Get to know our new Parks and Rec Director, Christina Jaromay
Christina Jaromay received her Bachelor’s from California State University Sacramento, in Applied Ethics in Law with a minor in Business Management. She started her parks career 11 years ago at California State Parks where she most recently created and led the Partnership Division. She oversaw programs such as concessions, cooperating associations, corporate sponsorships and volunteers generating more than $100M collectively in revenue and in-kind services annually. Prior to the Partnerships Division, Christina worked in the Acquisition and Development Division, managing the division’s contracts unit, including public works and architectural and engineering services for major developments. Prior to working for the state, Christina worked in technology and marketing fields working internationally and with clients in the General, Hispanic and LGBTQ markets.
Q: Why did you want to come to Lodi and lead the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department and what goals do you have for the department?
A: Parks have always been special to me. Growing up, my family did not have much money and parks became our family vacation spots – places to recreate, places we felt we were okay to just be. We would drive across the country visiting the redwoods, camping, sightseeing, learning about significant historical places and playing in the ocean. Today my husband and I carry on this tradition with our two girls. We love hiking, kayaking, camping and being in nature. I feel that coming to Lodi to lead the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department will be very rewarding as I will get to work closely with the Lodi community. I look forward to continuing the effort to create a sustainable park system for Lodians and future generations to enjoy through advancement of funding and partnership opportunities, supporting the great efforts of PRCS’ staff,
maintaining and improving park facilities, and developing programming to ensure all community members feel their local parks are high-quality, diverse and have a feeling of inclusivity. Local parks, indoor recreation and outdoor spaces are important to our physical and mental health. This has become especially apparent this past year with the pandemic. Neighborhood parks are more important than we can imagine. They’re places for adults and children to feel a place of belonging, a place to feel safe and included. My girls played tennis, soccer, volleyball, danced ballet and tap, acted in plays and musicals and joined a youth cheer program where their teams won national championships. I know that these experiences have shaped who they are today – confident young women and leaders among their peers. Through the years we collectively have made strides to ensure everyone feels safe and welcomed in their parks. However we have much more to do and I know that we can do it together.
