EDITOR'S NOTE

A Rush of Excitement

I

t’s de javu all over again – as one famous American journalist once said – the feeling that came over me as we were putting this issue to bed; but a good feeling it was. The rush of excitement in beating an avalanche of deadlines to close a special issue was such that I felt like a nerve-frayed groom getting ready for my big wedding day. Of course the simile had something to do our October theme, which is “Weddings & Honeymoons,” but really it is more than that. This issue marks my first full year with Look East since my big comeback last year, and for some reasons, all the enjoyable, happy moments I have had working for this magazine in my first nine years (before this one) just came back gushing like a flood. Ah, how rotund life is, indeed. As you browse through our pages this issue, don’t be surprised if you get a sense of that personal excitement of mine. It could start with our main wedding articles, which cover more than a quarter or so of this edition. Inspired by the kingdom’s distinct attractiveness as one of the world’s preferred hub for destination weddings, and supported by many partners more generously than ever as you will notice, who wouldn’t get excited with that? Then, there’s our Travel Section. Our sub-theme spotlights the Northeast of Thailand, which is also another source of excitement, as we seldom focus on this part of the country indeed. This region of

the country has in fact so much to offer to those in search of the “un-touristic,” if you will, that we even got Miss Universe 2005 Natalie Glebova to share with us her recent experiences there, particularly in Ubon Ratchathani. Exciting, huh? And for our outbound feature, we’re taking you to the “Southeast Asian Alpine,” Mount Kinabalu in Sabah. If mountain climbing gives such an adrenalin rush, try this one. Even just reading about it already lets out “that love for action and outdoors’ juices” flowing. On a separate vein, we’re also excited about this new trend about “Co-Working Spaces” popping up around in Bangkok – where creatives and young entrepreneurs share spaces to build their budding businesses or what. We believe it’s another great reason that makes the city such a livable place for expats and tourists. And did I mention already about our Personality Profiles this issue? One, with international financial guru David Gibson-Moore; and another with a hotelier who has just gotten onboard in one of our favorite hotels in the capital, Ian Barrow, the new general manager of Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok. And of course our Regular Sections reek with excitement as ever – to push the expression a bit -- as our writers let us in on Checking In: Trisara Phuket and Mandarin Oriental KL; and Wine & Dine reviews: Knock Bangkok, Siam Wisdom,

Mikkeler, Revolucion, Theo Mio, and Drunken Leprechaun, each unique and different, each with its own attractions to be proud of, and each worthy of your visit, definitely. But don’t let me spoil your reading excitement. This special issue of Look East Magazine is meant for your enjoyment as always. For sure, you will find something interesting, maybe something you can use in their travels, maaybe someting relate to, maybe something that will touch you, who knows -- maybe even something that will lend you your own de javu! Whatever, we’re pretty excited to get your feedback, please!

Thailand is exceeding all previous tourism arrival predictions despite the recent bombing incident in the capital, according to recent reports. The official target of 28.8 million inbound tourists this year is expected to exceed 30 million; a record. In their Hotel Trends Q2 2015, CBRE said Thailand saw a strong demand for hotels from local and foreign buyers. With a weaker baht, the report claims, the tourism market continued to recover strongly with total arrivals up 30% on last year. Arrivals from China are growing significantly and tourists from this market now account for 28% of total visitors. Bangkok is benefitting in particular from more short-break and independent visitors from China. The report also suggests that strong increases in visitor arrivals have continued to push up occupancy in Bangkok to 70% in Q2 2015, a huge improvement on the 50% recorded in the same period last year. ADR and RevPAR grew slightly, the report said. "Thailand Travel Grows 30%"

LOOKEAST | READER’S TALK

runs the banner in TTR Weekly's latest report, citing international tourist arrivals to Thailand improved 30.93%, January to July 2015, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports’ data. The data showed the country attracted 17,504,204 international visits during the first seven months of 2015 up from 13,368,979 visits during the same period last year. At the recent “Tourism Trends in Thailand” seminar at Bangkok's Assumption University, experts suggested that inbound tourism arrivals would reach 30-31 million for 2015. Despite the fallout from the Bangkok blast, The Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT) is also feeling bullish enough to revise up its expected forecast from 28.8 million to 30 million inbound tourists this year. TCT president Ittirit Kinglake said 8.1 million international tourists are expected to visit in the 4th quarter, up 9% from the same period last year. "The Erawan bomb blast in Bangkok last month hit the sector but

only for a short time,” he said. “This will not affect the industry during the coming high season." Reports also show that since the downturn in Russian tourists, due to the weakened ruble, the China market has edged even further ahead as the dominant tourist market in Thailand. Eight million Chinese visitors are expected this year. Thailand lost about 1.3 million global tourists due to the bomb blast but has bounced back quickly. Hong Kong for instance is set to withdraw its travel warning as of this writing. The Tourism Authority of Thailand has invited celebrities from Hong Kong and mainland China to visit the Erawan Shine to promote confidence in the city. Finally, the UNWTO reported that Asia and the Pacific recorded a 5% increase in international arrivals in the first half of the year. (Editor's Note: Andrew J. TRAVEL MY FAVORITE PLACE

THE LOCAL

THE EXPAT

THE TOURIST

My favorite place:Besides Bangkok, there are so many places in Thailand that I consider my favorites. Bring there: Just the usual sense of adventure, I guess. Must-do: In Bangkok, it’s shopping and spas; in Chiangrai, it’s the elephant rides; in Chiang Mai, I love visiting the temples and the night markets: in Isaan, visiting Phu Wiang National Park and Phu Pa Man National Park; and in Koh Samui, it’s all about sunbathing and swimming. Must-see: The Grand Palace and Sunday Market in Bangkok; the Golden Triangle, Rong Koon Temple, and Doi Tung in Chiangrai; and Bhubing Palace in Chiang Mai; and oh, the waterfalls of Koh Samui. Must-buy: Mudmee silk and Chinese sausage in Khon Kaen, Borsang umbrellas in Chiang Mai, paper lanterns and tea in Chiangrai, and pearls in Koh Samui. Eat at: Crab and Claw Restaurant at EM Quartier, Bangkok; Le Petip Café in Chiangrai; Good View in Chiang Mai; the Treat House in Khon Kaen; Sabieng Lay in Koh Samui. Drink at: Blue Sky, Centara Grand at Central Ladprao; Par Club in Chaingrai; U-Bar in Khon Kaen; and Ice Bar in Chaweng, Samui. Sleep at: Siam Kempinski in Bangkok; Le Meridien in Chiangrai; Pulman in Khon Kaen; Dhara Devi in Chiang Mai; and Conrad Resort in Samui.

My favorite place: It has to be Bangkok. There’s something for everyone here, and surprisingly enough a lot of hidden corners to enjoy a quieter life with the family while still having all the modern city conveniences. Bring there: Enough money for a satisfying shopping experience, as well as comfortable shoes to walk around in to explore Bangkok’s many sights. Must-do: A stroll around Lumpini Park. In the morning you can observe people from all walks of life and on the weekends it’s also great to take my family here to unwind. Must-see: Either Wat Po to try an authentic Thai massage, or the sights and sounds of Asiatique The Riverfront: whether it’s for food, shopping, or enjoying activities, it’s a great choice for tourists and expats. Must-buy: Clothing. Be it chic ensembles from local designers, a tailor-made suit, or wholesale deals, Bangkok has you covered. Eat at: The authentic Italian flavors of Il Bolognese Trattoria never disappoint - and it’s right in my neighborhood. But for Thai food, nothing beats a nice home-cooked meal shared with my family. Drink at: The original Rocket Coffee Bar in Sathorn 12. Another is Moko Coffee & Eatery, also in Sathorn. Sleep at: Novotel Bangkok Platinum Pratunam. It’s great for shopaholics.

My favorite place: Bangkok, as I really have yet to explore the rest of Thailand. Bring there: Lots of adrenalin and energy for the thrills and activities the city offers to 30-something folk like me. Must-do: I guess my age yearns for adventurous and fun stuff. So after the usual city tour by bike, some explorations by the river and a ride to some exciting places where the mainstream tourists fear to tread, I always like to enjoy the local nightlife. Sukhumvit 11, Thonglor and Ekkamai, even RCA! Oh, and the exotic street food offerings are definitely a musttry. Must-see: The amazing rooftop bars and restaurants! I just loved them. Must-buy: I’m not much of a shopping person. Eat at: La Vue, Siam@Siam Bangkok: food is great, service is impeccable, and great views of the city skyline as well. Drink at: Intensity for the early evening cheap drinks, and then as the night moves on go to any of the more uppity hipster places such as SceneSpace in Thonglor, if not one of the high-end bars such as Ku De Ta. Sleep at: There are a number of budget accommodation options. I’d go for Hotel Indigo, Siam@Siam, Dream, Amara Bangkok, and maybe W Bangkok – each unique in their own right – and all with a trendy hipster vibe.

weddings & honeymoons!

