Business Update
The awards season is upon us! When you receive this magazine, you may still have time if you act fast – The Vale4Business Awards close on 1st February. Also, you have until 9 February to nominate a local hero, group or business who enriches this town in the Town Council’s Community Awards – go to http://goo.gl/bfbAWf. Keep up to date with what is going on in the wider area, with the Vale and South Oxfordshire District Council’s business breakfast on 20th February, always very informative and uplifting, this year it is being held at the Electron Building at the Harwell Campus from 7:30am until 10am, meet our local councillors, there will be an opportunity to ask questions. To book tickets, go to http://goo.gl/pnEeym We eagerly await further news of the extension of the retail offering at Faringdon Park. Details are still being finalised, watch this space next month! With all the growth in the area, it seems to fly in the face of Lloyds Bank’s decision to close their Faringdon branch in June. This is part of a much wider programme of rationalisation for the bank, but it leaves townsfolk with a lengthy journey to Lechlade or Highworth for the nearest alternatives. The bank will be providing a mobile banking service during the summer and you can use the Post Office for certain services. What do you think of this decision? Lloyds Bank have published their reasons for the closure to view this go to http://goo.gl/wCBzCR The bank assert that customers are using it less often, which is a reflection of the advance of on-line alternatives and a change in people’s behaviours as we progress, to a cash less society but it will certainly severely inconvenience many local residents and businesses. The Chamber of Commerce are considering holding a meeting to discuss the issues arising from this decision, please contact president@faringdonchamberofcommerce.co.uk if you are interested in receiving details of this. Finally, don’t forget the themed Saturday market on 17th February, it will take place in The Corn Exchange. This month it will be a FairTrade market. Let’s celebrate that Faringdon was the first Fairtrade town in the South East!

0 0 0 1 Whisky has become a truly international spirit, as not only is it being produced in more and more countries around the world it is also being enjoyed by consumers of many different nationalities. You only have to look at social media to see how the #whiskyfabric is growing and for some years now the number of visitors we get from outside the UK has been increasing, with whisky lovers from as far afield as Chile and New Zealand finding their way to the shop and even as I write this we have visitors from Mauritius! This is definitely something to be celebrated. Whisky lovers seem to share a conviviality and an appreciation of the good things in life that transcends any cultural differences plus we have learnt much from our visitors, not only about whisky but also interesting snippets about what happens in their part of the world. We have also been fortunate enough to enjoy their generosity of spirit – metaphorically as a sharing of whisky knowledge / gossip and literally in the form of samples we have received of such gems as Rosebank and Port Ellen! It is not only visitors to the shop and the website that remind us of that fascinating wider whisky world but also the continually expanding number of distilleries around the world, as they have all sorts of interesting influences that make their whisk(e)y different. For example, although the Japanese normally follow the traditional Scottish whisky production processes their whisky cannot but help be influenced by the fact that it is often designed to be drunk alongside their typically refined and fragrant food and perhaps this is why their whiskies tends to have similar attributes. Additionally, where Japanese oak (Mizunara wood) has been used for maturation there can be found a certain spiciness that has notes of incense/sandalwood along with a coconut flavour. Likewise, in Holland the whiskies produced at the Zuidam distillery are influenced by their use of windmills to mill the malted barley, and because these grind the barley slowly then it is claimed more aromas are retained. Whether it does or not, by using the windmills they are helping to conserve old Dutch traditions. Working with the local environment also shapes whisky and I discussed a few months ago how the Taiwanese distillery Kavalan’s fruity and smooth spirit is a result of adapting their production processes to fit the specific climate they are in. Additionally, both environment and culture can play their part. For instance, the entrepreneurial spirit and ‘have a go’ attitude that characterises Australians, coupled with a cool climate ideal for whisky making, must surely have influenced the numerous craft distilleries that have arisen in Tasmania and will also influence the whiskies that are produced. Ultimately, whisky provides both common ground to unite whisky lovers world wide but also differences that awaken your interest and send you off to explore still further. Fran Thomas

