Writing a story of how Longstay Guide Magazine got its start has always been on my mind for the longest time. This is the one magazine that has given me a great opportunity to work as an editor for many years.

From the first day on till present, Longstay Guide Magazine proudly continues its walk towards its 8th year anniversary. Through our long journey together, much has happened to our close knit family: stories, feelings and thoughts that came into our lives – the magazine’s team. At times I just wonder in amazement, “How did we get through all those difficult times?” From a humble beginning on July 3, 2007 in a compact sized office, a group of driven, young dreamers launched their first bilingual English and Japanese magazine with the vision and mission to inspire our foreign readers by presenting the dynamic aspects of unique Thai culture and its prized values worth reading about through creative letters and words complimented with memorable photographs.

At times, we had to go all out to prove ourselves in the world of print media business; but with every challenge and problem along the way, we had proven ourselves to deservingly be among the best. We still take each step of the journey with the same walking shoes and take on the world with the same old backpack. With each step we take, it is a journey of endless inspiration and a search for life’s most cherished values.

July 3, 2007 marked a new beginning for a group of determined young team packed in a small office following their dream of launching a bilingual magazine: English and Japanese. The aim of their magazine was to inspire all international readers about the uniqueness of Thai culture presented through selective words and letters. Chapter 1

The First Journey on Familiar Frontier On August 1, 2007 the first Longstay Guide Magazine was published with just only 10,000 volumes distribution. This premiere issue was the work of an experienced group of true devotees who were willing to take the steps to continue the legacy of the old and take on the new passage with all their passion. This first issue tells the tale of the exhilarating adventure along the trail of several Royal Project’s travel routes in Northern Thailand. It introduced many tourist attractions, activities and the history of the Royal Project, a project from the Royal Remarks of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Because of this project, formerly opium plantations were changed into a golden land of vegetation where many fruits and vegetables were grown instead and lives of the people were forever changed into a better way of life. This issue was printed by the most modern and outstanding layout work of that time. Though the 60 pages issue had only a few sponsors, taking the first step was rough but we finally managed to walk through it with flying colors.

郷土の人々の生活を変革しようと国王の率先した指導で始まったロイヤルプ

ロジェクトの経緯等を当時では最新のレイアウトで配置し、60ページの内 容。様々な問題はあったが、何とか最初の一歩を踏み出した。

Baby Steps All the Way The Grand Shadow Puppet Drama

The powerful voice of ventriloquist echoed in the air as the ancient show of Kanon Temple, “Nang Yai” (The art of Shadow Puppet Drama) began its first scene. A magnificent art of Nang Yai which had been forgotten for hundreds of years gloriously came back to life again on the stage to show the sophisticated movements of light and shadow reflections in front of audiences. Nang Yai is one of Thai’s cultural heritages which showcases the performance by integrating several fields of art such as craftsmanship, literature, dance, speech and music.

All of this made the art of Nang Yai unique and precious paving the path for Baan Kanon to become one of the six best communities in the field of conservation as The Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) from Asia – Pacific Cultural Center for UNESCO (ACCU).

Moreover, the UNESCO’s committee of cultural experts had given their prestigious award to Kanon Temple in its efforts of continuing “Nang Yai Inheritance and Restoration”.

The exploration of Kanon Temple’s “Nang Yai” group was done to convey the priceless historical values so little known to the general public. With the replacement of the new media trend, this form of ancient art may disappear altogether through time. The immediate solution is to preserve and keep this precious art of “Nang Yai” which has already been fully recognized by UNESCO, alive for the rest of the world.

