EDITOR’S TALK A Beautiful Morning 5.00 a.m. loud and clear was the wakeup call from my alarm clock. It was time for me to leave behind a slumber dream and start my journey to Doi Inthanon for an exciting bird watch and information gathering. It was our earliest trip so far as we passed curve after curve through the cool crisp air that caused some stirring comments.

At 7.00 a.m. we took a break on the road side and watched a picturesque view of the swaying wild flowers awakening in the meadow. Through the misty fog lazily covering the air, we saw the intense golden ray of light slowly invading the infinite green valley. We wanted to stop time right then and there to capture the infinitejoy we experienced that morning. It made our day and our smiles will stay with us as long as we have this special memory P.S. Many times in our lives we search for happiness in life in forms of the usual physical conveniences. Some find happiness in eating their favorite dishes, some get rid of their stress through relaxing music from the radio, others enjoy watching soap opera and there are people who sleep all day and let time dictate their lives one day at a time. 私たちは、日常生活の中で、身近なことからささやかな幸せを見つけようとする。 好きなものを食べたり、ラジオから流れる音楽でリラックスしたり、テレビドラマ にはまったり、たまには時間を忘れて転寝するのもいいだろう。



What if we break away from our usual routine and try something new like appreciate the morning first light and pay attention to the tiny creatures flying freely high above the sky so blue that it takes your breath away? This world still has so many things for us to admire. We have the opportunity to observe these small miraculous creatures in natural lighting rather than under the usual neon lights, feel the natural cool breeze rather than the air conditioned one, be surrounded by brilliant flowers that makeup the perfect background scenery and amazing little birds singing notes high and low. The show is now ready to begin amidst the vast forest that embraces this enormous open air theater. でももし、朝起きて空を見上げるだけで、月並みの日常から解き放 たれるとしたら。蒼い空を自由に飛びまわる小さな生き物たちに関心を 持ってみよう。世界には、私たちを和ませてくれるものが、まだまだ沢山 ある。小さな命を追ってよく観察してみよう。蛍光灯の光ではなく陽光の 下で、エアコンじゃなく自然の風を感じながら、花々を舞台背景に繰り広 げられる小さな鳥たちのショーが、豊かな森の真ん中の巨大な劇場でゆ っくり始まろうとしている。

7.00 a.m. February 8, 2011 At the scenic view before reaching Doi Inthanon, the highest mountain in Thailand, passing curve after curve, we looked out the windows and we saw a view of a bright morning sun rising above the horizon.

The golden sunlight softly pressed itself against the mountainous layers, misty fog pushed itself into the infinite valley, wild flowers swayed to the rhythm of cool breeze and the sky gradually changed hues from dark to light. It was an amazing sight much like a masterpiece on a canvas. My team and I took a moment to admire this picturesque sight for almost an hour amidst the chilling air around us.

2011年2月8日午前7:00、私達は、何回もカーブを折れて、タイの最高峰イ ンタノン山の山頂手前にある絶景ポイントにたどり着いた。車窓から外をのぞ けば、今まさに朝日が昇る瞬間の風景が飛び込んできた。黄色い陽光が 幾重にも重なる尾根を照らし、霧の筋が山頂をかすめ、山は手が届くく らい近くに見える。草花が風に舞い、空は美しいグラデーションを描いて いる。まるでキャンバスに描かれた油絵のようだ。私とスタッフは、か なり冷え込む中、時が止まったように暫し美しい光景に目を奪われて いた。



The time on my wristwatch said 8.10 a.m.

We arrived at the very top of Doi InthanonSummit at Km 48 and 2,565 meters high above the sea level.

