What: Since 2004, Xia Xing has been creating agglomerative painting, the size of whose individual units does not change within any one year. This was initially 70 x 100cm, but this changed to 140 x 200 in 2007 and 2008, becoming 35 x 50cm after 2009. Painted content is all reproduced from photo images appearing in the same newspaper in the same period, so that whatever appears in the news is what Xia Xing paints. He paints almost every day. To state it more incisively, Xia Xing, using the same method for one full year to produce one work, is always awaiting the appearance of the next news photo, so his painting is a regimen of constant waiting, with even he himself unaware of when a work may be finished. HUA HIN morphing
Hua Hin -- fueled almost exclusively by weekend vacationers and overnighters from Bangkok, caters primarily to the domestic market – but with new world-class developments now emerging, that might soon change

or many overworked and urban-grind weary Bangkokians, Hua Hin is the nearest beach escape. There are many finer beaches around Thailand of course, but while the beach here certainly doesn’t rival those on Phuket or Koh Samui, there is so much to do here for a weekend getaway of fun by the sea and under the sun, especially now the destinations seems to be bent on creating a higher profile than ever. Hua Hin is a bit different from other Thai tourist spots in that it caters primarily to the domestic market, over 70 percent in fact. Fueled almost exclusively by a weekend market with overnighters coming down from Bangkok after work, this domestic market is growing even more. This means that one can count on good and authentic food at fair prices, less hassle and tourist scams like those commonly found in other major tourist spots, and it also means that if you come during the week, you’ll practically have the place to yourself. Lately however, many foreign travelers are beginning to see what domestic travelers see in Hua Hin. They are beginning to trickle down in droves to the this charming town edging the the Gulf of Thailand. But the buzz really is that Hua Hin is in a current state of transformation. The town, long regarded as the last bastion in Thailand of a long-gone, romantic era in the days of travel because of its history and heritage, is modernizing. Perhaps it’s inevitable: the old
eventually fades away, the new ones come to say. But while there’s an ongoing debate about whether the destination is better for it, there seems to be no stopping the onset of modernity. Many old timers lament the fact that the developments are changing the face of Hua Hin, but many tourism stakeholders believe that indeed, this is what the doctor ordered. For travelers like you and me with modern travel needs and habits – the new developments are mostly a boon, and allows us to enjoy more options than ever when we travel to the venerable town. Are they good for the town or not? Your answer is as good as ours – to put it simply. Let’s take a look at some new developments that reflect the changing face of Hua Hin, besides the newly opened Bluport Hin Resort Mall (separate story in this issue):
VANA NAVA
Vana Nava (www.vananavahuahin. com), Hua Hin’s knockout waterpark, On this Spread: The Railway Station opened in December of 2014. PLEARN WAN
There are several open-air theme parks around Hua Hin, some being “kitschier” than others, but the best of them all is Plearn Wan (www. plearnwan.com), a living retro museum celebrating the vintage past. The name Plearn Wan means “the joy of yesteryear,” and there’s an old wooden indoor section here where hawkers sell traditional, and often hard to find, Thai sweets, surrounded by old black and white photos, 1950s televisions, jukeboxes, and plenty of other nostalgic bric-a-brac. There is also an old-style fairground here with game booths and an outdoor cinema.
SANTORINI
Another themed attraction is Santorini Park (www. santoriniparkchaam.com), set to resemble a slice of Greek island paradise but is actually located just north of the town, closer to Cha Am Beach. There are plenty of blue and white colors, whitewashed houses,

THE VENEZIA
Even kitschier than Santorini is The Venezia (www.theveneziahuahin. com), another themed shopping plaza. This one resembles Venice. While there is a San Marco bell tower replica out the front, plus a 200mcanal where one can go for gondola rides, this park goes over the top with a 3D art gallery, a wax museum, an upside down house, a mini-train, and a petting zoo on the premises. There are even horse cart rides around the Mediterranean-looking grounds! Needless to say, there’s also plenty of dining and drinking options available here, plus lots and lots of shopping.

and a multitude of shops, restaurants, and even an amusement park for entertainment. While the park is not right on the ocean, there are plenty of water-related themes here, such as dancing fountains, water balls for kids, and man-made waterfalls.
Cicada Market (www. cicadamarket.com), an evening market held from Friday-Sunday at the southern end of Hua Hin, features local art and handicrafts as well as other creative artistic endeavors. The market is held in a garden that is lit up by sparkling lights, and has a low key and relaxed vibe. There are traditional puppet shows, live music, dance performances, plus food and drink. The market has sections selling handmade bags, fashion items, paintings, sculptures and cards, and is an outlet for young artists looking

