EDITORIAL EDITOR'S NOTE

Romancing Thailand

W

e have hardly cured ourselves of the holiday hangovers and it’s already the second month of 2016. Looks like there will be no time to lose the holiday weight since we’re in for more upcoming celebrations and feasts -- with Valentine’s Day already tiptoeing on our doors not to mention the Chinese “Year of the Monkey,” which is already starting to knock-knock. Anyway, holiday-month or not, Lookeast is always surrounded by a sense of excitement in general anticipation of great days ahead, and we just hope that our team’s enthusiasm and positive vibes rub off on you our uber-loyal readers. Our main destination piece this issue focuses on the South of Thailand. Both sides of the southern peninsular shores, not to mention the islands and islets dotting the Andaman and Gulf of Thailand, are blessed by natural attractions and replete with very hospitable people, superb accommodation, delightful food, amazing adventure, and other endless leisure and fun opportunities. It’s an open secret: even the savviest traveler regards Thailand as one of the most romantic places in the world, and the southern hideaways have grown bigger in stature than ever as leading honeymoon and weddings destinations. Thus we take you to a Southern Escape and give you all the essentials – from what to expect, what to see and do, where to stay and the likes – that you’d need to enjoy your holiday even

more in Phuket, Krabi, Samui, Khao Lak, etc. We’ve got them all. But for those who can’t visit the South for some reasons, there’s a destination just about two hours away from Bangkok that promises a full array of fun-filled activities: Khao Yai. It’s the grape harvest season in Thailand’s own wine country and there’s so much to see, do, and explore whether you are a certified wine aficionado or not. And with the cold spell now upon us, is there a better time to visit Khao Yai than now? We’re also taking you through another interesting outbound excursion this month, this time in the Indonesian Borneo, where Bukit Lawan beckons as among the last places on Earth to really get a “Close Encounter of the Ape Kind.” Just another great destination that reflects the widely diverse experiences tourists are bound to enjoy in the ASEAN region, which is now promoting itself as one destination for all kinds of travelers, and which we are happy to report about every issue. Besides our main travel features, we are also featuring several articles dealing with “Business Travel” and “Luxury,” and of course, our regular sections -- Lifestyle, Personality, Wine & Dine, hotel and restaurant reviews, and more -- to give this edition the proverbial equilibrium. Through the years, Lookeast has been building a reputation as a magazine of record, a veritable treasure trove of relevant information, useful tips and guides, not to mention the hottest deals to enhance your travel and lifestyle

experience in the kingdom. So read on and enjoy them all. We’re continuing to receive great feedback about our team efforts; we are committed to continuing the good work, and we’d love to hear from you too! Drop us an e-mail at editor@ lookeastmagazine.com and percy@ lookeastmagazine.com to share your travel stories or give feedback, and don’t forget like or follow us on Facebook, instagram, or check out our website – www. lookeastmagazine.com -- for more news and updates. Until next month, enjoy your holidays throughout Thailand. Safe travels every one!

any people dream of a beach wedding but others give theirs a more adventurous twist: they say “I do” underwater – by joining in the now annual “Trang Underwater Wedding” ceremony. Trang’s Chamber of Commerce, the Tourism Authority of Thailand office in the municipality, other local authorities, and the local private sector are joining hands to launch the “Trang’s Underwater Wedding Ceremony” this year. The big wedding event, now marking its 20th anniversary, is usually held during the Valentine’s period. Trang is known for its picturesque valleys, limestone stalactites and stalagmites, and waterfalls and limestone caves, which undoubtedly creates a romantic atmosphere for the soon-to-be married couples, and the location fits perfectly with the event's “Moment of Love @Underwater Trang Station” concept. The province has been successfully showcasing its charms through this event, which also helps in promoting both local and

Many couples then continue this amazing experience at the Anantara Si Kao Resort and Spa where they can enjoy a beautiful sunset on the beach. There is also a fireworks display while couples watch a video footage of the ceremony. Other romantic activities are also available for the lovebirds. The wedding registration is legally binding and their vows are said during the evening. Waking up on Valentine’s Day, the couples then start their journey together leaving Trang’s wonderful blue sea and sky as newlyweds. Since its inception a few years ago, this special underwater ceremony has made Trang an acclaimed romantic destination where couples can not only exchange vows but also enjoy a fantastic honeymoon afterwards.

SOUTHERN SPECIALTIES

The jungle-clad islands in southern Thailand are commonly made up of postcard-perfect azure blue sea and powder-white sandy beaches, accompanied by a few swaying palm trees to complete the idealistic scenery. Thailand’s tourism industry is a major economic contributor, with statistics showing it injected a whopping THB 2.4 trillion to the country’s GDP in 2013 and although official figures are yet to be released, numbers are likely to have risen in both 2014 and 2015. Amazing Thailand, indeed. But there’s more to Southern Thailand than just its beaches – although they are breathtaking enough that they will knock the skis off even the most dedicated of winter sports lovers! World-class restaurants stand alongside lip-smackingly tasty local eateries, high-end resorts are

accompanied by charming-comerustic lodgings and if you are looking for somewhere to unwind, then check-in to a local spa for a wellearned detoxing break.

BEACHSIDE DINING IN KOH SAMUI

Valentine’s Day is, by its very nature, a time to celebrate love and romance, and festivities are indeed embraced all over the country. But no one can deny that the South of Thailand where the scenery oozes a naturally romantic ambience – is the perfect setting for rekindling a deep-rooted romance or stoking the fire of a new one. Koh Samui attracts more than 1.5 million tourists every year, but how do you avoid the throngs of visitors for a spot of romance? Leave your better half swooning after a private dinner for two on the beach

the paths surrounding the waterfalls at the Phanom Benja National Park, holding hands while cliff jumping in Railay or going on a kayaking expedition in the Ao Thalan Mangrove Forest. Deep water soloing with Basecamp Tonsai (www. basecamptonsai.com/) will get your heart pumping, as will dirt biking in the mountains and a hike up to the Tiger Cave Temple is a great opportunity to take in an awesome view together while exploring each other’s wilder sides. Sofitel Phokeethra Krabi has a golf course within its ground, and a luxury yacht to take you island hopping. Dusit Thani Krabi, Centara Grand Krabi Beach Resort, Phulay Bay Resort are among the other property worth checking out as a base for your extreme adventure holiday.

DIVING IN THE SIMILANS

Whoever said romance has to be all about flowers, massages, and special dinners has never experienced a diving adventure in the Similan Islands. Companies such as Oktavia Diver Center (www.oktaviadivecenter.com/) run liveaboard trips from Khao Lak and with operations in full swing around the Valentine’s period, there’s nothing more romantic than swimming alongside a whale shark. Why not go all out and forget about the possible embarrassment of proposing on a big screen at a football match or hiding a ring in her favorite dessert and risking a choking incident when you can go under water and do it with the fish? According to Operations Manager Jamie Walsh, diving in the Similans offers one of the “most romantic underwater experiences in the world” and in 2015, two happy bubble

BEACHCOMBING IN LIPE

If you are to heed advice from the likes of travel wizards Lonely Planet or listen to the recommendations on TripAdvisor, then you will already know that any true beach bunny at heart should head to Koh Lipe. There are three main beaches on the island accompanied by many often-private bays scattered along the small island’s coastline and couples can enjoy catching sunrises, sunsets, do some beach combing, a spot of snorkeling or take a leisurely dip in the sea.

adventure. But there is a simpler way to inject some romance into your Phuket trip by taking a sunset stroll with your loved one at Promthep Cape. Located on the island’s southernmost tip, this peninsula offers awesome ocean views and is a popular hotspot – so popular in fact that it attracts hundreds of visitors every day armed with cameras to capture the moment. You may not even need to get out of your resort to enjoy a scintillating sunset. Many hotels, such as the Banyan Tree Phuket and Angsana Laguna, offer great vantage points for that romantic time with your special one during sunset.

PHOSPHORESCENCE IN PHANG NGA BAY

Nestled between Krabi and Phuket, a trip to Phang Nga Bay should be thrown into the mix and there are a multitude of tours available in the bay for romancing couples,,

including cave explorations and sunset cruises. But arguably the most romantic experience here happens after the sun has gone down when the sea begins to sparkle as the phosphorescent plankton glows beneath the water’s surface. Take a kayak out with a tour agency such as Green Andaman Travel (www. greenandamantravel.com/) and marvel with some “ooohhs” and “aaahhs” as the plankton glistens each time your oar breaks the surface.

