all that glitters
G
old is not the only thing that glitters, and this month’s issue should prove that beyond doubt. Not just because we are giving due focus to a glittering event, the “59th Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair (BGJF)” that is happening this month, but also because we are also spotlighting Phuket, Thailand's “Golden Girl of South Tourism.” The former allows us to share more insights about the kingdom’s ever-vibrant gems and jewelry industry, which is one reason why many shoppers from overseas often come and visit. This event alone makes the country shine and glitter, and it happens twice a year, in fact. The latter subject is our timely tribute to one of the country’s biggest tourist lure, which is undergoing so much transformation in many aspects of life as in strives to retain its status as Thai tourism's veritable “golden goose,” a top favorite of many of the world’s jet-setting holidaymakers. To the eyes of many visitors, and ours, Phuket glitters in more ways than one. Elsewhere in this issue, glitter comes a bit subtler. We might see some glint in the eyes of foodies who will delight in special offers being presented in celebration of Valentine’s Day. We might notice some sparkle in the face of those who enjoy the perks being dished-out by the country’s top hotels and resorts. We might derive shining star dusts from happy readers who join us in our journey to some of the most beautiful

and endearing places in the kingdom and beyond. And ah yes, not everything has to shine or glitters. Life is both shine or rain, glitter and gloom – that’s just the way things are, and we can’t do anything about it. But we can bring our own glitter in everything we see, in everything we do, and help spread sunshine anyway we can. With that in mind, we hope your travel “glitters.” Whatever glitter means to you do them, get them, enjoy them, live them, love them. Life is too short to be spent without it. Enjoy your travels wherever they take you – and be safe, alayas. Remember, life is its own best glitter.

hailand has a robust gems and jewelry industry and with the country now ranking among the leading 15 largest exporters of gems and jewelry in the world, is undoubtedly a world leader. With the first of the bi-annual “Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair” (BGIF) held this month, the kingdom is again in the spotlight, allowing it to showcase the best it can offer in the sector. BGJF is a worldclass international exhibition of gems and jewelry, and each event attracts up to 30,000 visitors from around the world during its five-day run. This year is the 59th edition of the event.
Just about every type of jewelry will be on view during the show, slated Feb. 22-26 at the Impact Arena, including gold, silver and diamonds. Innovative custom-made jewelry that demonstrates the high level of skill and craftsmanship that Thailand has become known for will be on display too. As well, the event also highlights Bangkok as the emerging colored gemstone capital of the world. BGIF is a must-attend for any visitor who is fortunate enough to be in town over the days of the show. The mixture of impressive Thai hospitality, excellent services, shows and entertainment, plus some of the most beautiful and expensive gems and jewelry in the world make this one of the most exciting and unforgettable trade shows in town.

Thailand exported an estimated US$650 million worth of gemstones in 2012 alone —about half of that sapphire, according to the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand. While most traders keep their export offices in Bangkok, the traditional center of the colored stone industry, the place where nearly all of the cutting is done, is Chanthaburi, a province in the eastern seaboard 150 miles southeast of Bangkok, near the old ruby and sapphire mining area of Pailin on the

Thailand being a major exporter of gems and Bangkok a major global center for cutting and setting gemstones, good deals on precious stones -- sapphires, rubies, and jade, etc. -- are easy to find here. Experienced buyers and just about anybody who knows much about gems and jewelry probably know where to go to buy what they need, but those with little experience are advised to be careful when buying. A good advice is to buy Thai gems only from reputable dealers that are registered with the Jewel Fest Club or the Thai Gem and Jewellery Traders

Chanthaburi’s gem trade dates to centuries ago— accounts of mining and trading there began in the 15th century—and today its gem market remains one of the world’s largest and liveliest. Two years ago, Somchai Phornchindarak, president of the Gems, Jewelry and Precious Metal Confederation of Thailand (GJPCT) was quoted as saying that Thailand has a global reputation “not only for craftsmanship but (also for) innovation, such as heat enhancement techniques to produce colored gemstones.” Many foreign buyers couldn’t agree more.
THAI GOLD
Astral Gemstones Talisman
Most of the gold shops are found in
Chinese districts, and in Bangkok, the largest is in Yaowarat. Thai gold jewelry and ornaments are reasonably priced as a visit to Yaowarat would reveal. Here, dozens of gold shops line the main boulevard. Prices are based on “Baht” weight (one baht weighing approximately .53 troy ounces) and the quality of workmanship necessary to craft the piece. Thai gold is very yellow, owing to its high level of purity, and relatively inexpensive because the local labor costs are quite low. The gold items come in many varieties, and some companies are even offering unique Thai designs so they are definitely should be worth buying. Thai gold chains, earrings, bracelets, pendants, and other delicate hand-