Our journey to the highest point of Doi Inthanon this time is different from the previous ones. We’re not here just to admire the chilling air, strike a pose with the famous sign “The Highest Spot In Thailand” for the camera or be amazed at the temperature so low you could see your breath. This time, we’re here to learn more about our forest friend. Birds are the most diverse of all the vertebrates living in our world. We’re very fortunate to have an experienced guide, Khun Madiew who has extensive knowledge from the Lanna Bird and Nature Conservation Club consisting of bird watchers and conservationists of Doi Inthanon. While we were preparing equipments like a telescope, binoculars, guide book a small notebook for our bird watching activity, we heard a small sound of the Chestnut-tailed Minla with a special design around its neck like strings of necklaces greeting us from a bush nearby.

Right next to our first forest friend is the Green-tailed Sunbird with brilliant colorful feathers that glitter when reflected by the sun’s ray as it swoops down to drink the nectar from the Millennium Rose. *The tip of Doi Inthanon is the only location in Thailand where Green-tailed Sunbird exists. The size of this bird is 11.5 – 19 cm from beak to tail and its color is similar to that of a Humming Bird*

時計の針は午前8:10をさしていた。私達は、海抜2,565mインタノン山の山頂 サミット Km 48地点にいた。今回のインタノン山への旅は、私を含めスタッフみな、 普段とは少し目的が違っていた。単に寒さを求めて、最高地点の看板と記念写真 を撮り、最低気温に興奮して、白くなる息を楽しむために来たのではない。今回は、 小さな動物だが、最も多様な種類がいる生物の1つ、小鳥たちと出会うためにやって来 た。そして、インタノン山の野鳥と自然を保護するために設立されたランナー野鳥自然 保護クラブのマディアオさんに案内役をお願いした。私たちが撮影のために、望遠鏡、 双眼鏡、野鳥のガイドブック、記録用ノートなどを準備していると茂みの方から、私達 への挨拶か、ノドジマコバシチメドリの鳴き声が聞こえてきた。ネックレスを何本もかけ ているような首の模様が特徴だ。また、色鮮やかな光沢の羽が特徴のミドリオタイヨウ チョウは、ちょうどシャクナゲの蜜を吸っているところを写真に収めた。 *タイでは、ここインタノン山の頂上付近でしか観ることができない。ミドリオタイ ヨウチョウは、とても小さな鳥で体長が11.5 ～ 19cmしかない。そのサイズや色鮮やかな 姿はハチドリとよく似ている。

A feather can help protect the bird from the sun’s ray, attract attention during mating rituals, help regulate the body’s temperature and most of all, assist in flying Green-tailed Sunbird ミドリオタイヨウチョウ

As the sun’s ray increase its warmth, we stopped to have breakfast and coffee while being surrounded front and back by the Dark - backed Sebia. We were greeted by their lively melodies which brought smiles to everyone at the distance of 100 meters. For those who really love nature or are bird lovers, this place is a bird lover’s paradise. There’s no other place like it in this country where you can enjoy seeing the most beautiful birds varying in size and species at such close range. Doi Inthanon National Park has 380 kinds of birds from the total of 980 found in Thailand. This shows the abundance of natural resources that still remains with us. In early February of each year, a survey of birds at Doi Inthanon is taken because the amount of birds is the index that indicates the effective state of the ecosystem. If there has been a change in the environment, taking the census of the birds will reveal any irregularity in the environment. If the number of bird species from this year is different from that of last year, it shows that there might have been problems of deforestation, decrease of water resource or destruction of natural habitats.

After a hardy meal, we continued our excursion on foot to Nature’s Trail Ang Ka Nature Trail. Throughout our walk, rows of dense Evergreen trees cover the trail like a big umbrella shading us from the sun. We had to pause to concentrate on finding the feathery creatures that kept eluding us. It wasn’t long before our visual and audio senses became receptive to the little ones. This was the time when your mind was totally focused on a certain object and nothing could disrupt your attention. I pointed my binoculars towards the tree and we found the tiny Snowy-browed Flycatcher cheerfully sunbathing. Move the binoculars a little to the right, I found a female Common Rosefinch with its color blending right in with the tree top.

