The Greater Springfield Run for Life, the area’s premier fitness and community event, was again a resounding success with 800 runners participating across the four events. The winner of the newly added 10km race was Jackson Elliot, with a time of just 30: 32. It was a tight finish though, with Hintsa Mebrahtu coming just 25 seconds shy of first place. In the 5km race, Hintsa Mebrahtu claimed his right to be called the winner, with a time of 15 minutes and 10 seconds. Clare Geraghty was the first female home in both the 10km and 5km races; with times of 36: 43, and 17:50 respectively. Among the corporate teams that participated in the 5km race, Springfield Christian Family came first, with ME Fitness finishing second. And then in the fierce but fun Battle of the Banks, Heritage Bank came first, CBA was second and Suncorp came third. Greater Springfield Run for Life also added a 2km dog walk this year, and that proved to be another popular addition to the day’s line-up. Organisers, Westside Community Care (WCC), estimate that about $15 000 was raised for dedicated WCC projects and five chaplaincy services in the area.

Personally Speaking
By Susannah Friis with Susannah Friis
I think you would all agree we have been enjoying exceptionally balmy weather of late and now that September is here, and the arrival of Spring is upon us, there is the change in the air. Traditionally, we look to the start of a new year for new beginnings and implementing changes in our lives, yet the start of a new season, particularly Spring when renewal and new life is so evident, is also a perfect time to see if modifications need to be made. Change is something that we often fight against. Even if we aren’t happy with the way things are, we are wary of things being different. We are more comfortable with the status quo because it’s familiar to us; it’s what we know. Setting about making changes involves a risk - it may not go as we thought it would, people may not do or say what we thought they would. The thing is, people and circumstances are beyond our control, and that is what makes us really baulk at big changes in our lives. The adage that ‘the only certain thing is that things will change’ couldn’t be truer, however much we dislike the notion. Even when we think we are standing still, resisting change, we are really fooling ourselves. The whole of life must change, renew and regenerate, otherwise, it ceases to be life. Without change, things die. And that’s true for us too. Our relationships, our careers, our personalities must all undergo change in order to survive. And we must learn to adapt and go with the flow too. We are constantly telling our youngest daughter that ‘Flo’ is spending the day with us when she wants to know every single detail of every single days events. “Just go with Flo!” we cry. “I hate Flo!” she cries in reply. Learning to go with the flow is an important part of successful living. Imagine if the plants and animals around us refused to submit to the changes of the seasons? If the blossoms refused to bloom simply because they didn’t want it to be Spring yet? Likewise, we need to submit ourselves to the ebb and flow of life. And Spring is the ideal time to throw off the shackles of this particularly wet winter and breathe in the new life that’s on the winds of Spring. Won’t you join me in embracing all the joy and freshness of a new season by dusting off our routines and ruts and turning toward new things? What could you do that you’ve always wanted to do? What opportunities are awaiting you if you step outside your door and explore the new buds all around you? Isn’t it time to change? To renew and rejuvenate ourselves? Doesn’t it put a Spring (pun intended!) in your step to think of all the new and glorious possiblities ahead? It does for me!