A

f riend was asked why he enjoys photographing weddings in Thailand. His reply has always been the same: “In Thailand, I’ll never get a Bridezilla.” The comment is half joke and half serious. To simply call Thailand laidback would be letting it off light. In Thailand “sabai-sabai” is more than just a catchphrase. It is almost a way of life (think Hakuna Matata from the “Lion King”). So, crazy, control-freak brides will never quite find a fit in the “Land of Smiles.” But for the sane majority of couples out there looking for beauty, value, and a place that will loom as long and large in the mind as the love felt for one another, Thailand is the perfect place. Destination Weddings is a big market for Thailand. From India alone, around 200 couples come to Thailand to get married each year. The "big fat Indian wedding" market is said to be worth an estimated THB550-million a year for the kingdom. Add to that the numbers from the U.K., Europe, not to mention Russia and China, and the number

COVER STORY WEDDINGS IN THAILAND

swells up further, making the country the Destination Wedding capital of the world indeed! The most obvious reason foreigners come to Thailand to get married is the stunning, otherworldly beauty of its beaches. But there are other reasons as well. The southern region of the kingdom are flanked, both on the east and on the west, by bodies of water that give guests their pick of numerous beach options. You have the picturesque Andaman Sea -- featured in films, swimsuit shoots, calendars, and postcards for almost as long as people have had film. This is where the first exotic images that lured foreigners to Thailand first came from. The jutting rock formations that burst out from the sea in violently straight lines, juxtaposed with the calm, clear deepblues and greens of the ocean waters are the stuff of imagination. It’s no wonder the land facing the Andaman Sea is also the playground to Asia’s wealthy elite and home to some of the most luxurious properties in the region, and possibly the world. On this side of Thailand you

want to go all-out to get the most breathtaking views and top-level service. There’s so many popular destinations around the Andaman, i.e., in Krabi: Phulay Bay,A Ritz Carlton Reserve, Centara Grand Beach Resort & Spa, Sofitel Phookeethra Golf & Spa Resort, and Dusit Thani Krabi; and in Phuket: the Angsana, Banyan Tree Phuket, Dusit Laguna, Amanpuri, and many others (See our separate feature on Top Wedding Venues for more) – all ideal for perfect weddings. Over to the Gulf of Thailand, there are also many islands with white sand beaches, gorgeous sunsets, and similarly gorgeous geography. The beaches on the side of the Gulf are beautiful in their own right and present some of the best destination wedding values in Thailand in terms of cost. Here it’s possible to stretch your baht a bit further. Gulf side locations are intimate and fun. Islands like Samet give couples an intimate spot to marry that’s right around the bend from some rocking nightlife. There are also some amazing resorts

Putahracsa Hua Hin

Pattaya is a clear top favorite of wedding couples not only because of its easy accessibility from the capital, but also because of the exemplary facilities and services at resorts such as Dusit Thani Pattaya, the Royal Cliff group, Hilton Pattaya, Pattaya Marriott, Sheraton Pattaya, Amari Pattaya, among others. Here, there is no dearth of options for every wedding taste and budget indeed. Hua Hin and Cha-Am are also popular for weddings and honeymoons, thanks to resorts such as Hilton Hua Hin, Sheraton Hua Hin, InterContinental Hua HIn, Centara Grand Hua Hin, Anantara Hua Hin, Dusit Thani Hua Hin, V Villas and Putahracsa resorts, among others -- all vying for a chunk of the coveted Destination Weddings' pie. And we haven’t even mentioned Chiang Mai yet, another popular destination wedding favorite, especially for those who want traditional Thai-style or Lanna-type wedding ceremonies.

The ones we have mentioned are just but a few, of course, because there are several others that can offer stunning wedding ceremonies at a fraction of the price that some major resorts charge, which brings us to the next reason foreigners choose Thailand as their wedding spot: the amazing value. I’m hesitant to use the word cheap as that would convey thoughts of shoddy quality or low-grade service, and many of the places we’ll talk about later are far from cheap. But in Thailand the money

Needless to say, Koh Samui – farther on the southern part of the Gulf -- has a number of five-star resorts that are perfect for destination weddings. Names such as Conrad Samui, InterContinental Ban Taling Ngam, Four Seasons Samui, Sheraton Samui, and Tongsai Bay, among others, not to mention the many new boutique properties that are proliferating on the island lately, are perfect, not only for weddings but also for honeymoons. For those looking for wedding locations close to Bangkok, there is Hua Hin, Cha Am, Kanchanaburi, and Pattaya, in addition to the emerging as new wedding destination hotspots we have already mentioned.

goes farther for what you pay for indeed. You might pay the same as a standard room back in Europe or the U.S., but the quality of the room is going to be double or triple at the same dollar cost back home. How much does a wedding in Thailand cost? It really depends on many factors. But here’s an insight from www.weddingsinthailand. com: “The average cost of a wedding in the U.K. or Australia is around 20,000GBP (37,000AUD)…in contrast, a wedding in Thailand with 30 guests can cost only 6500GBP (11,000AUD). Most hotels and resorts offer attractive packages, which couples can choose from depending on the kind of wedding they want. For example, Amari Pattaya (Tel: 038 418 418; email:weddings.pattaya@ amari.com), which has both indoor and outdoor areas as well as a nearby beach to set up and decorate for

Price ranges from THB 990 to THB 1,390 THB per person or THB 11,900 to THB 13,900 per table dependng on the sixe of guests. Along with the great rates that practically all hotels specializing in wedding events, couples can factor in some of the world’s most famous service and hospitality, which adds more value to the deals. Couples from all walks of life can find a comfortable spot to marry in Thailand, whether in a budget bungalow with a few of your mates, or a beyond five-star resort with spa treatments for guests, the finest champagne, and Kanye West emceeing your reception. together with those who matter most to them. They have the time to talk to everyone and relax a bit. With a wedding like this you have the freedom to make the day more than just a rapid blur of excitement. It’s these factors and a few other hard-to-convey intangibles that make Thailand a dream-wedding destination in my mind. I’ve seen couples from their early 20s all the way up into the 50s getting married here. Some are wild events that would make the exploits of “Hangover 2” seem childlike in comparison, and others are truly elegant, dignified affairs featuring celebrities and heads of state. But all of the Thailand weddings we’ve witnessed beautifully captured and reflected the spirit of the couples getting married. And we know that each wedding will create a truly unforgettable memory not only for the bride and groom but also for their guests!

The final reason foreigners choose Thailand for weddings has to do with memories. Thailand is a place that lives long and large in the mind. This isn’t a place where people usually do big, stuffy weddings though you certainly can and in fact, many big fat Indian weddings have been held here recently with as many as more than 400 guests! A typical Western-style wedding in Thailand will range in size anywhere from 10-60 or so guests although hotels can easily serve 100s, and they do. Usually the guests are traveling in from outside of the country and from some distance. While this might sound like a negative, it’s actually a positive for most couples. This weeds out the oddball distant relatives and loose friends of the family. When a destination requires commitment, you get only your closest friends and family. Since some travel was required, the wedding party will take a few days or a week together at the resort, treating it as a holiday or vacation. They’ll spend time bonding, playing games, and just celebrating the lives of the two people whose big day they all came to share. Rather than just having a quick day to catch up with friends and family, the couple now has a vacation

GREAT MEMORIES

Traditional Thai Wedding Probably the most common Thaistyle wedding that foreigners prefer is the exotic central Thai wedding. The colorful wedding style starts with the water blessing (rod num ask) and the traditional Thai engagement (kanmak), and then followed by other elements that can also be found in all kinds of weddings in Thailand like parades, exchanges of gifts, and music. A Million-Lotus Wedding Udon Thani, in northeast Thailand (Isan), holds a mass wedding ceremony that makes the wedding world take notice: A mass wedding event callled,“A Million Lotus Wedding,” inspired by Isan culture and wedding traditions. The wedding ceremony includes taking couples on a specially arranged city tour, aboard a beautifully decorated tram, which brings them to sacred sites to pay homage. The couples enter into marriage through a wrist-binding ceremony that is unique to Isan culture with the "millions of red lotus" at the wetlands of Kum Pavapi reservoir and Nong Han pond as backdrop.

