W
ithout exaggeration, a grand exotic dream wedding can be easily yours in Thailand. There’s a variety of setting and venues to match any couple’s wish; there’s a range of professional planners and vendors to help plan, arrange, and execute their requirements; there’s the added element of Thai hospitality that makes the day even more magical -- and you don’t have to shell out a fortune to have a perfect wedding day. That is why the kingdom is regarded as one of the world’s top wedding destinations, a claim backed by several international awards and honors, and that is also why people are choosing the destination for their weddings and celebrations. With the last quarter of the year regarded as the traditional peak season for weddings in Thailand, and with more and more Indian weddings planning to book their celebrations here, we decided to make October our Wedding Issue. We reckoned this is a good month to showcase the reasons why Thailand is a wedding paradise, although our news peg was set around Indian weddings to give it focus. And anyway, they are the biggest wedding market for Thailand at the
moment. You’d be surprised at how many hotels and resorts are trying to corner the Indian wedding market today. But certainly, the information contained in our main story also applies to other nationalities that are planning to tie the knot in Thailand. The actual busy months for destination weddings in Thailand starts in November, and so this edition’s focus is quite timely too. Besides the main story, several other articles in this issue have been written with the Wedding Theme in mind. But this doesn’t mean that this edition is limited on the wedding subject. As is our usual way of doing things at Lookeast, the magazine carries a diverse range of other travel and lifestyle articles not only about Thailand but also beyond. We take a trip to the world-renowned Banaue Rice Terraces of the Philippines and made a visit to less touristic part of Vietnam, Ha Giang; there’s an essay on Phuket’s Luxury yachting scene, there are reviews of new hotel openings, and there’s an extended section (Wine & Dine), which clearly reflects the country’s growing reputation as a gourmet hub of the world. What: Bangkok’s International Festival of Dance and Music, now in its 18th edition, continues this month with an eclectic and varied line up that should keep the cultural aficionado completely engaged for six weeks. The October bill includes one of Germany’s leading classical ballet companies Karlsruhe Ballet staging ‘The Nutcracker - Christmas Carol’ set to Tchaikovsky’s music (Oct. 8-9). Last of the ballet offerings is Romeo and Juliet by Ballet Preljocaj (Oct 12). Flamenco also gets the attention of the festival and this year it presents Spain’s most famous flamenco dancer Sara Baras and her company (Oct 16). The Sara Baras Dance Company will enthral the audiences with its newest production: Voces, suite flamenca’ - a tribute to flamenco. With two separate programs on Oct 18 and 19, these accomplished dancers are all set to stun Bangkok. Straddling the space between dance and the acrobatic is the China National Acrobatic Troupe (Beijing) scheduled for two more performances on Oct 1 and 2. The company will stage an elegant, acrobatic gala choreographed in celebration of the troupe’s 55th anniversary. The musical element of the festival is just as strong, and the Presidential Symphony Orchestra from Turkey will perform on Oct. 14 with conductor Rengim Gokmen setting the pace. Lovers of jazz should mark their calendars for Oct. 3 for a double bill of the Shuffle Demons Jazz from Canada and the Belgian Saxophone Ensemble. What: The second movie in the new Contemporary World Film Series is “White God,” a film by LKornel Munduczo of Hungary. ‘White God’, set in the beautiful Hungarian capital-city of Budapest, is a strong and inspiring tale of the love between a 13-year -old girl, Lili, and her half-breed ‘mongrel’ dog, Hagen. Lili brings him when she comes to live with her estranged father. She loves him so much that she even takes him to her music classes, much to the chagrin of the teacher and the other students. But her father refuses to keep him at home, and abandons him on the streets. Lili is heartbroken, but cannot find him. Being a mongrel, no one wants him, but soon Hagen is sold to a dog-fighter, who teaches him how to fight and kill. After that, Hagen becomes a killer dog, and soon gangs up with 250 dogs in the city, to wreak revenge on the humans who treated them badly.The film is as symbolic as its emotional, and has moved audiences around the world. VEGETARIAN FESTIVAL
What: Thailand celebrates a Vegetarian Festival every year. It usually takes place for nine days although some locals extend the observance for 10 days, depending on the temples and organizing committee involved. The most famous celebration is held in Phuket, where the festival takes a most extreme form, with bizarre feats held throughout by devout believers. THOD KATHIN
What: Thod Kathin or Kathina, which is held on the first day after the full moon of the eleventh Thai lunar month, is celebrated in parts of Northeastern Thailand and Laos. The presentation of Monks’ robes after the rains retreat is the central Buddhist activity. Kathin is a lunar month-long event when local people return to their families and go to the temple events as well as local gatherings. It may not quite stack up to Pamplona’s annual running of the bulls but Thailand’s version, the “Chonburi Buffalo Races” every October, is just as full of thrills!

t might not quite stack up to Pamplona’s annual running of the bulls, but sleepy Chonburi stages its own version every October, the “Chonburi Buffalo Races,” which pays homage to Thailand’s agriculture beasts of burden. Visitors don’t need to worry neither about getting gored here, nor the buffalo being injured, as this is no Papa Hemingway spectacle, but rather a fun family event featuring the buffaloes as the star attraction. The festival’s origins go back over one hundred years, and are actually tied in to the Buddhist Lent celebration of “Awk Pansaa”-- the end of the rains retreat period-- when the monks finally come out of their self imposed sequestering in the monas-teries during the rainy season. During this time, people give thanks for an abundant wet period, hopefully one that irrigated fertile crops, and of course, the buffalo was a pretty integral part of that, so the locals decided their beasts needed some feting as well. Farmers bring in throngs of beasts from out of town, with the main event of the day being the 100m-buffalo dash, er, gallop cum plod, when the animals compete for some hefty prize money. The buffaloes actually can get a real burst of speed up once they take off and are headed in a straight direction, and there really are some exciting and epic finishes between several riders. The hardest part of the race seems to be getting

the jockey aboard the beast without being thrown, and then getting the pair out of the starting blocks facing straight ahead. In addition to the dozens of races that take place, there are also some pretty out-landish events such as the Miss Farmer Beauty Contest, also a buffalo beauty pag-eant, and a buffalo costume competition, and even a few “men versus buffalo” strength competition, of which you can guess who always wins. There is also a pole climbing competition, with dozens of young men trying to ascend a welloiled pole that has THB 500 notes placed on top, trying to spur them on. The buffalo has been the subject of many a report in the past few years, as to how they are slowly becoming extinct in Thai society as motorized tractors and other technologies have replaced them in the fields, and their bodies used as meat in an expanding carnivore trade. Hopefully festivals like this can keep the spotlight on the animals and how valuable their contribution has been to Thai society,
while giving folks a chance to go out and have a fun day at the races as well. This year’s “Chonburi Buffalo Races” will take place during Oct. 14-16. While the races do often fall right on the designated “Awk Pansaa” holiday date (Oct. 16 this year), they are officially governed by the lunar calendar and auspicious dates, so it is best to call the Chonburi Municipal Office (038 283 449) or Chonburi TAT (038 427 667) for official information a week or so in advance. While the parades and con-tests take place over a period of several days, the buffalo racing is only on one day. To get to the event on public transport, take a Chonburi bound bus from the Ek-kamai Eastern Bus Station, get off in central Chonburi, and hop a motorcycle taxi the last 5 minutes to the Provincial Office and stadium. Just say, “wing kwaii” (buffalo running) and everyone will point you in the right direction.