It boldly stood challenging the cool crisp air then stared right into our lens before taking off. Seeing the two birds really excited us. お腹を満たした後は、遊歩道全体を熱帯雨林の大木が覆うアンカ･自然遊 歩道を散策してまわった。私達は、野鳥を見つけるため、視覚と聴覚の神経を集 中させた。雑念のない頭が空っぽのの状態がしばらく続いた。レンズで高い木の 枝先を覗いていると、小さな空の主、ムネアカヒタキが気持ちよさそうに日向ぼっ こをしているのを見つけた。レンズを右に向けると、保護色のような体の色で、木 の枝に紛れたアカマシコのメスが、冷たい風に対峙していた。彼は飛び立つ間際 に顔をこちらへ向けた。2羽の小鳥たちに出会えたことに私達は大興奮だった。



We walked further down the road and heard scratching noises and a melody new to us. We waited to see the owner of the sounds and our patience paid off. It was the Dark – sided Thrush that jumped from place to place turning over leaves to find worms and insects on the wet ground. Its feet were covered with mud while its feather blended with the natural surroundings. It walked back and forth as if to tell us that it knew we’re all watching. Once it was certain that we were definitely watching, it quickly jumped away without giving us a second glance. The leaves in Inthanon forest are quite different from those of the ones in the city. Inthanon’s leaves are unique in shape with each leaf narrow and sharp so rain drops roll off easily into the ground preventing any chance of mold developing on the leaves. At the same time, it also allowed water to be absorbed easily into the soil. This ecosystem is a natural cycle that relies on each other for survival. “Nature can continue to thrive without humans but humans can’t survive without nature”.

私達は、木の歩道を歩き続けた。カサカサと何かを漁る音、私達が今までに聞いたことのない鳴き声が聞こえてきた。私達はじっと耳を傾けその声の主を探していると、漸くコオオハシツグミ に出会えた。水を含んでじゅくじゅくの斜面を飛び跳ねながら落ち葉をひっくり返し、芋虫や昆虫を探している。彼の足は泥まみれで、保護色の体と共に自然と一体化している。辺りを行ったり来たり していたが、誰かに見られているのに気づくと、飛びながら一目散に逃げていった。インタノン山で見られる葉は、街の中のものとは違う。葉が全体的に細くなっている。これは、水分を大地へ落とし、 多湿な気候によって葉にバクテリアが繁殖するのを防ぐためだ。また、水分を生態系に還元することにより、互いに共生するサイクルが出来上がっている。｢自然は人がいなくても生きていけるが、人 は自然なしには生きていけない。｣,

At check point 2 in the Jeep Track area, we walked into the forest about 400 meters to wait for the Rufous-bellied Niltava. We waited for quite a while but no sign of this little famous star. It was probably stealing an afternoon nap somewhere in the forest. If birds need a rest then we probably should too. We decided to eat lunch at Uncle Deang. Besides providing food, it’s also a Birding Visitor Centre that provides general bird watching information at Doi Inthanon. Each day, this center receives quite a large amount of bird watchers and photographers who came to exchange information. Visitors also record birds that had been spotted in the Log Book. Not only is this information useful, it also connects bird lovers from all over the world with each other and gives them the chance to share their experience.

After finishing our lunch, we continued with our bird observation at Uncle Daeng’s house. There, we found Yellow-cheeked Tit that set its hairdo like a Hollywood movie star and applied a dash of yellow blush with a very tiny brush to get such a glowing effect. Next in line was the Whitethroated Fantail that was an expert on applying white to its eyebrows and throat. Nearby is the Spectacled Barwing looking smartest in the land with grey blush on its cheeks and a chic red maroon coat covering its wings. An Oriental White-eye can be captured through binoculars with its golden-emerald feather perfectly complimenting the pink Sakura petals.