Each piece is set with the Sri Navaratna Diamond, Ruby, Moonstone, Red Coral, Hessonite, Blue Sapphire, Cat’s Eye, Yellow Sapphire, and Emerald. crafted items sell for reasonable rates even at the most upscale outlets, which are fine places to purchase such goods as they come with guarantees of authenticity.
SILVERWARE
Silverware making in Thailand also dates back centuries and is world renowned for its high quality craftsmanship. Thai silverware, including ornaments, is typically sterling silver (92.5% pure) as regulated by the Thai government to satisfy international clientele. Silverware is most commonly found in Bangkok and Chiang Mai.
STILL THE LEADER
Thailand’s gems and jewelry industry is ranked third as the country's export revenue earner -- to the value of 35 billion baht (about US$98 billion), after automobiles and electronics and in 2015 -- and the industry has been growing between 3 and 5%. While there are reports today about other countries in the region, particularly Myanmar, threatening Thailand’s status as a major gems and jewelry center of the world, both the local private and government sectors are currently trying to address squarely the issues affecting the Thai gems and jewelry industry. With such persistent hard work being undertaken to take care of an industry that is one of the kingdom’s biggest export revenue earners, we can safely assume that Thailand will retain its dominance in the regional gems and jewelry trade. And that is great news for buyers choosing to purchase their goods in Thailand, because very few countries in the world can offer not only the same high quality, diversity, and range of gems and jewelry available here but also the level of other fun activities and attractions that make gems and jewelry shopping in Thailand, such an awesome, amazing experience.
STREETS OF GOLD In the mood for something precious? Here are some places to go if you’re on a hunt for great gems and jewelry buys in Bangkok
I
The streets are practically lined with countless shops selling all kinds of trinket and the designs are plenty.
1. Never buy from a “government” official, tuk-tuk driver, or tout who promises to take you to somewhere where you can get a deal. It might seem laughable reading this now, but this is the number scam that many, surprisingly fall prey to. 2. Never buy right away. No matter how tempting the deal appears to be, or how much money you may think you’re saving, always take time to research the shop. A good seller will be persuasive but never need to pressure you to buy from them immediately. 3. Research your item. Ask the seller to write down the details of the item, such as: stone, size, cut, color, and quality. These greatly affect the price, so be sure to find these things out before you make your purchase. 4. Always ask for a certificate of authenticity. These should always come in the form of a recent laboratory report issued by the Gem
OP Place
t wasn’t long after I moved here that I quickly discovered just how much jewelry circulates these streets. From golden amulets, charms and wards, to your run-of-the-mill garnet rings and semi-precious stones; Bangkok, it would seem, is one of the biggest trading hubs for jewelry in Southeast Asia. Not only that, but there are countless places, with skilled craftsmen, that offer bespoke and made-to-order pieces at competitive prices; on the odd chance that you can’t find what you’re looking for. That being said, and as any quick Google search will also show you, there are plenty of horror stories, with countless fraudsters waiting to take advantage of the abundance of choice and the lack of knowledge. Follow these four simple rules to avoid falling prey to scammers:
Mahesak Road This street between Silom and Suriwong is famous for its abundance of gemstones and semi-precious stones. The Warner Tower is known as the most reliable place, and is definitely worth a visit. The Jewel Fest Club (JFC) Founded in 1995, JFC was founded to ensure strict quality and service standards. JFC is made up of about 100 leading jewelry manufacturers and wholesalers, and is the only ones to have received approval from the Tourism Authority of Thailand. They regulate the prices, so that they are fair and reasonable, but if you’re not satisfied, they offer a complete money-back guarantee. Always look for their logo when buying gems.
and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT) or the Asian Institute of Gemological Science (AIGS). Knowing all of this then begs the question: where can you find jewelry in Bangkok? Here are just some recommendations: Jewelry Trade Center (JTC), Silom Silom in general is the home of countless jewelry shops and sellers, however the JTC is where you’ll find the best deals and most competition. If you’re considering a custom piece, then definitely leave enough time, to allow for the item to be made, and expect a great deal of negotiating. Yaowarat Road Bangkok’s bustling Chinatown area is the place to go for gold jewelry.
OP Place & River City These two places are not strictly focused on gems but there are several shops within them where you can buy gems and jewelry items without worrying about the usual concerns. The first is an exclusive luxury shopping center, located near the world-renowned Mandarin Oriental Hotel Bangkok, while the second is a humungous shopping center that is also great place for buying original Thai arts and crafts. Many tourist, overwhelmed by the sheer scale of choice of stones, designs, carat etc. in Bangkok; and put off by the idea of being scammed, simply instead opt for silver. Compared to gold or semi precious stones, there are fewer risks involved with silver, and they can be found anywhere along Chareonkrung road, MBK, Chatuchak Market, and even on Khaosan. hrough the years, Phuket has become different things to many people. It's been called "Pearl of the Andaman," “Paradise on Earth,” "Golden Girl of Southern Tourism," and more recently, a whole lot of other far less-flattering names. Indeed, many travelers think of Thailand’s southern tourist prima donna as an overdeveloped hedonism gone wild, but they forget that Phuket is more than just the seedy side of Patong Beach. Yes, Patong is an overdeveloped massive party center, but Phuket is one giant peninsula. It is home not only to fine white sand beaches but also to plenty of quiet idyllic spots, offshore islands, as well as a wonderful colonial town (Sino-Portuguese), which is seeing an architectural and boutique style renaissance. Throw in some great food and drink, and some of the world thunique festivals, and you have the making of a truly amazing tourist destination.

Phuket Old Town
Most visitors come to Phuket to laze on the beachbut even the most hardcore sand aficionados should spend at least one afternoon in Phuket Town. The peninsula’s main city had fallen into a bit of disrepair over the years, which was a pity because it is home to some lovely Sino-Portuguese architecture, atmospheric old mansions and manors, plus bustling streets, which are home to exotic Chinese shophouses. The town was the former base of Phuket's tin mining area (which is how the island became rich and famous long before tourism), and it is full of narrow alleys, redlight districts, and traditional shophouse culture. Thanks to the local tourism industry, all of the historic areas have been restored and done up into a photographer's and nostalgia lover's delight. Unsightly power lines that used to block just about every nice vista have been buried underground,
leaving rows of newly painted shops in full view along Talang, Dibuk, Krabi, and Soi Romanee roads, right in the heart of the historic Old Town, which are now filled with tourists reliving the glory of Phuket's past. The governor's mansion, built in 1903, had fallen into shambles until it was restored to full glory by Blue Elephant (Tel. 076 354355, www. blueelephant.com/phuket/). The restaurant today is one of Southeast Asia's most romantic eateries. Not far from here, visitors used to flock to the On On Hotel, a 1920s edifice with a beautiful façade featured in the film “The Beach.” The hotel had become a crumbling backpackers shanty since then, but it too has been restored and done up into a completely boutique stay now known as Memory at On On (Tel. 076 363777, www. thememoryhotel.com), with lovely rooms showing off its old grandeur and charm. The historic Standard Charter
Phuket is also famous for other odes to the tin mining days, such as the bizarre “Vegetarian Festival,” a truly unique spectacle which is usually held between September and October. But hey, you came to Phuket to sit in the sun, right? The island does happen to be blessed by some fantastic sand, sea, and surf.

Sunkissed Beaches
Bank building, another victim of years of wear, has been brought back to life as a museum of Baba Peranakan culture, the blend of Malay, Chinese, and Thai cultures that flourished during the mining years. To learn more about the mining history, make sure to visit the new Mining Museum (Tel. 088 766 0962), which displays old tin mining paraphernalia, and details the history of Phuket’s rise to prominence because of that industry. If the mine theme has really taken hold of you, then consider splurging for a night or two at the Indigo Pearl (Tel. 076 327006, www.indigo-pearl.com), a five-star resort designed by renowned architect Bill Bensley in celebration of the island's tin mining days. Of course, there are many other similarly wonderful high-end hotels -- far too many to mention -- on the island these days, which only reflect the islands popularity among the world's jetsetters.
Patong Beach as well as the Karon and Kata beaches are pretty built up, but the recent government decision to remove the beach umbrellas and vendors from the beaches has them looking much like they did 30 years ago; with lots of space and plenty of clean white sand. While there is still plenty of jet skiing and parasailing to be had, those in search of a quieter slice of paradise will appreciate spots such as Mai Khao, up in the north of the peninsula. Mai Khao remains under the protection of national park status, so it has not been as well developed and is a great place to escape the hordes. Freedom Beach, which is accessed by boat (extremely hard to reach on foot), but near to Patong is another great swathe of white sand and turquoise water, which gets less trammeled because visitors have to charter a longtail boat out to reach it. Layan Beach is another hidden gem. Of late of course, other beaches such as Nai Harn, Chalong, and Rawai, are developing their own identityand making themselves as attractive to travelers. There are other great beaches just off the coast of Phuket that day trippers looking for an island escape are flocking to. Charming spots such as Koh Bon and Koh Mai Thon have great snorkeling
and beautiful beaches, and are only a short speedboat ride away. Even more spectacular, many locals now use speedboats to reach the fabulous Similan Islands, a fantastic place to enjoy some fantastic live aboard dive experiences. Beaches and the Phuket Town aside, there is still plenty more to do on the island. The latest and certainly a most unique attraction to hit Phuket is Baan Teelanka(Tel. 084 4565279, www.upsidedownhouse-phuket.com) better known as The Upside Down House. This is a three leveled, fully furnished, completely upside down house, where the sofas are on the ceilings, fish swim in upside down aquariums, and even the owner’s tuk-tuk is parked upside down. Needless to say, the photo ops here are amazing, and whatever you think of it, it certainly is a nice alternative to temples and beaches.
Left, top: A stroll at the historic Old Town is a must -do. Bottom: The Gibbon Rehabilitation Project offers an alternative to the usual mainstream tourist activities.
Attractions A-plenty
Another place highly deserving of a visit is the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project (Tel. 076 260491, www. gibbonproject.org). You may notice that we are not listing any of the tiger temples and elephant or monkey show attractions in this review, and there is a good reason for this. Many of them have come under heavy scrutiny recently, and have been accused of being unethical, treating animals miserably, and in some cases, being potentially downright dangerous. You can be your own judge if you want to check some of those places out, but the Gibbon Project is one endeavor that deserves support. Located in Khao Phra Theaw National Park (which is a worthwhile destination in its own right, home to waterfalls and rainforest canopies), the Gibbon Project seeks to stop the illegal use of white-handed gibbons for tourist shows and from sales in local markets, and rehabilitates them back into their natural habitat. You can visit the informative center here, see gibbons from a viewing platform, and even stay awhile and volunteer if you set it up beforehand. The most famed vista though remains the Promthep Cape viewpoint, located at the island's most southernmost tip. Vendors set FEBRUARY 2017 | 21

