Parks and Recreation Essential and Adaptable

Activity Guide • Winter/Spring 2021

A note from Deputy Director, Cathi DeGroot

What a year! If you ask parks and recreation professionals across the county if their college degrees or years of professional experience had prepared them to respond to a worldwide pandemic, there would be a resounding, “Absolutely not!” However, what the business of parks and recreation has proven over the past 12 months is that it is both essential and adaptable. We all know that last March, what happened around the world and what “happened” to everyone, happened right here at home. Our traditional world of managing parks and playgrounds, recreation programs, services and facilities was turned upside down. With no playbook or comparable real-world experience to draw from, staff had to dig deep, adapt quickly and figure out how to remain an essential service, while redefining its value to the community. Looking back, I am incredibly proud to share that our team rose to the occasion by developing new ways to leverage our resources for the greater health and wellbeing of the community. Our parks stayed open, and we invited you to join us safely outdoors and virtually. Looking back, we fought hard to keep our parks and restrooms open. We had to close and open our 19 playgrounds a few times – no easy feat! We were one of the first childcare service providers (with new COVID-19 safety protocols) for essential workers, and summer camp was offered safely with zero closures due to virus exposure to staff or campers. Lodi Lake saw record-breaking visitation. With our Easter holiday event cancelled, staff quickly took to the sidewalks and parks with uplifting chalk art displays, painted rock activities and encouraged families to embrace being outside. In addition, we immediately created a virtual resource center that highlights what we can do to stay active vs. what we cannot do because

4

of the stay-at-home orders. We repurposed a park to serve the homeless with a hygiene station to help prevent the spread of the virus (a non-traditional service from the department). In addition, with so many of our facilities closed, staff immediately began creating new, and adapted existing, outdoor programs to meet the new public safety guidelines. All that said, I am also incredibly proud to be part of a team and an industry of parks and recreation professionals that rallied to support each other, as we learn and struggle through the impacts of the pandemic together.

Embrace Winter Fun Outdoors Throughout this winter activity guide, we encourage staying healthy outdoors by enjoying your park system, nature area, and trails in new ways. We also offer new virtual special events, recreation and fitness classes that can be enjoyed from home. As we embark on this New Year together, our pledge is to keep adapting and innovating our services and programs. Our unwavering commitment to serve the Lodi community, and its quest to stay healthy and connected, has never been more resolute. I am confident our team will deliver. Remember – parks make life better!

New Neighborhood Park Opening this Spring! Join us in welcoming our newest neighborhood park into Lodi’s park system sometime this spring. Plans for a ribbon cutting are underway, and the park’s namesake sign will be unveiled at the event. The new park is located in the Avalon subdivision, an FCB Homes development (west of Walmart) at the corner of Gala Drive and Courtland Lane. The Parks and Recreation Department is working with the developer to set a date for the ribbon cutting celebration sometime in late April or early May.

Play Lodi!

Activity Guide • Winter/Spring 2021

The FCB/Avalon subdivision includes a 1.96 acre high-ground park property with the following amenities: playground, picnic shelter, park sign, turf, trees, flower beds, irrigation, irrigation booster pump, interior concrete walkways, park perimeter concrete walkways, drinking fountain, park benches, picnic tables, barbecue, trash receptacles, bike rack, interior park lighting, stone veneer masonry work, utility enclosure, and underground utilities.

New Park Naming As part of a recent public input process to name the new park, the Parks and Recreation Commission, at the February 2, 2021, virtual meeting (open to the public at 6pm), will review the over 20 submissions for park naming. The Commission is ultimately charged with forwarding a park naming recommendation to City Council for consideration in March. When the date for the ribbon cutting is set, we will be sure to let everyone know.
