Personally Speaking PHYSIO with Susannah Friis

Current worldBy issues have usFriis all feeling a little off kilter, Susannah I think. It feels a little like you couldn’t throw a dart at a map of the world without landing on a country that is in the middle of a serious crisis. I make a point of not watching the news every day; not because I want to be ignorant, but because I hear enough of it just going about my ordinary days that purposefully sitting down to watch it might just send me over the edge. I spoke with two dear friends on two different occasions just recently. Both had wonderful ‘good news’ to tell me. Both these friends have had it pretty rough for quite some years, so I was overjoyed to hear that things were finally looking up for them. It does something to us just to hear good news even if it doesn’t relate to us, doesn’t it? I found my mood lifted, I kept smiling remembering what they told me about and I found my thoughts focused on the good that was happening to them, rather than the ‘bad’ things that had happened to them in the past. It’s no secret that dwelling on our troubles brings us down, as does dwelling on all the trouble in the world around us. I have a bit of a rule: if I find out about a certain issue, I assess it to see if I can help. If I can, then I do. If I can’t, then I generally don’t focus on it. Many of the problems we face in the world today, we can’t help solve. I, personally, can’t do anything about ISIS, or the US economy, the outbreak of Ebola or the unrest in Syria. BUT, homelessness in my own city, human trafficking, farmers doing it tough, children in Australia going to bed hungry each night - these are things I can help be part of the solution for. I may not be able to eradicate homelessness, human trafficking, or make it rain for the farmers, or ensure that every child in Australia is well fed, cared for and educated. But I can do something. You see, worrying about world issues that we can do nothing about is pointless, particularly when there are many issues going on right around us that we can do something about. It’s not about being ignorant of world events and global issues, it’s actually about being in touch with our skill set and our strengths that we can put to use for whatever need we see that we know we can affect. If you’re concerned about what you’re watching on the world news every night, why not start focussing on the things you can do locally instead of worrying about all the things overseas that you, most likely, can’t change. Take a look around you. What issues are happening right on your doorstep that you could get involved with bringing about a solution to? You may not be someone who can change the whole world, but you could change the whole world for someone.

AWARD AWARD--WINNING WINNING

The Westside Community Care Christmas Vouchers and Hampers Appeal is about to launch for 2014. This appeal has helped Westside Community Care (WCC) provide support for struggling families in the Greater Springfield region for the last 17 years. With this appeal, and other fundraisers, WCC raises funds to purchase food vouchers from local businesses and make up food parcels for the Christmas period and throughout the New Year. In the last year, WCC have distributed around 400 sets of vouchers and close to 1000 food parcels to families in need throughout the Greater Springfield, Camira, Carole Park, and Gailes region. WCC also organise a Community Christmas Morning Tea on Christmas day for families, which includes giving each family a hamper to take home. There has already been nearly $4,000 raised so far by way of generous donations from IGA, Ipswich City Council, Loan Market Golf Day, Cr David Morrison, Bernie Ripoll, Bank of QLD, Springfield Accounting, and other private donors. WCC needs the community to get alongside them in helping others in our community. All donations are tax deductible. If you would like to nominate a struggling family to receive a voucher or hamper, or can donate money, gift vouchers or hamper items, speak with Phil by calling 0411 021 153 or send an email to phil@westsidecommunitycare.

THE CREATIVE heART

Creative heART provides artistic opportunities for CPL clients CPL’s Springfield centre has been exploring and are proud to announce a new partnership with the Creative HeArt Greater Springfield program. CPL is a non-profit organisation that provides vital support and services to more than 8,000 children and adults with disabilities in Queensland and Northern NSW. Creative HeArt GS are offering opportunities to run workshops for the community and CPL Springfield clients who attend the centre at Springfield. Laurel Evans, CPL’s Springfield Manager, said she was excited to welcome Creative HeArt GS into their centre and is looking forward to the opportunities this new partnership will offer CPL’s clients. “CPL’s centre at Springfield is a fun and exciting space for people with disabilities to make friends, learn new skills and express their creativity,” Laurel said. “Some of our clients love the art programs we offer and will love the opportunity to learn more about art and create new pieces, with the help of Creative HeArt GS. “It’s great to think we have the support of these local community groups and we are more than happy to provide Creative HeArt GS with the use of our meeting rooms to establish new local networks and work in collaboration to continue the growth of these groups,” she said. “We are really looking forward to work together with CPL and Greater Springfield to offer creative avenues and presence in our community,” said Jolanta Szymczyk, one of the drivers behind the Creative HeART GS group’s formation. “Creativity is such an important element in peoples’ lives, a pathway to stronger friendship, connection and support, health and wellbeing. Creativity brings people together, but more importantly, it overcomes barriers in the society and community.” If you are creative yourself or are part of a creative group, run a creative business or included in creative activities and would like to be part of this creative community and networking group, check for the updates on Creative HeART GS facebook page – www.facebook.com/GSCreativeHub. Veterinary News By Dr Milan Savkovic BVSc GradDipVSc

