School holidays are the perfect time to reconnect with your kids and spend some quality time together as a family. What better way to escape the everyday routine than hopping on a plane and landing in some exotic destination? From beach breaks in Queensland and cruises close to home to exciting adventures in exotic locales, like Vietnam and Mexico, there are school holiday options to suit every family and budget. It’s always worth planning ahead and booking well in advance. It will not only save you money and ensure that the holiday of your dreams has not sold out, it will also mean you’re more likely to find seats together on the plane. Perhaps the best thing about booking early is that it gives the whole family something to look forward to. It will make the last term of school fly by and give you plenty of time to research the fun stuff, like the best beaches, restaurants and attractions to visit while on holiday. When choosing where to go, it can be fun to stick with a tried and tested favourite, but it is also exciting to break with tradition and try somewhere new. Ask yourself where in the world you would most like to go and what you would most like your kids to see and experience. Cruising holidays offer amazing value for money as your transport, accommodation and meal costs are all included in the price. And there is just so much for everyone to do, with rock climbing walls, mini-golf, video arcades and outdoor cinemas. There are free kids clubs too, which gives you plenty of time for some welldeserved relaxation. If venturing further afield, joining a family-oriented tour is a great option. You can rest assured knowing that you will visit all the must-see sights, with all your accommodation and transport taken care of – its completely hassle-free! Plus your tour guide’s amazing insights into the area will add to the overall experience. Simply come and see us at Escape Travel Brookwater to put together your ultimate family holiday, located at Shop T7 Brookwater Village and we will work with you to plan the perfect holiday escape. If it is more convenient to do it over the phone, please call us direct on 1300 367 490. Personally Speaking

By Susannah Friis with Susannah Friis

Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you. ~ Carl Sandburg. Recently, our eldest child turned 23. Twenty. Three. Sometimes the passage of time reaches up and slaps you in the face, and this was one of those times! Graham and I sat and wondered where the time had gone, reminiscing about his childhood, feeling every inch the cliche, as we clucked our tongues about how it felt like only yesterday we were teaching him to ride a bike, urging him to eat his veggies and threatening him with loss of pocket money for not tidying up his room. I remember so well how I would roll my eyes, when he was just three or four years old, at those middle aged seniors who would gently admonish my complaining with words that it would all go by so fast. And now, here I am crying into my wine that he’s all grown up in the blink of an eye! Time is a slippery customer, isn’t it? Time can tick by in slow motion when we’re counting down to that long awaited holiday, only to speed up once it finally arrives. And the truth, as we know of course, is that it doesn’t change at all (yes, yes all you science-y folk, I know it does sometimes incrementally increase or decrease but it’s not like it’s noticeable!). It marches on, regardless of whether we want it to, or if we are ready to move with it. Yet, the maxim that instructs us to ‘make the most of it’ is somewhat vague and hard to pin down, don’t you think? What does it look like when we are ‘making the most of it’? How do we actively appreciate the moments as they go by? It’s not as if we can hold on to the moment any longer simply by appreciating it. For me, it’s all tied up with the other great ideal of living with no regrets. We feel we haven’t ‘made the most’ of a situation if we look back and wish we’d done it differently, wish we’d paid more attention or just enjoyed that moment. If we can look back on times in our life and know that we enjoyed it, that we were present in those moments ie that we ‘made the most’ of them, then we are unlikely to have regrets. And regrets are what make us feel like time has cheated us and moved too fast. It’s satisfying to look back on a time in your life and know that you squeezed every bit of fun and enjoyment out of it and truly savoured it. Knowing you ‘made the most of it’ certainly makes the passage of time a little easier to take. And as for us and our boy…well, who doesn’t have parenting regrets, especially with your first child? But, I think he turned out okay and if we failed to make the most of every second of his childhood, we’ll make up for it by making the most of watching him continue to grow into a man. As Carl Sandburg says in the quote, time is our coin. How are you spending yours?

