Faringdon Business Breakfast Club Despite the holiday season there was a very good turnout for August meeting with the promise of hearing Jonathan Russell talking about past present and future. There were some very welcome new faces from in and around Witney and clearly Jonathan's reputation had gone before him. We started with our traditional ‘60 second’ round where all attendees are invited to talk for approximately one minute about their business or a topic that is of importance to them at the moment. It is always amazing to hear the vast range of businesses that are available in and around Faringdon. From the essential to the exceptional, the products and services that are talked about generate significant interest for all those attending. It’s not every day an accountant explains how the history of horse breeding can help you understand how you can plan your future business. This is exactly what Jonathan from Rees-Russell did to help us understand how we must look very closely at the changes happening around us and how we need to consider how they might impact on our businesses going forwards. We concluded the meeting with announcements of future local events in Witney, Wantage, Highworth, and Fairford and Lechlade Our next meeting will be on 3 September when Mel Humphries from the HR Company will tell us what to think about when you want to expand your business and potentially recruiting your first employee. Despite the
current economic climate, it appears that the majority of business attending FBBC are experiencing good growth. This might be a good reason for coming along and enjoying the success that others are having and applying it to your own business.

He Said She Said by Erin Kelly I’ve never been one for music festivals. I’ve only ever been to one and it was back in 1999. Big Day Out Milton Keynes. Thousands of people in a field, screaming at Metallica. I enjoyed myself as things go, as you tend to do when you’re 18. But I never got the urge to repeat it. My friends group at school was inhabited by seasoned Glastonbury attendees. Kids with what I guess would have once been called ‘Bohemian’ parents. People with names like Astro, Robin, and….Mike. Mike called his parents by their first names and his father would sit in the treehouse smoking joints and being very earnest. They read the Guardian, and they went to Glastonbury. The thought used to make me shudder. I’m too fond of luxury. I’m too spoilt. I don’t drink anymore, and haven’t for over two years. There’s nothing worse than being the sober one in a group of people steadily getting drunk and stoned. And add in mud, the cost of tickets and camping….. The scene of the crime in this month’s book is a festival. Not a music festival, but an eclipse festival. There are such things apparently – crowds of people following the progress of the sun around the globe, gathering in crowds to watch the sky go dark. He Said/She Said is a blistering crime novel, and the latest gripper from Erin Kelly. It’s my first book of hers, and it was a gripper. I love an unreliable narrator. There are two here, and the story plays out from different points of view. Did Laura and Kit witness a real crime, or is there something more sinister at play? The victim infiltrates their lives – is she genuine or a lying stalker? This was one of the unputdownable ones, and the conclusion was well worth the wait. It’s atmospheric and genuinely puts the reader off wondering who to trust. I love those ones..it’s the sign of a persuasive writer that you are reading, fully immersed and doubting what you think you know. What you think you know is probably wrong, and it’s a thrill finding out who’s right. It’s done nothing to improve my appetite for festivals, I can tell you that much. Who’d look after the dog anyway? Claire Meadows claire@clairemeadows.co.uk www.clairemeadows.co.uk