A common reason for cat owners to contact a vet is when they have seen blood in the cat’s litter tray or have seen their cat going to the tray more frequently than normal or straining to go to the toilet. A common cause of these signs is the syndrome known as Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD), sometimes referred to as cystitis. FLUTD or cystitis can have numerous causes. Viral or bacterial infections are sometimes involved, but not nearly as frequently as in dogs and people. Formation of crystals in the urine often plays a role and certain diets are more likely to contribute to this. Stress plays a role in some cats. Sometimes the cause is unknown and this is referred to as idiopathic cystitis. Cystitis is a distressing, painful condition. Even when the bladder is empty, the cat will feel the need to urinate and will strain, producing only small drops or no urine at all. The inflammation leads to spasm of the muscles of the bladder and urethra, making the problem worse. In male cats, the urethra can be obstructed by a plug of crystals and mucus so the cat cannot pass urine. This is a life-threatening emergency, which requires immediate veterinary attention.

The treatment for cystitis depends on the cause, and it is necessary to examine a urine sample to determine what the cause is. It can be difficult to get urine samples from cats sometimes and your vet may recommend hospitalisation for a short period to achieve this. Male cats with obstructions need to be anaesthetized to have the obstruction relieved, and a urinary catheter may be left in place for a short time. Medications to relieve spasm, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics may also be used. If the cystitis is related to crystal formation, special diets will help to control it. In cases of idiopathic cystitis, drugs that protect the bladder lining may be used. Long term management is needed in many cats that suffer from cystitis. Unfortunately, it is impossible to predict which cats will be affected. Cats that are overweight seem to be predisposed; also cats that only eat supermarket brand biscuits often develop urinary problems. As a general rule, always ensure your cat has easy access to drinking water, try to feed the premium brand cat foods available at vet clinics, and if you see any signs indicating cystitis, consult your veterinarian promptly.

With summer just around the corner, residents are reminded to take the time to prepare their properties for the upcoming storm season. Clearing leaves from gutters and valleys is the first step to saving yourself from the heartache of suffering storm damage to your home or property. This will help to ensure that water does not back up in the gutters and end up entering the ceiling of houses. The second step involved inspecting the roof and keeping it well maintained to prevent water entering the home. Other vital checks involve securing all loose objects in the yard such as outdoor furniture and always removing dead branches or vegetation. Householders also need to create an emergency plan and prepare an emergency kit with items such as a battery operated radio, bottled water and a torch with spare batteries. A wealth of information to help people prepare for emergencies is available from Ipswich City Council’s website at www.ipswich.qld.gov.au/residents/emergency_ management Information listed includes evacuation plans, emergency plans, emergency kits, home preparations and pet emergency plans and lists are also available in 15 different languages including Indonesian, Arabic, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, French, Samoan, Greek, Hindi, Hmong, Punjabi, Spanish, Portuguese and Vietnamese. The website contains a full list of emergency contacts to assist residents and encourages residents to also ensure the phone number for the State Emergency Service (SES), 132 500, is in a prominent place. An SES app is available to download on Apple and Android devices via iTunes and Google play. For more information about floods, storms and other natural disasters, residents should also visit the Ipswich SES website at www.ipswichses.net.au/.

Starting warming up your singing voice for this year’s Carols at Robelle Domain Presented by the Greater Springfield Combined Churches, this year’s Orion Springfield Central Carols at Robelle Domain will be held on Saturday 6 December. Organisers are anticipating that this may be the biggest carols event in Greater Springfield yet, especially given a new overflow area with screen located near the bridge that connects Orion Town Centre with Robelle Domain, sponsored by Mayor Paul Pisasale. The popular community event includes a visit from Santa and Mrs Claus as well as performances from local artists and the retelling of the Christmas story complete with camels and a manger scene. The singing of Christmas carols, animals, spectacular fireworks, free ice blocks, glow products and Bernie Ripoll once again handing out special prizes on the night, all make for a perfect way to ring in the Christmas season. With the new overflow area families will have plenty of room to bring a picnic and enjoy a bit more space while still enjoying the carols concert on the big screen with big sound. This year the Christmas story will also be retold with the help of a character or two from Frozen. Artists include Paris Morgan, a talented, young upcoming local singer along with some favourites including Tim McCallum, a wheelchair bound singer with an amazing voice who featured most recently on ABC News 24. The night will begin with a pre-program at 5.30pm followed by the program starting at 6.45pm and finishing with a spectacular fireworks display at 8.30pm, sponsored by USQ Springfield. Other major sponsors include Heritage Bank Springfield Central, Harcourts Ipswich Springfield, Ipswich City Council, Lend Lease and Springfield Land Corp.

year the standards of achievement across the Creative Arts have risen to new heights with students achieving a high level of success at a range of eisteddfods, Theatre Sports and AMEB and Trinity Examinations. It is hard to believe the 2014 school year is already drawing to a close. 2014 has been a very good year for the College students who are to be commended for the positive and active manner in which they engage in a TSAC education. It has been very pleasing to witness the progress and achievements of students across the academic, creative arts and sporting spectrum during the year. On Wednesday, 29 October, just over 500 parents and students attended the annual Sports Presentation Dinner held at The Gabba. During the year, the level of student participation has been extremely high, with great success experienced by College teams and individual athletes. College teams won fifteen premierships, with 65 students representing at either Regional, State or National level, eight of which were at National level. On Wednesday, 5 November,The Creative Arts Awards Evening acknowledged the significant achievements of students across Music, Dance, Drama and Visual Arts. This

Page 12 - November 2014 - The Greater Springfield Times

Later in November, the Years Four to Twelve Night of Celebration will acknowledge the academic and leadership achievements of students, with 2014 providing a very good year academically for College students. The 2014 NAPLAN Results are a good indication of this, with this year’s NAPLAN Results improving on 2013 by some margin, creating a positive trend that now extends to four years. I use these examples not only to highlight the achievements of students, but also to indicate the emphasis that the College places on acknowledging student achievement. In our view, it is very important to take every opportunity, where deserved, to let our students know when they are doing good things across all aspects of their schooling. Such a culture encourages students to be ambitious and to try hard which, in themselves, are important traits now and into the future. Steve Croft Head of College

Members of the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield welcomed representatives from the Mt Ommaney Special School, Jim Green and Jen McDonald to speak at our meeting about the focus of the special school on parent, community and school engagement. This focus involves building partnerships with local community organisations and business to build enhanced learning opportunities for students with disabilities in our local community. Jen, a parent, supported Jim, a dedicated program officer at the school, in the presentation and both imparted to the club the need for every child, regardless of ability and additional support, to receive an education. Jen, in particular, appreciated the opportunity to talk about disability and its challenges from a parents perspective. Mount Ommaney Special School is one of the few schools in the western suburbs which provides specialised educational programs for children from birth to grade 12. There are currently 125 enrolled students who attend from a wide geographic area including the western suburbs, Greater Springfield and Ipswich. The school requires assistance with funding for specialist therapy and mobility equipment to assist the schools therapy team. Currently the school requires a specialist tricycle for older students with full pelvic and upper body support which allows students of almost any physical ability to be safely mounted. The cost of a specialised tricycle is $5,094 of which the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield will assist to fund. The club encourages readers to support this initiative. The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield encourages local community groups to take the opportunity to speak at our weekly meetings. Speakers not only enrich the experience of being a Rotarian, but provides many opportunities for guest speakers to reach an audience of professional people and the wider community through the Rotary network. We invite you to find out whether you might be suitable to come to a meeting and talk to our members. Besides being a guest speaker, of course we welcome visitors to our Club to be their audience. The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield holds its meetings every Thursday evening at 6.30pm at the Springfield Lakes Hotel (ex Niche Hotel) 7/1 Springfield Blvd - Springfield Lakes. For enquiries, contact Club Secretary Lachlan Clarke on 0433 801 753, or Chris Steinback on 0411 472 684 or email us on greaterspringfieldrotary@hotmail.com.

Indoor swim centre under construction

The design is complete and construction has commenced on Peter McMahon’s Swim Factory at Orion Springfield Central. Springfield Councillor David Morrison said Orion Springfield Central and Peter McMahon have made a bold decision to incorporate an indoor swim centre as part of Orion Springfield Central. The indoor centre will include a 20m heated pool that will offer classes 12 months of the year. “Peter McMahon is a swimming legend himself and has completed many distance swims around the world,” said Cr Morrison. “His school has been teaching Ipswich residents to swim for over 20 years. “I congratulate Orion Town Centre and Peter McMahon on their vision and commitment and I am sure their partnership will be a great success.”

The first Wednesday of October was our meeting day and our guest speaker was Rhonda Barwick who gave us a talk on Healthy Living which was very interesting. October 8 was our games and card morning followed by morning tea. We all enjoyed a picnic in the park at Robelle Domain on October 15. For our monthly outing we went to Twin Towns to see ‘Back to Tivoli’ and what a show it was! Everyone enjoyed it, as well as lunch and some time spent playing the pokies before it was back on the bus to head home after a good day out. If you’re interested in joining us, give Pat a call on 3818 9343.

Goodna/Springfield

Probus Club Update by Pat van der Beek Hi all and welcome to the monthly column of the Goodna/Springfield Probus Club. The picture above shows some of us enjoying coffee at the Shingle Inn at City Hall on a recent excursion to the city. Our speaker for November was George Hogg OAM who spoke about his long association with the Queensland Eisteddfod Council of which he has been President for the past thirteen years. Ipswich based, George is a singer/musician and voice teacher who established the popular Ipswich Orpheus Chorale in 1969. The Chorale is a popular and very successful community choir which currently has over one hundred members. There will be no speaker for December as we will round off the year, as usual, with a wine and cheese function in place of a Guest Speaker. October’s outing to the Cooneana Mining Museum at New Chum was a great success, it is a wonderful display of Ipswich’s heritage. Thanks to David and the other volunteers who dedicate their time to the museum for the fascinating tour of the premises. This is a wonderful day out for children and adults who are keen to learn more of the city’s history. November’s excursion will be to the Tramways Museum at Ferny Grove on Wednesday 19/11, 10-noon approximately. The lunch venue is the Ferny Grove Tavern and car-pooling can be arranged for this outing. There will be no excursion for December as our Christmas Party will be held on Saturday, 6 December at the Camira Friends and Neighbours Hall where we hold our monthly meetings. We have some exciting activities planned for 2015, more on those in December’s column. Our regular coffee morning at Robelle Domain will be on Friday 21 November and this month’s pub lunch will be at the Centenary Tavern on Wednesday 26 November at noon. (Note change of venue). All members are welcome at all activities and potential members are encouraged to contact Vic on the number below for details. There is no charge for your first meeting and you are under no obligation to join. Your first step is to ring Vic on 3271 1096 or join us at 1.30pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Camira Friends and Neighbours Clubhouse in Bruce Lane (cnr Langley Road), Camira.

Local Development GE Australia - Work on the Queensland headquarters of GE Australia situated on Barry Alexander Drive Springfield Central is well underway. This $72 million office complex will house the majority of its Queensland office-based employees in the purposebuilt 14,000 square metre office building from early 2015. Mater Private Hospital Springfield Central - Construction is progressing well on Stage One of Mater Private Hospital, an 80-bed private hospital and cancer care centre. It has been announced that Mater Health Services have entered into an agreement to treat 4800 public patients each year at Mater Private Hospital Springfield Central when it opens its doors at the end of 2015. Orion Springfield Central expansion - Construction is underway for Stage 2 of Orion Springfield Central encompassing Event Cinemas, Target, Coles and approximately 80 additional retailers, including fashion, cafes and restaurants and a new family focused tavern. It is estimated construction will be completed by December 2015. Microchipping your pet A microchip provides a permanent ID which can quickly reunite you with your lost or injured pet. This could literally save your pet’s life. Sadly, many pets which end up in pounds and shelters are not identified because they don’t have a chip or tag and their owners cannot be located. Microchips cannot be removed or fall off like the traditional collar and tag. Check the Ipswich City Council website www.ipswich.qld.gov.au for more information about free microchipping days for first time registration. Goodna Plant Nursery The Goodna Plant Nursery, previously in Stuart Street Goodna, has moved to the corner of Church & Queen Streets, Goodna adjacent to the War Memorial. The nursery is there every Wednesday from 8.00am to noon. Residents can collect six free plants a year. For more information re proof of residency and other Ipswich nursery opening hours, check the Ipswich City Council website on www.ipswich.qld.gov.au. NATIONAL SENIORS UPDATE

Goodna/Redbank Branch by Vera

Somerwil

Welcome to the National Seniors Goodna/Redbank Branch article for November. The Branch meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month commencing at 9.30am for 10.00am at the Goodna Leagues Club Brisbane Terrace, Goodna overlooking the Brisbane river and right now, the jacarandas are in full bloom, you can miss it. In October, fifteen members rocked up to the Citiswich Café at Ebbw Vale for coffee, cake and conversation, and the day trippers ventured by train to Toowong station, then by river on the CityCat to New Farm Park. This was an exercise in using another form of transport using their Translink go cards. It was a great day out, the roses were worth seeing although one suspected they were in need of some rain. The speaker for the October meeting was Frank Levy from Queensland Travel Train. How interesting to hear that the current Sunlander retires at the end of the year and a new modern train will replace it. Concession card holders were most interested to hear how this would affect them. There are a number of reasonable affordable package tours available up the Queensland coast and westwards for 2015. The guest speaker for the meeting on 18 November will be Nick Burke from Scanguard, who will address the subject of credit card fraud. A reminder that the Wednesday morning coffee club for 2 December will be at Gloria Jeans, Orion Shopping Centre at Springfield. With the end of the year coming up rapidly, members are reminded to register with John on 3271 4767 for Christmas Lunch at the Springfield Tavern. Before closing, former branch members representing the branch on the Ipswich City Council Seniors Consultative Council have completed their terms of office and have now retired. Congratulations to Rosemaree Gascoigne who will represent the Goodna/ Redbank Branch for the next two years. For further information about branch meetings and activities please contact our secretary Val Randle, on 3297 5735.

WMAC’s Big Band triumphs with three top honours at Prestige Music Fest

W

Award winning WestMAC Big Band with conductor Mr Rowley Moore.

est Moreton Anglican College (WestMAC) Big Band took out the three top honours at the Prestige Music Festival held recently. The Big Band were awarded a Platinum Award for their performance in the ‘A’ Grade Secondary School Jazz Ensemble category at the annual state wide school bands competition that runs for three weeks around Brisbane in October. Platinum is awarded for “an outstanding ensemble in all aspects – musicianship, technique and presentation.” The Prestige Festival adjudicator, Mr Neill Thacker, was wowed by the Big Band’s performance providing a number of highly complementary accolades in his adjudication report. The MC of the competition, Mr Chris Scott, proclaimed that, "If you closed your eyes during WestMAC’s performance you could easily imagine you were in a professional jazz club listening to Gordon Goodwin or Maynard Ferguson’s Big Band.” As well as the ensemble honours, WestMAC trombonists Hannah Smith, Madeline Toft, Daniel Walton and Matthew Eden were awarded the Best Section. The adjudicator, Mr Thacker, when announcing the Best Soloist – Adjudicators Award to Year 12 WestMAC student Hannah Smith, stated to the capacity audience that Hannah was one of the best young trombonists he had ever heard, playing with passion, strength and technique. WestMAC Director of Music and Big Band Conductor, Mr Rowley Moore, couldn’t contain his excitement, and said, “It was a fine performance – the best I have ever heard them play.”

Then&Now

a look back at Greater Springfield with Cr David Morrison In the heart of Springfield Central is the very popular 24 ha Robelle Domain which is part of Springfield Central Parkland. One of the most popular areas within Robelle Domain is the Water Bucket. Cr David Morrison remembers very clearly working with the design group to ensure quality was delivered within the given budget. Cr David Morrison said he was surprised when the prices of many ‘off the shelf ’ products were actually more expensive than having a one off design manufactured by an engineering company. The Robelle Water Bucket is a one off design made and designed in SE QLD and is unique to Robelle Domain. Maintenance is currently underway and the rubber soft fall has been completely removed, with the Water Bucket back in operation and ready for use by the end of November.

Pictured above: Cr David Morrison inspects the water bucket being manufactured in 2010 and pictured right: the water bucket today.