You can stroll around on the walkways, even climb up to the lighthouse at the end of the cape, giving 360-degree panoramas of all of the Phuket surroundings. The Panwa Cape, on the southeastern side, isn’t quite as crowded, and also gives off fabulous views, plus there is a nearby viewing platform called Khao Khad Tower, where you can ascend several levels of stairs and take in all of the places you have just visited.

As well, visitors to Phuket will not fail to notice the many new developments in the island. For example, work on the Phuket International Airport is almost done, with the international passengers terminal now completed; the domestic passengers terminal will soon to be up and ready. Infrastructure on the island is on the fast track as well, with the road widening projects progressing on schedule although they are creating a bit of a jam at the moment. Plans for a rail system that will make mobility

around the major points have leaped out of the blueprint as well. Other signs of continuing development and change are the new community mall, Limelight, several new restaurants, bars, and coffeehouses in almost all areas, and the now obvious dominance of the Chinese tourist market. New hotels continue to pop up as well, with some like the Rosewood Phuket scheduled to open in the third quarter of 2017.Rosewood Phuket(Address 88/28 Muen-Ngern Rd, Patong; 076 356 888; phuket@ rosewoodhotels.com) is the first Asia resort for the ultra-luxury Rosewood Hotels & ResortsÂŽ brand. Nestled along a 600m- beachfront at exquisite Emerald Bay, all 71 pavilions and villas feature private pool with oceans views. The resort is located in one of the last remaining secluded beaches in Phuket. A couple of resorts have rebranded, including Phuket
Merlin, which is now a Marriott; and Phuket Panwa, which is now a Crowne Plaza. The Phokeethra group has opened a Novotel Phokeethra in Phuket town. A new 4-star boutique property Aqua Resort Phuket, in Rawai, is aggressively repositioning itself, among others. All this reflects not only the island’s continuing metamorphosis but also its prevailing popularity among the world’s travelers. It is safe to say that Phuket these days is home to almost all major international hotel and hospitality brands and there is no signs of slowing down as the island continues to be a top world favorite. The deserted beach and hippie days may be long gone but Phuket certainly still has a few tricks up its sleeve to complement a vast array of holiday attractions and keep even the most jaded traveler busy for weeks.

Why the island attracts some of the world’s high rollers who are in search of new fashionable places to travel
N
ext to Phuket, Koh Samui is not only Thailand’s second largest island but also it is the second most popular, attracting more than 1.5 million tourists per year, on a conservative estimate. The island was without roads until the early 70s, when the first backpackers discovered it but today, thanks to its phenomenal growth as a tourist destination, it even has its own international airport, with flights daily to Bangkok and other major airports in Southeast Asia such as Hong Kong and Singapore. Despite its tourism success, the island still presents an unspoiled image, albeit more prosperous and with full service facilities. To date it attracts some of the world’s high rollers who are eternally in search of new fashionable places to travel. There are also many foreign retirees living on the island, probably because of its climate, natural surroundings, and the ease of living on the island.
WHY GO Visitors come mainly
for the white sandy beaches as well as the numerous tropical island adventure opportunities it offers. Accommodations in all price ranges still exist but high-end hotels and resorts – by design chic, hip, and sophisticated -- are slowly edging the traditional places out, making the island a destination for those who enjoy traveling in luxury and style.
DO There's a lot more to Samui than
just getting a tan on the beaches, eating at Fisherman’s Village, hanging out in the Chaweng or Lamai bars, or going island hopping. Activities can range from typical island sightseeing to more exciting and extreme adventures such as trekking, mountain climbing and scuba diving – just ask tour operators near your hotel. There is even a golf course here.
as far as dining out goes in Samui. The “in” place to dine in style these days is Bophut's Fisherman's Village where you gaze out on nostalgic wooden houses and quaint local shops reminding one of days gone by.
DRINK
Samui for sightseeing, but if you are interested, there’s much to see beyond the white sandy beaches. Foremost perhaps is the Hinta-Hinyai (Grandfather and Grandmother Rock), a whimsical aberration of nature that never fails to elicit a smile from visitors; the Big Buddha of course, and the Fisherman’s Village in Bophut. There are the usual museums, temples, Thai night markets, animal zoos, and farms of course, and for those who are staying longer – the nearby islands and islets.
Samui is a great place to party – and those with a penchant for drinking binges cannot be blamed for patronizing the party bars with lots of risqué action – certainly great eye openers. But that doesn’t mean it’s all go-go atmosphere here. There are lots of bars for plain revelers such as Green Mango, Sweet Soul Café, Solo Bar, Sound, Charlie’s Angel’s and The Mint Bar in Chaweng alone. Of course, Reggae Pub – a Samui institution -- is a must visit. In all fairness, there are still so many outstanding places to eat and drink and chill-out that we failed to mention here, and with almost all districts of Samui transforming for tourist needs these days, there is a place to eat and drink for every taste and budget.
SLEEP
WHEN TO GO Samui's weather
SEE People don’t really go to
There’s no dearth of places to stay and sleep in Koh Samui. Affirming its solid reputation as a world-class holiday destinations are the international hotel chains, as well as the new boutique and design hotels that now mushroom around the island.
EAT Visitors are spoiled for choice
is relatively dry the whole year round. When it does rain, it usually doesn’t last long just about 20 to 60 minutes, except during the rainy season – usually from June to October. Thus anytime of the year is a good time to visit.
TRAVEL MINI GUIDE
FINDING PHANG NGA
by Kib Jarmmaree
T
ravelers to Phuket or Krabi are usually encouraged to visit attractions beyond the mainland beaches and go island hopping or scuba diving. What many visitors do not know is that their tour operator might be taking them to Phang Nga, a province some 788km away from Bangkok, for such adventures. Phang Nga is relatively lesser known but is certainly no less endowed. It is rich in natural beauty, set in an area approximately 4,1700sqm, both on land and underwater. Even Khao Lak, another popular attraction in the area, is part of Phang Nga.
WHY GO --
Think James Bond Island--featured in a 1974 James Bond movie and one of the most iconic images of Thailand--or Phang Nga Bay, which is home to many fascinating islands. But there’s also the Similan Islands, one of Thailand’s main diving destinations. And these are but a few. The bottom line is that the province is a real gem as far as natural treasures are concerned -- islands, mountains, forests, caves, waterfalls, and beaches, not to mention the Andaman Sea.
WHAT TO SEE --
Nature lovers will have a heyday here. The province is home to several national parks that offer scenic views and features mass limestone formations scattered around the area. There is a density of caves in the area to explore. Many

