Welcome to the premiere issue of Arts |Culture |Fun magazine. It is a publication that focuses on the uniqueness of San Antonio — its people, history, cultures and the organizations that make it unlike any other city.

In this Fiesta-themed issue, you will find articles about San Antonio’s biggest annual party — told from a different perspective. Included are complete details of all Fiesta® San Antonio events, chronologically ordered (pages 52-96) to help you plan your 11 days of Fiesta fun. You can’t miss the spectacular Parades and their decades-old traditions (pages 42-46). And the fabulous custom gowns befitting the Queens of Fiesta (pages 28-32) are truly works of art — many actually are in a museum.

As a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, San Antonio’s culinary scene is on fire, but our city’s oldest and most Iconic Restaurants (pages 18-22) have stood the test of time. Meet the families that have made them local destinations for generations, like the Cortez Family (page 24) whose passion is preserving their culture and heritage for all of San Antonio.

San Antonio has several extraordinary Small Theatres and venues (pages 8-12) that bring world-class entertainment to intimate settings. Everyone knows San Antonio’s beloved Majestic and Empire Theatres. Now, meet the organization (pages 14-15) behind the restoration of these venues and how they continue to support the Performing Arts in our local schools.

INTIMATE SPACES, BIG IMPACT: Celebrating the Magic of Small Theatres

Enjoying a concert, seeing a play, laughing at your favorite comedian — theatre stages offer something for everyone. But where you see a show can elevate your experience and add another layer of history, drama and entertainment to the show.

Let’s pull back the curtain and put these theatrical gems in a spotlight of their own.

CHARLINE MCCOMBS EMPIRE THEATRE

Comedy, romance, music and drama — the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre has shared it all with San Antonio since it opened its doors in 1914. The 110-year-old theatre was once the largest movie theatre in San Antonio, with decorations that matched the feature of the week and staff in costumes matching the movies. Roy Rogers even once rode his famous horse, Trigger, between the rows of delighted audience members.

Originally built for silent pictures and vaudeville shows, the Empire has outlived those genres, still welcoming crowds and wowing them with its fantastic architecture and design. And it’s no wonder. After closing its doors in 1978, this golden jewel was restored in 1998. The painstaking process revealed 24 different colors of paint, as well as aluminum and gold leafing — once an inexpensive way to add luster.

But all that beauty was lost when nine feet of water washed through the building in San Antonio’s historic 1921 flood. Rather than redoing the original elaborate design, the interior was repainted in thick white paint, masking both the flood damage and the once gilded interior. To bring the Empire back to its glory, $5.5 million was raised by the Las Casas Foundation, who turned its attention to the Empire after restoring its sister theatre, the Majestic. The Empire’s restored décor includes six pounds of 23 carat gold leafing.

While it no longer shows silent movies, the Empire regularly hosts concerts, comedy shows and performances in its intimate, ornate setting. From Jerry Jeff Walker to the Pink Floyd Laser Show, the theatre’s décor and restored stage make every show shine. You might even say attending a show at the Empire is historic. After all, the Empire is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

MAGIK CHILDREN’S THEATRE

Taking you away to another time or place — performing arts can be a bit of magic. Since 1994, Magik Theatre has introduced young minds to the magic of the performing arts, nurturing their imagination, promoting literacy and fostering a lifelong appreciation for theatre.

THE PUBLIC THEATER OF SAN ANTONIO

Nestled in San Antonio’s San Pedro Park, The Public Theater of San Antonio gives a new meaning to the idea of playing in the park. And it’s been doing it since 1912, making it San Antonio’s longest running and most successful live theatre.

Magik is a 500-seat theatre that presents literature-based productions with nearly 200 performances annually, bringing nationally recognized children’s literature to life. A cherished cultural destination for locals and tourists alike, the theatre itself was rebuilt after a fire in 1913 and was a focal point of the 1968 World’s Fair, San Antonio’s beloved HemisFair.

That location adds to the theatre’s charms. Families can make a day of heading to the theatre by enjoying Magik’s neighboring coffee shops, ice cream parlors, top restaurants and Yanaguana Garden with its splash pads and playgrounds in Hemisfair Park.

More than families are drawn to Magik: approximately 35,000 elementary and middle school students participate in field trips to Magik each year. Another 10,500 attend public performances where families and children delight in seeing stories brought to life. Magik has produced more than 250 main stage and touring shows, and played to more than 2.5 million people.

Part of the magic of Magik is the level of its productions and performances. Each show is brought to life by professional actors and theatre technicians, elevating the productions to a level on par with San Antonio’s finest theatres — but at a fraction of the cost. Performances are infused with elements that engage even the youngest theatergoers and adults, and special sensory-friendly performances create a welcoming environment for all individuals to enjoy an authentic theatre experience.

Through its productions, the non-profit The Public works to inspire, educate and connect communities, and its roots run as deep as the trees in San Pedro Park. Founded as the San Antonio Dramatic Club in 1912, the organization was incorporated as the San Antonio Little Theatre in 1927.

Long-time San Antonians may still think of the theatre and the production company as San Pedro Playhouse or The Playhouse San Antonio — and The Public Theater embraces that rich history as it works to share stories and serve the community from its historic home. It also shares its historic home with The Classic Theatre of San Antonio, which produces shows in the Cellar Theater, the smaller of The Public’s two performance spaces.

The collaboration between the two theatre companies means fantastic productions in both of The Public’s spaces and shared staffing, making the best use of resources and keeping local productions available for San Antonio to enjoy. The Cellar seats 60, providing intimate theatrical experiences, while the Russell Hill Rogers stage is home to spectacular musicals, sweeping dramas and rollicking comedies designed to fill the 350-seat theatre.

Seeing a Public Theater production supports San Antonio’s homegrown performing arts community: nearly 90 percent of the 200 professionally paid performers and technicians who annually participate in productions are from the local region, honoring its origination as the San Antonio Dramatic Club.

BRAUNTEX PERFORMING ARTS THEATRE

Another historic theatre offering a fantastic array of concerts and performances is in the heart of downtown New Braunfels. Just a month after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Brauntex Movie Theatre opened its doors with patrons paying 30 cents admission to see Bing Crosby and Mary Martin in “Birth of Blues.”

Brauntex ultimately grew to two screens in its heyday, but like the Empire, as moviegoers’ tastes changed and larger, more modern theatres opened, the Brauntex fell into disrepair and was shuttered in 1998. Yet locals knew it was a gem that deserved to be reborn.

The building was rescued from the wrecking ball by a group of citizens who recognized, not only its historic value, but also the potential for the Brauntex to fill the need for a performing arts theatre in the growing community of New Braunfels. The theatre reopened in 2000 and was awarded a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

That’s no surprise: one of the most visible aspects of the theatre’s rebirth involves its 37-foot-tall Brauntex neon blade sign and marquee lights, a scene that takes you back to the 1940s. Still standing in front of the theatre is its original free-standing ticket booth, one of only

a few still in operation. The lobby has been refurbished, the auditorium floor and original seating were restructured to accommodate seating 600, while the balcony and mezzanine also shine.

The enhancements allow the theatre to be multi-purposed, expanding its capacity to showcase theatre, dance, classical music, chorale, concerts, movies and more. That long-range vision keeps the Brauntex in a prime position to draw the ever-increasing arts industry to New Braunfels — and gives fans of live performances another venue to enjoy.

CARLOS ALVAREZ STUDIO THEATER

A traditional black box theatre that can transform to showcase a performance in the round, with a flat floor or stadium-style seating, the Carlos Alvarez Studio is one of three performance spaces in what was once San Antonio’s historic Municipal Auditorium. While the original structure had only one with a ballroom in the lower level, the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts offers three performance spaces — and simultaneous use of all three spaces.