挿入歌の歌詞と交錯する語り手の力強い喨々とした声と共に、カノン寺の

ナン･ヤイ(影絵：光と影の人形劇)上演の幕が開ける。影絵は、人々に忘れ去ら れ何十年と久しいが、今まさに光と影の芸術が目の前に蘇ろうとしている。影

絵といえば、上級の演劇と称されるタイの文化遺産の1つ。織り、文学、舞踊、

言語(語り)、歌曲と数々の学術が融合し、芸術的価値の高い独特の演劇を完 成させている。その功績が評価され、カノン寺の地域社会が、世界で6箇所し か選ばれていない優秀地域社会に選ばれている。また、カノン寺の影絵は、

ユネスコ･アジアセンターの重要保護無形文化遺産に指定され、ユネスコ(国

際連合教育科学文化機関)の文化専門委員会より、カノン寺の影絵がその伝 承と復興において優れた功績を納めたとして表彰されている。

スタッフの間で、カノン寺の影絵が話題となり、多くの人々に貴重な文化

遺産を知って貰いたいと記事に取り上げることになった。現代の娯楽に取っ て代わられ、時代の流れと共に、消えてゆこうとする影絵。大切なことは、そ

の魂をつなぎ、皆が協力して、ユネスコに訴え、多くの人々に知って貰うこと ができたということだ。

The King’s Glorious Cloud Mansion

One of the most difficult and complicated tasks we had undertaken was working on The King’s Glorious Cloud Mansion feature. The problem was not on data collecting, but coordination and permission to take photos in the King’s Glorious Cloud Mansion, the biggest golden teakwood palace in the world! It was built with the unique Thai architecture philosophy: it used only wood pins instead of iron nails with no iron construction structure. It was a brilliant blending of Thai-Europe and Victoria style architectures. Inside the palace, there was a unique display of private collections and precious paraphernalia of His Majesty King Chulalongkorn the Great, some of which were one of kind master pieces with priceless values. The flourishing art and culture in this mansion radiantly represented the true sovereignty of Thailand. Even at its ripe age of more than 110 years ago, this King’s Glorious Cloud Mansion still glows in its splendor as it once did in its historical past.

We had to be extra careful in every detail and every step of the way. We can honestly say that this article was the most classic article for Longstay Guide Magazine. On the cover was the Audience Hall, the grandest ornamented room in the King’s Glorious Cloud Mansion. All photos were taken by Mr. Preteep Duangkaew by Vokeng, the best photographer of Longstay Guide Magazine.

雲の上の王様の屋敷

もう1つ大変だったのが、ウィマンメーク宮殿の取材だ。資料集めではな

く、写真撮影のため、王宮に許可を得るのに困難を極めた。チーク材を利 用した世界最大級の宮殿で、タイの伝統建築の技術を活かし、釘の変わり

に木の楔が使われている。基礎建築にも金属は一切使われておらず、ヨー ロッパのビクトリア様式を取り入れた建築デザインとなっている。宮殿内部

には、ラーマ5世の貴重な調度品が展示され、中には世界でただ1つという

ものもあり、歴史的価値が高く、値段はつけられない。また、宮殿建設当 時、タイはその文化と芸術の興隆の最盛期であり、タイらしさを見事に表し

ている。建設から既に110年という時間が流れているが、その美しさは、当 時と変わらぬままである。

このコラムでは細心の注意が要求された。文体からレイアウト、使用

する写真と全てに細かいチェックが入った。ロングステイガイドマガジン の中でも最高傑作となるコラムの1つと いっても過言ではない。表紙を飾った

At the Tha Pae Boxing Ring, Chiang Mai, the editor and photographers were standing among thousands of cheering Thais and foreigners fans. The magazine team concentrated on capturing every detail of the atmosphere in the boxing ring. It was an insightful tale of every aspect of Thai Boxing, not only the physical boxing and kicking, but also the Thai culture that reflected through the rousing Thai music, stimulating smell of boxing oil, fascinating tattoo on the back of boxers, and the magnificent tribute ceremony to the boxing mentor before the actual fighting. All these charming elements made the atmosphere around the boxing ring so thrilling that it cannot be fully described in words. The ringing sound of the bell was the signal for the excitement to begin as we heard noises of punches on opponent’s body as loud as the cheering screams. The last scene of the exciting match that we saw before leaving the boxing ring was the over towering foreign boxer was totally knocked out by a Thai boxer right on the canvas.

