WHO’S NEXT?

Business Update

For most of us, as we move into autumn, September brings an upturn in activity following the usual August lull as businesses and customers return from their well-deserved summer breaks. But not Perry Bishop, who bucked the trend by reporting an unexpected increase in the summer trading. We can also welcome another new business opening up in the town; a common theme with a twist. We wish our new (Turkish) barbers every success. South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse District Councils are jointly undertaking a survey to explore the key issues affecting businesses in the area and their potential needs and priorities over the coming years. The results from this survey will feed into a new strategy to enable them to put in place measures to help local businesses to prosper. They would welcome your views on the current and future priorities for your business, what you consider to be the key barriers to growth, and how the councils and their partners could help you to achieve your growth ambitions. The survey takes 10 minutes to complete and the information provided will be used to produce a new business support strategy. Go to https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/SouthandValeBusinessSurv ey to provide your feedback and views by Friday 14th October.

Call Trish: 01367 820060 Cowleaze Farm, Woolstone, Oxon SN7 7QS Email: thedogstudio@live.co.uk Finally, the Faringdon Neighborhood Plan should go to a referendum before Christmas. There will be an update here next month and how it affects you. If you require information in the meantime on the content that is relevant to the business community then please contact the Faringdon Chamber of Commerce.

There was exciting news last month for our local small businesses as the Faringdon Business Group “formalised” and was co-opted onto the Town Team. We look forward to this energetic group, who are very active on social media, to getting actively involved with the rest of the business community and to working with them to draw ideas from their membership. This will include an emerging initiative to draw up a business plan for Faringdon, in conjunction with the district council's Economic Development team. As a result of this we all hope that Faringdon will continue to go from strength to strength.

Faringdon Business Breakfast Club Our September meeting was held in The Bell where we gave all members an opportunity to talk for a little longer about their business and to take questions from the audience. We had a good turnout although one or two members were not able to make it as it coincided with the beginning of the school term. There was a wonderfully broad spectrum of business areas discussed and it was great to see some first time attendees. You only have to turn up to one of our meetings and you are entitled to become a member, join the mailing list and we will keep you up to date with all the FBBC news and invite you to future meetings. There is no subscription, just turn up and pay for your breakfast on the day. So we heard about ‘quirky mortgages’; ‘the (estate) agent who keeps you informed’; ‘balancing your (financial) buckets’; digital tax accounting; increasing brewery sales; the impact of the internet on retail; beautiful business solutions that ‘make you smile’; e cigarettes; Cardiff’s tidal lagoon; how to pass your HGV driving test and of course ‘horse whispering for humans.’ We return to The Bell for our next meeting on Monday 3rd October when we will hear from the highly successful owner of the garage Second-2-None, Bob Hopgood, who will tell us how he has built his business over the past 16 years. We would welcome as many readers as possible to come along.

0 0 0 1 After a fabulous Indian summer, Keats’ ‘Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ has now arrived and we’ve recently had a number of customers who have come in and requested a whisky that will fit with this time of year. For many people, autumn brings thoughts of bonfires and warm, mulled drinks and so we tend to base our recommendations around these type of characteristics and they have gone down very well. One that fits the brief perfectly is the BenRiach 12 year old, which is matured in a combination of Oloroso and PX casks. The fragrant, spicy and slightly smoky nose on this dram draws you in immediately, it’s quite irresistible. The palate gives rich fruit and spices plus some chocolate and is saved from being too sweet by both its relative youth and the freshness of the European oak that the Oloroso sherry casks were made from. All in all, this is a great whisky to sit and ponder on life with as the nights draw in. For me, comfort food is something else that is synonymous with autumn and a whisky that fits the profile is the Arran 14 year old. Maturation in both sherry and bourbon casks gives the whisky wonderful notes of vanilla, spice, caramelised stewed fruit and custard, resulting in a rich, creamy dram that brightens up those darker evenings. On the same theme, Fettercairn Fior has flavours of chocolate and coffee and also adds in peat smoke, nutmeg, mint, and citrus fruits. A lovely rich whisky, where the smoke enhances rather than dominates, this is real ‘comfort’ whisky. I’ve always been fond of the younger Lagavulins and this year there was a new treat available as one of the whiskies that Lagavulin released to celebrate their 200th Anniversary was an 8 year old, the choice being inspired by Alfred Barnard’s visit in the 1880s when he tasted an ‘exceptionally fine’ whisky of that age. Aromas of smouldering peat, citrus and a touch of honey lead into a palate of sweet, warming spices, some fruit and smoke, followed by a dry, minted smokiness. Definitely one to sip on as you stand watching the fireworks on bonfire night. It won’t be to everyone’s taste but if you fancy trying it then don’t wait too long as it’s only available for one year. Finally, Kilchoman’s Bramble Liqueur is pure nectar at this time of year. Made from a high percentage of real brambles (blackberries) macerated with malt whisky, honey and Kilchoman New spirit it’s like nothing you’ll have tasted before. The new make spirit is peated and the smokiness it imparts to the other ingredients really adds something. Very well balanced, it all comes together to sum up autumn perfectly and, even for those who don’t usually like peated whisky, it is very addictive.