While some romantics will hike through the old rainforests in Khao Sok, others may prefer to link hands while jumping off limestone rock faces in Ao Nang to get their juices flowing. From the well-known tourist magnets such as Phuket and Samui to the better-kept secrets such as Khao Lak and Koh Lipe, southern Thailand is certainly amazing Thailand.

es, Virginia, Thailand makes its own wine. Thailand pioneered the so-called “New Latitude of Wine” between the 14th and 18th parallels in the Northern Hemisphere and today the 240-acre Khao Yai region, one of the three distinct wine regions of Thailand, is recognized for producing the best quality grape wines in the country. Every year, usually between mid-January and February, wine connoisseurs and their ilk flock to Khao Yai. It's because several vineyards in the region holds a “Harvest Festival” at this time not only to celebrate the season of grape

and wine, but also to showcase the scenery and various offerings at each vineyard. This year, the wine harvest festivals are being held this month because the grapes were delayed by about three weeks due to the drought, says a source from one of the vineyards. The normal pruning time for Khao Yai grapes is September and October. That said, the four major Khao Yai wineries are all ready for this year’s much-awaited festival, which has built a reputation as a not-to-be missed fun-filled activity for wine lovers and their friends. PB Valley will hold its “Harvest Festival” on Feb. 27, while

GranMonte Escape Khao Yai

GranMonte Vineyard and Winery has set its “Pick of the Season 2016” event on Feb. 13 and 14. What can we expect from this year’s “Harvest Festivals”? The program varies from vineyard to vineyard but as what GranMonte is organizing this year, an exciting lineup of activities await. “Every year, the arrival of the wine grape harvest season is heralded by a festival at our estate in Khao Yai, open to the public,” says Nikki Lohitnavy, heiress to the GranMonte estate and Thailand’s first female winemaker. “We will have booths of various activities such as dinner party and harvest competitions for

holidaying couples and families, including snacks, farm produce stalls, a Wine Bar in the Vineyard, and activity booths for children on Feb. 13-14. Entry to daytime festivities, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., will be free of charge on both days.” The GranMonte theme for this year is "Tropical Harvest Weekend (Email: marketing@granmonte. com or call 081-734-7049 and 081-488-4490). While the main events are happening on Feb. 13-14, GranMonte’s “Harvest Promotion” runs for the entire month. Guests can enjoy the full atmosphere of the harvest season with vineyard tours, grape picking, winery tour, wine tasting, and souvenir for the whole week. Prices vary depending on your booking, weekdays or weekends. For Village Farm, the festival starts with winetasting and cocktails at 5 p.m., then a dinner at 7 p.m. AT about 9 p.m., a local band will lead the guests to the vineyard to help harvest grapes. Village Farm has two harvest dates this year, said ist general manager, Viravadee Cholvanich. Meanwhile, PB Valley’s harvest festivities on Feb. 27 will feature a tour of the vineyards, including a grape picking competition, grapestomping demonstration, horse-riding show with beautiful Andalusian horses, introduction of wines by the in-house winemaker, a pre-dinner cocktail and a BBQ Buffet with live band performances. Special offers on wines of the estate will also be

available. Besides the Harvest Festival program, PB Valley has announced that due to increasing demand, the Wine Tasting Tours will be increased from the usual three. “We will have five schedules: at 9-10:30am, at noon, and at 1:30 to 3:30 pm, “ says Herbert PB Valley Khao Yai Winery is of course the first to grow wine grapes and set up a modern winery in the Khao Yai area thus is called the “Birthplace of the Khao Yai Wine Region.” Khun Prayut, the winemaker of PB Valley, is the first Thai who has studied oenology and winemaking and is thus Thailand’s first winemaker. THE VINEYARDS

Because Khao Yai located in the driest part of the country the northeast, with a high elevation that gives cool and dry conditions during the ripening period, the wine regions of Khai Yai are all worth a visit not only for the grapes and wine but also for the scenery and offering at each winery or vineyard. The wine region has four major vineyards, namely: PB Valley, GranMonte, and Alcidini to the west and Village Farm to the east. Owned by Dr. Piya Bhirombhadki, the visionary entrepreneur and owner of Boonrawd Brewery, PB Valley is where the region’s first vines were planted. WHY GO -- Even if you’re not

into wine and vineyards, the Khao Yai Region beckons as a destination. Besides seeing one of the oldest and best-known nature sanctuaries in Thailand -- an Asean and UNESCO World Heritage Site even – there is so much to enjoy: the cool weather, the diverse flora and the fauna, the variety of eco-tourism attractions and activities, and yes, the several vineyards just outside the national park. The vineyards are all set amid beautiful and varied landscapes and especially at this time of year. The wine harvest season, which runs from November to March every year, enhances the region’s peaceful aura, environmentally friendly atmosphere, not to mention its beautiful scenery and temperate climate. The wineries have their own on-site accommodation (with restaurants and other services and facilities) and offer activities and tours – wine tours are becoming popular – for a different, enjoyable holiday experience.

WHAT TO DO -- Until recently,

most people did not associate wine tours with the so-called traditional Thai holiday experience and hence, joining one can be very exciting. All the vineyards now offer professionally conducted, tailor-made, wine tours, which can include – depending on

the winery organizing them – private wine tasting, wine and fine dining pairing, vineyards and winery visits and strolls, cellar-door shopping, wine classes, and in some, even wine spa and Thai massage. It might also be interesting for visitors to witness first-hand sustainable and experimental viticulture (as in GranMonte), meeting the winemaker and how they support the local community. Of course, if those are not enough for you, you can book other activities such as visits to waterfalls, enjoying the nearby theme parks, and several world-class golf courses. The nearby Chokchai Farm – producer of meat and dairy products – might also be interesting to some.

WHEN TO GO -- November to March are best times to visit

SEE --

Each vineyard has an interesting story to tell as well as tons of activities on offer but the rest of the Khao Yai National Park also makes for great sightseeing program, if you are interested in nature and have time to spare.

Khao Yai National Park -Travelers from Isan (Northeast), Bangkok, and beyond often visit the national park. The fee is THB 400 for foreigners (THB 200 for children), and THB 40 for Thais or Thai residents, plus THB 50. Food is available from private concessions within the park as are bicycles. Kayaking and rafting services are also available. You can also enjoy "wildlife spotting" – an evening activity -- available via pick-up trucks in the early evening. Sightings are usually limited to deer and civet cats, but sometimes elephants too. There are also slideshow presentations at the visitor center on weekends and public holidays (10 a.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m.) and meeting rooms are available for seminars and workshops. For those who are so-inclined, there are camping zones in the area

too. You can bring your own tent or rent one at the camping ground, and lodges and cabins are available for singles and groups. There are over 50km of hiking trails – some take just one-hour to do, others take three days. For animal watchers, the observation towers at Nong Pak Chee or Mo Sing offer an opportunity to see Great Hornbills, gaur, and sometimes elephants (in the early morning). Gibbons are common too, and at 5:30 p.m. thousands of wrinkled lipped bats emerge from a cave 3km outside the northern gate for their dinner. Paleontologist “wannabes” might be interested to see dinosaur’s footprints at the Klong Pa KangWang Haew (but you may need a four-day trek to see a dinosaur footprint!). And of course, the waterfalls: Haew Narok, Haew Suwat, Haew Sai and Haew Pratoon – for that something exhilarating in your trip.

TRAVEL TIPS BANGKOK BASICS

WAYS TO COPE WITH BANGKOK CABBIES Traveling around Bangkok can be a challenge, so here are some tips on using taxis without being "taken for a ride” by Christopher Scott Dixon

N

ext to the BTS and MRT rapid transport systems, the best and most convenient way to see Bangkok is by taxi. You literally can’t miss them as they are always visible on the roads in a rainbow parade of funky colors such as bright pink and orange.

Chances are if you are standing on a main street, staring in hope at the traffic, the taxis will see you first and honk. But if you are trying to flag one down, watch for the glowing red vacant sign in the front. They are usually readily available as you might expect in a city that never seems to sleep, but a word of warning: be prepared for a lengthy wait when it rains and also in rush hour. Most taxis are new, spacious, air conditioned, and also metered so no need to negotiate. The fare starts at THB 35 for the first two kilometers. If they are not metered and the driver starts to insist on a fixed fare, then simply get out and wait for another one.