Take a bus from the Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) where buses to provinces in the eastern of Thailand depart regularly from 5:30a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The last stop is Forum Plaza Chonburi. MUAY THAI LIVE Thai kickboxing throws a stage knockout punch

W
hile muay thai, the Thai kickboxing martial art, is an integral part of Thai culture, many visitors to the kingdom don’t have a strong understanding as to its history, nuances, or much else about the sport, often just seeing it as mindless violence. While it can be bloody, and pretty maleoriented, “Muay Thai Live,” a new stage performance put together by an acclaimed Thai film director, elevates the ancient art to new heights, putting a well choreographed spin on Thai kickboxing that is both entertaining and informative, as well as being very family friendly. “Muay Thai Live,” which is performed nightly in an intimate theatre at the Asiatique Night Bazaar, brings the history and

tradition behind the art of muay thai to a beautifully choreographed live performance. Directed by award winning Thai film director Ekachai Uekrongtham, who directed “Beautiful Boxer,” and featuring professional boxer and actor Uttaporn Suwan, the performance takes place over five short acts, which follow the rise of Thai boxing from its conception to the present. The show starts out in the Ayutthaya kingdom, where Thai warriors use boxing skills to subdue invaders and some of the earliest muay thai legends were born. It was during this time that Nai Khanom Tom, a fighter of incredible skill, became a legend and gave the sport the name “the art of eight limbs,” due to its swift moves utilizing the entire body. The cast of “Muay Thai Live” is made up of a stellar team of young men (and a few women) who excel in boxing, swordplay, gymnastics, and stunt acting, and they all bring great exuberance and plenty of talent in exhibiting their tremendous skills, stunts, and amazing maneuvers. The performance moves through the ages, showing the heritage and origins of Thai boxing, as well as showcasing all of its moves, sometimes slowed down so the
audience can understand where each move comes from, and how it lives up to its name. The stage show progresses to the modern day, where a young couple argue over the male’s spending too much time with muay thai, and yet he shows his beau how useful it can be when they are attacked by a gang of thugs. The venue at Asiatique’s Stage theatre, housed in a warehouse at the back of the night bazaar, is quite intimate, with all seats giving fabulous views of the stage, and the lighting and sound systems are state of the art, with the performers bathed in mood enhancing colors, and an accompanying soundtrack, as well as text displayed up on a large screen, spelling out the various acts and storyline as it unfolds for the audience. Topping it all off, there are two short live boxing performances after the show, allowing the audience to have a bit more perspective and understanding when it comes to the actual boxing. There are plenty of photo ops here, and judging by the number of children and families in attendance, this is one very family friendly spectacle, so mom doesn’t have to go off shopping while dad sits and takes in the fights.

here’s nothing in the world like an Indian wedding – that’s indisputable. Indians are known to spend more effort and put more money to ensure a wedding that will be remembered forever. They are grand, lavish, pompous, colorful, fun, and entertaining. And nothing compares to it even more when the wedding is held in a destination like Thailand, which adds not only more romance – being a destination wedding – but also pride and prestige to the couple tying the knot. Why are so many Indian weddings drawn to Thailand these days? Mickey Jain, who organizes Indian weddings in Thailand for a company called Beautiful Weddings, says, “Thailand is and will continue to be a preferred destination for Indian weddings because of its proximity to India, its unparalleled hospitality, and the value for money it offers.” That could be an understatement, but the fact is more

and more weddings are being held in Thailand these days. Jain’s company alone organizes 20 to 25 events a year on average, and he’s already booked to organize between 10 and 17 weddings in Thailand from November this year to February 2017. Thailand, of course has always been vocal about cornering the Indian wedding market. After all, the Indian wedding industry is now worth more than US$25 billion a year and since 2013 has been growing at 20 percent a year. Reports from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) indicate that the average spending for an Indian wedding in Thailand is THB10 million (about US$340,000), with an average of 200 to 500 guests attending. The average duration of each wedding is three to five nights, with approximately 600 rooms booked. But again what makes Thailand the ideal place to tie the knot for Indian couples? The simple answer is that the kingdom has a lot to offer, beginning with its celebrated geographic diversity – from the mountains to the beaches and everything in between. Thailand, according to the book “Weddings and Celebrations in Thailand,” offers locations few other countries can in one convenient package. Its sophisticated tourism product and state-of the-art infrastructure ensures that no matter which corner of the country you choose for your wedding celebration, you can expect, and get, the best.
Of particular attraction to parents, from some countries in particular, might also be the fact that, in Thailand, it is often possible to do something really grand for rather less than something really less grand, elsewhere.

“It still costs two to three times more to host a wedding in India than in Thailand,” says Satish Sehgal of the Thai-Indian Business Association once said. “Indian wedding expenses include airfares, hotel accommodation, food, transportation, hired yachts, and the actual wedding ceremony expenses for around 200 guests from overseas, plus priests and Indian chefs from India.” Average budget for a middle class Indian wedding ceremony has been estimated to be US$34,000, while it is estimated that the uppermiddle and rich classes spend upward of US$1 million. This doesn’t include cash and valuables given as part of a dowry. While the value of the Thai baht is similar to the Indian rupee, prices of hotels in Thailand are 30-60 percent cheaper overall when comparing similar categories, according to Indian wedding experts, and the quality of hotels is among the best in the world. Hotels and resorts all over the country offer a variety of adaptable wedding packages, to suit all faiths, traditions, tastes and budget.
That is why an increasing number of couples from India and other countries are choosing to get married at a hotel or resort in Thailand. Flights to Bangkok are only slightly more expensive than domestic flights in India and in some cases, just the same price. For example, Thailand is only a four-hour flight from Delhi and Mumbai. With more affordable travel, couples can invite more members of the family and friends to their to wedding and make the occasion an opportunity to enjoy not only the wedding but also a holiday in the sun. Food and beverage are also 30-60 percent cheaper in general, and, "this means you get a ‘bigger bang’ for your bucks in Thailand," to quote one Indian wedding writer.