Trang Underwater Wedding Another unique Thai wedding event -this time under water-takes place in Trang, southern Thailand. Couples get married under the sea during the “Trang Underwater Wedding Festival” held each year, every Feb. 14. Couples celebrate their love with a sequence of ceremonies, starting with a traditional Thai wedding ceremony, lavish processions and beach parties, and an underwater declaration of marriage vows at Koh Kradan. Phuket Baba Wedding Each June a mass wedding that is most unique happens in Phuket: the Baba Wedding. “Baba” refers to the Peranakan (Straits Chinese) people. They are descendants of the first Chinese immigrants who came to the island to work in the tin mines in the 19th century. Well-to-do Chinese immigrants celebrate their wedding at some of Phuket’s most elegant Sino-Portuguese mansions in the old town with elaborate preparations, and Thalang Road is decorated with red lanterns. The street celebrations include a lively parade, a lion dance, and more.

EXOTIC WEDDINGS

Lanna Wedding “Lanna” in general often refers to provinces in northern Thailand. One unique characteristic of this wedding is the “Shaman invokes spirits” ritual, when the bride and groom sit at a prepared place before the “shaman” starts the invoking of spirits ceremony by putting garlands on their heads. Following ancient beliefs the shaman calls back all 32 parts back with a local traditional language. Another one is the “Sacred thread tying ceremony,” when the shaman ties a sacred thread on the bride and groom’s wrists, the first one, before elder relatives follow.

ow about sashaying barefoot on burning coals, climbing steep bladed ladders, or piercing your cheeks with a sharp metal rod – and then parading around the city as if you don’t feel any pain at all? These “bizarre” feats are common during the Phuket Vegetarian Festival. It’s also common to see people acting like they were under trance; talking like a “medium” possessed by some kind of spirit from the nether world. These rituals are what make the festival what it is today: a major tourist attraction that thousands from all over the world take time to see. The “bizarre” feats have stolen

a bit the limelight off the festival’s other significant aspects but there are other reasons that make the festival interesting. Local residents of Chinese ancestry observe a strict 10-day vegetarian or vegan diet for purposes of spiritual cleansing and merit-making during this period, for one. “The festival is a manifestation of our community’s adherence to age-old beliefs and traditions,” says Somsak (not his real name), a Ma Song last year. A Ma Song is a devotee “possessed” by the gods. “It is rooted in the concept of selfpurification and a means to meritmaking.” When the chanting and

The festival is a manifestation of our community’s adherence to age-old beliefs and traditions. It is rooted in the concept of self-purification and a means to merit-making. drumming reverberate on the streets, when the smell of incense creates an eerie feel in the air, and when the entranced participants perform what to some of us may seem baffling, or even shocking, it is actually faith in action, believers say. (If you are fainthearted, you better dash off to Patong Beach right away!) The original reasons for holding the event may have been lost to many attendees, but when the devotees bring out the statues of their gods and demigods for the long procession that kicks off the festival, they are reaffirming some ancient beliefs that most, Somsak says “fill in somehow, something void in their modern lives.” The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is so unlike any other festivals in the world in that while it seems eager to surprise, and even to shock, it is actually full of “routine ceremonies” as most Thai festivals have. The afternoon before the festival proper begins devotees invite the “gods” to come down from heaven during a temple ceremony. They would raise a great pole called Go Teng, which is hung with nine lanterns at midnight, to mark the festival open. Two important gods -Yok Ong Hong Tae and Kiew Ong Tai Tae – are “invited” to preside over the opening ceremonies. Other gods are also invoked, such as Lam Tao, who keeps track of the living, and Pak Tao, who keeps track of the dead. Processions carrying images of these gods follow and then the more “familiar” aspects of the festival follow. This is when the Ma Song comes out and begin their feats of the weird and the bizarre. By this time, the Ma Song is supposed to possess supernatural powers. These powers, it is believed, allow them to perform self-torture without feeling pain and by doing so shift evil from another individual unto

themselves and bring good luck to the community. There are two kinds of Ma Song: those who, having had an intimation of impending doom, want to extend their lives; and the chosen ones, those “especially chosen by the gods” for their virtues and morality. Throughout the festival fireworks are lit and drums are sounded; the louder the better because as the Chinese believes noise drives away evil spirits. The festival ends with the meritmaking ceremonies (sadoh kroh) and the send-off for the gods on the last night. You should see the explosion of fireworks at this time! How come it is called Vegetarian Festival? Perhaps, because the performers -- to be rendered “pure” in body and mind – must eat only vegetarian food before they can do their feats. By refraining not only from eating meat and killing animals but also from avoiding all kinds of vices -- albeit only during the festival -- participants believe they become physically and mentally strong. They usually keep to a strict vegetarian diet for a varying number of days, but no less than three. The Phuket's Vegetarian Festival (“Jia Chai” in the Hokkien Chinese dialect) traces its beginnings in 1825 when the then-governor of Thalang, Praya Jerm, moved Phuket’s principal town from Ta Reua (Thalang District) to Get-Hoe in Kathu District. Kathu was then largely forests and jungles, and a lot of Chinese miners work at the tin mines there at the time. Different versions of the festival origins have since surfaced, varying depending on who’s telling it. But what’s important perhaps, is that today, the event articulates not only one of the most cherished traditions of the local residents with Chinese ancestry but also enhances Phuket's distinctive tourism identity.

Also of interest here is the journey to the Phimai Historical Park, which is just next to Korat city, and it contains one of the best preserved ancient Khmer temples in Thailand. It was the end point of an ancient road linking Angkor Wat with the rest of the Khmer kingdom. From Korat, you can head northeast to Buriram, Surin, and Si Saket provinces. While Surin has some small Khmer temples, it is more famously known for its yearly Elephant Roundup Festival, which occurs every third weekend in November. Thousands of elephants are brought in to re-enact ancient Thai battle scenes, engage in elephant polo matches, play football, and generally show off the multiple talents of the symbolic beasts. Surin city is a small town, more akin to a village, and is a great place to try Isaan favorites such as gai yang grilled chicken, usually served with som tam papaya salad and eaten with sticky rice, and if you’re brave enough, dig in to a plate of grilled insects like grasshoppers or beetles, which is considered to be a local delicacy in these parts. While in Surin, make sure to check out the Queen Sirikit Silk Center, where you can learn all about sericulture, or the making of silk. This is the center of the Thai silk cottage industry, which provides local employment and keeps an age-old tradition going. You can see everything here from silkworm incubation through to the final silk thread drying process along with weaving, as well as being able to purchase some of Thailand’s finest silk. This process can also be seen in Chonnabot, a weaving village near

Khon Kaen, another one of Isan’s provinces and largest cities. If you continue northeast from here, you’ll leave the hot dry plains and pickup the Mekong River. The provinces of Ubon Ratchathani, Mukdahan, and Nakhon Phanom can be found here, all providing spots to relax along the water’s edge, take a ride with a local boatman, look for the endangered Mekong giant catfish known as pla buek in Thai, and make a foray into Laos via one of the border crossings. Make sure to call in at That Phanom, a temple chedi located just outside of Nakhon Phanom that is one of the most popular Buddhist pilgrimage sites in these parts. There is a festival here held in April that features local dance and folk performances, and thousands of pilgrims descend on the chedi to pay their respects. From here, the Mekong curves due west, and in this direction one starts heading for Isan’s largest city, Udon Thani, which has almost a quarter of a million inhabitants. There are plenty of modern amenities to be found here, from good hotels and shopping malls to excellent restaurants and nightlife, but most folks come here to check out the nearby attraction of Ban Chiang. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was a prehistoric human habitation and burial spot. Ban Chiang was discovered when an American

archaeology student, living in the village in 1966, tripped while out for a walk, and fell right on top of several shards of ceramic jars, which turned out to be remnants of one of Asia’s oldest civilizations. Further research showed that the artifacts here were from around 1500 BC, making it the earliest prehistoric farming and habitation site in Southeast Asia. Just north of Udon is Nong Khai, a small town that straddles the Mekong and retains a laid back atmosphere. There are sunset cruises on the river and a bizarre Buddhist sculpture park called Sala Kaew Ku, but if you can, visit here in October when the Naga Fireball Festival is held. Mysteriously glowing orange fireballs have annually risen from the river, occurring at the end of Buddhist Lent, leading locals to tie them in to something spiritual and mysterious. However, recent scientific expeditions have found that flammable phosphine gas, which builds up from nearby marshes, is what causes the balls. Nevertheless, it can be an amazing spectacle to watch. West of Nong Khai, you enter the province of Loei, which topographically belongs in northern Thailand and not the northeast. Large mountains, cascading falls, and stunning natural beauty make up much of Loei, making it a magnet