THE SNOOTY MEHMAAN Littleworth A420 Faringdon SN7 8PW 01367 242 260 The Snooty Mehmaan, Mehmaan means guest, just in case you’re wondering and by George the moment you walk through the door, you are treated like a superstar, a true “A lister” guest! The Snooty Mehmaan has a Bar, Lounge & Restaurant, they also provide, takeaway orders too, beautifully packaged and piping hot! I was hoping to be able to make the show on Thursday night, which was an Abba tribute band, sadly I was delayed in London so couldn’t make it back in time. Although I had previously been for a fantastic evening, to see a Michael Bublė tribute, who put on a spectacular show. On these special evenings the Snooty Mehmaan have a wonderful offer which is the Live Tribute Show, accompanied by a four-course buffet meal. A super evening out, entertainment and a quality meal only £30 what value for money? So there we were the following Friday night, welcomed and taken to our table by Riz. Riz has been working at the Snooty Mehmaan since 5th August 2011 and boy does he know his stuff, he can tell you every single thing about anything which is on the menu, which is such a treat and a massive help in deciding what to have, as you will see when you treat yourself to a meal there, the menu is full of choice, every pallet is catered for with Indian Cuisine and Thai Cuisine selection on the menu. We started with Poppadum’s & Chutney’s, crispy and moreish, I really battled to stop myself eating them, the accompanying four chutneys were delicious, my favourite the sweet chilly. Following this we had a sharing platter of malai tikka, smoked lamb tikka, grilled prawns and paneer tikka, served with chutney and salad, I was in the mood for Scallops and Nick was feeling like Squid, so also had the Grilled Scallop and Salt & Pepper Squid! The plating of the dishes is a work of art, stunning, with the flavours totally matching, it’s not very often a person can go out and have prawns cooked so well, soft perfection, what a treat, the scallops were mouth-watering, have a look at the photo, stunning! I must say, that Nick loved the Chicken, he rarely eats it as it’s not his favourite but this was the most tender chicken ever, the cottage cheese fried and presented between peppers was light and refreshing, the Squid turned out to be a star as it came a very close second to the prawns on the platter, the plate was clean! How could the main course compare to this? For main I had the Labadar with lemon Rice and prawns, I asked Riz for his advice as I wanted to try a curry as I’m not very good with major hot, this had the two chilli symbol by it, which is a brilliant idea they have, indicating the hotness of each dish, also if its vegetarian, contains nuts or gluten free. Riz assured me it was not going to be too hot for me, so I went for it, and thank goodness, it wasn’t too hot, it was the best curry I have had in a very long time, I also had the Acari Baigan which is baby Aubergines and Onion Bhajee! Following this, still indulge ourselves with an Eaton Mess, me and my sweet tooth, which was just the right amount and sweetness to follow the massive amount of food we had eaten, a perfect end to a wonderful meal. Asad Ahmed owner of The Snooty Mehmaan, has done an unbelievable job with his Restaurant, he has won so many awards over the years and has just won his last at the English Curry Awards, for the most wanted restaurant of the year 2019! The Snooty Mehmaan is the place to impress, get yourselves down there for a wonderful Indian or Thai meal or Dinner and Dance package! Very highly recommended!

NUTRITION WEIGHT MANAGEMENT AND BEHAVIOUR CHANGE COACH
“People who eat quickly are more likely to weigh more” says psychologist Leslie Heinberg, PhD, MA.
7 Steps to Eating Mindfully 1. Eat slowly – chew each mouthful 15-30 times. Each meal should take at least 30 minutes, giving your brain time to catch up
Tel: 07840 739545
2. Eat without distraction – sit to the table without your mobile phone or other electronic devices 3. Listen to physical hunger cues and eat only until you are full – we have been programmed from childhood to finish our plate
When you eat do you sit at the table with minimal distractions? Do you pay attention to what you are putting in your mouth? Do you take notice of the smell, the texture and the flavours of your food as it hits your taste buds? Do you spend time chewing each mouthful, initiating the process of digestion and giving your stomach the chance to send a vital message to the brain that you are full? If you do all these things, brilliant, well done, but the chances are most of us don't! Mindful eating or eating with awareness is a great tool for weight management and may also reduce food cravings, improve portion control as well as lowering our risk of obesity.