The cover of this issue was made through the determination of photographer who tried his best to gather the photos for a month which reflected both the ‘no pain /no gain’ philosophy of the boxers and ‘wild and crazy’ cheering crowd. タイボクシング

だが、キックが相手選手の胴にきまる鈍い音も観戦者の声援に負けていな い。私たちがボクシング場を後にする前の最後の写真は、巨大な西洋人フ ァイターが、屈強なタイ人ファイターによりマットに沈められたものだ。

コラムの表紙となっている写真は、縁日などの余興としてお寺で行われるム エタイの雰囲気を伝えようと約１ヶ月張り込んで撮影したもので、沈痛な選 手表情と歓声に沸く観客の表情がカメラマンにより上手く撮れている。

“Hidden Realms, Sacred Spaces”

The Photo Exhibition by Martin Reeves, the British photographer. It was on display at Tamarind Village Chiang Mai on July 18, 2013. A total of 35 photographs were exhibited telling the tale of the special journey to the mystery and holy places around South East Asia Region such as Angkor Wat in Cambodia, a ruin Stupa on the bank of Inle Lake in Chan State of Myanmar, and deserted Pu temple of Khmer nationality on the top of the mountain near Kong River in the Southern Lao. All these places reflected strong beliefs of the people of the East towards sacred holy places in threat of slowly deteriorating as time goes by. Martin Reeves created his identity with the black and white infrared Kodak films. These special photos have their own magical power: they catch an invisible light which can only be seen once the film has been developed. It was truly a mysterious light from the mystical world and even more enchanting than the usual rainbow prism we are accustomed to seeing. The photos and article were published in the 74th issue in August 2013. They were the best article and photo collection from this famous British photographer.

‘Hidden Realms, Sacred Places’とは、イギリス人の写真家マーチン・リーブスの写真展のタイトルだ。チェンマイのタマリンドヴィレッジホテルで2013年

7月18日から開催された写真展では、カンボジアのアンコールワットを始め、ミャンマーのシャン州インレー湖に残るクメール式の崩壊した仏塔遺跡、メコン

川を臨むラオス南に位置し、山頂に聳えるクメール式のワット･プーなど、全35点の作品と東南アジアに点在する秘境を訪れたエピソードが展示された。作品 には、アジア人の時代の流れと共に消え行く神聖な場所に対する深い信仰を写す影が表現されている。マーチン・リーブスは、コダックの赤外線白黒フィルム

を使い独自の世界を表現している。この特殊フィルムで撮影された写真は、まるでマジックのように、裸眼では決して捉えることのできない光を映し出す。出 来上がった写真は、被写体が放つ光を捉え、人間の目が捉える世界を遥かに凌駕する。写真とコラムは、2013年7月発行の74号に掲載され、著名な英国人 写真家の優れた視点から厳選した写真とエピソードを楽しむことができる。

The Wings of Freedom

At 7.00 a.m. the morning sun rose over the horizon shining its warm golden ray of light on the overlapping majestic mountain range displaying the diverse vibrant yellow hues as the feathery mist creeps its way through the mountainous horizon with dainty grass flowers swaying to the rhythm of the wind. This breathtaking natural phenomenon held our team’s attention for hours as we stood there admiring the view among the crisp cold air at the highest peak of Thailand on top of Inthanon Mountain. This haven is pure heaven for real birdwatchers. The question was, “Why do people watch the birds?” We got the answer right after looking through the telescope and saw little birds taking flight and showing off their brilliant feathers. They were flying so freely with colors running together like watercolor in the rain that it would be a shame if such beauty should become extinct from this world. Conservation seems to be the only solution for these birds. Like little dramatic performers singing their songs, they belong to the natural stage designed by nature to keep the balance of the eco system. It was right then that I and the team understood the sentence which said, “Forest can exist without humans, but humans cannot live without the forest”. The data collecting and article writing in this issue were done with the great help of many honorary bird watching experts from Lanna Bird and Nature Conservation Club like the professional bird photographer Mr.Nopakorn Nidkosakul, who took the photo of Oriental White-eye for the cover. The issue was published as the 44th issue in March 2011 and it was also the first issue that appeared in a Digital Magazine form via a famous magazine website: www. issuu.com.