There’s something to be said for stepping outside your comfort zone every now and again. This is especially beneficial when it comes to choosing your next read. On a recent two-day trip to glorious Cambridge, I found my way to everyone’s favourite high street bookseller rather like a book-mad homing pigeon. The bookseller in question has a rather lovely dog-friendly policy, so accompanied by Willow the dog, we set about finding our next read. I usually like to be in control of what I read. But on this day.. in wonderful spirits because of the beauty of Cambridge, I placed myself in the hands of one of the delightful assistants. What would she choose for me? Certainly, the young lady enthused, we have just the thing. She led me to a new novel by an author called Idra Novey called Ways to Disappear. ‘This’, she said ‘ has got everyone in the store talking.’ It was an interesting premise certainly. A world-famous author disappears after last being seen under an almond tree with a suitcase and a cigar. It’s left to the author’s American translator to piece together what happened to her. It would have necessarily been something I would have chosen off my own bat, but I decided to take the plunge. There was something so liberating about someone else making the decision for me. The book is from the imprint of famed London bookstores Daunt Books, whose purpose is to discover fresh literary voices alongside reissues of long neglected works. Novey is one of their fresh voices, and is an author who has got the literary world talking, judging by the reviews inside the book. Within two pages, Ways to Disappear grabs your attention, and carries you along at a fair old pace until before you know it you’re half way through the book. Novey’s great talent is in not laboring her point. Her writing is rich, yet succinct, which makes for a refreshing read, a change from long-winded paragraphs that go on for miles. Emma, the translator, is a bit wet leaving the main energy and drive in the story to be focused on the author’s daughter Raquel, who is spiky and takes no nonsense from anyone. Along the way there are intrigues, blackmail, sex and a fair bit of violence. If you like things a little more sedate, this is not the book for you. But if you like your novels fresh and pacy, with significant international flavour this one comes highly recommended. October Ramblings!

Welcome to another collection of thoughts and advice, that are part of our Practice life and also, life in general that we share with yourselves. Although holidays are exciting, they can be hazardous for dogs as going overseas exposes them, to disease and illness they may not necessarily come into contact with, back at home. Some of these diseases can have serious effects on a dog’s health, and may even be fatal. As part of the EU Pet Travel Scheme, owners need to be able to provide an up to date and correct Pet Passport with all appropriate areas completed. We recommend visiting your local vet at least three weeks before travelling to make sure that your pet and its passport are ready for holidays. The BVA has created a handy Pet Travel Checklist to remind owners of what checks their dog needs, and when they should book an appointment with their local vet before the holiday whatever time of year they are travelling: Ÿ Book an appointment with your vet at least three weeks before travel to get started on the right medication at the right time. Repellant/killing products ideally need to be applied one week ahead of travel. ŸCheck that the rabies vaccination and pet passport are up to date. If overdue, there will be a 3 week mandatory waiting period following re-vaccination (but no blood test) ŸEnsure the microchip is working and reading correctly, with the location identified for each time you are asked to scan your dog or cat. Failed readers are usually readers with failing batteries – ask for another reader. ŸSpeak to your vet about preventative treatment needed to protect your dog against ticks, sand flies, heartworm and tapeworm ŸTalk to your vet if going somewhere hot to discuss prevention of heatstroke and how to recognise signs of the problem in your dog. Perhaps be very aware that the risks to your dog may need to be put first and alternative arrangements made at home for him or her. No vaccination or treatment will be perfect; most or all of the time it does the job. Movement of a different kind now, our pets exercise, warm-up and cooling down, has come into my training programme for our Practice canine rehabilitation service. There is much to learn and to discuss but, as space is tight, I give a brief summary of “why” and will move on to “how” next month, if that’s OK with you? Our pets don’t spend all day running around and keeping fit when we’re not home with them or they are quietly at work in my dogs’ case. Sleeping with one eye open, most likely! Both human and canine athletes should never miss a warm-up; it is estimated that the risk of physical injury falls by 25% after taking this first step. As well as making your dog “loosened-up” and physiologically fit in muscle, tendon, ligament and the cardiovascular system, ready to enjoy a long walk or a competition, this injury risk reduction stops down-time inability to walk, run or compete; in many cases there is an average of up to 6 weeks recovery time. There is less financial burden, less pain, distress, frustration and less chance of your dog being unable to enjoy valued shared activity with you, such as a countryside walk, or a jog. I’ve spread the net far and wide and perhaps initiated discussion with the contents of these travels. Enjoy your Autumn, enjoy those apples and blackberries while you can, look out for the very last of the swallows who have shared our Summer and now leaving the UK for Africa - and those first migrants from Scandinavia, Greenland and Russia. See you next month. Thank you. Robert Elliott 21-23 High Street, Stanford In The Vale, SN7 8LH 01367 710595

Tart Tatin!