Save with Jamie by Jamie Oliver

I haven’t met anyone who doesn’t love Jamie Oliver and all he stands for - great food which is fancy without being too tricky, health conscious without being ridiculous, and he likes to give others a hand up in life. Yep, he’s an all round good bloke. We’ve been tuning in to watch his latest TV offering, Save with Jamie and loving it, so when I was offered the book of the series to review, I jumped at it. Written in Jamie’s typical laid back manner, I literally sat down and read it cover to cover one afternoon, drooling over the recipes as I went, of course! As well as the 120 economical meals, the book provides tips on getting the most out of your freezer, how to organise your fridge and what should be in it, and of course, items no self respecting pantry should be without. A double page spread of shopping tips that will save you money completes the set before the recipes begin. Along with gorgeous photos, each recipe comes with a write up from Jamie and the ingredients and method set out in an easy to read and execute format. Save with Jamie is available at Dymocks for $49.99RRP, so why not see that outlay as an investment in saving money on the grocery bill with this thrifty cookbook!

The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith

I’m going to shock you all by telling you that I have never read JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series but it’s true! So when her latest offering of crime fiction came my way, I was a bit ho-hum about it. I’ll admit that the opening paragraphs didn’t grab me and I was a little under-whelmed given her writing credentials but on the whole, it’s a good crime story. Private investigator Cormoran Strike is a likeable, if not predictable, character, putting us at ease by way of a limp and less-than-Hollywood looks. A man in trouble, Strike grabs at the chance of making some decent money and thus begins his investigation into the death of international model Lula Landry. Rowling creates a character that leaves plenty of room for a sequel within a good story line, even if the writing is a little too laborious in parts. The Cuckoo’s Calling is available from Dymocks for $29.99RRP.

Burial Rites by Hannah Kent

I like to support fellow Aussie’s, so when the debut novel, Burial Rites, landed in my hands I was delighted to see that the author, Hannah Kent, is a 28 year old from Adelaide. While spending time in Iceland as a teenager, the author heard the tale of Agnes Magnusdottir and returned to Australia with a story brewing. Burial Rites is that story, and brings to life the true events surrounding the conviction of Agnes in 1829. Accused of murder, the story of Agnes unfolds as she works alongside a local family on their farm in the harsh and unforgiving landscape of Iceland in the 1800’s. With an execution date on the horizon, Agnes requests a young, inexperienced reverend, Toti, to give her Godly counsel during whatever time she has left. The reverend listens as the story of Agnes’ life is slowly revealed. Told with sensitivity and beautiful prose, Burial Rites is a masterful telling of life in the 1800’s in Iceland, of the society and the poignant real events of one woman. I loved this story. It will move you, cause you to question beliefs and will resonate with you long after the last page is turned. I thoroughly enjoyed reading and seeing life in the villages and farms in Iceland in years gone by, and gained, all over again, an appreciation of our modern way of life. This is an impressive debut novel from author Hannah Kent, and I’ll certainly be on the look out for her next novel. Burial Rites is available from Dymocks for $32.99RRP - perfect as a Christmas gift, or why not buy it for yourself!

Coaching For Life

with Dr Kate Lemerle PhD MAPS Dr Kate Lemerle has over 25 years experience in the health industry and is a Coaching Psychologist with Chrysalis Wellness Services