Moreover, because of the bird watching trend of the Japanese in Thailand, it gave Longstay Guide Magazine a great opportunity to collaborate with an Osaka branch of the Tourism Authority of Thailand in Japan. They hired us to publish a bird watching book which introduced ten bird watching places around Thailand. We travelled again this time to the World Heritage forest “Khao Yai National Park”. We collected data and studied more about professional bird watching. The work was quite demanding, but it gave our team a great chance to get to know the forefront photographers of Thailand like Mr.Supachai Sungkatat Na Ayutthaya who took more than 100 photos of birds in this Japanese version of bird watching around Thailand book. Furthermore, Mr.Kazuhiko Okabe, a Japanese birdwatcher who fell in love with birds in Thailand with all his heart and soul, was our consultant who advised us about the direction for this book. Both of them selflessly contributed to this book as well as work as freelance photographer and writer in the Bird’s Nest column of Longstay Guide Magazine.

7時、朝陽が地平線に顔をだす。黄色い陽光が幾重にも重なる山並み

に降り注ぎ、グラデーションが美しい。雲の筋が目の前の山頂付近を覆

い、草花が風に揺れる。スタッフは足を止め、時間を忘れて美しい光景に 見入る。冷涼な空気が漂う、タイ最高峰ドイインタノン山頂付近、ここは愛 鳥家にとっては真の楽園。何故鳥を観るのか？覗いた望遠鏡から答えを得

た。自由に飛び回る鳥もいれば、自身の美しさを誇るように舞う小鳥もい る。言葉では表現できないほど美しい。どうか美しい鳥たちが永遠であっ て欲しい。保護という答えは自然と出てくる。小鳥たちは、美しい踊りと歌

を奏でる小さなエンターテナーであると共に、彼らの大きな舞台となる森 の生態系のバランスを保つ重要な役割を担っている。僕とスタッフは、“森

は人間がいなくても問題ないが、人間は森がなければ生きていくことがで

きない”ことを学んだ。情報収集とコラムの執筆にあたり、多くの有志に協 力を頂いた。野鳥観察の専門家であるランナー野鳥自然保護クラブ、野鳥

写真家のノパコーン・ニクロサクン氏、表紙のハイバラメジロは彼の撮影に よるものだ。コラムは2011年3月44号に掲載されており、人気のオンライ

ンマガジン、www.issuu.comを利用して、今号よりデジタルマガジンもス タートした。

更に、日本人の間でもタイの野鳥観察が人気となり、日本のタイ政府

観光庁大阪オフィスの依頼で、タイの野鳥観察ハンドブックを製作した。タ

イ国内10の野鳥観察ポイントを網羅し、更なる情報収集のため、世界遺産 にも登録されてるカオヤイ国立公園へ足を運んだ。ハンドブックの編纂は 困難を極めたが、このタイの野鳥観察ハンドブック日本語版に100羽以上

の写真を提供して頂いたタイでも屈指の野鳥写真家スパチャイ・スンカタ ット ナ アユタヤー氏と出会うことができた。また、タイの野鳥を愛してや

まない日本人の愛鳥家オカべ・カズヒコ氏からも様々なアドバイスを頂い た。2人は、ハンドブック編纂の影の協力者である。

2人は、現在も写真家、フリーランスのコラムニストとして、ロングステ

イマガジンにて、Bird’s Nestのコーナーで連載頂いている。

Since our first issue, we are always in constant search for a variation in presenting stories and information as each month rolls by. The latest outstanding addition to our beloved creation is the Temple Guide column. It is written in only Japanese language by Mr.Ota Kamitake, the Japanese traveler who simply fell in love with his temple visits around Chiang Mai while collecting profound and significant historical data. To him, it is more than just a hobby. It’s an insatiable passion that keeps him going each day.

Longstay Guide Magazine steps up to international standards in collaboration with SilkAir Airline, one of the best airlines in the world.