Featuring the Municipal Auditorium’s original façade, the Tobin is now a performance arts beacon on the River Walk. While an evening on the River Walk Plaza or the state-ofthe-art acoustics of the H-E-B Performance Hall are both experiences to enjoy, the Carlos Alvarez Studio Theater offers smaller, more intimate performances, and is just as stunning as the larger performance hall space. It’s also home to 100A Productions, a new live theatre project.

Offering innovative and diverse performances that foster understanding, community and culture in San Antonio,

100A Productions is a theatrical production company focusing on non-musical, established theatrical productions presented in the Carlos Alvarez Studio. In addition to formal productions, the company is using the studio to share staged readings, giving audiences a different glimpse of a production — and an opportunity for dialogue and community input.

As a process-driven artist and audience-focused production company, 100A fits well with the Tobin Center, which believes the arts should be a shared experience for all. To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the Tobin has launched “Arts for All,” an initiative that offers a limited number of $10 tickets to every performance to help break down economic barriers and open the doors of creativity and inspiration to everyone in San Antonio. Whether it’s the thrill of live music, the grace of dance or the power of drama, “Arts for All” ensures that these experiences are accessible and enriching for all who seek them.

STABLE HALL

The Historic Pearl District has become a must-stop for San Antonio entertainment, drawing people in with food and events. Adding Stable Hall to its mix leaves no doubt that people will continue to gallop to Pearl.

Constructed in the late 19th century to house the brewery’s draft horses, Pearl’s Stable is now Stable Hall, a historic, state-of-the-art venue and a destination for artists and music lovers alike. Stable Hall showcases a diverse array of national, regional and local talent in a one-of-a-kind environment, with every aspect of the venue designed to offer a premium experience to both artists and audiences.

Instead of horses, the 130-year-old building is now a 1,000-person venue with a reclaimed Texas dance hall pine floor, fixed seat mezzanine, hayloft balconies (named for what used to be stored there) and six full-service bars. And it’s hard to imagine the horses prancing with a disco ball overhead, but Stable Hall now features one for everyone taking advantage of that dance hall floor.

The flexibility of the venue means that audiences may watch a show from the dance floor, at high-top cocktail tables or with a view from the hayloft. No matter where you are, the acoustics are terrific and there’s art throughout the building to enjoy — if you can peel your eyes away from the beautiful stage and top-notch performers filling the space.

An anchor of the historic Pearl neighborhood, Stable Hall bridges San Antonio’s rich music history with a wide-range of talent, elevated hospitality and state-of-the-art production. Thanks to its smaller size, it hopes to feature performances designed for a more intimate stage and offer unique opportunities for artists and audiences to enjoy concerts in a different way. •••

TWO HOUSE S –AND A LADDER TO THE STARS:

THE MAJESTIC EMPIRE FOUNDATION

If you’ve enjoyed a show at either the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre or the Majestic Theatre, you have The Majestic Empire Foundation (formerly Las Casas Foundation) to thank for saving you — and everyone else — a seat.

Rather than see the historic, atmospheric theatres bulldozed to make way for parking lots in the late 80s, the non-profit spearheaded the restoration of both historic theatres — raising the funds and overseeing years of work to bring the theatres back to life. This effort gifted San Antonio with two remarkable venues where audiences can relish music, musical theatre, comedy, drama and more. Surrounded by the beauty of these historic atmospheric theatres, patrons can immerse themselves in unforgettable cultural experiences.

The Majestic Empire Foundation’s transformative journey also focuses on arts education and building the future of performing arts. One of the foundation's flagship initiatives is its scholarship program — the single largest performing arts scholarship program in the country. Scholarships are awarded through the Joci Awards Performing Arts Scholarship Competition, to recognize and assist hopeful college-bound high school students who excel in the performing arts.

Named for the late Jocelyn L. “Joci” Straus, founding chairperson of Las Casas Foundation, the competition is open to students attending Texas public and private high schools, and homeschooled students. 2024’s recordbreaking 333 applicants are offered numerous educational opportunities, including workshops, master classes and a preliminary audition process. The applicants audition before an adjudication team of premier performance standard judges. The top 25 performers are chosen, along with two technical theatre students, one theatre journalist, and two students are chosen to go on to study at Texas State University’s prestigious summer program — free of charge. These students then participate in the

Joci Awards, a whirlwind, one-of-akind Broadway-caliber performance. All of these students are guaranteed scholarships to pursue their dreams of higher education, with top awards going to acting, singing, dancing, best lead actor and actress, and one best overall.

Since the 2009 inception of the scholarship program, The Majestic Empire Foundation has awarded over $1.5 million in scholarship funds to deserving student performers. The 2024 competition will award over $120,000 to help 28 students pursue their college dreams.

The Jocis also serve as a regional award program for the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, a national celebration of outstanding student achievement recognizing individual artistry in vocal, dance and acting, known as the “Jimmy Awards” in recognition of the program’s founder, Jimmy Nederlander. The students who win the Joci Awards’ best lead actor in a musical and best lead actress in a musical are awarded the opportunity to participate in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards in New York City, where they may win additional scholarship funds.

ICONIC SAN ANTONIO RESTAURANTS: Leaving a Culinary Legacy

While so many restaurants in San Antonio and across the country are closing as a result of economic hardship, these iconic restaurants have stood the test of time. They’re not just culinary legacies, they are legendary.

LA FONDA ON MAIN

La Fonda on Main is the oldest Mexican restaurant operating in San Antonio. It was opened in 1932 by Virginia Berry and throughout its lifetime, has received many accolades.

In 1997, renowned San Antonio restaurateur, Cappy Lawton, was eating at La Fonda with a friend. The owner, who was the widow of Ms. Berry’s son, approached Cappy and asked him to buy the restaurant from her.

“I told her no,” explained Cappy. “To encourage her to leave, I gave her a very low offer. She was furious; however, she returned a few minutes later and said, ‘OK, I’ll sell it to you.’ In spite of a lot of pushback from friends and family, I agreed to the purchase, primarily because I wanted to save the vintage oak tree on the restaurant patio, and because I love to renew old things.”

So, La Fonda on Main closed for extensive renovations in 1997, reopened in 1998, and began a new chapter. It was the Lawtons’ goal to continue this restaurant’s long Tex-Mex tradition and to introduce more sophisticated cuisines of interior Mexico. Cappy, his wife Suzy, their son Trevor, and daughter Avery, traveled throughout Mexico and love the culture and food of our southern neighbor. Today, La Fonda on Main is one of the most popular restaurants in our city for both locals and tourists. It currently employs a staff of approximately 100, and serves about 700 guests daily — far more than its previous history.

Many on the culinary team are originally from Mexico and are committed to bringing the incredible dishes of their native country to our Alamo City. Victor Maldonado, La Fonda’s executive chef, immigrated to San Antonio from San Luis Potosi at age 17 and began as a dishwasher at Cappy’s Restaurant. Victor has worked with the Lawton family for 30 years and has a deep passion for ensuring that the menu features seasonal dishes, freshly-made using authentic Mexican methods and ingredients. Suzy Melson, La Fonda’s managing partner, along with the entire team, are committed to preserving the almost centuryold legacy of this very special Monte Vista treasure.

After 50 years leading his restaurant business, Cappy passed the torch to his son. As of this year, Trevor, who was raised in the family business and is an excellent chef, now serves as the company’s CEO and oversees the five Lawton family restaurants. In the meantime, Cappy has purchased a downtown warehouse in much need of repair, and is continuing to do what he loves best — breathing new life into old things. He also continues to serve as an advisor to his gifted son and beloved restaurants.

MI TIERRA

Many moons ago, Pedro and Cruz Cortez started Mi Tierra as a little three-table restaurant, essentially a food stall, and have since established what could easily be considered a culinary empire. The impact they have had on San Antonio, and even the world through visitors and tourists, is nothing short of extraordinary.

