Even though we expect the celebrations to be toned down this year because of the state of national mourning the kingdom is in, we are sure we can make the best of the holiday season in each our own way. They say that life finds a way – and we believe fun and holidays too. So don’t worry fellow travelers, Thailand—especially at the major tourist spots such as Bangkok, Phuket, and Pattaya--is still a great place, indeed still the best place to be, for truly unforgettable holiday fun. Thailand is still the world’s favorite holiday destination and people from all over the world are still coming – we’ve hit the 35-million mark already, reports say --to enjoy the country’s myriad attractions and experience its unique “memorymaking “ power. We understand that the world is riding on the crest of change and while we’re all for preserving continuity, we welcome change with open arms, and we are not leaving any stone unturned in efforts to
take the publication to the next level, content-wise and otherwise. New developments, fresh innovations, and novel ideas that cater to the next digital-savvy generation while respecting the best of the previous generations are being incorporated to the magazine even as we are working on this issue, in a hope to engage our readers even more actively in the days to come. What: A special Buddhist ritual organized to mark the 60 days since the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The ritual will be held on midnight of Dec. 13, which will be a full moon night. This auspicious time was chosen in line with the belief that it was a Wednesday full-moon night when Phra Upakut, a disciple of the Lord Buddha who was said to have lived 2,300 years, would awake after a long-meditation. He would then disguise himself as a novice monk and descend down to the earth to beg for alms at night. It is believed that those who make merit by giving alms to this novice would then be saved from sin and will enjoy great fortune. n 1929, the first train puffed into Chiang Mai cutting the travel time to Thailand’s second biggest city from days to hours, and so began the transformation of this ancient Lanna Kingdom settlement. But while the railways have opened it up, it has not forgotten its ancient past. Large parts of the 700-year-old settlement remain protected by the ancient moat and nestled within its reconstructed walls and renovated great gates. This is the heart of present-day Chiang Mai. SEE & DO Dominating the city is Doi Suthep, one of the tallest mountains in Thailand, at its peak of which is one of the country’s most important temples, Wat Prathat Doi Suthep, which overlooks the entire city and its surrounding valley. The pulse of Chiang Mai remains the old walled city, so take some time to follow the ageless footsteps of peoples past and stroll down the old city’s narrow and ancient streets and alleys. Thapae Gate, the most important of the ancient city gates, is a lively place with a small night market. This gate is a good starting point for a walking tour of the inner city. The

best entertainment restaurants is The Riverside (Tel: 053 243-239) set on the side of the Ping River. For a quieter meal, the 100-year-old teak Antique House (Tel: 053 222208) is highly recommended. And of course, Le Crystal should not be missed if you fancy some fine dining. DRINK Nimmanahaeminda Road -- which attracts young and trendy Thai professionals – is major pub hub these days. Chiang Mai Entertainment Center has 30 bars, Thai boxing, and a colorful ladyboy cabaret. And there are all kinds of coffee shops! SLEEP Chiang Mai is well endowed with hotels for every kind of budget. A lively yet laidback city, Chiang Mai offers a refreshing alternative from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, and beckons as a great urban breakaway spot especially this winter.
Thai Elephant Conservation Center on Lamphun Road is famous for its treatment and rehabilitation of injured and traumatized elephants. The Elephant Nature Park is a reserve for abused animals, but has daily shows, elephant treks, and a home-stay program. Chiang Mai’s hills are popular trekking grounds where you can ramble through virgin forests, hill tribe villages and spectacular streams and waterfalls where nature is closeup and personal Or, how about taking your white knuckles for a white water rafting excursion? If water is not for you, then head over to Chiang Mai Sky Adventure to view the city and countryside from a micro-light aircraft. SHOP No trip to Chiang Mai would be complete without a browsing the local markets and shops. Walking streets are a feature of the city too. For serious buyers, try Sankamphaeng or Hang Dong roads. EAT Northern Thai cuisine is deliciously different from those found in the rest of the country but as a tourist town it is not difficult to please the foreign palate here. One of the

Six trains from Hua Lamphong Railway Station leave for Chiang Mai every day. Several airlines connect Bangkok with Chiang Mai. Frequent flights operate every day, including Nok Air and Thai Orient, which fly from Don Muang (not Suvarnabhumi) Airport. Check their websites for departure times and fares. Buses, which are cheap and comfortable, leave the Morchit Bus Station on a regular basis, to pply the 800km distance or so from Bangkok. The trip takes about eight to nine hours.