Autumn is such a comforting season. With the change in the weather and general feel of the air, our needs change too, bringing in jumpers, log fires and warming, satisfying foods. Not only this, we have the chance to forage. Autumn, I think, is the most wonderful time to go out and do this, with the many pockets of countryside to do this, in and around Faringdon. Look out for blackberries. Easy to spot and so truly delicious. The flavour is unlike any cultivated berry bought in a supermarket, so use these perfect little beauties for the usual suspects. Crumbles, pies, and my personal favourite, jam. SautÊ in a little butter with perhaps a few apples, then flambe and serve with a supreme of duck. You could then of course, keep your eyes peeled for sloes. Not really much to do with these except make sloe gin which makes a fabulous Christmas present. Add your gin to a jar 3/4 filled with sloes. If you freeze them first then pour the alcohol over whilst frozen they should burst favourably. Then crab apples are easy to find too and perhaps the odd rogue apple or plum tree. I find that fascinating how one pops up in an extremely odd place! Perhaps an old house has fallen, leaving behind a shadow of what was there? Or could the trees just seed themselves? Well anyway, it's just good to find one. And use it well. Take an apple, peel and remove the core. Place in a pan with a spoonful of sugar and cook for a few minutes. You will soon tell, if its an eater or cooker, that has made its way in to your kitchen. Then you can embark on a myriad of recipes. I love the good old fashioned ones like baked apples, stuffed with as many dried fruits as you can fit in then coated with lashings of golden syrup and baked for 20-25 minutes. Or just lovely Apple compote with berries stirred in, at the last moment served with custard or creme fraiche. I'm going to stick with ease here and make a simple pudding with bags of character and flavour. A wonderful Tart Tatin. Take a 22cm diameter frying pan that has a handle that can go in to the oven. Melt 100g sugar in the pan with 3 tbs water, over a gentle heat. Once dissolved, turn up the heat and cook to a caramel then add in 50g butter. Peel, core and cut in to half around, 8 eating apples. Once the sugar is dissolved sit the apples in to the pan, I like rounded side down and If you have any gaps left, cut another Apple or two to fit in. Tuck them in tightly. Roll a 350g piece of puff pastry the same size as the pan, then lay over the fruit. Just tuck it down the sides of the fruit, then bake at 180°C for 30 minutes. Once cooked, let the tart rest for 5 minutes, then invert on to a charger. Serve with spoonfuls of creme fraiche or some lovely cold vanilla ice cream. The Mile High Club Caught your attention? The subject matter this month is not the ins and outs (excuse the pun) of this infamous club, but about the probable precursor - that being the consumption of wine whilst travelling on an airplane. The question has been asked, ‘Why does wine tastes different on airplanes?’ Wine appears to change in character when consumed in pressurised aircraft cabins at around 6,000-8,000 feet. In fact, it is not the wine that changes, but rather the consumer. There are several influences that are in play at high altitudes that are not present whilst on the ground. Humidity is the main influence on the perceived change as the dryness of cabin air affects nasal passages and makes it more difficult to appreciate the smell and subsequent taste of wine. A well-balanced wine at ground level will remain so at altitude, but the fruit intensity and sweetness tend to be muted, where unripe or harsh tannins dominate alongside exaggerated acidity. Other influences that affect the perception of wine are stress, background noise, vibration, changing time zones and biorhythms. There is a direct correlation with the longer the flight, the greater the effect. The task of the airline wine buyer is to source wine that meets the expectations of the consumer, ensuring the wine tastes as it should at 35,000 feet! It makes one wonder how the selection process is made?