34

LOOKEAST | TRAVEL

Very few taxi drivers speak English and those that do have only limited knowledge, so I recommend that you try to learn a few Thai phrases, such as “stop,” “here,” “turn left,” or “turn right,” etc. Don’t expect the drivers to know every backstreet of the city. Keep a copy of your hotel card with you so you can show to the taxi driver if understanding becomes a problem. Or, have the staff write out directions in Thai. Also, carry a map and have the name and location of the place you want to go to. The drivers have their license plate details and names displayed in the taxi, and it’s worth noting them down, just in case anything goes wrong. You might find drivers who just don’t want to take you to your destination. Avoid any arguments, just get out, and wait for another taxi.

Do keep an eye on your belongings in the cab; it’s all too easy to be staring at the many fascinating sights on the street and forget your lap top, bags, or, mobile when you exit the vehicle in the rush to get back into your hotel or visit the enticing shopping malls. Be careful also when you open the cab door, always look behind you first, in case there is a motorcyclist; to avoid an accident that can seriously injure them by slamming into the door and damaging the taxi. Tipping is not expected, but it’s usual to roundup the final fare by THB 5 or THB 10 -- a very friendly gesture. Keep some of this advice in mind to sit back and enjoy the ride! Avoid the chaos all together with some amazing apps such as GrabTaxi, GrabBike, AllThaiTaxi or Uber.

ENCOUNTERS OF THE APE KIND

“P

lease hold still and don’t move,” says our guide Ricky, an Indonesian Rastafarian with dense knots of hair reaching down to his lower back. We are deep into Gunung Leuser National Park’s thicket, home of semi-wild orangutans, and the cause of his concern. “It’s fine… it’s not hurting me.” My girlfriend, who stepped a bit too close for the sake of a pictureperfect moment, is crouching next to an orangutan twice her size. The primate hovers at mid-air, three limbs clutched onto a web of rattan lianas, its right hand clasped around my girl’s left thigh. “It will let go soon…,” Ricky’s voice sounds as calm as the surface of a swimming pool on closing day, but we can all surmise that he’s hoping for this to end without a fractured femur. Seconds run slowly until the bemused monkey lets go of her, lifts up its arm, and disappears into the vegetation. Please don’t tell me, for I know very well. It’s idiotic to get that close to orangutans in the wild. But I will defend myself by saying that besides Bukit Lawang, there are very few other places in the world where one can truly “get in touch” with semiwild men of the forest. Situated 86km northeast of busy Medan, Bukit Lawang has been home to the Swissmanaged, WWF-funded, Bohorok Rehabilitation Center since 1973. Foreign funding stopped in 1980 when the Indonesian government took over, and by 1996, the center stopped admitting orangutans because it no longer met the standards of species re-introduction.

A flood tore the village apart on Nov. 2, 2003. Today, the village is a stitched-up collection of thatched huts and concrete guesthouses lined along the bends of the Bohorok River. We came all this way to see the orangutans avoiding an artificial experience from a feeding platform. We didn’t wait long before Ricky approached us with a broad smile and an utterly honest, irresistible pick-up line: “Please give me some business, or I’ll have to slave off another day at the rubber plantation.” The next morning, together with two other guides and four other travelers, we walked through a rubber estate and deep into the jungle. Less than two hours later we made our first encounter: perched in the midst of lianas, our first orange-colored man didn’t panic as we surrounded it. But when it swung down the canopy and reached out for my girlfriend’s leg, we all did, as we realized that we were just vulnerable guests in ape world. That feeling intensified when, minutes after the monkey let go of my girl, the thicket ahead of us started rumbling again. Ricky held us back, intimating to freeze and let them handle the situation. “It’s Mina. She’s recently delivered her baby,” he explained, “and she’s a bit grumpy.” He barely had the time to finish talking when a big orangutan emerged from the viridian background, a thunder rumbling inside its wide chest. Clinging under its armpit, a baby ape scanned the scene with awkward curiosity. The ape retired only when Ricky handed out a bunch of fruit as passage token, leaving us free to move forward. By the time we reached our campsite next to the riverbed, we had discovered that besides orangutans, the jungle wriggled with black gibbons, black leaf monkeys, and a few deadly emerald-colored snakes. The final surprise came in early next morning, when we realized that someone was scavenging around our campfire’s remains. My surprise turned into laughter when I saw a smaller orangutan pour liquid from a condensed-milk can directly into its mouth. It looked exactly like a human

sipping the last drops from a cup. “You are very lucky today… this is Jackie,” explained Ricky. Like two friends who haven’t hang-out in a while, man and beast locked gazes until the latter dropped her makeshift cup and came closer to us. Jackie seemed more amused by men than our breakfast, inching forward with timid eyes fixed on the ground between us as if it were silently asking to be allowed to sit among us humans. Jackie was so tame we could stand next to her for pictures. It stood placid, with a serene calm in her eyes. That’s the last jungle memory I have before I jumped into an inflated tube and slid downriver to Bukit Lawang. "Come back again soon," Ricky said as he collected the tubes, put them on a canoe, and prepared to tackle an upriver trip. As the sputter of his boat's engine faded behind the farthest river bend, I wondered if his next batch of tourists would be as lucky as us, or if such awe-inspiring encounters are all part of the business deal between humans and men of the jungle.

...besides Bukit Lawang, there are very few other places in the world where one can truly “get in touch” with semi-wild men of the forest.

It is a job he finds challenging for many reasons. “The asita eco-resort (lowercase intended) has trained me to become more useful, more multi-skilled, and more efficient in many areas of hotel operations,” he recently told Lookeast. “For example, I look after the green areas around the resort when the resort is not busy, but during periods of high occupancy, I get to help in the front office. I welcome guests, I carry their luggage, I escort them to their rooms, I support the Housekeeping Department at times, and I even get to help the banqueting team set up a function room when necessary.” Others might think his responsibilities as otherwise humble, but Sophon says he genuinely enjoys what he’s doing. “I like being able to help others, and looking after the needs of our guests,” he says. “I also enjoy being part of a team that

It’s embarrassing but at least I made the guests laugh.” Needless to say, Sophon gets to give asita eco-resort guests tips and recommendations on what they want and need, including: Where to go for the best Thai restaurant – I usually recommend the best seafood restaurant near the resort, in Samut Songkran, very close to the mouth of the ocean. But our resort also serves great tasting, fresh, healthy food! Where to bring their friends for a chill-out -- Of course, the Amphawa Floating Market Where to go for shopping -- There is

no high-end shopping here, only a local market but most tourists enjoy that. There is something unique in shopping at a market along the train tracks, by the Mae Klong River, or the Damnoen Saduak and Amphawa floating markets. What’s the easiest way to get back and forth the hotel -- asita eco-resort is located near Rama 2 main road and it’s only 65km from Bangkok (approximately one hour). There is a short cut for only 10 minutes leading to Amphawa Floating market and surrounded by many tourist attractions in this town. Best way to enjoy their holiday -- Eat like local, shop like local and enjoy the local culture. “Knowing that we have made our guest happy is enough reward for all of us,” he concludes. “Really, a mere ‘thank you’ would be enough to make my day. I love this job, I love my work place, and my colleagues, and we are like a one big happy family here.”

My favorite place: Chiang Rai Bring there: Guidebook, camera, and your best shoes for all-day walking Must-do: Rent a car and drive to see the views of nature along the way. Must-see: Doi Tung (Mae Fah Laung Foundation), Wat Rong Khun by famous Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, the Choui Fong Tea Plantation, and Boonrawd Farm (Singha Park) Must-buy: I love rose tea and always buy this tea when I am in the area because it is original, organic, and comes directly from the manufacturer. Also buy some tribal handicrafts at the night market. Eat at: Rai Saeng Arun -- they use a lot of fresh organic vegetables here, which comes from their own organic farm inside resort. Drink at: Green tea frappe and green tea roll at Choui Fong Shop -- they’re tasty! Sleep at: Rai Saeng Arun near the Klong River opposite Laos. This resort was inspired by the agricultural and resort tourism concept and is thus perfect for a green, healthy stay. You will enjoy the view of the large open field from sunrise to sunset!