CAVIAR FARM
Very few tourists are even aware that high-quality caviar is now farmed in Thailand. In fact, the Thai Sturgeon Farm, a Thairegistered company with a registered capital of THB 20 million, has been operating since Nov. 2011, and its products are now gracing many dining experiences, not only in Hua Hin but also in other parts of the kingdom. Thai Sturgeon farms Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser Baerii), Russian sturgeon (Acipenser Gueldenstaedtii), and the hybrid Huso Dauricus x Acipenser Schrenkii in a closed recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS) and produces caviar, sturgeon meat, and value-added products for national and international markets. The first phase facility of 1,500sqm was designed and built for a maximum production capacity of 1,500kg of black caviar per year. The closed recirculation aquaculture system farm consists of foldable fish tanks, mechanical drum filters, perfused bio-filter, oxygenators, ozone generators, adder tanks and pumping systems. Investment todate is over US$30 million, and the company received BOI approval in 2016. In July 2016, TSF received the Global Eco Brand 2016 award from an international association of ecologists and entrepreneurs. More details about this project and breeding techniques can be found on www.sturgeon.co.th.
HUA HIN HILLS VINEYARD NEW CHIC HOTELS
Feast Thailand, a new innovative tour group, recently unveiled food tours that showcase the hidden culinary gems in Hua Hin. The food tours take travelers on an interactive journey of taste and discovery to explore local cuisine and culture with English-speaking hosts of intimate local knowledge leading sightseeing and tasting excursions of the ‘real’ Hua Hin. The diversity of food on offer in Hua Hin is not immediately obvious to the international traveler but tucked behind the facade of clearly marked food destinations is an underground world of sensory delights; locals enthusiastically slurp noodles served from vats of steaming hot broth in hidden laneways; smiling cooks serve delicious meals from the front of their homes and charismatic street vendors welcome Feast Thailand travelers with fresh food like no other. Combining a love of food, people and Thai culture, Feast Thailand Food Tours offers international travelers the ultimate road-less-traveled experience. Being a royal beach resort, cabarets, discos, and other nightspots are more regulated than normal and somewhat limited, which many will find refreshing, especially those with families and couples hoping for some restful quality time surrounded by sand, sun, sea, and abundant fresh seafood. Hua Hin has a famous, stunning 5km (3-mile) beach, lovely waterfalls, lush limestone mountains and plenty of leisure activities. It has become world renowned as a superb place to rejuvenate at one of several internationally renowned spas in a great location. HIDEAWAY ‘FAR FROM WORRIES’
Located a short three-hour drive from Bangkok, Hua Hin has long been the weekend getaway of choice for Thais with a bit of disposable leisure income and savvy expats looking for some down time after a hectic week in the capital. In fact, this old world ambiance is a large part of Hua Hin’s attractions: unlike other popular tourist destinations, there is a wonderful cultural mix of local, Asian, and Western tourists, all enjoying the peaceful charms of this classic hideaway by the sea. King Rama VII discovered Hua Hin’s charms in the 1920’s and subsequently built a palace here so he could enjoy the area during his longer stays. In many ways, the palace established the old world charm of the place, and was appropriately named Klai Kangwon Palace, meaning “far from worries.” In a phrase, this sums up the Hua Hin area to a tee. INNOVATIVE FOOD TOURS
Several new boutique hotels with a definitive young vibe and spirit are emerging in Hua Hin as well, again reflecting how the new breed of travelers – the millennials – are asserting their influences over the minds of tourism stakeholders. These include the Radisson Blu Hin Resort (separate feature in this issue), which opened in November with a big fanfare attended by distinguished guests from Hua and Hin and Bangkok. Iconic, stylish, sophisticated – as Radisson Blu puts it, these hotels boasts facilities, services, and technology that match modern holiday habits. There are other developments of course – and the Shoreline Beach Club of Amari Hua Hin (separate article in this issue) comes to mind, so that travelers of any age will have a hotspot, which perfectly suits their tastes, preferences, and budget.

Wine tours are coming of age in Thailand too, and while the terroir and the temperature in Hua Hin is not the same as Khao Yai, you can enjoy them here too. Set in the hills above Hua Hin, about an hour from town, is the scenic Hua Hin Hills Vineyard (www. huahinhills.com), which feels a bit more like South Africa than Thailand, as the area of almost 600 acres is home to Monsoon Valley wines, and features “new latitude wines” (wine produced outside of the traditional 30-50 latitude growing belt). In addition to wine tasting and enjoying the sweeping views from the Sala Wine Cellar open-air pavilion, one can also tour the grounds on an elephant, and there are also bicycle trails throughout the property.

