osh, the year is almost over – it’s the 10th month of the year already, and so far so good. Things are looking up brightly. t’s the beginning of the high season in Thailand, when all involved in the travel and hospitality industry expect to enjoy the some kind of a windfall in whatever they are involved in – and that includes us. Thanks to our friends and supporters, Lookeast is going from strength to strength, as the cliché goes, as you probably have

baby! It’s also the beginning of the fun season as suggested by the numerous happenings milling around us, and we don’t just mean the regular boat races and other annual cultural festivals although they sure make it all interesting for all of us. Bangkok alone is set on a more vibrant path -- with the opening of several new hotels, destinations in the kingdom, such as Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Phuket, and Samui are not about to be left behind; just check out their events calendar for solid proofs. Overall, we’ve been blessed with relative stability and certainty this year, and while some inevitable changes and minor distractions are surely bound to occur somewhere somehow, I think we can all sing some lines from that Oskar Hansen poem, which says, “Beautiful October…God has gone mainstream…” Yes, indeed. It’s not like we’re celebrating grandly and whimsically the birthdays of Dylan Thomas, e.e. cummings, or Pablo Picasso – all October birthday celebrators by the way – although they sure have inspired me to collect and raise high spirits this month – but we can only expect the avalanche of events to increase even more in the coming months, and make the Land of Smiles a truly memorable and unforgettable destination for all. featuring this month in the hope of spreading that spirit around. Indulge me to say that some interesting reading fare has been assembled in this month’s issue, to give you “what’s news, what’s now, what’s next,” really whatever matters to all of us interested or engaged in travel and lifestyle. May we help you enjoy your Thailand holiday more, and wherever you fancy a journey – safe travels everyone! From the entire team at Lookeast Magazine, Sawasdee Krub!

5-14 Vegetarian Festival

Not exactly an official festival, observance of the “Thailand Vegetarian Festival” usually for nine days, following the Chinese tradition that inspired it, although many Thai people observe it for as long as 10 days. The observance starts Oct 5 with some activities starting a day

or two before, and continuing a day after, depending on the temples and organizing committee involved. But perhaps the most popular observance is held in Phuket, where its takes the extreme form, bordering on the bizarre. The “Phuket Vegetarian Festival” has become a much-awaited event in the Thai calendar, because of the interest it generates from travelers here and abroad. for an auspicious alms-round. The day occurs after the last day of the Buddhist Lent period during which the monks and nuns were bound to stay each night in a single place. Tradition has it that the Buddha himself, during one of these three-month periods, had spent the time teaching high philosophy to his mother in a heavenly realm. When the period ended he came back down to earth via a triple staircase made of emerald, gold and silver. The people of the earth awaited him with almsround offerings. You can see the depiction of this event behind most Buddha images around central Thailand. The almsround is done in the morning, often by special arrangement with schools, businesses and temples. Mostly the event occurs around an hour after dawn, but you will need to check in your locality as there may well be special alms-rounds going on in the town. You don’t need to be a Buddhist to participate, and making an offering to the monks in the morning is part of the experience of Thailand. You can join an English language version of this ceremony at the more convenient time of 9:30 a.m. in Bangkok on Sukhumvit Soi 1, in Ariyasom Villa. Details are at www.littlebang.org

23 Chulalongkorn Day 18-19 Naga Fireball Festival

1-20 Deconstructing Burma Last month, Art In Effect Galleries unveiled an exhibition of contemporary art called “Deconstructing Burma,” which runs until Oct. 20. The collection consists entirely of paintings created by artists living in Myanmar. The artists, Tun T Lin, Khine Min So, Maung Myant Aung, K Kyaw, Min Yang Naung, and Zwe Yan Naing created the paintings in this collection while living under the former military controlled government. The collection is varied in subject matter. Some have political overtones; others focus on day-to-day life in a country that virtually marched in place, locked in turmoil for close to 50 years, while the rest of Southeast Asia moved forward. With a new government, lifted sanctions, and a new attitude of general openness towards the west, the subjects typified in these works of art are each in their own way a reflection of time, encapsulated on canvas as new ideas from the outside flood in and new perceptions from the inside begin to trickle out. The winner is the first player to use all their Story Cards and successfully finish the story with their version of the Ending. The object of the game, though, isn't just to win, but to tell a great story together. “Once Upon a Time” really is easy to learn (it's even recommended for children and ESL learners but even if you just fancy listening to a brand new, never before heard story, it will be well worth coming along. AN OFFICER AND A SPY By Robert Harris Synopsis: From the bestselling author of “Fatherland,” this is a gripping historical thriller in which the hunter becomes the hunted. January 1895. On a freezing morning in the heart of Paris, an army officer, Georges Picquart, witnesses a convicted spy, Captain Alfred Dreyfus, being publicly humiliated in front of twenty thousand spectators baying 'Death to the Jew!' The officer is rewarded with promotion: Picquart is made the French army's youngest colonel and put in command of 'the Statistical Section' - the shadowy intelligence unit that tracked down Dreyfus. The spy, meanwhile, is given a punishment of medieval cruelty: Dreyfus is shipped off to a lifetime of solitary confinement on Devil's Island - unable to speak to anyone, not even his guards, his case seems closed forever. But gradually Picquart comes to believe there is something rotten at the heart of the Statistical Section. When he discovers another German spy operating on French soil, his superiors are oddly reluctant to pursue it. Despite official warnings, Picquart persists, and soon the officer and the spy are in the same predicament...Narrated by Picquart, An Officer and a Spy is a compelling recreation of a scandal that became the most famous miscarriage of justice in history. Compelling, too, are the echoes for our modern world: an intelligence agency gone rogue, justice corrupted in the name of national security, a newspaper witch-hunt of a persecuted minority, and the age-old instinct of those in power to cover-up their crimes. Phuket’s Macabre Vegetarian Festival Story and Photos by Dave Stamboulis

P

huket, pearl of the Andaman. With four million visitors a year, Phuket conjures up images of fancy beach resorts, bacchanalian nightlife, and upscale malls. It certainly isn’t undiscovered. Many might even suggest it to be a paradise lost. However, Phuket is also host to one of Thailand’s best-kept secrets. Every year for nine days, the island erupts into a frenzy when locals take to the streets to celebrate one of the world’s most bizarre and macabre festivals, Ngaan Kin Jeh, or the "Vegetarian Festival." The "Phuket Vegetarian Festival" is celebrated starting on the first evening of the ninth lunar month each year. Its origins date back to 1825, when Phuket was still covered in dense jungle and Chinese miners worked its tin mines. A visiting Chinese opera company performing for the miners fell ill with malarial fever during their stay. The troupe then followed a strict vegetarian diet accompanied by a series of rituals honoring their emperor gods, and they recovered immediately. Locals, visibly impressed, sent volunteers back to China to study the rites, and the festival has been celebrated ever since. On the eve of the festival, a large pole is raised in each local temple, and the nine emperor gods are invited to descend from the heavens and take part in the ceremonies. At midnight, nine lanterns are hung on the poles, signifying that the festival has begun. Phuket Town becomes a sea of yellow and white; the yellow being banners put in front of restaurants showing that they serve only vegetarian food, and the white being clothing that the pilgrims will wear for the following week, showing the intention to remain pure and follow the precepts of the festival, which include abstinence from sex and alcohol and refraining from any kind of killing or eating of animals.

contact/ Thai FESTIVALS CULTURE

While the vegetarian food is delicious and the temples gaily decorated, most visitors keep their focus on the maa song, human devotees who go into trances and whom the gods possess during the festival. The maa song manifest supernatural powers and perform self-mutilations in order to take evil from individuals and to ensure good luck to the entire community. The maa song, aside from piercing their cheeks and other parts of their anatomy, also perform feats like bathing with hot oil, laying on beds of nails, and climbing bladed ladders. Each morning of the festival begins with street processions through Phuket. At dawn, one can find scores of young men thronging the inner sanctums of the temples, preparing themselves for self-mutilation. At the base of shrines, they go into trances, begin speaking in high tones, and don colorful aprons with Taoist symbols, looking on as doctors inflict cuts into both sides of their mouths. Once the incisions have been made, various sharp objects like knives and skewers are then inserted into their cheeks. However, many of the men seem to try to outdo each other with other items such as rifles, fishing rods, and parasols. One fellow walks with the nozzle of a gasoline pump through his face, while his friend journeys down the street with a full-size beach umbrella through both cheeks! All the shops and houses along the parade routes put tables out front, filled with fruit baskets, joss sticks, and Buddha images. The entranced are then invited to come bless each individual and their business as they pass. Despite the hideous appearance of a man with a two-meter spear protruding through both cheeks, eyes rolled back, and babbling incoherently, most folks don’t flinch when he approaches, as they fold their hands in prayer, wai the maa song, and happily receive his blessings. As the spirit mediums walk through the streets, young men carrying miniature shrines run alongside. The shrine carriers are swathed in towels to prevent being burned from the ensuing blasts. The shrines are filled with fireworks, which explode like

gunpowder when spectators toss entire lit packs of their own into the shrines as they come past. At times the entire scene resembles something far more out of a war zone than a festival. Perhaps the most popular event of Ngaan Kin Jeh is that of fire-walking, which takes place in the Saphan Hin stadium near the sea. Blazing coals are flamed, raked, and turned for hours, in preparation for the teams of entranced men, who gyrate and crack whips to the accompaniment of loud drums, preparing themselves for walking across the hot embers. While most of the men show at least some sense of mortality, dashing across the coals as quickly as they can, others strut leisurely, without a care in the world. In either case, the participants neither show a burn nor even blemish on their feet after the event! As the week progresses, the street processions become crazier, the noise more thunderous, and the devotees more outlandish in their mutilations. Groups of men swing hatchets, machetes, and spiked balls across their backs, whipping themselves in a mad frenzy. Women too get into the fray as the festival draws to a close, performing the same acts of facial shish-kebab as the men. Women often are spirit mediums for the child gods, and they can be seen skipping through the streets sucking lollipops or with their thumbs in their mouths. On the final night of the festival, the fireworks are deafening, and the entire town makes its way out to the sea. The shrines of the emperor gods are loaded into boats and launched adrift, while a monstrous bonfire is lit onshore, and soon the flames are all that remains. The following morning, the debris of ash that engulfs the town is swept up, the restaurants start serving meat again, people put on colorful clothes, and Phuket goes back to being a tourist resort. The city of Trang and some surrounding communities also celebrate their own versions of the "Vegetarian Festival," but Phuket gets the honor of holding the biggest and most outlandish. A visit to this macabre and bizarre event gives an entire new meaning to the term,"vegetarian." The Phuket Vegetarian Festival will take place Oct. 4-14, 2013 ď Ž october 2013 | 19

attractions Historical Parks You can’t do them in day or a week – but then, even if you have time to visit just one of these parks that would already be commendable; take your pick! By Harold Stephens

F

irst, let me say that historical objects and sites are a testimony to every country's cultural heritage. They serve to bridge the gap between past and present, and instill in the people a sense of belonging, pride, and the importance of cherishing their invaluable legacy. In April 1987, the government officially opened Thailand's first historical park, the Muang Sing Historical Park in Kanchanaburi. Today, 10 historical parks have been opened - three of which have received the honor of being designated World Heritage Sites. The 10 historical parks are presented below. They are the result of hard work of the Fine Arts Department in the excavation, renovation and landscaping for several decades. Each of these parks is now equipped with a tourist and information centre and provides qualified guides.