Fortunately chosen among the mass media group, we flew to Singapore and Yogyakarta City of Indonesia and shared our traveling experience with SilkAir Airline through a memorable collection of many articles and photos. This impressive journey gave us new perspectives via the friendly smiles of neighboring citizens and their diverse music, food and language.

8 years down the road as a magazine and media publisher, the number might seem amateur compared with other big nationwide or worldwide magazines. Still, Longstay Guide Magazine still holds true to our ideology to produce a quality bilingual magazine that provides all readers the opportunity to explore new experiences as well as understand the true identity of Thai life from our magazine.

As the future world is bound to hold some uncertainty, factors such as changes in the economy, science, society and cultures could affect the magazine production. These include tourists who spend a few days sightseeing, and foreign experts, businessmen and students who spend a few months working and studying in the city. Tell us about your professional career prior to launching the Golden Wells Residence.

All my life I have worked in the service industry with various foreign entities. The two that helped shape my work philosophy are Air France and Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi, Chiang Mai. Both gave me the opportunity to learn about the needs and expectations of customers of various nationalities, and how to satisfy them. After leaving Dhara Dhevi about two years ago, I opened a breakfast and brunch restaurant called Monarissa, which has now merged into the Ma-Yom Tree Restaurant, our in-house restaurant at The Golden Wells Residence.

What were you doing before coming to Chiang Mai? I originally belonged to JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) in the past, and lived in Katmandu for more than two years. My field was in pharmaceutical products at the Royal Drug Res. Laboratory of Katmandu. Furthermore, I was the science instructor and headmaster in the elementary and junior high school for the Japanese children who lived there. I decided to leave my duty in Nepal at 55 years old then returned to Japan to reopen a company, but I realized that it was not my place to stay.

Why did you choose to live in Thailand and Chiang Mai as your final destination?

I chose Chiang Mai because we (Mr.Ota and Wife) could speak English here while enjoying the warm climate and the convenience of an international airport, standard medical facilities, sufficient internet service, and secure environment. After experimental living in the scorching April heat, we finally decided on Chiang Mai with all the attractive benefits.

What do you do in Chiang Mai? I and my wife travel around to see the beautiful temples of Chiang Mai and write down what we find.

Except for the rain, I always make my usual daily temple visit. Our goal is set at 150 temples. We then send in our story to Longstay Guide Magazine every month.

以前、JICAに所属し、2年ほどネパールに住んだことがある。カトマン

ドゥではRoyal Drug Research Laboratoryで医薬品の指導を行った。

さらに、そこに住んでいる日本人子弟のための小・中学校での理科指導と 校長職も拝命した。55歳で会社を辞めて、退職と同時に赴任したネパール での任務を終えて日本に帰り、ほんの少し会社勤めを再開したが、居場所

がないことを痛感した。すでに両親を見送っていた。子供たちもどうにか独 立したのを機に、以前から考えていた海外暮らしを実行することにした。

多くの人が考えるように、候補地としては、南太平洋、イベリア半島、東

南アジア、オーストラリアなどがあった。そして、次のようなことを考えてチ ェンマイを選んだ。英語で生活できること、温暖な気候であること、国際空

港があること、医療機関が充実していること、インターネットが自由に使え ること、安全性に問題がないこと、最終的にチェンマイに決める前には、灼 熱の4月の一ヶ月を試験的に二人で暮らして、諸条件の確認を行った。

次の2点は、ずっと前から決めていた。宗教関連の調査と日本語能力

の向上。すなわち寺の調査と文章修行である。雨が降らない限り、まいに ち寺巡りをしている。調査対象は150寺ほどである。そのレポートを毎月

LONGSTAY誌に送り、連載していただいている。既に100軒ちかい寺の調 査を終えている。

ルの前の濠沿いの道路を200mほど北に行く。 【概要】 いくつかの資料にチェンマイ王室に近

い寺と紹介されている。紹介資料はほとんど重複 している。2014年現在、小本堂を建立中、併せ

て仏塔の修復も進行中である。建立は、再興ラン

ナー王朝の1783年、翌年認定（ウィスン・カマシ

マ）とされるが、1980年と書く資料もある。

【紹介】(1) 城内で最小（1ライ強の1612㎡）の寺領の寺である。Wat 認定の要 件の一つは1ライ以上の寺領であるが、この寺は40ｘ40mほどしかない。(2) タ