classes, horseback riding, diving and snorkeling are only a few of the other options for those with a more active disposition. World-class shoppers need not worry either: With two nightmarkets, a local market, and numerous boutique stores, Hua Hin is an excellent place to shop for locally produced handicrafts, fabrics, souvenirs, and food products. Coastal cruises, day trips around Monkey Island and Dolphin Bay, local fishing excursions and night time deep-sea trips are all available from Hua Hin, while freshwater fishing, river cruises and eco-tours run along the waterways inland. Halfday and full-day trips are available. WHAT TO SEE Popular destinations include: Pa-La-U Waterfall, a 15-tier feature in the jungle 60km from town; Kaeng Krachan National Park, Thailand's largest reserve, stretching to the Burmese border; Sam Roi Yot National Park, a landscape of limestone peaks; and Khao Takiab, a hill at the end of Hua Hin beach sprinkled with Buddhist shrines and well worth climbing for the panoramic view; and Hua Hin Hills Vineyard home of Monsoon Valley wines, a superb restaurant, with stunning views of the wine lands and elephant rides among the vines. seaside resort. And who doesn’t? EAT & DRINK International travelers visit Hua Hin for the coastline and wonderfully natural hotels, but the locals arrive for the food, with the town's fishing fleet delivering baskets of prawns and fish every day, helping the town maintain its reputation as one of Thailand's top seafood spots. Seafood is one of Hua Hin’s biggest draws. Saeng Thai Seafood (032 512 144) is right off of the fishing pier and serves up an astounding array of cooked marine options. Chao Lay Seafood (032 513 436) is another popular option, set in a large house with semi-outdoor seating, and extremely fresh catches of the day top-off the extensive menu. The Night Market (Damnoen Kasem Road, next to the train station) may not have air conditioning and fine silverware, but is well worth a visit. There are also plenty of other places serving more than seafood. The Living Room Bistro and Wine Bar (032 530 485) is the latest player on the burgeoning Hua Hin gastro scene, serving up fusion dishes in a 50s-style wooden beach house. True to its name, La Birra (084 567 6989) serves up a variety of excellent imported beers to go along with Italian pasta in an al-fresco Mediterranean style bistro setting. If you’re craving a Moroccan tagine, the sensual Al Hamra (032 616 777)), in the opulent Marrakesh Resort, creates Moroccan and fusion dishes served in an authentic Moorish setting. Hua Hin, besides its splendid
unspoiled natural attractions has a rich legacy and unique charm. It is also famous for many tourist attractions and historical landmarks such as the Rajabhakti Park, Klai Kangwon Palace, and Maruekhathaiyawan Palace. Because Blúport has been designed to enhance further Hua Hin’s reputation as a world-class beach resort, “It will surely help bolster Thailand’s tourism economy and solidify further the country’s status on the Asean front,” says Supaluck. Proud Real Estate also sees the resort mall as a great opportunity for Hua Hin’s tourism industry. “We believe that this collaboration for Blúport will increase further the growth potential of the city,” says Pasu Liptapanlop, executive director of Hua Hin Asset Co., Ltd. “For a long time now, Hua Hin has been tremendously becoming more popular and attractive among the high-end visitors,” Pasu points out. “Thanks to its favorable geographic location, which links the central region with the southern regions of Thailand; and its diverse range of attractions, beautiful natural scenery, and cultural arts, Hua Hin is a veritable trade, commerce, and investments hub – an important destination in Thailand indeed.” Hua Hin boasts over 16,000 rooms (hotels and resorts)--which side by side with condominium projects (45,000 units) that are now already operating or under construction, and high-tech infrastructure systems such as the
Bangkok-Hua Hin high-speed train and double-track railways in the pipeline--are major catalysts for a thriving tourism and commerce. The destination welcomes over six million visitors each year and more than 20,000 expats live in the town. In the last few years, Proud Real Estate has been developing more mixed-use projects in Hua Hin including the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort, Vana Nava Hua Hin Waterpark, and True Arena Hua Hin sport complex; and has committed to extending its investments and promoting famous attractions in the town. But among it key developments, Blúport Hua Hin represents a huge step in achieving the company’s vision, Pasu says. “Tourism industry is one of the pillars of the Thai economy, and Proud Real Estate will continue
to invest to improve the tourism standards in Hua Hin and Thailand and meet global standards in future," he says.
IMPRESSIVE ARCHITECTURAL MARVEL
Blúport Hua Hin Resort Mall is nestled in a prime spot at the center of Hua Hin, Prachuap Kirikhan. The resort mall covers an entire 200,000sqm of land area right across the Intercontinental Hotel Hua Hin. The resort mall is described as an

impressive architectural marvel that combines inspirations from famous seaside resorts such as San Tropez, the Riviera, Caribbean Islands, Mediterranean Sea, and Cape Town. These influences and inspirations were seamlessly ingrained in both the interior and exterior designs making Blúport Hua Hin a significant feat by itself alone. But more importantly perhaps, Blúport Hua Hin Resort Mall was able to preserve Hua Hin’s innate charm, which has been attracting high-heeled tourists to the destination since it became popular among the local elite in the early 20s. What makes Blúport Hua Hin truly unique? Foremost perhaps, as we mentioned earlier, is its unique design and architecture. Even from a distance, the resort mall is an imposing landmark, a beautiful work of art that can only add to Hua Hin’s increasingly becoming more modern vibe. The humungous resort mall has been divided into distinct sections to fulfill every conceivable need of visitors and customers, from the 50,000sqm-department store and the shopping complex that covers 25,000sqm to the parking area, which can accommodate some 3,500 vehicles in its 100,000sqm land area. “It is thoroughly modern, utterly contemporary, a pure delight to
the senses whether you are a pure shopaholic or sheerly a fan of big malls,” says one visitor who attended the grand opening in October. To complement its visionary concept, the owners and builders of Blúport left no stone unturned to give the resort mall the necessary elements to make it stand out. “This dream destination is the epitome of the shopping and entertainment lifestyle experience that excites with different designs for each zone,” Supaluck reiterates. Thus, a range of exclusively selected, top-of-the-line fashion merchandises, beauty, lifestyle living, sports, and digital technology products abound in the resort mall. To make it truly a one-stop lifestyle destination for everyone, Blúport houses famous restaurants and wellknown cafés that will surely attract the hipster crowd looking for chic venues to chill-out. Other familiar luxuries are present as well, including Gourmet Market, a world-class gourmet destination that is known for selecting only the best produce from the world over; the Blúport Cineplex, which is a world-class cinema complex with six theaters; and the new and exciting Whaley Port, the first interactive underwater world theme park in Thailand.