Faringdon Business Breakfast Club To welcome in the New Year, we were lucky enough to have a presentation from Jack FM on the benefits of local radio advertising. The Christmas and New Year break had played havoc with our own advertising and therefore it was a lovely surprise to see such a good turnout for our first meeting in 2018. We welcomed a few new members before we all gave our 60-second pitches covering a broad range of services from finance and accountancy including weird and wonderful mortgage arrangements through marketing services, property maintenance, coaching and well-being including chiropractic services. It is always amazing to hear about the broad range of services that are available to the Faringdon business community. Amanda and Hamish gave us a very interesting presentation about Jack FM. It was fascinating to hear about the development of the Oxfordshire local radio station and how it now has three separate services that focus on particular music ‘markets’. The statistics were very interesting with 90% of the UK population tuning into radio every week and Jack FM reaching 104,000 people every week. We also heard how the future and development of ‘radio’ will be influenced by digital devices and service that are already being introduced. Hamish and Amanda answered questions from the floor that indicated that nearly 25% of broadcast time is given to advertising and that in terms of brand awareness it was an extremely effective method of communication. At our next meeting on 8 February 2018, we will be holding our ‘why you love your job’ activity giving everyone a couple of minutes to tell us in more depth about their passion or any issues they are facing. You can book by going to: https://fbbc-networking.co.uk/event/why-you-love-your-job

Faringdon Coffee House Lunch at Faringdon Coffee House. An extremely good recommendation of a great place to frequent, is to walk into the venue and find a few of your friends sitting there, having lunch with plenty of coffee and company!… This is exactly what happened to me the first time I walked into the New Faringdon Coffee House, with the lovely welcoming smiles of Indria, who is Marcel's wife, from the Eagle at Little Coxwell and Nita, who is Indria’s cousins wife, the business is a beautifully family run business. The coffee house has a very relaxing feel to it, a place you can pull up a chair and forget about all your dramas and busy lives and chill out! Nothing quite compares to “word of mouth” well, other than the food and drink we are served and the way it is presented, with Marcel the owner and Chef, being the creator of the food served at the coffee house, its no wonder its all of a very high standard. The sandwiches served are made from freshly baked bread, each week the variety are changed depending on season availability, all ingredients are locally sourced. I opted for the salmon and cream cheese, which was served with a wonderful cup of coffee, absolutely delicious my partner opted for the Slow Roasted Shoulder of Lamb gouda cheese and mustard, this was unbelievable, so tasty, the lamb tender and topped with the melted cheese, highly recommended, also with a super cup of coffee, Columbian I believe, accompanied with a small glass of water, very good. This was followed with the most mouth watering lemon meringue tart for me, the pastry was light and flaky, you must try one, the diet is out of the window at this stage. My other half had the tiramisu, which was a total delight, I know this as I managed to pinch a bite. Also on the menu this day were, Croissants, Swiss Cheese and Tomato, Spinach and Ricotta Strudel, Cottage Pie and Fish and Leek Pie. Brownie with Cream Cheese, Apple Pie Crumble and for the gluten free, Chocolate Financiers Gluten Free. Plenty of choice for every pallet. Fancy a light lunch and coffee in a warm happy atmosphere, this is a definite must, you will not be disappointed. Opening hours are: Monday to Saturday 9am - 4pm Sunday closed.

Louise and Nancy celebrate record year with Aussie singer Peter Andre Two Slimming World Consultants from Faringdon were congratulated on helping slimmer's to lose weight and change their lives by singer and TV presenter Peter Andre. Louise Preece and Nancy Clayson were delighted to get a chance to cuddle up to Peter when he presented the annual Slimming World Awards. The Mysterious Girl singer co-hosted the event with the organisation’s founder and chair Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE. Louise, who runs a Slimming World group at Faringdon United Church, every Wednesday and Thursday, said Peter’s presence at the awards was extra special because earlier in 2017 he supported Slimming World’s most successful fundraising event ever – The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw, which raised a record-breaking £3.3 million in just two weeks. The annual clothes throw encourages Slimming World’s 900,000 group members to donate the clothes, shoes, bags and accessories that are now too big for them to Cancer Research UK, by filling up specially-branded bags and taking them along to their weekly group sessions. February Ramblings!

