During lockdown, Maggie Bohm taught herself how to print using a gel plate, acrylic paint and items from nature.

She now makes nature-inspired art pieces, which she prints in acrylic using plants and flowers, tree bark and cones and adds collage elements to her work as well as inked details and stamping.

These beautiful pieces are used to make a diverse selection of greeting cards and create hand-bound journals for writing, sketching and painting.

Maggie will be having her work – including some watercolour paintings – displayed in the Faringdon Tourist Information Centre in August as the ‘Artist of the Month’. In the meantime, she is excited to now be offering her work for sale under the name ‘The Button Box at No. 6’. Artz By American Dan ALL ABOUT THE ARTZ BY AMERICAN DAN Although born in Swindon, Dan Illingworth was raised in Florida, USA. When he returned to the UK, he became known as American Dan! Almost a year ago, he moved away from Swindon and set up home in Watchfield with his fiancée, Beth and the five children they share between them! The eldest is nine years old and the youngest is just three.

Both Dan and Beth are self-confessed petrol-heads. Dan is an ex-professional drift car driver and used to do demonstrations at local race tracks. They love their cars and both enjoy being out on track and regularly attending the track days at Castle Combe, near Chippenham.

In his working life, Dan has been a professional tattoo artist for 14 years and, earlier this year, decided it was about time he moved out of the tattoo studio he shared in Swindon to have his own space nearer to home. His new Faringdon studio at 11 London Street opened after the last lockdown lifted on 13th April.

As well as being a tattoo artist, Dan also sells his hand-painted canvases, skateboard decks and digitally-printed art. Dan said: “I wanted the new shop to be recognised for my artwork – after all, tattooing is an art form too. So, I decided to use my nickname for the shop and call it ‘The Artz by American Dan’ Fiancée, Beth, helps Dan run the shop and will start offering piercing's for customers from the beginning of July. Both have all the necessary First Aid and Covid-19 training necessary to do tattoos and piercing's and their certificates are displayed on the wall of their studio.

All tattoos and piercing's need to be pre-booked and they offer free consultations, which can also be booked via their Facebook page. All enquiries on the artwork are welcome on a walk-in basis.

Their aim is for the business to grow and be recognised as being different. “We didn’t want the studio to have the typical aggressive, dark-looking décor usually associated with tattoo studios,” said Dan. “We wanted it to be modern and welcoming to make everyone’s experience pleasant, personal and enjoyable.”

Currently, it’s just Dan and Beth working in the family-run business, but they do have exciting ideas for expansion in the future and plans for more items to be sold. In the meantime, they would like to support local artists by displaying their artwork on The Artz by American Dan website and/or put on display in their shop window. At the meeting of Tuckers Recreation Ground Trust on 2nd June two serious issues were raised

Our new County Councillor, Bethia Thomas, gave her first report. Cllr. Thomas highlighted that she was currently investigating why the heating system, scheduled to be fitted in the new Faringdon school, is gas and will need to be retrofitted in the future to make it energy efficient. The full report is available on our website, along with the District Councillors report, on our news page.

Our new Town Mayor, Cllr. Bentley also gave her first report.

Which detailed her first engagements as mayor which included presenting a lifetime achievement award at Shrivenham Military College and visits to the town market.

Offensive stickers had been placed around Faringdon. Tidy team has been asked to remove them.

Biffa Street cleaner John Miller was thanked for his excellent contribution towards keeping the Town tidy.

The trust received reports that children had been frightened by off lead dogs whilst playing at the park. It was also reported that dog poo is still a problem.

Dogs are currently welcome on leads and to be walked around the periphery of the park. The Trust will put signs up asking owners to respect the on-lead policy, pick up poo and to keep dogs off the football pitch.

The issues will be reviewed over the summer but if the rules are not adhered to the trust will consider a ban on dogs in the park, which would be very sad.

The Town Council is working hard to ensure that the Town Centre remains a place where the community can come together. With this in mind, and with the aim of protecting retail space, the council agreed: 1. To purchase the retail space in the former Volunteer, using CIL funding and reserves. Subject to satisfactory surveys and legal advice.