By Train -- Trains leave Bangkok in the evening and arrive at Suratthani early the next morning daily. At the Suratthani Train Station are buses, which go to the ferry pier to Samui (20 minutes). By Bus -- Many bus companies provide service from Bangkok to Samui. They generally leave Bangkok in the evening and arrive in Suratthani early next morning. From Surat, a ferryboat takes you to the island.
How to get to Krabi
By Car -- From Bangkok, proceed on Highway No.4, passing Petchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Ranong, and Phang-nga provinces for a total distance of 946km. Or proceed on Highway No. 4. Upon reaching Chumphon province take Highway No. 41, passing by Amphoe Lang Suan in Suratthani to Amphoe Wiang Sa. Then take Highway No. 4035 to
Amphoe Ao Luek and continue on Highway No. 4 to Krabi. This route is 814km from Bangkok. From Phuket proceed on Highway No. 402 and No.4. The distance from Phuket is 185km or 4 hours. By Bus -- From Bangkok, air-conditioned bus services to Krabi leave the Southern Bus Terminal at Borommaratcha Chonnani Road daily from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. The journey takes about 12 hours. Firstly, the location -- it is very close to Chaweng, one of the best beaches on the island. Chaweng Noi is much quieter and serene than its more famous counterpart Chaweng Yai, so it’s a perfect family retreat. The crowds are fewer, there are less motorized watersports, and there are a few beach vendors to bother you. It is almost like a private beach. With the resort’s amazing setting, on a gently sloping hillside with lush tropical gardens and an abundance of native coconut trees, it’s a place where any family can create wonderful holiday memories. There is so much to explore and enjoy for all, although if you are one for privacy, no worries as well,

t’s amazing how some small touches can make a difference. At our recent visit at the Hilton Milan Hotel, for example, we found a few small touches that made the hotel stand out more than other Hilton hotels. Set in a shopping area next to Duomo Museum, Arena Civica, and Brera, tourists to the city of Milan will find its location convenient. The hotel is a mere 3-minute walk from the metro station and 3.7 km from Santa Maria delle Grazie, which houses Leonardo da Vinci's “The Last Supper.”

Hilton MiIan (Via Luigi Galvani, 12, 20124 Milano, Italy; Tel: +39 02 69831) is also just a 30-minutes’ walk to the city center, and thus offers quick access to restaurants and other entertainment places. But there’s more to the hotel than convenient location. The minimalist architecture for one, lends it an air of elegance that especially appeal to those looking to experience the Old World charm. Boosted by its proximity to opera houses, museums, and monuments, the hotel offers a taste of Old Europe as we expect it to be indeed. Despite having been in existence since the late 60s – it opened in 1968 – the hotel is still quite elegant and sophisticated. All the 319 rooms are designed with bright décor featuring wooden floor along with modern dark furnishings, and the marble
bathrooms are still as sparkling as ever. There are some aspects that some travelers might find dated, but they do not jar the hotel experience at all. The upscale rooms come with Wi-Fi (although for a fee), flat-screen TVs and desks as expected; and the suites feature separate living rooms. Upgraded suites add balconies and access to a private lounge with free breakfast and refreshments. The buffet breakfast is yet another touch that many guests appreciate. A real morning feast. Served in the large dining room, Hilton Milan’s breakfast aims to please people from different cultures and they do succeed in that. We also found the lounge restaurant relaxing and great for enjoying Mediterranean fare. The spacious and bright Cosmopolitan
Lobby bar, which serves a wide range of tea and coffee, is ideal for chill-out moments, especially after a day of city tour. Suffice it to say that the hotel has a facility for the service and comforts expected by all Milan visitors – and for fitness conscious guests, not to worry as there’s a gym and fitness center to make sure they don’t miss a day of their regimen. And those coming with family, especially with young kids – will be pleased to know that the hotel is “cribs-friendly” and even has a mini club. Hilton Milan is pet-friendly too. Pets are welcome -- for a fee. Given its good location and the very reasonable room rate, Hilton Milan Hotel is highly recommended for all Milan visitors. We are planning to come back here soon ourselves!

