Jane was High Sheriff of Oxfordshire in 2017 when she helped found YoCo - www. yoco.online and is now the Chair of the Oxfordshire Homeless movement whilst Mike is a retired photographer who is known for his award winning photography of child trafficking in West Africa. They have chosen to sleep in the winter cold of the seven church-yards as throughout history, churches have been a refuge in times of need, so it seems to be wholly appropriate to use them as a sheltering place in the period before Christmas when the recollection of a child born in the bleak surrounds of a stable, serves as a timely reminder of the problems facing many young people today. The money raised will split evenly between YoCo and Oxford Aspire - www.aspireoxfordshire.org - who are seeking to support young people in a world where cuts in social care means that it is more essential than ever that we support and encourage the younger generation, because as Nelson Mandela said, ‘they are the rock on which our future will be built’. So if, like so many people you contribute to charities at Christmas please support their effort and commitment by making a donation to www.aspireoxfordshire.org/appeal/mikes-rough-sleep For further details and any information please email mikesroughsleep@gmail.com

Sally’s Summary
Budget 2022.23 - Have your say! Due to unforeseen circumstances the public meeting to give residents the opportunity to comment on the forthcoming years spending needed to be postponed.
Planning & Highways Wednesday 27th November The town council were very disappointed to learn that development at Rogers Concrete, Sandshill, Faringdon was approved on Wednesday 20th October 2021 by the Vale of White Horse District Council (VoWHDC), despite strong objections and representation from the town. Members expressed concern that the VoWHDC were not listening to the town and were not considering local need. D/Cllr. Grant was asked to feed this back to VoWHDC. The committee will recommend to full council that a formal letter should be written to the Chief Executive of VoWHDC setting out concerns around this decision and requesting an independent investigation be undertaken. D/Cllr. Grant was asked what the master plan was for Faringdon. Depending on the response from the letter, it was asked if the town could have an explanation how planning decisions are taken, how these decisions fit with local need and the Neighbourhood Plan and what weight our plan has when decisions are taken. Seven planning applications were considered, no objections were registered. The committee decided to apply to VoWHDC to list the FAZE site on Highworth Rd as an asset of community value, along with the Infant School.

Women’s Rugby is officially here Faringdon Rugby Union Football Club (FRUFC) has a sponsored women’s team and a new kit officially! We can’t thank the local business community enough. As soon as we advertised the sponsorship opportunities through our Facebook page, we had secured three amazing sponsors that evening. This meant that straight away, we were able to purchase the kit for our newest team members. The official front sponsor is local human resources and learning & development consultancy – Highlight People, founded by Debbie Molyneux and Adam Pickford. Debbie is also a member of the squad. The back sponsor is also our media partner – The Advertiser, owned by Lou Guthrie. Our third sponsor is new local steak restaurant, Floyds. Welcome to the rugby club family! If any other local businesses are interested in supporting the club, please do contact David (Chuck) Norris. faringdon-rugby@outlook.com Our senior team, the Silverbacks are now officially at the top of the league. On 30 October they beat local rivals Grove 18-16. Then on 6 November, they had an impressive win, 36-24, against Aylesbury which firmly put them top. Well done team! The team also supported Movember during November – some interesting moustaches on show, along with the professional players on the Autumn Internationals tour! Our junior teams have been enjoying playing some proper matches this Autumn. We are still on the hunt to recruit more U15 and U16. So don’t be shy, if any teenagers out there want to join, we are a really friendly club. If you haven’t already, do get your tickets for another families afternoon. This time it is very muched Christmas themed. It will be held at the Corn Exchange on Sunday 19th December. The cost is £10, and tickets can be purchased through GMS.

Take your pick but we’re really just about back to normal though we do make sure the very little widow is open and the extractor fan on. As well as Christian, local and national events we ring for personal occasions which most frequently means weddings. We’ve now rung to celebrate two since lock down. Lucy, the Vale ringers’ secretary, organised us a mini tour to three churches with well ventilated ground floor ringing rooms to get people back to the idea of meeting other ringers. Ringing is a very sociable hobby. Ringing on your own would be pretty boring as you’ve only got one note. All bells, towers and ringers are unique so meeting new people at new towers is one of the attractions of ringing. Some towers, not to mention ringers, can be really exciting, or scary ! We rang the bells half-muffled before the parade on Remembrance Day as a mark of respect.