Most people know the importance of exercise and healthy eating for physical fitness. However, mental fitness gets very little press. Many myths still prevail about mental unwellness, or not coping – that it indicates weakness or worse still, madness; that it’s “deserved” because of something awful the person has done; or that it’s just a “chemical imbalance” and a pill will make it better. As a society we are not well equipped to build up our mental fitness so that when life delivers tough challenges, we’re ready and able to tackle them. Just as stretching, cardio and strength training are the foundations for physical fitness, there are also five crucial components of psychological fitness. Each is explained below with one simple exercise you can do to strengthen it. Mood management refers to the skill of managing your emotions – being able to down-regulate bad moods and upregulate good moods. Moods have a profound influence on how we cope with life - an anxious mood can cause us to be more prone to worry; an angry mood can cause us to be more easily offended and irritated; a hopeful mood can help us plan more interesting and meaningful activities; a curious mood can help us explore and learn new things. Daily exercise: Download a list of “positive emotions” from the internet, then every day, share a story or write about an experience you’ve had that activated one of the positive emotions on the list. Positivity mindset refers to the skill of refocusing your thinking towards finding solutions to challenges and staying mentally focused on the important end-goals. Not only are positive thinkers healthier and less stressed, cultivating affirmative thoughts and reducing negative self-talk strengthens your immune system, reduces blood pressure, and helps you sleep better. Daily exercise: Reflect every day on things that went well for you, the things you accomplished, and the delightful moments you’ve experienced. Personal strengths (also known as “signature strengths”) refer to our own unique set of coping resources or traits that provide the building blocks for many positive outcomes. For example, research shows that using signature strengths in a new way increases happiness and decreases depression for six months or more. Daily exercise: Set yourself the task of actively using at least three signature strengths in a different way every week. Flourishing relationships are the base for mental and emotional wellbeing. Recent advances in brain research have shown that the way we interact with other people and social experiences are vital for brain development and health functioning, in fact even modifying the expression of our genes. Daily exercise: Write a personal note of gratitude to someone who has contributed to your life in some way this week. Finding meaning and knowing your life purpose are essential for wellbeing and buffering against psychopathology. Having a sense of what the world is about and why we are here provides the motivation to set personal goals and strive to make our own little piece of the place better. It provides us with a sense of past, present and future, which can be energising. Daily exercise: Reflect on the three most significant contributions you’d like to leave the world, and consider actions you could take this week towards making sure these goals are achieved.

“ Your Chemist, Helping you” The Christmas Vouchers Appeal has been helping Westside Community Care provide support for struggling families for 16 years. With this appeal and other fundraisers, WCC raise funds to purchase food vouchers to the value of $50+ for struggling families to use during the Christmas period and throughout the new year. In the last year, WCC have distributed 450 sets of vouchers to families in need throughout the Greater Springfield, Carole Park, Gailes and Goodna Region. Due to the economic climate over the past few years, the number of families requiring this form assistance has grown and WCC are setting their goal at being able to help 500 families this year. “Along with this we also organise a Community Christmas Lunch on Christmas day for families which includes giving each family a hamper to take home,” said Ps Phil Cutcliffe of Westside Community Care. “This means we need to raise $20,000 of which we have already raised nearly $7,000. “We would love it if individuals and businesses could partner with us to help us raise the remaining $13,000.” There are many ways you and/or your business can be involved. Rotary Club of Greater Springfield Update Local club raises funds for health research by Chris Steinback

Australian Rotary Health is one of the largest independent health research funds in Australia, committed to helping everyday Australians, especially those who are least able, to help themselves. The research is used to make a real difference in the treatment and prevention of a number of common health problems. In short, the Australian Rotary Health supports you and your community towards better health through research, awareness and education. Three local Rotary Clubs, Greater Springfield, Rocks Riverside and Taylor Bridge have joined forces to help build a healthier future for the community by organising and conducting a very successful Spring Dance. Rotarians and friends put on their dancing shoes and favourite hat to dance the night away and raise much needed funds for research. While enjoying themselves on the dance floor,

Page 10 - November 2013 - The Greater Springfield Times

the participants also managed to raise over $5000 through silent auctions and raffles, these funds to be donated to the Australian Rotary Health. All three Rotary Clubs are new clubs and, though in their infancy, have the energy and enthusiasm to support you and the local community. All are looking to attract motivated people in the community who have a desire to join and help improve the wellbeing of local and international communities. What in the world does Rotary do? Besides support for the health research, Rotary is also helping to eradicate polio worldwide, provide disaster relief, improve literacy locally and globally, and they are doing so much more. It feels good to do some good like supporting health research while, in this case, having a good time at a Spring Dance. Once a week groups of people get together, leave their egos at the door and help others in the wider community. Its life changing. And we’re probably around the corner from your place. The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield (prov) holds its meetings every Thursday evening at 6.30pm at the Brookwater Golf and Country Club, 1 Tournament Drive Brookwater. For enquiries, contact Club Secretary Lachlan Clarke on 0409 711 199, visit us on Facebook or email us on greaterspringfieldrotary@hotmail.com.