午後2:00、また、小鳥たちを求めて山に入った。レストラン･Mr.Deang付近で、セボシカ ンムリガラに出会った。ハリウッド･スターのようなヘアスタイル、特注の筆で描いたであろう 黄色い頬がとても愛らしい。続いてはマミジロオウギビタキ、眉毛と喉の白い模様が特徴 だ。メジロシマドリは、白い頬に赤茶色の翼が特徴で、この森では1番美しい鳥の1つ。次ぎ に双眼鏡が捉えたのはハイバラメジロ、緑がかった黄色い光沢の羽が特徴で、ヒマラヤ桜 のピンクに良く生える。

3 p.m. Watchirathan Waterfall Strong currents that crashed into the waterfall caused the amount of oxygen in the water to increase. Streams in this area are abundant with bugs and small water animals. The shy grayish Plumbeous Redstart, rounded like a piggy bank, has a crimson tail that can brighten any gloomy morning.

It perches on a rock next to the brook. Its tail flipped up and down as it turned its head right and left ready to take flight to find its next meal. As for the Blue Whistling Thrush with a yellow beak, its deep blue feather fascinated us as it dipped its head into the water to eat young Mayfly for afternoon snack and then quickly disappeared into rock crevices. And that’s not all, we also found the joker Black-crested Bulbul with its golden body and contradicting raven head shaking back and forth on a branch. Its sight might look strange at first but the contrasting colors will grow on you. As we were busy with writing down information in our note book, our most handsome the River Chat made its grand entry.

A telescope spotted it while it was happily cleaning it self on rock formations in the middle of turbulent current.

It ruffled its feather in pure bliss. The white strip on its head and red belly was the most distinguished and recognizable features. Even with a plump body, what we saw was the coolest River Chat ever.

午後3:00 ワチラターンの滝 水飛沫が迸り力強く流れ落ちる滝は、多くの酸素を水中へ運んでくれる。滝壺から流れる小川には、昆虫や水生生物たくさん暮らしている。青みがかった灰色で恥ずかしがり屋のカワビタキは、 小太りの体から赤茶色の尻尾が伸びている。川辺の岩にとまりながら、お尻を上下に動かし、体を左右に揺すりながらいつでも飛び立って獲物を狙える姿勢を維持している。オオルリチョウは、黄色 いくちばしで、瑠璃色の体に白いラインが入っていてとてもお洒落だ。彼はちょうど頭を川に突っ込んで蛾の幼虫を午後のおやつ代わりに食べていたようだが、急旋回して、岩陰に消えてしまったた め、顔を見ることはできなかった。もちろん、他にも個性的な鳥たちと出会った。エボシヒヨドリは、黄色の体に、髷が付いたような黒い頭をしている。首を振りながら枝をのぼっていた。珍しい模様 の鳥だが、本当に綺麗だ。私達が忙しく記録をとっていると、主役が姿を現した。望遠鏡が流れの速い小川の真ん中にある岩の高台に立って水浴びをしているシロボウシカワビタキを捉えた。気持ち よさそうに身を震わせて体を乾かしている。頭の縁には白いラインが入り、赤いお腹が目を引く。身体はまん丸太っているが、私達が今日見た姿は川のおしゃべり屋そのものであった。



These birds are natural pollinators with the ability to adjust to new various surroundings including the hot desert, the vast ocean, the high mountain range to the wet tropical rainforest.

They seem to exist everywhere even among human communities. They’re biological resources that are important to nature when it comes to playing the role of regulating the ecosystem to a balanced state. Birds drink the nectar through their long slender beak. As they dip this special designed tool into the flower, the pollens will stick to the beak and end up fertilizing other flowers as well. As for birds that like to eat fruits, a similar process of fertilization takes place.

