EDITORIAL EDITOR'S NOTE
everything for everbody!
T
he last four months of 2016 begins with an exciting, frenetic tiptoe of September that tugs at, and delights, the heartstrings of local foodies. What do I mean? Quite simply, that we can expect to see a foodie-related frenzy around the kingdom as we have never seen in years, thanks to Thailand’s newfound niche as one of the world's newest gourmet capital. And aren’t we all glad that there’s so much happening related to this around. Thailand of course has always been attractive to foreigners because of its intense, richly flavorful food but now even more so as the kingdom has mde it possible for all kinds of palates and preferences to enjoy what they want here. “Everything for everybody,“ as the cliché goes, especially in the wine and dine sector -- and that makes Thailand an even more attractive travel destination these days. Firstly, Thai food – with its unique combinations and exotic ingredients -- has inspired many top international chefs to come and create innovative gastronomy that they bring home with much fervor and which helps spread interest worldwide. Secondly, the local food scene is so vibrant and dynamic that even chefs coming from the best gourmet capitals in the world welcome the chance to visit the country and showcase their award-winning culinary skills and expertise to the delight

of local tastebuds. Thirdly, the Food & Beverage industry is developing really big, ever-growing in fact, that there has been no let up not only in the opening of new restaurants and bars all over the country. And more snd more Michelin-star chefs are opening a branch or two of their world-renowned restaurants to cshowcase their award-winning, worldclass culinary expertise. Thus it seems only logical that we start the first quarter with a “Foodie Issue” – as we call it in local magazine lingo. We have devoted more pages than usual in this edition to the Wine & Dine section to reflect this theme. Our main “excuse” -- forgive the term -- is that we still have to allot enough pages to the other sections that our loyal readers have come to look for in Lookeast. Deliberately we have also devoted equally interesting feature pages, as well as sections for the latest holiday deals and promotions that we are sure all travel and lifestyle readers would enjoy. And by the way, don’t hesitate to send us your feedback. You can either do it by snail mail, or email, or by logging on to our website (www.lookeastmagazine. com) and social media channels (Facebook, instagram, et al) where we have recently included a survey form for you to fill in. So read on. Whether you are a real foodie freak or not, this issue is for you.
Here’s hoping that you will enjoy reading all of the articles in this issue as much as we have enjoyed putting them together for you. Enjoy your travels, wherever that takes you – and remember to be safe at all times! Sawasdee Krub!

ADVERTORIAL
WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT
‘KHON KAEN REVOLUTION’
K
New Vision
hon Kaen is not only best known as a “land of dinosaurs,” but also, as a fast growing province in terms of economy and business. More recently, the province has been receiving a lot of attention among tourism professionals and travelers, making the current campaign of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to promote Khon Kaen as a travel hub in 2017 very timely. Dubbed as “Khon Kaen Revolution,” the campaign aims to put the province among the leading hotspots of Thailand – an economic powerhouse and business magnet as well as a mustvisit travel destination with so much to offer. Think you are dummy about Khon Kaen? Here are some things you should know about the ‘new’ Khon Kaen:
In line with TAT’s implementation guidelines on how Khon Kaen become a new business hub, the people of Khon Kaen are developing a new vision in many areas that should prove profitable for the province in the long term. A MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) information center is scheduled to open next year, which will make Khon Kaen the top choice for conferences, events, and other functions; and with more infrastructure – including transport -- designed for further development, this vision should be a guiding light for a better, more prosperous, more attractive to visit and do-business Khon Kaen.
Why Go
New Business Network
Because Khon Kaen is nestled in a prime location on the northeast of Thailand, the province is ideally attractive as a business hub. With the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and the potential rewards of economic integration in a region promising a huge market with big opportunities for trade and business, Khon Kaen should prove an attractive new business network that could drive both the public and private sectors to come together, integrate, and create an evolution in domestic and international trade engagement.
New Knowledge
Khon Kaen is arguably the largest educational center in Isan and institutions such as Khon Kaen University, North-Eastern University, the Rajamangala Institute of Technology, College of Asian Scholars, Civil Aviation Training Center, Sripatum University, Sirindhorn College of Public Health, as well as the other international schools and bilingual schools offer countless opportunities for both education and research development. Khon Kaen, therefore, is a perfect
destination to start education and to further hone existing knowledge, skills and abilities that prepare an individual for a promising career and/or business success.
New Experiences
Khon Kaen is a “new Manhattan.” It is gearing up to be the next cultural and financial capital of Thailand. Visitors will enjoy first-hand experiences and immersion in both traditional and modern cultures for one. Furthermore, Isan food is probably one of the most popular cuisines ever. For example, sticky rice and somtam (a spicy papaya salad with fermented fish sauce), are top favorites of many both locals and foreigners. Being in Isan itself, Khon Kaen is well positioned to provide visitors a culinary experience that is authentic as they are truly delicious. Tourism-wise, many places in Khon Kaen have become well known and the TAT hopes to attract five million tourists by 2017. This is not impossible, considering the province’s many popular tourist attractions, such as Bung (Lake) Kaen Nakhon, Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon (The 9-storey stupa), Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum, Ubonrat Dam, Khon Kaen Zoo, Sim Isan, Wat Chai Si, and Khon Kaen University.
There are plenty of attractions to lure all kinds of visitors. Accessibility is convenient, with travel by planes, trains, and buses easily available and relatively inexpensive. Khon Kaen offers an opportunity to combine a business trip, a holiday sojourn, and a grand shopping spree. Indeed, Khon Kaen is the next big thing – whether for business or for pleasure!
How to go:
By Plane: There are 3 airlines that fly daily from Bangkok to Khon Kaen which are Thai Smile Airways, Air Asia and Nok Air. There is also a direct flight from Chiangmai to Khon Kaen, operating by Kan Air. By Train: Trains leave daily from Hua Lumphong Railway Station in Bangkok bound for Udon Thani and Nong Khai travel via Khon Kaen. For more information, call Tel. 1690 or www.railway.co.th By Bus: There are variety buses such as airconditioned coaches and 24-seat VIP coaches which leaves Bangkok’s Northeastern Bus Terminal (Mo Chit 2) to Khon Kaen daily. It takes 6-7 hours of travelling. SEPTEMBER 2016 | 13
KHON KAEN: SILKEN LEGACY – AND MORE! There’s more to Khon Kaen than meets the visitor’s eyes by Percy Roxas
K
hon Kaen, the second largest province in Northeast Thailand, is known for silk production. Indeed, it is the center of silk production in Thailand, particularly of mudmee silk, a delicate fabric woven by hand using the tie-dye technique. But there’s more to Khon Kaen than the ordinary foreign visitor to Thailand probably ever knows – and that’s why it’s fun exploring and enjoying it. Khon Kaen has been inhabited since millions of years ago when dinosaurs ruled the area. In the next few epochs, peoples of various cultures came to settle in the Khorat plateau. But the province first entered history when the ancient Khmer Empire annexed the area in the 12th century – and since then became a melting pot of cultures and traditions that helped shaped the province into what it is today. Today, Khon Kaen is the heart of the Northeast

region, a major hub of education and technology, commerce and politics, as well as a fast-rising tourism attraction, one of the fastest growing economies among the 20 provinces of Isan. While its fortunes came and went with the tides of various settlers, the province was able to preserve the inherent features that make it unique among the Isan provinces. Foremost of this is silk production, particularly in the Amphoe Chonnabot where excellent mudmee silk is delicately woven by local hands. Handed down from generation to generation, mudmee is a unique technique where silk threads are tied and dyed in a particular pattern, resulting in beautiful textile. Thus, the province holds a grand annual Silk Festival to celebrate its reputation as a “Land of Silk.” Tourists find Khon Kaen an excellent place not only to observe mudmee silk production but also to buy wholesale its silk products that now come in various guises. Khon Kaen is also noted for the magnificent murals, particularly those at Wat Chai Si, a temple located at Ban Sawathi. This temple is considered a national treasure – of great archeological, historical, and social significance - and was declared a national monument in 2001. The mural paintings, created by a folk
artist from Maha Sarakam, can be found inside and outside the main ordination hall. But perhaps no other element of Khon Kaen culture is as revered as the “Phuk Siew” or Friendship Making, which has been practices by the Isan people since the ancient times. Phuk Siew is considered a very important ritual, an embodiment of beliefs, mores and values that the Isan people hold dear. Phuk Siew is conducted to “tighten the friendship” unique to Isan. It is so important and quintessential to Isan, in fact, that today Phuk Siew is being organized with the region’s big silk festival. But Khon Kaen is more than these three elements combined, and if you make a visit today, there is so much to see and do by way of natural beauty and attractions, archeological riches and historical landmarks, local folklore, arts, and entertainment; and a gamut of other features that make the province great to visit.
THE PRIDE OF KHON KAEN
Welcome to Khon Kaen, the 2nd largest province in Northeast Thailand! Khon Kaen is a major hub of education and technology, a region that boasts a mixture of cultures and traditions that testify to the region’s rich long history! Also the land of mudmee silk and significant folk wisdom that helped shaped Thailand society today.