Enquiries can be directed to the office on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 8.30am - 3pm or visit the website at: www.springfieldlakescc.org.au.

A message from the Mayor’s Desk BY THE MAYOR - PAUL PISASALE In case you haven’t been counting, it’s only six weeks until Christmas and it would be great to see residents supporting local businesses, especially our small business owners, who work passionately to deliver goods and services to their local community. Although gift giving is a part of the festive season, it is also a good time to spare a thought for those less fortunate and think about how you can offer help. Our entire city was shown immeasurable generosity from every day people from across the country when we were affected by natural disaster and it would be fantastic to see that generous spirit passed on. Sometimes just a small donation is all it takes to change the life of someone in need. There are so many charities that put in a tremendous effort around Christmas time helping those who may not be able to afford basic food, buy a gift for their children or even put a roof over their head. There are plenty of charities and organisations around Ipswich that you can donate to and a number of ways to offer help including The Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul Society, Ipswich Hospital Foundation, Starlight Foundation, The Smith Family and many others. The community directory on council’s website also lists a number of local organisations that offer a range of different services, from local churches, carers and fundraising groups. The greatest gift you can give this Christmas is one of charity. Great news for commuters, the Springfield rail line will be officially opening on December 2. The first Springfield line trains will depart the Springfield and Springfield Central stations on this day and you can find all the timetable information on Translink’s website www.translink.com.au.

Cancer Connect

Talk to someone who’s been there

Cancer Council Queensland is inviting people who have been affected by cancer to seek support from trained volunteers who have had a similar cancer experience.

The speaker for the month was Max Broad who spent four months in Papua New Guinea in a remote area. It was a very interesting talk. Friday night the 4th of October was our Cafe Night, where Greek food was available and the entertainer was once again Bill Anderson who plays some good music from the 50s and 60s. Everyone on the dance floor had a good time. We were shown how to dance to Zorba the Greek which some of us did very well including Betty and Diana. It got a bit too fast for some of us but Betty and Diana kept to the dance floor. Well done. Our bus trip for the month of October was to Twin Towns to see a show; a good day out which we all enjoyed. Our next bus trip is to Warwick this month. Members are looking forward to the busy months coming up as we are head towards the festive season. If you’re interested in joining the club, please ring Val on 3288 2689 or Pat on 3818 9343.

A tender was recently awarded by Ipswich City Council for the construction of the city’s newest bridge over Mountain Creek near Springfield Central Railway Station. Cragcorp Pty Ltd was the successful tenderer for the construction of the new bridge, which, at a cost of almost $3.3 million, is part of the Road 10 capital works project currently underway. Together with Springfield Land Corporation, council has been planning for the construction of the Springfield Town Centre (North) Precinct, which involves the delivery of Road 10 which joins Augusta Parkway opposite the Cunningham Highway exit road and finishes at Springfield-Greenbank Arterial Rd opposite the entrance to the Springfield College. The road is approximately 900m long and will provide necessary access to the future sports fields and the new Springfield Central Railway Station. Work on the bridge project is expected to begin this month and be completed, weather permitting, by early May 2014, with Road 10 due for completion late June 2014.