Tourist await for the "Naga Fireball "phenomenon in Nong Khai. Weaving silk in Korat.

for nature lovers. There are several national parks here, the top one of which is Phu Kradueng, a 1,300m high tabletop mesa where one can camp and overlook seas of mist in the valleys below. There has been talk of building a cable car up to the top, but for now, the only way to get here is via the good old fashioned on-foot route and under one’s own steam, although porters can be hired to haul gear up the 6km-trail to the summit plateau. Of even more interest while in Loei if you are here in June is the wild and wacky Phi Ta Khon Festival, which takes place in the tiny Dan Sai village. Somewhat of a mix of Halloween, Mardi Gras, and a Grateful Dead concert rolled into one, this is a festival with pagan roots that keeps the spirits appeased and asks for decent rains. The tiny village erupts for several days of nonstop partying, with everyone dressed in colorful ghost masks dancing to Isan

mor lam tunes. It is also an exercise in penile creativity, most likely related to fertility rites, as most of the village men carry huge phallic swords and clubs, which they use to teasingly prod and cajole all the boozed up ladies who hoot, holler, and grab back! Absolutely not to be missed. To complete your trip, head back south and call in at Khon Kaen, a large modern university city with an excellent national museum and there is even a large lake in the center of town. Make sure to visit Ban Kok Sanga while here, a small village noted for its herbal medicine, but even more so for its king cobra snake shows. The village has been breeding cobras in captivity for ages, and locals put on some adrenaline-rousing performances, getting the highly venomous snakes to box, dance, and tantalize the highly entertained crowds.

Getting Around: Various airlines fly daily to Udon, Ubon, and Khon Kaen, which are the main gateways to Isan. Korat is easily reached by both bus and train from Bangkok, and buses go almost everywhere between cities in the northeast. Stay: There are plenty of places to stay but for a classy touch, check out the Isan Boutique Collection (www.facebook.com/ isanboutiquecollection) Festivals: Some of Thailand’s best festivals take place in Isan, such as the "Surin Elephant Roundup" in November, "Ubon Candle Festival" in July, "Phi Ta Khon" in Loei in June, "Naga Fireball Festival" in Nong Khai in October, and the "Bun Bang Fai Rocket Festival" in May, the biggest of which is held in Yasothon.

hile Malaysia often doesn’t get as much exciting travel press compared to its other ASEAN neighbors, many forget that it’s not just Penang,Kuala Lumpur, and Peninsular Malaysia that make up the country. The Malay states of Sabah and Sarawak are part of the wild island of Borneo, and it’s here that you’ll find Mount Kinabalu, which at 4,095m is the highest peak between the east end of the Himalayas and Puncak Jaya in West Papua. The mountain and the 750sqkm-national park around it is a stunningly beautiful place, and well-worth the two-day climb up to its alpine summit, which makes it one of Southeast Asia’s premier adventure travel highlights. Mount Kinabalu was first climbed in 1851 by the British colonial Hugh Low, who reached the summit plateau with a local Dusun guide after three weeks of forging a trail through the jungle from the base of the mountain. However, Low never made it to the true summit due to exhaustion, and it

took another 37 years before zoologist John Whitehead stood on Low’s Peak. These days, the summit of Mount Kinabalu is far more attainable, but it is still a long slog up from the bottom and brutally taxing on the knees, quadriceps, and calves. While the main route up is not difficult, it is equivalent of getting on a Stairmaster for six hours a day, so best to be prepared. It’s not just the amazing views from the top that lure visitors to Mount Kinabalu. The forests below are home to some of the highest plant life biodiversity in the world. Some 5,000 to 6,000 plant species are found in the varied climactic zones that make up the mountainous environment, from tropical rainforest jungle down at the bottom all the way up to the frozen alpine zone conditions found at the summit. At least ten per cent of all of these plant species cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Along with the plants, over 600 species of butterflies, 300 types of different birds, and another 100 or so mammals also live

here. Endemic carnivorous Nepenthes pitcher plants, rare orchids, and the world’s largest flower the rafflesia are just some of the jungle flora to be found here. Compared to trekking in Europe or North America, the going here is pretty cushy, as there is no need to carry a tent, sleeping bag or food, not to mention that filtered drinking water is available in water tanks next to shelters, which line the route every kilometer or so all the way up to the Laban Rata hut. This is a comfortable climbing lodge nestled under the main peak at 3,200 meters up, providing heated dorm rooms, buffet meals, and hot showers. Additionally, porters are also available for those who want them. Almost all of whom are members of the local Dusun people and a large percentage of them are women, with the earnings they make going into their families and the local community. It still takes a lot of stamina and sweat to scale the mountain though, as the path climbs an endless series of man-made stairs up past wild ginger,

orchids, ferns, and the occasional Nepenthes rajah - the largest pitcher plant in the world - which is a giant plant that can hold over three liters of water in its basin and even has drowned rats in its conical bow! From the humid jungle below, one eventually emerges into an alpine zone, where stunted shrub branches lie bent over by the wind, usually shrouded in a dense mist that covers the higher reaches of the peak by mid-afternoon. It’s here that the Laban Rata hut is found, surrounded by gnarled pygmy trees that are over 100-years-old, and where trekkers take a rest before attempting the summit. It’s only two kilometers from the hut to the summit, but it takes over three hours, much of it clambering over huge granite blocks that have some steep sections. While not technically difficult, there are ropes to hold onto, and as most climbers set out at 2:00-3:00 a.m. to see the sunrise, there is no light save

LOOKEAST | TRAVEL

for a long queue of headlamps. Additionally, the altitude up here gets pretty thin and many trekkers start feeling out of breath, which is the first symptom of mild altitude sickness. It’s usually very windy and cold up there, requiring fleece jackets and good outerwear, quite the opposite to the shorts and t-shirts worn in the steamy jungles below. It’s all worth the effort though. From the summit plateau there are tremendous views of the surrounding Crocker Range peaks silhouetted against the colors of the dawn and rising sun, and on clear days, one can see all the way to the China Sea. The granite rock up here is beautiful, and for those who want even more adventure, the mountain tourism commission has set up a via ferrata climbing cable system on some of the more challenging routes, where guides lead novice and more advanced climbers up stone walls equipped with cables that they can clip into from the safety of a harness.

Regardless of route choice, it is now required to have a guide on every route on Kinabalu, but even couples and individual travellers can join up down below to go as a group with a local guide. For the truly masochistic, the Kinabalu Climbathon takes place every October. Italian Marco De Gasperi holds the record for this crazy mountain race, reaching the top in a sickening two-and-a half hours, and then back down in another hour! Do note that while Mount Kinabalu was affected by a severe earthquake, which struck the area earlier in 2015, the climbing route has been repaired and reopened as of Sept. 1. There is a permit and quota system in place on the mountain, so make sure to make advance bookings before heading out. The Kinabalu Climb Booking Center (www. mountkinabalu.com) handles all arrangements.

andarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur (KL) beckons to travelers visiting KL for leisure or for business. While younger than most of its siblings in the region – Mandarin Oriental KL opened in 1998 – the hotel carries the Mandarin torch proudly in exceeding guest expectations, both in its service and in its facilities. Both business and leisure travelers will find the hotel more than equip and ready to meet their holiday needs. The luxurious five-star hotel boasts 643 guestrooms, including 41

elegantly appointed suites. Obviously thoughtfully designed with comfort in mind, the rooms are tasteful, decorated with rich woods, plush fabrics, engaging artworks, and other luxurious features. The overall feel in the luxurious rooms is “residential,” homey if you will, and if you stay in any of the exclusive rooms at the Mandarin Oriental Club, you’ll enjoy the view of either the KLCC Park or the city’s impressive skyline. The F&B outlets are impressive, and you can eat and drink at any of the 10 restaurants and bars that provide a choice of menus that appeal to every palate. These include the Lai Po Heen, which serves classic Cantonese delicacies and dim sum; and the Casbah Lounge, where cocktails and beverages as well as snacks are the specialties. The modern grill selections at Mandarin Grill and MO Bar are also worthy of mention, as is the great breakfast buffet.