of national parks have interesting attractions such as waterfalls (such as Namtok Lampi, a 6-tiered waterfall that runs all-year-round) and nature trails. Island hopping is a must-do, and many islands and islets, such as Koh Phra Thong, a large island northwest of Phang Nga with many beaches; and Koh Yao, which covers an area of 137sqm, beckon for fun daytrips. We already mentioned the Similan Islands, but there’s more. Perhaps the best beaches are in Khao lak and the old town of Takua Pa has its own charm too.
WHAT TO DO --
Try elephant cave trekking (at Tham Phung Chang) and rafting (at Ton Pariwat Wildlife Sanctuary.) Or, go rock climbing (there are several routes). You can also go kayaking, especially in Khao Lak where the coastline consists of mangroves, limestone, small coves, caves, and islands, and the interior of which has rivers lined with fascinating cave systems. Other activities: bird watching, sailing and cruising in Ao Phang Nga National Park; fishing; jungle trekking; bamboo rafting (along Lam Ru Yai Canal at Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park); golf (there are two 18-hole golf courses near Khao Lak); spa, and diving. The Similans are famed for their reefs, coral, and variety of marine life. Surin Islands are virtually untouched and nearby is the horseshoe-shaped Richelieu Rock, which is considered by many as the best dive site in Thailand. Also, visit a local village to
see how traditional way of life is being preserved through community-based tourism. Don’t expect nightlife but there are several beer bars and live music venues scattered around the beach and bay areas.
THAILAND
EAT & DRINK -- You must
try Southern Thai food, which is renowned for its spiciness. The Indian-style Muslim curry (massaman), rice noodles in fish curry sauce (Khanom Jeen) and chicken biryani available in Bangkok originated from the South where the food is very much influenced by Malay, Indonesia, and Indian settlers. Phang Nga’s Panyi Island is famous for shrimp paste, and Takuapa for its Chinese-style baked cakes. Of course, the usual international fares are also available in many places.
SLEEP -- Several budget hotels are
available in town. But international hotel chains are also operating in Khao Lak, such as JW Marriott Khao Lak (076 584 888), Le Meridien Khao Lak (076 427 500), and Ramada Khao Lak (076 427 777). Try Casa dela Flora (076 428 999), a very modernist property with great beach. If you want to stay in Phang-nga itself and want budget hotels, try the Phang Nga Guesthouse (076 411 358); Thawisuk Hotel (just after Phang Nga Guesthouse on the main road); and Pattanapong Hotel (just before Phang Nga Guesthouse on the main road, next to the 7-11).
PHANG NGA Top: Tourists enjoying the beach at sunset GETTING THERE By Car -- First route: From Bangkok take Highway No. 4, passing by Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, and Ranong on the way to Phang Nga town. The trip takes around 12 hours. There's a second route, from Bangkok taking Highway No.4 to Chumphon. By bus -- Bus services from Bangkok are available daily. For more info, call the Southern Bus Terminal at 02 435 119/200. By plane -- The closest airport are in Phuket and Krabi where many airlines operate. Bangkok Airways (02 265 5678) has daily flights connecting Phuket Airport with Pattaya and Koh Samui. FEBRUARY 2017 | 25
TRAVEL OUTBOUND
BAGAN FROM ABOVE
Perhaps the easiest way to check out Bagan, although certainly the most expensive albeit well worth the romantic splurge, is via hot air balloon by Dave Stamboulis
D

awn is a special time in Bagan. The weather is cool, the air is still, and chants from the surrounding monasteries fill the air. Photographers and avid temple tourists climb impossibly steep stairs by flashlight beam, navigating stone steps so vertical as to induce dizziness upon reaching the top. On Shwesandaw Paya, a five-terraced cylindrical pagoda, built by King Anawrahta in 1057, the eager crowd flocks to the southeast wall, awaiting the coming of the sun. It’s homage of sorts, to one of Southeast Asia’s most iconic and magnificent sights. The temples of Bagan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, number over 2000, all spread
26

out on an arid sandy plain nestled up next to the Ayeryarwady River (Irrawaddy to most English speakers). There were originally 10,000 temples here, built from the 9th century onwards, part of an empire of Burmese kings and Buddhist scholars, which flourished from the mid 1000’s to around 1287, after which a series of Mongol invasions led to its decline. Earthquakes have also helped to decimate the temples, as Bagan sits along a fault line, and while the former military government of Burma didn’t mess with the holy site (although they did do some disputed nouvelle restorations), Myanmar’s former status as a pariah state kept Bagan well off the map for most of
mass tourism. These days, the temples and ruins are the darling of the Southeast Asian tourist trade, and Myanmar’s most visited destination. While roads and infrastructure have been improved, with a small airport in the village of Nyaung U handling a dozen flights a day and leading to speeded access, Bagan still remains a sleepy and extremely atmospheric place. The main temples next to the road get the bus tourists coming in for sunset and if they can manage the early wake up call, sunrise, but there are still hundreds of temples that lie down sand tracks, which either have to be navigated on foot or with a bicycle, and the most jaded traveller can still find a set of stone steps to ascend via a hidden passage, to a rooftop terrace overlooking the plains, with nary a tourist in sight. Perhaps the easiest way to check out Bagan, and certainly the most expensive, although well worth the romantic splurge, is via hot air balloon. Khin Omar Win, a Burmese
raised in the UK, had returned to Myanmar in the late 1990’s to pursuit tourism development, and she teamed up with Australian Brett Melzer, who had also come to Myanmar to find an opportunity in tourism, and the duo launched a novel small company with a lone balloon and a crew of eight, taking intrepid travellers soaring over the temples of Bagan. Their outfit, Balloons Over Bagan (www. easternsafaris.com), now has 12 balloons, 16 foreign pilots, and well over 100 local staff. It has become the most talked about tourist must-do while in Myanmar. Just before sunrise, in a field near the holy Shwezigon Pagoda, balloons are pumped up, filled with gas, and set soaring for the flight of a lifetime. The baskets attached to the balloons can hold either eight passengers, or else sixteen separated into four compartments, and the flights take around 45 minutes to an hour, with a celebratory champagne breakfast included in the finish. The views from above are spectacular, watching the sun rising in the east, with the temples either silhouetted or turned flaming orange by the glowing ball of the sun, depending on which side one looks out at. The balloons languidly drift over Dhammayangyi, Sulamani, Ananda Patho, and all the most famed temples of Bagan, with views further on across the Ayeyarwady and even across to Mount Popa, a temple complex perched on a cliff top, when the weather is clear. Bagan is situated in this completely arid zone, meaning that most of the year, almost no rain
falls, and in the bone dry winter, haze rising off the ground creates what looks like mist rising from the temples, making the entire sight look even that much more mystical. Farmers are up early, taking their herds of cattle out to graze, or riding in their photogenic ox-carts with giant teak wheels. Young novice monks begin their morning alms runs, and one even sees long queues of nuns, in their pale pink robes, making their way to pray and study. Myanmar is incredibly rural, slow, and enchanting, and Bagan offers an excellent introduction to the aptly named Golden Land. In Bagan, tourists can choose to stay right next to the Ayeyarwady on the riverbanks in Old Bagan, right in the heart of the Archaeological Zone, where a few older and quite expensive hotels are located. Budget travelers make for the bustling village of Nyaung U, where the airport, market, and largest array of shops and restaurants can be found, and there is also a third alternative, New Bagan, where a newer village was built after the temple zone was closed to building, where there are fantastic resorts like the new Bagan Lodge (http://bagan-lodge.com), offering ultra-comfortable spacious boutique rooms, along with a couple of fabulous swimming pools. As the sun set on another bright and toasty Bagan winter day, I climbed the stairs of North Guni, a small temple hiding in the shadow of the massive Dhammayangyi temple next door. Replicating my journey a decade earlier back when Burma was a no-go, there still weren’t any tourists around. I found a western facing perch and watched the sun sink slowly over the barren mountain range overlooking the river and plains. Farmers returned home with their cattle, the herds kicking up clouds of dust that only served to enhance the atmosphere, bathing the ground and temples in a particle-filled golden light. While the ruins at Angkor Wat in Cambodia may be just as captivating, their ambience is usually marred by busloads numbering in the thousands. Here in Bagan the future may be on the way, but it is still arriving slowly.
Opposite Page (Top): Balloons fly over Bagan temples at sunrise. A young monk reads in the temple. A young monk prays as rays of sunlight seep into in the temples of Bagan People gather in front of a temple after the event.