Advanced Beauty

with Thea Soons Advanced Skin Care Clinic

If you recall, my first article was all about the huge changes within the beauty industry. Well, I’m going to tell you about how the financial side has changed. Instead of spreading the cost of several services over a series of months, clients now demand that more and more services be combined in the one treatment. The upside of combining services is that it increases the results and longevity of the treatments – and the downside? Well, today there isn’t one! The introduction of our weekly payment plan alleviates financial strain. Many of our clients prefer this method. It enables them to have the treatments and services when they want, and as often as they want. Our $25.00 weekly payment plan is our most popular. This enables a client to have an average of $5,000 worth of treatments and products. Now, who would have thought some 20 years ago, well not even 20, let’s say five years ago, payment plans would be introduced into the beauty industry? Me for one! Well, enough of finance, we’re coming into the party season, so let me tell you what this season’s party essentials are: What’s hot... • Feet! Smooth heels along with manicured and painted toes, • For both men and women, white teeth and perfect nails, • And for women, great lips. What’s NOT hot... • For both men and women, face and body hair! • And for women, un-exfoliated skin. This season’s look is all about enhancing; making the most of your natural, physical attributes and we’re experts in this field! From perfect feet, to the all American smile, our treatments ensure all our swans leave with extra beauty, extra grace and oodles of confidence. And yes, we’re coming to that time of the year again! If you’re not sure what to buy your loved one, how about one of our gift vouchers? You don’t even have to leave your seat. Give us a call and we will mail it out to you. Now, how easy is that?!

Planning is underway for our Christmas party which will be held this year at the end of November in the Camira hall where we have our monthly meetings. This year, we have employed a paid entertainer but there will also no doubt be room on the program for those members who wish to share their talents! This month’s photo shows some of us after a pleasant lunch and catch-up at the Springfield Lakes Hotel in September. October’s outing was to Restaurant 66 at South Brisbane TAFE, again for an enjoyable lunch, and this event was voted a great success by all who attended. The use of public transport on this occasion was a practical way of keeping the cost down. Our principal outing for November will be our Christmas party as mentioned above. Also this month, on Saturday 16, we plan a City Cat cruise on the river, possibly from West End. Final details will be determined at the November meeting and will be available by the time this edition of the Springfield Times is circulated. Our November speaker was Andrew Alback from the Camira Fire Station who brought the whole crew and the fire appliance with him. The presentation made us all keenly aware of the fact that we live in an area where bushfires are a fact of life and it is impossible to be too wellprepared, especially after such a dry winter and spring. The crew joined us for afternoon tea and we enjoyed their company for coffee and conversation. There will be no Guest Speaker next month as we usually hold a wine and cheese function after our December meeting. All members are welcome at all activities and potential members are encouraged to contact Gaye on the number below for details. Finally, don’t forget our drop-in coffee mornings at Robelle Domain, Springfield Parklands, on the third Friday of each month. (This month’s date is 15th November). We would like to issue a cordial invitation to all retired and semi-retired local people to consider joining us. There is no charge for your first meeting and you are under no obligation to join. Interested? Your first step is to ring Gaye on 3818 8765 or join us at 1.30 pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Camira Friends and Neighbours Clubhouse in Bruce Lane (cnr Langley Road), Camira.

One of the signs which might suggest to you that something is not right with your pet is a change in the amount of water the pet is drinking or the amount of urine your dog or cat is producing. Excessive drinking is called polydipsia, and excessive urine production is called polyuria. Water intake depends on the type of food the pet is eating. Pets which are fed fresh or tinned diet will get most of their water requirements from their food, and usually will not be noticed to drink much at all. If they eat mainly dried foods, they will drink more. The amount of water dogs and cats drink is different for each pet but they will drink more in hot weather. The water balance in the body is largely controlled by the kidneys. Water taken in by mouth is absorbed from the intestine into the bloodstream. Fluid is filtered from the blood by one part of the kidneys (the glomeruli) and is re-absorbed into the blood from another part of the kidneys (the tubules). If a lot of fluid is re-absorbed, less urine is produced. If less fluid is re-absorbed, more urine is produced. Animals respond to loss of fluid from the body by drinking more to replace it. Therefore, anything that interferes with reabsorption of fluid by the kidneys will result in an increase in drinking by the pet. Many disease processes can affect kidney function. Obviously, primary kidney disease is one, although it has to be quite advanced before urine concentrating ability is lost. Kidney function is also affected by bacterial toxins, for example in urinary tract or reproductive tract infections, the presence of glucose (sugar) in the urine, as occurs in diabetes, and by certain other hormonal diseases such as overactive adrenal glands or thyroid glands, or deficiency of some pituitary gland hormones. The balance of calcium and electrolytes in the blood also affects kidney function, and these can be abnormal with some tumours, adrenal insufficiency and whipworm infections. Liver disease also affects kidney function. Occasionally, a dog or cat may drink excessively for purely psychological reasons, although this can really only be diagnosed by eliminating all the physical causes. As you can see, polydipsia and polyuria can indicate a wide range of disorders. If you notice these signs in your cat or dog, have a vet examine your pet, and if possible, bring a urine sample for analysis. Many of the conditions described can be managed effectively, and the earlier a diagnosis is made, the better it will be.