4. Distinguish between true hunger and non-hunger triggers for eating – are you eating because you are hungry or are you thirsty, bored, anxious, stressed? 5. Engage your senses by noticing colours, smells, sounds, textures, and flavours 6. Notice the effects food has on your feelings and figure 7. Appreciate your food These small behaviour changes will help with overall weight management and general health and wellbeing. Go on, give it a go! Theresa

My A- Lift Journey So Far...… I was excited and intrigued when Rebecca from BeautyFantastic by Rj introduced me to the A-Lift Facial by Nouveau Skin Therapy. I had read that this advanced anti-ageing treatment can take FIVE years off your face in 30 minutes. You can FORGET needles, chemical peels, botox and fillers. This non-invasive, non-surgical, pain-free skin health treatment is revolutionising the beauty industry, the results speak for themselves!! The high tech A-Lift Facial uses a combination of microcurrent and unique nanocurrent waves to combat the signs of ageing at a cellular level. It targets frown lines, bunny lines, crow’s feet, laughter lines and expression lines by repairing and reviving all skin and muscle cells. Dark puffy eye bags are reduced due to increased lymphatic drainage and boosted circulation. The skin is deeply hydrated, restoring it’s natural softness and smoothes out uneven texture. Delicate, fragile and damaged skin is strengthened, improving the elasticity and tone. This super collagen boosting unisex skin health treatment is suitable for the face, neck, décolleté and the hands. Rebecca explained to me that a completely tailored treatment is delivered each and every time, with its unique self regulating output system,
evaluating the skin and muscle cells precise requirements, 16 times per second. Wow! Enough science. After discussing my facial requirements and evaluating my skin, I was soon enjoying my first relaxing facial. I couldn’t believe how plump, smooth and hydrated my skin felt after just ONE treatment. I wanted more! I agreed to have a starter course of 10 treatments over 5 weeks and then to move onto a monthly maintenance program. I am thrilled to say the A-Lift treatment delivered beyond the results I expected and in such a short time frame. Roberts Reflections!

Welcome to the glorious month of September. A month of mists and mellow fruitfulness. Reflections on the Summer and the harvest started already back in June and July. We have been watching our apple tree branches quietly subside with the increasing weight of rosy fruit being held on each one. The hawthorn berry crop looks good too, so wind, bees and other insects have achieved much against the odds, earlier in the year. Interestingly a tree in the same field hedgerow that had so much fruit last year, is simply all leaf this year – a “gap year” maybe? As I write, I hope the sales of cool pads for dogs, cats and owners has been astronomical, rather like our weather extremes! They work really well, for our hot friends. I was watching the gathering, screaming, fluid knots of swifts in evenings, before and after the July thunderstorms, then all went quiet about 30 minutes after sunset. Some birds, the younger or “unattached” adults stayed on the wing, where as those adult birds with broods of chicks returned to their nesting place. Back home our two swift boxes have been put up too late for this season’s breeding but will be ready for next year along with more House Martin nests from the RSPB. The House Martin nests will supplement the privilege of a pair of successfully-breeding Martins under the eaves, I have been most discreet in observing the two chicks who are very close to fledging, one of the adults grip tight to the nest cup and sing a most delightful special warbling song. Our UK swifts often fly ahead of thunderstorms, at full speed, which can be at least 70 MPH, as they catch insects caught in the strong updraft. Many times, swifts have returned to discreetly-observed nest boxes completely dry, having flown around such storms, they are amazing birds and in my volunteer list. Swifts are vulnerable to current trends in loss of nesting opportunities and they are on the “amber” UK list as there has been a big fall in breeding pair recordings. Breeding swifts, once they have found and occupied a nest site, will return to this same nest site year after year. Some nest sites in Northern Ireland have been in continuous use for over 100 years! Redeveloped buildings usually seal the nest sites, so being left with no place to breed. New buildings can have nest box bricks built into the walls as they’re built, or external nest boxes. This comes under the concept of urban bio diversity. One of the closest relative to swifts are in fact, hummingbirds. Swifts are not classed as “perching” birds (as are the swallows and martins) if you find any birds crashlanded, please follow the essential advice to be found on www.swift-conservation.org/SwiftFirstAid.htm So to conclude and to round-off Summer for this year, I give you this: BRIEF ENCOUNTER by Peter Brown. Three precious months is all that they could stay May, flaming June and hot July now swifts have left to our dismay. Like anchors, grappling clouds in seas of sky they weighed, to let birds slip away. We had no way to say Goodbye. I’ll tell you more about my charity work next month. Have a great September and keep well. Robert Elliott