The fledgling cafe in San Antonio’s Market Square was purchased by the Cortezes in 1941. It’s now the cornerstone of the city’s Historic Market Square and as the company claims, “the heartbeat of Latino culture in the Alamo City.” To this day, it’s still humbly and happily serving up the family recipes that the city has grown to know and love, from breakfast plates like traditional huevos rancheros to Tex-Mex favorites, such as cheese enchiladas, fajitas and menudo.

Mi Tierra must also be lauded for its expansive panadería case filled with over 100 vibrant and scrumptious Mexican pastries, or pan dulces, including everything from pan de huevo to orejas (a cinnamon and sugar pastry), sweet empanadas, yoyo de fresa (strawberry jelly-filled cake), peach tres leches and so much more.

The panadería came to fruition thanks to Pedro’s cousin, Maruca, who came to the United States to learn English and stayed with them for a time. She suggested that they open a bakery adjacent to Mi Tierra to save her the hassle of having to venture to other neighborhood bakeries for her favorite sweet breads.

Mi Tierra, along with several other concepts, is still owned by the Cortez family, with the third and even fourth generations preserving the legacy Pedro and Cruz established long ago.

“I like to believe they would be very proud of what they started and instilled into their family that is being carried forward. That’s never stopped,” shared CEO, Pete Cortez. “This is our daily bread. We come here every day and continue to make the city better, the restaurants better and try to support our team members, over 500 of them. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to do it.”

SCHILO’S

Schilo’s is, in fact, the oldest restaurant still in existence in San Antonio today, keeping the deep SA German heritage alive. It actually originated in Beeville in the early 1900s as a bar before relocating to San Antonio in 1914. Schilo’s added food to the menu in 1917, featuring German family recipes.

“When prohibition hit in 1920, Mr. Schilo developed a recipe for root beer, so Germans could still sit around with

a mug of something,” shared Bill Lyons, one of the partners who now owns the restaurant. “He added egg whites to the recipe, I guess to give it more body, more of a head.” Unfortunately, due to potential egg allergies, the egg white has been removed and substituted with another non-allergic ingredient to still give it that frothy look and feel that customers have come to expect.

Schilo’s has sat in its current location, once a bank, since 1943 and although the Schilo family dynasty has long passed, Bill and his partners, along with a dedicated staff are still doing all they can to preserve the legacy the Schilos created of simple German comfort food like wienerschnitzel, split pea soup and the classic Reuben sandwich. The new guard have also added other popular dishes like the Papa Fritz

breakfast (two eggs, sausage or ham, grits or potatoes, biscuit or toast), to satisfy the masses.

“We serve food that people keep coming back for. It’s very common to see cars pulling up on Commerce and elderly people getting out … kids bringing their parents back to a memory they enjoy, and I think, the nostalgic feel of the building and decor. It’s funky, but people think our root beer and split pea soup are just the best they’ve ever had,” said Bill, proudly.

If you ask Bill about some historical facts about the restaurant, he might tell you, “We have ghosts.” Schilo’s also used to have a staff made up of largely German ladies — these were WWII brides who married GI’s.

As you might have guessed, Bill credits the dedicated staff for Schilo’s perseverance. He recalls two veteran ladies they’ve retired who worked at Schilo’s for 50 years. Moving into the future, he is entrusting his daughter, Elizabeth Lyons Houston, to continue the traditions and preserve the roots.

“She really cares about people, and hopefully, my 2-year-old grandson, he’s the fifth generation, will be a part of it too someday,” said Bill.

M.K. DAVIS

M.K. Davis Restaurant & Bar is still a family-owned-and-operated restaurant. Established by Melvin Kimble Davis and Aurora Davis, the descendants of Michael K. Davis and his sister Melissa K. Davis, Michael K. Davis Jr. and Annette Olivarez continue to manage the restaurant.

It all started in 1956 when the Davises bought a Lone Star Ice House and renamed it M.K. Davis Ice House, after the reigning family initials, of which all of the kids also possessed. Initially, they sold groceries, as well as burgers and beer, but started slowly adding items like fried chicken, a sausage botana platter and other dishes they soon became known for, such as the chicken fried steak and fried fish.

Their big schooners of beer and house-made sangria-based wine coolers, patrons call homemades, also became, and still are, big hits.

What made them successful and a San Antonio staple seem to be the same basic principles of all of these legacy restaurants: good food and good service.

“Everybody loves a classic restaurant,” explained Annette. “They don’t have to think about what they want. Plus, we have a lot of variety, from American to Mexican and seafood, so it satisfies a lot of taste buds, even kids and picky eaters.”

At M.K. Davis, you can even find local specialties like crispy dogs and, of course, their fried chicken (freshly made per order). During the pandemic, they stayed

open and kept the full menu even though it was all to-go. “My uncle wanted to stay open during our usual times for our loyal customers. He said everyone needs comfort food at this time,” remembered Annette. “The legacy of M.K. Davis is that we’ll always be a place to enjoy a good time, eat good food and be carefree.”

For Annette, the restaurant is full of fond memories — of both customers and family members. Every Thanksgiving, the family celebrates by cooking at the restaurant — enough food to feed an army. Afterwards, they hand out plates to the neighbors. And when Hank Williams’ song, "Hey, Good Lookin'," plays on the jukebox, she can’t help but think about her grandparents dancing.

“I love the bustle of the restaurant in the background when that song comes on. Nothing makes me happier because it’s like my grandparents keeping an eye on things,” said Annette, who may someday see one of her daughters step into her restaurant-savvy shoes.

TIP TOP CAFE

The Tip Top Cafe is an old-school diner that has been “serving the best food since 1938.” Although the original owners, Winnie and Pappy DeWese, and family aren’t involved any longer, the granddaughter of the original owners, Linda DeWese, still pops in occasionally for a cup of coffee and sometimes Tip Top’s homemade chicken salad, an original family recipe.

“Everything is homemade here, from our gravies and hamburger patties to our salad dressings. We have a baker here who makes everything from scratch, even the pie crust,” noted General Manager, Angela Castaneda.

Also well known for their pies, like their luscious mile high lemon meringue, various fruit pies and ice box pies like banana cream and chocolate, it’s a must-try after a hearty homestyle meal, which always comes with freshly made yeast rolls or cornbread.

“We want to keep the history alive. My grandma used to bring me here as a kid, so it’s personal to me. And the current owners, Jim Scott and Greg Balitsos, just love the history of the restaurant and so have left it as-is,” added Angela.

As the DeWese family used to like to go fishing and hunting, the restaurant is still decked out with the original decor of mounted fish and deer heads, along with pictures from the 40s through the 70s. An old coin-operated juke box still plays old music, along with some smaller ones in the booths. For four quarters, you can play three songs.

Although Tip Top Cafe, like so many other restaurants, struggled during the pandemic, they managed to survive thanks to a long list of regulars who refused to live without their weekly favorites.

On Tuesday nights, you can still get their popular hand-battered Chicken Fried Steak (and two sides), which is the size of the plate it’s served on, for a discounted price. The restaurant’s been offering this discount since before the new owners and it’s made many a customer happy, that they’re still honoring this tradition as well.

HUNG FONG

In San Antonio, Chinese food is often synonymous with the beloved restaurant, Hung Fong, which has been owned and operated continuously by the Huey family since it opened back in 1939.

Hung Fong has been at 3624 Broadway since its doors first opened 85 years ago, making it one of the oldest restaurants in San Antonio today. Broadway is quieter now than back in its heyday, but the warm glow of Hung Fong’s neon sign still welcomes its guests inside.

Fong opened, it was the first introduction to new flavors and ingredients to many in the city.