Don’t let your pet get into trouble as temperatures soar Summer is a fun time of year for families, but it can also be a dangerous season for pets. As the warm weather approaches, RSPCA Qld are urging pet owners to keep their beloved furry friends in the shade with plenty of water. As the temperature soars the RSPCA hotline 1300 ANIMAL receives an alarming number of calls about pets left in the hot sun. RSPCA Qld Spokesman Michael Beatty says, “If a dog is tethered, they can become tangled and be unable to reach their water or appropriate shelter. “We recommend that there are at least two to three containers of water in case one gets knocked over.” Every year the RSPCA call centre receive hundreds of calls about pets (primarily dogs) left alone in hot cars. “People simply have to be aware of the dangers,” said Mr Beatty. “If it’s thirty degrees outside, the temperature inside a car can potentially rise to well over forty degrees in less than five minutes.” RSPCA Senior Veterinarian Anne Chester also emphasises the severity of the paralysis tick and importance in prevention. “There are several prevention methods including washes, collars, sprays, spot-ons and tablets. The paralysis tick can act very quickly and can cause severe impairment or worse. It’s a killer,” she warns. The RSPCA are encouraging pet owners to take a few simple measures to ensure the safety of their pets. Ice cubes in water bowls, freezing treats in Kong toys, paddle pools and not walking dogs in the middle of the day can make all the difference to their overall health and wellbeing. According to the RSPCA, if an animal is suffering from heat stress, immediately cooling them down is crucial. “It’s no good rushing them to the vet in a hot car because the chances are their temperature will continue to rise. Try to cool them down first,” said Mr Beatty.

Stand up and speak this White Ribbon Day This year, White Ribbon Australia is uncovering the nation’s most shameful secret with a new creative campaign that highlights the insidious nature of male violence against women. Australia, land of secrets is a concept that is intended to give a voice to the everyday experiences of violence that occur all around Australia. With one woman killed every week by a current or former partner in Australia alone, it is important to understand how every act of male violence against women can have serious effects on women, families and society as a whole. These acts, from inappropriate behaviour or harassment, to physical and emotional abuse, are part of a culture of violence in Australia. Chairman of White Ribbon Australia, Lt. Gen Ken Gillespie (Rtd) says that while Australia is a proud nation and unrivalled for not only its physical beauty but also its way of life, it has a dark secret. “The high incidence of male violence against women in this country is not something we can be proud of, and nor is allowing known incidents to go unmentioned,” said Ken. “We need to make people more aware of the true nature of violence against women and that they should, and can, speak up when they’re aware of it.” This White Ribbon Day, Monday 25 November, White Ribbon Australia is encouraging people to speak up and uncover stories of violence against women. The issue of male violence against women is real and it’s worrying, but the extent to which it exists, and its impact in Australia has not been completely acknowledged. Any woman can be a victim, but every woman, and man, can make a stand and speak up about the issue. The launch of Australia, land of secrets, on the eve of White Ribbon Day, calls on men, women and the whole community to help uncover Australia’s secrets, raise awareness and stop violence against women. This campaign brings a new creative element to Australia’s only national male-led campaign to end men’s violence against women in its 10th Anniversary year. White Ribbon invites people to show their support for White Ribbon Day by hosting or attending one of the many White Ribbon events that take place across Australia (www.whiteribbon.org.au/events), sharing the campaign online (www.whiteribbon.org. au/secrets) or purchasing White Ribbon wristbands and ribbons at any Suzanne Grae, The Salvation Army (QLD, NSW, ACT) stores or the White Ribbon shop (www.whiteribbon.org.au/shop).