01367 810346 A soft pad is put on one side of the clapper to make a haunting echo. Some of us joined the Shellingford ringers to ring half-muffled for David Millikin’s funeral. He had been St Faith’s organist for 45 years. We were invited to help at Dorchester Abbey where the bishop was leading a Birinus service. St. Birinus was the first Bishop of Dorchester, converting the king of the West Saxons to Christianity in 635AD. On a Sunday morning we were pleased to welcome Megan, who used to ring with us, and her baby Freya. With Christmas coming as usual there will be extra occasions to ring. I hope we can raise a side to ring in the New Year but if we don’t that’s a reason for more young people to join the band before next year. Don’t wait until November. Whether or not you would like to try ringing, we would love to welcome you to visit Sunday service ringing (9.45-10.30 am) or Monday practice (7.30-9.00 pm) in All Saints tower or you can contact us by emailing faringdonringers@gmail. com Lisa and Yolanda are now learning the basic skills and we look forward to welcoming them to ring with us soon.

Footsteps of the Fallen Matt Dixon Podcast have certainly opened the world of voice publishing to anyone who has a passion, time and understanding of modern information technology. This is certainly true for the historian, genealogist and researcher Matt Dixon. Matt has a passion for the Great War. As a result, three times a month, he takes us on a reflective walk through the battlefields of the World War I reciting the stories of the men and women who have given their lives for us.

For example, in the episode ‘The Sepoys on the Seafront’. We start our journey on the 22 October 1915 on the seafront in Brighton. A young lady placed a telephone call to the Brighton Constabulary, stating there was a disturbance on the seafront. A collection of men were waving sabres, chanting, and singing. They were wearing long robes, had bare feet, and purple turbans with long, full beards. When the Police arrived, they discovered that the townsfolk of Brighton were swapping cigarettes for Chapatis with the India soldiers who were cooking their evening meal. They later sent the Indian Army to the Western Front in Belgium. We are then told the story of Khudadar Khan, the first Indian soldier to win the Victoria Cross. It also introduced us to the miracle that is Indian Treacle, issued daily to each soldier, the common name being Opium. In the episode ‘The Teaspoon of Talana’ we learn about the events of the 6th July 1915. Where over 600 men died, and thousands wounded in the battle around the Belgian Village of Boesinghe, a German strong point called Fortin 17. One Hundred years later a team of amateur archaeologies unearth a teaspoon that belonged to one of the fallen. Matt has a way of bringing these stories to life. Everyday items, like a teaspoon, seem to have so much more meaning when you know its history. The stories told in this podcast are illuminating, informative and the human context is very moving. I would highly recommend this podcast. MAKING THE WRIGHT CHOICE WHEN IT COMES TO TRAINING Sarah Wright has lived in Longcot with her husband, Chris for around 18 years. They have one daughter, Jessica, who lives in Shropshire with her husband, Nick and their two children. Sarah loves visiting them as spending time with her family makes her happy and gives her a welcome distraction from work. Sarah grew up in the Faringdon area and went to Faringdon secondary school. After leaving school, she trained as a chef which, at the time, was her dream job especially as her work background was in hospitality and retail. Then, about 20 years ago, she ‘fell into’ her first training role hasn’t looked back since! In August 2020, Sarah started up Wright Choice Training after her previous employment came to an end due to the pandemic. It was a difficult time to start up a business due to Covid restrictions and not being able to deliver face-to-face training. However, she now believes that if she can survive the pandemic as a business owner, then she can survive almost anything!