If one thing has helped the continued success of Hung Fong, it’s been the ability to adapt and modernize. With the help of specialized equipment, the restaurant still makes delectable scratch-made Chinese food, in large enough quantities to feed its hungry patrons. That includes everything from classics like Lemon Chicken to Egg Drop Soup all the way down to the in-house soy sauce.

One of the most popular dishes is Maury’s original recipe for Lemon Chicken, made with a generous portion of breast meat crisped to perfection and fresh lemon juice in the lemon sauce. During Hung Fong’s humble beginnings, they were serving 10 pounds of Lemon Chicken a day. Now, they sell up to 500 pounds a day.

Hung Fong has seen many changes. The neon flag on the ceiling has only 48 stars, as it was mounted before the statehood of both Alaska and Hawaii. COVID presented different challenges, but Hung Fong remained open and busy during the pandemic, thanks to an already well-established to-go system.

Currently run by the fourth generation of the Huey family, Hung Fong is led by Kenneth Huey, who follows in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His father, Maury Huey, at 75 years old, remains very much a part of the restaurant’s operations. Maury’s grandfather, K.A. Huey, was responsible for founding the restaurant, after immigrating here from southern China in 1916 and traveling the United States from San Francisco to Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington D.C. and Louisiana before finally settling in San Antonio. “He was very young and seemed to like the restaurant business,” said Maury. “In Chicago, he earned the nickname, ‘King of Chicago,’ but found his home in San Antonio.”

Maury explained that historically, you’d seldom find authentic Chinese food in America as the recipes have to be adapted to cater to the local market and are also dependent upon the availability of ingredients. When Hung

They’re the best in town and made fresh every day based on a recipe my great-grandfather created and my dad perfected,” noted Kenneth. While many restaurants take various frozen food shortcuts, woven into the fabric of Hung Fong’s identity is the dedication to preserving the original recipes that patrons have always loved.

According to Maury, their success comes from being a casual, family-style restaurant. “Part of our success has to do with nostalgia. We have families that have been coming here for 30, 40, even 50 years. They grew up eating here,” said Maury. He’s proud to have served so many in San Antonio, including former Mayor Henry Cisneros and his son, John Paul, who would tell Maury that his dad “eats like a horse when he’s at Hung Fong.”

“Those stories really warm my heart,” said Maury reflecting on his many years at Hung Fong. “We hope to keep making more.” •••

CORTEZ FAMILY: PRESERVING CULTURE AND HERITAGE

The impact the Cortez family of Mi Tierra has had on San Antonio is beyond measure. It’s fair to say that this city would not be what it is today if not for the philanthropic efforts of the Cortez family. The code, or mission, to honor God by honoring the vision of the founders, valuing family and preserving their culture, lives on through each subsequent generation.

Their vision isn’t just about creating a life for the family, but also about celebrating and preserving their Mexican roots and culture, which can be experienced not just through the music, food and hospitality at their restaurants, but throughout the community. Simple yet profound expressions like the alters, called ofrendas, they create to honor family and friends is just one example.

“My grandfather [Pedro] was born in Guadalajara in 1918 and came to the states in 1928. Recently, my aunt was going through old boxes and found his immigrant identification card, issued at the age of 10, through the Port of Laredo,” shared Pete Cortez, son of Jorge Cortez and oldest of the third generation. “The mercado [Market Square] reminded him so much of where he came from.”

After the depression of the market in the 70s due to the advent of grocery stores, when the produce companies relocated, Pedro had the vision of renovating Market Square to reflect the market of his childhood in Guadalajara, called San Pedro Tlaquepaque, which still exists today and features the largest indoor market in Latin America.

Significantly, San Antonio’s historic Market Square has grown to become the largest Mexican market in the United States and is also home to Centro De Artes, a Latin-focused museum. The original museum gallery, called The Museo Alameda, was started by Jorge in partnership with the City of San Antonio, and in honor of his father. It was the largest Latino museum in America and the first formal Smithsonian affiliate outside of Washington D.C.

The success of Zona Cultural is also largely attributed to the Cortez family. Zona Cultural is a 44-block historic district on the western edge of downtown and defined as “a crossroads of culture, commerce and community; a destination celebrating the story of San Antonio through music, food, culture and more.”

“Lots of work has gone into this in the last 30 to 40 years and we’re finally seeing it come to fruition. This has been a lifetime achievement, something my grandmother started back in the 40s, and to think it all stems from Mi Tierra and a little three-table restaurant stall. Through that, it’s helped generate all that you’re starting to see on the west end of downtown San Antonio,” said Pete.

Pete is also one of the board members of the Alameda Theatre, carrying the torch of his family’s passion and interest in preserving this extraordinary 1940s theatre, a consequential piece of the city’s history. Much work and more funding are still needed, but renovations are anticipated to be completed by 2026.

The infinite influences of the Cortez family, both small and large but always humbly, can and will always be felt and appreciated by the Alamo City. •••

FIT FOR A QUEEN: Making the Order of the Alamo's Royal Robes

Fiesta® San Antonio is full of fanfare, flash and funky fun. With hundreds of events, from high-falutin’ formal affairs to piñata-busting bashes, there's a party or parade for everyone. Everywhere, one of the most popular pastimes is people-watching, and Fiesta is prime time for fashion fans. Alamo City folks love to dress for the occasion, and Fiesta features more than a hundred different occasions to flaunt your personal style, from sequined glam to charro chic to flip-flops and muffin tops.

But the most dazzling pageantry is on display at the annual Coronation of the Queen of the Order of the Alamo. Part highly choreographed spectacle worthy of Europe's 18th-century courts, part glittering presentation of the daughters of wellconnected families, it's the glitziest show in town. For one night in Fiesta, the Majestic Theatre hosts the lavish spectacle, complete with Queen, Princess, Duchesses, Prime Minister, escorts, pages and attendants and a Lord High Chamberlain, almost all from the families of the Order members.

Almost every year since 1909, the members of the Order of the Alamo, a prominent but very private fraternal group about 1,000 strong, have chosen a Queen to symbolically rule over Fiesta. Their stated mission was to be "… a patriotic group of men who wished to enlarge Fiesta's annual celebration of the heroic struggle for Texas independence … by electing a Queen to reign over San Antonio's Fiesta celebrations every year, and to provide for her Coronation with pomp and ceremony." A century later, there are more Fiesta monarchs around than you can shake a turkey drumstick at: King Antonio, Rey Feo, Miss Fiesta San Antonio, Fiesta Teen Queen, Charro Queen, Queen of Soul, La Reina de la Feria de las Flores and dozens of other minor royals rule in their own rights. Fiesta, after all, is a festival of and for the people — a time when commoners can be kings and queens, and outfits from royal to ridiculous are de rigueur.

But the Order of the Alamo's Coronation remains the most spectacular of all — a memorable marvel of pomp and circumstance, replete with royal rituals and glorious staging. To the members of the Order, in their gold-embroidered purple sashes, it's a hallowed tradition. To the young royals of its fantasy courts, the Coronation is their debut — the culmination of a weeks-long whirl of parties and other social events. But to unconnected onlookers who take in the Coronation at the Majestic, or ooh and aah at the crowned young women trailing their glittering trains on the floats in the Battle of Flowers Parade the following Saturday, it's all about the outfits.

And oh, what outfits! Opulent, glimmering, bedazzled to the hilt, each gown features a train as long as 18 feet (depending on the status of the royal — the Queen's is the longest). Each train tells its own story, custom-designed to express an aspect of the overall theme of the year's royal court. They

are masterpieces of gold thread, sumptuous fabric, beads, sequins, rhinestones and iridescent crystal jewels that sparkle in the light. They are worn only a few times, most publicly at the Coronation and again on floats in the Battle of Flowers Parade a few days later.