Every hotel, and especially the destination resorts, leave no stone unturned –to use a cliché – to ensure weddings held at their venue are unforgettable. In fact, ceremonies can be custom-designed around your religion and desires, and catered to small and large groups. Usually, couples intending to marry bring their respective parents and friends as witnesses. Many Indian wedding groups have been coming to Thailand and these weddings are some of the most sought-after by the big resorts and hotels because of their large groups and high-spending power. Also, they are not a one-day affair. They can be very extravagant too. An Indian wedding can last up to several days or weeks. It features a number of functions and locations with the “Mehndi (ring ceremony),” “Sangeet (pre-wedding event, usually a day before),” actual wedding (formal ceremonies, etc.), and reception (post wedding celebration). These are held on separate days, although sometimes people will combine wedding and reception on same day. Attendees to Indian weddings in Thailand range between 50 and 1,000 people. Thailand at the moment, followed by Japanese, Koreans, and Europeans. While most big fat Indian weddings choose five-star Bangkok hotels such as Anantara Siam, Royal Orchid Sheraton, Millennium Hilton, Centara Grand Bangkok and Centara Grand Ladprao, or the Grand Hyatt Erawan, others opt for hotels in Chiang Mai, where you can have a similarly lavish wedding at the Dhara Dhevi Chiang Mai, Shangri-la Chiang Mai, and Le Meriden Chiang Mai. The northern hub of Chiang Mai, by the way, is also a favorite wedding destination of those who prefer the Lanna style ceremonies, mountains and elephants for their wedding. For many people, getting married so close to the ocean is a dream come true. Thus many Indian weddings have been held in Hua Hin, Pattaya,
Samui, Phuket, Krabi and other beach destinations. In Hua Hin, popular Indian wedding options include the Dusit Thani Hua Hin, Putahracsa Hua Hin, and Radisson Hua Hin. In Phuket, the Centara Grand Phuket, The Racha Phuket, and Dewa Phuket, are among the most popular exotic wedding retreats for Indian couples these days; and in Krabi, the Holiday Inn Krabi is emerging to be a preferred choice for many Indian wedding planners. Most hotels and resorts have their own departments to deal with weddings from beginning to end. In Bangkok alone, many hotels boast great wedding venues for couples to choose from, although they mostly prefer chains and brand names with at least 150 rooms in the 4- or 5-star category. segment? Enough for hotels like the Plaza Athenee Bangkok to include a Wedding Gallery in its facilities’ expansion besides the now common wedding fairs and wedding showrooms. Even Novotel Bangkok on Siam Square, which holds more local- than foreign-booked wedding functions, has a dedicated team devoted to this (Twenty-five percent of the hotel's function revenues come from wedding functions, the hotel's director of catering and banqueting told us one time). Also most hotels and resorts around the kingdom offer huge exclusive discounts on room bookings to wedding groups. In Phuket, these include JW Marriott, Dusit Laguna, Banyan Tree, and Le

Meridien (Khao Lak). In Hua Hin, you can also check out Sheraton Hua Hin and Hilton Hua Hin. You can also find budget wedding ceremonies that are not the least memorable. But it is always advisable to look up wedding organizers or travel service providers that are truly dependable.

These days there is a trend for clients to celebrate anniversaries and birthdays too. Q: How many years have you been doing Indian weddings in Thailand, and why did you select Thailand? A: I have been working in Thailand for 12 years now. For the first wedding, we chose Thailand almost by chance, my client was from Japan and they had extended family in Thailand. My first experience at Rama Garden was great and that’s when I thought to develop Thailand as a destination for Indian weddings. A: I started my destination wedding planning career from Thailand, and it is like my home. I wanted to celebrate the special occasion of my son’s wedding also at my “home.” Approximately 400 guests flew in from all over the world.
The bomb blast occurred only two days before the wedding day. All guests had already arrived and we had around 200 vendors working that day. By the grace of God and Erawan shrine no one was hurt. The management team at Hyatt Erawan was very supportive and we are thankful to them. The Thai police was also very helpful. Q: What weddings have you got lined up for the future? A: About 10-12 weddings in the upcoming season from November to February 2017 Q: What support do you get from TAT, the Thai government? A: The TAT and the Thai government have always been helpful to us. Q: Any suggestions on how Thailand can improve? A: Certain immigration changes like easy customs, group visa issues, and temporary work permits for vendors.
Thailand to host Destination Wedding Planners’ Congress in May 2017
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is projecting a significant growth in international weddings and honeymoons being celebrated in Thailand after hosting its first “Destination Wedding Planners Congress (DWPC)” at the Laguna Golf Phuket between May 2 and 4, 2017. “Thailand will leave no stone unturned in ensuring the best of preparations for this Congress to become a global wedding hub for couples of every nationality,” says Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, minister of tourism and sports. “We definitely have to work as a team. If we want to be the World’s Best Wedding Destination, we really need to enhance our expertise and better understand all our source markets.” The global weddings industry is estimated to have a total value of US$298 billion, of which the value of foreign country weddings is US$80 billion. hen Gulu Lalvani, chairman of Royal Phuket Marina (RPM) in Phuket received the Luxury Yachting in Thailand award for RPM last February, he said, “I believe that Phuket and Thailand have many of the best marinas in the region and is very well positioned to indeed become the regional marina hub.” He couldn’t have been more right. Indeed Thailand and Phuket especially – thanks to its beautiful sailing grounds and marine facilities -- ranks high in the status of the leading marine lifestyle and tourism in the region. With five big international regattas – including the annual Phuket King’s Cup Regatta in December and Phuket Raceweek in July that draw thousands of sailors and tourists from around the world, the island is veritable regatta hub; a top favorite of many sailors from many parts of the world. But it’s not only the high profile regattas that give Phuket’s marine tourism a boost. Silently but surely, luxury yachting is redefining not only Phuket’s tourism landscape but also the unique lifestyles and experiences that the island offers. Today, luxury yachting and its benefits can be enjoyed by more people than ever – from those who dream of owning a yacht to tourists who just want to enjoy the appurtenant pleasure of sailing into the sunset over the Andaman Sea either by programmed tours or private charters. Hype offers three options: Morning, Day, and Night – at varying prices (per person or per charter and depending on the season). For example, if you want to book a private charter during the high season (Nov. 15-April 15) price starts at THB 65,000 for a group of less than 30. From December to January (peak season), a charter can cost you some THB 360,000 or up per charter. But their website also shows that you can book a Hype Experience for just THB 2,900 per person or VIP Hype Experience for THB 3,900 per person. Other luxury yacht operations probably charge the same range more or less. Hype Luxury Boat Club departs from Yacht Haven Phuket Marina during low season and Patong during the high season. There are several marinas now open for these kind of experiences in Phuket, and travelers can find information of the trips and tours available, including price and all, at their hotel’s tour counter. You can also contact your preferred Yacht Charter Broker to help you plan a perfect yachting vacation itinerary, combining your party's needs with recommendations about the best time to visit each area. And the superyachts are coming to town. One of the biggest news recently was that from Kata Rocks, which was reported to be launching its very own ‘Superyacht Rendezvous’ in December. Sponsored by Infinite Luxury, the development and management brand behind Kata Rocks, the 'Kata Rocks Superyacht Rendezvous’ (KRSR) will welcome