Happiness is probably the most important feeling in our lives. We either bask in it when we have it, or miss it (and go looking for it) when we don’t. Either way, most people believe that it’s just another emotion that comes and goes, and we can’t make it happen. However, findings from research over the last decade have shown that there is much more to this positive state than meets the eye. Happiness is more than a measure of personal wellbeing – it is a crucial factor for physical health; it determines our work performance and success; it has a direct impact on the quality of our relationships; and it underpins a healthy community. At the physiological level, negative emotions have been found to hurt immune, cardiovascular, and endocrine functioning. Happy people on average tend to be healthier. They have healthier immune, endocrine, and cardiovascular systems, and have fewer illnesses and accidents. Happy people have better social relationships, which are more trusting, supportive, respectful, helpful, and cooperative. And families that work towards building happy relationships are less likely to fall apart. Happy people work better with others so output is increased, conflict decreased, and new ideas more likely to happen. Businesses that actively promote work satisfaction and happiness in their staff are more productive. Happy people are also better citizens and build the “social capital” of the community and the nation. They donate more money to charities, give more volunteer time to worthy causes, and are more accepting of others who are different. Lack of happiness is bad for overall health and levels of functioning. People who are depressed, fearful, and angry for long periods of time have problems with health, poor relationships with family and friends, and are not good citizens at their workplace or in the community, and often isolate themselves or actively engage in harmful or antisocial activities. It is important to remember that happy people occasionally do feel unhappy. But they approach negative emotions differently. For example, if someone has upset them, they are more likely to take action to deal with the situation in a way that rebuilds the relationship. Or if an event has caused pain or distress, they are more likely to look for the “silver lining” or blessings arising from the situation. They typically spend less time worrying about the cause of their unhappiness, and more time exploring ways to move forward. And they typically take a bigger picture view of situations causing bad feelings, for example, using a personal life event to become actively involved in changing the world for the better rather than focusing only on their personal responses. Life coaching is a great way to learn to manage your own happiness more effectively, to learn techniques for reducing the impact of bad emotions, and strengthen the good ones like happiness.

Despite being just 44 years old, Hennessy is somewhat of a veteran when it comes to Masters Games, competing in various Games’ quite successfully since 2002. An active man, Hennessy began his Masters Games career with rugby, before adding indoor rowing to his repertoire. Threatening his active lifestyles, a serious back injury in 2011 saw him destined for a career on the sidelines. “It was one of those 1 in 10,000 chance accidents,” said Hennessy. “I came off my bike in the wet and landed on my back on the edge of a concrete strip. “I spent four weeks on my back, and then underwent three months of intensive rehab and physiotherapy. It was honestly the worst pain I’ve ever felt, and I felt so helpless.” Through grit, determination and a lot of support from family and friends, Hennessy was back playing rugby and rowing at the 2012 Pan-Pacific Games, just eight months later. Highlighting the benefits of that determination, he has won a multitude of medals over the years, including a silver medal in each of the 500m, 1000m and 2000m indoor rowing events at the previous Australian Masters Games in Adelaide in 2011. Hennessy is hoping for gold this time around, but admits it isn’t all about winning. “Catching up with some of the people I’ve met along the way is something I most look forward to. It’s like a yearly reunion, you see the same old faces.” Over 8,000 participants are expected to descend on Geelong for the week-long event, beginning on Saturday 5th October. The Australian Masters Games encompasses over 50 sports for men and women ranging from athletics, cycling and golf through to ultimate frisbee and drilldance. The only pre-requisite for competing is that participants meet the minimum age criteria, which in most sports is 30 years. As well as competing in their chosen sport, the Games offer participants a fun-filled social program, including an opening and closing ceremony, and festival-like atmosphere throughout the week. Don’t forget to bring the family down to Robelle Domain on September 22 when the twilight markets and the Battle of the Bands competition team up to create a wonder filled night for all ending with a spectacular fireworks display at 7pm. On stage, seven bands will battle it out for the title of “Best Band for 2013” in the Battle of the Bands contest. Last year’s winner was Josh Morrison & the Mystery Crew. Ps. Phil Cutcliffe from Westside Community Care said although the event was a free one, money would be raised for USQ Chaplaincy Services and Springfield Christian Family through the various sponsors, and other fund raising activities like food sales. There would also be an opportunity to make a donation of a gold coin or any other amount during the course of the afternoon. The bands will deliver their trial performances between 3pm and 5.30, and the top three would then perform in the final from 5.30pm until 7pm. The proceedings will also incorporate a speaker and performances from local Springfield Christian Family worship team. In addition to the light festival, the markets, and the music, there would also be free rides and activities such as jumping castles for the kids. Ps. Phil said it was anticipated that between 10 000 and 12 000 people would make their way through Robelle Domain during the course of the festival. Anyone interested in sponsoring the event could also call Ps. Phil on 0411 021 153. For enquiries about the markets, or interest in being a stall holder, please contact Vicki on 0438 187 545 or email markets@robelle.com.au