resort mall provided distinct zones that reflect the atmosphere it wants to impart. For example, the “Magical 7 at the Port of Pleasure” captures an oceanic atmosphere through sights, sounds, and scents. From the exterior to the interiors, one sees enchanting visual expressions of inspiration from many seaside resort cities. No detail has been overlooked, and even the staff uniforms were custom designed by ASV by ASAVA to make sure the entire atmosphere brings that nautical seaport theme to life. The sound complements the visuals. Songs and music -- also inspired by many of the famous beaches of the world and mixed with some local music -- for each floor are different, but all help to provide a shopping experience like no other. To complete the seaside illusion, a special aroma, “Blú Signature Scent” -- produced by ERB and inspired by the smell of sea breeze during the sunset – envelops the entire zone to give a feeling of ultimate relaxation and freshness. At the “Fashion & Lifestyle Port,” one can discover the most complete line-up of world-class fashion and beauty brands spanning across the 18,000sqm space of Blúport Complex and Blúport Department Store. These include world-class fashion brands and wellknown Thai brands such as H&M, Uniqlo, Kipling, Jaspal, Chaps, AIIZ, X=ACT, Lyn Around, Shoe Bar, and Naraya. There’s a section here called “Beach Story,” billed as the
first lifestyle fashion concept store in Thailand, which gathers all kinds of beach accessories in one place from beach resort wear, sarongs, and bikinis to sunglasses, beauty products, and more. A zone called “Portwalk,” the eclectic seaside shopping village with over 200 shops and stalls, offers lifestyle goodies, fashion shops, trendy home décor stores, home spa products, DIY craft shops, florist, and food trucks – all in an area covering 10,000sqm. What makes Portwalk different and alluring is its atmosphere. Instead of feeling of shopping within the confines of a closed mall, you feel like you are just walking in a famous beach location or a chic beach resort, thanks to especially designed sections such as Seaside Village and Street Village. For those whose needs are more basic and familiar, Blúport Hua Hin has a Gourmet Market & Dining Port, which takes visitors to a spacious, premium supermarket (10,000sqm) where you can buy all the best products from around the world. Each item here has been meticulously selected for their freshness and superior quality. Also available are unique services such as “You Hunt We Cook” and “The Dock Oyster & Seafood Bar,” and “Pizza Bar by Petit Plasir.” There are many other customized services as well such as “Vacation Platter ” – seafood, charcuterie and cheese, or oyster – which caters to every dream party planning. Other convenient ad
hoc services are available of course. For foodies and gourmet dining connoisseurs out there, Blúport Hua Hin boasts a selection of some the best international restaurants and cafés, including over 100 shops under the design concept, The Dining Port, which gives familiar names in eateries such as Dean & Deluca, The Coffee Club, Peppina, Wine Connection, Coca Restaurant, eatview by est. 33, Holly’s Coffee, the Coffee Club, and Sushi Hiro, a sleek, new twist. Even several famous restaurant names from Hua Hin and Pranburi that opened a branch here received improved facelifts. For those who are visiting in search of fun and adventure, Blúport Hua Hin presents the 2,000sqmWhaley Port – the first interactive underwater world theme park in Thailand. Built to the tune of THB 200-million, Whaley Port is divided into three zones: Interactive Port, a new kind of playground that uses interactive technology and mapping projection, which is the newest innovation from renowned gaming companies in Japan and South Korea; Play Port, an adventure zone that explores the enormous whale’s belly and other fun playground essentials such as the slider and an enormous ball pit playpen; and Game Port, an exciting games arcade that brings Japan’s superior technology to Thailand. And of course, what is a mall without a multiplex? Thus, Blúport Cineplex by the Major Group, a world-class 1,200-seater cinema
house with special VIP seats in six theaters that have gone through the stylish resort interior design makeover and fused with the best technologies. There’s the Blú Concierge and Tourist Services to enhance exclusivity and convenience of shoppers. These facilities make services such as restaurant reservations and providing important tourist information and services such as currency exchange, VAT Refund, and delivery service easier and hasslefree. Last but not least, there’s the stunning Blúport Department Store, which promises a most relaxing and delightful shopping experience within a 25,000sqm dream destination that was designed to transport visitors into a unique shopping experience in a seaside resort. As can be expected, the department store offers the best of the best brands in every conceivable products and goods category. “Blúport Hua Hin Resort Mall easily fulfills the requirements of people yearning for a delightful shopping experience and premium services essential to a relaxed, modern lifestyle,” says Supaluck. “Modesty aside, we truly believe that it can without doubt be called the ‘WorldClass Resort Mall Destination of Asia’ -- and the pride of Hua Hin!”