FINDING IN ISAN Don't miss these two less visited majestic temples in the plains of southern Isan, which testify to the enduring legacy of the Khmer empire in Thailand by Marco Ferrarese
All photos by Marco Ferrarese
W
hen planning an itinerary to Southeast Asia, the temple complex of Angkor Wat in Cambodia almost always comes to mind as one of the first choices. Elegant, mysterious and picture-perfect, it's visited by thousands of tourists every year. Fewer know that back in the glory days of the Khmer empire about 800 years ago, the geographies of modern Southeast Asia's nation-states were quite different. Indeed, Angkor was the last in a series of temple complexes connected by a 'royal highway' that extended from present-day Cambodia to northeast Thailand, and precisely, southern Isan. The two most significant vestiges of the Khmer Highway in Thailand are Phanum Rung, near the small town of Nan Rong, and Phimai, about two hours away from Isan's main city Nakhon Ratchashima. They are much less visited than the Angkor Wat complex, but certainly not less intriguing. Arriving in Nan Rong -- a small center in Buriram province laid at the side of the highway that continues east through Surin until the Lao border -- it's difficult to imagine that the glory of Phanum Rung lies just about 30km away. The best way to reach the complex is by renting a set of wheels and leaving the highway as soon as possible to venture out in the countryside. A well-paved road snakes through small villages, climbing up a steep hill and entering into Phanum Rung's archaeological area proper. The temple itself, attractively built with reddish laterite stones, stands proud at the top of a 440m-high extinct volcano. Its main tower is visible from the beginning of a path that leads visitors from the main complex's entrance to the volcano's foothills. At the sides, a series of Nagas, the celestial snake gods, accompanies the visitors to the bottom SEPTEMBER 2016 | 17

of a steep staircase that leads to the main temple. Two pools filled with lotus flowers welcome visitors with reflections of the main gopura straight before the entrance. Following the main corridor, it's easy to reach the back of the complex and observe the majestic pinnacle of the main temple. Originally built between the 10th and 13th century as a Hindu shrine, it represents mount Kailash, Shiva's heavenly abode. Differently from Phanum Rung, Phimai temple constituted one end of the Ancient Khmer Highway from Angkor, and is surrounded by a small town that has grown thanks to the importance of the archeological site. Even if having a similar area and being built in the Hindu style of temples like Angkor's Bayon, Phimai was on the contrary a Buddhist temple. Compared to Phanum Rung, the atmosphere at Phimai is quite different, as it is enclosed by a modern living city. The ruins are in fact at the
18
LOOKEAST | TRAVEL
center of small town Phimai, and it's indeed possible to stay in guesthouses right next to the historical park. Phanum Rung, on the other hand, looks like a place lost in the middle of the countryside, sheltered by modernity, and to some this is its winning point. Phimai may initially look more commercialized but offers more comforts and the chance of exploring and enjoying small town life -- and a lively night market -- right on the doorstep of an archaeological site. What’s more, Phimai is much more similar to Angkor Wat as it was built on a plain. It's the biggest of all Khmer temples in Thailand. Entering the complex, one has to walk for several hundreds meters before getting to the temple itself. Surrounded by other minor shrines and platforms ornated by nagas, Phimai's three towers come into view, framed by the branches of numerous trees that grow undisturbed in the quaint gardens.
On a clear day, the three darkred laterite towers appear grandiose against the sky. The best time to visit is during morning hours or sunset, when the sunlight is not too harsh, and the colors of the temples are at their most glowing. During the day, take a walk along the Mun River that skirts the ruins until Sai Ngam, a spooky banyan tree forest, said to be the biggest in Thailand; one that warrants creepy walks under a web of convoluted branches resembling the set of a horror film. Both Phanum Rung and Phimai have one thing in common. Unlike Angkor Wat's busy grounds, they still guarantee that sense of untamed exploration that one only gets when away from the crowds. Walking up these century-old staircases, roaming the grounds, and spending some quiet time sitting on the ruins and contemplating history is best done without hordes of cameratoting tourists. Get there before all this changes.

have always been quite skeptical of elephant tourism, and it is with good reason that Thailand’s symbol and favorite beast, and the abuse of it, has come under worldwide scrutiny of late. Especially in the tourist magnets such as Phuket and Samui there have been tourist fatalities, injuries, and calls by animal rights activists for a total cessation of elephant riding, and one does wonder if man and beast can strike a balance, or if there can be ethical elephant tourism at all. The good news is that at least up north, programs run by the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation (GTAEF) are doing their best to ensure there is a happy medium. There are a few prime reasons why things go deadly wrong at many of the smaller elephant riding outfits. In places like Phuket, there is little open space to care for elephants, and provide them suitable forest habitat,

as they really need to lead a relaxed, stress-free existence. Additionally many elephant attractions here use bull males, a prime “no-no,” according to John Roberts, director of the Asian Elephant Foundation. Bulls go into musth, a periodic condition accompanied by massive hormonal rise (testosterone levels rise up to 60%) and characterized by highly aggressive behavior. When bulls are in musth, they have killed their trainers and even members of their own elephant family. At the Golden Triangle Foundation, no bulls are ever used with tourists, not to mention that the bulls they do have plenty of forest space to hang out and decompress in, minimizing potential dangers in the surrounding camp. At the Golden Triangle, two upscale resorts -- the Anantara and the Four Seasons Tented Camp -- share the elephants. Income generated by tourism here goes
to help fund the various projects of the foundation, which include target training (a type of passive reinforcement training of the elephants with no punishment or negative consequences, a real departure from the often cruel methods imposed to train elephants here for circus type acts), the reintroduction of elephants into the wild, and sustainable mahout development, working to ensure that the trainers and their families have access to making a decent livelihood, without needing to resort to abuse of the elephants to do so. Also, the foundation does not buy or use wild elephants but takes elephants that cannot help themselves, many coming from the streets, illegal logging camps, or elephant shows. On my recent visit up North, I got a chance to go to elephant school. As opposed to some of the
more dubious operations where one just pays money and gets hoisted up on top of an elephant, at the Four Seasons Tented Camp, guests get put through a morning of training, which involves everything from putting on a blue jean mahout suit (the elephants are sensitive to color, so visitors are dressed in the same soft colors as the trainers), to learning how to speak to the elephant, to actual demonstration and practice as to how to successfully mount, ride, and get off of an elephant. While the command to go forward to an elephant is “pai,” don’t think about speaking Thai to the elephant and getting away with it. The other basic commands come from the Karen language (most likely due to the fact that there were traditionally large number of Karen mahout trainers). “Baen” is another important one, meaning turn, and perhaps the most vital, “how,” which means stop.

We were all given cards with these commands, along with the words for sit down, stand up, trunk up, slow down, lower the head, and lift the leg, but most folks were far busier with the more practical aspects of the training, that being the three ways to get on and off of the elephant. The easiest involves the elephant being made to kneel down, from which point one can hoist oneself up

without too much ado. A tougher one involves putting ones foot on the leg of the elephant, taking hold of the ear, and stepping up. Even harder, pretending to be an NBA player and, with the elephant in trunk and head bowed position, jumping up towards the forehead, eventually working ones way up the mount, a process that can go horribly wrong for guys if not executed right! The converse of this, getting off the elephant, is a bit more fun, involving sliding off the forehead toward the trunk, and then leaping to the ground. Elephant spines are fragile, not really made to support human riders, and the saddles that are used to ride them can cause plenty of damage. At our camp, we rode bareback, and were instructed to sit far up on the head, away from the spine. Additionally, the GTAEF elephants only work once per day, and are rested and rotated to ensure their health and welfare. The most enjoyable part of trekking with elephants, for all parties involved, is heading across a subchannel of the Mekong River, where the participants get a bit of adrenaline
going, especially when the water levels are high, and the elephants take the chance to drink, and then spray their riders with large showers to celebrate the end of the morning. The calls to ban elephant riding may have some very valid points, but they miss out on the simple fact that there are huge numbers of elephants who cannot go back to the wild, not to mention that they exist with mahout families that are now completely dependent on tourism to make a living. While all elephants really belong in the wild, the sad truth is that this is not a reality today. In Thailand alone there are around 4,000 captive elephants, who along with their trainers, need to be fed, and there is not enough natural space for the elephants to survive. Thus tourism may be one of the only ways of creating a practical balance. If done responsibly, it can be of great benefit to all parties involved. MUST-VISIT PRACHUAP With visitor numbers ever on the rise, it is just a matter of time for Prachuap Khiri Khan to become solidly etched on the map of Thailand’s top tourist spots. Here's why you should visit now:
T
by Lekha J Shankar
he town of Prachuap Khiri Khan is one of Thailand’s many interesting ‘unseen’ destinations although is lesser known than neighboring Hua Hin or Pranburi. It is a small, quiet beach getaway, where one can go for a break if one is not too fussy over luxury accommodations or lethal excitements. Prachuap Khiri Khan became a seaside resort during the reign of King Rama V. Famous for the three attractive bays - Noi, Pachuca, and Ao Manao -- it is also studded with beaches, caves, mountains, and forests. What we enjoyed most during our recent visit was that it was not noisy or water-crazy like the rest of Thailand (we visited during Songkran). It was a “walkable” town, and had enough ‘natural’ attractions to keep us busy, during our three-day stay. Our main complaint was that lots more need to be done to improve tourism infrastructure in the area, including better hotels and cleaner beaches. If you're a first-timer, it would be good to visit the TAT office and pick up a map. That’s so you can navigate the small town more easily. It is a ‘walkable’ town as we said earlier, and the roads are broad and less crowded. “Songtaews’ are available everywhere, with fixed rates to various spots. Our sightseeing started from the TAT office because it is located near the famous Mirror Mountain with the Lhao Chong Krajok temple. This is a temple noted for its numerous