Bangkok -- Southeast Asia's booming tourism trade has experienced a new twist with a rising segment of second-generation upmarket hostels now attracting a wider demographic. With a market size of over 1,200 properties and nearly 52,000 beds, the new and improved product is turning the heads of traditional hotels. According to a report on Hotel Market Trends in Southeast Asia by leading hospitality consulting group C9 Hotelworks, there was an explosive 42% surge in new beds coming online in the 'flashpacker' category between 2015 and the third quarter of this year. Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam are the top three players in the region, with Indonesia narrowing the margin with year-on-year growth of 73%. Speaking about this evolving new accommodation space, C9's managing director, Bill Barnett, said: "Hostels are unlike hotels as average rates are calculated on a per bed basis, compared to hotels which use a per room rate."

esides one of the oldest and best-known nature sanctuaries in Thailand -- an Asean and UNESCO World Heritage Site even – there is so much to do and enjoy in Khao Yai: the cool weather, the diverse flora and the fauna, the variety of eco-tourism attractions, the vineyards – and more recently, new programs and activities for all kinds of holidaymakers. You can also enjoy "wildlife spotting" – an evening activity -available via pick-up trucks in the early evening. For a better feel of the national park, try camping overnight. There are camping zones in the area and you can bring your own tent or rent one. Lodges and cabins are available for singles and groups.
2 VISIT THE VINEYARDS
The wine regions of Khai Yai are worth a visit not only because of the grapes and wine but also for the scenery and special offering at each vineyard. The wine region has four major vineyards, namely: PB Valley, GranMonte, and Alcidini to the west and Village Farm to the east -- all set amid beautiful and varied landscapes. The wine harvest season, which runs from November to March every year, enhances the region’s peaceful aura, environmentally friendly atmosphere, not to mention its beautiful scenery and temperate climate. The wineries have their own on-site accommodation (with restaurants and other services and facilities) and offer activities and tours – wine tours are becoming popular – for a different, enjoyable holiday experience. All the
vineyards now offer professionally conducted, tailor-made, wine tours, which can include – depending on the winery organizing them – private wine tasting, wine and fine dining pairing, vineyards and winery visits and strolls, cellar-door shopping, wine classes, and in some, even wine spa and Thai massage.

Wine and fine dining is intrinsic part of the Khao Yai experience these days. The vineyards have of course led the way to raising the level of gourmet quality here but today, new developments suggests that dining sophistication in this otherwise tourism backwaters continues to be on the climb up. PB Valley has two restaurants offering scenic views, and Western and Thai specialties partly matched to the wines grown in the estate. The 200-seater Great Hornbill Grill Restaurant with over 100 menus of authentic and fusion style international cuisine together with famous exotic Thai dishes in their unique style. GranMonte’s VinCotto Restaurant, located in the most scenic part of the estate, specializes in home-style cooking. Village Farm has two restaurants that epitomize country living at its best. But there are also a number of standalone places to wine and dine, most

As the sun sets over Khao Yai’s jungleclad hills, this Japanese restaurant at Kirimaya Resort becomes a spectacular setting where you can awaken your taste buds, either from an open fire grill (Yakiniku) or a flat iron grill (Teppanyaki). Palio Khao Yai is a shopping center on the way to the Khao Yai National Park. The Italian style mall has more than 100 stores and restaurants built to recreate a Tuscan feel. Opened in early 2010, Palio Khao Yai is often visited by many Bangkokians who go to Khao Yai for a weekend getaway. While those used to shopping in Bangkok might not really go there to splurge, the place is great for a good meal or drink before or after your exploration of the national park (Address: 17, Mu Si, Pak Chong District, Nakhon Ratchasima; Tel: 044 365 888).

PAKCHONG MARKET
Night markets are essential fun holiday experiences in Thailand. Pakchong Market boasts a great selection of local food, which you can eat on site or take back to you hotel – and they are cost-effective too.
TRAVEL TIPS HOW TO GET THERE From Bangkok, drive north on Phahonyhotin Road and then take the elevated expressway passing Don Muang Airport. Before Ayutthaya, head northeast in the direction of Saraburi, then continue on the Mittraphap Expressway leading to Nakhon Ratchasima up to Pak Chong, about 45km from Saraburi. From Pak Chong, the national park is at the end of Thanarad Road, south of Pak Chong. The park entrance is about 20km from the expressway exit, and the park headquarters are located about 10km south from the park entrance. The fee to the national park is THB 400 for foreigners (THB 200 for children), and THB 40 for Thais or Thai residents, plus THB 50. Food is available from private concessions within the park as are bicycles, one of the best ways to explore the wine, food and scenery. Mountain bikes can he hired close to the visitor center for around THB 100 an hour.

