Lastly, an immense thank you must go out to our parks maintenance crews who have not slowed down even when the pandemic halted programming and limited the use of park amenities. Our parks were still maintained and cared for, because they did not close – especially our beloved and highly visited Lodi Lake Park. In addition, due to budget constraints, our park teams were asked to do more with fewer resources. Please be sure to give them a wave and a distanced high-five when you see them out in the parks – they will greatly appreciate the gesture! Enjoy your parks once again!

DI O

Although we must still appropriately, physically distance, and are not yet back to pre-pandemic operational levels, the goal is get there by the end of the year. You will note that our indoor programs, events and services at Hutchins Street Square are missing from this guide; however, the indoor pool is approved to open with modifications. The facility has been approved to serve as a mass vaccination clinic through July or August.

Telling a group of parks and recreation geeks NOT to program and activate parks and public spaces with healthminded, fun stuff to do (vs canceling everything due to a worldwide pandemic)…is like telling an artist not to paint or sculpt or sing or dance. As we collectively emerge from the worst public health crisis of modern times, we are thrilled to be offering most of our traditional programs and even some new offerings (youth sports, camps, summer swim league, swim lessons, the beach, water fitness, etc.).

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR PARK SYSTEM

R PA

Spring has sprung and we are thrilled to be welcoming everyone back into our parks, onto the fields and courts, and into the water for some traditional spring/summer fun! It goes without saying that 2020 was difficult, however, our excitement over the ability to begin reinstating programs and services has now reached jubilation and joyousness!

Brian M. Stocker Fund Grant Award makes a Big Splash!

In early 2020, Lodi’s Parks and Recreation Aquatics programs received a generous 10-year, $25K per year grant award from the Brian M. Stocker Fund to benefit and support long-term participation among economically disadvantaged youth. This partnership is made possible through The Community Foundation of San Joaquin. With operating delays from last year well behind us, PRCS is eager to finally put this substantial grant award into action. This partnership between Lodi Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services and The Community Foundation of San Joaquin is the largest and first-of-its-kind philanthropic partnership for the Brian M. Stocker Fund. As envisioned, over the next 10 years, this partnership will provide vital funding for swim lessons and lifeguard training for low-income youth, scholarships for children to participate in the summer swim league, monthly free swim days at Lodi Lake Beach, a sensory swim program for disabled children and young adults, and title sponsorship of the city’s annual summer swim championships.

“The Community Foundation of San Joaquin is delighted to partner with the City of Lodi to support its aquatics program,” said Moses Zapien, CEO of The Community Foundation of San Joaquin. “Through the generosity of the Brian M. Stocker Fund, The Community Foundation has been able to make targeted investments throughout the county to improve the quality of life of children and youth by increasing recreational opportunities and promoting healthy living.” Brian M. Stocker, who died in 2010 at the age of 48, eight years after a life-altering automobile accident, passionately believed in youth athletics as a catalyst for instilling leadership skills, personal responsibility, teamwork, fair play and healthy living. Compelled to establish a legacy to fulfill his goals, Brian left the bulk of his significant estate for the express purpose of establishing a permanent charitable fund to support local organizations and initiatives aligned with his interests. “Brian was a lifelong competitive swimmer, passionately believing youth athletics are a catalyst

for healthy living while instilling lifelong benefits of leadership skills, personal responsibility, camaraderie, teamwork and fair play,” said his brother, Chris Stocker. “We hope this 10-year investment in the Lodi Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services’ summer swim programs will have a lasting impact and benefit for a multitude of Lodi youth.” “This is an incredible gift to the Lodi community,” said former Lodi Mayor Mark Chandler. “The impact of the Brian M. Stocker Fund will last far longer than 10 years in the lives of those it will touch. We are truly humbled that our City’s aquatics programs were selected to carry out his wishes, and we will do everything we can to honor his legacy.” To learn more about the aquatic scholarships and summer swim programming, please see page 13 or visit us online at Lodi.gov/364/aquatics