It’s a great time to be living in Springfield with some major announcements for the region over the past month. In a massive coup for the Ipswich area, the Brisbane Lions have announced they will develop a new elite training and administration facility adjacent to the new Springfield Central Station. This is tremendous news for the Ipswich region and the location is the ideal choice for such a facility. The proposed development site will bring the club’s training to one single venue throughout the year, making it easy for fans to attend training with the new passenger rail station right next door. Home games will still be at the Gabba, only 25 minutes away. The other major news was GE Australia’s announcement to move its headquarters to Springfield with a new $72 million building which is already under construction. The new headquarters is due to be completed in 2015 and will house 1200 staff. Ipswich is one of the fastest growing cities in Australia and securing these major investments from the Brisbane Lions and GE Australia is a further boost in confidence for our city.

Is singing your passion? SPRINGFIELD LAKES
For local vocalist, musician and teacher Angela Burdett, bringing music to the community and encouraging them to be involved is a passion. Leading the Jacaranda Jam choir, Angela and members of the choir regularly perform locally at community functions and retirement villages and have recently been seen at Palm Lake Resort, Redbank Plains, Oak Tree Retirement Village, Goodna and entertaining participants at the local Senior Citizen’s week luncheon. “I have a great passion for community music and community singing in particular,” said Angela. “I truly believe that the human voice joined together in song has an amazing ability to heal and empower us and to increase our general health and well-being.” And she’s not alone with a choir that spans performers aged from eight years old to eighty. The choir has been asked to perform again at this year’s Carols at the Robelle parklands. The choir and students from Angela’s music school, Soul Singing, have also provided carols at Gailes Community House for the past several years and look forward to doing so again this year. Jacaranda Jam meet every Tuesday during school terms at Oak Tree Village, Brennan Street Goodna between 10am – noon and entry is by gold coin donation. The choir is a great place to meet new friends, have a laugh and enjoy a good sing. Everyone is welcome, no experience is necessary and no auditions are required. The choir will shortly be starting to brush up it’s Christmas repertoire as well as working on some new pieces for concerts early in 2014. The choir also host quarterly Supper ‘n Sing evenings held at Langely Hall in Camira. Amongst the themes so far have been Christmas in July, an 80’s night, a 60’s night and a music trivia night. These evenings allow choir members, family, friends and the local community to come together and share an evening of fun and singing and run the range of ages in participants with babies, toddlers and children right through to some of the more senior citizens. The next Supper ‘n Sing night will be held early in the new year. Angela will be holding a workshop at the Springfield Lakes YMCA on Saturday 12th October from 1pm – 4.30pm at a nominal cost of $15. The workshop will cover basic elements of music theory and sight singing as well as an overview of the singing voice and how it works. There will be handouts and information on vocal technique and warmups and of course an opportunity to have a bit of a sing. To find out more, please contact Angela on 0411 460 337.

The Isuzu Queensland Open was held at Brookwater Golf and Country Club last month with the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland as the beneficiary. The Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland used ‘Team Tap’ a mobile phone app whcih allows participants to ‘tap’ the phones of those around them, with each tap raising money for blood cancer patients and their families. There were more than 25,000 ‘Team Taps’ which raised $5,000 which was generously donated by Golf Queensland. Another $935 was raised by the Pro-Am’s raffle and an additional $1,300 was raised by Isuzu at the Brisbane Truck Show raffle. The total amount raised for the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland was $7,235. Participants, which included locals, golfing enthusiasts and dignitaries all enjoyed a great day out while raising funds for a worthy cause.