Hello and welcome to a new monthly ramble. Time does fly by – I can’t believe that 6 months have already flown by since we started supporting our elder daughter in the organisation of her July wedding. Our younger daughter studies and works in Cardiff and is a very active Mental Health Champion under the Time to Change Wales banner. A link has been recommended by her: www.time-to-change.org.uk February 1st is Time to Talk Day UK – a day where you CAN talk about it, wherever you are. Then there’s www.mind.org.uk, the mental health charity who won’t give up until everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets support and respect. Small acts of awareness and understanding can seem a great lifeline to those going through the 1.5% of us suffering from some form of mental illness. For example, simply listening to someone and making no judgement, or, asking if they are OK and even asking if that person would just like to talk to you. As I write, the Big Garden Birdwatch is almost upon us again too, on the weekend of 27th to 29th January – citizen science in action, originally launched by the RSPB for younger members in 1979. The only commitment is an hour of anyone’s time watching those birds in the garden or outdoors and noting down only the largest group of each bird species visiting or seen in that hour – but not in lashing rain or very windy weather of course! In 1979 34,000 people took part – in 2011, over 600,000. Now some 8 million birds are recorded during BGB – cities, villages, small and large gardens, schools and other public places, prisons, tower blocks and even narrowboats! That’s a very big stock-taking exercise. 93% of gardens see Blackbirds and 90% of gardens have Robins present there. House Sparrows are still seen as the top bird on the list; however their numbers have fallen by 57% since 1979, due to a range of factors, including reduced nesting sites and lack of vertebrate food for their chicks. Have any of you seen the amazing starling murmurations this year, as they make plans to roost for the night? We have in Wales and the sound of their wings, with voice calls, is unforgettable. As I write, there is a warning from the Animal & Plant Health Agency currently about bird flu being detected in Dorset. Highly pathogenic H5N6 bird flu has been detected in wild birds in Dorset. It is the first confirmed finding of the virus in the UK this winter, and tests have shown it is closely related to the H5N6 strain that has been circulating in wild birds across Europe in recent months. This is different to the H5N6 strain which affected people in China last year and Public Health England have advised the risk to public health is very low. The Food Standards Agency have also offered reassurance that bird flu does not pose a food safety risk for UK consumers. A local ‘avian influenza prevention zone’ has been declared in the area of south Dorset where the diseased birds were found. This means it will be mandatory for all captive bird keepers in this Zone to put enhanced biosecurity measures in place. Further information can be found on GOV.UK. This Zone will be in place until further notice and will be kept under regular review as part of our work to monitor the threat of bird flu. It is vital that anyone who keeps birds, whether a few in a back garden or thousands on a commercial unit is vigilant. All poultry keepers should: •minimise movement in and out of bird enclosures •clean footwear before and after visiting birds, using a Defra approved disinfectant at entrances and exits •clean and disinfect vehicles and equipment that have come into contact with poultry •keep areas where birds live clean and tidy, and regularly disinfect hard surfaces such as paths and walkways •humanely control rats and mice •place birds’ food and water in fully enclosed areas protected from wild birds, and remove any spilled feed regularly •keep birds separate from wildlife and wild waterfowl by putting suitable fencing around outdoor areas they access •keep a close watch on birds for any signs of disease and report any very sick birds or unexplained deaths to your vet Poultry keepers and members of the public should report dead wild birds to the Defra helpline on 03459 33 55 77 and bird keepers should report suspicion of disease to APHA on 03000 200 301. On a lighter note, looking at my Practice calendar, I can see that we have National Dental Month this month (February), with special offers for our clients. Do watch this space! Thinking of charities, the Practice Christmas charity bonanza raised almost £800 to be divided between The Blue Cross animal charity and the Oxford branch of the Ronald McDonald Charity, which provides free 'home away from home' accommodation for families with children in hospital. Thank you so much to all of you who contributed to this humbling success and to my Staff who organised it all over several months last year. Well done! Thank you for your company – you must be tired out! Robert Elliott 21-23 High Street, Stanford In The Vale, SN7 8LH 01367 710595 See you next month and a happy Valentine’s Day!