The journey from choosing a concept for any year's court can take more than a year, starting with a Mistress of the Robes chosen by the Order — almost always from one of the long-time Order of the Alamo families that have had their time in the Coronation spotlight. Choosing the Court theme is just the beginning. For many years, there was always a Court Designer — an artist who would do multiple sketches for the royal robes, the other costumes and the stage set itself. Recently, the Mistress of the Robes often takes that job on, too. After the Queen and her court are chosen by the Order, the real work of creating the dresses begins.

A handful of dressmakers on the Order of the Alamo's approved list spend months selecting fabric and decoration, making slight design changes, holding meetings with all involved, doing fittings, sewing and embellishing. As with any couture garment, most

work is done by hand. An incredible amount of work goes into these glittering garments.

"The dressmakers all have extensive training and skills in different methods: fitting, construction, beading, embroidery, even metalworking," said Leslie Meyer Ochoa, the Witte Museum's Vice President of Collections.

The designers and their hand-picked teams often make two or three Coronation dresses a year, in addition to other work. Some create elaborate gowns for other pageants, such as Tyler's Rose Festival, Laredo's George Washington celebration, or events around the country. Others, like veteran Coronation designer Veronica Prida, have flourishing design studios.

Like membership in the Order of the Alamo, work on the Coronation dresses is sometimes passed through generations. "It's a tradition in many of these families, and we support a whole cottage industry of dressmakers in San Antonio," Order stalwart Bart Simpson once commented. (Involvement in a Queen's court is also a tradition among many of the city's prosperous old families. As with real-life monarchies, bloodlines count.)

Accessories are another vital part of the work on each royal costume, and beautiful matching jewelry is another key to the look. Chris Crouch, who moved his main MOANS Couture studio from New York to San Antonio, has created memorable pieces for many different Fiesta monarchs. While some Fiesta royals donate or mothball their royal robes post-Fiesta, Crouch said it's more common to hang on to the royal accessories — crowns and necklaces are less bulky to store — and sometimes fun to wear.

Back in 1909, when the first Queen of the Order of the Alamo was crowned, life was simpler. The themes were simpler — roses, lilies and fairies. Girls could choose their colors for the dresses, and families or their regular seamstresses often sewed their own fanciful costumes.

"The designs and the methods of implementing the

designs have changed dramatically over the years," said the Witte's Ochoa. Today the Witte has about 270 Coronation gowns, from the early days to the present. A few years back, the collection grew so large that the museum stopped accepting dresses. But with expansion and new spaces, Ochoa said the plan is to have a few representative gowns from every Order of the Alamo Fiesta court. Other royals, such as Rey Feo or Fiesta Teen Queen, are included in the collection, but by far the largest number are donations from the Order families.

After all, what's a gal to do with a couture gown with a 16foot royal train after her Fiesta reign ends? Ochoa says she's heard of the trains being hung on walls or balconies, draped over pianos and even used as Christmas tree skirts. But many simply end up in storage.

More of the collection will be on display at the Witte in the future. Ochoa says there are plans to have "visible storage" for the gowns in the museum's B. Naylor Morton Research and Collections Center. She designed custom storage boxes for the royal robes — a box for the dress and a box for the accompanying train. The boxes vary, she said, depending on the weight. Some trains tip the scale at 75 pounds or more, and some royals have resorted to furniture slides or ball bearings to move their trains.

PRESERVING THE PAST, ENRICHING THE FUTURE: The Conservation Society of San Antonio

If you have ever admired the historic buildings in downtown San Antonio, walked along the River Walk or visited the famous Mission Trail, you have a very special organization to thank. Celebrating its first 100 years serving the community, the Conservation Society of San Antonio is one of the first community preservation groups to emerge in the United States.

The society began in 1924 with efforts to preserve unique sites such as the iconic Spanish Colonial Missions, and ultimately saved many historic attractions across the city. San Antonio was the largest city in Texas at that time, and its rapid growth was threatening many of the historic aspects of the city.

Led by Emily Edwards and Rena Maverick Green, a group of 13 women first sought to preserve the distinctive old Market House, built in 1859 and one of the city’s few examples of Greek Revival architecture. Although the building was eventually demolished, they vowed to continue encouraging the preservation of historic buildings, objects, places and customs relating to the history of San Antonio and Texas.

The Conservation Society purchased its first historic artifact in 1926, when the ladies paid $50 to purchase a door to the Mission San Jose Granary in order to preserve its brass medallions, which the building’s caretaker had been removing and selling to tourists. Today, the Society owns and maintains 17 historic buildings on seven different properties. The list includes such iconic sites as Mission San Jose, Bombach House, Jose Antonio Navarro House, O’Henry House, Old Ursuline

Academy complex (known today as the Southwest School of Art), Menger Soap Works, Gresser House, Staacke and Stevens Building, Rand Building, Steumke Barn, Albert Maverick Building, the Fairmount Hotel, Aztec Theatre, Huebner-Onion House, Ellis Alley and many others.

Now and then, the Society accepts façade easements as a means of insuring the preservation of historic structures. Easements are obtained when a structure is sold to preserve the façade of the building. This means that the property’s owner cannot alter the exterior without permission. The Society currently holds six façade easements, including the Southwest School of Art and the Texas Theatre.

The Society was one the first preservation groups in the United States to advocate preservation of not just an individual landmark but its entire historic natural environment as well, like Britain’s National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty had been doing since the 1890s. It has played an instrumental role in creating the City’s Office of Historic Preservation and Brackenridge Park Conservancy, spurring historic farm and ranch surveys, and numerous historic neighborhood designations in San Antonio. At the national level, they work alongside Preservation Action, an American 501(c)4 non-profit historic preservation advocacy organization.

The Society was integral in the Missions’ nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, starting the process in 2006 and supporting the nomination until the Missions were awarded the status in 2015. The Society’s support of the

Missions includes a substantial donation to the operation of Mission San Juan Spanish Colonial Farm.

“The beautified San Antonio River Walk, along with the rich, preserved cultural heritage of this region, continue to attract visitors worldwide,” said Kathy Krnavek, President of The Conservation Society of San Antonio. “From 13 founding women to a membership of over 1,700 men and women, our volunteers are still actively involved in the preservation of history, structures, customs, green spaces and the diverse cultural heritage of San Antonio and Texas.”

This important work is not without its challenges. Just like back in 1924, the Society struggles to manage the rapid

growth of the city to ensure its historic character is not lost. And new membership is difficult to attain for all charitable groups after COVID.

“There is a perception that the Society has saved everything that has made the city unique,” said Krnavek. “But conservation and preservation are ongoing. It’s not just the buildings, it’s the stories unique to each that are important, such as the Woolworth Building lunch counter event marking its role in civil rights history. Advocacy, education, our grants and scholarship programs are ongoing. Our organization strives to maintain an active role in crafting meaningful policy at the local, state and federal levels to ensure that the history of Texas and of our region remains intact going forward. It’s a constant and continual process that requires cultivating individuals with a likeminded passion to continue the society’s purpose.”

nio’s early days, and in 1948 the one-street, one-night festival was called “A Night In Old San Antonio” for the first time. By 1958 it had expanded to four nights, and in 1966 the name was registered and trademarked, reserving it exclusively for The Conservation Society.

The Society’s annual fundraising event, A Night In Old San Antonio® — held during Fiesta® San Antonio in April since 1947 — is the largest celebration for preservation and fundraiser in the United States, and the Society’s most important source of revenue. NIOSA®, as it is known locally, is a four-night festival in downtown San Antonio that celebrates the city’s diverse cultural legacy and lives up to its motto as a “Celebration for Preservation” attended by more than 85,000 revelers annually.