Why is my child hitting? Hitting other children is a very common problem between one - three years. Often the hitting occurs because the child is frustrated and is trying to get his/her point across to others. Sometimes the hitting can be because the child can’t express themselves with words, and verbalise their needs, other times, it can be purely because the other child has done something they don’t like and it is a reaction to that! Children are human after all, and if they are pushed they can loose their temper. Children need to learn how to vent their frustration in the right way, and be helped to understand their feelings. Whatever the reason, if your child is hitting, then it needs to be addressed, as other children don’t like to be hit, it can cause a very unpleasant situation with their parents, and ultimately, they need to understand that they cannot continue to do it. So, what should you do if your child hits another child? My advice would be to give your child some ‘thinking time’ to reflect on what they have done, and also give them a chance to calm down, away from their friends. There are two reasons to do this, one, to defuse the situation and two, to make the child realise that that behaviour is going to result in them being by themselves and missing out on fun and playtime with their friends. You can use the ‘Thinking Spot’, either a step, or a cushion that your child sits on when they have done something you don’t like. They will have to sit there for the same amount of minutes as their age (two minutes for a two-year-old for example) and think about what they have done. Once the child has ‘served’ his/her time on the ‘Thinking Spot’ ensure that they apologise to the child they hit, and then they can go back and play. Repeat this consequence each time the hitting occurs, wherever you are, you need to be consistent with this, as otherwise they will not take you seriously. they will soon realise that they don’t want to sit on the ‘Thinking Spot and miss out on all of the fun! Homeopathy Society of Homeopaths
GENTLE EFFECTIVE HOLISTIC THERAPY Daytime & Evening Appointments Clinics in Uffington and Wantage
Heather Abel BA/BSc RSHom Tel: 01367 820709 NEW BEGINNINGS The days are getting shorter and the Autumn term; the beginning of the school year, is about to begin. Teachers, lecturers, parents and carers wait with baited breath to see what lies in store for each unique child, whether they are 3 or 18 years of age, this time of year is certainly ripe with mixed emotions. The season of mists and mellow fruitfulness needs some careful handling when it comes to our own precious offspring. Love it or loathe it, education is one of the most profound rites of passage in our culture and has huge implications for our future success, happiness, self-esteem and general wellbeing. You may have toddlers entering Pre-School, youngsters who consider themselves ‘too cool for school’ or adolescents, bursting with excitement at the prospect of ‘Freshers’ Week’ at their chosen Uni’. All of them face all sorts of challenges ahead. With so much at stake, getting as good an education as possible and surviving the experience, with a good dose of wit and wisdom, is what it’s all about. Working as a Homeopath over the last 15 years, I have seen children of all ages, with a wide range of difficulties to overcome. Being away from home and family, whilst having to socialise, as well as being introduced to an ‘education’ in a new environment can be overwhelming. Children cannot easily communicate how they feel and so can become withdrawn, aggressive or even disruptive. These insecurities may have associated physical effects such as incontinence, constipation, eating disorders and sleep disturbance. All this stress can put extra demand on our body’s resources, making the child more susceptible to every bug that comes along and putting the notion of ‘learning’ to the bottom of the agenda. Older children also have exam pressures, fluctuating hormones, changing bodies, addictions and the FOMO culture exacerbated by social media, highlighting feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, panic attacks and depression that are all too common in our young people. Physical challenges in this group often consist of menstrual problems, skin, respiratory, digestive and sleep disorders. It’s a wonder we can learn anything at all! This Autumn, help your children to turn over a new leaf! No matter what the challenges are, ignoring them is rarely the solution and addressing them now can grow strength and resilience for the future. Homeopathy cares for the ‘whole person’ psychologically and physically, as a unique individual. You know your own child and which areas they need most help with; let’s start from there and let them know and feel that they are listened to, cared for and valued. Then school really could be the happiest days of their life!