Wine Tourism
Rob.. The Cheese Man! Best Cornish Pasty’s. Really Tasty Gammon Ham. 01367 241702 Market Place Faringdon SN7 7HP
Wine tourism, also known as Enotourism explained by Wikipedia; ‘the tourism whose purpose is or includes the tasting, consumption or purchase of wine, often near the source’. In short, this is where my love/career/interest in all things vinous began. There is nothing like being amongst the vines, admiring nature’s magic in producing grapes that humans can then transform into wine, whilst sampling a glass of this wondrous liquid. A recent trip back to Australia naturally meant obligatory visits to wineries and cellar doors where one can partake in one’s most favourite past time – wine tasting! When I first started drinking wine (I admit it – sweet spatlese wines….), it was the weekend standard, to hire a mini bus, load it up with your mates and hit the wine regions. We would taste wines, meet winemakers and generally not remember much after 2pm! Things have changed slightly thanks to our enthusiastic generation, whereby bus tours need to be booked in (warning the wineries to send in the cavalry) and the winemaker may be a rarer sighting. This will be entirely dependent on the size of the winery; often smaller family run wineries are more hands on with their Cellar Doors. Our timing was right when we headed to McLaren Vale, an hour south of Adelaide, South Australia. We had heard about d’Arenberg’s (their wines are available from Waitrose – the Hermit Crab is one of my all-time favourites) new controversial tasting experience aptly named ‘The Cube’. We thought we would pop by to check it out and see what all the hoo-ha was about. Well, talk about an immersive tasting experience…. To begin with, you enter an aroma room where you squeeze bicycle horns to cop a whiff of almonds or apricots or vanilla or leaves to name a few. The next room has a floor to ceiling visual art projection explaining the story behind the d’Arenberg labels and the vineyards. The following room invites you to walk through a dark plastic streamer cylinder to evoke the feeling of being in a wine vat. You then take the lift to the top floor where you are greeted with spectacular views of McLaren Vale; the vines and the sea. Then, the tasting begins! The Cellar Door experience is a way to connect with the origin of the wine and to learn more about its transformation from grape into wine. Although my recent experience is something akin to being Charlie in the chocolate factory, there are a few more traditional style wineries to have a look at with in an hour from Faringdon. Property Predictions for 2018!
This time last year we launched our popular property blog with Property Predictions for 2017 so we thought it would be good to see how we faired and to offer a view on the next 12 months. Our first prediction for 2017 was that there would be a regional decrease in the number of sales from the previous year of around 35%. Based on data from Land Registry for the Vale of the White Horse, we saw a year on year drop 30.14% drop in sales. So far, not a bad first prediction! Secondly, we predicted that there would be less property coming to market. We tracked the available stock of property for sale in the area for 2017 and on average, there were 15.56% less properties for sale in the Vale of the White Horse. Our third and final prediction was that there would only be a minimal rise in property prices within our region and, as our various Property Reports throughout the year, showed, there was a slight increase. Again, using the Land Registration data, we saw a rise in average prices of 6.84% from £391,116 to £417,903. In summary, Waymark’s predictions were very close to what actually happened. Proof that when it comes to understanding the local market, a traditional high street agent will always have a greater insight into what property is actually doing.
With that in mind, what does Waymark think 2018 will be like for our region? In terms of the number of properties coming to the market, we expect to see a slight increase of properties coming to the market compared to 2017. We also expect the New Homes market, given the various incentives available to purchases to remain buoyant. We do not expect demand for property to materially change from 2017 and overall we expect to see a slight rise in average prices. The increase in availability will give buyers a little more choice but we don’t think this will have a significant impact on price levels. The entry level to the market will see price rises fuelled by Help to Buy and the removal of Stamp Duty for first time buyers. The mid-range, family homes below £500,000 will remain competitive but see active sales if priced to reflect condition and position. Properties above £500,000 will see the lowest level of demand but equally, these properties tend to have the lowest availability. So long as prices hold up in the Home Counties then we will continue to see buyers moving west to get better value for money. These often have higher budgets but are cautious on how they spend them. Whatever the property market throws at us, Waymark plans to continue to build on its previous success. If you haven’t done so already, please drop into our new Faringdon office for a chat about all things property. Be it residential or commercial, sales or letting's, we are confident that we have the right solution for you!