AYUTTHAYA HISTORICAL PARK

From the 14th to 18th centuries, Ayutthaya was the capital of the central Thai Kingdom for 417 years. With influences from Dvaravati, Khmer, Mon, and Lawa cultures, Ayutthaya was able to create its own arts and culture from a delicate blend of those cultures. During the reigns of 33 kings, Ayutthaya gave Thailand a great number of fine buildings, monuments and works of art. It was selected as a World Heritage Site in 1994. An annual festival, “Ayutthaya World Heritage Day,” is held in December within the historical park.

KAMPHAENG PHET HISTORICAL PARK

Khamphaeng Phet was an important city of the Sukhothai Kingdom from the 13th to 15th centuries. The earliest mention of the city appears in the stone inscriptions from Wat Mahathat and Wat Phra Sri in Kamphaeng Phet. The Ayutthaya annuals mention that this city was known as "Muang Chakangrau" and was ruled by a prince from Sukhothai. Cultural and folk festivities are held in April each year to celebrate the “Nop Phra Len Pleng Festival.”

SI SATCHANALAI HISTORICAL PARK

A satellite town of the Sukhothai era, Si Satchanalai is located on the banks of Yom River, 50km from modern Sukhothai. Ruins of 134 monuments have been discovered in the park. The city plan was laid out along fixed cosmological lines - temple complexes lay at its heart, surrounded by city walls, rivers and forest. It is considered by many historians to be the apogee of Thai city planning. On account of its relation to the Kingdom of Sukhothai, it was selected to be on the World Heritage List in 1990. The annual “Songkran Festival” is held in April within the historical park itself and throughout the province.

PHU PHRA BAT HISTORICAL PARK

The park is situated on the Phu Phra Bat hill of Phu Phan Mountain. There are 62 archaeological and cultural sites offering prehistoric rock paintings from about 4,000 to 2,000 years ago. There are also many historical artifacts from Dvaravati and Khmer cultures. Within the historical park is also the site of a stupa constructed during the 1920s, and a Buddha's footprint.

PREHISTORIC SITES

Thailand also has its own species of dinosaur and distinctive neolithic cave paintings. The best place to visit is the northeastern plateau because this region offers the greatest variety with easy access. Just 59km from Udon Thani, for example, lies the world-famous village of Ban Chiang with its marvelous pottery.

PHRA NAKHON KHIRI HISTORICAL PARK

Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park is in Phetchaburi Province, an important satellite city of Ayutthaya. Commonly called Khao Wang (the palace on the mountain), it was built on top of Samana mountain as a summer palace for King Rama IV. Within the park area are royal halls, temples and groups of buildings, constructed in harmonious Thai, Western neoclassic and Chinese architectural styles. The museum on the western hilltop exhibits some royal paraphernalia of King Rama IV and King Rama V, decorative sculptures, and ceramics from China, Japan and Europe. To reach the hilltop, one can either walk or take a cable car. The “Phra Nakhon Khiri Fair” is held each year with lots of activities to promote tourism to the site and a trade fair of local handicrafts.

PHANOM RUNG HISTORICAL PARK

The Northeast includes many historical monuments in the Khmer style from prehistoric times to the 13th century. Among these, Prasat Hin Khao Phanom Rung is one of the most important. This is the only Khmer religious monument constructed on a natural mountain. Restorations have made a great contribution to the study of Khmer architecture in Thailand. A special festival is “Phanom Rung Fair,” held either in March or April each year

MUANG SING HISTORICAL PARK

This is one of the most important sites in the Kwai Noi River basin in Kanchanaburi. Prehistoric human skeletons have been discovered near the ancient city, together with metal tools, vessels and ornaments, bricks, foundations of Dvaravati period architecture and laterite ruins from the 13th century. The remains of the ancient city comprise several layers of rectangular walls and a moat. The annual festival within the historical park is the "Thin Buri Sri Chai Sing" featuring a light and sound show and classical dances.

PHIMAI HISTORICAL PARK

The largest stone monument in the Northeast is Prasat Hin Phimai in Phimai Historical Park. It was erected for the practice of Mahayana Buddhism in the early 12th century. This particular monument became the prototype of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, which makes it of even greater historical and aesthetic importance. An annual “Phimai Festival” within the historical park is held in November. Festivities include a special light and sound show and classical dances.

SRI THEP HISTORICAL PARK

The large ancient city of Sri Thep in the Pasak River basin served as a centre of communications between the cities in central Thailand and those in the North and Northeast for a long period. Archaeological excavations conducted in the Pasak and Lopburi river basins have revealed that highly-developed prehistoric cultures flourished with more advanced technology than that of any other sites in neighboring areas. october 2013 | 21

A Siam Society Study Trip Nakhon Pathom A Revisit After 90 years Sunday, 17 November 2013

Honorary Member and former President of the Siam Society Leader: Dr. Piriya Krairiksh

N

inety years ago, on Sunday 18th November 1923, the Siam Society organized a group of nearly 70 members to visit Nakhon Pathom for the first time. At that time there was no good road linking Bangkok with Nakhon Pathom, so the group had to go by train. On this trip 90 years later we will be able to go by road. Nakhon Pathom city is reputed to be Thailand’s oldest city, dating back to the Dvaravati period (6th – 11th century). However, for most people the main attraction of this city is Phra Pathom Chedi. Standing 127 meters high it is the tallest Buddhist monument in the world, and is a few feet higher than the Shwedagon Chedi in Myanmar. It is believed that the first chedi on this site was erected in the 6th century, but the large chedi we see today

22

was built in 1860, and encases the ruins of the original. It also marks the first centre of Buddhist learning on the Thai peninsula. For several decades Nakhon Pathom has been an important site for investigations by Thai and foreign scholars. Today, the importance of Nakhon Pathom in the early history of Thailand is well recognized because of the large number of archaeological remains found there – ruins of chedis or stupa foundations, large and small stone and bronze sculptures, terracotta and stucco artefacts, stone inscriptions, stone “Wheels of the Law” and a stele representing the Buddha preaching, a large number of votive tablets, etc. New archaeological discoveries have been made and excavations are being carried out. How much do we know about this? How much

information is available in the museum and where are those ancient ruins are located, etc.? Hopefuly, these questions will be answered on this trip. Dr. Piriya Krairiksh, art historian from Harvard University, a senior research scholar by the Thailand Research Fund, author of the book “The Roots of Thai Art”, former Director of Thai Khadi Institute, Honorary member and former President of the Siam Society, will lead Society members to study arts, history and archaeology of Nakhon Pathom. Members will spend all day visiting museums and many archaeological sites in Nakhon Pathom province. The group will depart by bus from the Siam Society at 8:00 a.m. and is expected to return to the Society on the same day at 6:30 p.m. A contribution of Bt. 1,850 per person (Bt.2,050 for non-members) will cover transportation, entrance fees to museums and monuments, lunch, a donation to the Siam Society, and all arrangements to make the trip possible. Please pay by cash or cheque (payable to ‘The Siam Society’). Alternatively you can deposit/transfer the money to the Siam Society travel account at the Thai Military Bank, Asoke Branch saving account no. 053-2-18000-7. Please fax or e-mail the deposit or transfer docket to us. There is a 4% surcharge for credit/ debit card payment to cover bank charges. The Siam Society reserves the right to change the programme as necessary. Seats are limited. Please book your place as soon as possible. For further information and bookings please contact Khun Prasert (ext.504) or Khun Ekkarin (ext.506) on 0-2661-6470-7 or e-mail: ekkarin@siamsociety.org. Office hours: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday (except holidays). 

mini-guide Pai and Away Increasing visitor numbers have failed to dampen the peaceful spirit of this small, laidback tourist town in Mae Hong Son By Percy roxas

T

his small town, situated within a laidback valley surrounded by steep mountains between Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son, is one of my favorite retreats. Nobody knows how this former best-kept tourism secret became a popular tourist destination that it is today. But Pai attracts primarily because of its relatively “isolated from the outside world” setting. Part of the lure of course, is that it is a part of Mae Hong Son, the “Shangri-La” of Thailand, and the fabled “land of three mists” near the Myanmar border. It is renowned for its natural beauty, eclectic ethnic culture, lush jungle greens, and their appurtenant wonders. The town was the traditional habitat of the Shan people (ethnic Tai whose and while it thrives on tourism these days, it is still -- in general -- a tranquil little town with small quiet pleasures. Pai, Mae HoNG soN DestINatIoNs to DIscover

WHY GO Pai is a perfect haven for those in search of peaceful mountain retreats. The weather is temperate, natural and cultural wonders are a-plenty, and the surrounding is conducive to utter relaxation and recharging. A good reason to go is to experience the great

white water rafting adventure down the Pai River. If you are not after the adventurous rush, the generally relaxed atmosphere of the place that backpackers loved in the area when they “discovered” it in the late 80s,