monkeys, who greet you at the base of the Chong Krajok Mountain and accompany you up on the long 400step stairway. Chong Krajok Mountain is called the Mirror Mountain because there is a hole in the mountain from where you can have a unique view of the sky. Right on top is the small but arresting Wat Thammikaram built by King Rama 5, with some important Buddha relics, and where one can have a wonderful view of the entire town. From there, we walked to the town’s downtown, which is dotted with small cafes, parks, and streetshops. This is mostly a food market, and most of these shops close early, the exception being the Night Market. Bus, van, and railway stations are all located downtown. The main downtown attraction is the grand and elaborate City Pillar, which has a temple and shrine with exotic Lopburi-style artwork. We stayed at the modest Bangnangrom Guesthouse, which was homey, comfortable, and has an excellent location. Prachuap Khiri Khan Bay was just a stone’s throw away, and we often carried our morning cup of coffee or evening glass of wine, and sipped it there! There was also a 7-11 shop close by on the main road, as also some good seafood restaurants. In fact, we ate some of the best seafood during this trip: crab, squid, and king-sized fish -- at the cheapest of prices. We hired a songtaew with a friendly, English-speaking driver,

But first things first. The fee to the park is THB 200 per head, and one has to wade through waters to climb into the boat that would take you to there. That’s why one needs slippers for this. The boats have different rates, and the best one would be the cheapest: THB 400-ride directly across. We made the mistake of hiring the THB 1,000-boat, which promised to take us on a tour of the shrimp farms, but we saw none of these. However we got a long ride across the waters, and the visuals of the mountains and the waters in front were quite breathtaking. Laemsala Beach, where the national park is located, is quiet and beautiful. One can hire a deck chair and loll on the sands or walk to the waters and have a leisurely swim for a total day on the beach. The adventurous can climb the rough, treacherous path to the Phranakorn Caves, which my husband did, and came back with bruised knees and parched throat as he did not even get a bottle of water up in the caves! However, he was stunned by the visuals of the caves, including the wonderful lighting, grand spaces, and the unique Kuha Karihas Pavilion built by King Rama V, which is what most Thais go up for to see. Prachuap Khiri Khan certainly deserves to be seen more, as it is only 289km from Bangkok, and is excellently connected by train, bus, and the “lot tu” van. But it needs a lot more attention from the tourism department. It needs more sophisticated hotels, cleaner beaches, better transport for tourists, and more eateries. We had a great break, and we would like to go back – and hope the facilities had improved by then.

‘Phuket Vegetarian Festival’ is not just about the virtues of vegetarianism and this festival proves it! by Percy Roxas

ove the weird, the shocking, and the bizarre? Then, visit southern Thailand this month for the “Phuket Vegetarian Festival.” This annual event -- to be held Oct. 1-9, is no ordinary celebration of the virtues of vegetarians and vegans. How about sashaying barefoot on burning coals, climbing steep bladed ladders, or piercing your cheeks with a sharp metal rod – and then parading around the city as if you don’t feel any

pain at all? These “bizarre” feats are common during the festival. It’s also common to see people acting like they were under trance; talking like a “medium” possessed by some kind of spirit from the nether world. These rituals are what make the “Phuket Vegetarian Festival” what it is today: a major tourist attraction that thousands from all over the world take time to see. While the “bizarre” feats may have stolen the limelight off the
“Ma Song” during the festival, as is the belief – begin their feats of the weird. By this time, the “Ma Song” is supposed to possess supernatural powers. These powers, it is believed, allow them to perform self-torture without feeling pain and by doing so shift evil from another individual unto themselves and bring good luck to the community. There are two kinds of “Ma Song”: those who, having had an intimation of impending doom, want to extend their lives; and the chosen ones, those “especially chosen by the gods” for their moral virtues. Throughout the festival fireworks are lit and drums are sounded; the louder the better because, as the Chinese believes, noise drives away evil spirits. The festival ends with the merit-making ceremonies (sadoh kroh) and the send-off for the gods on the last night. You should see the explosion of fireworks at this time! How come it is called “Vegetarian Festival”? Perhaps, because the performers -- to be rendered “pure” in body and mind – must eat only vegetarian food before they can do their feats. They usually keep to a strict vegetarian diet for a varying number of days, but no less than three. It is a festival that you must see at least once in your Thailand visit!

festival’s other significant aspects; they are not the only thing that makes the festival interesting. (Local residents of Chinese ancestry observe a strict 10-day vegetarian or vegan diet for purposes of spiritual cleansing and merit-making during this period.) “The festival is a manifestation of our community’s adherence to age-old beliefs and traditions,” says Somsak (not his real name), a “Ma Song” last year. A “Ma Song” is a devotee “possessed” by the gods. “It is rooted in the concept of self-purification and a means to merit-making.” When the chanting and drumming reverberate on the streets, when the smell of incense creates an eerie feel in the air, and when participants – obviously entranced -- perform what to some of us may be baffling, even shocking, it is actually faith in action, believers say. (If you are faint-hearted, you better dash off to Patong Beach right away!) The original reasons for holding the event may have been lost to many attendees, but when the devotees bring out the statues of their gods and demigods for the long procession that kicks off the festival, they are reaffirming some ancient beliefs that most, Somsak says “fill in somehow, something void in their modern lives.” The “Phuket Vegetarian Festival” is so unlike any other festivals in the world in that while it seems eager to surprise, and even to shock, it is actually full of “routine ceremonies” as most festivals. The afternoon before the festival proper begins; devotees invite the “gods” to come down from heaven during a temple ceremony. They would raise a great pole called “Go Teng,” which is hung with nine lanterns at midnight, to mark the festival open. Two important gods -Yok Ong Hong Tae and Kiew Ong Tai Tae – are “invited” to preside over the opening ceremonies. Also invoked are the gods, Lam Tao, who keeps track of the living, and Pak Tao, who keeps track of the dead. Processions of these gods follow; and then the more “familiar” aspects of the festival follow. This is when the

TRAVEL MY FAVORITE PLACE

My favorite place: Phuket’s night markets susch as the Liab Duan Night Market, where you could get a good quality clothes with good deal. Bring there: Money. Be sure you have enough to spend even though the prices are quite cheap since you sure will want to buy a lot. Must-do: Aside from shopping, a must do for me is to have a small meal there. There's a variety of good street food to enjoy. Must-see: The people. I love onserving and learning the lifestyle of the night people there. I like the atmosphere too. But observing the people and their lifestyle, seeing how they talk and how they eat, and how they interact with one another, really is something. I think that is what completes the night market’s atmosphere. Must-buy: Fashion clothes, sportwear (good quality with nice design), and more1 Eat at: The market is separated into twothree zones. I would recommend giant squid with BBQ sauce, sushi, fresh coconut juice, toasted corn, and Korean food. Drink at: “ Rossaniyom Chomchob” for a light drink and hang out with friends. Sleep at: in Bangkok, aany place that is close to BTS/MRT stations is best for me.
My favorite place: Bangkok. It’s definitely one of the most exciting cities in Asia, with great opportunities for both fun and learning at the same time. The blend of old and new and the orderly and the chaotic are simply amazing! Bring there: An open mind and great capacity for the strange and the novel. Must-do: See the sights, explore the swanky pubs and bars with live music, sample all the gourmet happenings, but also try to meet a lot of local people! Must-see: Khao Sarn is great place but so are Sukhumvit 11, Ekkamai, and Thonglor. Must-buy: Shoes, clothes, fitness apparels – there’s so much really! Eat at: There’s so much to choose from, and major hotels offer some great dining options -- but don’t miss out on the street food scene, especially in Chinatown. Drink at: I don’t go out a lot, but I have enjoyed EQ with some of my friends from the basketball league. I don’t drink much as well but If I do, I’d go to Robin Hood, Aussie Pub, Coyote, Kudeta, Woo Bar, which are I suppose for regular guys like me. But there are so many places for reasonably priced drinks and pub grub really. Sleep at: Any place close to BTS/MRT stations, of course.
My favorite place: Bangkok, Thonglor area has got so much to discover. An abundant amount of excellent restaurants, there's also vintage shopping at J Avenue on Soi 15, not to mention 72 Courtyard and The Commons on Soi 17. It's a neverending street of both worlds. Bring: Your savings, one needs to shop and eat in Bangkok! Must Do: Trip down to Asiatique -- you'll feel like you're in an artificial world outside Bangkok. Places you right on the river with a vast amount of shopping, food, and some entertainment. There's a ferris wheel, a gokart track, which makes the trip even more fun. Opens only in the evening though Must See: The temples: Grand Palace, Wat Pho (make sure you get the traditional massage there), etc…. Must Buy: Street food! Eat at: Roast at the Commons has excellent pulled pork burgers and their mouthwatering desserts are to die for! Drink at: Oskars at Sukhumvit Soi 11 or Khaosan Road Sleep at: Anywhere along Sukhumvit!