Food For You!
I feel now is the time to have our food column back, since Lesley Holdship moved on from Hare in the woods, there has been a void, I really use to enjoy her ideas and of course loved making the dishes, they were straight forward and tasted great when finished! I am a total foody, so much so, I had to put myself on a strict diet and from the 24th July 17 till now, managed to loose 18.2kg, 2.86 stone. Yay!.. so now I can start eating again, introducing food slowly, minimum amount of carbs, well this works for me. I really have to stress, the food I eat now, tastes a lot better, as I’m much more selective and teaching myself how to cook. No junk food and sourcing all my meat properly, from Faringdon’s superb butcher Pete, of Pat Thomas! It’s not cheep to eat well as everything costs a little more, not forgetting the kitchen equipment which I now need to buy, as before I never really needed anything as my take away boxes were throw away, how unhealthy was I? Anyway the first thing I really enjoyed making and an amazing treat, after months of denying myself anything sweet, was a strawberry cheese cake! Which I will give you the recipe for below and the method. 2 packets of digestive biscuits for a thick base 200g butter, melted 1 vanilla pod (I used Vanilla Bean Paste, 1 tsp, much easer) 600g soft cheese (I used Philadelphia) 100g icing sugar 284ml pot double cream For the topping 400g punnet strawberries, halved 25g icing sugar Make the base in a none stick 23cm loose-bottomed tin, by putting the digestive biscuits in a plastic food bag and crushing using a rolling pin. Transfer the crumbs to a bowl, then pour over 200g melted butter. Mix thoroughly until the crumbs are completely coated. Tip them into the tin and press down into the base. Chill in the fridge. Make the filling: Place 600g soft cheese, 100g icing sugar and the vanilla in a bowl, then beat with an electric mixer until smooth. Tip in 284ml pot double cream and continue beating until the mixture is completely combined. Now spoon the cream mixture onto the biscuit base. Smooth the top of the cheesecake down with the back of a dessert spoon or spatula. Leave to set in the fridge. A couple of hours sets it! If I want it quickly, put it into the freezer for half an hour first, don’t forget it! Bring the cheesecake to room temperature, about 30 mins before serving. Purée half the 400g punnet strawberries in a blender or food processor with 25g icing sugar and 1 tsp water, then sieve. Pile the remaining strawberries onto the cake, then pour over purée. This is quite filling so not recommended after a big Sunday roast! See how easy it is to make it yourself, a much healthier option, than a box out of the freezer department! It really make you feel good to present something you have made yourself from scratch. If I can do it, anybody can! Lets see what next month brings! Enjoy Lou.