Through Wright Choice Training, Sarah delivers training to predominantly the construction industry, but also offers general health and safety, food safety, first aid and mental health first aid courses as well. She said: “I pride myself on my level of service and I am passionate about my ability to offer nationally accredited training that is of real benefit both to the candidate and the employee.” As a one-woman business, Sarah can make bespoke courses for clients and is able to be very competitive, which she believes sets her apart from the competition. She is currently doing most of her work for training providers and this is an area of the business that she would like to grow by offering open courses. The courses Sarah offers can be delivered in the workplace and include •

Over the coming weeks I’m going to be doing lots of festive crafts and wanted to inspire you to try some too! You’ll remember if you read my article in September, Jon and I got engaged so I have decided to try and bake our wedding cake as well as lots of crafty decorations for the venue next year (dried flowers, leaves, branches and all sorts of pretty natural things) and have already got well into planning for it!

I think it’s really good fun to craft and bake, so if you’re anything like me and enjoy that too you should sign up to my website www.hercountryliving.com where I share lots of recipes, crafting tips and ideas on things to do at home. Crafting activities you could try… Wreath making: I’ve made a few at home over the last year but wouldn’t say I was a professional, so I booked my Mum and I onto a course this year to make something fun and festive for our doors in time for Christmas as I always love a wreath and think they look beautiful on your front door. Homemade advents: Whilst you can easily just buy advent calendars (chocolate / gin / tea and all sorts) from the shops I always find they lack a bit of personality and having the same thing every day for 25 days can get really repetitive (for me anyway) so I have filled a little basket with some The Advertiser | page 17 | gifts for Jon this year. I would suggest if you’re |going to do this, budget yourself and try to look for something that is environmentally friendly that will be used. I do add in a few edible treats here and there.

Homemade wrapping paper: Most wrapping papers you can buy from the supermarket have plastics in or end up ripping really easily and can get pretty crumpled by the time Christmas rolls around. So what I ended up doing this year Cheaper than a skip, and we do the work! was buying a really good quality roll of brown paper from a Registered Licence craft shop and stenciling my Waste own patterns on it, or leaving it Clearance brown and topping with paper bows and ribbons.

Wine Made Easy
| The Advertiser Advertiser || page page 20 16|| Obviously Cava is a great option for fizz in the party season, with similar flavours to champagne, which is not surprising as the same method is used for producing both wines. I find the supermarket own brands are as good as other brand names, so you can hunt down the best value easily. And we can’t forget Prosecco with Tesco’s finest being my favourite.
Party Wines!
When buying wines for a party, I generally stick to a rule of picking easy drinking wines with good flavours, light tannin and not too acidic. So the classic red to go for is a Merlot, with nice black fruits and low tannin, plus enough acidity from the fruit to give a good mouth feel when drinking it. I have found Chilean Merlot to be great value this year, The Casillero del Diablo Merlot is a good easy drinking wine, or you could go for the McGuigan Reserve Merlot, another fine drinking wine from Australia. A slightly different wine is the Feuerheerd’s Anchor Wine Reserva Douro DOC from Sainsbury’s, which has a lovely full body, but only a hint of tannin, very nice to drink on it’s own or with a meal. As it is the season for parties, I wanted to share a few interesting wines with you that will be welcome at any party. If you are in the mood for champagne, but don’t want to spend the £25 - £50 for big name brands, then you can look at the Aldi and Lidl offerings, which always get good reviews. I have a preference for Etienne Dumont from Sainsbury. This wine is often around £16, but if you are lucky and get the 25% discount offer, it is a real bargain. It delivers a mostly acidic mix of lemon, lime, apple and perhaps pears. The other one to watch out for in the 25% discount is at Tesco, their Premier Cru is usually £21. It delivers both the citrus and green apple flavours plus a light brioche flavour, which is a result of the longer time maturing in bottles.
WE LOOK AFTER YOU! FREE COURTESY CAR, MODERN WITH AIR CONDITIONING
Heading over to the white wines, pretty much any Sauvignon blanc will hit the spot. Marlborough wines from New Zealand are good, but the French have recently caught up with Loire wines giving similar flavours. If you want something a little different, then try a Spanish Albarino wine, which uses different grapes, but is similar in taste to the Sauvignon blanc. Again, the Chilean and Australian versions are tasting very vibrant this year. If you want to try something different, have a look at the Chardonnay wines from Australia particularly, or the Macon wines of Burgundy which give plenty of apple and pear flavours, plus nice acidity, just not as acidic as the sauvignon blanc. I hope you have a lovely time and get to see many friends and family over the festive season and please drink responsibly while enjoying your wine.