SEE & DO Pai is endowed with many natural wonders and attractions: waterfalls, gorges, caves, and hot springs. The waterfalls and hot springs vary in temperature from 80 to 200 degrees Celsius in the outskirts of town, and some resorts tap the hot springs and feed the hot water into spas, private bungalows, and public pools. Again, the most popular activity is white water rafting at the Pai River, the longest river in Mae Hong Son, and famous for its series of rapids dancing along to scenic gorges. On the town itself, the quaint magic of Pai made it appealing to visitors of all kinds: the young and the young-atheart, the arty type, and more, besides those looking for peace and quiet in their holiday. Pai’s location at the foot of the mountains also make it an ideal base for trekking and visiting hill tribes such as the Karen, Hmong, Lisu, and Lahu. Another notable attraction is the Wednesday Market, which brings large and colorful crowds of local villagers and tribal people from all around the Pai Valley. SLEEP The number of guesthouses and hotels in Pai continues to increase in recent years and most of them can be booked online whether you are looking for a budget guesthouse or a relatively full-service boutique hotel there yet. EAT & DRINK As is anywhere in Thailand, there is an abundance of food and drink places for all kinds of tastes in Pai. Your own accommodation will probably have a restaurant or two, but

Moreover, this city captured fourth place as the “2013 Top Cities for Business.” “Compared to its rivals, such as other capital cities in Asean, Bangkok is a versatile city, able to capture various needs of travelers and offering a variety of traveling experiences to visitors,” said Sugree Sithivanich of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). “For instance, in the heart of this city, you can enjoy shopping and eating out in upscale restaurants in Siam Square and the surrounding area while in the next 30 minutes, you may find a peaceful moment by visiting the temples along the Chao Phraya River. This is the charisma of Bangkok.” Smart Travel Asia spokesperson said that according to their survey, people would rather travel to do business here; however, they increasingly prefer to come for leisure like shopping particularly IT items and enjoy the nightlife, too. Moreover, golf and medical packages including spas have become an emerging activity drawing luxury travelers. Not only Bangkok but also the renowned seaside destinations of Phuket and Koh Samui were a hit on the list as well. Phuket, the Pearl of the Andaman, was ranked as third in the poll while Koh Samui was voted ninth in the 2013 Best Holiday Destination.

Global hotel prices rise to levels not seen since 2006

Bangkok --The average price of a hotel room around the world rose by two percent during the first six months of 2013 compared with the same period the previous year, according to the latest Hotels.com Hotel Price Index (HPI). The rise, although relatively small, maintained a trend of slowly increasing rates seen since the start of 2010, with average prices now close to their 2006 levels, before the global financial crisis began. Set at 100 in 2004, the HPI tracks real prices that hotel guests actually paid for their accommodation around the world. The Index for the first six months of 2013 stands at 111, eight points lower than its peak in the same period of 2007 and just 11 points higher than at its launch. Latin America registered its strongest result for more than two years with a seven percent increase in hotel prices. Helped by the strengthening U.S. economy, North America, and the Caribbean outperformed the global average with increases of three percent and five percent respectively. In the Pacific, the slump in the Australian mineral resources industry led to a fall in the number of business travelers and weaker rate growth of one percent. With the Eurozone only just officially out of recession, hotel prices in Europe and the Middle East remained sluggish, also recording a one percent gain. David Roche, President Global

Lodging Group for the Expedia group, said: "There is no doubt that European hotel prices have been some of the most badly affected since the economic fallout in 2008/2009. The fact that the Eurozone recorded growth for the first two quarters of 2013 is evidence that the economic crisis is easing, although not yet over. However, many of the destinations worst hit by the downturn have seen hotel prices stabilize, with some experiencing healthy rises." Asia was the only region to see a fall in prices by two percent in the first half of 2013. Individual cities in the region performed well but the depreciation in value of the yen and the rupee, coupled with a fall in the number of inbound visitors to China contributed to this result. However, outbound travel from China has not been impacted by slowdown in the country’s economy and continued to boom.

Timeless Tea Trails in the Mekong Region

Bangkok -- Tea ceremonies are synonymous with Asian service as the ultimate act of welcome. Through the “SilverNeedle Collection Afternoon Tea Experience,” this timeless tradition comes alive and brings a new era of grace and elegance to the historic destinations of Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Luang Prabang. SilverNeedle Collection’s six premium blends of tea are testament to the bonds that afternoon tea has brought together over the centuries, as well as the long voyage that they took to arrive in South East Asia. Served in the Northern Lanna capital Chiang Mai at 137 Pillars House, on the historic Rattanakosin Island in Bangkok at Riva Surya, and in the former French colonial town of Luang Prabang at Kiridara, the blends chosen reflect the foundation of tea growing in Thailand and Laos, first introduced from China in the 14th century using Formosa Teas. Following an evolution in the tea trades through the

first Western contact with the Portuguese, the Europeans and the British gradually took to drinking tea in the 17th century, culminating in the exquisite experience of the afternoon tea. In launching its Afternoon Tea experience, SilverNeedle Collection Hotels have crafted menus with a combination of local delicacies and regional teas, to showcase the service that has become a hallmark of excellence throughout the brand. They extend the graciousness and warmth of diverse Asian cultures to create lasting memories for guests. The SilverNeedle Collection Afternoon Tea Experience is available to hotel guests and visitors of SilverNeedle Collection Hotels. They can indulge in a three-tier-curate stand filled with freshly prepared savory sandwiches and pastries paired with sweet desserts and cakes. During the introductory period from now till Oct. 31, guests staying a minimum of three nights on SilverNeedle Daily Rates will receive a complimentary Afternoon Tea Experience during their stay.

tale of the tape S. African arrivals rising steadily 77,000 visitors expected this year Visitor Arrivals from South Africa 2006-2013 By Imtiaz Muqbil, Executive Editor,

www.travel-impact- newswire.com

S

outh Africa is one of Thailand’s most important emerging source markets. For the past few years, arrivals from South Africa have been rising steadily. In 2006, Thailand welcomed a total of 43,444 South African visitors. By 2012, they had risen to 73,530. The only year they declined was in 2009, when arrivals dropped by 12.55% to 40,465 due to political disturbances in Thailand. In 2013, the Tourism Authority of Thailand is expecting 77,000 visitors from South Africa, generating 5.1 billion baht for tourism revenue. According to the TAT marketing brief, Thailand is one of the top three long haul destinations for South Africans, along with Mauritius and Europe. There is also increasing interest in China, but that also benefits Thailand as many visitors include a stop in Bangkok on their way to China. Moreover, South African visitors get a 30-day visa-free stay in Thailand.

Tourism Revenue in 2012 In 2012, visitors from South Africa stayed an average of 12.44 days, while their average daily expenditure was 5,189.42 baht (US$166.97) per person. This generated about 4,746.84 billion baht (US$152.73 million) tourism exchange revenue to the Thai economy.

Aviation Linkages On aviation front, as of September 2013, there were only three direct scheduled flights weekly between Johannesburg and Bangkok, operated by Thai Airways International. In addition, there are several connecting flights through various destinations by Kenya Airways, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines and Air Mauritius.

Other interesting details Popular tourist attractions for South African travellers in Thailand are Bangkok, Phuket, Samui and Krabi. Increasingly, they are venturing beyond to new destinations such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Koh Chang. Most favourite products and services are art and culture, sports, adventure tourism, beaches, health & wellness and shopping. According to the TAT marketing brief, travelling abroad is largely undertaken by affluent South Africans, especially to longhaul destinations. Approximately one in ten South Africans travel abroad each year, although holiday and leisure travel is only one part of the market. Visiting friends and relatives (VFR) and business travel are both important components. Long-haul leisure travel is very seasonal in South Africa, with trends being mostly school holidays, and the months August and December being the most popular period. One rapidly growing segment is the previously disadvantaged South African indigenous groups who are taking advantage of the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) programme launched by the SA government to rectify the inequalities of apartheid. This has seen the growth in the social economic status of many black South Africans, creating an affluent market fondly referred to as ‘Black Diamonds’. The creation of the ASEAN Economic in 2015 will lead to an increase in business and convention travel to Thailand and the region in general.  october 2013 | 35

New Tourist Attractions in Hua Hin

L

By Imtiaz Muqbil, Executive Editor,

www.travel-impact- newswire.com

ocated about 200 kilometres south of Bangkok, Hua Hin is the country’s oldest beach resort, having been popularised as the summer retreat of the Thai Royal Family in the 1920s. According to Ministry of Tourism and Sports figures, Hua Hin welcomed 3.08 million visitors in 2011, an increase of 25.83% over the year 2010. Visitors had an average length of stay of 3.50 days and an average daily expenditure of Bt2,187 per person, generating tourism revenues of Bt17,318 million. Hua Hin has a wide range of attractions and activities. Although best known for its long, white sandy beaches, Hua Hin also boasts numerous world-class golf courses, several Buddhist temples, bustling local markets, outstanding restaurants, and numerous spas, and health and wellness resorts. Historic attractions include the Old Palace, the old Hua Hin Railway Station, and other heritage buildings. In the last 12 months, a number of new attractions have emerged in the city and its environs, including a vineyard, balloon-rides, night markets and sheep-farms. They have enhanced the appeal of the resort and will go a long way towards adding to the daily expenditure patterns and average length of stay. In September, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) released a Thai-language brochure identifying these new attractions. Although the information was dedicated to attracting the domestic market, it has been translated and repackaged for the benefit of foreign visitors, especially Lookeast readers. Some additional info has been sourced from the websites. Hope it helps you enjoy your stay in Amazing Thailand.

This incredible flight provides a spectacular panoramic view of the Gulf of Thailand, Hua Hin coastline and the lush-green surrounding mountains. Some hotels that offer a stylish, fashionable fresh take by design and make travel to Thailand even more unforgettable

C

By Percy Roxas

all them “hip,” call them “boutique,” or lump them together under the genre, “design” -- but whatever we call them these hotels are the “in” places to stay. And, despite the changing trends – some hotel design experts are saying that yesterday’s “cool” hotels are now being replaced by “cozy (read: comfort and functionality)” -- they are the veritable hotspots that discerning modern travelers from around the world are presently gravitating around to for their holiday homes in Thailand. Many of these properties are seriously stylish. Some are luxuriously cool and classic, while others deliberately and “minimalistically” hip. But almost all can be considered among the most fashionable hotels in Bangkok today. Fabulous hotspots, indeed. Truth be said, there are so many hotels in Thailand that boasts dramatic design, distinctive architecture, and overall artistic sensibility; and therefore make the task of listing just a few a bit challenging. But in the spirit of our “Style” theme this month, Lookeast essays a cross-section of hotels that redefine the experiences of discerning travelers with these parameters above all. One hotel design expert said it succinctly: ‘It is not just about designing a place (hotel) anymore. It is about designing an experience!” Without prejudice to the many other stylish, fashionable hotels and resorts around the country, the following places give us just that!

