Thousands flocked to Lanterns in the Park at Robelle Domain last month. Scouts in action donate much appreciated wool Members of a newly formed crochet group in Forest Lake recently gathered at Settlers Forest Lake for a special presentation of wool from Goodna Scouts Group. When Scout Group L e a d e r, B e r n i c e , h e a r d about the crochet group her mother in law was involved with, she saw an opportunity for the Scouts to help. Thirteen Cub Scouts brought in over 80 balls of wool to donate to the group which then gives the completed blankets to those in need. Crochet group members Hilary and Colleen gladly accept It was the perfect week the donated wool from the Goodna Cub Scouts. for the presentation as the Scouts participated in their annual Scouts in Action Week, with the theme this year of Scouting in the Community. The Cub Scouts were delighted to present their big bag of donated wool and also spend time with members of the group by serving them morning tea on the day.

It seems to be that society celebrates the strong, or those perceived to be anyway. We are all about the winners, the heroes, strength and invincibility. And we all strive to be strong. We want to be known as someone who withstands trials, who stands firm and unwavering. We want to be those people and we want to be around those people. We don’t like weakness, generally. I’m no psychologist but I wonder if it’s because it reminds us of our own weakness and in a world that is full of platitudes about how strong we are on the inside, about overcoming obstacles, speaking out and standing up, that just won’t do. Here’s what I don’t get: if we logically can understand that we are all, each and every one of us, weak at times, why is it such a big deal? I suspect the answer lies in our past memories of being hurt, of being in a vulnerable position, mentally, emotionally, physically, that we shy away from the possibility of having to go through that pain again. And we are right. It’s not prudent to reveal your weaknesses to those who can, or who have in the past, hurt you. We must be wise about where and with whom we make ourselves vulnerable. Yet I think there is also wisdom in taking a chance. Opening up to someone about how you’re feeling, really feeling, can path the way to deeper more meaningful communication. Sometimes, until we make ourselves vulnerable we can’t truly enter into worthwhile relationships. We need to let the other person see us warts and all. And we also need to allow them to do the same. When we are sharing vulnerabilities, we form bonds that can lay a wonderful foundation for future connection. There are times, though, when we make ourselves vulnerable and we don’t know the outcome. We have no idea how that person will respond to us showing them our weaknesses, so it’s risky. The hope is that they will respond with sensitivity, gentleness and kindness. Now, you and I both know that certainly isn’t always the case is it? We’ve all been mistreated by someone we thought we could trust, we’ve all shared something close to our hearts, only to find it used against us at a later date. It’s awful. It hurts. And it’s hard to move past. But in order to not allow those incidences to affect the rest of our lives and relationships, we simply must risk again. We must resolve to not let the hurt grow into bitterness and resentment. Allowing someone else’s actions to change who we are makes no sense. Know that for every person who doesn’t handle your weakness in the right way, there are ten others who will. We just need to be discerning and never give up risking the hurt to find the ones who are worth risking it for.

Users of Old Logan Road, Camira, will witness trenching between Camira State School and Springfield Parkway. This is due to Energex providing additional power to the substation currently being constructed in Springfield Central. Cr David Morrison said the power going underground is a result of State Member Annastacia Palaszczuk and himself meeting with Energex representatives over 12 months on behalf of concerned residents as Energex were going to place the 33KVA power lines overhead. Cr David Morrison said he received letters from concerned residents and organised a meeting with the state member and Energex management to advocate on behalf of the residents. Cr David Morrison thanks Energex management for listening to residents’ concerns and deciding to place the heavy duty cables underground. So far the traffic management along Old Logan Road has been well managed, with traffic still flowing well in peak times.

Volunteer at RSPCA this spring An increase in rescue calls has signalled the arrival of spring at RSPCA Queensland’s Animal Care Campus, and the Wacol site is in desperate need of volunteers to answer these calls and perform other important tasks. RSPCA Queensland is seeking animal lovers for volunteer roles in the Animal Care Campus’ Call Centre and Laundry. “Our teams are working hard to meet increased demands this spring, but we need more volunteers to share the workload,” said RSPCA Queensland Volunteer Services Senior Manager, Amanda McNaught. “Volunteers are the lifeblood of the RSPCA, and we couldn’t exist without them,” Ms McNaught said. The Call Centre takes about 300,000 calls a year and, with a huge increase in calls received about animals requiring assistance due to the warmer weather, the Centre urgently needs to expand its team of dedicated volunteers. Animals at the Wacol campus also rely upon volunteers at the on-site Laundry, who ensure that all cats, dogs, wildlife, and other animals have clean, comfortable bedding each night. The Laundry processes 20 bins of washing each day, and more volunteers are required to operate commercial washers and dryers and store fresh laundry in the supply room. “Volunteering can be incredibly rewarding, and volunteers in all areas at the RSPCA have the satisfaction of knowing that they’re helping to give most animals a second chance,” Ms McNaught said. If you like working to support animals and enjoy meeting new people, then consider volunteering at the RSPCA Queensland Animal Care Campus at Wacol. Volunteer roles are available seven days a week and all volunteers attend a Volunteer Orientation and Level 1 of Four Paws Forward training on their first day, with further training provided throughout the year. RSPCA Queensland volunteers can also participate in Make Your Mark, a new program that recognises and rewards RSPCA team members. Now that the weather is warming up and we are starting to get some rain, we are entering tick season. Paralysis ticks,naturally infest wildlife but they will also attach to domestic animals and occasionally people. Native wildlife is, in general, resistant to the toxic effects of the paralysis tick, but dogs and cats will rapidly develop paralysis as the toxin enters their system. Paralysis ticks are more commonly found in areas where there is dense ground cover or bush, especially near water, but the expansion of suburbia into adjacent bushland means that paralysis ticks can also be found in clean, tidy backyards. Ticks attach firmly to the skin of our pets and inject a toxin as they feed. Signs usually appear about 24 - 36 hours after attachment of the tick. The most common sign of tick paralysis is weakness or wobbliness in the hind legs. This weakness progresses to the front legs and advances until the pet is unable to stand. The muscles of the throat are affected also. This causes a change in your pet’s voice and difficulty swallowing, which leads to your pet being off food, and in some cases, food or water may be inhaled instead of swallowed, which can cause pneumonia. If the tick paralysis is not treated, eventually all muscles will be paralysed, breathing will stop, the heart will fail and death will occur. Treatment for tick paralysis involves hospitalization and the injection of an antitoxin. This rapidly neutralises tick toxin in the blood, but is much slower to get into the nervous system, so it can take some days to reverse the signs of paralysis. In severe cases, pets may also need oxygen and intravenous fluids. The success rate is high if treated early. As with most diseases, prevention is better than cure. There is nothing available to stop ticks getting on your dog or cat, but using a tick collar or spot-on and spray products on your pet will reduce the likelihood of a tick attaching, and if one does attach growth will be slowed and the tick can be removed it before it can cause serious illness. Because none of the preventatives are 100% effective, it is also very important to physically check your pet for ticks every day. Run your fingertips through the coat systematically checking the whole skin surface. Most ticks will attach around the head, neck, chest and shoulders but they can attach anywhere. Remember to check carefully under the collar. Checking every day is important because it means you have a better chance of detecting growing ticks that were difficult to feel initially due to their small size. If you do find a tick, we now know it’s best to pull it straight off. Importantly, do not apply kerosene or other poisons to the tick – this will only irritate your pet’s skin, may be toxic to your pet and will cause the tick to release more toxin as it dies slowly. Your pet can develop signs of paralysis up to 48 hours after a tick is removed, so watch closely for any problems. If you notice any signs of wobbliness, change in voice, vomiting or decreased appetite please consult your vet immediately to make sure your pet doesn’t become a victim of tick paralysis this summer.
eSmart Libraries program now available Ipswich City Council has become part of a national network designed to raise an awareness of online safety in the community. Ipswich Libraries has joined the eSmart Libraries program, taking advantage of a national roll-out of the program across Australia. eSmart Libraries is a cybersafety initiative funded through a six year partnership between The Alannah and Madeline Foundation and Telstra Foundation in collaboration with 1500 public libraries Australia wide and key industry bodies including the Australian Library and Information Association. The program aims to extend an awareness of cybersafety and well-being to the community and is based on a proven model successfully implemented through the eSmart Schools initiative. As we move into the season of summer storms and the jacarandas are in full bloom, there is this awareness that the end of the year is closer than we think. Reflecting back for a moment to last month, the branch held its Annual General Meeting, the committee 2012-13, was returned with one retiring member and a new member joining the committee. Guest speaker Mark Furness gave an interesting update on happenings with National Seniors nationally. The committee will continue to provide interesting speakers and activities for its members. The next coffee club will be held on Wednesday 6th November, this time at the Welcome Salvation Army Coffee shop, Smiths road Goodna at the usual time of 10.00am. The November branch meeting will be held on the 19th, guest speaker will be Jeff Crane from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) this will be followed by a barbecue on the veranda. For members seeking something different with their Christmas gift shopping, the club will be journeying to Eumundie Markets on the 27th November, bookings are being taken now by John. Kiwanis members celebrate in style Kiwanis members from as far as Melbourne and Sydney came to celebrate with new and old members and friends of the Kiwanis Club of Brisbane who gathered at the Jindalee Bowls club to mark twenty five years of community service. Chartered on August 6, 1988, the club members have been helping to change not only the world, but also their local communities by raising funds for a wide range of charities for a quarter of a century. Ninety one people attended the dinner including two charter members, Mr Brent Walsh and Richard Ingelido who accepted, on behalf of Wayne Cole, a framed Legion of Honour certificate presented by the Australian District Governor Mr Norm Mc Lennen. Wayne, also a charter member and current member of the Brisbane Club, was in Newfoundland for a family wedding. The Governor also presented another member, Mr Ivan Bell, with a Legion of Honour certificate. Ivan was also presented with a gold jacket by the Governor elect, Mr John Bromelow, for his contribution to the Kiwanis Foundation. Member, Lieutenant Governor, Pat McKinney, inducted the incoming office bearers for 2013 – 2014: President, Anita Lennox; Vice President, Steve Smith; Secretary, Marie Simpson; and Treasurer, Bev Lancaster. The outgoing President, Mal spoke tthe guests about the work Kiwanians have been doing around the globe for almost 100 years, and for the past twenty five years, the local clubs own involvement within the community, nationally and internationally. It’s so lovely to be living in such a wonderful country, the weather is so beautiful this time of the year - mind you, we do need rain! Guest speaker for the month of September was Dr Rachael from the Veterinary Clinic of Springfield. Anyone who has a dog or cat found her very interesting, as she gave a talk about how bad ticks are at this time of the year, so remember to check your dogs every day. We also lost one of our long time members, Geoff Bently, who died 12th September. You will be sadly missed, Geoff. September 25th we had International day at the clubhouse and a lot of our members made different kinds of food from different countries. The food was lovely and enjoyed by all. We had some exciting events already this month, with our outing to Twin Towns to see a show on October 16. Anyone interested in joining the club can ring Val on 3288 2689 or Pat 3818 9343.
Ipswich Council has commenced a strategically significant link road between Augusta Park Way, Augustine Heights and Springfield Greenbank Arterial, Springfield. The road, referred to as Road 10, is Council’s single largest road project for the 2013/14 year. Springfield based Cr David Morrison said he thanked Councillors for their support in supporting this vital link in the ever growing Greater Springfield Area. “Eventually 86 000 people will call the Greater Springfield Area home,” said Cr Morrison. “If we fail to plan and deliver key infrastructure now, we are asking for many problems in the future. The current community will welcome this road... the future community will appreciate it.” The road will eventually be four lanes and the initial construction costs is $10 million.