hailand’s worldwide reputation is as varied as its geography. The “Land of Smiles” is equally known for its nightlife, beaches, mountains, wildlife, and more. No matter what kind of traveler you are, there’s something unique to do in Thailand that either you’ll only find here, or will not be the same anywhere else.
1 Become a Monk for a Month
There are a few groups now offering monk packages of various lengths. You’ll live in the temple, practice guided meditation, and learn about the Eight Precepts all while soaking in authentic culture. Some of the participating temples are also homes for orphaned children, so the proceeds from your stay are also going to help out. Check out monkforamonth.com to view different

Groups exist to help Thais from all walks of life -- from orphans to those at risk of trafficking, from prostitutes to indigenous groups, and more. There are even organizations that work to motivate Thai people to help their neighbors. While certainly you can help people anywhere in the world, Thailand has some truly innovative and groundbreaking programs such as the pioneering Rahab Ministries that helps women stuck in the entertainment lifestyle in Bangkok.
3 Care for an Elephant
If you really want a full elephant experience while also giving something back, visit the Thai Elephant Home just outside of Chiang Mai. Here you get the opportunity to not only ride them, but also truly learn about elephants and how they live. You’ll spend time cleaning the elephants and their homes, cut grass to feed the elephants, and hopefully make friends with one of the giants. The best part is that you are assigned an elephant for the day, rather than dealing with different ones through the day, increasing the likelihood of a bonding experience. The Thai Elephant Home is located at 50 Charoen Rd,
Chiang Mai. Tel: 089 434-2047; e-mail: wanacharts@yahoo.com
4 Get a Bamboo Tattoo
A traditional style bamboo tattoo is for those wanting something a bit more personal and permanent. Instead of the dull motorized drone of a modern tattoo, bamboo tattoos are done with a long bamboo “spear” with a metal tip at the end. Your skin will be pierced manually and ink applied. Check out Wat Bang Phra in Nakhon Chaisri. Nakhon Chaisri is to the west of Bangkok, just outside of Nakhon Pathom. Here you can find many locals and a few adventurous foreigners receiving a sacred tattoo unique and personal to each person receiving.
5 Downing the Chompers
Long favored by rural Thais, insect eating has become a tourist rite of passage in Thailand. With just a little bit of searching around Nana or Soi Cowboy late at night in Bangkok you’ll easily find a vendor. The vendors will typically serve up silk worms, grasshoppers, bamboo worms, water beetles, and crickets. Super adventurous eaters can sample spiders, scorpions, and you guessed it, cockroaches. Most of the insects have been battered and fried and could pass for anything if it’s dark enough (or the diner is drunk enough). And these are just a few, mind you! SEPTEMBER 2016 | 33

INTO THE 'GATES OF HELL' Kawah Jien surroundings are dramatic and beautiful, but they are home to one of the hardest and deadliest jobs in the world – those of the miners who extract sulphur from its depths by Dave Stamboulis

hile Mount Bromo with its mist rising off the volcanic crater floor gets most of eastern Java’s travel coverage, the Kawah Ijen crater and lake--located at the far east end of the island--remains a far more interesting story, and makes for a compelling visit. Not only are the dramatic mountain surroundings beautiful but also they are home to one of the world’s hardest and deadliest jobs, that belonging to the miners who extract the sulphur from its depths. The Ijen Plateau sits just off the end of Java’s eastern tip. Rising up to over 2500m, the area is a large caldera filled with stratovolcanoes, and home to the world’s most acidic lake, a beautiful emerald crater lake that sits at the bottom of the caldera. The volcanic soil on the slopes of the plateau is abundantly fertile, home to large coffee plantations, strawberry farms, and several relaxing hot springs, making the region a perfect spot for eco-tourism. While visitors here will marvel at the natural wonders of Ijen, perhaps of even greater interest are the local miners who inhabit the slopes of the volcano. The bottom of the Ijen Crater is rich in sulphur, and one of only two spots in the world where it can be mined (the other a small operation also in Java), after which it is taken out to be processed for making cosmetics, whitening sugar, and other uses. In what is surely one of the most gruelling jobs on the planet, the miners of Ijen make their living by digging up the sulphur, and then carrying it out of the crater on their backs in bamboo baskets. The miners start work around two in the morning, while the temperatures are still cool and when the sulphur is bathed in an eerie blue flame. The interior of the crater constantly belches smoke and steam, and most tourists visiting the area need

the provided gas masks to descend the 500m into the “Gates of Hell,” as the area is known, as the odor from the sulphur and gases can be overpowering. The miners chop loose large rocks of sulphur, which they then load into counterbalanced baskets and haul them out on their shoulders, ascending a precipitous and rocky trail to the crater rim and then back down to the parking lot, where trucks transport the sulphur to be processed in a nearby factory. The miners earn a paltry 800 Indonesian rupiah (less than THB3) per kilogram, and carry loads of up to 100kg at a time. The miners make two trips up and down in a morning, earning a maximum of 100,000 rupiah (THB290) for their efforts, and the only respite from their exhausting labor comes from cigarette breaks and the extra bit of cash they now make from tourists by selling small sculpted pieces of sulphur they have carved into souvenirs. My partner and I recently visited the plateau and hooked up with Samsuri, a wisecracking, highly energetic son of a miner who has decided to get out of the physically brutal labor of hauling sulphur. He had since become a self-taught ace photographer who now leads photo tours around the area. Sam, as he calls himself, doesn’t sleep a lot, guiding photographers three to four nights a week and sometimes more, getting up at midnight to start the hour long

ascent on foot up to the crater, in time to witness the glowing blue light, which emits from the sulphur in the crater only at night. Sam, who seems to live on pure adrenaline, along with 15 cups of coffee and a pack or two of cigarettes each day, is committed to using his tours as a vehicle for making change in the Ijen villagers’ lives, helping to start up schools for the miners’ kids, and ensure that more of them will have other choices for work in the near future. Another reason for the early start up the mountain is avoiding the buildup of gas clouds, which get too thick and noxious to ensure safety later in the morning. While the view from the crater rim is absolutely breathtaking, Sam tells us a few facts that reveal some of Ijen’s cruel truths. He says that while the crater lake might be photogenic, it is also more corrosive than battery acid, and that the miners, in addition to breathing the odorous fumes, have to watch every step while mining and hauling sulphur, lest they slip and fall into the lake, which would have horrific consequences. We meet up with several miners already hauling up their first loads of the day. Purnomo, whom I recognize from several documentaries made on the miners, has a wide and infectious gap-toothed smile, and takes easily to Sam’s gentle teasing of him, calling him “Leonardo, our local superstar”
due to all of his media fame (the BBC and a couple of independent filmmakers have given the Ijen miners some coverage). Purnomo says that he’s happy that more tourists are coming to Ijen, hoping that more exposure to what he and his comrades do every day may be of assistance with better pay or working conditions and hopefully better lives for the miners’ families in the future. He asks us for some cigarettes, a common request from the miners, as their smoking breaks are the only relief they get from the long hard slogs up and down into the crater. The descent into the crater is steep, boulder strewn, and perilous, and adding noxious gas and dim dawn light makes for a dizzying experience, causing us to stop and gather our wits and balance repeatedly. Another miner, Yudi, who is already on his second foray of the morning into the mine, passes us. Yudi is one of the younger miners, and perhaps the 80kg-load he is carrying doesn’t extract quite as brutal a physical toll on him as on some of the older miners, but like his compatriots, he hopes only for slightly better pay conditions, and comforts himself by knowing of Sam’s reputation as a guide on Ijen, bringing plenty of temporary cigarette breaks and the promise of better lives for his children’s futures.

modern amenities, recreational facilities, and dining establishments. Commuting to and from the hotel is a breeze. There are seven categories of rooms, which mean that there is a room for all kinds of holidaymakers -- from the comfortable Superior Room and newly renovated Deluxe Room to the Courtyard Club with alfresco green terrace and the inviting 56sqm- Executive Suite. Every room is generously spacious and stylishly decorated, and fully equipped with basic amenities and modern conveniences we expect from our hotels these days.