WHAT IS EXERCISE? Exercise is an activity requiring physical effort, carried out to sustain or improve health and fitness. WHY DO WE DO IT? ● It can help people lose weight ● It can lower the risk of some diseases ● It can help a person age well ● It can help to maintain mobility ● It can improve body image ● It can help improve self esteem ● It can help with depression There are many reasons to exercise. Some of us love it, some hate it and some find it boring. Some of the many reasons we do it are to improve health and happiness, to enhance our bodies, to lose weight and to socialise with friends. I see exercise ‘as a way to replicate movement’. It is a way to add movement back into our lives which has been reduced through our busy and mostly sedentary jobs. Hiking, cycling, swimming, gym, dance, fitness classes and PERSONAL TRAINING sessions are some of the ways we exercise. As I said last month, anything you do to move more makes a difference. Whatever you do, enjoy it. If you’re having to force yourself to exercise each time then look at changing what you do. Just remember - you should always feel better afterwards! Exercise alone is only part of the story to achieve health and happiness, NUTRITION is key too. Improving what you eat is important if you are looking to improve your health. Getting in all those vitamins and minerals is essential for many of your body functions. It doesn’t have to be difficult – reduce your intake of processed low nutrient foods. Make time to cook from scratch. It really doesn’t take long to cook a meal from basic raw ingredients. ● ● ● ● ●
Boil Steam Roast Fry (not all frying is bad) microwave (if you have to). It can be a quick way to reheat a nutritious meal
A good diet will improve your health and even affect your weight and appearance, which in turn improves self-esteem and confidence - as well as energising you. If you find all the above exhausting then balance it by allowing time for relaxing, de-stressing, and repairing through the quieter forms of exercise such as yoga and Pilates. Both are really effective for improving flexibility, core strength and posture. Add in MASSAGE for relaxation or injury prevention and you have a marvellous cocktail for health and happiness. September Artist of the month Sheila Zozaya Faringdon Information centre is happy to welcome Sheila Isabel Irigoyen Zozaya as September’s artist of the month. Sheila is a Mexican Architect with a master’s in environmental urban design and has been a Lecturer in higher Education, BA in Architecture, and Habitat Design in Mexico. Sheila has combined her professional practice with teaching in Mexico and uses her art in her professional and academic practice. She is currently a research student and an Associate Lecturer in the UK and is at the end of her Mphil/PhD in Urban Design at Oxford Brookes University. The topic of her research is: Defining and restoring the cultural landscape and place-identity of historic cities: the case of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. This research has been recently awarded. She developed her passion for painting at an early age and started taking classes formally with Ofelia Erosa Cámara, when she was 8 years old. The work of talented people in Mexico such as Alberto Urzaiz, Jorge Carlos Zoreda, Miguel Angel Reyes, Fernando Castro, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Luis Barragan, Orozco, Tamayo, Siqueiros and Goeritz have been an inspiration in her work. Sheila does not have a favourite art technique as she chooses it depending on the theme, time and resources. Capturing the essence of what she is painting is paramount. You can find some examples of her work here: http://www.faringdonartsociety.co.uk/sheila-isabel-irigoyenzozaya.html https://www.facebook.com/SheilaIsabelIrigoyenArt/?rc=p Come along to Faringdon Information Centre open Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm and Saturday 9:30am to 1pm to Sheila’s work.