We’ve had a wonderful month with Cr David Morrison as our first guest speaker for the month. He gave us a very interesting talk about the new Railway Line coming to Springfield and Springfield Central which opens this year. He also told us we had more parking space at Springfield Central which is what we needed. We enjoyed having David at the club. On Wednesday the 21st August we had a high tea at the club house for seniors week. Most of the members made cakes and sandwiches also thank you to the ladies in the kitchen and everyone else who helped - the presentation was lovely. On Wednesday the 28th August we had a bus trip to the Port of Brisbane. We had morning tea at the main building on the 7th floor from which we could see all the islands - Stradbroke, Mud Island and St Helena. It was such a lovely day. After morning tea, it was back on the bus and a guided tour, making for a very interesting morning. Then it was on to the Redland Bay social Club where we all enjoyed a lovely Buffet lunch. Anyone interested in joining our club can ring Val on 3288 2689 or Pat on 3818 9343. Page 10 - September 2013 - The Greater Springfield Times

The culmination of months of rehearsals, set and costume development paid off for the students at The Springfield Anglican College who performed their 2013 College Musical Production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I to enthusiastic audiences of over 600 throughout the three shows. The stage and performers transformed during the show with a fantastic array of set designs and costumes taking audiences back in time to 1832 to the Royal Palace in Bangkok, Siam. Excitement on Opening Night was evident and the actors, dancers and orchestra did not disappoint their awaiting audience. Shows on Friday and Saturday proved equally up to the task. ‘The Small House of Uncle Thomas’ was a highlight for audiences with students relishing the opportunity to perform the well-known and beautiful dance routines. Producer/Musical Director, Dr. Philippa Robinson states that participation in a musical is one of the most treasured memories one can have well into adult life. All the performers, crew, musicians, staff and parents will certainly treasure the memories of this production for many years to come. “The personal and professional growth of our students on this 26 week journey was an absolute joy to experience,” said Dr Robinson. “Pure magnificence! It was a pleasure to watch so many talented students own the stage,” said Musical Director, Mrs Danielle Lennon. Head of College, Mr Steve Croft was thrilled to see the end result of many months of hard work from students and staff alike. “The musical was a great achievement for all involved – the students’ performances were as vivid a portrayal as the original The King and I from 1951. I am very proud of the achievements of our students and staff involved. “A production of this undertaking requires a great deal of hard work, long hours of rehearsal, costuming, set design, advertising and coordination. I congratulate all students, and the many staff and parents involved for their dedication and commitment to this year’s Musical,” said Mr Croft.
From the elegant sophisticated style of Fred Astaire, to the new grooves and beats of today, both genres are extremely fun, and are performed to a variety of music. Jazz and Tap teaches students rhythm, strength, musical awarenss, discipline and enjoyment.

Heartworm disease and your pet
Heartworm has long been recognised as a potentially deadly disease in dogs but did you know that your cat is also susceptible to this disease? Mosquitos are responsible for the spread of heartworm to both cats and dogs. There is a common misconception that dogs that do not leave their house or yard are safe from heartworm. This is not true, unless of course you are 100% certain that the house and yard are free from mosquitoes at all times. The number of dogs in Brisbane that are not on preventative treatments and are carrying the disease is increasing all the time. If one of these infected dogs lives in your neighbourhood, and your dog or cat is not protected, there is a very high chance that your pet will also develop the disease. Heartworm is a long thin roundworm which makes its home on the right chamber of the heart and surrounding blood vessels. Not long after infection, the adult worms begin causing damage to the lining of the blood vessels and also the lung tissue. If there is enough of them, they can actually block the overflow of blood from the heart, or wrap themselves around a valve. Needless to say this can have disastrous consequences! Unfortunately for the cat as few as two heartworms can create enough damage to internal organs for death to occur. Clinical signs that may be seen in both the dog and cat include coughing, tiredness, difficulty breathing, fatigue and collapse. In dogs, the disease can be diagnosed with a blood test and, depending on the result, prevention or treatment is administered. This is not to say that the treatment of heartworm disease is not without its perils! A much simpler way is to prevent this disease in the first place. The oldest preventative treatment was in the form of daily tablets but is now superseded with monthly tablets that may also treat your pets for intestinal worms and control fleas as well. Yearly heartworm injection is the most reliable and most convenient way of prevention for dogs. If your dog has missed any heartworm medication, a heartworm blood test may need to be performed before starting a new cycle. Heartworm infection in cats is harder to diagnose than it is in dogs and it is easy to overlook. Diagnostic tests have limitations, so negative test results do not necessarily rule out an infection. For cats, the most convenient way of prevention is to use medication in liquid form applied on the skin once a month. If you would like more information on heartworm disease prevention, please contact your nearest Greencross Vet for advice prior to starting any medication. Probus Club Update by Pat van der Beek Well, here we are, well over half way through 2013, whatever happened to the last eight months? It is certainly true that the years seem to go faster as we grow older but even our grandchildren are expressing surprise at how quickly this year is whizzing by. Planning is well underway for the Goodna/Springfield Probus Christmas party at the end of November and, once we start organising Christmas parties, we know the year is pretty well over.