The hotel is very MICE-oriented, and its conference and banqueting facilities are solid testimonies to this. The property is not only home to the largest pillar-less Grand Ballroom in Kuala Lumpur and can accommodate up to 1,800 guests for a sit-down dinner, but also, there are 11 function rooms that can be configured for large-scale conferences and supported by a wide range of state-of-the art audio-visual equipment. There’s a Business & Conference Center that is equipped with the latest technology and offers a full range of professional secretarial services, all of which add to the Mandarin Oriental’s legendary service, professional expertise, and flair for creating successful events. But again, the hotel is not only for the business traveler. Even the most demanding leisure traveler will be pleased to find that the hotel can easily fulfill their requirements.

For one there is an award-winning spa, The Spa at Mandarin Oriental KL, where those looking for healing approach to well-being: body, mind, and soul can choose from a selection of spa, massage, and beauty treatments. And there are fitness and recreational facilities, which has been described by some guests as second to none in KL. KL is home to many fine hotels, but very few has a location as brilliant as Mandarin Oriental KL: just adjacent to the 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers, the hotel puts you right at the center of both the leisure and business aspects of the city -- ideal to enjoy KL and its attractions whatever your purpose for visiting, indeed!

The hotel is very MICEoriented, and its conference and banqueting facilities are solid testimonies to this.

xclusive. Intimate. Luxurious. Many resorts in Thailand use these catchphrases to lure travelers in. One resort that can easily live up to these descriptions in Phuket is Trisara. Since Trisara Phuket opened in 2004, the Thai-owned and managed resort has become popular with many travelers looking for a private, luxuriously appointed holiday home to enjoy the best of Phuket. Sitting within 40 acres of lush tropical gardens that rise gently from the 2,000m of absolute ocean frontage, the five-star offers a sense of total privacy – and more. the resort allows you to live your island paradise dreams. Trisara offers expansive oceanviews and spectacular sunsets, which here, which you can enjoy without leaving your pool suite or villa. There are 48 rooms-pool suites and villas- and eight of them are called the Trisara Signature Villas, are surrounded by lush tropical gardens that open over the pool to a wonderful sea view. On either side of a central living and dining pavilion of these signature villas sit two main bedrooms, which also have private access to the pool and decks outside. There’s a large 18m private infinity pool, and an open-plan teak house with outdoor living and dining furniture with views out to the sea. The villa is equipped with a full kitchen and you can avail of the services of a dedicated cook and housekeeper. There are of course other types of accommodation, including private residential villas that can be rented as well. But whatever room type you

choose, thoughtful details will not go unnoticed: oversized bathtubs, outdoor showers, cutting-edge technology, not to mention other modern conveniences that have now become basic for enjoyable stays. The dining and drinking venues can exceed one’s expectations. There’s the all-day dining venue The Deck; to Trisara Seafood, which was inspired by the iconic seafood restaurants on the French Riviera and Capri; and The Bar, which is a great place to enjoy amazing sunsets and after-dinner affairs. The Bar specializes in creative Asian and Western tapas, and offers a wide variety of wines from a wine cellar that has received awards from no less than the Wine Spectator magazine. And if you’re staying on a weekend, don’t miss the Sunday Jazz Brunch - when the beachfront bar becomes a celebration of fine wines, exquisite tapas, live cooking stations, and serves Phuket’s best desserts. Yearning for something authentically local: There’s the

Ancestral Thai restaurant, a unique experience that you will not easily forget. Or, you might prefer a private Royal Thai dinner prepared by a personal chef and waiter on the deck of one of the splendid private residences. For pampering, the resort has a Trisara Spa, which consists of six spa suites and a beauty salon. The spa is located near the reception area, but you can also enjoy most of the treatments in the privacy of your villa or suite. A staff at the hotel tells us that Trisara is all about letting guests enjoy an ultra-luxe holiday experience. But Trisara is really more than just experiencing the resort. It can be a great springboard to experiencing and discovering the real Phuket. Just ask any of the resort’s team members and they can help you with that. Have a wonderful stay!

t was one of those times when we were just looking for a place to stay, knowing we’ll be out of our room most of the time anyway to explore the local attractions; it didn't have to be a 5-star. We found one place that is really more than just somewhere to sleep – and at great value: OZO Pattaya. Located at Pattaya Sai Song Road, in the city center but in a less touristy neighborhood, OZO Pattaya is what the Onyx Group Hospitality people calls a “select service resort,” a hotel category that is just making inroads in Thailand. At the moment, there are only two OZOs in Thailand, this one and the one on Koh Samui. While both OZOs, the two hotels are as distinct and different as the localities where they are located. OZO Pattaya embodies the quintessential spirit of Pattaya: fast, exciting, easy, fun - a “grab and go” kind of thing, if you will. The hotel is modern but

by Percy Roxas unpretentious, much like this city that never sleeps, and its blend of “on-thego” convenience mixed with comfort – and may we add,we had one of the best sleeps in Pattaya. Let’s begin with the convenience. The hotel is within walking distance of the main streets, and Pattaya’s popular attractions are no more than a 15-minute walk away. That means whichever way you want to spend your Pattaya holiday, at the beach or out on the town, you know that when you’re back – at dusk or dawn – you can expect no hassle. The free-Wi-Fi, among the savvy facilities and services on offer, just makes the experience at the hotel even more convenient. For comfort? The rooms, instead of being ultra-luxuriously appointed, are smart, cozy, and easy. Simple like their names: "Sleep" and "Dream" rooms, and OZO suites – yet with all the must-haves one could ever wish: soft beds, fluffy pillows, multimedia panel, etc. – really more than what

we expect from a medium-scale property. The hotel’s easy and fun side is probably best reflected in the "grab and go fresh breakfast concept,” and the electronic concierge on the lobby. And hey, the staff might surprise you not only with their multitasking versatility but also with their own kind of welcome. They like to surprise guests at the lobby not only with their attentiveness but aslo with their musical talents! We thought some of the staff at the all-day dining restaurant could benefit from more customer service training, but no major complaints really. So there you go. Practical but stylish, OZO Pattaya makes the life of its guests a bit easier and a whole lot more fun. That’s exactly what we want from Pattaya, don’t we? mara Bangkok on Suriwongse Road, one of the newest hotels in the city, is fast becoming a new favorite for tourists and visitors in the capital. The reason, besides its great location and charming boutique facilities, is a team with a “cando” attitude and who are willing to exceed the expectations of guests more than 100 percent of the time. Chief concierge Wichai Jangkanipakul has been with the hotel for over a year now and leads this team. Wichai, a marketing and management graduate, displays an uncanny ability to listen and empathize with guests. “Guests often do not know what they want,” he explains, “They might be jet-lagged and stressed. Thus a concierge must be resourceful, which requires a good network; and a determination not to take no for an answer. He or she must be wellrounded, balanced, and must never stop learning. He or she must also have the ability to engage clients in an intelligent and informed conversation, without being overly opinionated.” What does he like most about his job? “Unquestionably, the people you meet,” he replies. “Not just clients, but suppliers too, and building long-term relationship with them.” Wichai describes his typical day at work as just “doing my best to develop myself and my coworkers.” Beyond the usual assistance he gives to guests, such as providing updated information and arranging hotel transportation for them, here are some of the tips that Wichai shares with his guests at Amara: Where to go for the best Thai restaurant: Baan Kanitha because of its authentic Thai food

Where to go for shopping: MBK, where you can find a verity of Thai products and great souvenirs

Where to bring their friends to chillout: AkaZa Bar, where they can enjoy a panoramic view of the Bangkok skyline and at the same time, promoting Amara Bangkok

Easiest way to get back and forth from the hotel: Take the BTS sky train, which is just around the corner.

How to avoid pimps, hecklers and scammers: By advising guests which places to avoid, and by telling them to stay away as much as the can from people recommending a bargain Best way to enjoy their holiday: Explore Thai culture and hospitality and everything that Thailand can offer!