ua Hin's gourmet scene is coming of age, undeniably so, with the array of new dining and wining options increasing here by the day. One hotspot that epitomizes this excitng development in the charming beachtown as it emerges as a new gourmet hub is Shoreline Beach Club at Amari Hua Hin Resort.
Located on the beachfront of Khao Takiab, one of Hua Hin’s most picturesque settings, the Shoreline Beach Club (Tel: 032 616 600/email: reservations.huahin@amari.com) perfectly attunes guests to the unique rhythm of the destination. Here, you can relax to the soothing sounds of the sea while enjoying refreshing cocktails or other poolside favorites, light dishes, and scrumptious desserts. That’s by day. By night, the mood at Shoreline changes, and how. It transforms into a stylish, romantic dining venue where you can savor the freshest seafood, meat and poultry BBQ as well as tasty prime cuts and some of the best modern international-Thai cuisine in Hua Hin. Imagine a dinner under a vast canopy of stars while the sweet whispers of the ocean serenades you.
DESIGN
One of the Shoreline Beach Club’s most engaging features is its design. With a concept that represents one of the hallmarks of the Amari brand, “Better Together,” the restaurant’s design brings together guests in an atmosphere of utmost fun, sharing memorable moments. New features include a pool where you can laze and soak in the sun while relishing the sea breeze and view, or if you come with family, enjoy the vast sundeck for some great bonding moments. There are five canopy beds for couples to keep their private moments, and a mini (sand) playground for kids while parents sips signature cocktails by the pool. By day, a white canvas contrasting with the blue color from umbrellas and sundeck creates
ADVERTORIAL a modern vibe and makes the ambience more relaxing. By night, the atmosphere becomes subtler, as the surrounding dims toward a cozy, casual setting. Guests will find the landscaped beautiful garden under a “walk in the park” concept welcoming, as they walk from the entrance into a privatefamily-club-like environment. To stimulate the senses further, an open kitchen has been added and watching the chefs in action really works up the appetite.
CUISINE
But the crown of the Shoreline Beach Club is the food it serves. There’s an extensive menu showcasing Mediterranean, European and Asian influence, as well as a range of freshly grilled seafood dishes, meats and poultries, plus a pitcher of innovative cocktail creations. Some guests might find traditional Thai-Italian flavors in the menu familiar, and that’s not surprising since an experienced Italian chef from Prego Restaurant, Koh Samui trained the kitchen team here. Signature highlights include the popular 20cm-sized pizzas such as “Diavola (pizza bread topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella, spicy salami and fresh chili)” or “Capricciosa (pizza bread topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella, ham, sautéed mushrooms, artichoke and black olives).” But foodies can rest assured that every dish have been carefully chosen, including Prego’s famous fettuccine or lasagne Bolognese, risotto Gamberi, fettuccine al pesto, pinoli, mascarpone, and many more.
And to top these magnificent delights, we recommend the fabulous desserts, with the Chef’s tiramisu topping the list. For lunchtime, choices of poolside favorites, light dishes and scrumptious desserts are available -- for small and sharing portions. Don’t miss the Mediterranean-Thai dishes, such as smorieng salad, grilled king prawns with mango salsa, Mediterranean seared tuna on tomato with white bean salad, and the gourmet Shoreline salad. Yearning for traditional Thai taste? Then go for yam som-o, spicy som tam, and sea pearls. A Northeastern style deep-fried sea bass with Thai herbs is also available. By night, cheese-lovers can start the evening with the Shoreline cold cuts & cheese, a top favorite that is perfect for sharing; or grilled asparagus (asparagus with blue cheese, onions and balsamic). Seafood lovers can enjoy the Shoreline mixed BBQ grilled platter or the favorite of many, the Thai-style seafood curry in a coconut shell, hor mok maprao onn.
SUNDOWNERS
For those who prefer a sundowner prior to dinner, Shoreline Beach Club beckons with signature cocktails (created with a local twist) such as the best seller "Funky Margarita," an aromatic drink infused with Thai herbs and perfectly blended with tequila. By the way, guests can create their own flavors, should they wish for a different one. A newly invented concoction is the "Thai-rumba, Chalong Bay," and famous rum from the South of Thailand (mixed with lime-juice and
pineapple juice -- Prachuab Khiri Khan province is well known for pineapples). The drink is served with three selections of syrup: elderflower, strawberry, and passion fruit; and guests can choose from their favorite aroma and tastes. Laidback tunes linger on the background as the cocktails are served, making the atmosphere at the Shoreline Beach Club, more convivial. So where else would you be in Hua Hin, by day or by night? At Shoreline Beach Club, where else? Shoreline Beach Club Amari Hua Hin Resort Open daily from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. (for lunch) and 6-11 p.m. (dinner) Happy Hours: 4:30-6 p.m. and 10-11 p.m.

SILKEN LEGACY – AND MORE Some reasons to visit the Isan hub of Khon Kaen now! by Atthasith Khupratakul

hon Kaen, the second largest province in Northeast Thailand, is known for silk production. Indeed, it is the center of silk production in Thailand. But there’s more to Khon Kaen than the ordinary foreign visitor to Thailand probably knows – and that’s why exploring is fun and rewarding. Khon Kaen has been inhabited since millions of years ago when dinosaurs ruled the area. But the province first entered history when the ancient Khmer Empire annexed the area (12th century) – and since then became a melting pot of cultures and traditions that helped shaped the province into what it is today. Khon Kaen is the heart of the Northeast region, a major hub of education and technology, commerce and politics, as well as a fast-rising tourism attraction, one of the fastest growing economies among the 26 provinces of Isan. While its fortunes came and went with the tides of various settlers, the province was able to preserve the inherent features that make it unique among the Isan provinces. Foremost of this is silk production, particularly in the Amphoe Chonnabot where excellent mudmee silk is delicately woven by local hands. Handed down from generation to generation, mudmee is a unique technique where silk threads are tied and dyed in a particular