TRAVEL CULTURE
HEART OF HISTORIC BANGKOK Most visitors to Thailand tend to associate the word island with palm trees and white sands. But in the heart of Bangkok is a different island of sorts, one that contains all its storied past, an area that is perfect for those looking for the Bangkok of old – Rattanakosin by Dave Stamboulis
R

attanakosin Island, so named because it is bordered by the Chao Phraya River on one side, and a series of canals on the other, is home to all the most famous tourist sights in town, and has a charming retro vibe. Today it is one of the few areas in the city that are still without high rises, condo developments, bright lights, and shopping malls. Almost every Thailand visitor makes a pilgrimage to the Grand Palace, which is located here, home to the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, and the most venerated place in the kingdom. Along with nearby Wat Pho and its massive Reclining Buddha, the Grand Palace is the top draw in Rattanakosin, but there are other spots worth checking out, and all can

be done on foot. A 10-minute walk east of the palace brings one to Sao Ching Cha, a neighborhood so named for its iconic Giant Swing, the towering red swing that was built by King Rama I in 1784 for use in Brahmin religious rites. The use of the swing was discontinued in 1935 but its giant pillars have remained a landmark. The quiet side streets around it -containing old working shophousecommunities and some of Bangkok’s oldest and best culinary wonders -- are a pleasure to meander. During the day Bamrung Muang, the street that leads from the swing toward Chao Phraya River, is filled with Bangkok’s best gold leaf painters who dedicate themselves to painting and engraving giant Buddha
images that are used in temples throughout the country. Believe it or not, this area was actually one of Bangkok’s first commercial districts, long before the advent of shopping malls. Of course workers need to eat here, and there are plenty of single dish food shops that have been going strong for seven or eight decades. Take for instance, Kor Panich (431433 Tanao Rd, Tel. 02 221-3554), which has been serving up khao niaow mamuang (sticky rice and mangoes) to a legion of followers since 1932! Around the corner from here is another hidden gem, Phraeng Phuton, where neoclassical European-style row houses are clustered around a public square. Phraeng Phuton feels far more like an Italian piazza and has recently been made into a heritage zone, with all of the shophouses painted in bright similar colors. Rama V built these shophouses in the early 1900s, all of which feature narrow facades, balusters in the windows, and have tables set outside, giving the area a very communal feeling. Highlights here include Nattaporn (94 Phraeng Phuton, Tel. 02 222 2686), a homemade ice cream shop that has been around for
over 70 years, with a third generation of owners continuing the family business of some of Bangkok’s best ice cream, sold at a fraction of the cost you’d find across town. In the square are a series of restaurants, many of which are famed for a single dish. While pig brains aren’t high on most tourists’ food list, the Samong Moo Thai Tham shop here -- this shop has received the coveted Shell Shuan Shim award for outstanding cuisine -- always has a long queue and has a non-stop array of celebrity chefs and food critics stopping by for the spicy brain soup and noodles. If this is too much to stomach, stop in at the tiny Krua Som Hom (Tel. 02 622-1279) where an elderly woman whips up crab curry and tamarind shrimp in her small kitchen for a pittance. Make sure also to check out the classic Vichian Garage, in business for eight decades maintaining and repairing vintage automobiles, a few of which are parked out front. The owner is noted for his collection of some 20 odd Austin Martins. If the retro vibe inspires you, there is even
a restored boutique hotel to stay in here, The Bhutorn (96-98 Phraeng Phuton, Tel. 02 622-2270), owned by several architects who restored a 1906 shophouse to its origins, with beautiful gingerbread eaves and metal balusters. North from here is the Golden Mount (Wat Saket), a glittering gold chedi that sits on top of a hill overlooking all of Rattanakosin. Nearby, make sure to wind up your tour with a stop at another Bangkok institutions, the hole-in-the-wall Jae Fai (327 Mahachai Rd, Tel. 02 223 9384), run by a 75-year-old auntie who has been cooking for over six decades, Jae Fai specializes in pad khee mao (“drunkards noodles”). The dish normally costs THB 40 elsewhere, but here it goes for 10 times that price, due to the incredibly fresh, large shrimp and squid used, along with the restaurant’s fame (just about every food critic has been here, from the N.Y. Times on down). The fresh crab omelets are also worthy of a Michelin star. It’s worth coming here just to see the Mercedes start lining up outside around 5 p.m.

TRAVEL MINI-GUIDE
LIFE ON LIPE by Stan Smiley
THAILAND
KOH LIPE
HOW TO GET THERE Koh Lipe is normally reached via speedboats that take 90 minutes from the pier at Pak Bara, which is accessible via minivan from both cities of Trang and Hat Yai in southern Thailand. Air Asia offers combo flight and minibus/boat transfer tickets from Hat Yai to Sunrise Beach. Speedboats run several times daily from Pak Bara out to Pattaya Beach. There is also a slow ferry running from Satun during high season, as well as boats from the Malaysian island of Langkawi over to Lipe. There are usually a few speedboats from Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi.

There’s more to this gem of the Andaman than managing to retain its beautiful island paradise atmosphere
s word got out that Koh Phi Phi and Krabi were becoming overrun by the tourist masses, reports began to filter in about another yetunharnessed gem in the Andaman way down south: Koh Lipe, the new paradise island blessed with emerald water and white sand beaches. Lipe subsequently became the next “go to” destination, located far from the maddening crowds closer to Malaysia than to Bangkok. While it certainly is no longer untouched, it has been pleasantly built up to have some great resorts, but has arguably still managed to retain its beautiful paradise island atmosphere. One reason is that Koh Lipe (“paper island” in the local sea gypsy language) is surrounded by uninhabited national marine park islands containing abundant marine life and fabulous natural beauty. This is what makes the island one of Thailand´s most enjoyable beach holiday haunts today.
WHY GO Come here for that
feeling of being on a real island (Lipe lies well offshore and requires a 90-minute speedboat ride to get there, or an even slower ferry journey) and for escaping some of the drunken hordes and masses that ascend upon Phi Phi, Phuket, and Samui. What makes Koh Lipe special is that it is home to the Chao Lay (sea gypsies), who follow their ancestors´ traditions on the east side of the island. The prettiest waters in Thailand, excellent

white sand beaches, and some of the country’s most preserved coral for both snorkeling and diving. Starlets´ nests can be picked from some of the surrounding islands´ caves.
SEE Koh Lipe is in the Adang
archipelago -- the only island where development is allowed – and everything around it is part of the national park and completely pristine. Neighboring Koh Rawi and Koh Adang have gorgeous beaches and are perfect for Robinson Crusoe fantasies, accessible by an easy kayak paddle. Koh Butang has crab eating macaques and bee-eaters en masse on land, and an abundance of marine life, ranging from stingrays to turtles to sharks. There are plenty of small islets and photogenic rock pillars rising out of the sea all within a stone’s throw of Lipe, and can be examined closer by an afternoon boat tour. The Chao lay village is worth a walk through. Other than this, gazing off into the sunset and sunning your buns with a good book in hand are the main pastimes on Koh Lipe.
DO Diving and kayaking are the
top options on Lipe. There are many outfitters on the island that offer PADI, SDI, and even free diving courses along with live-aboard trips. There is some good jungle hiking on Koh Rawi, as well as a lovely beach. Longtail boat excursions to the other national park islands are also a big draw. There is a deep-sea pinnacle
named 8 Mile Rock about an hour from Lipe that has incredible bird and marine life around it and is a popular daytrip. Sailing has also become fashionable around Lipe, and there is now an outfitter offering full sailing school classes.
EAT & DRINK For a small
island, Lipe has a great selection of good food, both Thai and international. Fresh seafood barbecues are extremely popular, with most beach restaurants serving up grilled sea bass, snapper, and barracuda along with prawns and squid for diners. Along the island’s aptly named Walking Street, options include everything from fresh pasta and gnocchi to Spanish tapas to chicken masala. There's nightlife too.
SLEEP
The main resorts can be found on Pattaya, Sunrise, and Sunset beaches. Pattaya is the most crowded of the trio. As can be expected accommodatin ranges from low-key to pricey.
WHEN TO GO The monsoon
season between mid-May and late October makes Lipe drastically quieter. A good number of resorts shut their doors altogether for these rainy months. Transport is limited to one speedboat per day while the ferries stop altogether, so check before heading out during the offseason.

SIROCCO
WINE&DINE RESTAURANT
ROOFTOP ROMANTIC Looking for great experiences for a romantic rendezvous on the rooftops of Bangkok -- a mixture of breathtaking views, the finest food and wine, and unique individual alfresco themes? Here’s a heads up! by Percy Roxas
T
here is something about rooftops. The view from above, whether in an open air setting or airconditioned glass wall enclosures – not to mention good food, great drinks, and wonderful company – contribute to that top-of-the-world feeling that we all find irresistible and romantic. With Valentine’s Day upon us, Lookeast essays a roundup of some – the operative word here is “some” -- of Bangkok’s most popular rooftop venues today. Some have

been with us for a while, remaining hot and well patronized while others are quite new, and are just creating a buzz. Anyway, old or new these rooftops share the same thing: they make us see Bangkok from a different perspective, both literally and figuratively -- and make our night out always an amazing experience.
SIROCCO
“The finest Mediterranean cuisine under the stars,” is how many describe Sirocco, located on the 63rd
floor of lebua State Tower Bangkok. Perhaps the world's highest al fresco restaurant and certainly one of Bangkok's most coveted dining choices, Sirocco never fails to mesmerize whether with its views or with its cuisine. With a breathtaking view of Bangkok and the Chao Phraya River -- a sweeping deck dramatically fanning out to the middle of the sky -- and gourmet Mediterranean fare with fresh ingredients meticulously flown in from the world's best
BLUE SKY
enjoy a drink with nothing between eye level and the sky. Vertigo is on one side while on the other side is a smaller dining area – ideal for private parties. In both there is an extensive a la carte as well as a set menu. Together they can seat 150 and diners can easily see in all directions at once even when seated, with the surrounding barrier and the glass screens low enough to give an entirely open view while giving some shelter from the breeze. Open in the evenings only, Vertigo’s setting is startling. The ambience in the fading evening light is extraordinary, and the menu and the wine superb.

markets, Sirocco has been winning acclaim since its opening a few years back. The restaurant, reputed to be the most spacious rooftop restaurant in Asia, has in fact been listed under ‘Hot Tables' & ‘Hot Night' by Condé' Nast Traveler among a host of other awards from international magazines. Some 150 guests can seat in the restaurant at any one time without feeling crowded. Complementing the stunning views and food is the live jazz music, providing the perfect backdrop for a truly memorable evening. In fact, Sirocco is but one of the extensive selection of the city’s best bars and restaurants at lebua with incredible cuisine and breathtaking city views.
VERTIGO
Vertigo Grill and Moon Bar, on the 61st floor of Banyan Tree Bangkok on Sathorn Road, took its name from the famous Alfred Hitchcock movie. From
the hotel lobby, the restaurant can be reached via a lift, which takes you all the way to the 59th floor in one go, ears “popping” on the way up. On this floor, are two of the hotel’s other signature restaurants, both with their own splendid menus and views of the city and which, during rainy season, are used as alternative venues when the weather dictates. From the 59th floor a relatively narrow, winding staircase leads you upwards into a draught of fresh air and the sight of the wide sky through an open door that gives a feeling of space and even more startling views as you step out onto the roof. The Tai Wah Tower is an unusual building, with the proportions similar to a domino, and its very narrowness gives you a very distinct feeling of really being on the summit with everything below you. Standing on its own on a platform in the center is the Moon Bar, which can seat 50 around it on raised chairs, where you can
For those who live around the Ladprao/Phahonyothin area, there’s no need to beat the traffic to the center of the city for a romantic rooftop rendezvous on Valentine’s Day. Blue Sky Bar and Dining, at the Centara Grand at Central Plaza Ladprao, sets the scene for a romantic date. Located on the 5-star hotel’s 34th floor, the place features two separate wings to meet the individual requirements of its guests, both with indoor and outdoor spaces. For this Valentine’s Day, executive chef Eric Berrigand is putting together a collection of his five “Bistro-style” dishes, inspired by his passion for traditional cuisine. These include Scottish salmon wrapped in Bayonne ham; seared cod fish with cream asparagus with Parmesan cheese and balsamic reduction, imported Hamachi fish and oyster tarter with Baeri Royal caviar quenelle on shell, and pan-fried foei gras lasagna with mushroom sauce and black truffle emulsion, and will be available until March only. There’s a dazzling range of beverages, from cocktails to premium spirits, from wines to Champagne, and an award-winning wine selection is served. elements and finishes that are warm and inviting. The design layout ensures that wherever you want to seat, indoor or outdoors, you can enjoy quality seating – so no wonder The World of Architecture Art Design website named it as one of the 15 Worlds Most Exciting Rooftop bar. Blue Sky indeed provides a perfect venue for stylish, elegant dining; and well-deserved afterwork drink in truly amazing surroundings.
For those with a casual bent of mind, Brewski should prove to be more than appealing. The latest addition to “Venues,” the eclectic collection of food and drinks spots in a single location at the Radisson Blu Hotel Bangkok, this is rooftop bar devoted to craft beer, meaning it is a place to enjoy the trendy brews that are becoming a favorite of many. On the drinks menu are one dozen craft beers on tap in addition to a whopping 100 bottled-varieties from around the world – so this is heaven for beer lovers. Brews, views, and DJ tunes high above the city on Sukhumvit Road, Brewski takes things to another level, the 30th to be exact, where the action happens.
THE ROOF
The Roof is just one part of Siam@ Siam Design Hotel and Spa’s innovative “Sky Dine” concept of bar and restaurants on the 25th floor. The design and décor veer away from the norm -- described in their publicity material as “Industrial Hip” and “Hip Art” – and the effect is stunning, with lots of stainless steel, metal sculptures, and unusual color schemes. One gets the impression that it was done by an army of people each doing their own thing and is well worth looking at, including the figurines on the Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s wash room doors, fig leaves and all. There are two dining sections, La Vue and The Roof Restaurant along with The Roof Champagne and Wine Bar, within almost 1,000sqm of space. Slightly below the roof of the hotel