LIFESTYLE PERSONALITIES

HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS Finance guru David Gibson-Moore has worked and lived in many parts of the world, but he has chosen Bangkok to be his home as it reflects his passion for Asian arts, culture, and history

H

e has spent his career in finance, has lived in many parts of the world, and owns properties in various locations. But the Irish-born, London-bred, and Oxford-educated David GibsonMoore has always had a soft spot for Bangkok. “Bangkok is a wonderful city,” says the Dubai-based banking consultant and advisor. “I love Asian culture and history, and that’s why I decided to buy an apartment at the State Tower 10 years ago.” David now rents out that apartment, but four years ago, he bought another unit at the same place where he now stays when he’s in town. This apartment became a showcase of his love and passion for culture and history. David has been collecting antiques and artifacts for 25 years now. Since his first visit to Bangkok many years ago, he’s been intrigued by the richness of its culture and history – and in particular the connection between Buddhism and Hinduism. His Bangkok apartment is a veritable ‘homage' to his great interest and profound appreciation of the Buddhist culture. “With this apartment I immediately saw an opportunity to have a place where I can put some of my best Asian collections together – something like a personal creation,” he says. Developing the apartment from scratch, David sought the help of a very knowledgeable friend who in turn requested an overall concept design for the apartment from the professor of interior design atChulalongkorn University for the overall concept design of the apartment, although he says he did not follow the blueprint to the letter. Looking around the apartment today, one gets a sense that it was decorated more by instinct than

by Percy Roxas anything else, although that instinct was orderly and creative indeed. Of course, he worked with a very good contractor. “There were limits of what can be done with the size of the residence but we had a good dialogue,” he says. “They were useful in getting my creative juices flowing.” Among the first things visitors to his residence notice are the very large ancient framed doors – there are three of them. In fact, in designing and decorating the residence, they had to work around the frames. But each piece in the residence – even the little ones – has a story to tell. Take the 18th century golf-leaf covered Mandalay Buddha with a young, friendly face and very classic pose, for example. “The pose does not only characterize a welcoming stance,” he says, “but it is also a symbol of good health.” There is also a 19th century Rattanakosin Buddha image, which is very distinctive from the Mandalay one. This Buddha’s face tends to be more severe than what the Ayutthaya artists normally made, David explains. These two intricate Buddha figures form part of his first antique collection, he told us later. At the center of the residence is a 200-year-old Chinese door, which David says he found in Chiang Mai. It looks heavy, like a gate that guards an ancient Chinese fortress. Who would have guessed that a modernist bathroom lurks behind it? But the surprises are not all big, heavy, or even old. Almost directly in front of this antique door across the hall by the sofa, is a prayer scroll box from Bali. But right on top on it hanging on the wall is a still life that is a bit off-theme from the rest and yet it works well with the overall décor. And just a few steps away is a huge wooden sculpture piece, which is really an ancient wooden sugar-crushing device that David

also bought from Chiang Mai. David acquires antiques not because of their age or their price but because of their intrinsic beauty and history. A little bit farther into the room is an antique bed from China. It seems a bit off-theme if you look at the small balcony nearby with its marble tiles and walls, potted plants, and a small fountain – until you notice the two Cambodian pillars standing near the fountain. Placed on both sides along the bed’s headboard are more relics: an 18th century, Tang Dynasty horse – a gift from a friend, David says – and another, a more modern-looking one, which provides an interesting contrast. There’s also a gilt lacquer scripture box, delicately painted with Ramakien figures. Now, the bedroom: Separated from the living room by an elaborate frame surrounding the matching wooden doors, it opens out onto an 18th century, gold-plated Ayutthayastyle Buddha that David says is in the pose of dispelling fear. David says he is not superstitious, but feng shui was obviously considered in designing the residence. The door leads to his bedroom, which is quite interesting with a mix and match of styles as well, from the fabrics to the surrounding décor. And then we proceeded to the garuda fronting the entrance door, which David says is a mythical expression of power and protection. David calls this garuda, “his lucky charm,” as he posed beside it afterwards. David obviously does not want to talk much about himself or his personal achievements, and would rather talk about his antiques and his love for Asian culture and history - as is showcased in his Bangkok apartment. But with that, he effectively told us more about himself.

“I have always loved antiques,” David tells us as he takes us on a tour of his apartment. “My parents instilled in me a love for them and we have lots of them around the houses in Dublin and London. I have been surrounded by antiques since I was a kid.”

LIFESTYLE PERSONALITIES

ENJOYING BANGKOK Ian Barrow, general manager of the Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok and the DoubleTree by HIlton Bangkok he has been in the capital for only a shot time, but he says he is really enjoying himself

B

orn in England, Ian Barrow immigrated to Perth, Australia with his parents as a oneyear-old under the “10 Pound Pom Scheme.” During this time, Australia was sparsely populated and needed people to help develop the country. Immigrants from the UK, lured by opportunity and the prospect of warmer weather, were charged 10 pounds for their fare while their offsprings traveled for free. Barrow's family settled in the Perth area, but when he was 14 they moved temporarily to Portugal for a couple of years where his father worked as an agricultural consultant. “This is probably how I got the travel bug,” Barrow relates, “I enjoyed the experience and the chance to see things that were new and different.” Back in Perth, he continued his schooling and enrolled at Perth University, majoring in Town Planning. Although this might seem unusual for someone who now works in the hospitality industry, Barrow says that in Australia, unlike Europe, most people get involved in the industry through jobs they get to help finance their schooling. “I worked in a variety of bars and restaurants in and around Perth,” he says. “Some friends and I even established a catering company. We didn't make much money, but it was good experience.” A major turning point occurred when the American's Cup yacht race came to Perth. “There were lots of parties and lots of chances to get involved in hospitality activities,” he says. “It made a big impression on me, especially the chances it presented for travel and seeing the world.” Eventually he started traveling in Australia and went to work in

by Michael Moore Melbourne and on the east coast. “After several jobs, I started working at an independent hotel that was managed by Radisson. This gave me the opportunity to travel to Radisson properties outside of Australia and I jumped at the chance to see more of the world.” He starting doing menial jobs such as washing dishes, cleaning toilets, and painting and other maintenance work, and then slowly worked his way up the corporate ladder. “I was unmarried and wanted to travel, so Radisson sent me to lots of different places. I worked at 10 or 11 different hotels in 17 years in places like Bangladesh, Nepal, China, and Malaysia. Surprisingly, during this time, he didn't have any training that specifically prepared him for management work. “It was all on-thejob-training,” he explains. “It is a great way to learn.” In 1991, however, Barrow's life underwent a major change when he was working at a Radisson property in Bali, Indonesia. “We had a massive open recruitment in which we interviewed more than 8,000 people,” he says. “This girl appeared in front of me wearing a white blouse and gray skirt like every other girl in the room. I started speaking to her in Bahasa Indonesia, but when she answered, it was with a beautiful British accent. We hired her almost immediately and I quickly got to know her and a short time later we were married.” It turned out that his wife-tobe had lived and gone to school in America while her mother attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison and later attended a school in England where she acquired her lovely accent.

Although marriage and fatherhood didn't eliminate Barrow's desire to travel, it did slow him a bit. “Having a family created a change in lifestyle,” he admits, “and I eventually left the Radisson to work in more senior management positions. I have been at the Hilton in Bangkok for only a short time, but I am really enjoying myself. Bangkok is a vibrant city with lots to do.” Does he have any regrets about his peripatetic life? “Not at all,” he quickly answers. “It has been rewarding and living overseas has provided my children with a cosmopolitan experience. They are multi-lingual and have a background that will serve them well in our everchanging but rapidly contracting world.” Working abroad, Barrow admits, has special challenges. “Every culture and country is different,” he points out, “and adjustments have to be made to adapt to this fact. Language is always a problem. The only way to effectively communicate with local staff and the world outside of the hotel is in the native tongue of the country. In Indonesia, this wasn't a problem as I learned Bahasa, but in China I had difficulties with the language and Thai is also proving to be a difficult language to learn.” “I am looking forward to working here in Bangkok,” Barrow continues. “There are a lot of challenges and the competition between the hotels is intense, but the Hilton has an excellent property and the staff are great.” After chatting with the ‘Travelin' Man from Australia,’ we are convinced the Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok and the DoubleTree Hilton Bangkok have nothing to worry about. They are in good hands.