If you stay at the Executive Club, Courtyard Club, and Executive Suite rooms, there’s an added plus of exclusivity, such as a 37” plasma television and an ergonomic desk chair. Of course you enjoy special access to the Executive Lounge, where complimentary breakfast and evening cocktails are served, too! The Executive Floor, by the way, is newly renovated and offers a peaceful haven for discerning business and leisure travelers. There is a private room available for business meetings of up to 12 persons (complimentary) and a new addition, another private room that can host up to eight persons comfortably for discussions or gatherings on a smaller scale. If you are bringing the family, you can opt for The Family Room, which features two queen beds, a simple and tranquil ambience, and a comfortable space to ensure a good night’s rest. You might be delighted to know as well that they have now added a Themed Room featuring colorful and
fun themes, and well equipped with kids-friendly amenities, bunk bed and Xbox console in the room. Beyond the rooms, are more facilities for your further enjoyment: There is a well-equipped gymnasium for a morning or evening workout; a swimming pool for a refreshing dip, and a Jacuzzi to soak in and relax. Children enjoy the pool toys and have fun at the brand new inflatable water slide. They could extend their playtime at PAWS, the dedicated children’s playroom located at Level 1. Juniors will have fun jumping around on the trampoline, enjoy a bowling session with newly met friends or build their own kingdom or castle with Lego and blocks. And the Furama dining outlets. With Singapore continuously rising in popularity as a regional gourmet hub, could the F&B outlets be far behind? From breakfasts to dinners, you can spoil your taste buds here with some of the best flavors in the Lion City. You can indulge in the authentic Halal Indonesian cuisine at Kintamani Indonesian Restaurant or savor the vast spread of international dishes at The Square @ Furama. You can end the day with a sip of our special cocktail and immerse in the vivacious atmosphere at the Waterfall Lounge. Keeping the Furama kitchens abuzz is an entourage of experienced culinary chefs, helmed by awardwinning Executive Chef William Lum. Wide ranges of renowned wines are available at the restaurant to complement your finely prepared platter. Another one reason Furama
Riverfront is popular among business traveler must be its business and meeting facilities. Furama RiverFront with 12 meeting and conference rooms, which accommodates from as few as 15 up to 900 persons; and are ideal for professional corporate events, team building retreats, wedding ceremonies, or international conventions. All function rooms are well designed and fully equipped with audiovisual and wi-fi accessibility, and cater to every event. But perhaps the best thing is the overall service. Singapore is noted for efficiency and quick action, but you get more from the team at Furama RiverFront, the reason why the hotel has snapped the Best Mid-Range Hotel, Asia Pacific in the TTG Awards for five consecutive years (20092013). Service is consistently warm, friendly, attentive – and yet, never intrusive. Thus, you really feel cared for and pampered, and special here. And that’s why for many Singapore visitors, Furama RiverFront is always on top of the list of preferred places to stay. It is certainly one of ours.

HOTELS CHECKING IN
SHORT, SWEET STAY The new Novotel Bangkok Sukhumvit 20 matches superb facilities and luxuries with impeccable service and perks!

All photos from Novotel Bangkok Sukhumvit 20
hort, indeed, but sweet. On thing we regret about checking in at the Novotel Bangkok Sukhumvit 20 recently was that it was a really short stay. We booked an overnight stay, thinking that would be enough to get a good sampler of what this twomonth old hotel offers. We couldn’t have been more wrong. Getting to the hotel is easy. Located on Sukhumvit 20, one of Bangkok’s most vibrant districts and only 30 minutes’ drive from Suvarnabhumi International Airport, it is surrounded by all the life, excitement, and energy that the city is famed for. You don’t have to go far for shopping, dining, entertainment, and other fun options with many
attractions such as EmQuartier, Emporium, the Dinosaur Planet Theme Park, and other so close by or accessible via BTS Asoke, MRT Sukhumvit, and the Airport Rail Link. But there’s more to the hotel to stay for. Each of hotel’s 244 rooms blends clean modern lines and traditional Thai style perfectly, allowing you to unwind in an atmosphere of unmatched calm and relaxation. All rooms feature the fullest range of contemporary comforts, including complimentary Wi-Fi, modern furnishings, large LCD TVs and bright, stylish bathrooms. My room, an Executive Deluxe Room, was just opened for guests, and the 33sqm-room on the 24th floor offers stunning, dazzling view of the Bangkok skyline. A thoughtful selection of Thai artworks adorn the room; adding a touch of Thai elegance to its sleek modern style. The Executive Deluxe Room also grants access to the Executive Sky Lounge on the 25th floor – which unfortunately we didn’t have enough time for. But we made sure we had time for dinner at the Food Exchange, one of the three main F&B outlets at the hotel. The Food Exchange, located on the 7th floor, is a modern interpretation of traditional food
markets around the world, where diners can interact with professional chefs to see how their meals are specifically created (A separate review later). We selected some of the house’s signature dishes, and we were amply rewarded with a satisfying fulfilling dinner indeed. Other dining options are available at the Gourmet Bar and Sky on 20, the soon to open rooftop bar on the 26th floor. Since it was too late to check out even the Pool Bar and we were too tired in fact, we decided to retire early and enjoy the many amenities in the room. We had a great sleep indeed. That morning after a sumptuous breakfast at Food Exchange, we checked out the other facilities: The swimming pool on the 9th floor includes a large children’s swimming area, and we can imagine ourselves sunbathing here or relaxing with a good book, or sipping on a cocktail from the poolside bar while admiring the view of the city. There’s a spa and a fitness center -- In Balance Fitness Center – and we wanted to burn off a few calories but we need to go to our office still. With what very little time left, we checked out the hotel’s meeting facilities, and as can be expected from a Novotel, they are perfect for every type of occasion: cutting edge technical equipment, professional planning and catering service, and all. There’s a Large Ballroom with natural daylight for up to 1,000 people, six additional Meeting Rooms, and three private Dining Rooms across three floors of function space. While we were not able to enjoy every bit we were supposed to enjoy during this stay, we were at least able to enjoy the friendliness of staff every step of the way. From the doorman and front office receptionist who took us to the Executive Lounge for checkin, to the team at Food Exchange who was so very attentive of us during dinner, to the shuttle driver who brought to Asoke on the way out, we felt genuine, consistent, warmth. With such service and comfort that we have experienced during our very short stay, we wanted to be back again soon – and this time, stay longer!

4th in row for L’Appart: Wine Spectator Award
Bangkok -- Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit has announced that L’Appart, its elegant rooftop bar and restaurant, has been awarded the prestigious “Wine Spectator Award of Excellence 2016.” This is the fourth consecutive year that the restaurant has won the award. Acknowledged as one of the most important accolades within the hospitality industry, the international “Wine Spectator Award of Excellence” is seldom won by restaurant in a country where the wine culture is still maturing. L’Appart’s success is attributed to the introduction in June 2012 of a unique concept, “Voyage du Vin” that allows lovers of fine wines and French-inspired cuisine to discover fine wines chosen by a knowledgeable wine advisor, Rémi Prim. L’Appart won the award for “Wine by the Glass” in the “Wine List of the Year Thailand Awards 2013”, and also won the “Wine Spectator Award of Excellence” in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

NEW EXOTIC SPA TREATMENTS YOU MUST TRY With so many great spas in Bangkok and so many wonderful treatments to enjoy, how to we choose the best one? Not an easy task, for sure, but here are three new treatments that you must try:
Rite of ‘Passage’
It is probably no coincidence that our continuing spa journey took us to this newly opened spa at CentralWorld (12M Floor, Zen Tower). Harnn Heritage Spa Krungthep blends unique Asian techniques and knowledge that have been passed down from generation to generation into finely crafted, exceptional signature treatments. Is it any wonder then, that for our treatment there, we selected “Sukhothai Passage”? Sukhothai is the birthplace of Siamese nation, from where present-day Thailand owes so many things. Taking inspiration from this, Bangkok’s latest luxury spa unveiled new treatments based on Asian holistic wisdom and cherished cultural heritage. The goal, as the spa providers like to put it: to enhance the harmony of our five senses for a balanced restoration of body and mind. This treatment, also dubbed “The Rise of Happiness” is an indulging ritual of blissful head-totoe pampering indeed. It begins with a soothing soak in Harnn’s original Herbal Tea Bath to prepare the skin

for a revitalizing body scrub, which we really enjoyed, Then, we were given an acupressure foot massage to promote a balanced natural energy flow, getting us even more ready for the Thai Aromatic Massage that followed. This massage relieves muscle tension relief, improves muscle tone, and replenishes the skin’s natural luster with natural massage oil. The "Sukhothai Passage" is completed by a facial treatment using white mulberry extracts (to preserve the condition of the skin while promoting a brightening effect). Of course, “Sukhothai Passage” is only one of the three tailor-made creations creatively named after the golden age of Siam (the other two are Ayutthaya and Ratanakosin). Also, 14 other therapies are named and inspired by other distinct characters
of Bangkok. Make a visit to this spa founded by the pioneering spa product of the same name (Harnn spa products), and enjoy a tranquil atmosphere as well within its greythemed, luxurious space with a contemporary design that covers 360sqm. If you think the Harnn Heritage Spa Krungthep at the Emporium is a great experience, you must try this one!
Bliss with Candle
From the lobby, you take the lift to the 22nd floor where the newly revamped Banyan Tree Gallery is located. After the usual courtesies, a receptionist takes you down through a spiral staircase leading to the Banyan Tree Spa treatment rooms where your therapist awaits. Quickly you are taken to the room where