It began in 1936 as a harvest festival on the grounds of Mission San Jose. In 1938 it was called the “Indian Festival,” a one-night street fair patterned after the fiestas of San Anto-

Using NIOSA funds, the Society has a century long history of saving La Villita from the wrecking ball and encroaching commercialism that remains until today,” said Lisa Pierce, 2024 NIOSA Chairman and Fourth Vice President of The Conservation Society of San Antonio. “In 1942, the Society’s La Villita River Carnival (NIOSA’s predecessor) provided nearly all its profits for the down payment to buy a building on Villita Street, since the city wouldn’t buy it to save it. NIOSA’s legacy of preserving La Villita continues through today — it has donated more than $1.6 million in renovations and improvements to La Villita since 2000.”

Year after year NIOSA celebrates the city’s diverse cultural legacy through more than 155 food and drink booths and entertainment stages with continuous live musical acts in 14 areas — Arneson Theatre, Chinatown, Clown Alley, French Quarter, Froggy Bottom, Frontier Town, Haymarket, Irish Flat, Main Street USA, Mexican Market, Mission Trail, Sauerkraut Bend, South of the Border and Villa España.

Food is key to NIOSA celebrations and revenue generation. On average, NIOSA revelers annually consume over 17,000 lbs.

of beef; 11,000 lbs. of chicken; 5,000 lbs. of sausage; 3,000 turkey legs; 25,000 buns, rolls and bolillos; 30,000 tortillas; 2,000 lbs. of masa; 6,000 tamales; 15,000 lbs. of fruits and vegetables; and 1,000 lbs. of guacamole.

Remarkably, all booths are run by Conservation Society volunteers, many of whom are the second or third generation of a family. NIOSA would simply not exist without the hard work of thousands of dedicated volunteers.

All of NIOSA advance planning, staging and booths are run by an army of 10,000 volunteers — with many arriving every year from all over the country to volunteer — from the NIOSA chairman and Vice Chairs and Treasurer to the booth chairmen and booth workers. No restaurants produce or sell food at NIOSA.

“I'm often asked why I'm dedicating a year of my life to chairing NIOSA as a volunteer, which is way beyond a fulltime position,” said Pierce. “The short answer: like most of the longtime NIOSA volunteers, I love The Conservation Society of San Antonio and how it makes our city truly unique. However, what really gets under my skin — in a good way — is the reunion every year of all the NIOSA volunteers; we are one huge family! It's like we never have been away from each other, so we pick up where we left off the previous year.”

NIOSA and the Society also produce and host NIOSITAs (private mini-NIOSAs) in La Villita’s historic plazas for conventions, meetings and any group that loves a fiesta to raise additional funds. The Conservation Society was the first organization in San Antonio to produce these outdoor festivals for private groups, establishing NIOSA as the premiere caterer of fiestas.

“My main goals for 2024 NIOSA are to make it so incred-

ible for both our guests and our volunteers that they stay all night, every night, and choose NIOSA over the plethora of other Fiesta activities,” said Pierce. “Just as important is to elevate how NIOSA supports The Conservation Society and every person who lives in San Antonio. The whole city benefits from NIOSA, even if they don’t attend. NIOSA invests well over $1 million in our community by using local suppliers and paper goods, and usually pays nearly $1 million annually to lease La Villita from the City of San Antonio; pay for SAPD security; obtain health, fire and electrical permits, and to donate to the La Villita restorations fund.”

The organization is in the process of moving from its headquarters of 50 years to a new location also in the King William Historic District. “The current headquarters is under contract, and Steve’s Homestead, which was owned by the Society for 70 years, was sold two years ago,” said Krnavek.

The 76th presentation of NIOSA will be held April 23 - 26, 2024. Advance discount entrance tickets for $20 are available now through April 26 on the NIOSA website. “But the best way to get discount tickets in advance is to join The Conservation Society of San Antonio,” said Pierce. “Discounted member tickets are $15 per person, and you have the added benefit and satisfaction of supporting San Antonio’s historic preservation and protection of its natural resources.” •••

EMILY EDWARDS: ARTIST AND CONSERVATIONIST

The Conservation Society of San Antonio would not exist without the leadership and unwavering efforts of Emily Edwards, an artist, art historian and teacher whose love for the history of her hometown led to the creation of this important organization.

Born in San Antonio on October 7, 1888, she started drawing sketches at 10 years of age while at the Ursuline Academy, where she was boarded after her mother passed away. She began formal art studies at the San Antonio Female Institute with sculptor Pompeo Coppini in 1902, before moving to Chicago in 1905 to continue her education at the Art Institute of Chicago.

By her second year at the prestigious school, she began teaching at the Institute to help pay for her tuition, and soon she started teaching at Hull House as a volunteer. She would go on to teach at various schools for girls and at the Francis Parker School, where she taught until 1917 when she returned to San Antonio. Back at home, she continued her teaching career at Brackenridge High School, and in 1920 she taught at a mountain mission in Charles Town, West Virginia. Later, she expanded her creative skills by working as a stage designer in New York City and performing as a puppeteer in Massachusetts, which later would prove crucial for her role in conservation.

She returned to San Antonio in the early 1920s, and in 1924 joined forces with Rena Maverick Green to assemble a group of prominent San Antonians to prevent the paving over of a section of the San Antonio River. Edwards used her artistic skills to put on a puppet show for city commissioners — an interpretation of the fable "The Goose and the Golden Eggs," in which the

goose represented the river, and the eggs represented aspects of city culture that benefited from the river. Her persuasive display won the commissioners over, and that section of the river is now known as the San Antonio River Walk.

This important victory led to the formalization of the Conservation Society, for which she served as its first president from 1924 to 1926. Leaving the Society in capable hands, she continued her artistic pursuit, spending the next decade traveling frequently to Mexico to study with famed muralist Diego Rivera, which whom she forged a lasting friendship. From the 1950s onward, Edwards spent the rest of her life in San Antonio, where she died on February 16, 1980.

Emily Edwards is one of the most important figures to credit for the preservation of San Antonio’s invaluable history, architecture and cultural diversity, paving the way for generations to come. •••

A Celebration of History & Culture

¡Viva Fiesta! Every year, the city of San Antonio comes together, flooding the streets, for the Fiesta celebration. The occasion is marked by adorning flower crowns, cracking cascarones and, of course, waiting in line for a chicken-on-a-stick. The festivities are fun, but how they came about offers a unique glimpse into the city's history, culture and community. Let’s take a trip back in time (all the way back to 1891, in fact) as we wait for the parade floats to round the corner.

THE TEXAS CAVALIERS RIVER PARADE

Rolling Monday, April 22

The Texas Cavaliers River Parade is making its way down the river for the 78th time this year. This kickoff parade of Fiesta happens each year on the first Monday of the festivities. Over 250,000 spectators line the banks of the River Walk, crowd on bridges, and tune into the city’s live broadcast to get a glimpse of more than 45 lively floats that make their way down the river, bringing music, confetti and fun along the way. But who are these dashing Cavaliers in blue jackets, and how did the parade come to be?

The Texas Cavaliers were formed in 1926 by John B. Carrington, over 15 years before they’d roll their first parade. The original 19 members came together as a social group to promote equestrian tradition at a time when automobiles started taking over the roads. Over time, the emphasis on the horsemanship mission waned as downtown inevitably filled with cars. However, the Mounted Platoon was reestablished in 1984 and today includes over 100 members who guard the Cavalier monarch, King Antonio, as he rides in The Battle of Flowers parade. (More on that later.)

Now, about this king. King Antonio leads the Cavaliers. The royal honor has been bestowed since 1927 when Sterling Clinton Burke was elected to attend the first King’s Ball and preside over city-wide Fiesta events. There has been a king every subsequent year except during World War II. King Antonio's

modern duties include distributing charitable funds, recognizing military troops, and presiding over 10 days of Fiesta fun!