Why are we so obsessed with dieting and not obsessed with eating healthily? So many of the people I have trained have either tried all the popular diets or are on one of the latest diets in vogue at the moment. I know weight loss and dieting can be a complex subject, and there are always exceptions, but it seems that the people I meet that are not on a diet are the ones that do not need to lose any weight. That might seem obvious but in fact it is true to say that they are usually the ones that are eating a healthy mix of quality food and are keen, or able, to be physically active. They have probably either never been on a diet or at least tried to stay away from diet programmes. Most are happy with themselves, their lives, their weight, their shape and most are healthy too. I am of course aware that we can all find something about ourselves that is not perfect and would like to change. Eating a straightforward diet of quality meat, fish, nuts, pulses, fruit and vegetables which are minimally processed generally keeps us well and in good shape. So why are we so fixated on eating processed foods and trying new diets? Is it because we fear missing out on what appears to be great tasting, but which are in reality heavily marketed products, low in nutrition that leave us wanting more? Products that make us dissatisfied, or leave us feeling bloated and unwell afterwards? A few days of eating less or exercising more is one thing but why do we have to buy into a diet programme, or book or DVD? Although some are very good for short term fixes why do we lose the motivation to eat good foods in moderate quantities? Satisfying our short term needs or desires rather than looking at our long term habits seems to be what we get wrong. Whilst writing this article it is obvious to me that long term consumption of processed foods always leads to dieting. We need to focus less on the quick fixes and concentrate more on getting our bodies healthier for the long-term. I have seen those who do just that get the results and feel generally happier and more energised than those stuck in the diet trap. For some of us, the desire to be fit and healthy can be less important than our desire to weigh less. Yes, your weight and BMI are an indication of where you are on a certain scale, but it is not the full picture. Other factors such as general health, body composition, happiness and ability to perform our daily tasks are just as important. Remember, diets come to an end, healthy eating habits stay with you to the end. Is it really that confusing to know what to eat? If you are struggling to understand the labels on packets of food, then maybe try putting them back on the shelf and picking up an item of food that doesn’t need a complicated label to explain what’s in the carton. It doesn’t have to be complicated! Simplify it! Best of luck Rich Richard Marfell – Wellness Coach 07800636004 Richardmarfelluk@gmail.com

Fertility Treatment – Part II Remember a few years ago, when I wrote about the lady in her mid - 40’s who came to see me for fertility treatment? Well, after having her little baby girl in October 2013, she came back earlier this year to try for another baby. Now in her late 40s, she felt she would like to have another go at having acupuncture to help her get pregnant. And lo and behold, she tested positive for pregnancy just after 2 months of treatment, and an early scan showed that she is expecting not one baby, but twins! No need to say how surprised the both of us were … she is now six months pregnant, mother and the little ones are doing just fine. Acupuncture is a gentle way to help balance the energy of the body, regulate hormone function, increase the blood flow to the ovaries and uterus and help to relax your muscles, which can improve the chance of an embryo implanting. It can also tackle the causes of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) – a common cause of infertility. Generally, it helps to relieve stress and make you feel more relaxed. If you would like to know more about fertility treatment, please contact me Monika Becker on 07742 982757 or send an e-mail to groveclinicoxon@gmail.com. H.P. Hypnotherapy As the nights draw in and the clocks go back this month, many Can Help people will begin to suffer from "the winter blues" otherwise Seasonal known as seasonal affective Affective disorder (SAD). Disorder According to the NHS, symptoms of SAD can include: Persistent low mood Loss of pleasure or interest in normal everyday activities Irritability Feelings of despair, guilt and worthlessness Feeling lethargic (lacking in energy) and sleepy during the day Ÿ Sleeping for longer than normal and finding it hard to get up in the morning Ÿ Craving carbohydrates and gaining weight Research indicates, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression, the cause of which is thought to be linked to reduced sunlight exposure during the shorter days. A lack of sunlight appears to stop part of our brain known as the Hypothalamus from working properly. This in turn affects our “body clocks” and the levels of two very important chemicals that are produced by our brains: melatonin and serotonin. Melatonin is produced when it gets dark and makes us sleepy. As the nights draw in, we produce more of this hormone which makes us feel drowsy and encourages us to sleep more. People who suffer with SAD may produce higher than normal levels of melatonin. Sunlight also controls the production of serotonin and, as the days get shorter, we produce less Serotonin which is a neurotransmitter responsible for maintaining a healthy state of mind. Serotonin is what helps us feel motivated, enthusiastic, happy and in control of our life and has a big effect on our mood and behaviour. It also has an effect on our appetite, sleeping pattern, memory and learning ability. Low levels of serotonin are linked to feelings and symptoms of depression, anxiety and anger, as well as being linked to SAD. Hypnotherapy helps stimulate the production of serotonin, whilst helping regulate the activity of the hypothalamus. Jennifer Moss, a fully qualified Solution Focused Hypnotherapist based in Faringdon says: “Most of us have heard the saying “We are what we eat”, but we also need to remember “we become what we believe”. If we constantly have negative thoughts, we are more likely to behave in negative ways and have unfavourable experiences, leading to feelings of anxiety and depression. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help you replace old, unwanted behaviours with new, more beneficial and healthy responses by helping you to re-frame your perspective and views, creating a more positive and relaxed state of mind.” Hypnotherapy is performed using relaxation and visualisation techniques, which helps to lift your mood. This enables you to break the cycle of depression, getting you focused on the positive aspects of your life which in turn leads to an improvement in the symptoms associated with SAD. If you are suffering with Seasonal Affective Disorder and would like to find out more about how Hypnotherapy can help. Call me on 07967 007 546 or email jennifermosshypnotherapy@outlook.co.uk to book your FREE initial consultation. Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ
