Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis After a bit of a ‘no show’ winter, it already feels like summer is setting to make a big impact this year. At the moment though, and in my opinion, the weather is perfect. Still crisp mornings followed by clear blue skies, sunshiny days leading to lovely cool evenings. Yep, perfect! It’s the sort of weather that makes you want to get out there and do things, isn’t it? It’s not too hot and our energy hasn’t been sapped by the humidity by 9am. The Greater Springfield region boasts some wonderful green spaces that are accessible to everyone. So why not get out there and get active? I did a quick count of the articles in this edition and there are over 12 groups or clubs you could become involved in, and I know there are more out there in the community. Whether your thing is sport, craft and art, or volunteering, there are plenty of local groups to hook into. We all know the benefits of volunteering, not only to ourselves but to us as a collective community. In a busy world where time is our greatest currency, it’s important, dare I say, necessary, to give back with our time. Not only does it raise our own sense of well-being, it raises our awareness of issues in the community as well as the struggles that face some individuals living right alongside us. There’s a Seth Godin quote that says “You don’t need more time, you just need to decide.” That quote has really helped me to prioritise. We make time for what’s important to us. And if what we realise we’re spending all our time on doesn’t line up with our values, we might need to reassess how we are ordering our days. And make changes accordingly. There is no doubt that being involved with others, in whatever capacity, changes us - and for the better. It’s cliched, but nonetheless true, that we need each other. Just like pebbles in a stream, it’s the bumping into one another that helps smooth our edges as life washes over us. We need others to keep us accountable, to gently remind us of what’s important and, if we allow them, to call us on to become our best and truest self. And sometimes, we need to move out of our comfort zone and try a new sport, enrol in an art class, join a service club. No one ever grows in their comfort zone. And don’t forget, it’s a two-way street. Don’t be thinking that you’ll be the only one changing. We are all works in progress and it might just be (in fact, I know for sure!), that you joining that group or club makes a huge difference to someone else. So why not look into joining a group or club today? And why not start with the one of the 12 covered in the following pages! And just as importantly, if you are part of a not for profit club or group and would like to submit a monthly (or one-off) article to us, please do! The more ‘good stuff ’ we can promote, the better. It’s why we are here - to be a positive connection for residents to the community. And we just love it!

More on parasite prevention for your pets

There needs to be a plan to control both external and internal parasites for all pets, not only for their sake, but for their owners. The most common known external parasites are ticks, fleas, lice and mites. There is an incredible variety of internal parasites, the most common being stomach worms such as round, hook, whip and tape worms. Heart and lung worms are the most common of the other worms that live outside of the intestines. When deciding on the best way to control these annoying creatures owners need to consider the following: • Are your pets inside or outside? This mainly applies to cats but isolated inside pets are less exposed to parasites. Inside pets can still be exposed to parasites by contact with pets in the same household who go outside. • Do your pets hunt? This mainly applies to cats again but eating lizards, birds, rats and mice will give your pets certain types of worm infections. For example, eating lizards will give pets tape worm and eating rats and mice will cause round worm infections. • If your pets are outside, do they mix with other pets? For example fleas will easily jump from one pet to another and fleas give your pet tapeworm infections. Also, pets that visit areas where other pets defecate are very prone to picking up intestinal worm infections. • Is your pet exposed to mosquitos that carry heartworm? The answer is yes if your pets go outside and possibly if they are inside. • Do you live in an area where there are ticks? We have both bush and paralysis ticks in this area, so it is a consideration for Forest Lake residents. • Are your pets easy to medicate? If they are not, long acting products and spot ons are easier options. • Will I remember? Choosing long acting products with reminder systems in place is a very sensible option. If you are still not sure what your pet needs, discuss your options with a veterinary staff member. There are many product options available for many different situations. Bright minds experience university life at USQ Some of the region’s brightest students experienced campus life at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Ipswich last month. More than 250 Students from Springfield Central State High School, Forest Lake SHS and Woodcrest State College spent the day at USQ as part of their respective school’s excellence programs. USQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Jan Thomas said the MagnaLighthouse-ACE Day was designed to support and foster the development of highachieving Year 7-10 students. “This was a wonderful opportunity for students to explore what options are available when they finish high school and get a taste of university life,” Professor Thomas said. “Many students don’t consider visiting a university campus until the time they’re deciding their QTAC preferences, but events like this are a great way to build the Woodcrest State College students Trinity Mastromonaco and Savannah Treck with USQ student Jarath Cobcroft. (Credit – USQ Photography) aspirations of students in the early years of high school.” Students attended various interactive sessions tailored to their study or career interests, including para-medicine, nursing, sport and exercise, law, business, education, engineering, surveying and aviation. The event was also an ideal opportunity for students to speak with USQ academics and current students about their experiences. “This was the first time this event has been held at USQ Ipswich so we were very excited to showcase some of our specialised facilities and programs at the campus,” Professor Thomas said. “I hope all the students found this event to be a rewarding experience and encourage them to consider university as an option after high school.” Springfield Central SHS Year 9 student Ryan Leach said he took part in the event because he wanted to learn more about aviation. “I really enjoyed the aviation session. We got to learn about the dynamics of drones, including weight, lift, thrust and drag which are same acting forces on an airplane,” he said. Springfield Anglican College has a rowing vision Rowing Club Captain Caitlin Lythall announced recently a very progressive vision for the future of The Springfield Anglican College Boat club. “That The Springfield Anglican College will become the biggest new school rowing club in South East Queensland by 2020. Moreover, retiring Head of College Steve Croft could not be happier. “This fits in perfectly with the College plan of providing diversity and all types of experiences to students in Years 7 and 8, Mr Croft said. “What has amazed me most about our new rowing club is that the small number of girls and boys who have Kalista-Jane Shiner practices with a already taken up the sport not one of them has given Sydney Olympic Games Torch readying her ambition to up and they are already setting their goals to one day become a future Australian Rowing Olympian. represent Australia in the sport of rowing. President of the Parents Rowing Club Support Group, Aaron Leask, said that the organisation within the rowing club was unbelievable and the Director of Rowing, Dennis Taylor, is the best rowing coach he has ever come across. “Mr Taylor has gathered around him a incredible team of top rowing instructors and with the enormous support now coming from parents and the College, we are expecting to have at least 30 new rowers join the new Club and probably a lot more. What do an iPhone and Alzheimers have in common?

Springfield Lakes resident, Fiona Lorimer decided to think outside the box in an effort to raise much needed funds for Alzheimers Australia. What do an iPhone and Alzheimers have in common? Nothing usually but for one Springfield Lakes resident, the opportunity to combine her ‘addiction’ to Apple products and raising money for dementia was an idea too good to pass up. A member of local club, Greater Springfield Rotary, Fiona Lorimer is no stranger to fundraising, and after her and her husband cared for her mother who lived with Alzheimers for nine years, sadly, she’s no stranger to Alzheimers either. So when Fiona decided to camp out in line for the latest iPhone recently, she decided to put the time spent in line to good use. “I put a feeler post on facebook and was completely bowled over by the response of my friends, she said. “So many of my friends said they would sponsor me, that I decided to go ahead with the idea. “Despite the store closing due to low stock levels, I managed to stay there for 10 hours, three of those after the store had closed, and raised over $900. There’s still more trickling in, so I hope to get to $1000 which will go to Alzheimers Australia (Qld). “My husband and I still have residual health issues due to the extended period of stress caring for my mother, so I know how important it is for carers to get a break. “I have seen firsthand the devil in this disease and am passionate to help those who are suffering and their carers in any way I can. More than 66,000 people in Queensland have been diagnosed with dementia, which is now the second leading cause of death in Australia after heart disease according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. If you’d like to contribute to Fiona’s fundraising efforts for Alzheimers Australia (Qld), go to her everyday hero fundraising page: https://give.everydayhero.com/au/ raising-funds-for-alzheimer-s-whilst-feeding-my-appleadditi

Probus Club Update

by Pat van der Beek

Welcome to the October column of the Goodna/ Springfield Probus Club. Some of our members have been unwell with winter coughs and colds but, with the advent of the warmer weather, we hope that is all behind us. Local parks and gardens are looking colourful and the maggies are swooping, a sure sign that Spring has sprung! This month’s photo shows a group of us on our September outing: a bus trip to Bribie Island and a cruise around the beautiful Pumicestone Passage where we saw dolphins at play, dugongs feeding and a wide variety of bird life. On the same trip, we enjoyed a visit to the Bribie Community Arts Centre. Morning tea and lunch on board was appreciated as the salty breeze sharpened our appetites. A drama with the late unavailability of the booked bus gave organiser Andrew a headache but the matter was resolved and members enjoyed a very pleasant day. Special thanks to Andrew for planning this excursion. Our outing for October (now fully booked) will be a combined bus trip with Ipswich East Probus to the Twin Towns Services Club for the popular ‘Back to the Tivoli - Morning Melodies.’ A previous combined outing with this club was a great success and the new friendships we made will no doubt be consolidated on this trip. Thanks to Outings Officer Cathie who has planned a diverse range of activities for us to enjoy this year. Our guest speaker for September was a representative from Trade Travel who tempted us with some holiday ideas which included national and international travel by plane, ship and train. We learned that club holidays can be ‘designed’ to suit the interests of members and there are no hidden costs involved with this company. October’s guest speaker will be retired meteorologist Geoff Crane. Geoff has been involved in setting up tsunami warning systems for countries around the Indian Ocean. His topic will be ‘Tsunami Part 1’. October’s coffee morning is on Tuesday 18th October at 10am at Crema Espresso, Orion Shopping Centre. October’s lunch is on Wednesday, 26th October at 12pm at Spring Lake Hotel, Springfield Lakes. Probus is a club for retired and semi-retired men and women. Goodna/ Springfield Club holds meetings at 1.30 pm on the first Wednesday of the month in the Clubhouse at Bruce Lane, Camira, all welcome. Please contact Penny on 3818 7981 for further details.

I’m happy to report that last month construction commenced on the highly anticipated National Broadband Network (NBN) to almost 7,000 homes throughout Springfield, Springfield Lakes, Augustine Heights and Brookwater. I was delighted to stand with Mayor Paul Pisasale and Councillors David Morrison and Sheila Ireland to see firsthand the installation of the new infrastructure for our growing population. This important and vital service is long overdue for our region and since being elected, I’ve been working closely with the NBN Corporation to see that it is rolled out as quickly as possible. A fast and reliable internet connection is a necessity in this digital world to allow homes and businesses to access the web and connect with people all over the globe. Not only is it important for everyday activities like Facebook and Netflix, but it is also a key element to allow our local businesses to grow and prosper in the 21st century digital age. While there is still work to be done to bridge the digital divide in our region, I’m hopeful of seeing further inroads and having more people connected to the NBN in the near future. The NBN rollout was certainly one of the hot topics which received lots of feedback when I held my first mobile office at Orion Springfield recently. Over the coming months, I’ll be holding more mobile offices throughout the electorate and am keen to hear ideas and suggestions from the community on what is important to you. You can stay up to date on upcoming mobile office locations and everything else happening in the electorate at www.miltondick.com.au or feel free to call my office anytime on 3879 6440. Passion for reading pays off for St Augustine’s College students

Friday, 28 October Tickets $50.00 - $80.00 Revel in the best music of the 70s as Dragon take you on a journey through hit after hit

A passion for books and reading has paid off for five Year 7 and 8 students from St Augustine’s College, with the group recently taking out the State title in the 2016 Readers Cup. The Readers Cup is an event organised by the Queensland branch of the Children’s Book Council of Australia as a way of encouraging young people to read. The competition challenges students to read widely, work collaboratively in a team and continue developing a love of reading. It also allows readers to meet other students with an equal passion for books. The students - Phoebe Jackson, India Fitzgerald, Katelyn Smith, Jerica Nieva and Tegan Ludlow - were named the overall winners at the finals event held at the State Library on 7 September. The competition involved teams of students reading a set of books and then competing against other schools to answer quiz questions about the books. This year’s books included Goodbye Stranger by Rebecca Stead, Ugly by Robert Hoge and, A Single Stone by Meg MacKinlay. St Augustine’s College Teacher Librarian, Mrs Turner, praised the students for their efforts. “It was a very tough competition, with more than 600 schools from across Queensland participating,” Mrs Turner said. “The girls did an outstanding job with their answers and should be very proud of the amount of effort they put in.” Each of the girls received a pack containing books and book vouchers. The team also won a Flip camera for the College.

Dragons all girls team finals winners visit us ONLINE LNP.NET.AU

Local AFL club, the Forest Lake Dragons have enjoyed a finals win this season with their all girl team, not only taking the ultimate win but with their team captain being awarded two highly sought after medals. With many members from the greater Springfield area, this was the first year the Dragons had entered an all girls team in the Brisbane AFL Competition. The team lost only two games all season and went on to win the Grand Final last month. Proving that it was the year of girl power, captain of the team, Ashlee Sciortino was awarded the 2016 AFL Queensland’s Girls ‘Best and Fairest’ Award as well as the ‘O’Callaghan Medal’. The O’Callaghan Medal is awarded to the male or female U12-U18 player who received the most points via umpire votes each game. More than 2500 youngsters compete for this medal every year. By winning the O’Callaghan Medal, Ashlee made history as the medal has never before been won by a female. The Forest Lake Dragons are a valued member of the AFL Brisbane/Queensland Junior/Youth community and for the past 17 years have played a very active role in developing young boys and girls sport in greater Springfield and surrounds, Forest Lake, Richlands, Darra, Oxley and Inala area. With a dedicated and developing committee and strong volunteer base, the club has grown to 63 members, with committee members confident that the numbers will double next year. The Dragons are a not-for-profit sporting organization that promotes physical activity for children through coaching Australian Rules Football. Rotary recently committed an additional $35 million in grants to support the global effort to end polio, bringing Rotary’s contribution to $105 million in 2016. The announcement follows recent reports of three new cases of wild poliovirus in Nigeria: two cases in July, and one in August. The three cases are the first to be detected in Nigeria since July 2014. Rotary is acting to immunize children in Nigeria and countries in the Lake Chad Basin. Nearly a quarter of the funds Rotary announced will support the emergency response campaigns in this at-risk region, and last month Rotary provided $500,000 to immediately assist with the outbreak response. While significant strides have been made against the paralysing disease, with just 26 cases reported in 2016, polio remains a threat in hard-to-reach and underserved areas and conflict zones. “While we are disappointed with the recent news coming out of Nigeria, this situation underscores the extreme importance of widespread immunization campaigns and strong disease surveillance in all countries of the world until polio is fully eradicated,” said Michael McGovern, chair of Rotary’s International PolioPlus Committee. “This funding will help ensure that Rotary and our GPEI partners are doing all that we can to redouble our efforts and protect the progress in polio-free parts of the world, as well as stop transmission in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and now Nigeria.” Through 2018, every dollar Rotary commits to polio eradication will be matched twoto-one by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation up to $35 million a year. In addition to supporting the response in the Lake Chad Basin region, funding has been allocated to support polio eradication efforts in Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Somalia, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A final grant in the amount of $2.25 million will support key WHO staff. Rotary brings together a global network of volunteer leaders dedicated to tackling the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. Rotary connects 1.2 million members of more than 35,000 Rotary clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas. Their work improves lives at both the local and international levels, from helping families in need in their own communities to working toward a polio free world. The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield holds its meetings every Thursday evening at 6.30pm at the Brookwater Golf and Country Club, 1 Tournament Drive, Brookwater. For enquiries, contact Club President Chris Steinback on 0411 472 684.

Update by Pat Quickfall

On the first Wednesday of September, we had our meeting day with guest speaker Peter Walsh from the legal firm at Orion. Peter spoke about wills etc and it was a very interesting morning. It was family history day on 14 September, and we had some very interesting stories from our members. A morning of tasty food was enjoyed on 21 September as it was International Day. Members made food from their country of origin to bring along for everyone to taste. We all went home feeling rather full! Our cafe night was held on Friday 23 September. We had a bush dance with David Morrison as the caller and we enjoyed plenty of good food and dancing. What a good night! On 28 September, it was a games and pizza morning, which was enjoyed by all. The weather is beautiful with warm days and cool nights; such a lovely time of the year. If anyone is interested in joining, ring me on 3818 9343.

A message from the Mayor’s Desk BY THE MAYOR - PAUL PISASALE The Ipswich City Council Chat Time event, originally scheduled for early October at Orion Springfield Central will now be held on Saturday, 26 November. Residents are invited to the informal session at Gloria Jean’s Coffees from 9am to 11am. Chat Time gives people the opportunity to engage with councillors, share ideas and learn more about local projects. About one in 10 Ipswich households now have a new wheelie bin collection day. The changes were prompted by a citywide review of the collection of general, recycling and green waste. Council’s domestic waste collection service demands have increased since the last run changes were made in July 2011. Population growth means some service days have experienced substantial increases in the number of households requiring general, recycling and green waste wheelie bin services. The new schedule rebalances the workload by adjusting service days and recycling/green waste service weeks for some areas and adding more collection vehicles to the fleet. Community crime fighters will once again be acknowledged as part of a partnership program between council, Neighbourhood Watch, Crime Stoppers, Queensland Police and Scouts Australia. The Ipswich District Community Safety Crime Prevention Awards include categories for Community Engagement, Designing for a Safe and Healthy Environment, Drug and Alcohol Harm Reduction, Youth Engagement and Family Violence Prevention. We’re looking for people, organisations and businesses that take proactive steps to prevent and reduce crime in Ipswich. These actions help to build a community that doesn’t tolerate crime and violence and works together to help keep people safe. Nominations close on Monday, 31 October. Visit the council website for more information. I invite all Ipswich residents to take part in Day for Daniel on Friday, 28 October. The annual event will be held in the Ipswich Mall from 9am, with a breakfast, guest speakers and a public walk. Merchandise will be available on the day and all proceeds will support the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. The day highlights the importance of educating children and adults about keeping kids safe through child safety and protection initiatives and empowering our children to ‘Recognise, React and Report’ if they feel something is not right.

Would you like to become a Lion? The Lions Club of Greater Springfield are looking for people who would like to spend some time giving to the Greater Springfield community and contributing to upcoming community events. We are one of the oldest and largest voluntary organisations in the world and assist many people in our local area as well as helping with disaster funding around the globe. For example, this month alone we have donated over $2500 to assist two children with wheelchairs in our local district and provided funding to assist Redkite (a children’s cancer assistance organisation). We raise money by running meat tray raffles at the Spring Lake Hotel every Friday night, Bunnings BBQ’s, Harmony Day Cheesecake & Biscuit stall (come see us on the 15th of October!) and other raffles throughout the year. We meet twice a month (2-3 hours per month) and have a lot of fun in the process. All are welcome to sit in on our meetings to find out what we are about. Please contact us at gspringfieldlions@gmail.com or via our Facebook page www.facebook.com/greaterspringfieldlions/ if you would like further details.

THE CREATIVE heART by Jolanta Szymczyk As students from Springfield Lakes’ Hymba Yumba Indigenous School are getting ready for their final year exhibition, fashion show case and community event at Inspirations Ipswich art gallery, Ipswich City Mall, local Creative HeArt member, school art teacher Marty Nuku and myself are fine tuning the school’s exhibits, culminating in the schools grade 8-10 students involvement in a ‘Stepping Stones’ textile focus art program. Since last year, the students explored and dove into a range of textile focused techniques and practices to add an edge to their own creative program thanks to the Art Residency program. Students’ works are simply speaking for themselves...they are a great reflection of their local area, their own cultural roots and life journeys to date. As we go through the program, their designs are getting more complex and sophisticated. They learn different techniques and master new skills. We are thrilled to see their works going from strength to strength and stretching their own capabilities and exploring new dimensions, while at the same time being grounded in the life of our local community. “It’s exciting to see senior students use their own knowledge combined with contemporary expression to create a range of vibrant artworks that reflect their youthfulness, experience and aspirations. The energy surrounding this venture has been inspirational,” said Marty. Don’t miss this October’s upcoming event by emerging Hymba Yumba young artists! Join and celebrate these local talented young students who are walking proudly in their own creative pathways! The ‘Emergence’ Exhibition opens on 28 October and will be open until 4 November at Inspirations Ipswich Gallery, Ipswich. The opening night, which includes the Fashion Show and introduction to the exhibition, will start at 6.00pm and finish at 8.00pm. Free admission and all are welcome. For further enquiries please contact Marty Nuku at Hymba Yumba Community Hub, ph. 3381 8134 or martynuku@yahoo.com.au. And if you’re looking for local creative networks – don’t miss monthly Greater Springfield Creative HeART’s group meeting or perhaps investigate options of becoming exhibiting and gallery member of Inspiration Ipswich, a local artist co-operative. New members’ enquiries are welcome! Keep in touch via www.facebook.com/GSCreativeHub/.

Random act of kindness makes a huge impact It’s nice to receive flowers from friends and loved ones but the gift of flowers from a complete stranger is a sweet surprise. Dawn, who has severe COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and has been on oxygen 24 hours a day since September last year, was simply waiting in her wheelchair at Orion for her daughter to get her nails done. “It was the first time I’d been out without my husband since I’d recovered from pneumonia, so I was just sitting watching the people go by,” said Dawn. “I’d been sitting there for about 40 minutes when a beautiful young lady smiled at me, so, of course, I smiled back. “I didn’t think any more about it but about half an hour later, she came around behind me and placed a big bunch of flowers in my lap and said “Have a beautiful day”. “Before I could even say thank you, she was gone! Honestly, it brought me to tears, and still does when I think about it. What a wonderful thing for anyone to do but especially a stranger. “I want to say a big thank you to her. What a lovely lady she must be to do this beautiful and thoughtful gesture. It bought smiles and tears not only to me but my whole family when I told them. “I live in a retirement complex and people here were also amazed that a young lady would have thought to do this.” Dawn hopes that either the lady herself or someone who knows her reads this and knows what a huge impact it had on her. Random acts of kindness - do one today! Page 18 - October 2016 - The Greater Springfield Times

Carols @ Robelle Domain – Saturday 10th December The Orion Springfield Central Carols @ Robelle Domain presented by the Greater Springfield Combined Churches is planned for Saturday 10th December. Tim McCallum from The Voice will once again be singing. Book this date in your diary and plan to attend as we celebrate Christmas together as a community. Bad weather backup date is Saturday 17th December; pre Carols Entertainment from 5.30pm; food available from 5.30pm; program starting at 6.30pm. St Andrew’s Anglican Church St Andrew’s Springfield Anglican Church launched their regular Sunday Service this month. The Sunday service commences at 9am at The Springfield Anglican College Secondary Campus off Springfield Greenbank Arterial. Rev Charlie Lacey and his wife, Tisa and young family recently moved from England to serve the Greater Springfield community. We warmly welcome Charlie and Tisa and their family to our community. Christmas Lights Competition Nominations for the 2016 Ipswich Christmas Lights Competition open on Saturday 19 November. The competition will be run in partnership with radio station River 94.9 and there will be eight categories with the ‘Best Street’ carrying a major prize of $2000. Ipswich Cares Inc. 2016 Thank you to all who supported Ipswich Cares Inc 2016. This year Ipswich Cares Inc will help Compassion Australia, a school in Bali and an Ipswich Organisation that helps the needy. If you would like to give, please log on to www.coueelife.com/event/ipswich-cares-walk-run-2016/. Congratulations to all who walked from Rosewood to Springfield Central on 1 September, in particular to former Mayor John Nugent who completed the almost 50km walk at 81 years of age. NBN One of the frustrations that many residents express to me is their inability to connect to broadband. The NBN is currently being rolled out in many streets in Camira and the Greater Springfield area. Officers from NBN advised me that residents will be able to connect around May-June 2017. Spring Mountain I have been asked a few times about Spring Mountain. Spring Mountain is a brand new suburb that will be created with eventually 4000 residential dwellings. Lend Lease are marketing this development as Springfield Rise at Spring Mountain. Spring Mountain is on the opposite side of Sinnathamby Boulevard to Springfield Tower and Polaris. Kerbside Pickup Council’s next Kerbside Pickup is proposed for the months July to September 2017. Orion Lagoon As the warmer weather arrives it is good to see the Orion Lagoon being well utilised. Please remember all children 13 years or younger regardless of swimming ability must be supervised by an adult 18 years of older. If a child is unsupervised Life Guards are in their right to ask them to leave the water. Let’s hope the Orion Lagoon always has happy memories for all. Library Council does have plans to build a permanent library in Springfield Central between Orion Lagoon and Orion Springfield Central. Until this permanent library is constructed, remember Council’s mobile Library visits Springfield Central on Southern Cross Circuit every Thursday and every second Wednesday and the Camira Springfield Community Centre every second Wednesday. It is hoped and planned that at least one in three people who live in the Greater Springfield area also work in the same area.

Springfield Tower and Polaris Data Centre under construction in 2007. In 2005, Council and Springfield Land Corporation signed a very important agreement in that Sinnathamby Boulevard would be constructed as four lanes from the start. This has proved to be a wise decision due to the number of vehicles that utilise Sinnathamby Boulevard each day.

Somerwil, Branch President nt

Welcome to National Seniors Goodna/Redbank Branch update for October. Last month our branch members enjoyed several activities including the coffee club morning at the Windy Café at Camira, which we felt was most appropriately named as we sat outside on the verandah enjoying our coffee and cake. Then there was the shared trip with the Ipswich NSA branch to the very interesting Beenleigh Rum distillery followed by lunch at the local pub. The guest speaker for the September branch meeting ABC weather news reader, Jenny Woodward unfortunately had to cancel due to unexpected work commitments, but she has re-scheduled her presentation for the October meeting. On Tuesday 20th September the branch held its ordinary branch meeting, the Annual General Meeting followed by a catered lunch. We were able to arrange to have guest speakers Sue and Vic from the Bayview Towers at Yeppoon speak before the two meetings. Unfortunately at the Annual General Meeting, nominations were not received for the Management Committee positions. Hence a special meeting has been called by the Public Officer, Val Randle to determine future directions. This meeting will be held on Tuesday 18th October, Goodna Leagues Club, Brisbane Terrace, Goodna commencing at 10am. It is intended to have our guest speaker first. For further information please contact Val Randle, Branch Secretary on 3297 5735.

The Greater Springfield VIEW Club Update

by Robyne Apps

The first night meeting in September for the Greater Springfield VIEW Club welcomed the Season of Spring with the ladies bringing a flower to the meeting, including the VIEW rose, azaleas, frangipanis, nasturtiums etc and sharing a gardening moment, including photos. Our October meeting will be a night meeting on Wednesday 26 October at Councillor David Morrison’s community meeting room, corner Woodcrest Way and Commercial Drive, Springfield from 6.30pm to 9pm. The theme for the night will be to bring along your favourite recipe and tell us why it’s your favourite! The ladies provided positive feedback on their attendance at the recent VIEW Area Literary Lunch held at The Glen Hotel with Brisbane author Pat Noad. Details were given of the Zone Thanksgiving and Christmas Service to be held on Wednesday 30 November at The Glen Hotel, Eight Mile Plains at 11am, RSVP by 27 October. The ladies are looking forward to being part of the Christmas Wrapping activities to support The Smith Family in December. This activity supports 11 Learning for Life students from our area. You are welcome to attend our next meeting on 26 October to learn more about the work of VIEW Clubs in Australia who support The Smith Family, please RSVP to reapps@bigpond.com by 24 October.