pattern, resulting in beautiful textile. The province holds a grand annual Silk Festival to celebrate its reputation as a “Land of Silk.” Tourists find Khon Kaen an excellent place not only to observe mudmee silk production but also to buy wholesale its silk products that now come in various guises. Khon Kaen is also noted for the magnificent murals, particularly those at Wat Chai Si, a temple located at Ban Sawathi. This temple is considered a national treasure – of great archeological, historical, and social significance - and was declared a national monument in 2001. The mural paintings, created by a folk artist from Maha Sarakam, can be found inside and outside the main ordination hall. But perhaps no other element
of Khon Kaen culture is as revered as the “Phuk Siew” (Friendship Making), which has been practices by the Isan people since the ancient times. Phuk Siew is a very important ritual, an embodiment of beliefs, mores and values that the Isan people hold dear. It is conducted to “tighten the friendship” and so quintessential to Isan, that today it is organized along with the region’s big silk festival. But Khon Kaen is more than these three elements combined, and if you make a visit today, there is so much to see and do by way of natural beauty and attractions, archeological riches and historical landmarks, local folklore, arts, and entertainment; and a gamut of other features that make the province great to visit.

enang is one of the easiest weekend escapes from Bangkok, and it is also one of the best. The small island and its historic capital George Town offer a knockout punch of eye-pleasing delights, from George Town’s captivating colonial architecture and turn of the century Chinese mansions, to its iconic street art, which flourished after the city was listed by UNESCO for World Heritage Site status. Throw in some of the best street food in Southeast Asia and there is little to complain about in one of Asia’s most seductive spots.

Old George Town (and not Georgetown as it is so often incorrectly spelled) is a small place, meant for navigation on foot with its winding narrow lanes that can barely fit cars inside. Those who find walking in the tropical heat a bit much can always hire a becak (trishaw) driver to pedal them around, and the drivers are usually a wealth of knowledge about where all the best spots are. Slowing down here also affords one the chance to really appreciate its superlative traditional architecture, comprised both of crumbling old colonial buildings and ancient Chinese mansions. The Peranakan Chinese, descendants of Chinese immigrants, who are also called Baba-Nyonya, have their own distinct culture, and some of their regal homes are open for touring in Penang. The Penang
Peranakan Mansion (29 Church Street) was built in the late 19th century, and sports a unique mix of both Chinese and European art and architecture. This home, like most of the others here, belonged to successful merchants, an ode to the rise of immigrants in Penang, and while this mansion has been fully restored, even some of the nearby ones that have not still feature large and colorful wooden doors and shutters, along with gaily painted balustrades. Rags to riches tales are part of the George Town lore, and the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (14 Lebuh Leith) is another must-visit architectural gem. Open for public tours as well as operating as a bed and breakfast and museum, the mansion was the home of Boon Siew, who became a millionaire operating

trade ships, but actually started out as a kid as a water carrier. The gorgeous old mansion is actually just one of a handful along Leith Street, which has been nicknamed “Hakka millionaire’s row” due to the number of immigrant success stories and lavish old homes here. Wandering George Town’s charming alleys and lanes, you’re bound to come across its eye catching street art. In fact, the tourist office gives out street art maps these days, and don’t be surprised to see queues forming for photo ops at some of the top murals, as many visitors come here just for this. In 2010, the Penang government commissioned a studio to decorate parts of the city with 3D cartoon pieces, ranging from murals to steel structures, and this started a rage of street artistry, with the most prolific and famous pieces being rendered by Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic, whose murals of kids riding bicycles or local becak peddlers becoming as famed as the shophousearchitecture surrounding them. Not to be outdone by the architecture, the hawker street food scene in Penang remains just as popular as a draw, perhaps even more visually stunning to some. Locals queue up for ages at some spots, like the ice cendol cart (pronounced chendul), a green jelly noodles and coconut milk concoction with shaved ice, sold by a vendor on Penang Road, or the nearby char kuey teow (stir fried rice noodles). Also a big menu favorite in Penang is popiah (spring rolls). Over at the Chowrasta morning market,
an old man known as Uncle Lim has made somewhere in the vicinity of 10 million skins for the tasty spring rolls, standing over the same griddle for over fifty years now. These kind of age-old traditions flourish in Penang, and continue strong these days with foodie tours now coming in to check out and support these old masters. Another spot packed out with food tours and locals is a hole-in-thewall cafe, known as Toh Soon, set in an open-air passageway, where a collection of rickety tables sit under lime green iron railings, where customers wait for up to an hour to get charcoal grilled toast and a cup of strong and sweet Hainanese coffee, one of Penang’s best. Other dishes that make the bucket lists for Penang eats include asam laksa, thick rice noodles cooked in a sour and spicy soup broth laced with tamarind paste, and the Hokkien mee rice noodles that are cooked in a stock made of dried prawns, shrimp paste, and lard and then served with vegetables and sambal paste. Perhaps the best way to find all the best vendor stalls and learn about Penang’s culinary history (as well as how to make some of the dishes) is via a cooking class and visit to the wet markets with the experts. Penang native Nazlina Hussin (www.picklesand-spices.com) runs traditional classes at her cooking studio as well as market visits several times a week. The only thing you’ll complain about on a weekend in Penang is that it is far more suited for a week, meaning you’ll either just have to come back or else stay longer.

