Two students, who study at Faringdon Community College, have been celebrating their success in The Cotswold Challenge 2021. in Year 12 at Faringdon Community College won fourth place in the Creative Writing category for her poem entitled ‘Perfect’. Amelia wins a £50 cash prize and a certificate. Author and judge, Amanda Jennings said: “A searing poem dissecting the concept of perfection and the standards society imposes on us. Expertly paced with super rhythm and wonderful use of language.” of Longcot is in Year 11 and won two Commended certificates in the Art & Design category for her pieces: ‘Drowning in Koi’ and ‘Bodiless Beauties’. Judge, Lady Bathurst said: “’Drowning in koi’ is gorgeous. Beautifully done.” Art director and oil artist, Paul Cottrell commented about Bodiless Beauties’: “Mesmerising in concept and strong in draughtsmanship. An excellent piece!”

When your office is your dining room or garden shed, running a business efficiently is not always easy. The house is full of distractions and holding a business meeting at the kitchen table is not really professional. So how can you maintain a professional image while working from home?

Try to have some part of your house devoted solely to work.

When you’re at your desk, it’s time to work. When you’re sitting on the settee, it’s time to relax. It is also a good idea to have a place outside of your house for meetings. There is often office or meeting room space available in the local area to rent by the hour or the day (see article re Faringdon Business Centre above). Alternatively, a quiet table in the local pub or café can provide a neutral environment.

It is important to stick to a work schedule and not give in to the temptation of having a lie-in till noon or popping out to the shops in the afternoon. Being self-disciplined means that customers or clients will know what those hours are and when they can reach you.

Don’t waste too much time on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. They are notoriously time-consuming, so allocate a limited amount of time for each. Be friendly, but professional.

The same applies to incoming phone calls. If you use your mobile for business and personal calls, remember to answer calls from unfamiliar numbers in a professional manner and always make sure you turn off the radio or television before you answer.

If you can create both physical and mental separation between your business and your personal life, your business will be more successful and you’ll have better peace of mind.

Work to renovate this much-loved building, in our town centre, is almost complete. After 3 years of planning and searching for funding, we are very excited to have the Old Town Hall back to tip top condition.

It is great to be able to offer a community cinema once again for the residents of Faringdon.

Our first blockbuster will be Dream Horse on 17th September.

I was born in Faringdon and have lived here pretty much all my life.

I really like it: It's the place I want to be and the place I care about most.

I've been involved with a few things in Faringdon over the years - Folly Tower and Woodland, various health groups, Ferndale choir. I created www.faringdon.org with a friend in 2000 and have been maintaining it since.

I hope now to join with others to make Faringdon an even better place to live. A place that looks well cared for and one that encourages community spirit and engagement.

I am particularly interested in initiatives that help Faringdon become greener, cleaner, livelier, and even more attractive.

Sarah's Beauty Room & Deevers Hair

, who lives in Faringdon, has been running her business, Sarah’s Beauty Room in Stanford-in-the-Vale, for five years. She did her initial beauty therapy training at Reading College 18 years ago and has since amassed a huge folder full of further training certificates in beauty and related fields, including a diploma in equine sports massage.

She said: “I really enjoy the diversity of treatments I offer, everything from a variety of manicure and pedicure options to eyelash extensions and Hollywood waxing! I am also trained in many different massage techniques, Swedish, pressure-point, aromatherapy, sports, drainage and deep tissue.”

Earlier this year, Sarah teamed up with , who lives and works in Stanford. Lisa has been a hairdresser for over 18 years and started her own hair salon, Deevers, in 2008.

Both Sarah and Lisa were looking for bigger premises for their respective businesses so, when the opportunity came up to take on a brand new salon in the heart of Stanford that could be designed to meet both their specifications exactly, it made sense to share the space and work alongside each other.

Originally, Sarah and Lisa had planned to get the new salon ready to open on 1st March 2021, but were further hindered by the pandemic restrictions on the health and beauty industry, and were finally allowed to open on 12th April.

Sarah has been qualified for nearly 20 years in beauty therapy and her main client base comes from the local area, but she has a few clients who still come back despite having moved away to places such as Devon or Wales. She strives to provide high quality professional treatments to all her clients whilst keeping a really friendly and fun atmosphere in the salon that people really look forward to visiting!

Stanford is a rapidly growing village, which means Sarah is getting new clients all the time. Word is definitely spreading about the partnership she has created with Lisa and the beautiful airy salon environment that has been designed by them.

Being tucked away at Stanford Business Court means the salon is very private and quiet and has the benefit of its own dedicated parking spaces directly outside the door.

Sarah says: “I am lucky enough to absolutely love my job.

Running my own business in beautiful new premises is definitely my dream come true and I would love people to come and visit the new salon and share the dream with me.”

As it hasn’t previously been possible to have a grand opening, Sarah and Lisa are now planning a Christmas Open Evening on Saturday 4th December for existing clients and prospective new clients with nibbles, bubbles and goody bags galore.

Whilst some of us enjoy exercise others can be more reluctant to take part. After all, it does take time and effort, it’s not always fun and can be painful – and if you don’t experience any gain or reward, what’s the point?

I absolutely love this time of year, the transition into Autumn from our beautiful mixed Summer months (that in reality made my tomato crop fail due to blossom blight as it was hot - cold - hot - cold).

Last month I was asked by our local church to help out with some flower arrangements and since we live right next door and I love flowers I was very happy to try! I always love picking flowers and making little arrangements, it’s not too difficult and something you can do with flowers from the fields around us (if on footpaths and the plants are not protected) and from your very own garden!

You’ll see from the picture above, Lilly (my cat) was only too happy to help me with this task. At first I started with the idea of using some of my Dahlias, but I decided however it was much better to use some giant daisies that grow in abundance around the cottage. I planted some of these from seed last year and it’s always a joy to see them pop up all over the garden; they also look really pretty in a vase, especially surrounded by the grasses - it felt like the perfect bouquet for the church to compliment the stonework alongside showing a little nod towards Autumn with the tones, colours and arrangement.

Lilly is a huge fan of exploring so any excuse to potter along and look in the church and see what I’m up to, she’ll be there.

She is quite dog-like and really does love to be taken out for a walk and follow me wherever I am. Alongside the flowers I am really happy to announce that over the summer Jon and I got engaged after a few days in Malta for my 30th birthday! Since then I have set up a new account for travel @hercountrytravels so if you’re looking for tips on how to travel safely and what that means moving forwards then feel free to pop on over and follow for tips and ideas.

As we move forwards into the Autumn I’m going to be attending a few craft courses and try my hand at making an Autumn wreath and am also preparing the garden and cottage for the colder and wetter winter months we have coming!

This month’s podcast review is that of Rachel Johnson’s “Difficult Women”, a name inspired by Ken Clarke’s description of Theresa May as “being a bloody difficult woman”. In this podcast, the journalist, presenter, and writer speaks to a variety of influential and successful women in their industry.

She discusses the fact that they have been described as “being a difficult woman” (typically by men) or are they, in fact, just passionate and determined.

The podcast style is very much interview/conversation.

Johnson lets the woman being interviewed the opportunity to answer the question being asked without much interruption.

It is obvious some of the interviewees are friends with Johnson, or they socialise in the same circles. The opening podcast is with Lady Brenda Hale, who in 2004 was the only woman appointed as a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary. Then in 2017, she served as the President of the Supreme Court of the UK. She is now a member of the House of Lords.

There has been criticism of the podcast in that, so far, the women are all middle class with middle-class views. What is wrong with that? It is not a crime to be a middle-class woman with views and opinions. Indeed, in the interview with Sasha Swire, Swire discusses how the wives of some politicians express their political views and are denigrated and an object of fun.

If you listen to the stories, some of the women interviewed had to work hard from poor backgrounds and carve out a career for themselves. The significant takeaway is that education is a great advantage. Whether you went to grammar school or secondary school, and then worked your way through the education system, you must take a risk, fight the ‘Old Boy Network’ and at times fight prejudice and discrimination.

Specially Selected

This month I have been happily trying the specially selected wines from Aldi and Lidl. These are wines where you pay a little more than the average £5 - £6 for a bottle, but the choices in the £7 - £11 region are worth exploring. The downside is the wines are usually only there for a short period, sometimes not to reappear till next year. So these may be ones you have to keep an eye out for, or follow my thought process here and try out the selected ranges. Note, I also rate the Tesco selected ranges highly, but they are usually only cheaper when Tesco runs a buy 6 bottles and get 25% off.