After eating the fruit, bird’s droppings consisting of seeds will fall to the ground and eventually grow into a young plant. This helps distribute the plants throughout the forest evenly and effectively. ご紹介した鳥たちは、適応能力が高く、様々な自然条件で生きて行くことができ、乾燥 した砂漠、海の真ん中、高い山の上、熱帯雨林、ましてや街中にも住んでいる。また、鳥達は、 自然環境に重要な役割を担う1つの生物資源となっており、生態系のバランスを保つ働きをし

ている。例えば花の蜜を吸う鳥の嘴は、細長くなっており、嘴を花の奥に入れて蜜を吸うとき、 嘴に花粉が付着し、この鳥が他の花の蜜を吸うとき、めしべが嘴に触れれば、受粉する。受粉 を助けているのだ。一方、木の実が好きな鳥たちも、種の保存に大きな役割を果たしている。 木の実を食べて糞をする際に、種も一緒に出てくるからだ。その種が大地に落ちると芽を出 し成長する。鳥たちはこの森の様々な種の保存･拡散に寄与しているのだ。

It was a late afternoon so my team and I bid farewell to Doi Inthanon’s vast woodland. It has been a most memorable experience filled with joyful amusements, unexpected disappointments and a few surprises. We watched with anticipation what our little feathery friend would do next. Their adorable behaviors are nature’s greatest gifts to us for our patience and persistence. Bird watching helps raise the public’s awareness in nature and environment conservation in a delightful way. The enchanting melody sung so beautifully, the amazing interactions between our friends of feather and the ecosystem all have been uniquely choreographed by Mother Nature herself with all of us as distinguished audience. Not only does this natural theater crowded with dramatic performers provide first class entertainment, it also teaches us a valuable lesson on the unbreakable strong connection between nature and every living creature on this blue planet.

午後5:00 陽も傾き始めた。私とスタッフは、インタノン山の森に別れを告げるときが来た。 とても貴重な体験をした今回の旅、鳥たちを観察していると、期待通り、期待外れなこ と、思わぬことが起き、鳥たちがとても愛らしく、可憐に思われた。全ては、自然が私達 に与えてくれた大きなご褒美だった。鳥を観察することで、飛び切りの楽しさを味合わ せてくれる自然や環境の保護を意識するようになる。澄んだ声で鳥たちが奏でる音楽 と踊りは、森全体の生態系をつなぐ。そしてこのシナリオは、人間を名誉鑑賞者として、 自然によって書かれたものだ。この巨大な劇場は、束の間の感動を与えるのではなく、 私達にこの蒼い地球上のあらゆる物が不思議と互いに関連し合っているということを 認識させてくれる、多くの役者達で溢れている。

“My perception of wildlife conservation has always been more of a passive one. We can contribute so much more just by letting nature take its due course. The forest has always naturally provided clean air and water… there’s really no need to demand more than what has already been given.” Sueb Nakasatien, the legendary Thai conservationist who literally gave his life for a noble cause. He had vowed to do his best to protect wild plants and animals as if his life depended on it. When all else failed, he was true to hisvows. One life was courageously sacrificed to save the future for all. ｢僕がいつも口にしてきたのは、森はただ片付けてやるだけで、私達が多大な恩恵を受ける自然保護となる。わざわざ木を切り出して使う必要などない。木は 何もせずと も 空気や水を与えてくれる。これこそが、使うということじゃないか？木を切る必要なんかない。｣これはスープ･ナカセーティヨーン、森と野生動物、自然を保護するために命を 捧げたタイを代表する自然保護者の言葉だ。



Knowledge Box: Bird’s nest is really not the place for birds to sleep in. Actually, birds naturally sleep in bushes and shrubs. A bird’s nest is truly the practical place to lay eggs and nurture tiny offsprings. The nest protects the eggs and baby birds from dangerous predators as well as provides warmth like an insulator maintaining temperature control while the parent birds generate heat.

Nature’s Balance Keeper is the kind of bird that eats insects and other animals to help maintain nature’s well balanced food chain by playing a vital role in controlling the ecosystem.

Without these birds, there would be too many insects that could cause extensive damage to crops and upset nature’s balance. These feather friends play a crucial part in helping farmers use less chemical pesticides which will eventually lead to a less toxic environment: swallows prey on various insects flying in the air, Wood Warblers remove worms in trees and hawks and falcons eliminate rats that destroy agricultural crops.