RIVER THAT TIME FORGOT Until a few years ago, before the Chinese-backed hydroelectric dam projects started affecting its water levels, floating down the Nam Ou on a slow boat and disembarking in Luang Prabang was one of Laos’ most enchanting travel experiences by Marco Ferrarese

ll it took to shatter my daydreaming was one simple wave. It twirled over itself, breaking against the side of our boat, and splashing one cold reality-check all over my face and chest. “Aaargh…” I screamed, turning around to face the group of girls seated silently at the back of the boat, and wishing to receive any form of sympathy for my drenched self. Only one of the girls glanced back at me; she kept a composed expression until she couldn’t help it anymore, and started laughing at my dripping face. There’s no sympathy from those who are still dry and clean. But I had gotten what I was dreaming of: after so much glancing at the river’s play, I had been blessed by the Nam Ou’s cold kiss. The Nam Ou River is Laos’ second water artery after the Mekong. It starts close to the Chinese border

to the north, drains all of Phongsali province, and flows down through the west part of Luang Prabang province. It finally joins the Mekong right above its UNESCO World Heritage-listed main city. Until a few years ago, before the Chinese-backed hydroelectric dam projects started affecting its water levels, floating down the Nam Ou on a slow boat and disembarking in Luang Prabang was one of Laos’ most enchanting travel experiences. But today, the final stretch of Nam Ou connecting the village of Nong Khiaw to Luang Prabang is too low to be navigable. To enjoy a slow cruise down the river, soaking Laos’ quaint river life, floating past karst rock pinnacles and small fishing villages, travelers have to stick to the less visited section between the villages of Muang Khua and Nong Khiaw. I arrived in Muang Khua hopping
across the nearby Northwestern Vietnamese border near Dien Bien Phu. This dusty one horse town doesn’t give more than an average first impression. The main street, filled with sellers peddling their Chinese-imported plastic and aluminum goods, has an atmosphere that’s like a seesaw between Laos’ renowned blissful quiet, and North Vietnam’s noisy hustle. There had to be something more, and I had an idea where to find it. “Continue down this path and you’ll find the river,” an old man told me as I took a downward fork in the road, and soon enough found myself on a rocky stretch of beach where the boats that have made the trip to Nong Khiaw on that day had just returned. They shook gently over the water as local children played along the quaint shore, giggling excitedly. A man was standing next to his motorbike, knee-deep in the river,

carefully dousing it with scoops of fresh water. This was the river bend where, the next day, I should start my boat ride south to Nong Khiaw. At 9 a.m. the next morning, a group of other tourists and I were ready before the floating boats. The man who I had seen washing his bike the day before came towards us: he was our boatman. We piled in, one after the other, and he revved up the engine, leaving Muang Khua behind. On that morning, the Nam Ou was as placid as a coffee-colored ribbon lain between two rows of green hills. We kept silent, not much because of the sputtering sounds of the engine, but rather because the scenery at the sides was a mesmerizing alternation of soaring limestone peaks shrouded in viridian jungle, with bushes hung from their sheer faces in ways that defied all laws of physics. And the more we got away from Muang Khua, the more the river flowed faster, and
our boatman struggled to negotiate the waters. When the engine sputtered and switched off not one, but twice, we all realized that it was time to have a break. Boats on this route usually make a pit-stop at Muang Ngoi: this idyllic riverside community had limited electricity and no road access until 2013, but in recent years, thanks to travelers’ word of mouth, has quickened its pulse. For in as much as Muang Goi had a fantastic backdrop of green hills and stunning river views, I wanted to stay well put on the water. The boatman revved the engine once again, and I continued with a few others along the final stretch to Nong Khiaw – another slightly bigger village that sits gracefully below soaring hilltops and next to the river bend. That’s where, these days, all journeys on the Nam Ou come to an end, and travelers must continue by road to Luang Prabang.
During my last hour on the river, the sun created shimmering snakes of light whenever our boat cut through the mounting waves. When we finally came to a halt against the boats moored along Nong Khiaw’s jetty, and were asked to get off, I thought the sun had shone brighter on the waters. Maybe that was its way of saying that the highlight of my trip had just come to an end.

The Nam Ou starts on the border with China, draining all of Phongsaly province and flowsing down through western Luang Prabang to meet the Mekong above the province. No less than eight major tributaries join Nam Ou before entering Luang Prabang province and beginning its final run down to the Mekong, two of which Nam Khang and the Nam Houn, pass within the huge Phou Den Din NBCA along the Vietnam border. Phongsaly, the on the upper Nam Ou, is the provincial capital.