The first wine to catch my eye was the Specially selected Gavi at £6.99. The wine had the classic pale yellow colour, lovely smell of white flowers ( I know it sounds odd, but I think you will get it). The taste is lovely with peaches, melon and those flowery flavours come in too. Gavi wines are regarded as one of the best Italian wines and have their own protected status.

Another Italian wine leapt out, the red wine Valpolicella Ripasso, which is another one I like to buy. It is made in northern Italy and has the unusual production method of re passing and fermenting the wine over the grape skins from the previous fermentation. This imparts a lovely additional sweetness to the wine. You get a lovely deep red colour and a hit of the red fruits in the smell. On tasting, you will find red cherry and berries, plus plum. A hint of sweetness, but countered by the fruit and with light tannin. A good buy at £7.99 and it will go with most meat or vegetarian dishes.

Next up is the Rioja blanco, or white Rioja. We normally only see the red wines in the UK, but I have noticed a number of these white Rioja appearing in the supermarkets. The colour is a deeper yellow than the Gavi, but still not too deep. You will get a hit of citrus and peach when you smell it. The best bit is the flavours of peach, pear and citrus acidity which linger in the mouth. I found this a bit of a revelation and equal to many sauvignon blanc wines and at £6.99 another good buy.

I include the Gigondas wines for you to look out for. I have been lucky and found them on sale in both stores. I suspect they are end of line and will not appear at the low price I found, but well worth keeping an eye out for.

On the champagne front, I have tried the Aldi ones and greatly prefer the Monsigny No. 111 over the earlier champagne they sold which was just called Monsigny. For a special occasion as it is £13.49 usually. You will get a lovely fruity citrus flavour with this champagne. Very refreshing to drink.

Faringdon Bell Ringers You will have heard the bells ringing each Sunday which has been a happy occasion in the tower. Numbers are still down owing to holidays and covid caution but we have welcomed Yolanda and Lisa who we hope will join us.

Of course, all bellringers have a home tower (usually, but not always, a church) but we are all part of a national organisation and ring at many other towers. In the last few weeks Faringdon ringers have helped at Bampton and Hinton Waldrist.

All Saints bells were originally cast by the Aldbourne foundry.

The oldest one was cast by William and Robert Cor in 1708.

Another says God Bless the Queen, presumably Queen Anne.

The Aldbourne foundry passed to the Wells family who cast bells for us in 1779 and 1803. I wonder what state the Berkshire roads were in then.

Sometimes founders cast bells in the churchyard because of transport difficulties.

In 1874 the Whitechapel Bell Foundry which had taken over Aldbourne (and which itself closed in 2017) cast three more bells to make eight. If you’re still with me you’ll notice there is one missing. We guess it came from Aldbourne but it had no inscription at all. The tuning of this mixed bag of bells probably upset Lord Berners in Faringdon House who had to hear them more than most people. In any case he was one of the donors who paid to have all the bells broken up and recast in 1926 by the Loughborough foundry who reproduced the original inscriptions.

Faringdon & District U3A Zoom meeting on Thursday 9th September at 2.30pm The speaker will be Alison Rees who has spent 16 years in Zambia “Living the African Dream”. Alison has worked on reservations and has had the opportunity to follow her wildlife photographic interests and conservation passion.

She has been involved in the Serengeti Cheetah project, learning about individual cheetahs. The talk will include many photos, especially of cheetahs but also information about Alison’s conservation and community work.

David Johnston MP Parish News

Parliament is currently in recess. My last spoken contribution, on the last day, was a speech on housing and planning issues which you can watch on my website or Facebook page. I tried (within a 3-minute limit for us all!) to get across why quite a number of constituents have concerns ahead of us seeing the proposed legislation later in the year. Contrary to the impression given by news articles, the definitive proposals haven’t been published yet, and I am hopeful the concerns that I and others are expressing will be factored into them.

If you listen to some national journalists – of course not esteemed Herald/Oxford Mail ones – recess is some sort of long holiday for MPs. The reality is I am as busy as ever, and I have filled the days with surgery appointments, meetings with constituents and visits to local organisations given that I can do them every day, where usually I have to be in London Monday-Thursday when parliament is sitting.

I’m back at home in Didcot for most of recess and one of the best things about this summer compared to last year is all the events that are taking place across the constituency. I’ve had a great time wellie wanging at the Letcombe Fun Day and attending celebration events like the anniversary for the Driving Miss Daisy service and the garden party of the Didcot Good Neighbour Scheme, which I recently became a volunteer for.

One event was the fundraising football game at Cholsey Recreation Ground in memory of Charlie Allum, who was a player and manager for Wallingford Town FC, but sadly lost his battle against the rare cancer, cholangiocarcinoma, in 2011 – his son Chris is helping to raise money for the charity AMMF, the only charity dedicated to this particular disease.

I’ve spent a few more hours at Harwell’s space cluster, where there are the largest number of space organisations within walking distance of one another anywhere in the world and we’ve welcomed the Vaccines Minister, Nadhim Zahawi.

There’s been table tennis at Richmond Retirement Village and questions from young people on the National Citizens Service; plenty of the constituency’s 85 pubs for lunches and chats, and catch-ups with charities such as Sofea.

Besides this, I’ve written my letter to Alok Sharma, President of COP26, outlining what came out of my pre-COP26 summit in July (again, you can read it on my website/Facebook page and I’ll publish his reply) and continued my Opportunity Gap project with Claire Coutinho – our first report will be on the role of parents.

So recess doesn’t involve much rest. But it’s been great fun so far and its nice to see the local area coming to life again.

Faringdon Peace Group (FPG) turned out on a very wet day in Shellingford to cheer on some 200 riders who were passing through on their ‘Big Ride for Palestine’ from Bristol to London. The local vicar who was passing also stopped and joined in the cheering. The purpose of the ride was to raise awareness of the situation in Palestine and to raise funds for the Middle East Children’s Alliance (MECA) who are creating a recreational park in Gaza where children and families can relax and take part in sporting activities. FPG raised £125 towards the project. The riders really appreciated our efforts and spoke of the ‘incredible atmosphere of solidarity and friendship and outstanding support’ that they experienced throughout their 4 day challenge.

I wonder how you are feeling with the easing of the lock-down restrictions since 16th August?

It has been such a difficult and restrictive time over the last 18 months, with enforced and social isolation which has taken its toll on so many aspects of life as we knew it before the pandemic.

Many of our businesses, families and social support structures have been side-lined, or, in some cases removed. Innovations have helped reduce some of the impacts, as technology helped us keep in communication with family, church and friends…..we can be thankful for the positive aspects of the Internet , science and telephony.

As we enjoy more social freedom once again, it can feel a little strange for us all. For some, fears for their health, and the social anxiety of others, (brought about by the length of time it has taken to get medical appointments and missing social interaction), will take time to overcome. Sadly, in some cases, the damage to health, both physical and emotional , may be permanent, or irreversible.

With all that and looking at the world; with the climate impacts, governments falling and natural disasters occurring along with the pandemic, it would be so easy for us all to lose heart and any hope we have for the future.

The Old Testament story of Job describes how a wealthy but Godly person lost everything he owned including sons and daughters, and suffered with bad health, and yet, despite all of this, remained faithful to God. The story tells of how Job reflected on his situation and talked with God in very human terms, pulling no punches.

Yet when he heard God talking to him from a storm (Job 38) , Job realised it was God who was in control, not himself. The end of the story describes how God doubled Job’s previous wealth and provided him with new children and grandchildren.

As followers of Jesus, Christians of every denomination have their hope set in Him. We are humans too, so experience emotions just like every other human being…..we are not immune to suffering and loss. At times it certainly is not easy to hold onto that hope, but because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, we can say with confidence with the hymn writer of old:“We have an anchor that keeps the soul Steadfast and sure while the billows roll, Fastened to the Rock which cannot move, Grounded firm and deep in the Saviour’s Love” I wish you all peace this Autumn, whatever the future holds.

Eventually, there will be the possibility of holding face-to-face meetings as well as virtual meetings.

It is planned to meet fortnightly to begin with and then eventually, when established, hold regular weekly meetings with three virtual meetings and one face-to-face meeting.

After months of Zoom Meetings, it was an absolute joy to be together again with fellow Rotarians for our first in-person club meeting at Sudbury House Hotel last month when 202021 President Shaena handed the reins to incoming President for Rotary year 2021-22 Clive Clark.