KRABI

SRI PANWA

Sri panwa Phuket is a seriously stylish resort made more seductive by the breathtaking views of the Southeastern Andaman Sea, and making it a consistent easy bet for the “Best Resort in Most Natural Environment” awards. Staying at the resort, one becomes at a loss for superlatives – but glamorous, fabulous, and stunning are among the most common descriptions. Indeed, the 60-villa resort – with its interiors that embrace the essence of Tropical Contemporary design -- integrate its natural surroundings with the modern comforts of luxury living. The villas are designed to feel like private homes, and thus guests enjoy the finest bed linens, customized toiletries, gourmet mini-bars, and traditional handcrafted furnishings. The entire resort is meant to satisfy those in need of occasional glam-fun escapes. My kind of place indeed. Address: Sri panwa Phuket, 88 Moo 8, Sakdidej Road, Vichit, Muang, Phuket; Tel: 076 637-1000; E-mail: chill@sripanwa.com

AMANPURI

“Is there an Amanpuri out of place with its surroundings?” A fan of the resort rhetorically asks one time. Most of us who know hotels and resorts know the answer: “none.” Amanpuri Phuket, a flagship property of the Amanresorts, was designed with much thought and concern about its surroundings indeed. The graceful architecture of the pavilions and villas – set in a coconut plantation on a headland overlooking the Andaman – reflect the style and elegance of Thai culture. The trademark Aman mixture of authentic architecture, supreme comfort and impeccable service remained largely unaltered since the resort's opening in 1988. Contemporary and yet very Thai, an amazing example of Asian tropical resort design that has been imitated but never equaled. A true “place of peace” as its name implies – awaiting those in search of true luxurious pampering during their holidays. Address: Amanpuri, Pansea Beach, Phuket; Tel: 076 324-333; e-mail amanpuri@amanresorts.com

INDIGO PEARL PHUKET

The design concept is on bold luxury, raw sensuality, and industrial chic. In a worldof-its-own way, Indigo Pearl Phuket seduces against a dense rainforest filled with rare wildlife and sheltered shore of golden sand and uninterrupted views of the Andaman Sea. Wichit Na-Ranong, owner and managing director of the award-winning resort used tin mining – once the main industry in Phuket – to realize a personal vision that is unique. Historic details and surreal twists meet Thai warmth: rough timber and sleek polished metal, sun-kissed beaches and a palette of ochre and rouge. And expanses of lush green are punctuated by striking objets d’art. As many describe it, Indigo Pearl is a striking, poetic reminder of the raw beauty, vision, and richness of a bygone Phuket era. Address: Nai Yang Beach and National Park, Phuket; Tel: 076 327 006; E-mail info@indigo-pearl.com

THE NAKA ISLAND

An exclusive boutique resort on Naka Yai Island just off the Phuket coast, this resort is nestled among stunning beaches, lush coconut groves, with neverending views of the emerald-green Phang Nga Bay and idyllic landscapes of the Phuket coastline. The 67 magnificently appointed villas, most with spectacular views over Phang Nga Bay and Phuket, are furnished in refined Thai décor that it is easy to describe them as “haven of sophistication and sublime comfort in an evocative setting.” Address: The Naka Island Phuket, 32 Moo 5, Tambol Paklok, Naka Yai Island, Phuket; Tel: 076 371-400 october 2013 | 41

THE LIBRARY

Someone who loved “to see things close to her rather than look farther to nowhere” designed the Library. She saw how travelers everywhere spend hours and hours reading on the beach, by the pool, at the restaurant and thought – “to complete one good vacation, what else do you expect, apart from a nice room, delicious meals with good ambience: one good book, memorable movies, and music in style?” From that idea, was The Library born. The result was a relaxing place where fine collections of books, movies and music are available for guests’ entertaining pleasure but at the same time very cosmopolitan, hip, and trendy. Address: The Library Koh Samui, 14/1 Moo.2 Chaweng Beach; Tel. 077 422-767/8; e-mail: rsvn@ thelibrary.co.th

BANGKOK HOTEL MUSE

Drumbeaters said the hotel was “inspired by the social and artistic milieu of fin de siècle Europe and King Rama V-era Thailand»”and indeed one is amazed at how it combines cosmopolitan chic with playful period elegance. Hotel Muse’s lobby is quite dramatic -- to say the least, perfect for the kind of check-in we sometimes seek. There is a sense of exclusivity, a sense of the discreetness that even Garbo, running away from the paparazzi, will love. Fabrics, the subtle colors, the ornate picture frames, even the staff uniforms -- in fact, every detail of the interior -- suggests cosmopolitan panache and good taste. The feeling of opulence is everywhere. All the way into your room, classic European influences are juxtaposed against a charming collage of Asian motifs. All the 174 rooms and suites are spacious, and lavishly designed with a heightened period feel. As one recent guest said, “It’s a luxurious and unique base – but very welcoming -from where to explore one of the world’s most liberal cities.” Address: Hotel Muse Bangkok Langsuan, 55/555 Langsuan Rd, Bangkok; Tel: 02 630-4000; e-mail: H7174@accor.com

ARIYASOM VILLA

Designed around the 1940s and 50s Bangkok theme, this hotel is well appointed with local and imported materials: old recycled teak floors, antique and reproduction furniture, Thai silk drapes, and the like – giving it a unique personality that matches its pedigree. The hotel is owned by the descendants of Phra Charoen -- the first and the longest serving dean of the Chulalongkorn University faculty of engineering and the father of Thai modern engineers – and his wife, and in fact the main house was their private residence during WWII. His granddaughter Pariya Sheanakul and her English husband, David Lees, were responsible for developing this heritage architecture “in it's best environment and spirit.” The lush tropical gardens are a welcome reprieve from the bustling, busy city outside the gates. Address: Ariyasom Villa, 65 Sukhumvit Soi 1, Bangkok; Tel: 02-254 8880/3; E-mail: info@ariyasom.com

LUXX HOTEL

Still one of the most underrated hotels in the city, this one can spring a surprise especially those used to staying with hotel without any personality at all. Guestrooms that feature chrome and wood furnishings and Zen-like decoration, endearing wooden bathtubs big enough for two (including a rain shower that adds an extra touch of flair to the overall minimalist simplicity), luxury beds, and wonderful timber flooring -- these are just some of the surprises in store at this supposedly budget class hotel that reeks of so much luxury. Address: 6/11 Decho St (Silom), Bangrak, Bangkok; Tel: 02-635-8800

SOFITEL SO

So urbane, so Bangkok, so connected. When it opened, Sofitel So Bangkok promised a 30-storey urban design hotel that defies trend forecasts. The hotel was created by a reputable Thai architect and five Thai interior designers, and linked to French elegance by Christian Lacroix, although not a few are more amused than awed by the design, especially the exterior. The 238 rooms and suites are inspired by the Five Elements; Water, Earth, Wood, Metal and Fire, and feature Apple® Mac mini with fully integrated entertainment and guest services; enhanced with the latest iPad in all suites. Address: 2 North Sathorn Rd; Tel: 02 6240000; e-mail: H6835@sofitel.com

Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Center At Centralworld

A resort with a charm all of its own is CENTARA GRAND BEACH RESORT PHUKET. Set directly on the sands at Karon Beach, the resort takes its design inspiration from the classic 19th century Sino-Portuguese style shophouses that are so characteristic of Phuket Town, and gives them a modern makeover. The resort is set around a water park and has a mix of rooms, suites and villas, all facing the ocean. Many of the accommodations offer the choice of a Jacuzzi or a plunge pool on the balcony. The resort is family friendly as well as providing unrivalled comfort for couples, with the choice of a king bed or two double beds in most room types. Other hotels in Thailand to check-out in for their delightful design and structure: Le Fenix Sukhumvit, Le Meridien Bangkok, Sofitel Sukhumvit, Metropolitan Bangkok, S15 Sukhumvit Hotel, Siam@Siam, TENFACE, The Lit Bangkok, Vie Hotel Bangkok, Hansar Bangkok, and the newcomers that are really changing the face of Bangkok hotels; Bangkok Marriott Sukhumvit, DoubleTree by Hilton, Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok, and the iconic W Bangkok. Indeed, the list is getting longer and longer. 

Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin

GRAND DESIGNS FOR CENTARA HOTELS There is no doubt about it – Thailand’s hotels are becoming more daring and more dramatic in design terms, as the tourism industry becomes bigger at the top end of the market, and the number of premium brands in the country increases. Centara Hotels & Resorts has been leading this surging trend for several years. Here are some proofs:

Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket

CENTARA GRAND & BANGKOK CONVENTION CENTER AT CENTRALWORLD, in the heart of Bangkok, is a prominent example, with its lotus-inspired tower rising 55 floors above the streets, the petals of the blossoming flower illuminated at night and providing a setting for Red Sky, the hotel’s dramatic rooftop restaurant and bar, which has outdoor and indoor seating and provides breathtaking views of the city. In Pattaya, CENTARA GRAND MIRAGE BEACH RESORT broke new ground in the hospitality business when it opened in late 2009. Designed to a Lost World theme, its two towers resemble the face of a cliff, linked by bridges and surrounded by large waterfalls. Its grand entry lobby stands like a giant cave 15m-tall with open sight lines to the seafront across a jungle-like water park, with a meandering river and multiple water slides. The resort was the first-ever themed hotel in Thailand. In the past few years it has become an enormously successful destination resort and a major reason why many people come to Pattaya. On the beachfront at Hua Hin is a Centara resort hotel that predates the founding of the company by many decades, but which has been modernized with such sensitivity that it is regarded as a classic hotel of Asia, and has recently been included as a member of the Leading Hotels of the World. CENTARA GRAND BEACH RESORT & VILLAS HUA HIN was originally opened in 1923 as the Railway Hotel, built when the railway line from Bangkok to Malaysia was completed, and as such it was the first resort hotel in Thailand. Designed in colonial style, the hotel today retains its atmosphere of an elegant age, and its rooms and villas, as well as its restaurants and meetings rooms, evoke this long-gone era while providing everything that today's traveler may desire.

Stylish Hotel Offers Truly Rewarding Stay

H

Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok is perfect for business and leisure travelers alike By Percy Roxas

ilton Sukhumvit Bangkok was designed with an underlying fictional love story concept, our guide tells us, as we enter the door of this sleek, stylish new hotel on Sukhumvit 24. She pointed us to the two sculpted figures in the lobby area, showing the “lovers” as they were apparently about to start their journey. Great conversational stuff as the fictional couple’s story is, however, they are mere sidelights to what this luxuriously modernistic hotel aims for: to provide consistent, professional, efficient hotel service – with a heart. Very Hilton, indeed. In fact, the opening of Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok -- in the heart of prestigious Sukhumvit, one of Bangkok’s most central business and entertainment districts – is a tacit reaffirmation of the Hilton Worldwide’s commitment to the group’s growing presence in the

country. Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok is the ninth Hilton Worldwide hotel in the kingdom. At first glance, you might think Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok is just another of the mushrooming design-oriented contemporary hotels in the city. The feel and atmosphere at the lobby is totally young, warm, and laidback, in keeping with the new lobbycum-social hub trend attuned with the changing hotel guest demographics. It’s easy to feel at home sitting in the lobby alone. When you start walking around, you realize the hotel is indeed not meant to be just a home-away-from home; it’s meant to be a home away from work. I mean, the hotel offers relaxing “distractions” from our daily routines. The restaurants are modernistic, and fresh culinary concepts are reflected in the two specialty restaurants: Scalini and Mondo.

Scalini, the hotel’s main dining area, serves 1920s-inspired, fine ItalianAmerican food (see related review in our Wine & Dine section) while Mondo takes inspiration from the Mediterranean and serves tapas and antipasto style dishes in a casual setting. Especially tempting are the delights from the charcuterie meat and cheese tower; and the barista bar keeps diners refreshed with fresh coffee. These two dining venues are certainly two welcome additions to the city’s new breed of sophisticated, world-class eateries. Three meeting rooms in a New York penthouse-styled living area called The Summit are equipped with state-of-the-art audio-visual and VIP business amenities, and feature innovative dining concepts. Business travelers can host interactive meetings here. There are actually seven meeting spaces, all inspired by New York penthouses -- with no detail left to chance, as even a casual observer will notice. My room on the 9th floor is a good example of how all the 280 spacious guestrooms are designed with guests in mind. There are six room types, the highlights being the suites with optional Executive floor privileges. Mine is obviously geared for a solo business-type, judging from the room size. It suits my needs (not much for an overnight stay, anyway) just fine. It’s spacious enough to unwind and rest, although there’s a working table if I get the itch to catch up on some work or keep myself connected with the outside world. Of course, I can also get connected at the Executive Lounge, where guests usually start their day with complimentary breakfast or chill-out when the sun sets. Wi-Fi and office support is free, as is in all public areas, although not necessarily in the rooms. My favorite place at the hotel is the Lapse, the rooftop infinity pool, which simply wows with its sweeping views of the Bangkok’s skyline. I really relished the time I spent lounging at the pool bar, although I did wish I had more time to enjoy their fully equipped, 24-hour Precor gym. If you want to be among the first to experience this stylish new hotel, make a reservation now as the hotel currently offers a “1,000 HHonors Points Per Night” promotion, which rewards guests with 1,000 HHonors points per night for rooms booked for a minimum of two-night stay from now till Nov. 30. Membership to Hilton HHonors is free and applications are given you when you check in. As a participant in the guest loyalty program, you may earn and redeem Hilton HHonors points. Gold and Diamond HHonors members also receive free breakfast and Wi-Fi connection in their guestrooms. Conveniently situated 300m from the BTS Phrom Phong skytrain station, Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok provides unparalleled reach to the most popular landmarks and attractions in the city; it is indeed a perfect base for business and leisure travelers alike. 

Ideal Mode for Savvy Travelers

Mode Sathorn Bangkok makes sure that every aspect of the guest’s experience is attuned with today's vibes and values

M

By Percy Roxas

ost hotels boasts of friendly service, but Mode Hotel -- says hotel manager Roland Aung – wants to be your friend. And indeed, while the new hotel on Sathorn Road is positioning itself as the city’s first “fashionable lifestyle hotel,” it is the friendliness of the staff that one will remember first when reminiscing their stay at the hotel. Of course, the “hardware” of Mode Sathorn is impressive. The overall ambience is classy and in-vogue, and the hotel offers all the flexibility and flair that modern urban lifestyles require. From the contemporary building design to the chic interiors, from the trendy facilities to the high-tech mod cons and amenities, this hotel will certainly attract the young sophisticated, tech savvy travelers who are plugged in the wired world of today. But let’s face it: all modern hotels try to do the same thing.

Mode Sathorn may indeed look a notch hipper than some new design-oriented hotels mushrooming around Bangkok, but in the end, every hotel is judged – even if subjectively -- by its “software”: the guest service it provides. And this is why Mode Sathorn stands out. “Our guest experience is exceptionally immersive,” says Roland, who epitomizes the very friendliness of the hotel team. “From the rooms, which are fashionably and indulgently appointed to the restaurants, bar and spa, which revolve around original concepts. We make sure that every aspect of the guest experience, from the design to the services and amenities, are uniquely in-tune with the vibes and values of today’s guests.” The hotel, which had a soft-run since May, has 201 rooms and suites that are ready to meet the requirements of both business and leisure travelers. The hotels appeals equally to both male and female guests, with its rich use of purple and pink, especially in the exterior, sending a strong signal to women that the hotel is on the same wavelength with them as it is with male guests. There are five categories of rooms: Business Suites, Deluxe (with four designs), Executive, One-Bed Room, and Presidential Suite. No room has the same design, making it perfect for frequent and repeat travelers who want to stay in the same hotel but want to enjoy a different room experience each time. My room, a corner Executive Suite, enjoys a mesmerizing view of the city’s CBD and part of the Chao Phraya River. In line with the concept of immersive experience (and probably keeping in mind the tough competition in the capital too), the hotel didn’t take for granted the design and concepts of its F&B outlets. The all-day dining venue on the 10th floor, The Sathorn, was designed to reflect the rich history of the district with almost every design element symbolizing something. Rice and Chili on the 5th floor, a contemporary Thai restaurant, serves a sumptuous Thai-Franco selection: authentic Thai in flavor, deliberately French in flair and presentation. Theatre Bar, on the 11th floor, is a thoroughly funky venue that should be discovered by the city’s discerning hipster crowd. Even BLD bistro on the Ground Floor, has those French accents: from its design to its signature food and drinks. There’s a pool bar on the 11th floor that must be the most “chillax” place this side of Sathorn (infinity edge pool with a view). Coming soon is the soon-to-be completed Rooftop Bar on 38th floor. For guests whose main criteria for choosing a hotel is location, they’re in luck. Mode Sathorn is not only located in Sathorn, the city’s CBD and considered as Bangkok’s most elite and most easily accessible boulevard; it sits just right at the very doorstep of the Surasak BTS station, making mobility a breeze. Oh, a tip: Try the Thai Yoga Massage that their Burisud Spa is offering (you can enjoy it in the privacy of your room or by the poolside). It’s simply one of the most relaxing, most recharging massages I have ever had in Bangkok, and I’ve done a lot of them. Indeed, simplistically speaking, even the most-savvy traveler will find something to enjoy at Mode Sathorn. And they haven’t even had a grand opening yet. Think what more they will be able to offer once the hotel is truly, fully operational.  Contact Details: Mode Sathorn Hotel Bangkok 144 North Sathorn Road, Silom Bangrak, Bangkok (BTS: Surasak) Tel: 02-623-4555 // E-mail: info@modesathorn.com october 2013 | 47

This is asita eco-resort, a new intimate boutique property consisting of just three traditional Thai houses and 20 villas; perfect not only as a holiday haven but even more perfect for wedding ceremony and celebrations. The boutique property is perfect for intimate affairs, especially for “green” Thai weddings. Evening wedding parties can also be easily arranged in the outdoors or in any of the three connected venues (Thai house, outdoor along the river, and meeting room). The indoor meeting room can fit up to 200 guests while up to 1,000 people can fit outdoors. The resort has its own team of professional chefs, and service and event organizer, who can take care of every detail: lighting design, sound system, bands, cue running, create theme party, master of ceremony, script and decorations – you name it. The wedding buffet will include a salad bar from its own organic garden, along with fruits, a variety of cakes, soups, main courses, live cooking stations, herbal drinks, tea, and coffee. In fact, asita eco-resort can easily meet professional requirements for any kind of functions and special occasions (from groups of 10 to groups of 200) – and in the eco-friendly way as well. Guests are served in a rowing boat and delivered to the porch of the meeting room. Meetings are more relaxing and revitalizing because of the hundred of shady trees to rest on during breaks. To top it all, the resort ensures a great sleep after all the special occasions and events. Guests can expect clean and comfortable beds, with four pillows in all types of rooms. There’s a big sofa bed and big bathroom, and topper on the bed made from feather. Internet coverage and speed is more than adequate. Air-con is adequately cool and quiet. Really, everything that can be expected in a tourist resort room is there and working properly – even breakfast is good value. And with many tourist attractions in the province just close by -the famous Amphawa Floating market is just 10 minutes away, and many good local restaurants surround the resort as well – the entire party can enjoy a holiday blast during their stay. Guests will love the resort’s green and peaceful setting, which is enhanced by countless pine trees surrounding it and an enormous canal nearby that helps recreate the yonder years of simple but elegant Thai upcountry lifestyle. But here’s a twist: it is run by a veteran team experienced in managing five-star hotels of international caliber and built with facilities equivalent to four-star hotels. Thus staff is exceptionally courteous, efficient and helpful, providing guests with an ideal retreat – whether for weddings or otherwise -- just one hour from Bangkok. Truly every detail has been taken care of to ensure that every guest will enjoy an unforgettable holiday without worrying whether their fun has been infringing too much on keeping a healthy, better environment for us all -- whether they’re here for a green wedding or just a pleasure holiday stay! 

Regent Rejuvenation

After months of comprehensive facelift,The Regent Singapore became filled with a rejuvenated and refreshed spirit that enhances even more enjoyment of the elegant hotel in the Lion City today

L

By Percy Roxas

ocated just minutes away from the tranquil Botanic Gardens and prime Orchard shopping hub, Regent Singapore is an oasis of calm, offering supreme comfort and anticipatory Four Seasons service. Built around a sun-filled atrium that ascends through the building’s 12-storey interior, the hotel offers guests a luxurious retreat with its spacious guestrooms, six outstanding restaurants and an elegant blend of contemporary décor with Asian highlights. One cannot help but enjoy the rooms here. With a soothing palette of neutral tones, accented by splashes of gold and orange – along with subtle Asian touches that reflect Southeast Asia’s rich heritage – the rooms of this hotel, all 440 of them, exude understated luxury and Oriental elegance.