Working abroad, Barrow admits, has special challenges. “Every culture and country is different,” he points out, “and adjustments have to be made to adapt to this fact.

oodies everywhere will rejoice at the idea of sampling Phuket’s street food stalls. Just wandering along the sois in Phuket Town will ignite your taste buds, as the smell of freshly barbecued meat fills the air with a tantalizing deliciousness that is impossible to ignore. From the markets and shacks to stalls on the side of the road and passing carts, Phuket offers its visitors some unique dishes that outshine many of the country’s top restaurants. To experience the true heart and soul of Phuket, one must experience its resident food culture and while street vendors can be found all over the island, Phuket Town is the place to go to sample some tasty eats. Be prepared to tuck in with gusto… Breakfast in the Street: Dim sum is the quintessential breakfast in Phuket for those searching for inexpensive, yet delicious, street food. by Katie Walsh (100-years-old) dim sum recipes on the island. Be prepared to get sticky, as chili sauce is always slathered onto the sweet dumplings and buns. Lock Tien Food Court for Lunch: Always busy with hungry locals, there are around 10 stalls to try here. O-ew is an acquired taste but remains one of Phuket’s most famous desserts that resembles a banana jelly and is sold throughout the court. Local Thais also enjoy popiah wrappers smothered in a fantastically sticky and sweet tamarind sauce, while braised pork and entrails are also on most menus and are far more delectable than they may sound. Hokkien Noodles: Huge pots of aromatic broths bubble away on the open stoves for 12 hours or more inside small stalls such as Pehteow Noodle. But as appetizing as these soups are, Hokkien noodles remain Phuket’s most esteemed hot dish and they come both stir-fried or in a soup. However you choose to try them, you can be sure you’ll want to go back

for seconds. Don't miss them when you're in Phuket. Street Snacks: Take a walk to Soi Soon Utis, where you will find a collection of historical food carts that sell everything from apong (a savory crispy pancake, served with fresh green vegetables) through to Fujianstyle omelets made with baby oysters known locally as o-tao. Kanom jeen can be enjoyed at any time of the day and they may take some assembly but it’s well worth the hard work. Select your curry, add rice noodles to the bowl, throw in some crunchy vegetables, a splash of sauce, a handful of spices and herbs and enjoy the art of making your own breakfast. Hands up who wants more! Haw mok is a signature street food dish widely available in Phuket and this spicy crab cake comes served in a banana leaf and really packs a punch as a great complement to kanom jeen.

WINE&DINE RESTAURANTS

THAI FINE DINING

Siam Wisdom, a classy Thai fine dining restaurant on Sukhumvit 31 will delight you --- and that might be an understatement!

Y

ou enter an elegant soi off Sukhumvit 31, just before Oasis Spa. You remember that there used to be a private house here, so conspicuous because of its Ayutthaya style of architecture and its vintage look. Now, the obviously modernized house carries a sign saying “Siam Wisdom.” You walk inside the inner sanctum, passing by a classy bar, straight to the central area where many business meetings and aftermeal socializing are conducted under the centuries-old tree in the middle. Your eyes roam, and amid a mixture of Thai and contemporary influences, you feel the décor growing on you. “Ah, not bad,” you tell yourself, as a smiling staff member asks you for your drink preference. You go to the second floor through a wooden staircase that seems to be from a time long gone. As the door opens, your jaw drops without effort: “This is not just another Thai restaurant indeed. This is as fine as a fine dining restaurant can be.” You choose a corner to enjoy

by Percy Roxas it all: the effervescent illumination courtesy of the open ceilings, the dark brown colors of the walls in some parts punctuated by paintings of inherently Thai subjects; the elegant chairs and table settings, which all conspire to whip up a sensuous delight. But this is not the highlight yet. That will come later when the delicious food is served. Oh, how your mouth waters in anticipation. You ask for the menu and made a quick skim: With the three kinds of set menus and the comprehensive a la carte choices, making a choice wasn’t easy. We opted for the Thai Classical Set Menu, which starts with an amuse bouche. You realize that the concept is more modern than traditional Thai. But who cares? With appetizers such as satay gai bann, thod man pla kha on, yum tua ploo, and meekrob Thai krob, you know you are going to enjoy your meal indeed. And we certainly did. Each of the appetizers is enough to whip up an appetite and you can order a sampler plate containing bits of each of them. What a time you have had relishing

the flavors, the texture, the colors, and the presentation. But this is only the beginning of the meal. After a break to enjoy a sorbet, the mains arrived one after another: keang kua poo, gai bann met ma muang, tom yum goong mae nam and nor mai farang phed hed hom. The combination of rich, aromatic, tangy, full-flavors before you - all wonderfully presented in the food artistry that Thailand is so famous for - makes you say simply: “Ah, very Thai, indeed.” So, you savor everything until your stomach shouts “im” (full). You think you’re done, but how can you resist the unique Thai desserts such as kao nom sai bua? What a meal it was indeed. There was great food to enjoy, and wonderful ambience to relish. It’s a pity that you cannot try everything in just one visit.

‘SOLE’ FOOD The colorful, inventive menu at Knock Bangkok in Thonglor is a mix of European and American comfort food, with a French twist and reflects Chef Chalee’s own diverse background. by Christopher Scott Dixon

T

hink of great partnerships: Laurel and Hardy, Lennon and McCartney, but shoes and food? Not at first glance an obvious or appealing combination, but talented Chef Chalee Kader has succeeded again as a partner in Knock Bangkok - a funky, modern restaurant and retail outlet flourishing in Thonglor. With his interests in neighboring Bad Motel and Beer Bridge, the Thonglor location between soi 15 and 17 in a converted three-storey townhouse was an obvious choice for Chalee in establishing the business.

Chalee explains his philosophy: ‘My partners and I have an attraction to sneakers and we also love to eat. Both are, for us, more than just functional but separate art forms; so we thought, why not have them in the same building?’ Note the Knock sign, then climb the bare-stone staircase and you see the glass-fronted restaurant to your right on the second floor; the shoe store is on the next floor. Cult kicks are featured here with famous brands from Nike Jordan to Nike Air and other labeled sports footwear worn by stars including former tennis greats such as Andre Agassi and Stan Smith. There are also other accessories and apparel available including socks, hats, bags and T-shirts. Downstairs, the restaurant’s dining area is narrow with small tables and a long high-backed black sofa on one side while opposite is a gray brick wall. All sharp lines and a minimalistic setting with appropriate hip-hop, rap and dance music to pump up the volume. The colorful and inventive menu

is a mix of European and American comfort food with a French twist and reflects Chalee’s own diverse background. He is half Thai and half Indian, with a dash of Chinese. Liquid refreshment was a zingy Red Bull and Honeycomb cocktail with ginger, peach liqueur and lemon. The real comb on a stick was to be dipped into the drink fusing even more flavors. Fried chicken and waffles served in a cupcake style with buttermilk, maple and maple butter cream were a moreish starter. An Instagram worthy steak tartare followed - a tenderloin of beef, roughly chopped with capers, truffle oil and mustard topped with a fried oyster -- visually impressive and most edible too. As the restaurant filled up, we continued to fill up also with a splendid sugar snap pea salad (sugar snap peas in red wine vinaigrette, quinoa, shallots and fried chorizo). We eased into a delicious slider next - ground chicken with sherry wine, pickled beetroot, shallots and onion jam all arriving in cute bite-size burger buns. For mains we sampled a Shrimp Po’Boy (fried popcorn shrimp on a sour dough base, prawn fat, pickled onions and pumpkin crisps ensuring -fab fusions all-round). Room was easily found for dessert - a seductive panna cotta and raspberry mousseline with Tahiti vanilla, marshmallows, rose water, raspberry crisps, and tuile. Knock BKK -- where you can satisfy your appetite for nostalgic kicks and for playful, creative food dishes too.

SHAKEN AND STIRRED There’s a new coocktail bar to watch out for in trendy Sathorn: Revolucion

T

by Christopher Scott Dixon

he Revolucion is here, but don’t worry. It is excitement, not panic on the streets as this Latin themed bar is causing a rumble on Sathorn Soi 10. The latest brainchild of bar maestro Sebastien Bonnefoi, who has already established three successful similar venues in China, Revolucion is only a 15-minute walk from the Chong Nonsi BTS. And it is already making its presence felt as one of the most distinctive places in town. Enter past a large raised and spacious wooden terrace and you are immediately immersed in a hedonistic Cuban-style environment. Fans whirl from the mirrored ceiling, which also boasts a chandelier and there is plenty of exposed concrete, brick and a stone floor. Colorful posters and images of Che Guevara and Bob Marley adorn the walls. Later in the evening you will see the DJ spinning tracks in a steel cage. The subdued lighting, Latin beats, and diverse crowd all create a brilliant vibe. Furniture is an intriguing

mix of swivel armchair bar stools, comfortable sofas and tin chairs next to oil drums which double as tables. Then there is the long bar, over 8m in length, and the main focus of Revolucion with some 500 types of spirits, including around 80 rums. A team of skilled bartenders, including Sebastien himself, entertains; as they mix, shake, strain, and pour their magical concoctions. Get your cameras ready for the occasional but dramatic flaring shows, which take place across the zinc bar. We tried several cocktails, including the signature Revolucion served in a cute, Polynesian tiki wooden mug, picture Easter Island statues, a punch-packing combo of rosemary, Anejo rum, passion fruit, apple juice, and syrup. A sweet Asian Colada was also enjoyedHavana 3YO, fused with lemongrass, fresh coconut water, passion fruit, homemade coconut syrup, kaffir lime all served inside a fresh Thai coconut. The Cherry Manhattan was literally smashing as the ice sphere with whiskey, vermouth, and homemade

cherry syrup inside had to be broken with a hammer. The varied and creative tapas menu is memorably tasty and fully complements the drinks. Try the flavour-filled crab quesadillas with cheddar cheese and smoked paprika. Also recommended is the shrimp ceviche-avocado, sour mango salsa, and coconut. Sathorn Soi 10 has gotten even hotter; come and join the great Revolucion!