I’ve always been curious as to how much practical experience cosmetic injectors have access to, whether it be on a refresher course basis, or a new product launch. No model got the same lips and cheek bones. Each injector worked towards the ideal facial contour, harmonious proportions and balanced facial curves. The closer a face is to Phi proportion the more attractive they are considered. Both Andrew and I returned exhausted (yes, being a model is exhausting!) yet fully charged and ready to put the new techniques and products into practice. Student Success in Term Three Term Three at The Springfield Anglican College concluded on a very positive note. Students in Years Three, Five, Seven and Nine are to be congratulated for achieving excellent NAPLAN results. While the College is non selective academically, it is very pleasing to see that each of the cohorts achieved results well exceeding State means across each of the five elements of the NAPLAN Tests. NAPLAN results do need to be kept in context, understanding the results provide just one indication of student progress at one point in time and while this is how the College interprets the data, the results do provide valuable feedback on individual and collective student progress, in particular in areas for improvement. At the JTAS (Years Four to Six) Athletics Carnival, the College Team won their division for the first time in College history. This is an excellent achievement as the team competed against a number of older and much
Four College TAS (Years Seven to Twelve) teams won premierships in Trimester Three. This takes the total number of premierships to eleven for the year, which is also a very credible result given the schools the College teams are competing against. These results come on top of the highly successful College Musical - The King and I, earlier this term, and achievements of College Creative Arts groupings, at each of the Beenleigh, Ipswich and Brisbane Eisteddfods. Attention now turns to a relatively short but busy Term Four with a range of celebratory events such as the annual Sports Dinner, Nights of Celebration, the Year Twelve Formal and Year Twelve’s final week. The term wraps up early in December with end of year testing and reporting. As the College is growing in size, the range of other opportunities available to students is expanding quickly. There is a high degree of excitement among students in relation to the planned 2014 Ski Trip to Perisher Valley, the inaugural Basketball, Netball and Soccer Sports Trip to New Zealand in 2014 and the Gallipoli and Paris tour in 2015, which is also open to parents, Mr Steve Croft Head of College

Imagine for a moment that you wake up one day to find that your life is perfect. Your relationships are running smoothly without conflict; you’re performing at your peak in your job; you have the ideal balance between work and play; you feel energetic and enthusiastic each day; people who know you acknowledge your skills, honesty and commitment; you’re excited about the future, confident about your direction, optimistic about your own personal growth. Does this seem too good to be true? Well, it’s possible, in fact it’s probable IF you apply one of the core constructs emerging from Positive Psychology – systematically using your “signature strengths” on a daily basis. The identification of signature strengths (also known as “core human strengths”) came about from a three-year study undertaken a few years ago. A team of researchers set about exploring whether there are universally recognised character traits. By investigating a vast collection of religious texts, cultural myths and legends, and social values promoted by communities worldwide, they were able to collate 24 core strengths recognised by all cultures around the world. They grouped these into six universal values – courage, humanity, justice, wisdom, temperance, and transcendence. Each value comprises a set of “strengths” or personal qualities that when learned and applied ensure that one is living according to that particular value. The more values we live by, the more we are leading a “good life”. For example, the value of humanity is demonstrated by use of the strengths - love (giving and receiving positive emotions to nurture close relationships), kindness (generosity, giving time to others, showing compassion and altruism), and social intelligence (awareness of others’ feelings and being at ease in social situations). Each of us will at times use all of the 24 character strengths, but differences can be found in our preferences, in the same way as we have personalitybased preferences. So for example, one person’s top character strength (the one that most drives them) might be love of learning, whereas another person’s top strength might be humour. The rank ordering of these character strengths gives us a personal profile which we call our “signature strengths”, the one’s that most define us individually. These are typically our top five strengths. The survey is available at the VIA Institute on Character www.viame.org/www/ By knowing our signature strengths, we can begin to shape our lives far more effectively. We can draw on the knowledge of our strengths to help us focus more clearly on our life priorities rather than pursuing the “shoulds”. And we can identify specific life goals that will require use of particular strengths, then focus on building these strengths so we get to our goals sooner. This is where a Life Coach can be especially helpful by giving us exercises that target the development of certain strengths.