With the relaxing of restrictions, we’re now planning future activities and so looking forward to once again organising events for our local community.

Whilst we have not been as evident in the community as normal, our Facebook followers and others of you will have been aware of our efforts to assist in the community where possible since lockdown. Covid brought new challenges for us all and with our satellite White Horse Rotary Group we were able to support Faringdon & Shrivenham Food Banks and our wonderful RotaKids delivered Amazon Fires to Ferendune to help residents stay in touch with their families. In June last year, great local support helped us bring smiles to a few faces with a very successful Scarecrow Competition which was featured by the BBC and raised some much-needed funds for Helen & Douglas House. Later in the year, three of our members hauled, chopped and sawed a good supply of wood for Root & Branch to see them through the winter.

Sadly, there was to be no Festive Faringdon Lights-On event: nevertheless, we made town centre bright for Christmas. The main tree was erected by the Rotary team and on a misty morning team Rotary wrapped the small Christmas trees with lights and installed them around town. Thanks to generous local support, White Horse Rotary Group was able to hand gift bags to The Place and Faringdon Food Bank for local disadvantaged children for Christmas.

Earlier this year, several Rotarians were on duty at Faringdon vaccination centre, the WHRG held a virtual Balloon Race to raise funds for Thames Valley Air Ambulance and Oxfordshire Mind. For our young ones we held a Young Citizen competition.

Since January 2020, the last time we were able to fully interact with our community, we have had to cancel all major fundraising activities. Well, that’s beginning to change; with Buscot Run and our regular events later this year and into 2022.

If you are keen to help, come and enjoy Rotary with us.

Men and women from 18 upwards are welcome. We meet Wednesday evenings for a variety of fun, fellowship and business. Our Satellite White Horse Rotary Group, meet less formally twice monthly.

MUSIC, MOSAICS & MAGI My friend Janet came to stay in early August. We had a great time, relaxing over a bottle of bubbly, kitchen dancing, me, making home-made chicken pie and getting covered in flour due to a lost flour dredger, (and an attempt at creating a flour snow scene GIF…) eventually eating at nearly 10 p.m. on a Friday evening.

Next day, we headed into Faringdon Town Centre to visit: An at the .

Lovely day! In the square, a guitarist, David Reynolds, was playing the kind of music to rock to; Santana among other pieces. His collection hat was there to raise money for a local Mental Health charity: Root & Branch. David is part of a band called ‘White Ridge’. I hope to catch him again when he next performs.

Have you noticed footprints in the Advertiser Magazine? We took the 55 steps (from the square) to Lushlooking Cakes where I bought a couple of delicious chocolate brownies. We shared these in quarter pieces later in the day, (a scene from Matilda came to mind, where Miss Honey cuts a chocolate in half). There’s something cosy in sharing bite size chocolate treats.

Meanwhile, we stopped at the Faringdon Coffee House for immediate coffee and cake. We managed to get the window seat; people watching, guitar music playing, and a good cup of coffee.

Another eye-catching display was decorative hand-painted glassware by Trishy B, items such as a kingfisher on a bottle, bees, a fish bowl, many shapes and personalised pieces are available on request. Trishy B’s work is on Facebook, or e: tiggerjb59@gmail.com I bought coasters with brightly coloured local town scenes and a view of Faringdon Folly. The artist, Sheila Isabel Irigoyen Zozaya, is, a woman of several talents that include architect and urban designer.

Janet and I both honed in on mosaic artist Jo Webster. I was drawn to a beautiful mirror surrounded with bird of paradise flowers. Janet bought a hand-crafted mosaic of bleak, yet captivating scenery. It was fascinating, gazing at all these fragments (ceramics, china, glass, mirror, tiles, some with tiny bits of writing that I wanted to ‘interpret’), and musing on the work and passion involved in creating an abstract scene, reminiscent (as Jo hinted) of an Icelandic landscape.

My next purchase was a selection of early Christmas cards, (by Peter Wheeler), each of which featured Faringdon town centre scenery; it is the first time I’ve seen camels and the Nativity depicted in a setting other than Bethlehem, in this case, inside the entrance to the Crown Hotel! But then, of course, Jesus and Mary had tried to find room at an inn in the biblical story. This was a nicely painted upgrade.