: A Vale of White Horse initiative to encourage people with diabetes to take more exercise. You might have noticed in January’s Advertiser an advert for StepWatchers. This is a new programme aimed to encourage people to take walking exercise to help to manage or prevent Type 2 diabetes. Ashley Chapman (Participation Coordinator) from Leisure services at the Vale of White Horse District Council is meeting up monthly with a group of people who want to prevent or manage diabetes. The group meets at Faringdon Leisure Centre on the first week of each month with sessions on Wednesday’s at 8pm and Saturday’s at 9am. The idea is to get people together to motivate each other to take exercise. A free pedometer to record your steps will be given out with the aim to gradually improve the number of steps you achieve each day. You will soon feel the benefits of walking to improve your health and wellbeing. If you would like to join the group contact Ashley on 07717714477 or email ashley.chapman@southandvale.gov.uk We look forward to hearing from you if diabetes is already a problem or if you are keen to prevent this health problem developing in future. The next meeting will be on: Saturday 3 February at 9am or Wednesday 7 February at 8pm. Then Saturday 3 March at 9am or Wednesday 7 March at 8pm, booking required

Healthy Living !
Are you sticking with your 2018 eating and exercise plan? Ÿ Have you finally addressed those parts of your life that needed changing? Ÿ Have you made those simple adjustments to your daily routine? Ÿ Have you started appreciating the good things about your life? If your answer is NO to the above, you are probably not the only one! Why I find my job so interesting is because although we all know what to do not many of us actually do it! Sometimes we need a gentle prod to finally take responsibility to achieve our goals. Looking at wellness holistically is key. Awareness of your state of mind as well as your current nutrition and exercise regime is crucial when you’re planning a way forward that you’ll be able to stick to. Ÿ Becoming confident with your body is a priority Ÿ Your weight is going to fluctuate and that’s OK Ÿ Be as healthy as you can, eat well and move well

I believe it is important to achieve wellness through understanding what the keys factors have been in a person’s life to drive them out of balance in the first place. Positive change cannot happen easily if we don’t know what caused the negative change in the first place. Whether it is working together through one to one training, with a partner, in custom group sessions or even massage and stretching, try and find what works for you – gaining confidence in your ability to succeed is the key to unlocking a myriad of possibilities and fun ways for you to feel better about your life. Finding someone to share your concerns with, or a group you can connect with is a great place to start. Change begins when you start a cycle of action and take responsibility for where you are now and by sharing your reasons, your concerns and your true goals, transformation will follow. Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ

By Monty Don I was grateful for the opportunity last month to reflect on the life and sudden death of our beloved dog Willow. January finds us in a new place, starting afresh. Part of the grieving process has involved us leaping straight into love again with Susie, our rescue cocker spaniel. We found her very soon after Willow’s death. We like to think that we all rescued each other.

Such is the devotion of mankind to its canine companions. A relationship as old as man, and as long has man has had a hearthrug to warm his feet at of an evening. And such is the relationship documented in Monty Don’s ‘Nigel’, a book about ‘his family and other dogs’. Gardener’s World fans will be able to relate to the cult of Nigel. His charming presence has graced our screens for a while. He only has to appear on the screen to set Twitter ablaze. He has his own Twitter account. Nigel is a very modern doggie celebrity. Monty has related that he never intended for Nigel to become a star. The sheer power of Nigel’s charisma took over quite unexpectedly, not at all by design. But us Brits love a dog story, and before long Nigel took over the show. He’s joined on screen by his sister Nellie, who has virtually no interest in being the star that Nigel has become. It’s hilarious how different they are. Don is an engaging author and relates his tales with charm and ease. He has never shied away from exposing his personal travails in writing. His battles with depression and illness have been well documented. He is just the same here, relating his history of dog ownership from the Seventies onwards. His tales are occasionally tear-jerking. His love for his companions is uncensored and we feel his raw love through the power of his prose. But Nigel is the star of the show. We learn about his life in a gradual discourse from pup, to pop-culture icon. Okay, maybe not pop-culture icon….certainly a paragon of the gardening fraternity. The most heart-in-mouth moment was when our canine hero breaks his back in a freak accident and hovers on the brink of permanent paralysis. That idol of all things animal Dr Noel Fitzpatrick otherwise known as Supervet in the Channel Four series – makes a short but vital cameo appearance and alters the course of a potentially disastrous occasion.