2. Investigate the purchase of the freehold for the whole building.

3. Seek grant funding for a refit.

4. Seek a tenant who brings community value to the town centre. Discussions are currently underway with Farcycles for a permanent location for their community bike repair shop.

The play park was vandalised last month. The vandalism cost almost £600 to repair. This has been reported to the police, if you have any information, or witness any anti-social behaviour please call 101.

Members of the Faringdon War Memorial Trust heard, at their meeting on June 2nd, that the renovations of the Old Town Hall are on track, to be completed in late August.

The work has been possible with a grant of £66,050 from FCC Communities Foundation, a not-forprofit business that awards grants for community through the Landfill Communities Fund.

The council has been informed that an election has not been called to fill our current councillor vacancy. We will therefore co-opt a councillor at the next meeting on 13th July. It has been a hectic few months for me, and I would like to explain how the recent elections have changed my roles at each of the councils. I continue in my role as a town councillor, as well as, one of your district councillors in partnership with David Grant.

With my success in the May elections, I am now also your representative at Oxfordshire County Council. This may seem like a lot to take on, but actually it really helps to have a unified voice across all three levels of council, working with officers at the town council to make sure that we get the best deal for Faringdon in all aspects of our lives. At county level these include issues relating to education, health and social care, roads and highways, the fire service, and libraries; at district we are concerned with planning, rubbish collection, and our leisure centre and parks.

Town council has a role in all of these. As you can see, councils are important to all our lives and the teams at each council, officers and elected representatives, do work hard for Faringdon, and I am grateful that you have put your trust in me to tackle issues at all three levels of council.

Faringdon Town Council has teamed up CTiF with Earth and Faith to promote a tree Churches Together in Faringdon planting campaign that everyone can join EARTH&FAITH in. Help us plant lots of trees for our future - for this town, and for the planet.

Our aim is to start planting in November, just as the world’s leaders begin the vital Climate Conference in Glasgow. All life on the planet is in danger from global warming and the disasters it brings. One big thing we can do that really helps is to plant more trees. Earth & Faith, with support from Faringdon Town Council, will provide all the details you need to make your plans and apply for your trees, ready for the winter planting season. The trees can be for your own garden, or a larger project. There are FREE trees to be had for schools and community groups. There is also the option, if you wish, to dedicate your tree(s) to the Queen’s Green Canopy campaign, planting trees in honour of Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Which Wine?

This month I have decided to revisit a subject we have talked about before. What wine to take to friends or family when invited round. When I wrote about this a couple of years ago, I suggested sticking with Merlot for red and Sauvignon blanc for white and that is still good advice. This time though I want to give you some more options, to help you give something you feel is perhaps a bit more interesting.

So let’s dive into the choices for white wine. From France, Australia and California, you get a good choice of Chardonnay wines. Watch out for ones that say matured in oak as this delivers a creamy vanilla flavour which is not to everyone's taste. Burgundy white is a good choice from Tesco and Waitrose or Tesco Australian Chardonnay. All these will deliver a dry wine with plenty of sharp citrus fruit flavours softened with peaches and melon. Serve chilled and keep the bottle cool as you drink it. If you can, take it out of the fridge 15 - 20 minutes before pouring as this will get to around 12C, which is when the flavours are most pronounced.

Another interesting choice is the Spanish wine called Albarino, which comes from North West Spain primarily. It delivers a pleasant dry wine with a nice zesty tang after you sip it. There is a Waitrose own label version which delivers reasonable value and Aldi offer a slightly better price at similar quality.

Alternatively, try Verdicchio from Italy. This is another white that delivers nice citrus tastes and is even better value, plus it comes in a curvy bottle which is distinctive.

On the red front, I am always happy to receive a Cote du Rhones Villages wine, these can run from bargain wines to fairly expensive. the price is driven by several factors, but you can still get good value by looking for a Village wine that also mentions a village name. The wine will deliver a nice smell of black cherry, which is enhanced by blackcurrant flavours on drinking. Most wines in this region are made with Grenache grapes, but a significant number also add Syrah and Mouverdre grapes. If you want to make an impression, try for a Cru version or named village on the bottle. One of my favourites is from Waitrose - Carrianne which was recently given the Cru classification, indicating a really good wine. All the supermarkets offer something in this group of wines, so it is easy to select something to match your budget.

Another lovely red wine is the pinot noir wines from Germany.

This may sound odd, but the Sainsbury version is a lovely wine.

When you pour pinot noir, it looks a bit pale in colour or even a bit thin. Keep going and the tastes will deliver way beyond expectations from the colour. You will get nice cherry and blackberry flavours with no tannin, but a good depth of flavour and mouth feel.

Faringdon Bell Ringers

“Bell ringers throughout England are gearing up for 21st June.” Did I really say that? Well 21st June never happened did it? No more dates, just data! The Rule of Six has allowed us to ring the six small bells to start Sunday services but that hardly cuts the mustard as they say.

Did you know, a bell is essentially a thick bronze ring (soundbow) suspended on a thin bronze waist. When the soundbow is struck it becomes oval and then springs back to oval at right angles.

This is the vibration that makes the nominal note (All Saints tenor bell strikes E). The thicker the ring, the quicker it springs back, the higher the note. The waist vibrates more slowly than the soundbow and produces the hum, an octave below the nominal in a well tuned bell.

English church bells are tuned as a set (a ring) and are struck by clappers as they swing to the upright position. They can’t ring a tune but with practice they can be kept striking in the same order or minor variations (changes). Changing the order slightly every time the bells turn over produces the unique sound of English bell ringing.

25th July is now the light at the end of the tunnel. Let’s hope.

Sitting?

Don’t sit too much!

We are all increasingly aware that working for home, although it has its benefits, can mean we are sat at our desk for hour after hour without a break. Early starts and working late into the evening is commonplace. We take an occasional break for a coffee and a piece of toast then go back to the chair. At the end of the day we often feel too tired to go to the gym or exercise at home. It takes motivation or a PT session in the diary to get most of us exercising!

Have you thought about matching your activity levels to how sedentary you are during the day? The more we need to sit, the more often we need to put in activity breaks.

The British Journal of Sports Medicine suggests that movement frequency is a key factor for fitness, not just movement intensity. Light activities can play an important role in keeping you healthy.

Researchers have found that 3 minutes of moderate-tovigorous activity or 12 minutes of light activity to every hour of sitting is beneficial, rather than the recommended 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise - especially if it is condensed into just one or two training sessions.

Interspersing light activities, such a walking, a bit of housework and preparing meals, all count towards the total activity for the day.

I have always advocated that we should move as much as we can. It is what our bodies are designed to do! Part of my job as a personal trainer is to encourage those I see to move more on a regular basis and not rely on 1 or 2 hours a week to get results. Our daily activity habits can mean the difference between staying healthy, upbeat and able to achieve our goals, to feeling less motivated and suffering from the aches and pains that come with sitting all day at our desk, or lounging on a couch all evening.

We all know that vigorous exercise is great for our health, and now we know that moderate to light activity is beneficial too.

As more research is being done we’re realising that it is increasingly important. So try to break up your day with a short walk in the sun or even some light housework, especially if you spend a lot of time being sedentary.

Remember - researchers are now recommending a mix of 3 to 1, (3 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity or 12 minutes of light activity for every 1 hour of sitting).

However, other people’s lives seem so much more interesting. This is undoubtedly true for Vanessa Frake; who published her memoirs ‘The Governor’ on 15 April 2021.

Frake spent 27 years working in the prison services. This book gives a fantastic insight into prison life from Frake’s perspective as guard and ultimately the Governor. The relationships she had with the inmates, her co-workers and daily prison life. The prison uses its discretion of which prison you are sent to.

Our introduction to Frakes takes place in a taxi on her way to the male-dominated HMP Wormwoods Scrubs for her first day. Already hating the prospect of working in a male prison and hiding any nerves.

In humorous flashbacks, Frakes takes us to some of the women’s prisons she has worked in with stories of daily life.

For example, how Myra Hindley made cups of tea for arriving guests. How Rosemary West sat crocheting and chatting congenially to another prisoner, while the television announcer gave updates on her case. She didn’t say a word.

There are some fascinating stories about inmates and the heart-breaking truths of being away from family for long periods. Then the description of clanging keys, door slamming closed and footsteps along corridors; truly eerie. Frake also describes the ingenious ways prisoners try and smuggle drugs into the prison and the lengths guards go to stop drugs from getting in. We also hear about the extraordinary ways prisoners smuggle mobile phones into prisons (sometimes two or three at a time. Eye-watering).

Frank ended her career with PTSD and an MBE and now makes cakes in a bakery. This book is undoubtedly a page-turner and written as if you were sitting down with her and just having a chat and a cup of tea. If you decide to read this book, put two days aside for total indulgence.

If you are reading this before 1st July, there's still time to sign up to my Zoom pre-COP26 summit via my website.

Significant change is being proposed for Oxfordshire by the independent Boundary Commission. They say create a seventh seat in the county at Bicester; move the Faringdon, Kingston Bagpuize, Stanford and Watchfield & Shrivenham wards from the Wantage constituency into the Witney constituency; move the Marcham division from Wantage into Oxford West and Abingdon; and move the Sandford and the Wittenhams division from Henley into Wantage, which will get an official new name: Didcot and Wantage (I have continued my predecessor’s habit of including Didcot in the name but it isn’t official!).

The purpose is to give each MP roughly the same number of electors as, at the moment, constituencies in England range from 55,000 to 100,000 people. Wantage and Didcot is 91,000, so I knew they would propose a chunk being taken off somewhere; the proposal would make it 71,000. We’re strongly urged not to give an opinion as these are proposals subject to consultation, but you can give yours up until 2nd August on their website.

I have launched a new project with my colleague, Claire Coutinho, to research and propose practical recommendations to close what we’re calling the Opportunity Gap for young people from different backgrounds and areas of the country. We’ll look at everything from the resources parents have (financial and non-financial) through to the recruitment processes employers use, praising those doing good work to help and calling out those who could do more.

Readers will know my pre-politics career was entirely spent working with disadvantaged young people and in the postCovid world, it’s a topic that is more important than ever.

One of the most valuable things I think I can do in my job is raise issues that affect constituents in the House of Commons.

Recently, I’ve been pleased to raise a series of concerning issues, including the case of a constituent who has been waiting 3 years for her rape case to reach court, and what looks to be a worrying rise in the prescribing of anti-psychotic drugs to dementia patients who don’t have a diagnosis of dementia. I also took the opportunity to raise the lack of GP services to serve our growing population – and am pleased the Health Minister has agreed to meet to discuss this further. On this topic, my debate on the performance of Royal Mail is this month and I will put my speech – and other local issues I raise in the meantime – on my Facebook page www.facebook.com/davidjohnston4wantage A few weeks ago I was delighted to become the first patron of the Childrey charity, Team Mikayla, set up by the inspiring 14 year old Mikayla, who has had a long and difficult fight against Cancer. I was delighted to subsequently hear they received a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, alongside other great local organisations such as the Ray Collins Charitable Trust in Wantage and Farcycles in Faringdon. In other good news, Anna Richards of Maymessy in West Challow received the Prime Minister’s Points of Light award too. Congratulations to them all.

Country Life

What a fabulous few weeks of sunshine we had last month that I’m hopeful will continue into June bringing us more flowers, blue skies and the ability to spend time outside enjoying our gardens and local parks. I know our gardens were a little bit behind when it came to flowering but now that we’ve had a few weeks of sun and a few days of cold weather and rain I am hopeful things will start to bounce back.

If you follow me on @hercountryliving you might remember seeing that a few months ago I planted my potatoes, which I’m excited to harvest this month now the flowers have started to blossom. Along with the potatoes I’ve been growing a range of produce such as carrots, tomatoes and spring onions as well as chillies, sweet peas for scent, and a wide variety of herbs which have been exciting to grow. I would love to know what you’ve been up to in the garden too.

The majority of my plants have all done extremely well (for the most part) however, my spring onions failed me twice due to nesting rooks and the second time hungry slugs! The first time the rooks got to them they were planted in biodegradable hemp pots which the rooks decided to use for nesting material, this meant the pot was split in two with all my seedlings falling out. The second time I went to plant them the slugs got to them, so I’m going to give it a third and final attempt again this month with the help of copper tape round my pot to ward off any unwanted visitors who fancy their chances at my vegetables.

Once I’ve harvested some goodies I’m hoping to have some friends over for a picnic in the garden and enjoy some much deserved alfresco dining. July is also the month you might start to see the first of the dahlias and hollyhocks start to bloom as well as hydrangeas, delphiniums and previously mentioned sweet peas!

Meeting – Thursday 10th June The Ecology of Earthworms - Dr David Jones In June we were entertained by Dr David Jones and his talk was all about earthworms. David is an entomologist specialising in soil ecology working at the Natural History Museum in London.

David began his talk by explaining that scientists have been studying earthworms for many years and Charles Darwin was the first person to do any quantitative research on this subject and we know that his findings were correct. Modern research proves that when farmers have a good supply of earthworms, then there is a 25% boost in production and David began by explaining this idea.

He told us that in the UK there were 27 species of earthworms and three ecological groups. There are those that are shallow burrowing and feed on soil called Endogeic. Those that are deep burrowing that feed on decaying matter and soil (Anecic) and the worms that are found on the surface which feed on decaying matter (Epigeic). David explained that very few animals can digest soil and earthworms have a very special gut which is full of microbes which help them breakdown the tiny particles. Earthworms are hermaphrodites, meaning an individual worm has both male and female reproductive organs but they still need to find a mate to reproduce.

Why are earthworms important, was the question David asked his audience. He mentioned how they are vital in maintaining the soil structure by tunnelling and burrowing, improving the health of the soil through aeration, improving drainage and bringing nutrients to the surface. An interesting fact was that in a pastural field which has been grazed by cows the weight of earthworms in that field will weigh more than all the cows in that field!

The modern methods used by farmers to encourage the number of earthworms in the soil has been shown to increase crop yields. Deep ploughing where the soil is turned over is very damaging to the earthworm population as they become chopped up and displaced and eaten by birds. Basically, minimum or no tillage is a better farming method, so the less that the soil is disturbed the more earthworms are noted.

Faringdon is a Market Town. During the lockdown, Faringdon was almost a ghost town. I regularly visited Blessed Hugh Catholic Church on Marlborough Street.

Then I continued my prayers on a Rotary bench in front of a short History of Faringdon that was posted on a Black Poplar tree.

The town of the past appeared in my imagination. I could hear the bleating, squealing, mooing, clucking of animals. And their putrid odour too. People were shouting, counting, auctioning, and buying. The Town crier with his 100 decibels voice announced to folks about the wars of the Royalists and Parliamentarians, volunteers for the WWI to WWII, the deaths and coronations of monarchs. The policemen were directing traffics, arresting cheaters, thieves, traitors and putting them to gaol for the sheriff to send them to the gallows or ship them down under. The bobbies also looked out for cruel treatment of animals. Then the tintinnabulation coming from All Saints church joined the noisy crowd. O God of the Past, Present and Future!

Now lockdown is easing, I see real people around and about.

The Tuesday market day is extending to Saturdays. You no longer smell the herds but the meat, milk, eggs, bread, fruits, coffee, and many more local products. Time has moved.

Markets and trading has been globalise, but Faringdon has kept its local market a venue for sustainability and market ethics. In big supermarkets, buyers are tempted to hoard and waste goods.

Since The Churches Together declared Faringdon as a Fairtrade town 40 years ago, they have become a voice crying in the wilderness for people to live simply and buy ethically. How and what we decide to buy can affect the world climate, poverty and exploitation of the poor and children, the welfare of animals.

Arts Festival Returns to Langford Following the huge success of its launch event, The Langford Arts Festival is returning to the Oxfordshire village from Saturday 31st July– Sunday 1st August The Festival will feature the work of over 40 amateur and professional artists, ranging from water colour, acrylic and oil paintings, prints and photography through to sculpture, glass and pottery. There will be something to suit any budget; works from sought after artists for collectors, through to pieces for people who just want to find something special for their home.

The event is the idea of Ginny Bushell, who lives in Langford and is herself a keen amateur artist.

“When we ran our first Festival two years ago, we thought it might prove quite popular but nothing prepared us for the volumes of people and artists who wanted to get involved.

“With us now gradually coming out of lockdown, it seemed the perfect moment to welcome people back to our fabulous Festival. What could be better than to be in the fresh Cotswold air, in a picturesque village, looking at and hopefully buying some lovely original art.”

Langford is a classic Cotswold village and will provide the perfect backdrop to the Festival. St Matthew’s Church in Langford, which dates back to the 11th Century, is the atmospheric setting where the bulk of the artists’ work will be displayed and sold. There will also be art on show at a number of other locations in the village, enabling visitors to experience all that the village has to offer.

If people want to watch and try as well as buy, there will be plenty of live art-based activities taking place in Langford during the Festival. These include artists sketching and painting about the village, art installations, and arts and crafts for visitors to try such as a blacksmith offering a metalwork experience, plaster plaque making, pottery and more!

The Festival will also auction off for charity a signed limited-edition print by Jake Chapman, the celebrated British artist, who together with his brother Dinos forms the famous, and often shocking, art duo, the Chapman Brothers.

With homemade cakes, light lunches and refreshments served throughout, plus a bar serving wine and local beers, Langford Arts Festival will provide the perfect day out for both families and serious art enthusiasts.

Set in West Oxfordshire, Langford (GL7 3LN) is on the Oxfordshire/Gloucestershire border, half an hour from both Cheltenham and Oxford.

Adult entry costs £2 while children (under 16) are FREE. The Festival runs from 11am- 5pm throughout the weekend, finishing on Sunday 1st August 2021.

‘Faringdon Community College were lucky enough to be offered the chance to host a display by the RAF Falcons Parachute Team on June 16th. The Falcons are celebrating their 60 year anniversary and we were one of the first to see their new display.

The Falcons spent time with the students afterwards, answering their questions about RAF life and even ended up playing a game of football. And the school won!

The Falcons were also interested to meet one of our students, Ellie, whose grandfather was a member of the parachute team in the 1970’s. Ellie was able to show them her grandfather’s log book and photos from his time with the team.

A big thank you to the whole team for such a wonderful morning, especially to Ben who organised this for us.

Boom is a professional photographer, originating from Thailand, and has lived in Faringdon for over 18 years. She was a student at Faringdon Community College and then went on to achieve a BA Honours Degree in Fine Art Photography from Plymouth University. After graduating, Boom returned to the local area to establish herself as a freelance photographer, whilst simultaneously working as a chef in the family-run Thai restaurant that was based in Faringdon’s old Post Office building.

Three years ago, Boom started her own photography company, WBoomS Photography, which is based in Faringdon and covers Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. Boom, who is married and has a 10 month old son, said she loves to photograph people, places and nature to capture the emotion of her subject ‘in the moment of happening’. “Exploring urban environments is one of my favourite ways to practice my passion,” explained Boom. “I love strolling through the alleyways and streets of towns and cities taking photographs as the huge variation of colours, textures and natural lighting provide constant challenges to the development of my photographic skill.”

Of course, getting out and about has not always been possible during the lockdown's of the past 15 months and Boom has found this time challenging. However, the arrival of her first child has provided a welcome distraction and an excellent little focus for her camera. Boom does have some more energetic passions that keep her busy – most notable is Slack-lining – a balance discipline that involves walking, bouncing and often falling off a long, thin, trampoline/tightrope. Boom and her husband used to run a successful community group on the Folly Hill, in which they offered free Slack-lining tuition to willing thrill-seekers!

Now that Covid-19 restrictions are lifting, Boom can focus on developing her photography services once again. The peak season for the type of natural outdoor photography that features in Boom’s work runs between May-September, as these are the months that provide optimal natural lighting.

As a photographer, Boom prides herself in providing her clients with quality photographs and a positive photographic experience. She explains: “I think it helps that I am a pretty relaxed and friendly people-person, putting clients at ease. This is key to capturing the intimate and playful emotions that exist within family relationships.”