My favorite place: I’ve been working and living in many countries, and especially so with The Ascott Ltd., which is a large international serviced residence owner-operator with more than 250 properties in over 90 cities in more than 25 countries. But, Thailand is my favorite place to stay. There are plenty of things to discover, to learn, to try and to enjoy here. As much as I love spending my time exploring the big, bustling Bangkok, I also love to travel to the Eastern Seaboard areas, such as the seaside city of Sri Racha for a weekend getaway. 'ME-HOUR' MOMENTS A newly opened luxury boutique hotel, The Monttra Pattaya skillfully combines luxury, pleasure, and personal service with simplicity and a true beach experience

O

n a fine weekend, one can often yearn for a “magical” getaway experience. How about Pattaya? Do I see eyebrows rising and faces smirking? Couldn’t believe it myself, but here I am in Pattaya, and it looks like I’m debunking my own cynicism. “We’re now at The Monttra,” I hear the driver speak, finally after two hours from Bangkok, as the car was entering a non-descript gate right next to the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Pratamnak Hill. “You are in for a cozy retreat to balance your hectic everyday life where all the most

by Percy Roxas highly-prized assets of our world are to be found: nature, time, tranquility, and self-reflection,” he says. Really? In Pattaya? And at once the well-preserved tree canopy that welcomed me as I alighted from the car immediately released an exhilarating feeling. Am I really in Pattaya? For, beyond the glare and glitz of everything we associate with Pattaya, The Monttra seems like a peaceful, quiet refuge – the kind that one finds in Chang, Samet and the Kood islands, or somewhere in Phuket, Krabi, or Koh Samui. The Monttra Pattaya (398

Moo 12 Rajchawaroon Rd // Tel: 038 306 333; Email: rsvn@ themonttra.com) is one of the newest hotels in Pattaya. Situated in what was once an exclusive residential enclave, hidden amid a verdant section of the Royal Varuna complex and edging a narrow seaside cliff and a private beachfront, it was said to be the first foray into the hotel business for a wealthy Pattaya family who have been long associated with Pratamnak Hill. In a way, it was designed to be a kind of hotel that the owners themselves would love to stay in. My room was called a Sea Breeze

Suite, one of the three located right behind the edge of a cliff that provides panoramic views of Koh Larn. Perfect for a “me-hour,” says my guide, and I nod as I surveyed the 53sqmrefuge. Like all 23 suites in this newly-opened luxury boutique hotel, mine was designed with a minimalist contemporary approach and an open space concept complemented with Thai accents that represented pure luxury and style. More than this, The Monttra cooks up some service offerings that are unique and never before seen in Asia. I mean, a “Soap Concierge” and a “Skin Supervisor”? And that’s just two of the many innovative services offered here. I thought just waking up to the dazzling sea views and beginning my day with a healthy breakfast in my own private garden would suffice. But the surprises just kept on coming: other services are provided on a complimentary basis on a rotating weekly program, such

as “Monk Blessings,” “Kitchen Fun,” “Spine Fitness,” and more – in case you want a break from your exclusive privacy. On my second day at The Monttra, I thought I should explore the premises so I began my day with a hearty breakfast at the Canopy Restaurant - a Thai restaurant that serves traditional dishes in a refined way. I already tried the in-room dining the night before, and because I was alone, I did forego the tempting option of a dinner on a seaside cave deck. The Canopy is a well-placed restaurant, to say the least, and one can sit here all day, watching other guests enjoy themselves at the sole swimming pool, sip some creative cocktails, do some work, or catch a sunset later in the day. But the highlight of my stay was probably a jaunt to the Jungle Gazebo, where I enjoyed my complimentary 20-minute massage, which is given to every guest as a welcome gift.

The massage is so good; I ended up extending my treatment to two hours! To sum it all up, I really wasn’t expecting anything as wonderful as this. Throughout my stay, I was consciously waiting for a glitch, a slip, a goof - somewhere, somehow: but thankfully I wasn’t able to find any. And to think that the hotel was still on a test run during my visit! As if by “magic” – the meaning of the word “monttra,” as I was to learn later – I was able to enjoy a weekend in Pattaya that only reaffirmed my belief in the wonders of Thai hotels, wherever they are located. Indeed, this one skillfully combines luxury, pleasure, and personal service with simplicity and a genuine beach experience. As I cozied up under the soft white linen covers in my bed that night, I couldn’t help but feel a tinge of regret that I was leaving The Monttra so soon. Perhaps I could extend my stay for one more day?

Like all 23 suites in this newlyopened luxury boutique hotel, mine was designed with a minimalist contemporary approach and an open space concept complemented with Thai accents that represented pure luxury and style.

LIFESTYLE PERSONALITY

CONNECTING BELMOND Former Bangkok expat Maria Kuhn is expected to help Belmond Ltd. expand its global brand presence and further its communications strategy across all markets

I

n August 2015, London-based Belmond Ltd. appointed Maria Kuhn as Corporate Director of Communications. If her name rings a bell, that’s because Maria has previously lived in the Thai capital for six years during her tenure with Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. Maria was in Bangkok recently as part of her present role with Belmond. Belmond, of course, needs no introduction. The company owns and operates 46 hotels and rail and river cruises operations around the world, including the Belmond Grand Hotel Europe in St. Petersburg; Belmond Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro; Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa in Riviera Maya; and Belmond El Encanto in Santa Barbara. Belmond also encompasses three safaris, six luxury tourist trains including the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, three river cruises, and the New York restaurant ‘21’ Club. In fact, many discerning travelers already know Belmond as the ultimate travel curator and connoisseur that creates exceptional experiences worldwide. But as they say, changing times require changing strategies. Maria’s appointment comes at the heels of a “rebrand” for Belmond that started in 2014. Her main job: to develop Belmond’s global communications strategy, to guide and supervise the company’s global PR team, and to build Belmond’s reputation worldwide. “The main purpose of this trip is to further promote the Belmond name so that people connect our products more instinctively,” Maria says.“Belmond’s global collection is established in some of the world’s most unique destinations, and while each property is known individually for the distinctive experiences they offer and provide, there was no common denominator that told the public they are all connected.” One example is the renowned

by Percy Roxas Belmond Hotel Cipriani in Venice, which marked Belmond’s first hotel acquisition 40 years ago, yet only few are aware that the property is part of the Belmond family. In fact, when Belmond underwent a rebranding last year incorporating the Belmond name to most of its properties worldwide – quite a few people thought the company was changing hands. “That is not true at all,” says Maria. “It’s the same company, there was no takeover in any way.” What the company is really doing, she adds, is similar to an umbrella -- putting the Belmond name on top of its properties to gather them all under one name. So if the public already know of the Belmond operations individually, how come very few really know they all belong to a joint brand? “How could they know if there was no common name before? And during the rebranding, Belmond has been taking a soft approach precisely because the public might think that there is a sort of company change, which is not the case,” she reiterates. With Maria, the company expects the perception to change soon. As one Belmond executive was quoted saying, "Maria’s specialized expertise will help us build our global brand presence and further our communications strategy across all markets." But Maria’s job does not only entail clarifying why the name Belmond is now being added to the names of most of its properties and how different Belmond is from other brands. Another main focus is Belmond’s further development. “In the future, we plan to enter into more management agreements, and for that, we need to be recognized as a brand. Our goal is to develop and promote the Belmond brand and bring all these properties together,” she says. How important is Bangkok in all these? Bangkok, Maria says, is a hub for Belmond, which has

hotel properties in Bali, Siem Reap, Luang Prabang, Yangon (Myanmar’s legendary Belmond Governor’s Residence, no less), and Koh Samui. But it’s not only that. “Asians -including Thais – travel a lot these days,” she explains. “We are in fact seeing more and more Thai travelers in Europe.” She cited how an entire Thai delegation recently stayed at Belmond Hotel Cipriani. “It was fun to teach our Italian general manager how to address them with “Khun” to make them feel more at home!” she shares. And Belmond is indeed unique because it combines hotel operations with train, cruises, and safaris. “With 46 products at present, Belmond is-comparatively speaking--a fairly small company. But, we own most of our properties,” Maria points out. “Not only that, Belmond does the opposite of what other brands are doing. We are going against the grain,” Maria says. For example, while other brands have 80 percent of their properties located in a city, the locations of Belmond properties are destinations by themselves." Maria’s successful career, which debuted in hospitality operations in Germany before moving into PR and communications, has seen her travel and work in many countries around the globe with Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts and Kempinski Hotels; she now seems to be in her best element again with Belmond. As Maria herself puts it, “I joined Belmond because I believe that it’s a unique and distinctive company, and truly offers what I really like about hotels and hospitality.” Now she didn’t say this, but that same passion for providing guests only the best during their Belmond holiday experience probably makes her job of promoting the company as the ultimate travel curator and connoisseur, relatively easier.