sailing and motor yachts over 24 meters in length along with selected industry partners. Indeed, since the Thai government abolished the luxury tax system for boats in 2004, “buying a boat in Thailand has become an attractive proposition especially for owners wanting to spend extended periods in the kingdom’s cerulean waters,” to quote Princess Yachts SEA, Phuket (Princess Yachts SEA runs an advice column in Phuket News on buying, owning, maintaining, and making the most of a private yacht in Thailand). Thus the huge success of boat and yacht shows (such as the “Thailand Yacht Show”) not only in Phuket but also in other major tourist destinations like Pattaya. “Owning a boat is the ultimate way to explore the stunning marine landscapes for which Thailand is globally famous, and since the abolition of the luxury tax, a standard 7 percent VAT is the only financial burden above the price of the vessel. In fact, continues Princess Yacht SEA, those who choose to register their boat under a foreign flag can avoid paying any purchase taxes at all.” State support has augured well for the marine industry indeed and since Phuket was announced as one of Asia’s major yachting and marina
destinations, the government has done more than just revoke the import tax. It has also done much to encourage investors and builders of marinas and related infrastructure and properties to come. Thus, Thailand now has companies like MGC (Asia) Thailand's sole distributor of yachts from Azimut-Benetti Group, one of Italy's leading yacht producers. The company expects to sell three to four middle-sized yachts a year in Thailand. MGC (Asia) does not only sell yachts to Thai high-end customers but also offers full after-sale service package, in which yacht owners pay 10 percent of the yacht price per year, according to a Bangkok Post report. While it is difficult to get the exact figures yet for the growing luxury yachting sector, there is obviously a market and demand for it. With continuing government support for it, luxury yachting should become much more popular among upscale Thais in the near future – and by extension, to incoming highend travelers too!

Driving your way around the provinces of Isan is another exciting way of discovering the region and its people by Percy Roxas

san – the northeast of Thailand. Perhaps no other region of the country offers such diversity, such wealth of culture, such traditions and such range of both natural and manmade attractions than Isan, which even those who have been living in Thailand for a long time have been taking for granted. But what we have seen in this region have enamored it to us so. My love affair with Isan started years back, when I first joined a fam trip to explore some provinces along the Mekong River. It was an eye-opener, to say the least. Seeing the harsh realities of daily Isan life – the region is among the poorest in Thailand – on one side, and enjoying the countryside’s diverse attractions

and beauty on the other, one is left wondering why this region is being left out by other mainstream tourist destinations. We have always wanted to explore more of this region. A full road trip is not always possible, since we are a mere salary man hounded by the limitations of the daily office grind, so we try to visit the region province by province. For example, one time we would just go to Buriram, famed for the remaining relics of the Khmer Empire that rule this part of the country for decades, or just visit Ubon Ratchathani, that beautiful border province that is a melting pot of culture and home to the park where the first rays of sunrise in Thailand are witnessed. But we recently had a chance

to take a road trip that took us from the Isan gateway that is Korat to the northernmost Isan outreach of Loei, rounding the trip off by short stop overs in neighboring provinces to complete our journey – and then back. There was no plan, no program, and we decided to just go where the four wheels would take us.
KORAT
Korat is the perfect springboard for an Isan roadtrip. Not only is it the closest to Bangkok, but also, the province is connected to almost all the Isan provinces – and up to the Lao border in fact -- by big, wide, well-maintained highways. Driving from here to elsewhere in the region is therefore always a pleasure. Korat (or Nakhonratchasima) is also one of the four major cities of Isan. It is the capital of the Nakhon Ratchasima Province, said to be the biggest in terms of land area in the region. Located at the western edge of the Khorat Plateau, it once marked the boundary between Lao and Siamese territory. Because we always visit Korat – often as a side trip from
Khao Yai – we just skirted its streets and skimmed over its attractions; we know we can come back here so easily anyway. From the capital city, we headed straight to Loei, which is about 279km or 173miles from Korat. There are actually two routes to get there, one passing Chaiyaphum, and the other through Khon Kaen. We chose the one passing by Chiayaphum, and it was a smooth six hours or so drive.

Why Loei? Loei has always been off the tourist radar and one of the few remaining Thai provinces that we've been to. But in fact, one of our main goals in doing this trip is visiting Chiang Khan, a riverside community that is gaining a reputation among intrepid travelers, both here and abroad. On the way to Chiang Khan, we stopped by Phu Pa Po, where there are some lovely walking trails and viewpoints to take in the views of Phu Ho, a 900m-mountain that resembles Japan’s Mount Fuji. People have been coming here to look at the mountain
ever since and also across Loei’s lush landscape. Tractors take you through meadows of wildflowers and every ridge seems to boast a beautiful view. From the “Japanese” side of Loei, we when moved to the “Chinese” side: the ancient limestone formation of Suan Hin Phan Ngam, which is just farther down the road. Suan Hin Pha Ngam is often called “Loei’s Kunming,” and there are nature trails and caves hidden in a landscape that was formed over millions of years. The prehistoric hills offer challenging hikes and adventure and it’s worth taking an afternoon to explore. After seeing these two highlights, everything else seems to pale in comparison. But in fact, down every winding road on the way to Chiang Khan there’s a view to enjoy: timeless scenes such as farmers planting the paddies, children swimming in the rivers, ordinary Thais getting about their daily chores in their usual ways, and more. We skipped Dansai, home to the popular “Phi Ta Khon Festival,” but we stopped for a bit at Tai Dam Village, which is home to ethnic groups, each with their own traditions. There are many interesting stories to tell from here, but they are probably fit for a separate article later. Before dusk had fully set in, we reached Chiang Khan, regarded as Northeastern Thailand’s best-kept secret. That is, until now. The secret is now out and this charming town on the side of the Mekong -- once an important crossing link into colonial Lao PDR – is now welcoming an influx of tourists, although the locals seem still quite wary of them.

Chiang Khan’s charm is more apparent in the evening when its main roads become abuzz with activities. The main road, Chai Khong, doubles as a Walking Street, where you can enjoy not only bargain shopping but also eating, drinking, and mixing along with the locals. We stayed in one of the teak hotels overlooking the river and, while enjoying a sundowner in an open space facing the river, we thought about how many of the Thai destinations started pretty much the same way like this. The next day, we woke up early to visit the Lao-style temples, including Wat Si Khun Mueang, which was built during the reign of Rama III and boasts some lovely murals. This is just one of the many temples we visited, as Thais are prone to do when they travel around the country. There are still many attractions that we want to see, but we’re just on the first leg of the road trip and there’s so much more to see and visit.