New lease of life for Augustine Heights landfill site

A disused landfill site at Brittains Road, Augustine Heights, will be transformed into a new recreational park for residents to use. The first stage of work involves putting a one metre deep clay cap on the entire site to manage environmental issues. This work is expected to be completed by December 2013. Once this stage is complete, the land will sit idle for around six months to allow for settlement. After this, embellishments to the area will include new footpaths, gardens and planting around the creek edge, as well as open space which will be turfed. Pedestrians will be able to access the park via a footpath on Brittains Road, which is the northern end, with future plans to add a pedestrian path at the southern end of Tetta Street.

Free micro chipping for dogs and cats

Ipswich City Council offers free micro chipping for your pet when you register your cat or dog for the first time. Council has also introduced a Registration Rewards Program to thank dog and cat owners for being responsible pet owners. The program includes over $2,200 worth of value and every registered dog and cat owner in Ipswich will receive a brochure this financial year. This program will run until 30 June 2014. Each year, owners will receive vouchers when they renew their registration. For further information about this Reward Program or the micro chipping, contact Ipswich City Council on 3810 6666 or visit www.ipswich.qld.gov.au.

New road and railway stations

The new Springfield and Springfield Central Railway Stations are due to open in December 2013. Over 500 parking spaces will be provided at the Springfield Central Railway Station which will be accessible from Southern Cross Circuit adjacent to the Orion Shopping Centre. Ipswich City Council is currently constructing a new road from Augusta Parkway opposite Technology Drive at Augustine Heights to the Springfield Greenbank Arterial which will provide a more direct access from Augustine Heights and Brookwater to Springfield and Camira. NATIONAL SENIORS UPDATE

Goodna/Redbank Branch by Vera

Somerwil, Branch President

Last month the Goodna Redbank National Seniors branch had the usual interesting time. At the monthly branch meeting we had Jessie Behrendoff from the Oxley West Moreton Medicare Local speak about the advantages of having a personal e-health record. Members were interested to hear all about this new technology and how it worked. There was a concern that once signed up nothing further seemed to happened, all was explained such as there needed to be a conversation between doctor and patient and details recorded on the e-health record. There hasn’t been a great take up so far but as patients understand the technology, more are likely to join up. Just a reminder that at the November meeting the guest speaker will be from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) this will be followed by a barbecue. The coffee club for Wednesday the 4th December will at the Redbank Muffin Break, 10.00am. Places are still available for the trip to the Eumundie markets on the 27th November. This trip is an opportunity to catch up on Christmas shopping. On the same track Christmas is just around the corner. This year’s lunch will be held at the Springfield Tavern on Tuesday 17th December. Bookings are well advanced for this. National Seniors Goodna/Redbank Branch monthly meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at the Goodna Leagues Club, Brisbane Terrace, 9.30am for a 10.00am start, visitors are welcome. Contact Val on 3297 5735 for further information.

EVERY YOUNG PERSON DESERVES A YOUNG LIFE Aged care is no place for any young person. Yet right now, more than 7,500 young Australians with high care needs are living in aged care. 700,000 more are being cared for at home by family and friends, often with limited support. Why? If you, or a loved one, were to suffer an accident or illness that left you, or them, in need of full-time care, there are currently few alternatives for care and housing available. Youngcare works to change this by building more age appropriate housing; financially assisting through At Home Care Grants; and providing information and advice through the Youngcare Connect hotline. Every young person deserves a young life and you can help create change by visiting www.youngcare.com.au/donate