“Unforgettable holidays is really what Belmond is all about,” Maria says. “Seventy percent of our operations are hotels and all of our properties are unique, with many set in historic buildings such as monasteries and colonial style mansions and the like; thus ensuring a different experience.

LIFESTYLE LUXURY SHOPPING

RETAIL THERAPY The success and popularity of luxury retail malls in Bangkok shows no sign of diminishing, despite the rather gloomy financial forecasts by Christopher Scott Dixon

risis, what crisis? While the economic experts might be predicting a belt tightening 2016 in Thailand, judging by the numbers of people flocking to the capital’s shopping centers pre- and postfestive season, they are either simply ignoring the news, or indulging in retail therapy to forget the negative warnings. Thailand is Southeast Asia’s biggest luxury goods market. In 2014 alone it generated $2.5 billion in luxury sales higher than Indonesia and Malaysia. Luxury spending is also a key part of Thailand’s vast tourism industry, which accounts for a vital 20 percent of the country’s GDP.

Bangkok itself boasts more than 120 shopping malls, ranging from the boutique style to the mega complexes, which dominate not only the area around them but also the skyline above. The motto among the select band of developers appears to be "the more the better" as further malls are planned for the future. The statistics are impressive as there are still 1.1 million-sqm of retail space under construction in the city, which will see the final completed supply in 2017 close to an eye boggling eight million square meters. The Chao Praya riverside will have its new luxury-shopping complex next year when IconSiam opens. This will be a 500,000sqm

can become the "Dubai of the East." The booming Chinese tourism market and the start of the ASEAN Economic Community are also seen as key factors boosting the growth of the retail and especially the luxury end of the industry in the country. In addition, the anticipated growth in the overall tourism industry a trend, which began in 2015 and is expected to continue this year is another positive for retailers. What of the existing malls themselves? Each of the five has its own distinctive character and design and praise be for that. Generic is not always bad and is indeed sometimes necessary, but individuality is also much desired. Even the most cynical “seen-it-

retail and entertainment venue and will also comprise a 36,000sqm seven storey-high Takashimaya department store. This will be the first such outlet for the Japanese retailer in Thailand. Since I first arrived in the city in late 2004, the pace of change of the retail landscape of Bangkok has been nothing short of amazing. Back then there was no Siam Paragon, Terminal 21, Central Embassy, or EmQuartier, to name but a few and that is not even counting a host of boutique shopping centers, which also continue to flourish. If we focus on the upscale malls, then we can arguably discuss five: EmQuartier, The Emporium, Central Embassy, Siam

Paragon, and Gaysorn. They are strategically positioned in the Phrom Pong, Chidlom, Siam, and the central Ratchaprasong areas, all key commercial hubs and situated close to, or on the, BTS and MRT rapid transport systems. Rachaprasong also contains the Big C supermarket complex, and Central World, although they target different markets. The planners do their research carefully; they know that many of the local population are status-conscious and they like to look good and dress well. Despite its modern feel, Thailand in many respects is still a developing country and its inhabitants are anxious to attain the trappings of more advanced nations. The Emporium, the “first of the luxury malls, was established in 1997 at the height of another economic downturn but it has thrived. Thais, when compared to other nations, still do not travel overseas as much so top quality goods and lifestyle are offered to them at home. The top-grade retail sector is a curious union of volatility and stability. The tragic incident at the Erawan Shrine in Ratchaprasong last year created real concern for the immediate future of that particular location, and whether shoppers, both indigenous and from overseas, would studiously avoid it. However it seems to be thriving as usual, emphasizing how resilient the market is. Based on evidence, the highend consumer culture seems to be increasing in strength and presence because we are witnessing a rush of international brands such as jeweler Tiffany & Co and confectioner Pierre Herme for example. Both launched flagship stores in EmQuartier. Despite the fact that the prices of luxury goods might not be as competitive as in other destinations, one of many draws for tourists is the cheaper accommodation that Bangkok offers when compared to other cities such as Singapore and Hong Kong. The malls--in design, variety, comfort, products and facilities--are undoubtedly world-class, and many retail experts envision that Bangkok

all” shopper enters these glittering, multi-floored, colorful, pleasure palaces with widening eyes. Liveried staff, saluting, bowing, or opening doors for you. The tinkle of a jazz piano, or the smell of lemongrass from the exclusive spas, arouses the senses. The spectacular window displays persuade men and women, local and foreign, young and old, to reach for wallets and purses, eager to buy into, or continue, a desired lifestyle. Most if not all of the malls in focus have strong anchor brand stores such as Prada, Gucci, Chanel, Dior, etc., which not only solidify the particular venue’s reputation and attract visitors, but also act as a significant hook for other potential name brands to contemplate siting a branch there. Change is integral to how the malls function. There is always a need to freshen up displays, move products around and to try to keep one step ahead of your rivals. The older malls know they have to adapt and upgrade in the face of challenges from their younger competitors. You notice the small details as well as the extravagant gestures. The different sofas on the ground floor of Gaysorn from the last time you visited, or the startling and rainbow hued illuminations in Central Embassy and the emphasis on gold colors from shopping trolleys to wolf statues at the Emporium. One area where the luxury retailers are keen to expand is recreational activities for children. Youngsters are an interesting group,

as of course they are end consumers but are not usually the actual customers for example toys, they see and want the latest computer game or play station, but the parents do the purchasing. In terms of leisure, the opening of Kidzania at Siam Paragon several years ago was a trendsetter for children’s activities zones in shopping malls. The Emporium launched EmPlayground last year, an interactive playland separated into 19 different zones. Themed shopping events and heavy promotions are crucial in luring shoppers with time on their hands and disposable income. The range is diverse and includes visits from top sports stars, pet shows, food festivals, music events, and again-with children in mind--a number of workshops, which draw crowds and increase potential revenue. Midnight sales and seasonal sales, which seem to go on throughout the year with huge discounts, are also regular features of most of the malls and attract many people. It is about living, or at the very least sampling an opulent lifestyle, that is more lingering here than in the lower end stores where people go in, grab their groceries, and exit. Luxury is meant to be savored. You can bask in the glow from the Rolex watches, inhale exotic fragrances and gasp at the prices, or stare in disbelief at the cost of that tailored jacket in the window, smile and tilt your head in hope at your partner. Most of the malls not only have

themed events, but themed floors, for example, lifestyle and leisure, or fashion venue, which more easily shepherd potential customers to their target goods. Signage and information boards and desks abound and there is numerous staff to guide shoppers to the right level etc. The luxury segment of the market is just as competitive as the community malls and chains. While we may simply jot down appointments or family birthdays on a calendar, retailers view it month by month as a commercial journey. Christmas and New Year are barely a memory, with the trees and decorations only just taken down from outside the malls or in some examples, still there, before Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day are next on the retail agenda. The Chinese-Thai community is large, wealthy, and influential, and the malls mirror the hotels and restaurants in tactics as they roll out special Chinese New Year promotions. For 2016, these can be as diverse as large discounts on services and goods to free feng-shui advice for their customers. Valentine’s Day means not only love’s in the air, this is a huge income time for the malls, with an emphasis on confectionery, perfumes, jewelry and clothes purchases. No expense will be spared to tempt shoppers with more “great” deals and special offers; lots of heart and floral designs to woo the visitors. Next? Easter and Songkran - life in the luxury malls of Bangkok never stays still!

TRAVEL TRENDS FOR SAVVY ASIAN TRAVELERS

T

he year was marked by several external challenges to the tourism and travel industry in Asia Pacific, including the Southeast Asian haze, MERS in South Korea, a bomb blast in Bangkok, and of course the currency fluctuation that still grips countries such as Japan, Korea, and Australia. Even with all of the negative events of 2015, tourism in Asia Pacific continued to grow steadily, according to UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. Travelers are looking for fast, innovative and easy ways to use hotel-booking tools, says Hotels.com, which is constantly striving to become online destination for hotel bookings. The Top 10 Travel Trends in 2016: 1. Hotel Booking in Your Palm: Travel is inherently an on-the-go experience. Travelers can get everything they need through the devices in their hand. Hotels. com saw the demand for hotel bookings on mobile phones increasing rapidly. During the first nine months of 2015, more than one in three bookings on Hotels.com were made on smartphones. 2. Value-Added Services: Visa application discount, travel insurance, a Wi-Fi egg and a one-day local tour are some of the value-added services that travelers receive when booking rooms through Hotels.com – making it easier for them plan their trips in advance. It thinks these value-added services will continue to be attractive to customers in 2016. 3. Be the Hotel Expert: Savvy travelers are reading and writing reviews, and have become an integral part of the hotel booking process. With 17 million genuine guest reviews on the Hotels.com site, travelers can choose properties based on their ranking in categories such as convenience, service, comfort and cleanliness. Customers will get savvier about reviews in 2016 and value genuine reviews a lot more, Hotels.com says.

4. Make use of loyalty programs: Signing up for rewards programs is a great way to save on travel. A recent survey reveals that over 50 percent of respondents in Asia enrolled in loyalty programs valued free products, gift certificates or cash rebates. More than 20 million members of Hotels.com Rewards Program can redeem one free night after spending 10 nights in a hotel booked on its site. 5. On-the-go Itinerary: Travelers may not have enough time to make hotel room bookings in advance. Over 25 percent of travelers across the globe tend to book their trip with last minute deals at Hotels.com to enjoy the best hotel discounts in the first nine months of 2015. Again last minute travel will continue to grow in 2016. 6. Top Travel Destinations for 2016: Rio, Kuala Lumpur (KL), Hong Kong, and Bangkok: At a global level, Brazil is expected to be a favored destination as the biggest sporting event on the planet is going to Rio de Janeiro in August 2016 -- the Olympic Games. From an Asia perspective we think KL, Hong Kong, and Bangkok will continue to be big for travelers’ accommodation in hotels was markedly cheaper according to the latest Hotels.com Hotel Price Index™ (HPI™). For the first half of 2015, it showed that KL had a 13 percent decrease in room rates to THB 2,026 per night for Thai travelers. Hong Kong and Thailand, especially Bangkok, are still among the top destinations for travelers across Asia Pacific, according to the HPI.

7. “Bleisure” on the Rise: Business travel in Asia, in general, is on the rise. The Global Business Travel Association expects that by 2018, Asia Pacific will have gained another 5 percent in market share, while the U.S. and Western Europe will lose 3 percent and 2 percent respectively. Business travel is expected to continue to grow, along with the trend of more corporate travelers extending their business trips to add leisure travel with their families. 8. Millennial Matters: Millennials, a generation who is more affluent, savvier with technology and more socially connected than any other generation past. This segment of travelers will continue to become bigger and more important. Driven by income growth, the Asian Millennials spend on international travel is expected to increase by 1.6 times to US$340 billion1 by 2020. 9. Increase in Travel Spending: Many destinations benefitted from more favorable exchange rates, while others became more expensive, but saw their purchasing power abroad increase. According to the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, China continued to report double-digit growth in outbound travel, benefitting Japan, Thailand, the U.S., and various European destinations. India, reported double-digit growth in tourism expenditure. 10. Personalized Travel Experiences: Travelers are using every tool out there to customize their journeys. For example, at Hotels.com, they are delivering practical tools through the mobile app, which will further enhance the traveler’s hotel stay. This includes adding local services such as transportation options, providing walking or driving directions, ways to purchase events tickets and tools for sharing personal experiences, such as pictures and real time reviews.

BUSINESS TRAVEL TECHNOLOGY

RISE OF THE DIGITAL CONCIERGE Is the omnipresent digital “smart” phone about to relegate the concierge desk to the ever-increasing scrap heap of “the way we used to do things?” Probably not completely but rather than talking directly with a concierge, many tech savvy guests now access a computer program housed on their mobile phones as a way of communicating with a concierge or the front desk. by Michael Moore 54

any hostelries, ranging from budget places to five-star establishments, currently have mobile applications that allow guests to do basic things like make reservations and checkin and check-out. But as the world becomes more comfortable with smart phones, innovative establishments have developed applications that vastly increase the scope of what can be done using a mobile application. For budget places, it is a winwin situation. Customers can get additional services and the hostelry can provide them without adding staff and costly infrastructure. Aaron Stenhoff, vice president of marketing and digital at Red Roof Inn, recently put it this way, “Technology allows us to distribute our content, while enhancing guest services.” For luxury establishments, the competition to jump on the high-tech bandwagon is more intense and what is offered by digital applications is far wider. According to Bjorn Hanson, divisional dean of the Preston Robert Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism and Sports Management at New York University, digital concierge services allow hotels “to differentiate themselves, to add a service that usually ranks among the highest for guest satisfaction and to achieve higher rates.” Conrad was the first major branding to jump into the digital fray, and it did so in a big way. Harald Feurstein, formerly GM at the Conrad Bangkok and now GM in Manila, is enthusiastic about the Conrad mobile app that can be downloaded onto smartphone or tablets. “It completely changes the way people experience a hotel,” he says. “In addition to being able to reserve a room, you can do an amazing number of things to personalize your stay. Basically, it provides a way for you to customize the details of your stay before and during your visit. You can, for example, use it to arrange for your favorite beer to be in the refrigerator before you arrive at the hotel. You can also make reservations in dining rooms, at our spas or arrange for airport transportation.” “We can even geotag you once

you make a reservation through the concierge,” he continues. “This will let us know when you have arrived at the airport, enabling us to check you in so that you can go directly to your room when you arrive at the hotel Once you are at the hotel, you can use the program to do things like arrange for your breakfast to arrive in your room when you finish your morning run or reserve a table at one of the hotel's restaurants for a last minute business meeting.” Mobile Request is Marriott Hotels’ latest venture into the digital concierge arena. The app is available to the 50 million members of Marriott Rewards, the company’s loyalty program. A highlight of the program is the “Anything Else?” feature that provides guests with a chat functionality that permits them to talk in real time with staff at the hotel about their specific needs. Most other major hotels have some sort of digital concierge program, including Hyatt, Intercontinental, Wynddham, Aloft, and many independent hotels. The functionality has become so popular that several companies have created digital apps that can be purchased by hotels; a sure sign the digital concierge is here to stay. A potential problem with allowing guests to request hotel services through their mobile phones is execution. Henry Harteveld of Forrester Research points to numerous complaints about services not being updated or actually available. There must be coordination and overall planning between what is digitally advertised and what the hotel is actually capable of doing. Okay, so the digital concierge has arrived. Does this mean that helpful individual behind the concierge desk is going to disappear? Harteveld says emphatically not, “Nothing will ever replace a face-to-face concierge. A guest visiting a city for the first time will have a lot of questions and will need to have interaction with a concierge.” This view is enthusiastically seconded by Feurstein. “Although computers and the Internet have changed the way we do business,” he says, “we still need personal contact."

LIFESTYLE DOING BUSINESS IN THAILAND

HOW TO DO BUSINESS IN THAILAND Because starting a business in the kingdom presents another set of challenges for the foreigner, here are some helpful tips

powerfully seductive not only for the thousands of tourists who flock to Thailand’s sun-kissed shores but also for those who are aiming to put down more substantial roots. Be careful, however, as without researching and receiving the correct advice, it can be like walking blindfold through an administrative and

bureaucratic minefield and that’s not even taking into account the cultural and language differences! Despite the above reservations, once armed with the correct guidance, starting a business is actually not as difficult as you might think. The country is extremely capitalistic and is very receptive

to both foreign companies and investment. There is potential here to develop an idea, but it is important to focus on a number of key areas. 1. Have a solid idea and workable business plan. 2. Have enough supply funding to begin your business. 3. You must have a willingness to comprehend the Thai business mindset, culture, possess an open mind, and have lots of patience. Those used to the more rapid and direct Western approach to commercial matters and decision making may have to bite their tongues and count to 100 at the way things are conducted here. Business organizations in Thailand can be classified into partnerships, companies, or sole proprietorships. Other categories include a branch office, representative office, or a regional operating headquarters. For foreigners, there are two main ways to start a business in Thailand. Either in partnership with a Thai citizen -- but because of the complex nature of labor and immigration laws, the alien, which means the foreigner is not permitted to participate in the daily running of the business. A local partner is required to front the operation – or as an alternative, you can form a limited company. A word of warning: Foreign shareholders are only allowed a maximum of 49 percent, so the owner might, on occasions, be outvoted by the 51 percent majority Thai shareholders. There is also a need to employ a minimum number of Thai staff per foreign employee. Adhering to the rules of the country before embarking on the process of establishing a business is vital too. The Alien Occupation Law requires all foreigners working in Thailand to obtain a Work Permit

prior to starting work in the kingdom. There is an exception when they are applying under the Investment Promotion Law, in which case they 30 days to apply. In terms of a visa, non-immigrant visas give the holder eligibility to make an application for a work permit. In the interim period while the work permit application is being considered, the holder is allowed to work. It is interesting to note that the Thai legal system with regard to tax and company matters is quite significantly styled after the USA and a number of European countries including France and Switzerland. As a result, most foreigners do actually find it business founding procedures relatively undemanding and easy to work with. Again though, this is when you have quality and expert advice to take you every step of the way. There is much assistance available both at national and private level. The Board of Investment (BOI), based on Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road in the Chatuchak area of Bangkok, offers a raft of services and advice for would be entrepreneurs both local and from overseas. This includes site visits, identifying potential suppliers, subcontractors and joint-venture partners. It also helps to coordinate between the foreign business community and other public agencies (www.boi.go.th/index. php?page=index&language=en). With the advent of ASEAN and the freedom of movement that community heralds and the burgeoning economies of neighboring Vietnam and Cambodia, which are keen to attract foreign investment, the Thai government is anxious to increase the speed and simplicity at which businesses can be set up here. The country’s global ranking as to the ease of doing business fell three places last year to 49th, this was due mainly to lower marks for business start-ups and obtaining credit according to the World Bank’s latest report.

The figures show that it takes 27-and-a half days to establish a business in Thailand compared with a world average of less than 20 days. The country ranks 96th for starting a business, declining sharply from 2014’s 75th position. Climbing back up the table for the stress-reduced process of conducting business is one of the government’s top priorities for 2016 and beyond. There is a recognition too of the shift in Thailand’s economic growth model from export driven toward a more investment-fueled economy. Knowing just how to invest your money requires not only sound guidance but also trust in what are critical life decisions. Harvey Law Group (HLG) (www. harveylawcorporation.com/) is one of the top law firms, not only in Thailand but globally. It was founded in Canada in 1992. HLG’s focus is in two main areas, pure legal services including employment, company incorporation and commercial law and a category it has been specializing in since 1992-Investment Immigration or mobility. This in essence means that as a return for investing a particular amount of money into a country’s economy. The investor gains the right to permanent residency, to reside, or citizenship in that country. Integral to HLG’s reputation for sustained quality and wise advice is the core strength of personal interactions with clients from start to completion of whatever process it may be. A number of other firms provide expert help and a range of services including Siam Legal Group (www.siam-legal.com/Businessin-Thailand/business-in-thailand. php) and Allan & Overy (www. allenovery.com/locations/asiapacific/thailand/en-gb/Pages/ default.aspx). A good business plan, enough finance, talk to the right people, and Thailand can truly be the ‘Land of Smiles’ for you!

WINE&DINE RESTAURANTS

TALENT FOR TASTE A continuing commitment to top quality dining, great service, and originality are the hallmarks of Enoteca Italiana by Christopher Scott Dixon

ozily located in an inner alley of Sukhumvit Soi 27 in Bangkok, Enoteca is only a short walk away from the bustling city but is a soothing sanctuary, which feels like stepping into a different world. Enter what is almost a magical garden: see the lights glowing like fireflies from the beautifully renovated house, amble up the stone path, let your eyes take in the leafy setting with the perfectly manicured lawn, and the noise and congestion of the capital are already a memory. Four tall arched windows that stretch from polished floor to ceiling greet you as you cross the threshold. The door is opened by one of the smartly attired staff and the warm

smiles create an instant positive impression. Soft jazz music is a partner, rather than an intruder as you settle into wicker chairs at candle lit polished mahogany tables. You can observe the tall wines shelves, which have over 400 exclusively Italian labels, including a Barolo collection together with rare vintage wines. Look at the curved brick counter laden with Italian cheeses, smoked hams and salamis and gaze at the garlands of garlic and onion that hang like edible chandeliers from the ceiling. There is yet more to excite your eyes -- like the eclectic collection of memorabilia and advertising signs that adorn the walls.

This is the main dining room but there is also a larger area at the rear of the restaurant, which is ideal for parties, groups, and special functions. Unlike a number of other establishments, the ambience is inviting, intimate, and yet convivial and natural. Nothing is forced. It all seems effortless, although of course that in itself is a skill, like a duck swimming; the energy is not always visible, but the results are. Enoteca literally translates as “wine library.” Since its opening in 2004, Enoteca has progressed from the original concept of simple food and wines to its present mission of providing excellent gourmet dining with innovative twists on Italian cuisine. It comes as no surprise that Enoteca has received many awards over the years. It has been rated not only one of the top 10 eateries in Bangkok but also has garnered plaudits as runner-up restaurant of the year in Asia and Australasia. Bologna born Nicola (Nic) Bonazza is the effervescent owner/ manager and in tandem with his

supremely talented chef, Stefano Merlo, they create a gastronomic must-see and -taste experience. A former financial adviser, Nic’s culinary path has not been the traditional cooking pasta at his mother’s side in Italy. Sensing economic change in his native land in the early 2000s, Nic decided to leave the stocks and shares behind and move to Bangkok. He is a keen student and has spent much time researching the varied techniques and methods of many chefs and imparting his knowledge and views on food to his staff and his colleague Chef Merlo. He explains his philosophy: “My idea is not to do the classic Italian style as many already do this and it’s always the same story. I want to try something new, I know it can be a harder path to follow--as people’s expectations are--especially outside Italy, for restaurants with Italian menus to offer classic pizza and pasta dishes. I must add there’s nothing wrong at all with that, but it’s just not our way.” Nic’s and Chef Merlo’s shared passions are very evident as is their constant striving to seek new inspirations for Enoteca’s always fascinating and unpredictable menu. The cornerstones are simplicity, creativity and diversity, but never compromising on taste. True to their words Nic and Stefano delivered another splendidly inventive and unique menu for a sample visit. A playful and flavorsome mix of gazpacho, a spoonful of truffle ice cream, deep-fried rigatoni and

burato followed a tasty starter of pork and chicken skins and rice cracker. Delicious smoked mackerel with fried seaweed and mayo accompaniment was next. Christmas might be over, but a traditional Italian festive dish, “Cotechino,” was showcased and very interestingly! Take the top off a large onion, and inside there was a cream of potatoes with diced sausages -wonderful to the palate! As Nic met more regular guests like returning friends at the door, a superb tortellini with mascarpone, tomato paste, pork cheek and vanilla oil was devoured. Pigeon foie gras with cabbage and chick pea sauce was another fantastic moreish combination. A gorgeous chocolate fondant dessert with 70 percent dark chocolate and a side of praline ice cream completed another breathtaking gastronomic evening. Enoteca Italiana -- enchanting ambience, with a menu that fuses modern, traditional, genuinely innovative and peerless quality dishes, always memorable!

Since its opening, Enoteca has progressed from the original concept of simple food and wines to its present mission of providing excellent gourmet dining with innovative twists on Italian cuisine.

SPICE IT UP IN THE NAME OF LOVE Two new Bangkok restaurants to add to your list of places to discover! by Rich Kantita

Warm Wood Café

MEATLICIOUS

WARM WOOD CAFÉ

(137/1 Soi Thonglor 10, 02-714-9974)

This all day brunch café is as hot as its name. While the classics are playing in the background, the delicious barbequed pulled pork and eggs benedict pancakes are served with a great selection of cocktails and beers. The Warm Wood Café sets the mood that is expected from its name. A soothing, friendly, and relaxing ambience allows customers to feel immediately at ease, and is the perfect location to bring your significant other on a sunny afternoon date. As the night arrives, the café slowly switches into a bar with deep house music playing to welcome the night owls. With their concept - “from our warm heart and crafty hands” dates can enjoy sharing the deliciously crafted desserts. We recommend the Pavlova meringue with a soft middle and a crusty outer layer. This relaxing café sits in the busy nightlife area of Thonglor Road and just across from the more vibrant Wine Republic. It is the place to be for good conversations in a warm and extremely comfortable atmosphere. Good beer and refreshing cocktails on the menu definitely gives a fun twist to this otherwise calm café.