Refurbished under the direction of the design firm Burega Farnell, and completed in June, it became an even more elegant haven with new carpet, paint, and wallpaper paired with vivid fabrics in the freshly upholstered furniture accentuating the tropical Nyatoh wood bed-frames. No, the hotel didn't closed down for renovation at all. Redesign work was done with careful consideration of the staying guests at the time. The result is an overall style that is classic, albeit with modern comforts balancing them. Observant guests will not fail to notice the ergonomic task chairs and modern lighting fixtures that enhance the look of the rooms. But there are more. Obviously, the convenience of guests working with multiple devices was foremost in the mind of the designer. There are three

contact/ desktop universal power points and a data socket for easy access and connectivity, and even the nightstands come equipped with bed-top level universal power points for charging while guests rest. Other thoughtful technological touches include cordless digital phones and an audio connector for iPods and MP3 players so guests can enjoy their favorite music throughout the room. Indeed, the general manager, Martin Sinclair, says, “Guest experience is at the heart of every design feature in the hotel. We have a reputation for warm, friendly service, and this strengthens our commitment to making Regent Singapore a true home away from home for travelers.” Beyond the guestrooms, Regent Singapore’s recent multimillion dollar makeover also included the upgrading of meeting spaces as well as the opening of a new all-Italian pastry shop, Dolcetto by Basilico. A thoughtfully designed space can foster productivity, maximize comfort, and minimize environmental impact. And Regent Singapore’s newly renovated meeting rooms, Cuscaden and Nassim, bear out this axiom beautifully. Benefiting from natural daylight, Cuscaden and Nassim make more than ideal and flexible meeting venues. Bright, airy and equipped with state-of-the-art technology, these meeting rooms guarantee delegate productivity and business success. Dolcetto by Basilico is the hotel’s latest gastronomic gem, celebrating authentic homemade Italian pastries and treats. Inspired by the success of Basilico, its flagship Italian restaurant, this artisanal pasticceria showcases premium coffee and specialties. Of course, it’s just one of the outstanding six food and beverage outlets that guests should try at the hotel. These include the Basilico, on Level 2, which serves fresh, seasonal and authentic Italian cuisine, both a la carte and buffet; Summer Palace, a Cantonese restaurant accentuated by a collection of fine Chinese arts and antiques on Level 3; The Bar, an inviting club lounge that is ideal for both business and pleasure; the Tea Lounge on the lobby level, an ideal setting for enjoying premium British teas, finger sandwiches, delectable desserts and a renowned scone selection; Tenshin, a modern Japanese restaurant that has gained a following among elite business travelers and luminaries; and Grand Palki, which is famous for its refined North Indian cuisine served in luxurious settings. But back to the rejuvenating, refreshing spirit that we opened this article about. Much of that new uplifting spirit in the hotel emanates from the art and artifacts that one finds around the hotel. Carefully integrated, as part of the hotel surroundings, is a collection of original art and museum-standard artifacts that reflect Singapore's diverse cultures. Prominent Hotel art features include the Singapore Shower sculpture at the Atrium by Michio Ihara (www.michioihara.com) and the Harmony Fountain at the hotel entrance by Stephanie Scuris. As can be expected, the highlight of the hotel is The Regent Club, which – to put it simply - raises the bar in comfort and luxury for discerning business travelers. And of course, there’s a wide range of sports and fitness facilities and services – including massage. The hotel’s ideal location and close proximity to the Singapore Botanic Gardens offers access to scenic jogging routes among quiet, green surroundings. Regent Singapore is indeed a warm, inviting haven. And with its convenient location -- in the city’s most select area, central to the business district, and some minutes walk away from Singapore’s most exclusive shopping and entertainment hub – it’s just the perfect place to stay when in Singapore. 

Rooting for Bangkok Why is Bangkok the most visited city in Asia? TripAdvisor executive Aaron Hung tells us how the award is decided By Laurence Civil

Aaron Hung Director of Partnerships TripAdvisor Asia

W

hen we heard that TripAdvisor recognized Bangkok as the most visited city in Asia, we wanted to know how the award was decided. We met Aaron Hung, their director of partnerships to discover more. "The result was based on the overall feedback we have received, which are then fed through an algorithm to give us on overall consensus of the city,” he said. "In Bangkok we are currently listing reviews of 729 hotels, 395 bed & breakfast and inns, 7,323 restaurants -- that number is growing every month -- and 657 things to do. All of these reviews show what people like about the city. Another factor we take into consideration is the way in which they search, what is it that they are actually looking for. In the case of Bangkok it was genuine hospitality, a smile that comes from the heart, the amazing diversity of food that's being served, a shoppers’ paradise and value for money. "We are aware that our open posting policy is at risk of being abused, but nevertheless, it's the only way for fellow travelers to share their experience both good and bad with other fellow travelers. "Our research show us that 98 percent find reviews consistent, 5355 percent won’t make a reservation without checking where they are thinking of staying or visiting without checking reviews posted with us. "To protect the integrity of the system we do have multiple layers of checks and balances to ensure authenticity. That starts with our content integrity team of 100 agents that don't just check individual reviews but also the pattern in which reviews are being posted. "If we discover a pattern that varies from the norm these reviews are flagged for further checking. The final step in the security of

integrity process is that the owner of the establishment has the right of reply if they feel what was said was not justifiable. "It's a massive task, but one we feel is justified to be able to provide the service we are striving for. We are averaging 200 million visitors a month to our 30 different websites in different countries and in 21 different languages. That makes us truly global. We have seen a 1520 percent growth in traffic in the past year, from Asia Pacific, Latin America, and China in particular." In just 13 years, TripAdvisor had become a key player in the travel decision-making process. Not just with individual travelers but also online booking agencies who often quote a comment made on trip advisor when presenting a travel experience to an enquiring potential customer. It’s even being used by airlines that have a hotel reservations service. "You may have seen various establishments displaying a TripAdvisor "Certificate of Excellence" and is curious as to the criteria of how they are awarded," says Aaron. "There is no advertising influence, it’s simply our way of providing recognition to top performing establishment based on the feedback we receive from their customers. "It is given when they have received a consistent level of rating over the last year. Our aim is that fellow travelers gain by sharing experience with each other. "We then provide the successful establishments with the tools to use the award in their marketing activity, which hopefully will bring them more business. "It’s not just the international travelers who use our service, recently TripAdvisor barometer identified that 68 percent of Thai travelers use travel review websites when making travel plans." 

Re-energizing Conrad

His previous achievement in Hilton Pattaya speaks for itself – and he expects to do the same with the great team at Conrad Bangkok

H

By Percy Roxas

arald Feurstein, general manager (GM) of Conrad Bangkok, says he is living the dream. “I can describe what makes a hotelier’s job so satisfying in so many ways but I think the fact that no day is ever the same in this job pretty much sums it,” he says. “I realized early that there are some great opportunity to build a career, work with interesting people, travel and explore different cultures in this industry. And I like that there’s never a dull moment indeed.” “Being a hotelier is not always fun,” the 45-year-old GM continues, “but when you’ve been doing this for a long time, you can ‘t imagine what else you would want do. It just becomes a passion you want to consistently pursue. “I mean, maybe saying that I’m living the dream sounds like an exaggeration. Truly, being a hotelier is hard work and sometimes we even have to forego lots of important occasions we would have loved to be part of. But then we get to do a lot of fun things and enjoy personal growth along the way.” Like most hoteliers lucky enough to be assigned in Thailand, Harald thinks the kingdom is a fantastic place to live and work in, and not just because he’s working for Conrad Bangkok. The awardwinning luxury hotel is not only one of the best convention hotels in Thailand, with one of the largest leisure and support facilities among hotels in similar category, but also has built a reputation for a nurturing working environment. Being at Conrad Bangkok and in Thailand enhances his enjoyment of being a hotelier. “There are lots of opportunities to do different things here,” he continues. “The people are great, and in general the lifestyle and quality of life is very, very good compared to many countries around us.” Harald's career has spanned three continents, starting in his native Austria where he launched his career as a waiter and bartender and slowly climbed up the ranks. He became a GM at 39. Harald has worked in Europe, Africa, and Asia holding various positions: F&B operations, business development, sales and marketing, and revenue management. He has been assigned to China, Malaysia, Korea, Japan, and the Philippines. Most recently, he was GM of Hilton Pattaya (in 2011). Hilton Pattaya was his initiation in the kingdom, and what an initiation it was. “I had a fabulous time in Pattaya,” Harald says. “Being the opening GM of Hilton Pattaya presented a very exciting challenge, one that worked really well because it became very successful. Hilton Pattaya is a great story for any hotel but I also really enjoy living in Pattaya. I really enjoyed my stay there, because against common belief, it has a lot more to offer than the obvious." Residing in Bangkok since January this year, Harald left Pattaya not because he wanted to, but because this great opportunity -becoming GM of Conrad Bangkok -- came along. How does he describe his first 10 months at Conrad Bangkok? “Personally, it was a very easy move for me because, in my career, I’ve never just moved one-and-a half hour on the road. Normally relocations involve different countries, different continents, and different shipping containers. This time, we just threw our suitcases into a truck and we're off. It’s very good because it was easy to settle

in. It allowed us a much quicker start in the hotel. No surrounding issues exist, which allowed me to do what I wanted to do very quickly so that in just 10 months we’ve already made some inroads and laid the foundation of what’s to come.” “A hotel lifestyle is different from those in other industries,” he adds. “We spend most of our time in the hotel but that’s great in itself and can be lots of fun. It’s also very challenging both personally and professionally. But having said that, we obviously also take time off as well. We do have hobbies. Thailand offers so much; it’s a beautiful country to explore.” Harald loves to go out of town and whenever there’s a long weekend, he and his wife use the opportunity to get away. “My wife and I have explored quite a lot of Thailand now. We’ve been different places that tourists would pay a lot of money to experience, and which we have the privilege to explore in our own time and in a much easier manner. We don't have to spend a lot of money to come and visit an interesting part of this country. We can just hop into a car on a weekend. We do just that, and it’s really cool.” These out-of-town trips also give Harald an opportunity to engage in another passion: photography. “My wife and I enjoy photography as a past time, on the amateur level of course. We spend a lot of time doing just this and it’s really, relaxing. Photography is something I really enjoy, aside from the fact that I exercise a lot and run marathons.” Harald has in fact run all over Thailand. Harald loves that even this personal passion for sports and exercise can easily blend with his chosen career. “I recently ran during Mother’s Day weekend and almost 30 people in the hotel came along, making the occasion a virtual team-building activity,” he says. “It’s exciting to do some fun stuff with the people you work with, with the team. And that’s something very easily done in Thailand.” Enjoying the destination where he lives in at the moment is something Harald always does. “I’m very adaptable in both in my personal and professional lives. I always explore new things. When I live in the Philippines, I was scuba diving all the time because it is right there at my doorsteps. I just jump in the water and dive.” In Bangkok, Harald and his wife make an effort to find new places as much as they can. “We try to see what else is out there, because really – in Bangkok -- there’s just so much. There’s no place like Bangkok in this regard,” he says. “We explore a new bar, a new restaurant, or a new place here and there at least twice or thrice a month. Visiting these places is also good on the professional level, because they keep on inspiring me on maybe how we could do things a bit differently at the hotel. It’s always good to get some new ideas.” Being new at Conrad Bangkok, he understandably can’t speak much about achievements yet, but his achievement in his previous assignment in Hilton Pattaya speaks for itself. “It was the first hotel opening that I was allowed to lead as GM and I basically built it to what it is today. Obviously it’s not a one-man thing, and I was blessed to have a great team with me. It’s the team they made it work. I’m sure we can do the same for Conrad Bangkok, because I also have a great team here.” 