Today, the 500 Cavaliers are made up of local business and community leaders dedicated to promoting and preserving the bravery and independence of the Battle of the Alamo heroes. The organization grew from its social club roots, adopting a charity mission to do good in the community. The Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundation was formed in 1989 and has since donated over $8 million to Texas charities focusing on local youth.

The Cavalier’s first parade rolled in 1941, coinciding with the completed River Walk revival project designed by architect Robert H.H. Hugman and carried out by President Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration. The design overhaul created the River Walk we know and love today, including its winding sidewalks and the Arneson River Theatre, where the parade celebrates its finale.

The first parade featured river barges decorated with flowers and bright colors representing local schools, businesses, civic organizations and the army. The idea of these floweradorned floats was born from a group of Cavaliers who took a trip to Mexico City and were captivated by the floating gardens, which featured dozens of small barges clad in flowers. Through the years, the Texas Cavaliers River Parade has only gotten larger and more colorful, making it a Fiesta staple and cornerstone of San Antonio culture.

THE BATTLE OF FLOWERS® PARADE

Rolling Friday, April 26

The Battle of Flowers Parade is rolling its 133rd parade this year. That’s over a century of locals yelling, “Show us your shoes!” and lining the streets of downtown to catch a glimpse of the balloons, flowery floats, and bedazzled cowboy boots and chanclas under royal dress trains. With 10,000 participants and 500,000 spectators, The Battle of Flowers Parade is one of the most popular Fiesta events. What you may not know is that it was also the first. Without it, there wouldn’t even be a Fiesta!

It all began on April 24, 1891, when congressman James L. Slayden’s wife, Ellen Maury Slayden, sought to honor the Alamo's heroes and commemorate the victory at San Jacinto, where Texas gained its independence from Mexico.

From there, the celebration only continued to grow. In 1901, the San Antonio Express-News reported that The Battle of Flowers Parade was the first in the nation to include horseless vehicles. By 1914, the group became official, adopting a constitution. The State of Texas then awarded the 400 inaugural members a 50-year charter. Just one year later, the parade grew so large that fresh flowers were no longer practical decor, and floats had to be assembled weeks or months in advance. By 1933, the group obtained exclusive rights to build grandstands on Alamo Plaza for droves of spectators to watch in luxury. The Fiesta® San Antonio Commission Inc. was chartered in 1959 to coordinate the annual Fiesta Week Celebration, creating the Fiesta we know and love today.

The Battle of Flowers Parade evolved into one of the oldest

Here’s a little history lesson and backstory. On the dawn of March 6, 1836, General Antonio de Santa Anna of Mexico stormed the Alamo, overtaking the fort and killing over 180 Texas defenders, including legends like Davy Crockett. Seven weeks later, Texans avenged the heroes of the Alamo, defeating the Mexican army at San Jacinto and winning Texas independence.

The very first Battle of Flowers Parade was delayed four days due to unexpected rain. Luckily, the Texas spirit persisted, and these women couldn’t be stopped. Taking inspiration from the flower parades of Spain, Ellen led a group of women who would become the founding members of The Battle of Flowers Association in decorating horse-drawn wagons with fresh-cut flowers. It was said that the women threw flower blossoms at each other in front of the Alamo, re-enacting the famous battle.

So, why do the crowds scream, “Show us your shoes?” It couldn’t just be from curiosity, right? Well, in some ways, it is! In the original Battle of Flowers courts, float royalty would dress up in elaborate gowns and high heels. But as the parade got longer, the women participating wanted to be more comfortable. So, they’d wear cowboy boots, sneakers and even slippers under their long flowing dresses. Once the tradition started, participants would step up their game every year, adorning more elaborate and festive footwear the crowds just had to catch a glimpse of!

THE FIESTA FLAMBEAU PARADE

Rolling Saturday, April 27

Established in 1948, the Fiesta Flambeau Parade is the youngest of the three. However, it may just shine the brightest. After all, the Fiesta Flambeau Parade Association has had 76 years of practice lighting the streets with its illuminated floats. The largest night parade in the country, Fiesta Flambeau runs a 2.6-mile route through the city lined by an audience of over 750,000, plus another 1.5 million watching at home on their television sets. The night parade is one of the most anticipated events of Fiesta. It has even been named one of the “Best in the World” by the International Festivals and Events Association. But whose idea was it to run a parade at night and devise a fun way for spectators to see the action?

The idea of a torchlit night parade was born by San Antonio resident and civil engineer Reynolds Andricks. In 1948, interest in Fiesta fell flat. It had been over 50 years since Ellen Maury Slayden’s Battle of Flowers Parade first rolled, and the years of WWII had cast a shadow over the festivities. People needed something new to reignite the Fiesta spirit, and Andricks had just the thing — a night parade. While other Fiesta activities took place during the day, a night parade guided by torches would bring much-needed revelry to the Fiesta evenings.

Despite not knowing anything about how to throw a parade, he was elected to the Board of the Fiesta San Jacinto Association to put his idea into action. However, he did have the inspiration of another famous parade city to fall back on — New Orleans. Andricks had attended Mardi Gras many times and was inspired by the night parades that rolled through the French Quarter and Garden District. Paraders carried “flambeaus,” French for torches, casting a magical,

starry glow on the floats, bands and horses. Of course, he wanted to do it bigger with a Texas spin.

So, he called in the local expert, a Fredericksburg man by the name of William Petmecky. Petmecky earned the reputation of “FestivalImpresario,” creating numerous Hill Country festivals, including the Easter Fires Pageant. He had the experience and understood the vision. Together, the duo would pull off what would become the largest illuminated night parade in America. While the first parade was made up of torchbearers, equestrians and carriages, today’s lineup includes more than 200 entries. The streets now light up with LED floats, local bands and decked-out cars thanks to the 65 association members and 300 annual volunteers who make it all possible. Of course, the classic flambeaus still guide the way!

However, there is a newer member of the Flambeau crew who has taken charge of leading the pack and spreading Fiesta cheer year-round. Meet Torchy, the Fiesta Flambeau mascot who joined the team in 2006. Torchy has played a big role in shedding light on the community and also helping kids in need. In 2015, the association established a charitable component, and Torchy represents it well. He visits local hospitals and schools, spreading the message of literacy and education to empower the future generation of Fiesta goers. •••

SPOTLIGHT ON URBAN-15: CARNAVAL DE SAN ANTO

Carnaval de San Anto is URBAN-15’s communitybased, multi-generational, award-winning rhythm and dance ensemble that has transformed how San Antonio celebrates since 1987. Once a prominent fixture in the Fiesta Flambeau Parade, the group has toured throughout the U.S. and Mexico, performed at Spurs games and other San Antonio events, and even danced and drummed in inaugural parades of Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama.

Known for their Brazilian-Caribbean rooted music, flamboyant costuming and experimental nature, every Carnaval de San Anto performance is festive and sure to get you dancing on your feet. Following the URBAN-15 mission, Carnaval de San Anto has revolutionized community access to music and dance, becoming a cultural ambassador to the city of San Antonio. This ambassadorship goes beyond their cultural performances. In their “Cultivation Program” workshops, the group goes into local organizations and schools to teach the art of music and the uniting community force behind the art. Music and dance is a community event that everyone can join in on!

Parent organization URBAN-15 began back in 1974 with a performance at the University of Texas at Austin’s Baseball Stadium. Three instrumental quintets stationed at every base made for a unique performance that was unlike anything attendees had seen before. That one-off performance took root, growing into an ensemble of 15 members with the mission to experiment with sound and dance, and share the passion for art with the community. They’ve been creating ever since, getting bolder and more experimental in their art.

After 41 consecutive Fiesta Flambeau Parade performances, the ensemble now is concentrating on more highly staged work utilizing illuminated costumes, video projections and lasers. URBAN-15's legacy as a parade innovator is that 11 dance/drum ensembles spawned off into the community's aesthetic tradition. In addition to Carnaval de San Anto and the URBAN-15 Performance Ensemble, the organization hosts the annual HOLIDAY LASER SHOW, Mega Corazon Poetry Festival and the Josiah Media Festival. •••

Did you know there are nearly 100 diverse, San Antonioarea non-profit organizations coordinating more than 100 Official Fiesta® events representing ALL parts of San Antonio? And, did you know there is one non-profit organization, the Fiesta® San Antonio Commission, Inc. (Commission), that approves Official Fiesta® member events through an annual accreditation and compliance process, and provides financial, promotional and logistical support to those organizations so that Fiesta® can occur each year?

The Commission, managed by a nine-person, volunteer Executive Committee, Board of Directors and small staff, provides year-round Membership benefits and events, and plans and promotes Fiesta® San Antonio in presenting an annual

celebration of the diverse heritage, culture and spirit of San Antonio for its residents and visitors.

Fiesta® San Antonio began in 1891 with the Battle of Flowers® Parade — a one-parade event to honor the memory of the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. Many events and activities were added over the years to support and celebrate the Spring Carnival Season in San Antonio. In 1959, because of the number of events and activities being added, and those events’ dissatisfaction with the previous coordinating group, Fiesta San Jacinto Association, the Commission was established by the Chamber of Commerce to manage and promote these events.

Today, the Commission has an agreement with the City of San Antonio through an official ordinance. “The City of San Antonio grants a license to the Commission to coordinate, oversee and provide financial support for the annual celebration of Fiesta®. The City Council recognizes the importance of Fiesta® as an integral part of the tradition and culture of this City and as an effective means of drawing attention to the historical, cultural and recreational attractions of this City, thereby enhancing the growth of tourism and convention activities in the City; and consequently, desires to support the continuation and growth of Fiesta® San Antonio.”

With more than 2.5 million people annually attending Official Fiesta® events, Fiesta® generates an economic impact of more than $340 million for the city, and the funds raised by

Official Fiesta® events provide services to San Antonio citizens throughout the year. Through funds, primarily raised from Membership Dues, Sponsorships, Merchandise / Medal Sales, the Opening Ceremony Event (Fiesta® Fiesta) and the Fiesta® Carnival, the Commission also provides direct funds, each year, to its Member Organizations through grants and allocations to support their insurance coverage, capital improvements and general operations. Additionally, the Commission approves and coordinates the street chair sales for the Battle of Flowers® and Fiesta Flambeau® Parades, which provide fundraising opportunities for the Commission and more than 70 additional San Antonio-area non-profit organizations.

One of the most recognizable aspects of Fiesta® is the celebration of Official Fiesta® Royalty. The Commission approves and recognizes the Official Fiesta® Royalty members and provides funding to help each Official Royalty organization with their activities and mission. Specifically, the Commission provides scholarship funds to Miss Fiesta® and the Miss Fiesta® finalists.

• The art pieces displayed at Lutheran Coronation are handcrafted by the participants and their families.

• The artists who design the gowns are volunteers.

• Each court has both legacy and first-generation participants who all have the same chance of being elected Queen or Princess for the following year.

• The Lutheran Coronation started in the 1950s as an event only for Lutheran young women, but has grown to be an opportunity for young women and men of many different Christian backgrounds.

• Most participants who create art for the Lutheran Coronation have never made anything like this art before… the handicraft is taught by Lutheran Coronation Board members.

• Lutheran Coronation Queen and Princess were elected by their 2023 peers and have created a new gown for 2024 Court theme.

• All the beadwork is completed by hand by the participants, their parents, grandparents and community of friends.

• The gowns look costly, but are affordable for many families because the building of the artwork is done by the family instead of professional artists.

• The artwork is displayed at over a dozen San Antonio and community parades in South Texas throughout the year, so it is viewed by hundreds of thousands of people.

• Lutheran Coronation builds relationships, celebrates faith and creates art for the San Antonio community.

• The Pilgrimage to the Alamo began in 1918 as a replacement for the Battle of Flowers Parade which did not occur that year due to the United States’ involvement in World War I. In place of the military, which was not available to participate in the Battle of Flowers Parade, Boy Scouts led the procession to the Alamo.

• The Pilgrimage to the Alamo is a solemn and silent procession for 6 blocks from the Vietnam War Memorial to the Alamo, in which all participants in The Pilgrimage walk as members of the groups represented, carrying floral tributes to be placed on the Alamo green, before taking a set in Alamo Plaza.

• The program in Alamo Plaza honors those who died defending the Alamo on March 6, 1836, which made it possible for Texans to be victorious at San Jacinto and win for Texas its independence as a Republic which endured nearly 10 years.

• Participants in The Pilgrimage to the Alamo represent approximately 75 different organizations, or groups in the San Antonio area, and include the San Antonio Command of the six branches of the US Military, the San Antonio Mayor and members of City Council, the Bexar County Judge and members of the Commissioners Court, the Bexar County Clerk, the Bexar Historical Commission, the Texas General Land Office, the Alamo Trust, the Alamo Mission Chapter DRT, and other chapters of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, members of the Sons of the Republic of Texas, the San Antonio FIESTA Commission, King Antonio and the Texas Cavaliers, Rey Feo and his Court, Miss FIESTA and other FIESTA royalty, the Battle of Flowers Association, the Order of the Alamo, The Greater Chamber, the Military FIESTA Ambassadors, various lineage societies, various historical organizations, other FIESTA PMOs, other invited groups.

• The Battle of Flowers Parade in the founding event of Fiesta.

• The Battle of Flower Association is ALL women and ALL volunteers.

• This year we are producing our 133rd parade.

• The theme this year is Viva Amor 2024.

• In 1891, a flower parade was staged in memory of the fallen heroes of the Alamo and to commemorate the victory at the Battle of San Jacinto, where Texas gained its independence from Mexico.

• It is the only parade put on entirely by women and one of the largest parades in the United States.

• Approximate 10,000 participants in parade this year.

• Approximately 70% of our participants are high school students which equates to about 7,000 in our parade annually.

• Typically, we have 30 high school bands, and several include mariachi bands.

• Roughly 4,455 band members between high school and a few colleges.

• Just over 200 horses in 14 different cavalcades participate in our parade which leads to the all-important number of super scoopers: approximately 150 high school students will follow the horses and keep those streets clean.

• We are the only parade in San Antonio with Helium balloons.

• The 2024 Fiesta Flambeau® Parade will celebrate with “Lotsa Loteria” as the parade theme. It is the largest illuminated night parade in the country and the highlight of Fiesta®. The Fiesta Flambeau® Parade continues to light up the streets of downtown San Antonio along the 2.6-mile route and viewed by an estimated 750,000+ spectators and another 1.5 million television audience.

• The parade began in 1948 and will celebrate its San Antonio’s cultural Heritage using Loteria cards created by this year’s poster artist, Victoria Lara. The cards feature iconic elements of San Antonio’s architecture, organizations and persons.

• Flambeau is a French word meaning “burning torch”.

• The Fiesta Flambeau® Parade Association, Inc.’s mission statement is: to plan, organize, produce, and stage the Fiesta Flambeau® Parade annually during Fiesta® San Antonio. The Association shall do so to enhance the celebration for the San Antonio community and its visitors. It is a non-profit organization with 65 members and more than 300 volunteer Ambassadors.

• In 2006, the Fiesta Flambeau® Parade Association, Inc. introduced “Torchy” as its official mascot. Torchy is a year-round parade symbol spreading goodwill and cheer as well as representing the Association’s charitable foundation, he encourages reading, literacy and education by visiting elementary schools.