LOOKEAST | WINE & DINE

(8 Ekkamai Soi 6, 091-698-6688)

Cozy and homey, this restaurant sits just a few steps away from the busy road. From beginning to end, the owner, chefs, and staff welcome guests in the friendliest manner. Quickly, the tasteful journey begins with appetizers with a foie gras breakfast and tuna ceviche that will surely quell your appetite. Menus may change throughout the months, thanks to the creative mind of one of “Asia’s 50 Best Chefs,” Gaggan Anand, but the recommended ones are here to stay, says the owner. Argentine Chimichurri is one that cannot be missed. We recommend medium rare for the real Meatlicious experience. Each bite is soft and juicy, and is accompanied with a herby sauce and grilled vegetables on the side. Another great beef selection that is recommended and should be booked ahead of time is the Japanese top quality beef, Miyazaki. The best beef grade is measured by the level of marble with A5 quality beef being the best, and therefore, the hardest to find. Other main dishes include scallops in truffle sauce, Tomahawk, porridge, and desserts such as burnt ice cream. Living up to its name, Meatilicious has a friendly, vibrant, and active open kitchen that sets a lively tone to the place. Definitely a place to visit but be sure to make a reservation as walk-ins rarely find seats at the restaurant. Couples can find a good table to sit and chat at, and the commotion of the kitchen on the background will hopefully help to break the ice for those on an awkward first date. Singles should book a seat at the bar close to the kitchen to watch the chefs in action while sipping a beer. “Burnt. Beer. Burp.” is their motto and that is exactly what you should expect.

Meatlicious

T

he romantic season is a great time to spice things up with your significant other and discover new things together. For those who are single and ready to mingle, you are in luck because Bangkok has an endless list of things to enjoy and its restaurants are among the best venues in which to enjoy Valentine’s Day. There are a lot of new restaurants, bars, and cafés dispersed around the city, so we hit up the most talked about spots to check-in and take a tasty journey with a little bit of added buzz.

WINE&DINE RESTAURANTS

SUSHI, ON THE ROCKS Experience Japan in Bangkok with zuma's tasty new Baikingu Brunch that is now available every first Sunday of the month

R

ight at the heart of the city, zuma (lower case intended) is located by the St. Regis Hotel (159 Rajadamri Rd; BTS: Rajadamri; Tel: 02 2252 4707). We welcome its famous "Sunday Baikingu Brunch" that has taken influences from its sister Hong Kong branch and is now available every first Sunday of the month in Bangkok. Although the brunch promotion has only been available for a month, it has proved extremely popular and the list of food on the menu features an amazing set of dishes to indulge in. The restaurant, designed by Noriyoshi Muramatsu, who took inspiration from the four elements of earth, fire, water and air, has created a very cozy and comfy feel with a cavelike appearance made up of big stones and heavy materials. Available at THB 1,900++ per person (THB 2,950++ with a beverages package), the brunch buffet is expansive and if there's anything you should know about

by Rich Kantita Japanese food, it’s that you shouldn’t let the sizes fool you. The small bites may look like they will leave you unfulfilled, but I promise you that won't happen. The feast usually starts with soup/edamame/steamed rice, a selection of nigiri and maki, and a sashimi platter and tempura, served directly to your table. The buffet includes everything from sushi, sashimi, edamame and black cod to miso soup, a grilled section, a salad bar and more. Japanese food lovers will surely be satisfied with everything zuma delivers. The variety of food at the bar may leave you somewhat confused but worry not; the staff here are willing to guide you through choosing and trying everything. There’s no reason not to try every dish, especially the big fresh oysters that are simply mouthwatering, the fresh fish cheeks, the succulent ribs and more. The drinks menu itself is worth a special mention. The signature cocktails are light enough for an

afternoon drink, but there is also a comprehensive wine selection from the cellar holding over 2,000 bottles, as well as house sake for a genuine Japanese experience. Part of the extra beverages package are the mocktails and soft drinks if you're not feeling overly daring on a Sunday afternoon. End your sweet, tasteful journey with a full dessert platter consisting of fresh fruit, cake, and ice cream. And if that wasn’t enough, take the dining extravaganza to the garden section where you can enjoy an even more pleasurable meal with some fresh air and a sunny atmosphere.

The brunch buffet is reasonably priced, considering its wide variety and high quality.

WINE&DINE RESTAURANTS

SMOKE, ICE, AND EVERYTHING NICE More places to enjoy the famous classic drinks of whisky, wine, and beer are coming up as Whisgars line up more exciting projects by Rich Kantita

A

f t e r c elebrating their one-year anniversary last month, Whisgars has unveiled more exciting projects for food and cocktails enthusiasts. These include two new restaurants with offical openings yet to be announced. Now already with four branches--three in Bangkok and one in Samui--the Whisgars experience satisfies all from ladies with class, gentlemen with taste to hardcore drinkers looking for good

times. Separated bars are run by the same brand, each providing distinctive style and functionality. Whisgars itself is a Whisky and Cigar room where cocktails are served by a mixologist who is able to mix up drinks for your right kind of thirst. Smoking is allowed in the bar, but for some reasons, the smell does not exasperate non-smokers. Instead it reminds us of the good ol’ days of enjoying classic premium, handrolled cigar seated in well-furnished

All photos from Whisgars

leather couch. The temperature of the well-secluded cigar room handles cigar with care and one can buy and store their cigars at Whisgars to avoid quality damage in the transportation. CRAFT – Craft Beer Bar next to Whisgars makes drinking and finding quality beer less complicated than it used to be. Craft Beer offers more than enough quality beer through different sources of ingredients, flavors and percentage of alcohol from different well-known countries for beer products. Unlike the cozy, business savvy Whisgars bar, CRAFT bar is outdoorsy, relaxing, and warm, perfect for a beer garden setting. And after work, you can come and enjoy New York-style burgers, fries, and snacks. Located at the corner of the busy Surasak and Silom road, the view at

the bar is as exciting as watching your favorite nighttime series. Another fun nightlife experience is offered at Minus 13 Ice Lounge, which takes winter to this tropical land. Here, we suggest visitors to do some advance preparation as the ice bar is freezing cold at -13 Celsius. Although thick fur coats are provided, your knees and feet might not be. Warm up with a special shot promotion to warm your body and fight the temperature that promises to be a worthwhile experience, even if giving up on the cold seems reasonable. Also, you cannot miss sitting on the live-size ice “Tuk Tuk” and taking pictures with it. The latest project of Whisgars is a new restaurant, Kitchen 23. Still in its soft opening, it boasts menus featuring different cocktail, wine and

liquor pairings by a talented executive chef. Promotional nights at Whisgars is a full scheduled calendar every month. Activities that are enjoyable for all and special Monday and Thursday nights for the ladies – Lipstick Society and Little Black Dress. House DJs include a very international mixture from "The Voice Thailand" contestant, Petite, Yokohama native, Columbian, and more. A variety of options in finding the right style for your night out is available at Whisgars, ranging from an adventurous one to a completely chilling vibe. A birdie told me that there will be a New Yorker Steakhouse opening soon as well as Whisgars for overseas. 2016 is looking pretty good!

ith the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) now in effect, I think it’s a good idea to share with your readers some beautiful places in our neighboring country, Myanmar. I had a wonderful opportunity recently to visit my company’s branch in Yangon, Myanmar and I stayed for a couple of days. The office is just opposite Bogyoke Park, which is in the center of the city. Thus, after I finish work I would walk to the park to enjoy the sights, including the Karaweik Palace, which is especially fascinating at twilight.

But a must for every tourist is to visit the biggest pagoda in Myanmar, the Shwedagon Pagoda, also known as the Golden Pagoda (“shwe” means “gold” and “dagon” means “city” in the Burmese language). The pagoda, the most sacred Buddhist pagoda in Myanmar, is located west of Kandawgyi Lake and dominates the Yangon skyline. I would recommend a visit here in the evening time. Also, every Thai tourist must know about Bo Bo Gyi Nat (or "instantly wishes god"). Some Thais believe their wishes will become true if they make a visit here. There are

steps to follow if you do visit: firstly, you use two banknotes and fold them into a cone shape. Then put them in the god’s hand. After that, put your forehead at the god's finger and make a wish. Lastly, donate one cone-shape banknote to the shrine and take the other one home as your luck money! (By the way, don’t let others know what you wish for!) I also visited the Nga Htat Gyi Pagoda, also known as "the fivestorey Buddha," a 14m-high Buddha image with full accessorized with gold and jewelry. I walked up to the temple, which is around five minutes from the main road, and found this big beautiful Buddha. The Burmese faith in Buddhism really impressed me. One thing to remember: as in Thailand, you must take your shoes and socks off when visiting a temple or pagoda in Myanmar.