As I write this in the school holidays, it is another bright Spring morning with skies of cloudless blue. Hopefully by the time the article goes to print, we will have had some much-needed rain, crunchy lawns in Spring do not augur well for summer. Fine weather is nice for the children on holidays though and Ipswich has some great school holiday activities on offer. This month’s photo shows some of us enjoying an outing in August to the new tennis centre at Tennyson where we learned a great deal about the history of the sport in Queensland. In September, a few of our members enjoyed a trip to the cinema and lunch at Redbank Plaza. Later in the month, a larger group of us met for a chat over lunch at the Spring Lakes Hotel, a pleasant venue with a practical and inexpensive lunch menu for seniors. A few of us enjoyed a walk around the lakes afterwards. Our principal outing for October will be a special lunch at Restaurant 66 at South Brisbane TAFE on Thursday 31st October. This restaurant is operated by TAFE students (similar to the ‘Miner’s Right’ at Bundamba TAFE where we have enjoyed lunch on several occasions). There may also be an opportunity this month to catch up at a BYO breakfast at Robelle Domaine at Springfield Parklands (date to be determined). October’s speaker was Deanne Lawrie from Seniors Enquiry Line. Deanne gave us some useful information and was able to answer questions on a wide range of topics pertinent to our age demographic. Our November speaker will be Andrew Alback from the Camira Fire Station who will bring the crew and the fire appliance in case there is a call-out during the presentation! All members are welcome at all activities and potential members are encouraged to contact Gaye on the number below for details. Finally don’t forget our drop-in coffee mornings at Robelle Domain, Springfield Parklands, on the third Friday of each month. (This month’s date is 18th October). Locally developed app helps keep children safe Following National Child Protection Week in September, two Brisbane social workers have launched an app designed to highlight how to keep children safe. The IAssitSafety app walks children and parents through a step by step process of identifying adults who children can ask for help if feeling unsafe. The app was created by Centenary mum of three, Annaley Clarke and Beenleigh mum of five, Linda Smith. The two social workers, with over 40 years experience in the sector, have experienced firsthand the impact of abuse on children when they are not kept safe or allowed to voice their concerns. Based around the model of a hand, the five fingers represent five adults who the child views as safe. “The safe adults need to be people who the child sees regularly, people they can trust and people who will listen to the child,” developer Linda Smith said. After these adults are identified, IAssistSafety allows the child to easily access the five adult’s names at any time if they are scared, worried, sad or need help. The app also allows for the storage of photos and phone numbers for easy access and identification. “IAssistSafety is aimed at 3-12 year olds and can also be an invaluable tool for child care centres to keep a record of people who are safe to collect children as the photos assist with easy identification,” Mrs Smith said. With no other app like it currently available, IAssitSafety is an invaluable tool for all families. “All children deserve to be safe but we need to teach them who and how to tell us when they are not feeling safe and IAssistSafety allows children a voice to do this,” Mrs Smith said. 2013 Carols @ Robelle Domain The Orion Springfield Central Carols @ Robelle Domain organised by the Greater Springfield Combined Church has become the largest community event to be held at Robelle Domain. The Christmas Story with live animals was very well received last year. This year the camels have been booked and I am looking forward to celebrating the meaning of Christmas as a community on the 7th December. In my opinion, there is no more reliable form of public transport than rail. The delivery of rail to Springfield Central is a very significant milestone in fulfilling the vision for Greater Springfield. Some questions I am frequently asked Will Robelle Domain Stage two include a swimming lagoon? Regardless of the project, Council has to always consider the construction and ongoing operational costs. Robelle Domain stage two is no different, costs for the delivery and ongoing operational costs are being investigated for a couple major designs. No decision has been made at this stage whether a lagoon will be included or not. Will the AFL Brisbane Lions still come to Springfield given the recent change in Federal Government? Prior to the recent Federal Election the previous government committed $15 million towards the AFL Brisbane Lions relocating their training facilities to Springfield. As far as I am aware, the new government is still committed to the project. Council will be doing all we can to ensure this project still becomes a reality. Ipswich Cares For the last seven years, September has been used to raise funds for “Compassion Australia – Ipswich Cares”.