Entrenching a 'New Marriott' "The sustainable business strategy for a successful hotel is to be involved with the local community." By LauRENCE CIVIL

Gerrit Graef General Manager Bangkok Marriott Sukhumvit

G

rowing up as a German military kid, he was used to the idea of packing up and moving somewhere new every two years, a great grounding for his future career in the international hospitality business. He left school when he was aged just 14-years-old to become an apprentice chef, starting his culinary career by peeling onions. He started on the bottom rung and worked his way up. From day one his goal was to visit a new country, so far he has clocked 51, well ahead of schedule. He started with Marriott in 1996 working in Cologne, Germany. His first overseas posting was in Dubai. "Professionally that was the biggest learning curve," says Gerrit, "the hotel had associates from 48 different countries and cultures, and just seven percent were local Emiratis. From the Middle East I moved to Mumbai, in a regional role, opening new hotels. There I learnt that Indians grow up to be competitive in the workplace." "This is my 13th hotel opening," he says, "I am a foodie and Bangkok is known for its culinary diversity, this move took me back to my roots. Our pre-opening study showed that there was neither a steakhouse nor a rooftop bar in Thonglor. Those were the gaps in the market for us to fill with The District Grill Room & Bar and the Octave on the roof. We want to be more than just another hotel. We want to be part of the local community. Being accessible, affordable and offering value for money we are attracting 85 percent of our bar and restaurant customers from the local community. Sukhumvit is the Manhattan of Bangkok. "This hotel is the first of those being labeled "New Marriott," targeting generation Y -- those born in the early '80s upwards -with a team of associates in a similar age group who can engage with our guests and get their feedback. The aim is to offer a brilliant travel experience. Shortly, an iPhone app will be introduced so that guests can check themselves in on the phone. Very importantly it has to be a hassle-free experience. "The sustainable business strategy for a successful hotel is to be involved with the local community," he says. "A successful

dining experience can lead to us getting more business when they can combine business with pleasure. A visitor has multiple needs during his stay, my job is to be the master blender to make sure that they are all met. It's all about positioning the hotel in the market so that it appeals equally to both the local and international traveler." This Marriott is two-in-one, both an executive apartment and a hotel, in two adjacent buildings. It has a senior management team taking overall care of the two buildings with each having a junior management team to help look after the details in each. The long term guest has different needs to the guest who is just staying a couple of nights. A service apartment with full hotel facilities offers another value added factor in service. "I last cooked professionally in 1990," he says, "but I am a foodie GM with a passion for quality. Before every service in each of our outlets two dishes are prepared, sometimes paired with wine, for our colleagues to taste and critique. The rational is that people will sell a product better if they are familiar with what they are offering." "Most of our associates have an average of seven years or more with the company," he says. "It is how you treat people that keeps them. To achieve that we offer strong training and offer career development. "I believe in having open and honest communication to encourage engagement. We have an open door policy and seek associate satisfaction. They are taught how to do the best and we leave the execution to them. Take the football analogy, I am a coach looking critically at my associates to play together as a team. I am a team player rather than a structure player wanting to create a happy working environment "I have what I call ‘a cup of idea meetings' with our associates after joining the team but it can take a couple of months to understand how it works. I am pleasantly surprised at how open our associates are in the way they speak to me. Our philosophy is to treat the customer as if they were a member of your family coming to your home. The hotel should be treated as the guest’s second home." ď Ž

Riverside Renaissance By Dave Stamboulis

angkok’s waterways have long been the real arteries of the city, especially one in which traffic snarls are legendary. Yet for years all the trendy and chic new eating and drinking options were popping up inland, in fashionable Thonglor and bustling Silom, or along Sukhumvit, with little attention being paid to Bangkok’s water world. That has all changed recently, with the Chao Phraya River now becoming the place to hang-out once again, and for good reason. The breezes are cool, the transport easy on the system, and the fabulous views combined with all the fantastic eats and drinks making the monicker "Venice of the East" seem all that relevant again. The Chao Phraya now features a romantic eatery or trendy nightspot on just about every bend in Bangkok, with a plethora of snazzy eateries and cool hang-out bars just beckoning for a drink or two, whether it be for sunset gazing or after-the lights-go down lounging. One could spend ages just exploring all, but for those who want to delve in right away, here are some of the best spots from north to south:

Sala Rattanakosin

Sala Rattanakosin (39 Soi Ta

Tien, Maharaj Rd, 02-622-1388, www. salarattanakosin.com) is a chic new restaurant, bar, and boutique guesthouse that throws the knockout punch when it comes to river views. Located just opposite the iconic Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), you’ve got the best seat in the house come evening, when the temple gets illuminated with golden lights while the colorful cruise boats meander by. British ace chef Tony Wrigley will stun your palate with creations like roasted whole baby chicken rubbed with Chermoula spices, or his Massaman southern curry with braised lamb shank; while the rooftop bar gives even more superlative views and you contemplate it all over a River Breeze (rum, lime juice, triple sec, and pineapple).

Chon:

located in a cluster of gorgeous old teakwood houses in the exclusive Siam Hotel ((3/2 Khao Rd., Dusit, 02-206-6999. www.thesiamhotel.com) overlooking the Chao Phraya, Chon offers up classical Thai fare such as kurobata pork ribs in longan honey while you dine surrounded by stylish Thai antiques and collectibles. There is also the Deco Bar and Bistro that has a jazzy feel to it, and guests of the hotel can drink at the Bather’s Bar, where spacious daybeds sit next to an infinity pool, taking in the entire sweep of the river. This is classy at its utmost.

The Riva Surya

(23 Phra Arthit Road, Phranakorn, 02-6335000, http://www. snhcollection.com/ rivasurya) has brought boutique to Khao San Road, and this elegant resort features Babble and Rum, a restaurant and mezzanine bar with French décor that has daybeds to recline on, overlooking the river while you nibble on the signature smoked salmon and avocado salad, and drink a few glasses of Jelly Riva (vodka, lime, and melon syrup on jelly) to refresh yourself.

Checkmate Bar and Bistro

(Asiatique The Riverfront #E01, 2194 Charoen Krung Soi 72-74, 086 977 8749): If you have made it this far down the river you won’t be disappointed, as Checkmate checks in with one of the nicest vibes to be found along the Chao Phraya in the happening Asiatique Night Market. Using chess as a motif (unwinding with a game after work), the black and white bistro and bar will seduce you with some excellent fusion fare and outstanding cocktails. Standouts include a salmon sashimi salad with wasabi dressing and crab cakes on lemongrass stalks, while the bar offerings range from signature drinks to pints of Hoegaarden Rose or Stella. Different live bands play each evening, and there is a warm dÊcor accompanying the whole scene.

Longtail Bar and Riverside Terrace:

located on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya in the dazzling Anantara Riverside Resort (257/1-3 Charoennakorn Road, Thonburi, 02-476-0022, http://bangkokriverside.anantara.com), the Longtail Bar features Lanna style architecture and tables and chairs laid out along the pier, giving tremendous views east of the Bangkok skyline. Enjoy a Bangkok Bridge (gin, kaffir lime syrup, and lychee liqueur) while watching the teak shuttle boats come and go. The adjacent Riverside Terrace has a prime spot overlooking the Chao Phraya, not to mention traditional dancers performing on a flame lit stage to accompany wonderful seafood and barbecue buffet dinners.

The Deck and Amorosa (36-38 Soi Pratu Nok

Meanwhile, you can truly savor the illuminated views of the temple by having a few drinks at the quaint Amorosa bar upstairs.

Provocative ItalianAmerican Cuisine Scalini, at the newly opened Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok, stakes its claim on the Bangkok food scene by Melissa Richter

I

t takes something quite special for a new restaurant to stand out from the crowd, and Scalini is primed to stake its claim on the Bangkok food scene. Located in the sumptuous Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok, the restaurant is already creating a buzz with their exciting New York City 192030’s Prohibition Era dining concept, and approachable Italian-American cuisine. Located on the second level, you enter via a bold and dramatic spiral staircase that leads to an open and inviting space.

The warm color scheme is a symphony of rich caramels and dark chocolate browns. It boasts an easy-going aesthetic with a contemporary feel accented by a contrast of textures in silk, leather, and metallic hues of silver and copper. The focal point is the interactive kitchen with wood-burning pizza oven, and the centrally located wine cellar that doubles as a stylish yet unconventional room divider. Executive Sous Chef Egidio Latorraca, who hails from Milan in Italy, has designed a captivating menu inspired by the cuisine that Italian immigrants prepared when they first came to New York City. You will find clever interpretations of traditional favorites that utilize ingredients sourced locally in Thailand and the highest quality ingredients imported from abroad. You can expect to find a range of tempting salads, pastas, and homemade pizza’s as well as certified USDA Black Angus Beef steaks grilled to perfection in their wood-burning oven. Roberto Visaggio, the gregarious and immensely knowledgeable outlet manager, is readily on hand to suggest a signature cocktail or bottle of wine to enhance your dining experience. Never one to turn down sage advice, I opted for a lovely Chianti by Classico Banfi, which is available by the glass. To start the meal off, Roberto recommended an intriguing selection of imported meats and cheeses that can be ordered from Scalini's sister restaurant, Mondo, which is a tapas style venue on the lower level of the hotel. Served with a trio of house-made jams (kiwi, mango and fig), and an evocative mix of Gorgonzola, Asiago, and Brie with black truffle, and a rare Parmesan cheese that was aged for 24 months.