The Place: The team behind Daniel Thaiger, Bangkok's popular burger truck, has launched a new hip restaurant: Crying Thaiger. Named after the Isan-style grilled beefsteak, it’s located on a little alley in Sukhumvit 51, in an area formerly occupied by Opposite Mess Hall. The restaurant is on the second floor, and features a stylish and bold mix of industrial meets rustic style with wooden seating and a long bar in front of the open kitchen. The logo of this new restaurant looks like Daniel Thaiger wearing a superhero mask, which adds to the fun, lively atmosphere.
The Food: Crying Thaiger offers the highest quality of ingredients and freshest organic veggies from local farms. angkok’s restaurant scene never ceases to amaze. Not only are more and more restaurants appearing on the scene but also, more and more new players are taking the city’s gourmet level to new heights. With competition getting tougher than ever, existing operations need to be more innovative, more imaginative,
and more aggressive in positioning their properties to keep attracting an ever-getting-to-be sophisticated group of foodies. Thus, we are seeing new dining destinations being re-tweaked, re-designed, and re-launched. One dining destination that has recently decided to re-invent itself is Venues, as the group of restaurants at Radisson Blu Plaza Bangkok is now called. Radisson Blu Plaza Bangkok (489 Sukhumvit Road Tel: 02 302 3333; www.radisson. com/plazahotel-bangkok) has always been proud of its F&B outlets, although spreading the word out about how good they are has always been a challenge. With Venues, the hotel hopes to change that. “What we did here was basically re-launch our restaurants to help give them a new life,” says Thomas Smith, the hotel’s executive chef. New chefs were hired, new F&B concepts ideas were implemented, all menus in all the restaurants were changed, and at least one new outlet was born, Brewski, at the hotel’s rooftop.
ATTICO
Attico, of course, needs no introduction. Since its opening in 2014, the Tuscan-inspired restaurant has become a firm favorite of many and has even garnered top Bangkok restaurant awards. Cozy and rustic, yet urbane and sophisticated, Attico never fails to elicit praise from those who make a visit. Located on the 28th floor of the hotel, Attico is perhaps the only restaurant of its kind with such dramatic high ceiling. Indeed its design metrics, from the oak barrelfilled entrance to the glass windows that offer spectacular city views, all at once suggest what we expect from a fine dining Italian restaurant -- and it’s very high indeed. And yet, the emphasis is on family-style meals, flavors that are ideal for sharing. Attico features menus that changed with the season, and with new Italian chef Roberto Parenteda on board, the highly regarded restaurants sets a new bar indeed.

Don’t let the name fool you – this is not your traditional Chinese restaurant. China Table, perched on the 3rd level of Radisson Blu Plaza Bangkok is chic and modern, and even with a range of traditional Chinese elements present at the airy, well-ventilated restaurant. The stylish Radisson Blu touch is unmistakable even here. Of course, the lively, downtown brasserie serves a divine range of dim sums, a tantalizing menu of signature dishes, and an exclusive selection of Chinese herbal teas. But with Hong Kong Chef Bruce Hui, now onboard, the dim sum brunch at the restaurant – dubbed as “the best in the city” by
many – ups the ante a bit more, both in flavors and presentation. Try some of them and you will agree with us wholeheartedly. There is a full list of Chinese delights, each dish meticulously made by hand and steamed on order to succulent perfection. Unique tastes on offer include the fresh mixed vegetable and shrimp with roasted sesame salad dressing in ice bowl and homemade okra cuttlefish ball served with satay sauce. Enhancing their appeal are the interesting presentations, the first one for example, was served Japanese-style and then there’s one dish (a salapao in fact) served like real mushrooms. But worry not if you are after the traditional dishes. Chef Bruce makes sure you will still enjoy Peking duck -- glazed roast, juicy, and with crispy skin – using his own secret recipe and carved at your table. Oh, and there’s a unique fusion of Chinese and Indian dishes based on Hakka cuisine prepared in parts of Hong Kong an Taiwan. Other F&B outlets at the Radisson Blu Plaza Bangkok also received a deliberate reboost and the new craft beer bar, Brewski, which has just opened as of this writing, should further strengthen Radisson Blu Plaza Bangkok’s reputation as a foodie magnet non-pareil. Forget the Sukhumvit traffic, and the rather not-so-easy way to get to the hotel. Venues – all the six restaurants and bars it encompasses, are definitely all worth the effort!

Homemade pasta, gnocchi, premium antipasto, and prime imported meat and seafood are Attico trademarks. The restaurant is likewise noted for its tempting displays of cured meats, artisanal cheeses, signature home-cooked breads, and a cellar that holds extensive selection of Italian vintages, including rare Tuscan wines as well numerous Old and New World varieties. Once notices a “back-to-basics” approach, without prejudice to good flavors, obviously a result of what Chef Roberto – who has worked with Zanotti and Limoncello, besides his experience in Europe – brings to Attico. Attico is an Italian translation of the word “Loft,” and guests can indeed expect “a lofty experience” here when they make a visit and enjoy it!