CONSISTENTLY INSPIRED Chef Stefano unveils a new range of exceptional Italian dishes at Don Giovanni by Percy Roxas

ith more and more new Italian restaurants mushrooming around the city these days, it is easy to take for granted even those places that have given us so much dining pleasure in the past. That is why it is great to be back again at Don Giovanni (Tel: 02 541 1234, ext. 4151 /email: fb_office@ chr.co.th), the Italian restaurant at the Lobby Level of Centara Grand at Central Plaza Ladprao Bangkok . This restaurant, truly, never disappoints. We’ve always been partial to this venerable restaurant, often described as a refined, classic Italian trattoria. As elegant in atmosphere as ever, this restaurant continues to be a

favorite of food-lovers who prefer solid consistency rather than just flash-in-pan specialty. It goes without saying that the spirit of discovery, innovation, and keeping up with the times, is not lost on them. Don Giovanni recently unveiled new signature dishes created by the seasoned chef, 28-year-veteran Stefano Zaninelli. Chef Stefano has spent the last seven years at the hotel and continues to be the heart and soul behind Don Giovanni’s kitchen. The restaurant updates its menu regularly, but what inspired him to create this particular new menu? “My childhood,” Chef Stefano replies. “I have lots of sweet memories as a young boy, but especially so about
the dishes created with passion by my mother and grandmother. They were food created with love, enhanced by the freshness and quality of Italian produce. That’s what we’ve been doing here at Don Giovanni and because there’s so much more where I can from (In Italy), I know we will not run out of new items to add anytime in our already comprehensive menu for lunch and dinner.” His Mom and Grandmom inspired Stefano to be a chef and he pays tribute to them daily by making use of ingredients they loved to use in their home kitchen, such as Carnaroli and Arborio rice for risotto. Chef Stefano’s new dishes feature not only this special rice, but also other key ingredients such as truffles, Marsala, rocket, and orange. He puts new twists even on classic Italian dishes, while still preserving their authenticity. For example, he serves Culatello ham with sweet melon (THB 860++). Chef Stefano says he makes sure each dish is a gem on its own, with
flavors and nuances that make Italian cuisine a hit anywhere in the world. The freshness of the rock lobster -- as in the pan-seared rock lobster, rocket salad with orange sauce and truffle oil dressing (THB 750++) -elicits images of the Mediterranean; romancing the tastebuds as it does the sight and the smell. The grilled peppered Australian lamb racks, served with grilled vegetables, potatoes, and Marsala wine reduction, was a true winner – appealing in its charred brown color, juicy, and so deliciously melt-in-themouth. One of the best lamb racks we’ve ever had of late! The utterly sensuous experience continues with the homemade fresh fettuccine (THB 780++). As the creamy truffle sauce brandy essence fills you up with a rich aroma that mingles well with the rock lobster tossed to the dish, you cant help but mutter: “Amazing dish that could convert even a non-pasta lover.” Then arrives the pumpkin and rosemary risotto (THB 790++),
embracing roasted Alaskan scallops, and made more inviting by the huge reddish king prawn wrapped with Parma ham. Thumbs up indeed! Not to be outdone, the pan-fried Australian tenderloin and seared foie gras (THB 1,650 ++) was one for the books; with the meat falling off as your knife cuts through it. Served with roasted potato, root vegetables, and black truffle sauce, it is a divine main course no meat-lover can resist. All in all the meal was a real feast -- an example of what good comes out when passion and inspiration are combined to the hilt. Chef Stefano really pulled this one out, and how. When he served the glorious orange tart “brulee” with chocolate ice cream (THB 320++), and then Amarena cherries with Marsala sabayon and vanilla ice cream (THB 360 ++) right after, we thought we had a taste of what ambrosia (food for the gods) must have tasted like. Add the thoroughly congenial service of the staff, not to mention the graciousness of Chef Stefano and our hosts, and this is one perfect lunch as one could possibly enjoy on an ordinary day. The food, the wine -- oh yes, the cellar is full -- to enjoy with your company, the atmosphere, and the service – all come together for a meal that will long linger in memory.
Opposite Page: The elegant restaurant (top) remains as inviting as ever. Chef Stefano (bottom). Above: Refined dining never goes out of style (top left) at Don Giovanni, and with such dishes prepared and presented with finesse and grace, the restaurant remains popular. JANUARY 2017 | 37

Slanted Taco is the real deal. The décor is “rustic loft” with wooden seating, made more colorful by the large wall mural of a Mayan prince, which represents the soul of Mexico’s fun living. Every dish – designed for sharing -- is organic where possible, and the flavors really put Mexico on a plate. No wonder, Slanted Taco is considered the new foodie favorite in Bangkok. Start your journey with the delicate crunch of the marvelous homemade corn chips, served with some killer sauces: Salsa Fresca, Salsal Roja, and Salsa El Chingón. Expectedly, tacos make an outstanding appearance on the menu. The “Taco El Chilango,” made with perfectly seasoned meat stuffed into a soft homemade tortilla and served with a flavorful hot sauce, really rises above the rest. But all dishes are prepared with passion and finest ingredients. “Beef Fajitas” (THB 580) is sufficiently tender and bold on flavor. Guacamole is well-executed, and pairs perfectly with sour cream and cheese. Even simple dishes such as “Pozole Blanco (THB 180),” a Mexican soup of slow cooked pork with corn, and served with lettuce, lime wedges, is surprisingly delicious. Finish your meal with the Mayan
chocolate lava cake “Xocolatl” (THB 120), topped with a scoop of rich vanilla ice cream and cranberry sauce, and you will be in Mexican heaven indeed. Don't leave without having the indulgent “Devil Margarita Machurat (THB 380),” which creates a memorable cocktail experience with its dynamic flavor. will create something just for you. Genre: Expect roaring live Jazz every Wednesday to Saturday. Octave Rooftop Lounge -- With 360-degree panoramic views of the city, this is truly a gem. While most of the other sky bars tend to be on the other side of town, cramped together and all compet-ing for space, Octave stands alone. And if that wasn’t enough to pull in the punters, they serve spectacular drinks. Try "Angel’s Envy," a fresh citrusy number with yuzu and fresh pineapple. Genre: Progressive House. There are hole hosts of DJ’s, but music is usually light and unobtrusive.
Piman
Grease (Piman 49, 46/12-13 Sukhumvit Soi 49) -- This four-story converted shophouse definitely feels out of place in the usually quiet area of Sukhumvit 49. Nevertheless, it is worth the trip. Each floor is themed, with a zany and eclectic array of stuffed animals, prints and clashing motifs. Drinks here are palatable, but nothing
to shout from the faux garden rooftop about. But this place will keep you coming for the music. Genre: Everything. From Thai-pop to drum’n’base, hip-hop to funk - you can’t really pin point just one.
Nana