The cold cuts included a mild Bologna with pistachio nuts, spicy Salami, 28 monthaged Prosciutto di Parma, and a homemade cured beef called carne salada. Next I tried a sampler platter of mini wagyu burger with aioli sambal, black cod mantecato with miso dressing and fried whole tempura prawns. The burger -- with its soft bun, juicy meat, and tasty caramelized onions -- was particularly successful, as was the hot and crispy tempura shrimp. Scalini’s signature dish of tuna and salmon tartar, bitter leaves, lemon aioli, mango with grilled ciabatta was up next and I was immediately impressed with how large the portion was. Bright and colorful, it was big enough for several people to easily share. For the main course I indulged in roasted Mediterranean seabass, EVOO, aglio candito, vongole sauce, saffron emulsion, and pomodorini ciligia. Beautifully composed, this is a delicate dish of perfectly cooked seafood with complementary elements of clams and sweet sundried tomatoes. Dessert was another pleasant surprise as I dive into a light and refreshing lemon verbena panna cotta with strawberry preserves, wild berries and rosé sorbet. Scalini is memorable for more than a few good reasons. It encompasses all the key ingredients required to make it a resounding success. When you visit, you will discover a sophisticated contemporary venue with superior service and provocative cuisine that is neither pretentious nor contrived.  Contact Details: Scalini, 2nd Level, Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok Sukhumvit 24 (BTS: Phrom Phong) Tel: 02-620-6666

Unique Culinary Experience

At Jahn, Conrad Koh Samui, Thai classics are approached with the sophistication and elegance of European fine dining

J

by Sid Sehgal ahn Restaurant is set atop a plunging cliff with dramatic views of the southern Taling Ngam coast, the flagship restaurant of Conrad Koh Samui. In the crown of the island’s increasingly sophisticated dining scene, it is arguably, one of the most sparkling jewels. Jahn means “moon” in Thai, and like its namesake, the restaurant is mostly radiant, especially in the evening. Lighting is dim, music is soft, and conversations are muted. Why? Our guess is because no one wants to steal the thunder from the main stars of the restaurant, the food. The menu lists the usual suspects but with a definitive Western flair, especially the signature “Tasting of Jahn,” an eightcourse dinner for Bt2,999++ (Bt4,999++ with wine pairing). The tasting starts with hors d’oeuvres, an appetizer of mahor chicken, rice cracker with minced pork, and betel leaf with prawns. Next, “Duo of Pacific Rock Oysters,” a dish that presents a set of innovative dressings, passion fruit with sesame, and Bloody Mary. Following this

70

Lookeast | wine & dine

is tom kha gai (a traditional Thai coconut soup made of corn-fed chicken breast, morel mushrooms, lemongrass, galangal, and coconut). Jahn’s preparation of this common classic was absolutely delightful. Now the palate is cleansed with cucumber and jujube sorbet before moving on to the main course, which includes a choice of massaman of wagyu beef, with potatoes, pearl onions, peanuts, and red onion or panfried red snapper green curry with seared scallops, butterfly jasmine rice, kaffir lime, eggplant, Thai basil, and galangal. Both options were splendid, to say the least. We were then presented with a predessert dish: coconut jackfruit shooter with macadamia ice cream. The actual dessert was pumpkin with chocolate “delice,” a chocolate fondant with caramel fudge, vanilla, and peanut ice cream. The meal ended with petit fours, which were cute bitesized treats; assorted macaroons, fruit jellies, marshmallows, and chocolate truffles. A mere enumeration of our chosen menu does not give justice to the care that the chef

has apparently showered in the dishes, but the contented, happy faces that one notices at the other tables proved that the diners are aware of that fact. It is really no surprise then that Jahn is becoming a byword among many Samui foodies. Now, to call Jahn a Thai restaurant is a bit misleading because while the flavor profile and the majority of the ingredients used were certainly local, the presentation and attention to detail were worthy of any Michelin-star restaurant in Paris. It is also worth mentioning that the service staff speaks excellent English, knows the menu well, and are attentive without being intrusive. With only 28 seats, advanced reservations are highly recommended.  Contact Details: Jahn Restaurant Conrad Koh Samui 49/8-9 Moo 4, Hillcrest Road, Tambol Taling Ngam, Koh Samui Tel: 077-915-888 www.conradkohsamui.com

Rear Entry at Q Bar’s Le Derrière

Story and Photos by Dave Stamboulis

L

e Derrière refers to the rump or backside in French, to put it politely, and the Q Bar’s latest addition to the Bangkok nightlife is certainly full of all the right curves. Buddha Bar designer Bruno Tanquerel came in here and turned owner David Jacobson’s love of vintage French into one of the most romantic and nostalgic period pieces to grace Bangkok in recent memory. With an imported century old zinc bar complete with antique lights, bourgeois red sofa and chair sets and checkered tile floor, this former frame shop in the back of the Q Bar will transport you to Paris a la 1900. In harmony with the décor, Le Derrière is a French champagne and absinthe bar. Absinthe, that naughty child of the drinking world (supposed to cause hallucinations and do all sorts of wicked things to you) is the drink of choice here, and the drink menu not only lists the inebriants of choice, but also the famous artistes who shared a passion for them, with the likes of Picasso, Van Gogh, Manet, Edgar Allen Poe, Mark Twain, and Jack London to name but a few. There are 10 different bottles of the stuff from France, Switzerland, and several other spots, ranging from 50- to a mind-numbing 90 percent, and they all get poured out via a traditional four spigot absinthe fountain; the absinthe slowly dripping down through a sugar cube and through an absinthe spoon into your glass. Manager Benoit Raynal is on hand to show you how to drink it properly or perhaps talk you into one of the absinthe cocktails that have become one of the house mainstays. The bar’s signature Le Derrière is literally all alcohol, made up of absinthe, rum, vanilla vodka, kahlua, and chili, and to say it packs a mean punch is an understatement. A larger food menu is in the works (with this décor, a fine French restaurant will bring Bangkok foodies out in droves), but for now there are plenty of delectable delights to go along with your drinks. Imported French oysters are a highlight, and you can indulge in a plate of 12 along with a bottle of Colombelle for Bt1,990. There are also

76

Lookeast | wine & dine

charcuterie and fromages, assorted imported meat and cheese plates, as well as foie gras terrine, and an arugula salad topped with warm goat cheese, smoked bacon, and champagne vinaigrette to take care of any munchies you might have. Speaking of champagne, the list at Le Derrière is just as impressive as the absinthe, with over a dozen choices ranging from Nicolas Feuillate to Perrier Jouet Belle Epoque for that special occasion. You can drink by the bottle or with the Nicolas Feuillate, by the glass. On Tuesday evenings, Le Derrière celebrates Absinthe Tuesdays, offering all absinthe cocktails for Bt250-Bt350 all-night-long. As the bar has a retractable roof, smoking is also allowed, and not surprisingly, there is a stock of Cohiba premium Cuban cigars behind the bar, perfect for lounging in one’s red velvet armchair with. Anyone with panache for antique or good old joie de vivre French flair needs to check out Le Derrière. While the adjoining Q Bar is all about loud partying, Le Derrière is all about sophisticated relaxation. As Raynal puts it, “It’s a talkative bar.” Walking through the revolving doors here into this niche of nostalgia feels a bit like Alice going down the rabbit hole. Or perhaps it is just the effect of the absinthe. Just remember, entry is through the rear. 

merican Toby Allen thinks of himself as a hardworking person; a leader driven by the desire to constantly improve things for which he is responsible. “I strive to better the lives of the people who work with me by rewarding those who give their best efforts, give customers more than they expect, and honor those they meet along life’s journey,” says the CEO of Destiny Enterprise, which operates the award-winning Oasis Spas throughout Thailand. Although Toby has been to 130 countries already, and has vacationed in many exotic places around the world, he says he loves Chiang Mai the

most. “It is my favorite place to live; my idea of a perfect holiday destination,” he told Lookeast. Toby thinks Bangkok is amazing, Pattaya is unique, and Phuket wonderful with its beautiful beaches, but still thinks Chiang Mai is the most special place in Thailand because of its culture. "The pace of life is easy-going, the people are very kind, and the city is calm and beautiful," he elaborates. "It is the most serene place I know. I find it very peaceful here." Toby first learned about Chiang Mai from a friend who worked at an orphanage here, and first visited it 15 years ago. “I flew from Denver, Colorado to Chiang Mai for a vacation,”

he recalls. “I chose to come here because I like mountains." Majestic mountains are far more appealing to him than sandy beaches. He found Chiang Mai to be the perfect size city, “big enough to have everything you want yet small enough to be able to find it.” He also liked the ease of getting there. “With hourly fights you can come and go whenever you like. The value of what you receive for your money is great in Chiang Mai," he says. "Actually, I think it’s the best in Asia." Asked if there is downside to Chiang Mai, he had to think for a long time. “Nothing comes to mind immediately,” he replies. “However, Chiang Mai has started to have rush hours and heavy traffic, which it didn't have when I moved here. But, although the traffic can be frustrating at times, it is a good sign because it means the city is growing and prospering.” In fact his ties with Chiang Mai becomes stronger every day. He now lives in Chiang Mai, and he says, "probably for life." 

Tips to Share with Fellow Travelers:

Must-Do: Although Chiang Mai has many wonderful and unique features that tourist enjoy, we recommend getting a treatment at Oasis Spa. This is a requirement to make the most of your visit. DON’T DO: Don’t just do the typical tourist things, get off the beaten track and experience the real culture of Chiang Mai. Must-See: Doi Suthep at sunsets. Sleep at: I suggest staying at a boutique hotel and, of course, we believe the Oasis Baan Saen Doi Spa Resort is the best possible hotel for business and vacation travelers. Eat at: I wholeheartedly recommend the Green Table Restaurant, famous for Mediterranean Cuisine. It's located on the second floor of Kantary Terrence at Nimmanhaeminda Soi 12 Drink at: Wine Bar on Nimmanhaeminda for the best wine, best deals, and best times. Bring: Bring your spirit of adventure and desire to have a good time, and don’t forget the mosquito repellant.