HAZEL INTERIORS Specialist Designers & Makers of Curtains & Soft Furnishings
Just over a year ago, Rebekah Pugh lost her dear 95 year old friend and neighbour, Molly Day. Molly was an excellent flower arranger and an active member of the Flower Guild in Faringdon. Rebekah and Molly spent many hours together sharing their love of flowers. After Molly’s death, Rebekah, a wife and mother of three, decided to set up Flowers from Molly in memory of her friend. The aim was to deliver and give away 95 bunches of flowers or flower arrangements – one for every year of Molly’s life – to someone who needed a little bit of cheer and love. It was Rebekah’s way of keeping alive Molly’s memory and giving back to a community she loves. Following the Flowers from Molly project, people started asking Rebekah if they could buy her bouquets and flower arrangements whilst, at the same time, Rebekah had also started another project which was to care for graves in and around Faringdon. As these two ventures seemed to go hand-in-hand, Rebekah decided that it was probably the right time to start the business she had often dreamed of. Lockdown and the pandemic also helped as the spur that Rebekah needed to make her business dreams come true. Rebekah’s grave care and floral tribute service can take the pressure off caring for, maintaining or tidying up graves or memorials. She also offers beautiful floral tributes to adorn the grave, funeral flowers, wedding flowers and bouquets for other occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries. Rebekah calls this new grave care service, Go tell the bees, to observe an age-old tradition relating to bees and death. According to folklore, it is believed that, if bees are not formally informed of a death, they may stop producing honey, leave the hive or die themselves. Telling the bees can take many forms: from singing to the bees, knocking on the hive to get their attention and making an announcement or draping the hives in black cloth. Previously, Rebekah had worked with homelessness and, more recently, for Faringdon Town Council as the Deputy Town Clerk. Her new business, Go tell the bees, allows Rebekah to work from home, but still enables her to show care and support for other people. Looking to the future, Rebekah said: “I would like to grow and develop even more, work in collaboration with other local businesses and get to the stage where I can take on staff.” Find out more about Rebekah Pugh and Go tell the bees at www.gotellthebees.co.uk or contact Rebekah on 07841

Healthy Living!
|| The Advertiser | page 25 23 ||
Healthy Living Wellness starts at home Christmas and New Year can be a challenging time, not only financially but emotionally and physically too. We can be pushed to our limits in several ways. Social and dietary pressures can lead to stress in our body and, along with changes to our routines, can impact our motivation and our ability to maintain our nutritional standards. At New Year we’re flooded with tricks and tips promising quick ways to improve our health and well being. Adopting a healthy lifestyle that fosters our physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being is key to overcoming these pressures and should start at home. What we do in addition to our gym sessions, mindfulness courses or short term diet regimes is important to how we feel long term. I have had several interesting discussions over the past few weeks with existing clients and new clients, as to what we need to do to keep well, maintain a healthy weight, and keep motivated and positive. I can’t emphasize enough that what we do at home makes the most difference to our health. Being busy, organised, active, and keeping in touch with friends and family all help to keep you well. Walking the dog, stroking the cat, strolling through town, having friends around for a chat and a cup of tea, keeps us active and connected. One client said to me that having someone ‘to check in with’ keeps her on track with her fitness. As a personal trainer that is part of my job. I often act as a sounding board for ideas, share problems and help keep clients motivated. Understanding that there is a social side to health sometimes gets forgotten, and having someone to ‘off load’ to or ‘ask questions of‘, or even to ‘be accountable to’, helps immensely. Someone who cares or is at least interested in you, your concerns and the barriers preventing you from achieving your goals can give you a fresh perspective and put you back on track. Start by organising your home life, or clearing out the negative influences around you. Buy in healthy foods, incorporate daily physical activity and remember to rest. Downtime balances your activity helps to keep you well and happy. Try it – January is the time for new beginnings! What have I tried this month?: HUEL (Human Fuel) nutritionally complete food •
Why – I was given a packet from a client to try!
•
Claim - It is a nutritionally complete food available in powder, liquid, bar or grain forms. Every meal contains a balance of all 26 essential vitamins and minerals, protein, essential fats, carbs, fibre and phytonutrients in a single product
•
How does it work? – it’s basically a powder that you mix with water to get a complete meal
•
How much does it cost? - costs vary but around £25 per pack for approx. 7 meals (although it does come in various forms)
Points to note – it could be used to replace one or two meals each week as part of a healthy balanced diet. Eating is not just about nutrition it is about the emotional benefit of sitting around a table with family and friends. Eating should be a social event as well as fuel stop. Personally, I would rather make my own smoothies with natural ingredients from my fridge or fruit bowl. Or put together a meal from scratch. Really how difficult can it be??? I can see its appeal for some who don’t want to think about food. For me it has been a fun experiment but I shall stick to normal meals with real food, - even if it might take a little longer to prepare. David Johnston MP Parish News
Mellors MellorsMOT MOT and andGarage GarageLtd Ltd Drive Well For Less Drive Well For Less
I have no second job or outside earnings, so there are no allegations about me breaking the lobbying rules or using my parliamentary office for activities that earn me money on the side. But, while I’m not directly affected by the allegations being made at members of all parties, I want to defend my (still relatively new) profession. People who break the rules should be punished, but the vast majority of us have obeyed all the rules. No-one wins when MPs themselves push the line that we’ve got to be restrained from chasing outside money so that we focus on our constituencies; almost all of us have been focusing on our constituencies seven days a week. Talented people are already put off becoming MPs by the long hours, abuse, increasing personal risk and the association with the expenses scandal which most of us were not involved in – the tone of the current debate is making this worse. I attended several activities to mark Remembrance Day this year, beginning with laying a poppy on a GWR train on its way to London on the 11th November. I also attended 2 very moving services in Wallingford and Didcot on Remembrance Sunday. Both services were, as ever, poignant. In the wake of Sir David Amess’ murder, there was an increased police presence for me and other MPs around the country, which was a little unsettling, but they were excellent all day. Some quick updates on a few local issues. I know people are concerned about the number of houses that will be agreed by council leaders as part of the Oxfordshire Plan 2050. I made clear when briefed by them that there is no appetite whatsoever for some of the large numbers being talked about given how many houses South and Vale have already had and the lack of infrastructure development alongside these. On the reservoir proposal, I have written supporting GARD’s core arguments that Thames Water have failed to consult the local community properly and failed to demonstrate the need for it. On my Grove Station campaign, we unfortunately weren’t successful in the latest round of funding – only 13/89 bids were – but we’ve received feedback and I will keep going until we are. On the business break-ins in the Faringdon area, I have visited some of the businesses affected and taken up the issue with several people, including our Police and Crime Commissioner, who will visit soon with the head of the relevant crime taskforce. On the shortage of GP appointments and medical services relative to our population, I am meeting Sajid Javid, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, to discuss our needs and hope to hold a debate in parliament on this shortly. If I don’t get to write for this publication before the year ends, have a very good Christmas and a Happy New Year. As ever, you can contact me via david.johnston.mp@ parliament.uk

THAI MASSAGE THERAPIST COMES TO FARINGDON
Hannah Francis
THAI MASSAGE
Hannah travelled to Thailand to study Thai massage.
Hannah Francis (24) has lived in Faringdon for less than six months with her boyfriend Kevin, in their very first home that they have bought together. They are thrilled to be starting their life in Faringdon – a town that they have found has lots of lovely people and is so close to nature. “We can’t wait to be able to make a life for ourselves in this beautiful place and meeting new people as I expand my work in Faringdon,” said Hannah. Hannah is a Thai massage therapist going under the business name of Hannah Elsie and based at the Lotus Retreat on the High Street, Faringdon. She has been doing massage for about eight years now and actually did her training in Thailand. Hannah said: “I love the Thai culture and feel so lucky to be able to bring some of that culture and spirituality to Faringdon.”
This wonderful style of massage has become her most popular treatment. Thai can be 2 forms of massage One being a deep relaxing oil massage which helps relax muscle tension and improve circulation. Or a Thai yoga massage which is more stretch and pressure point based. This also helps relax muscle tension and, helps with a range of movement in the body. In Your Own Home

Originally she started out performing treatments (nails, waxing, eye treatments, facials and massage) at a top end salon/spa in Beaconsfield, and has also worked as a Thai massage therapist in High Wycombe, the town where she grew up. Hannah was thrilled when she found she could bring her work to Faringdon. Called ‘Hannah Elsie’, Hannah’s business has been running for about three years. However, lockdown completely stopped Hannah being able to offer beauty treatments and massage, but she has now returned to work and offers just five massages per day. “This is so I can ensure that each one I do is personalised and that I have the energy and time for every person that comes in to see me,” said Hannah. As a fully qualified beauty therapist specialising in reiki, crystal healing and various massage therapies, Hannah believes that there are so many benefits in massage for physical and mental health. “It helps reduce stress and anxiety,” said Hannah. “I love that I can help people in such a way.” Thai has two forms of massage – one being a deep relaxing oil massage, which helps to relax muscle tension and improve circulation or a Thai yoga massage, which is more stretch and pressure-point based. This also helps relax muscle tension and helps with a range of movement in the body. “All massage is so important for the mind and bringing the body back into balance,” explained Hannah. “Many people suffer some form of stress-related uncomfortable emotion including anxiety. This is what made me take the next step on my journey to start my own business and focus on helping people with my massage therapies.” In the run up to Christmas, Hannah is offering 20% off first bookings and also providing gift vouchers to buy for family or friends to give them a treat for Christmas. Churches Together In Faringdon FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD During my Juvenate in Cebu, Philippines, Brother Charles McCann at this time of the year was very busy stirring up pudding on the last Sunday of Advent. He warned us NEVER TO WASTE FOOD especially with this homemade Victorian recipe. Historian Tony Hadland of Buckland sent me a link from the recent Countryman magazine where folklore writer Dee Dee Chainey enumerated the ingredients as described by Mary Kettilby in her 1714 book:
Crowdy Crowdy & & rose rose soliCitors soliCitors

“Take one pound of Suet, shred very small and sifted, one pound of raisins stoned, four spoonfuls of flower, and four spoonfuls of sugar, five eggs, but three whites; beat eggs with a little salt: tie it up close, and boil it four hours at least.” Last Christmas, Mary Poole of Southmoor did homemade Christmas puddings for me. Yes, it was first time to have tasted such cake since I arrived UK in 1994. The Christmas puddings we buy in supermarkets, are wrapped in commercial plastics, very sugary which are very bad for diabetics and for our weight and health. Summer was generous, we produced all sort of food in our backyard and allotments. Buckets of apples, tomatoes, and courgettes were offered at our Harvest Masses. A friend gave me jam from green tomatoes he grew. Why not make our homemade Christmas delights. During Halloween, we wasted £30 million-worth of Day Glow vegetables. Every Christmas, 2 million turkeys, 5 million Christmas puddings, and 74 million mince pie get disposed of while still edible, causing almost 270,000 tons of food waste in total www.respectfood.com The Faringdon Community Larder helps the residents access to surplus food for less money. What a wonderful way to reduce food waste. The shop opens Tuesdays at 2:30pm at the Corn Exchange. Its revenues go to help young people. Come and join our Cake Sale on Saturday 4 December between10am and 12noon. Come also to our Christmas Quiz, a typical British Pass time on Friday 17th December at 7:30pm. All these events take place at Blessed Hugh Church Hall. Proceeds will help the poor. https://blessedhugh.org. uk/ Mustard Seed Charity Shop has free trade goodies which come from market chain free from child labour and modern slavery.