Summer Red Wine
HIGHWORTH TRAVEL INDEPENDENT LUXURY TRAVEL SPECIALIST
This month I thought I would pick a few wines bought from the various local supermarkets over the last few weeks. There are so many to choose from, it is easy to get stuck in a rut, so I have tried some wines I haven’t bought for some time. From Tesco, I thought I would try a Tesco branded Medoc, which is a Bordeaux wine. The Medoc area has some wines that are regarded as the best in the world, with prices to match. Outside those mega prices are many lovely wines, which is why I gave it a try. A mid range price of £8, has a lovely deep red colour and a good sniff found some black cherry type of smell and a good glug gave more black fruits, a noticeable tannin, though not too much. Altogether a nice medium bodied red wine to drink with a meal and good value. I have tried several of the other Tesco tabled wines and have only good results so far. For a complete difference, I tried a Gruner Veltliner a Taste The Difference offering, at £8.25. This is from Austria, which I guess is not the first country you think of as a wine producing region, but they have been at it for centuries. This is a straw coloured white wine, with a nice whiff of peaches and citrus fruit. There are loads of other fruit flavours when you taste it and the flavours linger nicely in your mouth. I enjoyed this with a fish supper, though I think it is good enough to enjoy on it’s own or with nibbles. While in Sainsbury’s, I spotted a Gigondas red wine on offer, reduced to £14. I used to buy this regularly before it became famous and a lot cheaper. So out of nostalgia, I bought it. this is a French wine from the Rhone region. It lived up to my memory of it, starting with a deep red colour, then a good sniff of black and red berries. Once you drink it, this all comes together to deliver a really full mouth feel with just a hint of tannin and it lingers in the mouth after drinking it. If you want to splash out a bit, this is a good choice. Over in Waitrose I found a Slovakian wine on offer - well I did say I was trying outside the regular countries. This is a Sauvignon blanc / pinot grigio blend from Puklavec and Friends at £8.79. I just love the idea of a bunch of mates getting together to make wine. The result is definitely worth their efforts. A light yellow colour and then a punch of citrus fruit to the nose followed by a big dollop of citrus fruit, plus some granny smith apple and a dash of peach for good measure. I would happily just drink this before a meal, with white meat or fish or just on an afternoon sat outdoors over the weekend.

Own or Renting!
“Is the balance between owning and renting your home changing?” Recent surveys show the continuing increase of those renting as a proportion to owning their own property. The main reason behind this is affordability, not just in the cost of buying a house as a proportion to earnings, but also in the charges which are levied through SDLT (Stamp Duty). Whilst the cost of a monthly mortgage has probably never been cheaper (often more so than the rent for an equivalent home) finding the 5% or more deposit on the ever higher house prices and the stamp duty, requires a lot of hard earned cash which many can find hard to find. Central government have struggled to deal with the affordability for many years, always promising to deliver more and more homes in the forlorn hope that more homes means lower prices but in practice this has never happened. So they introduce nil stamp duty to first time buyers and 20% Help to Buy on new homes. The result? Still higher prices and the mainstream house builders posting huge profits. So renting continues to be a low entry cost option for those still saving for their deposit, or simply wanting the flexibility renting a home can give when changing jobs and moving into new areas. It also remains the only option for those who might struggle to secure mortgages due to credit history or lower salaries. So, in accepting the inevitable, the government is trying to improve the supply and control of the rental market. This is happening in two ways. It is encouraging financial institutions to invest in large scale developments which are for lease only, making this an acceptable investment proposition. On the control side, and somewhat perversely, it is simultaneously discouraging the private buy to let landlord by, for example removing tax breaks and adding in a 3% surcharge over and above normal stamp duty levels. (We have our own views on why this is the case but that would fill another article!) Another way government is reacting is in the current review by the government in AST’s – assured shorthold tenancies which are the standard basis of renting. The review is out for consultation until October and largely centres around removing the ability of a landlord to terminate a lease unless under certain prescriptive grounds – much like we have had with commercial tenancies for many years. By doing so they are looking to give tenants greater security, understand that for an increasing number, renting is no longer a short term stop gap until buying. Are we to be worried about this? No; in our view it should be embraced. Any reasonable protection for tenants from having to keep moving home must be a good thing. But instead of penalising those who see buy-to-lets as a sensible alternative pension planning, they should be encouraged. It is after all the way of things to come. Jenny Preece MRICS