ーペー門の近くにはDok（＝花）の名前を冠した3軒の寺（W. Dok Kham、W. Dok EuangおよびW. Dok Ngernがあった。寺名は、それぞれ“金の花”“ラン

の花”“銀の花”を意味する。W. Dok Ngernは、現Rydgesホテルの隣にあった

が廃寺になり、その後Dok Ngern Schoolになった。(3) ウボソット（布薩堂） がなく、本堂がその機能を兼ねている。(4)敷地に余裕がないため、本堂の入 口が北向きになっている。 (5) 寺名に王朝第2代のPhra Chao Chiang Mai Chang Phueak Dokkham（=タマランカ公）の名前が入っており、本尊は王宮

技巧を反映しているなど、昔は王室と関係のあった重要な寺だったことが推定さ れる。 (6) ビルマのランナー占領は1558-1774年である。ビルマ駆逐したもの

の、すぐにチェンマイが復興したわけではない。20年ちかくは廃墟の状態であっ た。再興ランナー朝初代のカーウィラ公は、有名な「野菜を籠に人民を都に」と

いう政策を採った。この政策に則って異国から連れてこられた人々が建立した寺 Chedi

である。とくに雨季には何ヶ月も水が引かなかった、と当時の様子を描く資料が ある。

Rufous-collared King fi s h e r Actenoides concretus アオヒゲショウビン Behavior: A species of bird in the Alcedinidae family, it is found in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, and Thailand. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests up to 760 m above sea level and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. This species has been divided into the category of endangered species by IUCN Red List.

With a total length of 24-25 centimeters, it has a shaggy crest, thick bill, smoky blue head and back, and white throat and collar. Its underbody is creamy white with band of blue across its chest. The male does not have a Rufous band across its white abdomen; however, his flanks may be Rufous. He may have some red in his blue chest band. The female’s flanks contain some Rufous coloring, and the band across her chest below the blue band is often Rufous as well. Some feather tips along the blue breast are Rufous.

Rufous-collared Kingfishers feed on fish, insects, scorpions and small snakes. The Kingfisher will stab its prey, either with the bill closed or open, depending on the size of the prey. Kingfishers of all three families kill their prey by beating them on the ground or perch to shatter the bones. Then they work the fish into their mouths, head first, so that they won’t get cut up by the bones or scales as they swallow it whole. June 6th, 2014 marks the greatest golf charity ever thrown here in Pattaya City, Burapha Golf and Resort. David Mills, friends and Mike Moore (Fenix) actively organized this year charity inviting expats and Thai golfers for a special Charity Golf Day. It turned out to be a perfect day with dark clouds protecting kind hearted golfers from the sun with over 100 players who bought a team voucher to compete in this charity tournament. Everyone had a great time competing 18 holes with lots of technical prizes for near pin on every par 3, 4 and 5, including two long drives.

The biggest surprise was pictures drawn by disable children given as a trophy for the winners of every flight. The heart of gold participants had raised a total sum of one million baht for the Srisangwan Foundation, a school for the disabled in Bangkok, Thailand. It was wonderful feeling to have once a year doing the right thing for a good cause for our disable children here in Thailand.

We are looking forward to their return next year!

に隠れ格好のゴルフ日和となりました。参加券を 購入したグループ参加者総勢100名以上が賞品 をかけて18ホールを競いました。パー3、4、5で はそれぞれロングドライブ2本を含むニアピンが ありました。

ィーに使われ、注目を集めていました。このイベン トでは100万バーツがバンコク都内にある障害者 学校シリサンワン財団に贈られました。年に一度、 障害を持つこどもたちへの支援を行っています。