your treatment, the new “Candle Massage” recently unveiled by the spa, will take place. As your feet takes a welcome bath, the therapist presents a choice of diffuser scents, which immediately help uplift the senses, and get you ready for what follows. Then you lie down the treatment bed face down and enjoy the experience. You eagerly await what’s unique with the Candle Massage. Without seeing what’s happening you try to use your other senses. You smell a whiff of lavender, eco-friendly your therapist says, and then you feel a touch of warm candle oil on your skin. “The use of soy massage candle creates a haven of relaxation with its glow while the melted candle oil offers warm therapeutic benefits,” says your therapist, and you agree. You give in, you just let her do her thing, and
with flowing strokes -- medium to strong pressure – she takes you into this blissful experience, tired muscles eased, and tension melton away rapidly. Minutes passed and it could have been eternity, your journey to a word of bliss. But in fact, it was only 90 minutes, and when she wakes you up, you wonder why you can’t stay in this blissful world forever. But wait, it isn't over yet. The treatment comes with a 30-minute Calm Time of refreshments and relaxation, and before you leave you enjoy delectable refreshments while sipping on your choice of soothing tea in the lounge area. A common Bangkok spa ritual, you say? To some maybe. But in fact, this “Candle Massage” is a new treatment – just launched last month to mark the Banyan Tree Bangkok’s 20th anniversary – and only available at the Banyan Tree Bangkok Spa (Tel: 02 679 1200, ext. 1524/1525, email spa-bangkok@banyantree.com or visit banyantreespa.com).
Feel from the Golden Age
Siam 2482, The name was inspired by the history and traditions of Thailand. BE 2482 was the year
the country changed its name from Siam to Thailand. To commemorate the year of BE 2482, Anantara Spa (Tel: 02 126 8866, ext. 1525 or email: spa.asia@anantara.com) of Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel weaves its exclusive signature treatment concept around this special number. Thus “Siam 2482” – the signature treatment. In this massage, “2” bamboo sticks are used. The, “4” refers to the type of massages provided in a single treatment: Thai massage, Bamboo massage, Thai Herbal Compress massage, and Foot Reflexology massage. The next number, “8,” refers to the pieces of indigo compress balls (hand-dyed using natural color pigment from local Butterfly Pea flower) used in your treatment. The last number, “2,” refers to gold leaves placed on the wish area of the left arm and left side of the chest to encourage the quieting of the mind. All in 90 minutes you experience a "warm bamboo" massage, healing herbal compress, acupressure, and Thai stretching exercise, which my therapist says, leads to increased energy flow and calming balance. It did! The herbal compress promotes healing and releases muscle tension. The bamboo stick massage stimulates the circulation, and the herbal oil massage and foot reflexology that follow soothe and wash away tension. The treatment ends in a so-called “mindfulness” ritual gold leaf patches placed on the wish area as mentioned earlier that caps your session. Ah, bliss! Anantara Spa – open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. -- is of course one of the most reliable and luxurious spas in Bangkok, and should be included in every spa-goers bucket list. There are more spas and spa treatments in Bangkok to recommend – more in our coming editions! SEPTEMBER 2016 | 51

S
ansiri PLC recently opened its first retail mall project. Dubbed as “the new hub of international creative lifestyle,” Habito is located in the heart of Sukhumvit 77 (Onnut 1/1), in a residential community also called T77 where Sansiri’s seven residential developments are also located. Sansiri is Thailand's leading fully integrated real estate developer. According to Sansiri spokespersons, Habito is the first in Thailand to be developed by the renowned creative agency, Winkreative, the global creative agency ran by media mogul and editor-in-chief of the world's A-list Monocle Magazine, Tyler Brûlé. meaning people -- aims to serve and support the lifestyle of over 5,000 families and fulfill quality lifestyle needs of over 10,000 households around the T77 area. The lifestyle hub boasts convenient facilities for hanging-out, working, learning, and living. What makes Habito a cool new place to be? We essay eight great reasons:
1 LOCATION AND CONVENIENCE
Habito’s location, made very accessible by the nearby skytrain and expressway systems, makes it appealing, especially to families with kids. For one, a new Bangkok International Preparatory Secondary School is set to open in the area next
year. The residential project offers convenience not only to those living in the Sansiri properties but also to thousands of other households in the area.
2 HIP HANGOUTS
A selection of restaurants and cafes from around the world and several popular hangouts, besides a premium 7-Eleven store, call Habito "home." These include Saranghae, the brand’s first Korean BBQ buffet; Teien, Thailand’s first flagship premium sushi bar; Saeb Lai, which serves original Isan cuisine; Papa Shabu Farm, the everpopular container-store style shabu using homemade papa’s recipes; the award-winning Iroha Ramen & Izakaya, which serves original Japanese ramen; Tom N Toms Coffee, with a never-before-seen menu; Chairman by Chefman with its famous lava bun; and David’s Bakery, whose soft cookies should easily be a of those with sweet tooth. Other chic bistros are also coming soon such as the Mexican El Mariachi Taqueria; Korean fried chicken bistro, Choi Choi; the classic Italian Mont Calzone; and the street-style authentic Vietnamese Muiné.
proper meals, one can go to the Food Lab, where there is also a cooking workshop coached by professional chefs.
7. NATURAL LIVING SPACE
3. HEALTH AND BEAUTY FACILITIES
Habito should also appeal to fitness and health buffs. There are boxingyoga hybrid classes at Rajadamnern Singha Muay Thai Academy (RSM), for one, and the place lends itself ideally to jogging activities. After working out, one can have their hair done at a Korean salon, Sunshine by Prestige. Topping off the lifestyle hub offerings are fashion offerings such as genuine leather shoes from BSN Factory Outlet. Service centers such as AIS, Siam Commercial Bank, HABITO Dental Clinic, and Kleen laundry shop are also situated within the premises.
4: CO-WORKING SPACE & CREATIVE STUDIOS
Habito features Southeast Asia's largest co-creation community and
co-working space, called Hubba-to, perfect to get creative juices running. A collaboration between Sansiri and Hubba Thailand, Hubba-to is more than a co-working space. There are Artisan Workshop spaces, which include seven studios: Dark Room, considered a rare item for the modern photography industry; Wearable Arts Room, which allows fashion designers to break the rules by inspiring them to develop more interesting creations with all related tools and equipment provided in the room; Ceramic Room, dedicated to crafted workshop of pottery, ceramic, and woodcraft; Screening Room, which aims to support cinematography and photography; and Marker Space, which is fully equipped with cutting-edge digital tools such as laser cutting machines and 3D printers. Open 24 hours, these special studios are designed to cater to varying needs of designers from various fields, to elevate Thai designs to compete in the world arena, and to create an inspiring hub for artists and other creative souls.
5 FUN FACILITIES GALORE
Over 10,000sqm of ‘Natural Living’ space, inspired by Japanese architecture and culture, is available at Habito. Breezy, close to nature, and eco-friendly, the semi-outdoor space is designed to benefit from natural sunlight and airflow, thereby reducing the use of electricity. The space pays great attention to every lifestyle need of the residents, and motherand-child friendly facilities such as children’s toilets and breastfeeding rooms are provided.
8 ENTERTAINMENT OFFERINGS
Not the least, Habito has lined up entertainment activities for three weekends in a row beginning in October. Guests can participate in activities such as learning the art of table setting and cooking during the first week; and enjoy handicraft activities and the fun playgrounds for both kids and adults the following week. In fact, there will be special prizes and free giveaways for lucky participants as well as mini concerts featuring famous artists and entertainers every weekend. But for us not leaving around the area, how friendly is visitng Habito? Wel, there's a shuttle service to and from the BTS Onnut skytrain station, for one!.
The new lifestyle hub boasts convenient facilities for hanging-out, working, learning, and living.
Retail x Café x Food Lab is a 3-zone connected space where artworks and handicrafts collaborated with blisby.com – the popular online handicraft network – are available for sale. LIFESTYLE PERSONALITY
KLAUS UP-CLOSE Building up on the pillars of consistency, continuity, and commitment, GM Klaus Sennik leads Ramada Plaza Bangkok Menam Riverside in enjoying its well-deserved reputation for quality service and value for money
D
iligent. Understanding. Determined. These, in his own words, describe Klaus Sennik, general manager (GM) of Ramada Plaza Bangkok Menam Riverside. These, according to his hotel associates, are what they like in their current hotel GM. These, indeed, endear this veteran hotelier to his team and guests at one of the Chao Phraya River’s most iconic hotel properties. But there’s more to Sennik than these words can say. Sennik has enjoyed a long, varied career in the international hospitality business, starting as a junior chef at the Holiday Inn Augsburg in Germany. With a strong background in F&B, he found himself working in many places around the world. He previously worked in Thailand (1982 to 1988), which gave him valuable knowledge and experience about the Thai people and their culture. But it was not until 2011 that he returned to the kingdom again -- when he was appointed GM of the Ramada Plaza Bangkok Menam Riverside. It was a challenging time for the hotel; but it was a challenging time that Sennik’s mettle and experience proved equal to. “When I was appointed GM in 2011 the city was facing a crisis of confidence,” Sennik said. “Occupancy at our hotel, like many others, was low. Thailand’s tourism reputation was in tatters. We worked tirelessly to boost confidence again, persuading business and leisure travelers that Bangkok was still open for business. "We explored new avenues to increase brand awareness and regain market penetration in major source markets around the world. Thailand has since faced other challenges but we are fortunate that the country’s
by Percy Roxas tourism industry is resilient.” The hotel – which is celebrating its 30th year this month -- has proven that it is resilient as well. “Our room occupancy levels this year suggest that we are maintaining our competitive advantage,” the amiable GM said. “Travelers enjoy an unprecedented choice of hotels in Bangkok. We are fortunate that many choose to stay by the Chao Phraya River. "Of course, competition between the quality riverside hotels is always intense but we also work together to promote the attractions and benefits of choosing a riverside location.” At the Ramada Plaza Bangkok Menam Riverside lobby, Sennik is the warm, friendly, open, and smiling presence that constantly greet guests. He is obviously enjoying his job. He says he has always wanted to become an hotelier. “Becoming a hotel GM was a natural career progression for me after gaining valuable experience in the hotel and hospitality sector at middle and senior management level,” Sennik said. “I first dreamed of becoming a pilot and, in many ways, being a hotel GM is rather like controlling the joystick of a large airliner full of passengers. The major difference is that hotel GMs can never switch on the auto-pilot!” The success of the hotel can be measured in many ways: Financial results, room occupancy levels, average daily room rates, guest satisfaction surveys. But Sennik says he is comforted by the fact that more and more of their guests are repeat visitors. “That, for us, is extremely satisfying,” he said. “We are always striving to improve every aspect of our business – accommodation, F&B, and MICE. By seeking continuous service improvement we ensure that our
guests enjoy their experience at our hotel. “The high numbers of repeat guests staying at the hotel suggests that we have the right formula to create guest satisfaction. There is something about a busy river in a major city that captures the imagination of hotel guests. Our guests enjoy the opportunity to watch life go by on the Chao Phraya,” he continued. As the hotel celebrates is 30th birthday, Sennik’s first wish is “that our caring and dedicated owners enjoy the occasion. This is a very special celebration for the entire family and they deserve tremendous credit for their commitment to the city’s hospitality sector.” Secondly, he sees it as an opportunity to thank the hotel’s loyal patrons. “Bangkok has witnessed many changes and much development since 1986. Our hotel represents consistency, continuity, and commitment,” he said. ”My first role as a GM has always to respect and adhere to Thai beliefs and Thai culture. We have many members of our team with over 20 years of continuous service. Our hotel is an integral part of their daily lives and every day I see examples of how much they care about the hotel and our guests.” The hotel staff members are, in fact – for Sennik – the hotel’s greatest assets. “Without their loyalty and dedication we would be unable to deliver our commitment to the very best standards of hospitality, service and accommodation,” he said. “Maintaining guest satisfaction is absolutely crucial for every member of our team. We have 30 years of experience in providing these standards -- our daily mission -- at every touchpoint in our hotel."
“We are on track for a successful, rewarding year and our 30th anniversary celebrations ar giving us a high profile. We continue to enjoy encouragingly high levels of occupancy, and we are looking forward to another very busy, successful high season.

IT’S A SEASON FOR
Here’s why Thailand’s newfound moniker as the new gourmet capital of the world is well deserved! by Percy Roxas
N
o doubt about it, Thailand’s influence on the region’s culinary scene is growing. Not only has Thai food been continuing its upward ascent as one of the world’s favorite cuisines but also several of the city’s top restaurants are being recognized among the world’s best, with Gaggan Anand’s restaurant claiming the No. 1 spot two years running (2015 and 2016) in the regional Best 50 Restaurants awards, and places like Nahm, Eat Me, and bolan, joining the elite group too! In the words of William Drew, group editor of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, says: “In recent years, the country’s vibrant restaurant scene has matured, welcoming world-class establishments serving a variety of international cuisines. Thailand is fast establishing itself as one of Asia’s key gastronomic hubs…” Indeed, the kingdom has always attracted many of the world’s top chefs, either as guest chefs in finedining events that are now regular year-round occurrences city, and more so of late. Marco is also an occasional teacher at some of the Italy's most celebrated culinary schools, such as those in Jesi, Montecatini Terme and "Accademia del Gusto" in Arezzo.

WINE&DINE CHEF IN FOCUS
HE LOVES SPRINGING SURPRISES Executive chef Anil Kumar keeps on springing surprises at Indus Contemporary Indian Restaurant, especially by using local Thai ingredients in creating great Indian food for the guests of the multi award-winning restaurant
ince he was a child, Anil Kumar – the new executive chef at Indus Contemporary Indian Restaurant on Sukhumvit 26 – says has always enjoyed being in the kitchen. He remembers watching his mother and grandmother getting busy in the kitchen cooking their favorite Indian specialties with fondness. Eventually he started helping out in food preparation, and as years go by, developed a wish to create the dishes himself. That led him to a career in the culinary field, which he believes until now to be the field where could continue to grow his passion. He went on to graduate with a degree in tourism studies from the Delhi University, and boosted his credential with a professional diploma in Culinary Specialty from the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering, and Nutrition in Panibat, Haryana. After passing his course, he joined the ITC Group of Hotels in Gurgaon, India. It didn’t take long before he received an opportunity to work with the IHG Group of Hotels (at Crowne Plaza Today, Gurgaon). It was here that he first became Head of Indian Cuisine under the supervision and support of senior chefs. After five years with IHG, he moved to the Sunrise Groups of Hotels in Egypt, where he opened a couple of Indian fine dining restaurants under the brand, Masala.
“It was great exposure for me overseas – which was my first,” he recalls. After that he joined The Sun Siyam Irufushi Beach Spa & Resort (Ex- Hilton Property) in Maldives, where he opened an Indian specialty restaurant, Taste of India. His responsibilities included heading a kitchen brigade of 116 chefs for four months in the absence of an executive chef. From there he returned to India, journeying to the South for a new challenge by joining The Park Hyderabad as master chef at an Indian specialty restaurant called Aish. Today, Chef Anil works at Indus, which he says he enjoys to the hilt. “I have always loved being around people from different nationalities and so it was easy for me to adapt and adjust to living and working here,” he says. “Working with Thais is fun and I learn about Thai food too!” Since he joined Indus, Chef Anil has been busy creating new, innovative dishes that made the restaurant – one of Bangkok’s most awarded restaurants in fact – even more popular. Indus patrons have raved over his signature dishes such as “Laal Maas (a spicy mutton curry),” “Tawa Lobster,” and “Hyderabadi Murgh Dum Biryani.” While he is happy that Indus guests love his food, Chef Anil says he is not one to rest on present laurels. “Indus is a popular, multiaward-winning restaurant with very
high standards in food and service,” he says. “I am excited to be in a key position to preserve the prestigious reputation of Indus in the Bangkok dining scene. Rest assured that we will keep on bringing surprises for our guests, especially by using local Thai ingredients in creating great Indian food.” “Also, the restaurant prides itself in providing the most attentive, friendliest service in Bangkok, which makes the guests’ enjoyment of high quality, freshly made food with original Indian spices even more wonderful and delightful. It’s such an inspiring place to work in because of its great tasting food and its ambiance.”
“I enjoy seeing our guests at Indus having fun enjoying my dishes and I hope they will continue to return to sample more and more surprises we are planning to spring up for them.”

WINE&DINE BAR SCENE
THE OTHER NANA 7 hotspots that makes this ‘shabby chic’ soi on the fringes of Chinatown a great alternative to the Thonglor and Ekkamai scene
T
ell someone in Bangkok that you are heading over to Nana, and they’ll most likely look at you in horror, with a sly smile, or perhaps with wink out of the corner of their eye. Nana, while also being the name of a street and skytrain station, is far more readily known for its go-go bars and some of the city’s more naughty nightlife. However, there is a newer and far more different Nana that is making headlines these days, that of Soi Nana, a decaying block of crumbling shophouses just on the fringes of Chinatown just off Charoenkrung Road, which is now home to a resurgent avant garde bar scene, besides some of the city’s best