This month’s picture shows some of our members enjoying a ‘Christmas in July’ function at Boonah Bowls Club; a pleasant ‘Christmas’ lunch in a festive atmosphere after an enjoyable country drive. August’s outing was to the new Tennis Centre at Tennyson where we followed our well-informed guide on a fascinating and fact-filled tour of the Centre. This was followed by a meal at the Yeronga RSL. During August, we also met for lunch at the Spring Lakes Hotel; an outing which proved so popular that we plan to repeat it in September, this time adding an afterlunch walk around the lakes to the schedule. Later this month, we will meet at the cinema (probably at Redbank Plaza) to catch a movie and perhaps enjoy lunch at one of the restaurants. All members are welcome and potential members are encouraged to contact Gaye on the number below for details. Finally don’t forget our coffee mornings at Robelle Domain, Springfield Parklands, on the third Friday of each month. September’s speaker was Henny Allen who shared information on ‘Young People and Court Proceedings’. Henny’s talk was well received and, for many of us, shed new light on the issues surrounding young people who find themselves in the court system in Queensland. October’s speaker will be Deanne Lawrie from Seniors Enquiry Line. We would like to issue a cordial invitation to all retired and semi-retired local people to consider joining us. There is no charge for your first meeting and you are under no obligation to join. Interested? Your first step is to ring Gaye on 3818 8765 or join us at 1.30pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Camira Friends and Neighbours Clubhouse in Bruce Lane (cnr Langley Road), Camira.

With the scent of frangipani flowers mingling with incense from temple offerings, inviting beaches stretching into the distance, green rice terraces stacked up into the hills in serene formations, and colourful traditional temple processions at regular intervals, Bali is simply magical. Whether you’re having a relaxing massage under a thatched beach hut, soaking in a spa or coming face to face with Komodo dragons, Bali holidays stay with you forever. In Bali, you can dive with schools of tropical fish, then surf, swim and sun yourself all day. Stock up on peanuts at Ubud’s Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary and have them stolen out of your hand by the cheeky critters, then lose yourself in the local art galleries. The Balinese are the best beauticians, so be sure to get a vigorous spa treatment on the beach. Eating in Bali is a joy. Seafood fans shouldn’t miss the legendary grilled platters in beachfront Jimbaran. In artsy village Ubud, Ibu Oka Warung is the place to taste the tempting suckling pig, a Balinese speciality, and there are tasty duck dishes galore at Bebek Bengil where you can eat in little bamboo huts. For a bit of Mexican/Indonesian flavour, check out TJs in Kuta and explore Seminyak’s for glitzy bars. We at Escape travel Brookwater have travelled extensively throughout Bali and can offer advice on the best way to get to a destination, where to stay, things to do and see there and even the best bars and restaurants to eat and drink at. Simply come and see us at Escape Travel Brookwater, located at Shop T7 Brookwater Village and we will work with you to plan the perfect Balinese holiday escape. If it is more convenient to do it over the phone please call us direct on 1300 367 490. Scouts place second in overnight adventure
Six Scouts from the Camira Scout Group recently participated in Operation Nighthawk, an overnight hike activity for Scouts and Venturers during August. The Scouts, led by their Patrol Leader, Lachlan, achieved fantastic success in the event by tying second place out of 141 scout patrols. Operation Nighthawk, held near Pittsworth, has grown to be the largest scouting youth activity, other than Jamborees, in Queensland. It is supported by Scouts and Venturer Scouts from Queensland and Northern NSW. The Patrol, whose ages ranged from 11 to 13 years, hiked for around six hours overnight to activity bases in the bush where their leadership and technical skills such as construction, first aid, knotting, mapping, estimation and environment were scored. Camira Scout Group has vacancies in all sections for Joey Scouts (6-8 years), Cub Scouts (7-11 years), Scouts (10-15 years). The Venturer Scouts (14-18 years) and Rover Scouts (18-26 years) meet as part of the Woogaroo District. For more information on how you can join Camira Scout Group as a Youth Member or Leader, please contact Assistant Group Leader, Stephanie Beekman on 0401 395 408 or Greg Broad, District Commissioner on 0414 494 389.

Three of Rotary’s newest clubs, Rotary Club of Brisbane Rocks Riverside, Brisbane Taylor Bridge partnering with the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield (prov) will join forces to raise funds to support Rotary’s two great programmes the Australian Rotary Health and the Rotary Foundation. If you are a business or individual who wishes to assist your new energetic local Rotary club in this venture, please contact our secretary. Advanced Beauty
with Thea Soons Advanced Skin Care Clinic
Hello, my name is Thea Soons. If you are familiar with, or thinking about, cosmetic injectables then I encourage you to read on. As we know, nothing remains the same forever. A more accurate phase could not be applied to the beauty/cosmetic industry. In the last 18 years, I and the rest of Australia have seen some dramatic changes, and there are more to come! I am the owner and operator of Advanced Skin Care Clinic, in Jindalee, a n d h a v e k n o w n D r. Andrew Molloy, a wellknown cosmetic dentist from Kenmore, for 16 years. Our discussions over coffee one day resulted in us realising that, not only did our services compliment each other, but that we could offer a brand new approach to cosmetic enhancement. I have been a specialist in face and skin care for over 40 years, and Andrew has been a cosmetic dentist for 30 years. Andrew is a rare breed of dentist. Having undertaken training in the UK and with the Australian Academy of DentoFacial Aesthetics, he has the intricate knowledge and experience to know that “complete facial aesthetics” is more than just a wrinkle free face, or a great smile, or beautiful teeth. It’s about balance. We all know that ‘relaxants’ and ‘fillers’ are not new to the industry, however, the techniques and protocols now employed to maximise results and longevity are. By working together, we are able to offer people the opportunity to talk to a dentist in a totally different environment, in the peaceful surroundings of a skin clinic, which could completely eliminate dental phobia. Andrew and I are well aware that todays’ clients are well researched, well-read and savvy. And that they seek out professional high quality services from well-known professionals. They demand the best with long lasting results and this is what we specialise in. In all my 40 years as a skin specialist, I have never come across two skins that are exactly the same therefore they shouldn’t be treated as such, hence the introduction of our Prescriptive Speciality Treatment service, which addresses client’s problems and concerns on an individual basis. In the one treatment we now integrate a combination of therapies to ensure that at each stage, every client achieves their optimum result with maximum longevity. If, at the post-treatment consultation stage, it’s considered the ‘balance’ needs tweaking, then the tweaking is on us – such is our commitment to customer satisfaction. As for the results - if our clients are ecstatic, then we’re happy too.

St Augustine’s College celebrates 10 years On Friday 30 August, St Augustine’s College community welcomed back His Grace, Most Reverend Archbishop Mark Coleridge to preside over a special Mass, themed ‘Celebrating 10 Years’. “Whilst ten years is a relatively short period, especially compared to schools who celebrate 150 years this year, ours is a big story by any account and one that is worth celebrating,” stated Foundation Principal Mr Leon Capra in his speech of acknowledgement following the Mass. Mr Capra and foundation students, Jordan Sellers and Kesharni Goonewardene, opened the recently exhumed time capsule, finding interesting artefacts from 2003. After the Mass, foundation students and selected staff invited Fr Peter Wieneke to unveil and bless a new piece of art called The Value Pillars. Bearing the Augustinian values of Veritas (Truth), Unitas (Unity), and Caritas (Love), this artwork has been installed outside the main office and was commissioned as a special art project to celebrate 10 years of St Augustine’s College. “By placing this very visible representation of the values at the front of the College, it is hoped that their influence will strengthen and benefit all students, families and staff of the St Augustine’s community today and into the future,” Paul Blom (Assistant Principal Religious Education) commented. Together with Paul Blom, teachers Leonie Clark, Paul McNamara, Troy O’Bree and Support Teacher Jeff Forman planned, developed and installed the Value Pillars. The Mass was a fitting end to a wonderful week of celebrations and activities to mark the college’s 10th

