle sticks like we do and before they know it, it’s all over.

WCC has been serving the community of the Greater Springfield region for nearly 20 years in cooperation with many businesses, organisations and the Ipswich City Council. Through the generosity of table sponsors and guests on the night funds raised on the night will sow financial seeds into the following areas: • The CAP (Christians Against Poverty) Debt Centre rescues families from debt, and educates to empower families to budget and manage their finances effectively.

Springfield CAP Centre was launched from the funds raised by last year’s SEEDS Dinner and was judged Best New CAP Centre in Australia. • Relief for struggling families – food vouchers, back to school assistance, rent assistance and counselling services. • Domestic Violence Program Initiative – WCC estimates that as many as 20 families it assists each week have experienced, or are experiencing, domestic violence.

Our goal is to provide more long term assistance, wraparound support and training to families and domestic violence victims.

The SEEDS Annual Dinner is a significant provider of funds for these and future critical initiatives in the Greater Springfield region. Friday 29 April was another historic day for the Greater Springfield Development when Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk turned the first sod for the World Class Aveo Senior Living Precinct at Springfield Central.

The $1 Billion development will eventually have 2500 apartments along with a range of on-site facilities for those living in the precinct.

The first 66 apartments are planned to be completed by mid-2017.

Motorama City Holden Family Funday another roaring success The Motorama City Holden Family Funday was held on a picture perfect April day at Robelle Domain, organised by a dedicated group of community volunteers led by Westside Community Care’s new event manager Jazz Morrison.

Featuring the Watoto Children’s Choir from Uganda, 23 dance groups from local schools/dance schools performed various presentations. There were gold coin fun rides, yummy food, giveaways, the new big screen and fireworks. The huge crowd enjoyed a night of free quality entertainment, a positive message and plenty of great memories.

The champions of the Dance UP were Junior: 1. Nia Savas (Prestige Dance) 2. Sophie Sabelis 3. Southern Academy of Dance (Group C - Pretty Young Thing) Senior: 1. FAD Ipswich 2. Mill Street Studios (Never Saw Blue) 3. Keely McPherson Southern Academy of Dance Highly Commended: Springfield Central State High (combined dance teams) The night raised $9000 for Watoto Choir, Westside Community Care and local Chaplaincy services as well as a number of families signing up to sponsor Watoto orphans.

The College is in the process of redirecting its marketing slant to ensure members of the wider community have accuracy around enrolment opportunities at the College. The ‘Join us on the journey’ campaign signals there are places available in several year groups. While the two main entrance points for enrolment are Kindergarten and Year Seven, both of which are well subscribed for 2017, parents do relocate during the year for a range of reasons, and places do become available across the year levels.

As an independent school the College does have considerable discretion and this is particularly important in relation to school size, which in many ways positively impacts on a range of other attributes. The College has a current enrolment of 950 students from Kindergarten to Year Twelve across the two campuses.

Student success is heavily dependent on the quality of the learning environment. At the College we work very hard, and I believe we are very successful, in creating a safe, positive and very supportive environment in which students are able to fully engage in their learning without unnecessary impediments.

The College’s holistic approach to education provides great scope for students of all levels of academic ability and interests to develop their skills and understandings. For talented sports men and women, dancers and musicians, students study fewer subjects than their peers to create time within the school day for homework and assignments and in doing so creates more time outside of school hours for these students to pursue their dreams.

Across both campuses the College has invested heavily in the quality of the learning experiences. On the Secondary Campus, as one example, the Design and Technology Department provides students with an array of dynamic and high quality learning experiences such as access to laser cutters and 3D printers.

Throughout each term the College seeks to challenge students through exposure to a range of expertise from beyond the College.

Last week, for example, the College hosted a number of highly qualified professionals in the areas of music, dance and drama to work with students. In sport the College engages a number of highly qualified coaches to coach College teams as they participate in Saturday sport against other independent schools.

Add in a range of excursions and trips such as the New Zealand Ski trip in the June, July holidays there is a great deal on offer at The Springfield Anglican College for students to experience and benefit from as they journey through their schooling.

Thank you to everyone in the community who supported our Knitting for the Homeless Project. It has been an overwhelming success, thanks to everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s generosity. We are now going to give them out to our local community within the Ipswich region. I have many contacts as unfortunately homelessness is a huge problem.

We recently gave a donation to Helenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Haven, a homeless shelter in Mills Street, Goodna, to purchase a shower. Our next project with them is lockers then doing some paving.

Our next Bunnings BBQ is on June 12, so come along and enjoy a sausage or two.

We raffle meat trays every Friday night at the Spring Lake Hotel. This is a major fundraiser for the club, so keep an eye out for us and you are very welcome to join us for a drink afterwards.

Lions is a fantastic way to make friends while helping in your community. Our dinner meetings are the second Tuesday of the month at 6.30pm at the Springfield Tavern and the cost is only what you want to spend from the menu. Everyone is welcome to join us.

BY THE MAYOR - PAUL PISASALE Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all happening in Springfield! Stage 2 of Orion Springfield Central was officially launched on Friday, 29 April. The new stores started opening before Christmas, anchored by Coles, Target, JB Hi-Fi and the very impressive Event Cinemas complex, but it was all made official when Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk came to town to cut the ribbon. It was great to have a long-time supporter of Ipswich back in the city. Ms Palaszczuk also helped me signal the start of the Aveo Group retirement living development at Springfield Central Boulevard. The ceremonial sod turning was the first step in what is sure to be an innovative and exciting investment in the region.

The annual Ipswich Show once again attracted great crowds from 13 to 15 May. Congratulations to the organisers, volunteers, sponsors and supporters involved and thanks to the community for filling the Ipswich Showgrounds for three wonderful days and nights. It feels like we have been celebrating for weeks with the Ipswich Festival and Show leading into the 150th running of the Ipswich Cup. It was amazing to see 3,000 people gathered at Springfield Central for the ANZAC Day dawn service. Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first digital defence memorial was at the centre of the service and people of all ages placed poppies at the site to pay tribute to the men and women who continue to represent our country abroad. Part of The Circle at Robelle Domain, the $130,000 memorial was funded through Ipswich City Council, the Federal Government and community donations. It is colloquially known as the Springfield Central Light Tower and is truly a community memorial to be proud of.

Although many shops in Stage 2 of Orion Springfield Central have been officially trading for months, the $154 million second stage was officially opened on 29 April.

Springfield Yarners weave their magic

With winter just around the corner, why not pick up a pair of knitting needles and join the Springfield Yarners to help make blankets for people in need.

Club coordinator and University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Senior Lecturer (Education) Dr Nicole Ann Todd said the group had been warming the hearts of others for 10 years.

“We have handed over more than 400 hand-knitted and crocheted blankets to charity groups since the group started,” Dr Todd said.

“This year we have decided to have the Domestic Violence Action Centre in Ipswich donate the blankets to a local women’s shelter and a youth homeless service.

“Small gestures like a blanket can make a big difference to the lives of vulnerable women and children experiencing difficult times. It is our way to pass on the comfort and love to those who need it and let them know there are people out there thinking of them.”

Dr Todd said being a part of the group was rewarding.

“A small group of knitters come to the Springfield campus each month to knit, however, the majority of blankets are made up of strips sent in from knitters in the community,” she said.

“I’m amazed at the amount of people who spend countless hours of their own time doing something for someone they have never met before.

“We plan to hand over the blankets to the Domestic Violence Action Centre in June or July, but we accept strips after that time – ready for next year’s handover.”

The Springfield Yarners meet the third Monday of every month at 1pm at the 6th floor staffroom at USQ Springfield.

New knitters are welcome to join the group and there are plenty of willing hands to teach those who have never picked up a set of knitting needles.

“Most of the ladies do it because they care and want to help others, but knitting is also a great social activity and a good way to learn a new skill,” Dr Todd said.

The group accepts 1.5m knitted strips and completed blankets all year round. Just drop them into USQ Springfield’s reception in Building A. Instructions: Using 8ply acrylic yarn and 4mm needles, cast on 45 stitches. Knit every row (garter stitch) until the strip measures 1.5m in length. Any colour is fine. Strips can be one colour or multiple colours. The group uses six strips to make one blanket and is happy to receive any number of strips which they sew together to make completed blankets.

Kiwanis Club of Brisbane President, Mrs Bev Lancaster believes there has been change. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This has been reflected in a 25% increase in our club membership over the past six months, a second Kiwanis Club in Queensland being chartered at Pacific Pines on the Gold Coast in May and an overall increase in membership in Kiwanis Clubs throughout the Australia District,â&#x20AC;? she said.

At the Brisbane Club Annual General Meeting held in March, a new Board was elected with many new members taking office who will manage the club affairs from October 2016. Understanding giftedness For Brentwood Forest residents, Grahame and Nicole, parenting a child with exceptional IQ has highs and lows, with many challenges presented along the way.

Louie, who is six years old and a student at West Moreton Anglican College, was recently accepted into Mensa; a proud recognition for him and his parent’s after repeated misdiagnoses of his giftedness at a different school.

“Louie’s prep year was very difficult but at WestMac Louie has no issues at all,” said Nicole. “He feels challenged and engaged, and we really love the school and the supportive environment there. We are especially grateful that he has the opportunity to learn instruments and foreign languages, which is a special interest of Louie’s.”

“Louie was tested by a psychologist as part of our ‘investigation’ into what was causing him to experience behavioural issues in the Prep classroom. This came after spending months taking him from one specialist to another and having him misdiagnosed with high-functioning autism at first.

“He was also diagnosed with anxiety and sensory processing difficulties which are not unusual for gifted children. Aside from test results revealing Louie is in the 98th percentile, he’s a ‘normal’ child who loves Lego and playing with his brother and pets and ‘making things’ – he’s very creative and loves designing and constructing things like cars or ‘pet houses’.”

“For me the real story is that ‘giftedness’ can cause behavioural issues in the classroom if it is not dealt with appropriately, and that these children are often typecast as troublemakers or ‘bad kids’ when really they just need to be understood, challenged and engaged.

“I would encourage parents who are encountering similar difficulties to explore this avenue and find the school that’s right for them and understands the needs of gifted kids. After all, ‘gifted’ children are facing the same problems as children with learning difficulties and also require special assistance in the classroom. It is often assumed that these kids have an advantage and ‘will be alright’ and don’t need special assistance just because they’re bright, but that’s not always the case, as most seem to experience problems of some sort.

“I feel there’s a lack of understanding of the issues ‘gifted kids’ face among parents and even teachers, and I hope success stories like Louie’s will make a difference to someone, even if it’s just one kid,” said Nicole.

When I was asked to write an article about the importance of creativity and art in my relationship with my daughter, my first thought was, I can’t write an article, I’m a mixed media artist not a writer, and the feelings of not being good enough set it. I was about to write back and say ‘Thanks for asking but I don’t think I can do it’. Before I did though, I decided to tell my eight year old daughter what I had been asked to do. Her immediate reaction was “Can I write some to?” and she said it with such excitement that I said “Yes, of course you can.” That right there, for me, is one of the key things about sharing creativity and art with my daughter. She made me question myself and as you can see I decided to give it a go. I may not write this article perfectly but I am having a good go at it and that shows her that even if it’s not perfect at least I tried.

I always want to be a good role model and show her that you can do anything you want and not to let fear stop you from doing things. We have both grown so much because of our shared love of art and being creative in what we do. We encourage each other to try new things all the time and usually find that it wasn’t as hard as we first thought and with practice things get easier and we get better at them.

We both love attending the monthly Creative heART meetings as it’s a great opportunity to meet up with others who are creative and see and hear what they have been up to plus test out some new products when our meeting is held at the Springfield University Campus.

We are lucky to have a room in our home which is dedicated to getting crafty, arty and creative. It was very important to me to have a space where everything was already set up and we didn’t have to pack things away every day. This means that some mornings when I get up for work at 6 am or even on the weekends I wake to find my daughter in the craft room doing something. We always have time together in the craft room as well and it’s great to bounce creative ideas of each other.

I spend a lot of nights in there doing my art work as I find I need to be doing some kind of art every day to keep me balanced, especially with life being so hectic these days.

Recently, I picked up some wooden signs in the clearance bin at a local cheap shop and decided to use them in our art. We had one each and chose to paint a unicorn on them. My daughter was super quick with hers and I absolutely love her Unicorn. Mine took me awhile as I had never done anything like it before and felt I needed to try and make it more realistic.

I admit that there were times with it when I wanted to bin it but I just put it aside till I felt like tackling it again. It actually ended up taking me a few months to finish but I’m pretty happy with the end result.

When it comes to being creative, it’s not just about what we create art-wise, it’s also being creative and thinking outside the box in other areas of our lives. It helps to keep the imagination alive, take chances, see things from a different perspective and ask questions.

Giving a child the space to be who they are, to believe in themselves, and bring joy to their lives and let them know that they can make anything happen, is most important. Kids are our future and they need to know that there are no limits in life, no matter what their circumstances.

My daughter knows that when she grows up she can be or do whatever she wants, whether that be an artist, a writer, a vet or a teacher. She can be all those things and more.

As Audrey Hepburn once said “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says I’m possible!”

Welcome to National Seniors Goodna Redbank branch’s May update. Finally it seems we will now have cooler weather as autumn kicks in and I hope all mothers out there had a wonderful Mother’s Day. The speaker for our last branch meeting, Richard Edwards from the Heart Foundation, reminded us of the value of a healthy lifestyle leading to good cardiovascular health as well as improved brain function and a lessened risk of dementia.

Current arrangements for our speaker in May are still in place however if there is any change another activity will be organised.

Just to get a month ahead to Tuesday 21 June we will have a speaker from Ipswich Seniors Net. The technical age is upon us and there are still many seniors who do not own a computer or understand how to use one; here is your chance to gain a greater understanding.

Early in May we joined up with the Ipswich National Seniors for an interesting tour of the Lockyer, finishing up for lunch at the Tarampa Pub. The June bus trip will be Monday the 13th June, and will be advertised at our next branch meeting in May. Club members meet socially on the first Wednesday of each month at 9.30am for coffee and cake. In June, members will meet at the Shingle Inn, Mt. Ommaney Shopping Centre, and afterwards there will be time for a spot of retail therapy.

National Seniors Goodna Redbank Branch meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the Goodna Leagues Club, Brisbane Terrace, Goodna. We charge a small fee for morning tea and visitors are most welcome, for further information about meetings and activities please contact Val Randle, Branch secretary on 3297 5735.

Local VIEW Club by Robyne Apps interest gains momentum The Greater Springfield VIEW Club Development is gathering pace and the April Information Sessions created a lot of interest in the community.

Welcome to the monthly column of the combined Probus Club of Goodna-Springfield Inc. Incoming committee members are settling into their new roles within the Club and the new Probus year got off to a flying start with guest speaker Paul Pisasale, the Mayor of Ipswich. As well as being impressed by the scope of the plans that are in the pipeline for the area, we were treated to many interesting and entertaining ‘behind the scenes’ snippets relating to what actually goes on in local government, and the hard work and dedication required to make our local area so safe and vibrant.

Future guest speakers include an Ambassador for Assistance Dogs Australia, one of our Club members who trains Service Dogs, Patrick Pickett, CEO of The Queensland Pops Orchestra, and Kathleen Noonan, a well known Brisbane journalist.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Probus in Australia, the Club held a ‘Posh Picnic’ at Wolston Historic House. The theme was good old fashioned glamour and Club members really got into the spirit of the things with bling, feathers and bow-ties galore (see photo above). Good food, good company and a delightful setting made it a memorable day.

For our next outing we are visiting Boggo Road Gaol; we were lucky enough to secure one of the last tours available before the site is closed for redevelopment.

Club members meet for regular monthly coffee mornings and lunch dates, so there is usually something to fit everyone’s diary.

If you would like to discover firsthand what a Probus Club is all about, do come along to a meeting – you will be made most welcome. Please ring Penny on 3818 7981 for further information. There is no charge for your first meeting and, of course, you are under no obligation to join.

Two of my daughters have entered the ‘tweenie’ stage; not quite teenagers but no longer little kids either. One of the things that has struck me as I have looked at the advertising and media targeted at this age group (and, indeed, younger ages as well) is the amount of sexualisation of young girls. As my girls are getting older, this issue is being brought into stark relief for me and I am becoming more and more concerned about the consequences of this trend for young girls in our community, in my Church and (at a really personal level) for my own young daughters.

This was brought home to me when my then 5-year-old daughter came home from school one day upset. When I asked her why she was upset, she said, “Because my bum is bad – it’s too big.” I couldn’t believe my ears! How does a 5-year-old pick up such ridiculous messages?

Of course, the consequences go much further than low self-esteem. As many people are discovering in their own families, when young people (not just girls) become obsessed with body image, this can lead to health problems, mental illness, disastrous relationships, and worse. Now is a critical time for parents and families to instil healthy body image because the increase in social media, the ridiculously poor restrictions on advertising and other factors that are beyond our control, will not do the job for us.

As a parent, when I look at my girls, I want them to judge their value not by their appearance but by their intrinsic worth. To me, this only comes from an absolute conviction in human dignity. Our value ultimately comes from the value God has put on humanity. As the famous Psalm says, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:14) This is true of every human being. Once we deny the absolute value of human dignity, we are on a slippery slope because we will seek our value in other things, like image, popularity, success or money.

While not everyone who reads this column will share my faith position, I think we will all agree that we must teach our kids that their self-image must not be left to the whim of popular culture. We must give them something more permanent, more absolute.

It starts with a conversation, with observing and discussing how our kids are presenting themselves and how we present ourselves. It starts with affirming their beauty beyond the stereotype. It also means having the difficult conversation when we are confronted by negative advertising or images in the media. It means teaching our kids that they are worth more than the tawdry consumerism and conformity that popular culture demands.

Instilling healthy self-esteem in a young person can set them up for a fulfilling life and one that makes a positive difference in our world. It starts with you making that first step. God bless you as you do!

I thank the people of Division 2 for my re-election on March 19. It is a privilege to continue to serve the community in the expanding suburbs of Augustine Heights, Bellbird Park, Gailes, Goodna and Redbank. At the first Council meeting, I was elected Deputy Mayor for the next four years, working with Mayor Paul Pisasale as Ipswich approaches a major milestone in 2017 when our population hits 200,000.

Development Updates Augustine Heights The local shopping precinct on the corner of Augusta Parkway and Leon Capra Drive is nearing completion. The developer is planning to include a variety of food and other commercial outlets.

The Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints on the opposite corner of Augusta Parkway and Leon Capra Drive is well underway and due for completion this year. It is the largest church ever built in Ipswich.

Springfield Central Aveo Springfield is situated on Wellness Way Springfield Central. The total area is 10.7 hectares and development of this site will be staged. Official turning of the sod by the Premier Anastacia Palaszczuk occurred on Friday 29 April 2016. Once completed, the site will have Australia’s first dementia friendly aged care and independent seniors’ village in Springfield Central’s Health City precinct. This project is a planned and integrated village of over 2500 dwellings for seniors.

Springfield Christian Family church celebrates 20 years Local residents and community members are invited to attend the Springfield Christian Family’s celebration of their 20th birthday with a special service to mark the occasion on Sunday morning May 22 at Woodcrest State College at 9.15am for a 9.30am start.

Springfield Christian Family had its first service on Sunday May 26, 1996 and in the following 20 years has grown into four congregations that meet with around 500 members across Greater Springfield. Over 2000 people each week are impacted through the churches members participating in school Religious Instruction, Westside Community Care welfare, and other programs.

Ps John Van Bennekom said, “We have not done this on our own but the provision and grace of God and the amazing support of our community, key volunteers, government reps, council, developers and local businesses, school administrations and praying friends.

Ps Phil Cutcliffe said “On our birthday we want to say thank you to all of our community and celebrate with great music and singing, stories from the past, a great fun program for the children, food, fellowship, special gifts, surprises. There will be inspirational guest speaker Ps John Lewis who was the State Leader of Australian Christian Churches at the time we first pioneered the church with about six other adults and a tribe of kids, 20 years ago.

John Nugent Way USQ officially opened in August 2006 and Orion Springfield Central opened in March 2007. Council had required that a pedestrian link from Orion Springfield Central to and from USQ be established. The pedestrian link required a significant bridge to be constructed over Mountain Creek.

In July 2007 the bridge and walkway were officially opened and named John Nugent Way. John Nugent was the Mayor of Moreton Shire Council when Springfield Land Corporation commenced their vision and was also the first Mayor of the current Ipswich when Moreton Shire and Ipswich City amalgamated in 1995.

John Nugent Way is now a significant walkway that thousands of people use each week and will only become busier as Springfield Central matures into a complete Town Centre.

We also celebrated Pat’s 80th birthday - what a milestone!

We had a Beetle Drive on 13 April, followed by morning tea. Then it was our Hoy morning which was held on 20 April with prizes to be won.

There was our bus trip to the Australian Light Horse Museum at Mudgeeraba on 27 April. The museum is the headquarters of the Mudgeeraba Troop 14th Australian Light Horse Regiment. Historically, the Troop has been involved with local and regional agricultural shows, ANZAC Day parades as well as providing demonstrations of their award and winning skill at arms and tent pegging.

It was a very interesting morning. We then went to the Wallaby Hotel for lunch and ended the day with a stop at the Chocolate Factory at Beenleigh.