From Chiang Khan, we took the main road by the Mekong on the way to Nong Khai, the northernmost of the northeastern provinces. To give you an idea where it is, we must mention the provinces neighboring Nong Khai (from east clockwise): Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon, Udon Thani, and Loei. We stopped by almost every temple, we visited the marketplaces, we alighted our vehicle every now and then to get a glimpse of what’s abuzz in the river itself, we ate at any street corner to meet local people, and we scouted for some trinkets to serve as our memento of the trip. While driving so many kilometers down, my friend was telling me about how the Mekong is the lifeblood of the region, how the Lao and Thai people used to live side by side in war and in peace, how the provinces here have come to where they are today. I guess the best travel experience of all is just letting your self be ruled by serendipity. Without a programmed bucket list, you are free to be even where you thought you wouldn't be – and in turn really learn not just something new but a lot indeed. We reached Nong Khai in the early evening (again), welcomed by a drizzle that gave the streets a kind of theatrical, dramatic feel. We stayed at a hotel in a street that is obviously touristic; lined up with bars, restaurants, Internet cafes, and other fun places. But we aren’t so keen to experience the nightlife at the
moment, as we are so tired from the trip, so we went straight to sleep. This wasn’t our first time in Nong Khai, but since my friends and I have not been here for a while we decided to follow a more mainstream course. So, after breakfast, we went to Wat Pho Chai, where the Luangpho Phra Sai, a sacred Buddha image of the town that is respected by the people of Nong Khai, is housed. It is also the place where the annual rocket merit-making festival, a festival unique to Isan, is held. Nong Khai is also home to “Bang Fai Phaya Nak (Naga Fireball Festival),” a phenomenon that occurs at the end of Buddhist Lent, which is this month. “Bang Fai Phaya Nak” is a term used for red and pinkish fireballs, which according to belief, belong to Phaya Nak or the great serpent of the underwater world. On the day marking the end of the Buddhist Lent, you’’ll see a stream of people coming to witness the phenomenon. But Nong Khai is perhaps more famous among visa runners, as the border town is connected to Laos by the Thai-Lao Friendhsip Bridge that was opened in 1994. Vientiane, the Laotian capital, is on 25km away from the provincial capital of Nong Khai. Our next stop was the Tha Sadet Market, which is a source of products from Indochina and Eastern Europe, including dried food, processed food, electric appliances, clothes, watches, and kitchenware. A walk in market at noontime wasn’t really fun at all, but our mood changed when we went to this Vietnamese restaurant by the river that served some of the finest food in Nong Khai ever! From Nong Khai, we could have gone farther south to Mukdahan and Ubon Ratchathani, but we reckoned we needed more days if we are to continue toward that trail. We drove to Udon Thani instead. As you can probably tell there is still so much of Isan to explore; we have barely scratched the surface of its awesome attractions. But that’s OK, because then we have still a lot of reason to come back, again, and again!

RIDING HIGH IN HA GIANG A less known loop in Northern Vietnam that skirts the Chinese border gives adventurous riders the thrill of a lifetime by Marco Ferrarese

T
he stark opposites of this scenery have a touch of supernatural: to the left, rocky crests that look like petrified waves emerge from a deep gorge while rolling green mountains constellated by paddies extend to the right. We are in the middle; awestruck on the strip of asphalt we are riding. Squinting at the horizon hard enough, one can see the profile of the southern border of China's Guanxi province behind a wall of clouds, a mystic landscape of conical limestone crags, rigid valleys, and mountain peoples who have rarely left these barren highlands. To taste a glimpse of this idyllic scenery, we have brought our wheels to Ha Giang, Vietnam's northernmost province that rubs shoulders with south China. Just about eight hours ride from Hanoi, Ha Giang is the ultimate adventure playground, a place that, to the contrary of its celebrated neighbors Sapa and Lao Cai, sees very few travelers. As I observe the tips of saw-toothed mountains scratch the clouds overhead, I can't say I'm not glad that Ha Giang still stays well under the mainstream radar. The unlikely reason seems to be the special permit needed to visit -- it can in fact be easily obtained in most of the region's hotels and guesthouses for only 300,000 dong (about US$15). The best way to travel and enjoy the views of this slice of North Vietnam is by renting a motorbike and venturing out of Ha Giang's center toward the villages of Meo Vac and Dong Van to the northwest. It's here that the well-paved road loops back, completing OCTOBER 2016 | 35
TRAVEL OUTBOUND in the following 22km to Meo Vac that climb over the Ma Pi Leng Pass that the Ha Giang loop really gives its best. The midway highlight is a viewpoint towering over a river valley down below. Take your time to marvel on the beauty of it all, because once you have reached Meo Vac -- a small town of new, tall buildings flanking the sides of a long, anonymous road -- the magic's finished. The next day, a last 150kmstretch back to Ha Giang completes the loop through a lower valley, connecting at Yen Minh. Compared to the scenery between Dong Van and Meo Vac, the ride is far from spectacular. But again, with the joy of cruising past viridian countryside that hardly sees any travelers, one shouldn't worry too much if nature has not kept her very best for last.
a 320-km circle back to Ha Giang. Those who are not confident with Vietnamese roads may decide to travel on the cramped local buses. But be forewarned: the real joy of the Ha Giang loop is to ride it against the wind, loving every minute of its stunning views by negotiating one hairpin bend after the other. As such, renting a set of wheels in Ha Giang is highly recommended. It's only a few minutes beyond Ha Giang's city limits that the road starts climbing into the forested hills flanked by blue rivers that slowly lead to the Dong Van Geo-Park. This area was inscribed by UNESCO in 2011, the second in Southeast Asia. After a couple hours drive, the ascent breaks marvelously at Heaven's Gate Pass, right after a series of bare rock formations nicknamed "Moon Rocks." The road then starts descending to the village of Tam Son, built in-between and around a series of mound-shaped hills. Two of them rise very next to each other, and have been cheekily nicknamed "fairy bosoms" by the locals. Tam Son makes for a good lunch stop before continuing into the Yen Minh district, along the course

of the Mien River. As the road rises again from the valley, the horizon breaks into a forest of limestone peaks that extend in the distance all the way to China. Keep the next 70km to Dong Van, via Meo Vac, for the next day: easily some of Southeast Asia's most stunning mountain landscapes, they are better savored slowly. Cut by a surreal collection of switchbacks and viewpoints along an almost fantasylike backdrop of limestone peaks, the mountains here seem to have been petrified as they were chasing each other. At times, the scenery reminds of a Chinese painting, with all the stereotypical mist, cone-shaped rock pinnacles, and bemused villagers. This mostly treeless land is under the reign of the H'mong, and it's about midway on this stretch of loop that a short diversion leads to the charming wooden palace of their king. Built with the provents from the opium trade, this small but opulent castle has three stone courtyards and a number of rooms that should be explored before driving the last 15km to Dong Van. One can linger and soak the village’s relaxed atmosphere, but it's

ove knows no bounds, especially when it comes to less than conventional marriages. It just goes to show the power of attraction, and the fact that some folks will do anything in the name of love. Here are some bizarre marriages in Thailand that have grabbed the spotlight in recent years.
Fate or Fraud -
True love spans lifetimes and takes many forms. In this case, a few years ago there was this news about Sathien Khenakutrang, from Udon Thani, who fell for a curvy bride, a 3.5m-long python. Weighing 20kg, the snake, affectionately called Sittida, was wrapped around the Sathien’s neck and seemed to be nuzzling him during the marriage ceremony. At one point, the bridegroom even bent down and kissed the serpent, much to the horror and amusement of the wedding guests. The story behind this chilling union is that Sathien believed that he and Sittida were lovers in a past life. Sathien, a bodyguard, fell for the daughter, Sittida, of a deity he was to protect. Phrayanakho, the deity, vehemently disapproved of the couple’s relationship and had the bodyguard executed. He also banished his daughter from the palace. After learning of her beloved’s demise, Sittida subsequently died of a broken heart. Their two sorrowful souls lingered in this mortal coil, searching for one another for over 600 years. The joyous couple was finally reunited in the present lifetime despite the skepticism and scorn they endured (and the fact that one of them was reincarnated as a reptile). The couple’s marital bliss was short-lived, however, as Sathien’s bride suddenly disappeared one night, never to be seen again. Sittida, however, apparently left her jilted lover something to remember her by: an egg that supposedly contained the offspring of the snake-human couple.
Twice the Fun -
A 24-year-old Thai guy from Samut Songkram married 22-year-old twin sisters, promising to love and cherish both of them equally. The man, Wichai, said that the three of them had been best friends since they were children, and that he developed an infatuation for not one, but both women. The trio dated for several years, and Wichai decided to ask the twins for their hands in marriage, despite the unusual nature of the relationship. He paid two dowries to the brides’ family, and upon being interviewed by local newspapers after the ceremony, Wichai declared wholeheartedly that he did not anticipate problems and issues with having two wives. Wichai arranged for his brides to live with him in his family house after the wedding, and his mother has prepared two bedrooms for the newlyweds. The sisters themselves supported the union, saying they had previously made a promise to stay together, and that “our future husband would have to either take us both, or leave us.” Finding true love and lasting happiness is exceptionally rare. So we cannot really judge nor question the motives of others in entering into seemingly nutty nuptials. Hopefully, most of these couples (with the exception of the man and snake) beat the odds, outlasting the bulk of fleeting conventional marriages.
Creepy but Cute - One Valentine's
Day, seven couples took part in a traditional Thai wedding ceremony, replete with chanting monks and the pouring of lustral water on the hands of the newlyweds. The patron of the ceremony was Ripley's Believe It Or Not in Pattaya, and not surprisingly, there was a twist: the couples were decked out as corpses. Weirdness aside, the couples said that they hoped the gruesome get-up would exorcise jinxes and help them live together in harmony. The star couple of these unusually creepy nuptials included “Centipede King” Boonthawee Seangwong and “Scorpion Queen” Kanjana Kaetkeow. The latter entered the Guinness Book of World Records in 2002 for spending 32 days in a glass cube with 3,400 scorpions, while her groom holds the 2003 Guinness record for spending 28 days locked up with 1,000 centipedes. “We've done plenty of strange things before so a weird wedding sounded fun, and besides Ripley's is paying for it,” Kanjana commented. Ripley's also vowed to make their Valentine's Day wedding an annual affair. “This year, we have had such lovely couples, I expect more lovely couples and more variety next year,” said the organizer deadpanned.
Match made in Heaven – From Surin, there
was this story about Chadil Deffy, who literally took his love to the grave, marrying his deceased girlfriend in a wedding ceremony that also doubled as a funeral for the young bride. Deffy and his longtime girlfriend Anne had planned to get hitched in the future but Anne unexpectedly died in a car accident before the couple could set a date. Much to the surprise of his friends, Deffy posted a message on his FB page inviting them to a wedding-cum-funeral rite at a local temple. He later published photos and video footage of himself placing a ring on Anne’s finger during the nuptials, setting social media circles abuzz. Some questioned the bizarre act, while others expressed sympathy for the groom and admired his moving gesture of everlasting love.

You can also try their Asiatique Sky (Ferris wheel) Must-see: The Calypso Cabaret shows or if you prefer more action, try to buy a ticket for the live Muay Thai show. Must-buy: Thai local products, fashion accessories, clothes, shoes, and bags. They also have lots of Thai snacks to bring to your friends back home. Eat at: With more than 40 restaurants here, there is almost everything, but I love the Kodang Talay Restaurant, because they serve Thai seafood at its best. Drink at: The Fire and Dine Bar and Why97 Pub and Restaurant are highly recommended but Happy Fish is my favorite because they have variety of beverages. The live band and live DJ every night enhances the fun too! Sleep at: The Sunreno Serviced Apartment is just across Asiatique. Tongtara Hotel is also walking distance but you have more options for boutique hotels at Silom Road, which is not far from the place.
My Favorite Place: I love many places in Thailand but Khao Yai is the place to be. Bring there: Hat, walking shoes, and your camera. Don't forget to bring your long and wide-angle lenses. Must do: Visiting one of the wineries is very interesting, There's also a wine tasting at the end of the tour. Don't Do: After spending weekend in Khao Yai, it's better to leave the area after mid-day, as late afternoon is always traffic when arriving in Bangkok. Must See: I am a serious amateur photographer and one of the places that I love to visit when getting subjects is at the National Park. Apart from enjoying the landscape and the views you will also have a great time taking photos of the nature and the wildlife. To end your visit, try visiting also the Tuscan village, there you will discover something unique. They have cute shops selling different kinds of Thai products, foods, restaurants, and get entertained with their different themes. Must buy: Grape juice, jams, and wines produced in Khao Yai Eat at: all the local restaurants to enjoy Thai food Sleep at: Kiri Maya Resort - a romantic gateway for couples and family. BANAUE CALLING The Banaue Rice Terraces, often called “The 8th Wonder of the World,” remains a wonderful slice of rural Philippine life; a spot that is well worth making the effort to get to, if only to experience an age-old way of life by Dave Stamboulis

wo old women with hand knitted red sweaters and turban-like head coverings spit out the juice of betel nut, as red as their pullovers, and quite the vivid contrast with the lush green surrounding me. These women, members of the Ifugao tribe, are taking it easy, chewing betel nut and dipping in to a stash of bayah rice beer they have hidden at their feet, probably a well needed respite from the taxing labor they have done most of their lives, continuing in their ancestors traditions of building some of the world’s most exquisite mountain rice terraces. Banaue, reached only via a taxing bus journey through the rugged Cordillera Mountains of the northern Philippines, has been called the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” The lush cascading rice terraces that cross the mountainsides here were built by the Ifugao ancestors over two thousand years ago, all by hand, made up of stonewalls and mud, and designed with elaborate irrigation systems as well coming from the rainforests in the mountains above. While erosion and drought have impacted the terraces a bit over the years--not to mention that the younger Ifugao generation no longer want to work the terraces, preferring easier and more lucrative careers in tourism--the terraces are still fully functioning, both as a major source of pride and revenue for the locals, as well as combining age-old tradition with modern progress. In 2001, the terraces were put on the World Heritage In Danger list, but with sustainable tourism making a rise, along with conservation programs installed by the local OCTOBER 2016 | 41

government, as well as a four-fold rise in the price of rice, the terraces were removed from the list after a decade. Additionally, as of 2009, the terraces were declared free from any genetically modified organisms, a project carried out with both local support and that of Greenpeace. Banaue town itself lacks charms because it has become rather sprawling, overbuilt, and is mainly full of pestering vendors trying to hawk small carved wooden statues known as bulol, which are actually rice guardians that are an important part of the Ifugao spiritual belief system. However, it is easy enough to escape the town and head further afield, to small villages surrounded by walls of rice. I make my way to the outskirts of Batad, to a tiny hamlet with a cluster of houses surrounded by verdant green, from where a track winds up the mountainside to a spot

at 1,100 meters known as the Batad Saddle. Reached only via footpaths and the rare off-road vehicle, the Saddle perches right on top of a large natural bowl, which is filled with elevated terraces and the village of Batad below. There are guesthouses to spend the night in, and guides are available to trek across the mountains back to Banaue, a trip of two to four days, which takes in some of the most dramatic terrace scenery in the Cordillera, passing farmers doing dyke repair and plowing with their water buffalo, amid an artist’s palette and collage of brilliant color. While the terraces around Banaue are mud-walled, the Batad fields have amphitheater-like stonewalls around them, and the work put in to create and maintain them is quite phenomenal. Batad is one of these villages that time seems to have forgotten, surrounded by mountains, far from roads, and well
off the grid. While electricity reached here in 2008, there still is no Internet, and even phone signals rarely work. A common sight here is to see cell phones hung up on a clothesline out in the fields, with the owner waiting for a signal to touch down. While Batad sees its fair share of backpackers and intrepid travelers, villages like Cambulo and Pula farther afield see almost none. Getting to these hamlets requires carrying a pack, preferably hiring a local guide, and negotiating the slippery and narrow elevated paths that meander from terrace to terrace, giving one an immense appreciation for just how talented the Ifugao are. The paths here have been used for centuries, and even today, it is common to see old Ifugao men nimbly making their way up the mountainsides enroute to Banaue to buy supplies, or perhaps to find transport to Manila to visit grandchildren who have moved away.
While the old men remain hearty, the children have it slightly easier. Youngsters in Batad these days attend school in Banaue, either by getting a jeepney from the road junction down below the Batad Saddle, or via a rare jeep ride all the way up. In any case they still do plenty of walking and the entire region, remote as it is and surrounded by the Cordillera walls, remains a wonderful slice of rural Philippine life, and a spot that is well worth making the effort to get to experience an age-old way of life.

The only way to get to Banaue is via bus. Overnight coaches leave from both Manila and Baguio, taking about nine hours. The nearest airport is in Cauayan, but this still leaves you some six hours from Banaue. Once in Banaue, you can hire jeeps to get directly up to the Batad Saddle, or else take cheaper tricycles (motorcycle with a sidecar) to get to the Batad Junction from where it is about a 45-minute walk to climb up to the Saddle. Every day is different at the Ramada Plaza Bangkok Menam Riverside hotel. That is what makes the job so interesting and enjoyable. What would you have been if you did not become a concierge? I enjoy working with people and my university degree demonstrates that I am able to work in many different facets of business and commerce. I would still be undoubtedly working in a position that deals with people on a daily basis.
What makes a great concierge? It is important to be prepared at any time to assist guests. Every day we receive many enquiries from our guests seeking help and advice. It is important for a Concierge to have good knowledge, understanding and appreciation about the needs of business and leisure travelers, including transport options, dining out, the best shops for genuine Thai souvenirs and real bargains, tourist attractions and much more. It is impossible to know the answer to every question – but it is important for guests to know that we will do our best to search for the best solution and share it with them.
What annoys or angers you most? How do you react to them? A chief concierge is an important member of the hotel’s front of house team. I consider myself to be an ambassador for the Ramada Plaza Bangkok Menam Riverside and it is important that I remain calm – even during times of difficulty.
Describe a typical day at work
What’s the craziest thing you did as a concierge? Nothing too crazy so far – but who knows what will happen today or tomorrow. The funniest experience you have had in the job? There have been many amusing moments – but they are best kept secret for now.
Where to go for the best Thai restaurant -- I recommend Baan Khanitha restaurant at Asiatique. It is close to our hotel and the genuine Thai cuisine is outstanding Where to bring friends for a chill-out party -- I always suggest that they take a stroll along Silom Road or Sukhumvit area. There are so many fun bars, restaurants, and coffee shops Where to go for shopping -- Jatujak market. It’s very easy to reach from our hotel. Take our complimentary shuttle boat to Sathorn Pier and then travel via BTS skytrain. There is a station next to this famous weekend market. What is the easiest way to get back and forth the hotel -- Our shuttle boat is very convenient – it runs every 30 minutes from Saphan Thaksin (Sathorn Pier) to the hotel. Our private jetty is available 7 a.m. -11 p.m. Guests traveling by road from either of the city’s two international airports can enjoy easy transfers to the hotel via the expressway. How to avoid pimps, hecklers and scammers -- While this is the ‘Land of Smiles’ and the Thai people are naturally very friendly, I always encourage our guests to be cautious and to ignore offers and invitations received from strangers in the street and by some unscrupulous taxi drivers. he verdict is out: the vegetarian diet is the diet of the future. Scientists, nutritionists, and environmentalists all agree that we should be eating less meat. According to a 2014 study, there are approximately 375 million vegetarians in the world, and the number of people opting to go ‘flesh-free,’ whether vegan, vegetarian (lacto/ovo) or raw, is growing yearly.

The highest grouping of vegetarians to date is predominantly found in the Indian subcontinent, among those practicing ahimsa. One of the cardinal virtues of Jainism, Hinduism, and Buddhism, ahimsa teaches that you should not hurt, and by extension consume, another living being. On the other side of the world, many have also chosen this lifestyle because of the intensive and oftentimes cruel practices of modern animal husbandry. Others opt-in for the simple fact that a plant-based diet not only helps in weight loss but also, it has been shown to reduce the risk of bowel cancer. It is also credited as being the diet that just might save our planet. However, if you'd rather be marooned on a dessert island than even entertain the thought of giving up your right to beef, pork, or chicken, there are a few ways to improve your diet, ensure that animals are humanely treated and maintain physical health, without giving up what you love.
1. Start Slowly. Everyone
knows that going cold turkey is a surefire route to failure. The easiest way to begin is by switching up and introducing more vegetables into your diet. Start by making one meal a day plant based and when you’re comfortable and familiar with doing that, you can move on to having an entirely ‘meat-free day.’

However, the crunchy, flavorful, and intriguing quinoa charcoal burger is definitely worth a visit, as are the highly addictive tofu satay skewers. Bonita Cafe and Social Club (56/3 Pan Rd, 02 637 9541) -- Run by the friendliest owners you’ll ever meet, this restaurant has a very inviting ‘home-style’ to it. Although small, they cater to vegans; vegetarians and
you’ll even find gluten-free and raw dishes on the menu. Come for Sunday brunch and sample their insanely good gluten free pancakes. Rasayana Retreat (57 Sukhumvit Soi 39, 02 662 4803-5) -- This cafe, located in front of the spa, boasts of delicious and visually stunning raw vegan dishes. Made without cooking, these fresh wholesome dishes are also meat, wheat, and diary free. The raw Hawaiian pizza, made with macadamia cream, is definitely a must try.

With options aplenty, a great vibe and classy interiors, Khun Churn does not disappoint. You won’t find any quorn-type, fake meats here, just well prepared, delectable dishes. The Place: Masaharu Morimoto, best known as one of the “Iron Chefs America,” recently opened his very own Morimoto in Bangkok, which is definitely one of the most exciting openings in town this year. Chef Morimoto first opened his eponymous restaurant chain in Philadelphia after training in Hiroshima, Japan, and New York's Nobu. After that, he opened branches across the US, as well as Wasabi by Morimoto in Mumbai and New Delhi, MorimotoXEX in Tokyo and more recently, Morimoto Bangkok. Located at Mahanakhon Cube, which is currently the talk of the town after it opened as the tallest building in Bangkok today, Morimoto Bangkok occupies an entire floor, and has sections for both individual or group dining. Morimoto Bangkok provides 165 seats within the woodsy dining room. You can select to sit near the semi- open kitchen or a terrace overlooking MahaNakhon building. There is a bar area designed with pre-and-post dinner drinking in mind. The Food: Chef Morimoto and executive chef Arnaud Drouville, head chef of Bangkok kitchen, have introduced dining experiences with local ingredients and regional flavors. Must-try is “Tuna Pizza” (THB390), which is Morimoto's signature dish. The pizza base is created from a crispy tortilla crust topped with tuna sashimi and a sprinkling of a tangy anchovy Aioli, olives, tomatoes, and jalapeño. The appetizers are fun, unique, and
beautifully presented. Try “Rock Shrimp Tempura” (THB320) with spicy kochujan and wasabi aioli. It's also the best-selling dish in New York! The Place: Last month, Sathorn welcomed a new charming speakeasy, Mikys Cocktail Bar on Pan Road, thanks to mixologist Michele Montauti, former head mixologist at J. Boroski and House on Sathorn. The name "Mikys" comes from the nickname that Michele got when he moved to Bangkok, where people found it hard to pronounce his name. Mikys is a place where Michele and his partner want guests to immerse theselves, and enjoy, their signature drinks. The Place: “Because Giving Time Is Love” is the main concept here. The food, by Chef Thanunya “Gai” Kaikaew, who is best known from Iron Chef Thailand TV show, displays a distinct playfulness that makes them hard not to like. The adorable enchanting white wood house in the leafy garden is decorated Colonial tearoom-style, with white furniture that creates a warm, easy-going atmosphere. The ground floor has a semi-open kitchen where you can see the chef and staff working, while there is a more private feel upstairs. Chef Gai said that his delicious, delicate souffle’ takes about 20 minutes to prepare but definitely worth the wait. The Food: Try the signature dish, “Lobster soufflé” (THB980). This fresh live lobster flown in from Canada for guaranteed freshness and then grilled, goes perfectly with soufflé. While the main dishes get lots

Try “Julie” (THB340), a sweet flavorful garnish with pure white flower, and a mix of Broker's gin, Mancino Bianco, earl grey tea, jasmine syrup, lime and egg white. It has become the most popular drink at Mikys so far. For the stronger cocktail with whiskey base, “Meticulous” (THB340) is a good choice for you. It's a mix of Evan Williams Whiskey, fresh watermelon juice, cinnamon syrup, lime and chocolate bitters. “In Pan Road” (THB340) is named after the road where the bar is. Michele sees Bangkok as a land of fresh fruits and so he creates drinks with Don Julio Reposado tequila, elderflower liqueur, pomegranate juice, rosemary syrup, lime and celery bitters. The Food: The cuisine is presented in bite-sized servings created by Chef Davide Calo, the executive Chef from OPUS. The menu is small but perfect for the place. For appetizers, be sure to try the Fin de Claire (THB490), fresh oysters imported from France and topped with shallot and vinegar dressing. You’ll love the very fresh, rich flavor and with a slight sweetness. Another comes in small pieces, Salmon Cubes (THB 290), which is marinated salmon, caramelized onion, orange, strawberry and balsamic caviar. With only four pieces per serving, you will probably want to ask for more. Next up, Beef Fajitas (THB490) packed with Australian beef tenderloin, peppers, tomato confit and honey mustard sauce. The quality of meat is taken very seriously here. The

nother big food festival is coming our way next month when the first “Bangkok Gourmet Festival,” sponsored by the True Group, gets underway Nov. 4-6 at Siam Paragon. The three-day food event will be held at the spacious Royal Paragon Hall on the 5th floor of Siam Paragon Shopping Center where fine food connoisseurs can enjoy numerous food items and culinary innovations in food culture. “Nowadays, people are paying greater attention to fine tasting cuisines. They look forward to enjoying dining experiences provided by world-class restaurants and Michelin-starred chefs,” says Ongard Prapakamol, director of the board, True Visions Group. “The Bangkok Gourmet Festival 2016 is expected to make Bangkok the center of fine dining scene with Michelin star inspired restaurants and leading Thai restaurants, and could grow into one of the best food festivals in Southeast

Foodlovers will be treated to a creative “bite-size” culinary tasting experience from more than 40 fine dining restaurants in Bangkok. Chef Supachai Jankai, who joined AVANI Atrium Bangkok on Sept. 1 as the hotel’s head pastry chef, brings with him 12 years of experience in classic baking and an innovative approach to the culinary arts. hailand has so many interesting attractions, and because I am here as my brother’s guest, I try to cram as many places as I can to my day to make my entire holiday unforgettable. I know it is impossible for me to visit all the provinces and experience the great diversity of Thai attractions so I joined a trip to Ang Thong and Ayutthaya provinces recently, if only to see the much talked-about former capital of Siam, which I was told, was comparable to the First World cities in grandeur and pomp at it its heyday. I was disappointed. The trip to the historical ruins was certainly the highlight, as they allowed me to immerse myself in the days of good ol’ Siam, and I really had some goose bumps as I walked around, imagining how many kings and queens have walked the pathways that I am now treading on. Even though there is now only ruins and relics, certainly shadows of a great
past, all over, I can't help but think about how great it had been in its halcyon days. I was delighted to find that the place and its people continue to be proud of their heritage, and are bent on preserving whatever they can of their rich history and culture. As I visited the other attractions like the ancient market where they still recreate the atmosphere and folklore of the past, at the Ayutthaya resort where we did not only get to enjoy great Thai food but witness how the old culinary arts remain alive today, and to a wonderful Thai dinner at sunset by the river being watched over by the chedi said to be holding the remains of Queen Suriyothai as colorful rice barges ply along, I was silently wishing I was alive during those old beautiful days. There wasn’t time enough to see more – but it was enough for me at this time. for I know I will be back anyway, and I will stay longer than a day!