Anniversary. Throughout the week, staff and students alike participated in the annual ‘StAC Week’ to celebrate St Monica’s Feast day (St Augustine’s mother) and St Augustine’s Feast day with activities such as a picnic lunch, reading rug, and buddy activities.

Councillor’s Comments by Cr Sheila Ireland (Division 9) 3810 6231 or Div9Office@ipswich.qld.gov.au I look forward to welcoming the 1200 GE Australia staff members to Springfield Central when they open their new headquarters. Congratulations GE Australia for the decision to move to one of south east Queensland’s fastest growing regions. The new $72 million office will be completed by 2015. A local resident has been passionate about the parks around the Springfield Lakes area and has requested fencing in some instances. I am happy to advise that Lakes Entrance Park at Springfield Lakes will have pool style fencing installed to the surrounds of the playground with two entry gates. Work is scheduled to commence this month and will take approximately four weeks. There is a strong women’s network in the Western Corridor called the Westside Business Women’s Inc and they recently held a business breakfast for women running home businesses to help them network and some very good information was shared across the table. More morning meetings are planned with a different starting time to help mothers with young children attend. For more information email info@westsidebusinesswomen.com. I am sure families are looking forward to the school holidays and Council has partnered with community organisations to provide some great fun so check out Council’s website for details. Applications are now open for the Ipswich Youth and Indigenous Youth Advisory Councils for young people aged between 12 and 17. The youth councillors pledge two years, which starts in February, and meetings are held at Council’s Humanities Building between 4.30pm and 6pm every second week. NATIONAL SENIORS UPDATE
Goodna/Redbank Branch by Vera
Somerwil, Branch President
Welcome to the Spring edition item from the Goodna-Redbank National Seniors Branch. The Branch meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the Goodna Leagues Club, Brisbane Terrace, 9.30am for 10.00am. Seniors Week 2013 was a very busy time for the branch with the coach tour to the King Ludwigís Restaurant at Maleny, where a great meal was enjoyed by all, there was a fair bit of frivolity afterwards. The other event locally was the Ipswich Councilís sponsored concert, Down by the River at the Frank Mc Greavey Function Centre. This function was organized by three local seniors clubs with local talent. The introduction from the Goodna State School Choir, was just great and set the pace for the rest of the morning. So now we put Seniors Week away for anther year and move on. The 17th September Branch meeting will be followed by the AGM, guest speaker will be Mark Furness, Membership Manager for National Seniors, he will bring everyone up to date with happenings in the organization and then members will be invited to enjoy a light luncheon. On Wednesday 2nd October, Coffee Club members will meet at Toscaniís, Orion Shopping Centre at Springfield. Members driving into the centre will have an opportunity to see the new Springfield railway station which is nearing completion. Guest speaker for the 15th October branch meeting will be Jeff Crane from the Bureau of Meteorology. He will give us a better understanding of how the weather is predicted and mapped. Visitors are always welcome. Contact Val on 3297 5735.

The Greater Springfield Times and Local News Publications covers over 30 suburbs south-west of the Brisbane CBD together with the community publications of the Centenary News, The Lake News and The Local News.
Building better communities through communication Delivered FREE to households
700,000 more are being cared for at home by family and friends, often with limited support. Why? If you, or a loved one, were to suffer an accident or illness that left you, or them, in need of full-time care, there are currently few alternatives for care and housing available. Youngcare works to change this by building more age appropriate housing; financially assisting through At Home Care Grants; and providing information and advice through the Youngcare Connect hotline. Every young person deserves a young life and you can help create change by visiting www.youngcare.com.au/donate