by Dave Stamboulis kept secrets. It’s a great alternative to the usual scene found along Thonglor or Ekkamai. One could define this quiet little neighborhood as shabby chic. Most of the bars and galleries in this area are just funky hole-in-the-wall spots, but the drinks, atmosphere, and even the prices as well will match anything being offered on Thonglor these days. Leading the charge is Teens of Thailand (76 Soi Nana, Tel. 081 443 3784, www.facebook. com/teensofthailand/), a gin lovers’ paradise where master mixologist bartender Niks Anuman-Rajadhon serves up creative gin mixes and infusions. Think Thai ice tea gin and tonics, chrysanthemum G &
Ts, and lots of upscale pours using Hendricks, Hanami, or Ashley Sutton’s handcrafted Iron Balls gin. Teens is like a speakeasy, hidden behind a set of thick wooden doors right out of a movie set, and the interior features old Thai cinema posters and feels more like an industrial loft in Manhattan. There aren’t a lot of seats here, so patrons linger outside, or stand talking to one another clustered around the bar or wooden stairs of the old shophouse. A hundred meters down the road, a more Thai old school atmosphere prevails at Tep Bar (69-71 Soi Nana, Tel. 098 467 2944),a two-storey shophouse tucked down a lane full of dilapidated
All photos by Dave Stamboulis
tenements. The interior is far more hip, with mood lighting, wooden tables downstairs, and tatami-style cushions to recline on upstairs. The emphasis here is on traditional Thai, with housemade yadong being the signature beverage. “Yadong,” or white spirits with mixed herbs, is usually found on street corners in Bangkok, both illegal and tasting like gasoline, but at Tep it is smooth, stylish, and comes in a tasting platter with three different shots, as well as being used for creative yadong cocktails. Additionally, a band plays traditional Thai instruments nightly to add to the ambience. A few steps farther down the road lies El Chiringuito (221 Soi Nana, Tel. 085 126 0046), a Spanish tapas bar right out of Barcelona. It’s no surprise that the Thai owner here lived in Spain for six years, and is married to a Spaniard. Pincho tortillas, bocadillos, croquetas, and xoriguer gin rule the roost here, with daily specials being displayed on the photogenic slate blackboard. In
addition to the food and drink, there is live music at times, and the owners even operate an Air BnB should you get the urge to stay. While not nearly as fancy as any of the above spots, 23 Bar & Gallery (92 Soi Nana, Tel. 080 264 4471), enlivens Soi Nana just as much. The former owner of Bar 23, a cult-like status dive bar on Asok, has relocated and flipped the name around here, but still goes for cheap drinks, rock n roll, and lots of local art, led by the owner’s paintings and drawings, which cover the walls. If you dig the art, this area is becoming a hot spot for the bar/ gallery crowd, and it’s worth checking out the nearby Soy Sauce Factory (Charoenkrung Soi 24, Tel. 092 115 8696), a 10-minute walk from here, where there are daily photo and art exhibitions, parties, and other events. The eclectic industrial venue gets its name from the fact that the building used to in fact be an old soy sauce producing warehouse. Also of merit is Cho Why (41 Soi Nana, www. facebook.com/chowhybkk), a cool art
and project space bar in a beautiful old building right across the street from Teens of Thailand, although it is only open sporadically for events. Finally, for those who want to enjoy the atmosphere but don’t like to party, stop in at Nahim Cafe X Handicraft (78 Soi Nana, Tel. 02 623 3449), a place that began as an Instagram handicraft shop, and has since expanded to become a very creative and artsy cafe, complete with veggie cushions and lots of colorful patterns and bright lights. You can enjoy a range of tasty treats here, from salsa and chips to Nutella and strawberry waffles, pumpkin soup, and even veggie lattes or cold brew signature teas. It’s the perfect spot to relieve hangovers from all the other places along the soi! This Soi Nana is a great vision of Bangkok new and old, where trendy and cutting edge bars have not replaced the former rather dilapidated old neighborhood but instead just enhanced it without needing to tear anything down or build anything new.

WINE&DINE BAR REVIEW
for the Three new hotspots that prove 72 Courtyard – located between sois 16 and 18 in Thonglor -- is the “in” place to be these days! by Posh Wattanaporn
Evil Man Blue
Evil Man Blue
Whether you are feeling blue or you are just fancy sipping on a serious cocktail drink, Evil Man Blue (EMB) is a good choice for you. The purple and blue neon lights will bring you to the dimly lit, narrow bar with retro funky atmosphere. This place is like an American diner and underground jazz bar, and unique even though it’s kind of trapped itself in 1950s. You are sure to find a beautiful spot to imbibe the Thonglor bar scene. The atmosphere in the secluded bar feels intimate and allows you to talk to the bartender. EMB is a fun place with a fun quote on the wall like “Trust me I’m a bartender.” When you want to release your blues, you can
write something on the wall here! We met the head mixologist, Koravic (aka Jae). You can just tell him the spirit base you like and he can offer you the delicious cocktails to suit your mood. The man behind this successful bar is Liam Baer, an American mixologist who helps to create drinks.

Beer Belly
Music: During normal hours, EMB plays funk, R&B, old school hip-hop. Every Wednesday to Saturday night you can enjoy beautiful live Jazz
music by Dan Philips, a renowned jazz guitarist; and the Bangkok Edge Quartet. Drinks: Try this adorable drink, “This Monkey’s Gone to Heaven,” which is a mixture of bananawashed blended scotch, maple, chicory, Amaro, cinnamon and determination. The presentation is impressive with the glass labeled with three monkeys. It’s best to sip this drink while having banana chips. It’s a truly rich mix with a strong cinnamon odor. For something refreshing, go for “The Honey Badger,” a combination of rosemaryinfused bourbon, yellow chartreuse, honey, citrus, ginger, and vindication wine. Other masculine cocktails are “The Salad Day,” an interesting name that will surely catch the attention of salad lovers. It’s a mix between tomato washed gin, French Aperitif Liquor, Bianco Vermouth, and pink

peppercorn. Food: Nothing more American than “Mac and Cheese Balls (THB260),” a cocktail will go well with it. Also, “The Pizza Pocket (THB240),” a new menu that you should try. Why go: Why not go? 72 Courtyard keeps bringing the real deal for Bangkok eateries and bar scene. The whole complex offers you good drinks, good food, good music, what else do you want? 72 Courtyard – Ground Floor Open: Tues-Sun, 6 p.m. till late Tel: 02 392 6922 Rating: 4/5 www.facebook.com/EvilManBlues/
Beer Belly
Think about beer o’clock; think about “Beer Belly” -- another hip place that you can’t miss at 72 Courtyard. It’s a paradise for beer tap lovers (Hitachino (THB 420/pint), La Chouffe (THB 420/pint), Verdett (THB 380/pint), Hoegaarden (THB 360/pint) and many more). It’s a place where you can enjoy beer while playing game such as jenga, pooltable, pingpong, and beerpong with your friends. Music: Live music every WednesdaySaturday! Why go: Lots of fun games, and cool graffiti to enjoy especially for taking photos with the wall. Try it out.

LITTLE BAO
From Hong Kong with love, Little Bao is another magnet that draws in foodies to 72 Courtyard, a swanky hotspot for dining and drinking hub in Thonglor. The pink neonlight of the logo is iconic that you cannot miss the place when walking into the complex. Chef and owner May Chow decided to bring her award-winning bao (Chinese burger) to Bangkok. Her idea: to present the modern diner with a fun and playful culinary in a sophisticated and relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant is decorated with astonishing wooden seats and metal bar stools – but it's all about sharing food and having fun whether with food, drinks, or music. Little Bao Bangkok follows the same original menu as in Hong Kong but Chef May surprises Bangkok fans by offering exclusive dishes such as “Under the Bridge Crab Fried Rice (THB 290),” a delicious crab fried rice with chili, black bean, and topping with lots of crispy garlic. The smoked eggplant salad (with chili garlic miso, yogurt, pine nuts, and shiso, THB 240) truly amazed us. The flavor was rich and delicious. Derived from a classic Chinese stirfried eggplant mixed with bean paste, it reveals sweet and salty notes from one bite to the next. Perhaps the
tastiest vegetarian dish we've ever tasted. Another promising starter is the lamb tartare (mixed with a juicy fuyu mayo, takana, and fried shallot (THB 360). It tasted like no other. This tender and toothsome dish is served with yuba chips. Bao buns are what you can't miss. It's like a Chinese burger, split in half and stuffed with one of the four filling options: pork belly, crispy Sichuan chicken, fish tempura, and shiitake tempeh (THB 260 each). But our mission would not be complete without having the “Ice Cream Bao” (THB 140), the delicious signature ice cream that melts your stress way. There are two ice cream flavors: green tea ice cream with condensed milk and salted ice cream with caramel. Ice-cream baos can take up to 15 minutes, so order early! Don't forget to try their signature cocktails: Yuzu leaf, wild turkey, yuzu, maple syrup and seal salt (THB 420), and Chry's lemonade, cana brava rum, chrysanthemum, honey, lemon (THB 340). Imported beers such as Hitachino from Japan and Flying Dog from the U.S. are also available. Why go: No, this is not a place that specializes in bao bun; its menu offers real Cantonese flavors in Western style.

THIS MONTH'S WINNER
Our winner this month is Daranee Kongrut, who sent a timely piece about the “Riceberry Organic Project” organize recently to help poor farmers in the countryside. Daranee gets a giveaway prize from our sponsor this month for her contribution. Congratulations!
I
n commemoration of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s birthday and Mother’s Day last month, the Friends In Need (of "PA") Volunteers Foundation organized the "Riceberry Organic Project” at Parc Paragon, Siam Paragon, with H.R.H. Princess Soamsawali presiding over the grand opening. The “Riceberry Event’ aims to support farmers especially those in agriculture areas affected by the recent severe flooding, by giving them alternative health benefits and better life. It also encourages the public to eat riceberry for health. The foundation was created under the royal patronage of H.R.H. Princess Soamsawali and H.R.H. Princess Bajrakitiyabha to find a crop that would help create a more stable future for the farmers. Riceberry ihas been developed and registered as a protected new plant specie in Thailand. To promote riceberry, the foundation joined hands with Kasetsart University, the Bank of Agricultural and Cooperatives, and
the Ministry of Commerce. The harvest and sales of a particular unpolished riceberry was the focus of the 7-day event, also participated in by Shangri-La Hotel Bangkok, Blue Elephant Restaurant, S & P, HokkaiDon, I.S. International Super Food, and Q Restaurant. These partners created riceberry menus served to the guests and visitors during the event. The delightful menus that delighted guests at the event are now part of the partner-restaurant menus. We hope event will increase awareness and help spread the word about the health benefits of riceberry, so that the public will be encouraged to use eat them in their daily life.