short, well-conceived menu of pizzas, pastas, and classic Italian dishes, many of which are ideal for sharing, are the hallmarks of dining at Theo Mio, a recently opened Italian restaurant at the InterContinental Bangkok. There is also an imaginative selection of cocktails and other drinks, along with a comprehensive list of wines available by the glass or bottle. Theo Mio is sandwiched between the entrance to the President Tower office building and the lobby of the InterContinental, making it directly accessible from both the street and the hotel's lobby. The crossroads aspect of the restaurant gives it a vibrant feel that makes it a great place to see and be seen. There are about 75 seats, a black and white tile floor, a busy open kitchen, and a prominent counter where passers-by can purchase Italian deli items and knickknacks. The restaurant is the brainchild of well-known British chef, cookbook author, and TV personality, Theo Randall. His relationship with the InterContinental Hotels Group began in 2006 when his award-winning

Italian restaurant, Theo Randall at the InterContinental, opened at London's InterContinental Park Lane. Theo Mio represents his first venture outside of the UK and its opening was supervised by Randall himself before he handed the reins over to veteran chef Chris Beverley, a former colleague from the UK. Open for lunch, when it is popular with shoppers and the power lunch crowd; and dinner, when things become a bit more relaxed and subdued; Theo Mio shares the same menu for both occasions. The food tends to be uncomplicated fare that emphasizes the spices, flavors, and simple, fresh ingredients which make Italian food so popular. Basic ingredients are imported from Italy but fresh vegetables whenever possible are sourced locally to ensure freshness and sustainability. The menu relies on recipes from the London branch and changes frequently to reflect seasonality and what is available in the market. After gorging ourselves on some of the easy to share appetizers – the arancini di tartufo, a small crispy fall of fried rice and truffle was scrumptious –

we delved into some of the more elaborate items. Our favorite was the cappelletti di vitello with porcini mushroom sauce, made with pasta created on-site and formed into the little hats that make the dish famous. Equally enjoyable was the burrata e pepperoni Piemontese, a dollop of creamy imported burrata cheese served along with a wellcooked red bell pepper that had been stuffed with halved cherry tomatoes, basil, capers and salted anchovies. There is a small dessert menu that includes tiramisu, but our overwhelming favorite was the scrumptious lemon tart. To finish the meal, we were presented with a little brass hammer and a thin slab of delicious chocolate, which we bashed into little pieces with the hammer. A unique conclusion to what had been a very satisfying meal. Theo Mio G/F, InterContinental Bangkok, adjacent to the BTS Chidlom Tel: 02 656 0444;www.facebook. com/theomioitaliankitchen

WINE&DINE CRAFT BEER BAR

With 30 taps and countless specialist bottle selections from around the world, Mikkeller has burst onto the Bangkok craft beer scene with a vengeance, and has to be high on any craft beer lover's list by Dave Stamboulis

W

hile the connoisseur booze scene in Bangkok used to be only about fine wines and top mixologist bars, craft beer is now the modern craze, with Mikkeller Bangkok being one of the top players. With 30 taps and countless specialized bottle selections from around the world, Mikkeller has burst onto the Bangkok craft beer scene with a vengeance, and has to be high on any craft beer lover's list. The array of great boutique beers here is staggering, and the laidback tap house is a fine spot for sampling some sumptuous suds. Mikkeller has its origins in Denmark where it started as a gypsy brewer, which means it didn’t operate its own brewery but instead collaborated with others to create avant-garde brews. Now known as one of the most innovative and cutting edge brewers in the world, Mikkeller only has bars in Denmark, San Francisco, Reykjavik, Bangkok, and more recently a few spots in Tokyo and Seoul, making it fairly exclusive. This was probably the reasoning behind the Bangkok pub’s hidden niche, down a small deadend alleyway off of a minor soi in Ekkamai.

ON TOP OF CRAFT

The bar is housed in a beautiful large Thai home with a spacious garden, completely concealed from traffic and the rest of Ekkamai, but Mike MacDonald, one of the faces behind Mikkeller, says that this was quite intentional. MacDonald quips: “We wanted Mikkeller to be a destination, not just a spot people noticed while passing by. While we aren’t the only craft beer option in town, we offer rare and hard to find beer, something that is worth a special trek out to get.” The array of great boutique beers here is staggering, and the laidback tap house is indeed a fine spot for sampling some of the best brews you’ll find anywhere in the country. Some of the options really put beer in a whole new light in terms of fine drinking. On my last visit, I had a taste of the Vanilla Shake Imperial Stout, which had so many in-depth layers of tastes and sensations to it that for a few minutes I swore I was drinking a mug of fine coffee laced with Belgian chocolate, far more than I was drinking a glass of beer. They rotate the taps at Mikkeller regularly, so there’s always something new to come back for and try. Additionally, the bar also operates a bottle shop out back with hundreds of bottles of hard-to-find beer, cider, mead, and other craft creations, all available for take out and take home. Mikkeller has expanded its repertoire in recent months to include comfort food, along with starting a food and beer-pairing menu for true

gastronomes. Try a 12-hour braised short rib plate with pumpkin, lime, and tomato confit, which gets paired with an IPA, or perhaps truffle pasta with shimeji mushrooms and creme fraiche, which goes with a pint of wheat beer. Just make sure to copy the directions on how to get there from their website. Mikkeller 26 Ekkamai Soi 10 Yaek 2 Tel: 02 381 9891 www.mikkellerbangkok.com

IRISH WITH A TWIST

Listen to live bands, join the weekly quiz nights, support your favorite team on the big screen, or just relax and watch the world go by – at The Drunken Leprechaun

Percy Roxas

Percy Roxas

T

he sky was gray and the mood was dreary, as one can expect from a day like that rainy afternoon when we visited. But inside The Drunken Leprechaun, it’s as bright as day, metaphorically speaking. The house was packed, there was fun chatter all around, a clanking of mugs, and nothing but high-spirited cheer. The Irish “craic” or “larrikin” must really be contagious indeed! Located on the left entrance side on the ground floor of Four Points by Sheraton on Sukhumvit 15, The Drunken Leprechaun (www.facebook.com/ DrunkenLeprechaunBKK/timeline) is the latest Irish pub to open in Bangkok. Not that the city is in need of another Irish bar, and yet—judging from the crowd that flock to the pub every night since it opened in July— the pub seems to be an idea that is proving to be hugely popular.

“The Drunken Leprechaun is the friendliest Irish pub in town,” explains Olive Lee, who is helping to promote the new pub. “It offers delicious Irish pub grub and great drinks from Ireland and beyond – the place to be after work or for a perfect night-out.” In fact, TDL—as Olive calls it—opens at 10 a.m. It is a restaurant by day, but as the sun sets, it transforms into something else: a pub/sports bar with fantastic nightly entertainment and live sports screened within a laidback atmosphere. What differentiates TDL from other Irish pubs in town is the employment of "little people" who serve guests with first-class hospitality. But these “wee folks” are not here for the gimmick. TDL supports the Thailand community of little people, says Lee, by providing them with secured jobs that they enjoy. Those happy little people we saw that evening certainly seemed to prove her point; they provide us with great customer service. But the bar does not need to capitalize on the little people gimmick

to be a success. Just order some of the signature Irish comfort foods fish and chips, beef and Guinness pie, lamb stew, the weekly special Sunday Roast, and the fresh, unique “Drunken Leprechaun Ale”- and you’ll agree with us. The canapés are tasty, and there’s a complimentary “Dips & Dash” offered during the daily Happy Hours between 4 and 8 p.m. when guests can enjoy special prices on selected draught and bottled beers, wines, spirits, and cocktails. To top it all off, there is a live band on most nights of the week performing pop hits that all of us, no matter where we come from, can relate to and enjoy with.“Whether listening to our live bands,”says Olive, “pondering questions on our weekly quiz night, supporting your favorite team on our big screens, or just sitting back to relax and watch the world go by TDL is an ideal place to go and have fun.” With our experience in the Irish pub that night as yardstick, we can only say, “Right on, TDL!”