This hidden, speakeasy style bar made the cut to World’s 50 Best Bars and still manages to keep its cool. With its looming, dark and polished interior, serious drinkers be warned - you will find it hard to drink anywhere else. Genre: The playlist is an intriguing blend of Afro-Cuban jazz, soul and funk.
Sathorn
Revolution Cocktail (50 Sathorn Soi 10) -- This is a great all-rounder. It’s Cayote Ugly meet’s dive bar, meets your local bar, but you’d be hard-pressed to find faults in this place. There’s an endless array of house DJ’s serving up club friendly sounds, and classic cocktails are wellmade. Saturday nights here can get pretty wild, so if you’re looking for tame, this isn’t it. Genre: Latin, pop, contemporary, EDM - you get everything here.
Silom
Maggie Choo’s (Basement, Hotel Novotel Bangkok Fenix Silom, 320 Silom Rd) -- There’s a reason why year-on-year Maggie Choo’s always reigns supreme. This dungeon-like, opium den with its hanging qipao clad models and looming steel doors, breathes 1950’s Shanghai back to life - with an interestingly dark twist. Genre: As eclectic as the interior, this bar keeps you guessing.

Chef Joan of Uno Mas unveils a new set of signature dishes meant for easy, enjoyable food sharing by Percy Roxas
O
ne Spanish restaurant in Bangkok stands head and shoulders among its compatriots and it’s not just because it is literally nestled high above them: on the 54th floor of Centara Grand at Centralworld hotel. Swanky and classy but at the same time casual and relaxing, Uno Mas (02 100 6255 or diningcgcw@ chr.co.th), has transported into the city a culinary experience featuring the best of Spain. “We just wanted to give a different meal experience,” says Joan

SPAIN ON A PLATE
Tanya Dot, Uno Mas' affable chef de cuisine/manager. “That is why our menu is full of easy, foodie-friendly items that are best for sharing but without compromising their quality, from the selection of ingredients to their presentation on your table.” The menu is inspired, to say the least, ranging from well-selected tapas to a la carte gourmet specialties – some of which you can’t find in other Spanish restaurants in the city. And there’s a never-ending desire to keep raising the quality bar further. The atmosphere is an added bonus of course, with the views offering an arresting 360-degree panorama of the Bangkok skyline from the heart of the city itself. Chef Joan recently unveiled a new menu for Uno Mas, and they were fabulous. From start to finish, our palate tangoed with delightful flavors that reflect the diversity of the Spanish landscape and its high quality produce. We started with Carabinero Spanish red prawn tartare, presented in an elegant plate that only enhanced its jaw-dropping appeal. Perfect starter, you will surely utter, as you dig into the dish – the prawn heads standing like two towers guarding gems of sliced prawn meat, deliciously mixed with imported condiments to bring out their fresh flavors further. Next was Huevos Rotos (broken quail eggs with piquillo peppers and sobrassada), attractively presented in a group of four. The creative approach made the deceptively simple-looking dish more appetizing, and a bite
will reward you with more than a thousand head-bobs of approval and non-stop whispers of “ah, yes.” When the deep-fried Dover sole with green mojo sauce was served, our palate was just about ready to waltz with more splendid flavors that are soon to follow. The sauce hinted of spices associated with Indian dips, and when the fish is dipped in it – it really kick-started our mojo! The next dish was the piece de resistance. We’ve always been partial to paella, so how can we resist when it’s done with Maine lobster, wild mushrooms, and black truffle? An utterly rich, magnificent dish that we could eat every day Not to be ignored was the Josper oven-grilled Presa pork, which came with a selection of sauces (green and red mojo, gravy sauce and nam jim jaew). Spanish pork has that succulent, juicy quality that distinguishes it from others, and Chef Joan’s interpretation makes them more mouthwatering. And oh, the desserts: Catalan Cream (a caramel ice cream) is one truly great dessert to crown a meal – and along with the Uno Mas Chocolate Cheesecake, what a delicious double whammy indeed! Overall verdict: Uno Mas is the new buzzword for Spanish food lovers in Bangkok, so don’t miss out on this one to complete your culinary trek. Chef Joan’s menu is meant for sharing, so make sure you bring your loved ones or business colleagues when you drop by. It’s more fun and enjoyable that way indeed.