itself, La Vue can seat 50 and is fully enclosed but has splendid windows that afford an entirely open and all around view. Innovatively it has a number of small semi-circular tables placed against the windows that provide intimate dining for two. The menu is a la carte; Mediterranean in theme, and while not vast it has an excellent well chosen selection with a broad spread of price to suit most pockets. The wine selection is again, not extensive, but good. From La Vue, a short staircase leads upwards into the open-air and the alfresco Roof itself, which can seat 130. It has a stone grill and while offering a slightly different a la carte menu from La Vue, both are interchangeable. The adventurous are also welcome to visit the see-through kitchen where they can watch their food being cooked. In the center of the restaurant is a cocktail and champagne bar where up to 60 diners can enjoy pre-dinner drinks. The Roof is an excellent venue for relaxed dining, no doubt about it.
RED SKY
Red Sky can be reached via a staircase from the 55th floor of the 5-star Centara Grand at CentralWorld, where the now popular Spanish bistro Uno Mas also resides. To reach it, you have first to go to the hotel’s lobby on the 23rd floor and then take another lift to the 55th, from where the view is also already breathtaking. The city of Bangkok lies before you, seemingly in miniature, with previously considered tall buildings dwarfed and unknown roof top gardens, far below, suddenly exposed in all their glory. Since the place is located in the heart of the city, Red Sky’s panoramic view easily reflects the robust urban spirit and dynamic vibrancy of the “City of Angels.” The atmosphere is definitely sleek and classy, and you can easily get into that top-of-the world feeling – especially with the newly opened Champagne Bar on the topmost level. Red Sky is perfect even for a casual bubbly, do not forget that it is now home to a premier selection of

innovative dishes – seasonal tasting menu -- created with the very best seasonal ingredients. Each dish has been designed and prepared by Chef Alan Wesley Kwan and his team so as to create the perfect harmony of tastes and textures, and hence ideal for a romantic dinner on Valentine’s Day. Needless to say, the wine selection is extensive and truly worldclass. The menu is comprehensive too and for such a splendid location, is remarkably, reasonably priced. Service is wonderful too, so it is in fact one of our personal favorites! Red Sky is definitely a high quality experience at a very reasonable price – and that could as well be an understatement.
VANILLA SKY
The newest kid on the “rooftop block,” Vanilla Sky is not just another rooftop bar. It is one of the first nightclubs located on a rooftop in Bangkok. Located on the 36th floor of the Compass Skyview Hotel Bangkok, one of the city’s newest five-star hotels, the rooftop venue offers an amazing 360-degree view over the skyline of a different part of the city. The views are fantastic, as one can expect from a rooftop venue, especially at sundown; the cocktails are tasty, and the party atmosphere is superb. Some 80-100 persons can come together for their brand of revelry in the terrace (the entire terrace can be rented for a special occasion). Vanilla Sky should appeal to the millennials and Gen X crowd, with its live DJs, delicious cocktails, tasty bar snacks and premium views. A superb new rooftop bar to hangout – and its
very accessible, the hotel being just a stone’s throw away from the Phrom Phong sky train station.
ATTITUDE
Attitude opened only in September last year. Very cleverly named, the place provides a welcome reprieve, with sinfully crafted cocktails, fusion food, and a socially sophisticated vibe. Rising 26 storeys above the Chao Phraya River on top of the new Avani Riverside Bangkok Hotel, Attitude is made up of a collection of indooroutdoor areas each with its own distinctive chic décor and atmosphere and all graced with unparalleled river and city skyline views. The indoor restaurant is stylishly decorated in textured charcoal and red furnishings and the interconnected bar has an art deco feel with floor to ceiling windows. From 8pm nightly, the mood is elevated by live musical performances or DJs spinning the decks. The menu is a journey of the culinary senses. Tapas-style dishes include the apple tea smoked caramel duck and the “Funky Pig” a crispy pork skin dish served with crunchy onion, polenta chips and a sweet & sour apple sauce. Beef from northern Spain has become the must-order dish in many top restaurants and the tasty Galician beef rib eye lives up to the hype. The alfresco bar décor is classic with white modern wicker furniture. The minimalistic design accentuates the expansive panoramic views of one of Asia’s most exciting cities and enhances the enjoyment of the creative cocktails that French mixologist Alex Hersent fashions.
Bangkok Marriott Hotel also has a rooftop bar offering great city views. The overall atmosphere can be both elegant and laidback, depending on the time of day and perhaps the prevailing mood of guests. But if you like your chill-out time as fun but perhaps more private and sedate than at other rowdy rooftop venues, then Octave is for you. Since the rooftop bar is located in the part of the city away from the proverbial tourist belt – although it is near the hipster hubs of Thonglor and Ekkamai -- it is usually quite easy to get a seat here. With the terrace nestled on three entire floors, there is plenty of seating here. The menu and cocktail list is very good too, and service is nothing to complain about. There are other rooftop venues worth mentioning of course, but we simply do not have enough space this issue. But there you go: for great experiences -- a mixture of breathtaking views, amazing food and wine, and unique individual alfresco themes – where else would you go for a romantic rendezvous, Valentine’s Day or not?
THE SKY TERRACE
Couples who’d like to take their love to another level, the 29th to be exact, can reserve a table at Novotel Bangkok Ploenchit’s cozy Sky Terrace where amid romantic pastel décor they’ll enjoy a five-course set dinner under the stars. Highlights include main course choice of grilled Australian Wagyu tenderloin or Canadian whole lobster ‘Thermidor’ with risotto rice and Valentine’s desserts including white chocolate strawberry mousse with raspberry sauce. Price is THB 3,990++ per couple including one bottle of red, white, rosé or sparkling wine per couple from 7 to 10 p.m. Seating limited to maximum 14 couples. Booking required. WINE&DINE PATTAYA
BEST OF THE BREEZE The Monttra-Pattaya’s ‘big-little’ restaurant, The Breeze, has a new head of culinary who is ready to delight you with his unique interpretation of Western and Thai favorites! by Percy Roxas

nique experiences come in many forms. At The MonttraPattaya, they call it “magical hospitality” -- experiences that come from exclusive services designed to provide truly long-lasting unforgettable memories. The resort, an intimate 5-star luxurious sanctuary with a private secluded beach, continues to beef up its services to exceed guest expectations. Recent proof of this is the hiring of a Head of Culinary, 25-year-old veteran chef Phantakarn Kaphutta who has a proven track record and long experience in the culinary field. Chef Phantakarn is only 42, but boasts a rich experience way beyond his years.
40
LOOKEAST | WINE & DINE
He spent 23 years as a chef in Koh Samui, with the last two years at Khao Yai, before joining The Monttra-Pattaya about four months ago. He says what made him decide to move here is The MonttraPattaya’s fresh approach to guest satisfaction. “If you have stayed here for even once, then you know how The Monttra-Pattaya treats its guests,” he says. “I can only say that I’m proud to be such a part of a resort with a team that is totally dedicated to creating great holiday memories for its guests.” The Monttra-Pattaya is managed by Miners Hospitality, a one-stop development company with an international angle in hotel management.
ADVERTORIAL As The Monttra-Pattaya’s head of culinary, Chef Phantakarn presides over a small kitchen team, which is understandable given the number of rooms available at the resort. Its sole restaurant, The Breeze, seats only about 40 guests at any one time – a cozy retreat for a pleasurable meal or drinks experience. The Breeze is an open air, fine, uncomplicated venue that serves breakfast, lunch, dinner – and more recently, the new “Afternoon Bites” promotion, where all in-house guests can enjoy free snacks, mini-burger, and tapas-bites from 2 to 5 p.m., and walk-in guests pay THB 444++. Here, Chef Phantakarn created a new menu designed specifically to delight the taste buds of The Monttra’s mixed bag of guests. Although he says he is “stronger” in Western than in Thai cuisine, the chef’s new international menu shows a dazzling, albeit limited (48-50 only), array of dishes that will surely satisfy guest, no matter the country they come from. “Our guests belong to a special breed of travelers who desire a stay within a sanctuary where all their needs are met, especially F&B, since our location is a bit more private,” the chef says. “I created the menu with this in mind. We make sure that our food does not only look good, but also tastes wonderful – because they are meant to enhance the magical hospitality that our resort is becoming so famous for.” The chef prepared four of his signature main dishes at The Breeze during our recent visit. The first one was grilled river prawn with pomelo salad – a delightful concoction made with Thai river prawn, pomelo, sweet chili paste, and fresh chili (“I used one red and one green, my standard, the chef says), coriander, and shallots. This dish combines the popular Thai staple of grilled prawns with yamsom-oh (pomelo salad), prepared and presented differently. The chef didn’t use any fish sauce in the dish, a common Thai habit, and to achieve the desired sourness, he depended on the pomelo’s natural juicy flavor. The result was a dish that is a pleasure for the palate, indeed! Next out was the raw tuna salad
-- truly a delightful surprise. Looking more like a tartare, the chef molded raw diced tuna pieces into a cube of ample size, and then placed them along potato chips, mixed sliced veggies, and cashew nuts on a white plate. The taste was a bit Mexicanish, but also a bit Thai – spicy and reminding you of larb, which is not surprising since he blended the tuna with ground chili and ground sticky rice. It was another dish that shows Chef Phantkarn’s command of his craft. We tried the spicy sea bass soup after that, a tom-yam style clear soup sans the chili paste, with the tanginess of basil and Thai parsley giving it an exotic composure. Soup is soup, you might say, but one has to try this one to realize Chef Phantakarn’s skill in interpreting Thai tastes by fusing them with his Western culinary experiences. Then the waiter served the grilled Korubuta pork loin -- which was easily our favorite, with its right mix of delicious flair and flavors. The secret, the chef tells us later, was in the cooking of the pork. First, you marinate the pork loin, and then you sear it and finish it in the oven. The juicy, tender meat of the Korubuta is brought out even more by red wine and mustard sauce that accompanies the serving, and on the sides sautéed young carrots, broccoli, bean, and asparagus. Totally yummy! Of course, a look at the menu reveals that Chef Phantakarn has a winning selection of scrumptious international dishes – all of which appeal to the eyes, tempt with their aroma, fulfill with their taste – really, satisfy all the senses. Most importantly perhaps, the dishes come at very reasonable prices – everything we mentioned is priced at THB 350 per dish, except the soup, which is THB 290 – and servings are very generous! As we tuck into the dessert, a simple-looking Crepes Suzette served with vanilla ice cream, orange sauce, and mango, we were thinking about how The Breeze should be visited by more foodies soon. Not that the restaurant is aggressively aiming for a massive inflock of foodies, because -- as one of
its managers succinctly tells us – the restaurant is small and intimate, and their priority are the house guests who may not want to go beyond the resort for their culinary adventures because they truly want to immerse themselves into The MonttraPattaya’s “magical’ surroundings. That’s all and well. But if ever you are in Pattaya and you want to experience more the seaside resort’s diverse offering of world-class, high-quality culinary offerings, we recommend that you make a visit. Besides the great food and the signature and healthy drinks – not to mention the gracious, friendly service -- this big little restaurant of The Monttra-Pattaya boasts an arresting, relaxing view of Pattaya Bay that makes a meal here anytime more enjoyable and memorable. sophisticated mien is easily obvious in every facility, but it’s the relaxing beachfront setting of the twin-venue: The Ivy and The Ivy Lounge, which really made our day. From our pool-access room, we could already enjoy hassle-free,

Overlooking the beachfront and with a picturesque view of the pool as well, The Ivy serves à-la-carte breakfast, fresh salads, Thai curries, crispy pizzas, juicy burgers, great pastas and ice cream, and you can enjoy them while you lounge at stylish private pool cabanas or loungers. If you want some uninterrupted views of the sea, go to the upper deck to embrace the alfresco atmosphere, sunset, and the balmy sea breeze. Or, you can go up The Ivy Lounge, entering from a center door at The Ivy that could have been a secret passage to chill-out heaven, to enjoy some drinks before or after a dinner at The Exchange, the resort’s all-day dining restaurant near the lobby. The Ivy Rooftop Lounge is a chic al-fresco beach club where premium pours and fine wines can be paired with a selection of light snacks including fine cheeses and Asian inspired platters. The place is just perfect to unwind and set yourself in the mood to relax enhanced by lounge music to enjoy during the evenings. Oh, by the way, Ivy Lounge currently has a daily Happy Hour promotion in February, when its “Buy
1, Get 1 Free” from 5 to 7 p.m., for prices starting at THB 180 net. Radisson Blu’s trademark style of visual celebration of avant-garde design both in the design of the buildings and in the technological solutions and interior décor is reflected in both The Ivy and The Ivy Lounge. With such particular attention to detail, the harmony of spaces and comfort for a perfectly contemporary lifestyle, The Ivy and The Ivy Lounge of the Radisson Blu Resort Hua Hin embody the essential DNA of the brand in delivering unique hospitality experiences. And when you stay at Radisson Blu Resort Hua Hin, and experience its facilities and outlets such as The Ivy and The Ivy Lounge like we did, then you will know that indeed, that that’s not just a PR line. We had an utterly wonderful time indeed! FEBRUARY 2017 | 43
