Texas Staples by Leandra Hernandez

RIO Magazine

www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

You know you’re a Texan if…well, you know the mantra. You’re most definitely a Texan if you like your food, as that’s a given in the LoneStarState and something all Texans are proud of, especially when it comes to their meat. Whether bbq’d, chicken fried, grilled, well-done or any process involving an open flame, Texas is a meateating state and boast enthusiastically of it! Some restaurants right here in the Alamo City specialize in our proud meat dishes that we call “staples” in our diets and these involve hearty chicken-fried steak, ribs, burgers and last but not least - steaks. A restaurant right on the riverwalk and even maybe a little closer to heaven for bbq lovers is The County Line. Appropriately tagged as “legendary bar-b-q”, The County Line has been serving up their mouth-watering bbq since 1975. First opened in Austin, Texas in a former speakeasy knows as “The County Line on the Hill”, this location’s success spawned more locations throughout the Southwest United States. The owners had a formula for success that still works for them today. Four basic principles include: offer the highest quality bbq along with traditional sides, provide generous portions for reasonable prices, serve up the food on table linens with bar service and last, feature an authentic location that celebrates the heritage of Texas. This formula has worked so well that they even offer an ‘Air Ribs’ delivery service where they ship all over the USA! Two locations are available in San Antonio. Ready for ribs? Charlie Wants A Burger Sports Bar has you covered. Though famous for their burgers, namely a 2lb one, Charlie’s (aka) has some of the best ribs going on the Riverwalk. Open daily and located at 223 Losoya, Charlie Wants A Burger offers up an expansive menu of Texas favorites such as burgers, hot dogs, salads, pasta dishes, some delectable desserts and ribs! Smoky, juicy, dry rubbed baby back ribs, slow cooked for hours are served with handcut fries, watermelon rind pickles and peppery vinegar coleslaw. Can you get much better than this? Available in two portion sizes of: Full Rack $24.99 and Half Rack $12.99, these ribs don’t disappoint. Better yet, if you can’t part with your canine friend, he/she is welcome on the patio with a unique menu available especially with them in mind. After all, Charlie is a dog! Grab a doggy bag to-go or pup merchandise filled with treats and more with 10% of proceeds that benefit the San Antonio Humane Society. Did someone say chicken-fried? I’ll take two please! Located on the Riverwalk, on the streetlevel and also on Losoya, The Lone Star Café aims to give you the Texas experience in all things food and drink. Established in 1981, its plan was to bring ‘a taste of Texas to the Riverwalk”. The restaurant features Texas favorites such as Chuck Wagon Chili, Hand Cut Steaks, and juicy Chicken Fried Steak served with hearty gravy.

The Lone Star Café has one of the largest balconies overlooking the San AntonioRiver along with plenty of indoor seating. Also available are dinner boat cruises so you can dine and ride the river. But, let’s focus on the steak! Named, Lone Star Country Fried Steak, this chicken fried steak dish is double-dipped in buttermilk batter, served with delicious cream gravy, fresh vegetables and served with in-house freshly made mashed potatoes. Accompany it with a Lone Star Beer or Alamo Beer, and you have yourself one heck of a Texas experience! At dinner this dish is priced at $13.99 and lunch at $7.95. Look out for other chicken fried dishes such as chicken fried chicken which is also available on Tuesday’s in their “all you can eat” special from 11am-2pm. “Our restaurant features Texas staples as our main concept because like our name, we aim to keep constant with the Lone Star tradition of Texas food and Texas drinks. “, says Charlie Costello, Kitchen Manager. A good steak never gets old. Topping it off and eating one in a historical setting seems to be the best way to enjoy one too! Located in the Bombach House in La Villita on the Riverwalk, The Little Rhein Steakhouse is recognized for its USDA steaks, large wine list combined with a rustic charm and inviting atmosphere. Established in 1967, the steakhouse has played host to a number of celebrities, movie stars, musicians, athletes, politicians and locals alike. Steeped in San Antonio history, the steakhouse was formerly a site for the Coahuiltecan Indians in 1500 and in the early nineteenth century Spanish soldiers and Mexican General Santa Anna encamped there. German immigrants soon settled into the area and carpenter Otto Bombach developed a two story structure on the site before The San Antonio Conservation Society bought and restored and renovated the building in the 1950s. Multiple recipient of Wine Spectator Magazine’s ‘Award of Excellence”, Little Rhein is proud to boast their ability to pair fine wines with great steaks in a thematic setting. Steaks include Filet Mignons, New York Strips, and Rib-eye’s accompanied by a delicious assortment of sides and salads. With something to suit everyone’s tastebuds, enjoying one or more of these Texas specialties at any of the aforementioned places will certainly not disappoint. Go and experience the kind of food that we boast about and eat in our staple diets. After all, you didn’t come to Texas for a salad, did you?

— Sam Houston

Had Sam Houston and General Santa Anna sat at a Boudro’s riverside table to share a Blackened Prime Rib and a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon, things may have turned out more amicably. So, if you want to write some Texas history for yourself, join us for lunch or dinner. Frommers says “Everybody loves this old standby on the River Walk.” Join us riverside, inside or (with reservations) on a barge dinner cruise.

The

EsquireTavern The Oldest Bar on the River Walk By Nancy Martinez The Esquire Tavern opened its doors on December 5th, 1933— Repeal Day. As the oldest bar on the river walk, the tavern has seen its fair share of history from its great vantage point on the river and it has always stayed true to its roots. “The concept of a “tavern” has a rich history throughout the world- it was the first place a traveler went, [...]a place for food, drink, entertainment, and lodging.” Garry Baker, general manager, says. “We are still true to that concept, we serve all walks of life.” This unique concept was a cornerstone for owner Chris Hill, he wanted to glorify the history of the tavern and preserve it but also add his own touch. A brand new kitchen was installed and there were many renovations but special care was taken to preserve its unique look such as preserving the bar - the longest bar in Texas- over 100 feet- and replicating the wall paper. The bar reopened with a bang in 2011 in the middle of the Cocktail Culture revival. “We consider ourselves lucky to be able to offer good food, great drink, and hospitality with this cocktail renaissance that is going on,” said Baker. “Cocktails before were primarily booze, then in the 80’s we added a lot of fruit cocktails and mixers to hide the taste of the liquor, It is exciting to get back to the roots.” The process of getting back to those roots is mostly academic. The team at the Esquire Tavern including bar manager Houston Eaves, focuses on researching and finding the right tools to build the perfect cocktail. “It’s a historical endeavor- a lot of research goes into it, and we select vendors that carry high quality products, the concept is encouraging people to eat better and drink better,” says Baker. “Instead of trying to get wasted people are seeking a better taste- and we seek to expand peoples palettes and push them out of their comfort zone. It is a super positive thing.” Don’t let this concept intimidate you, the Esquire Tavern wants you to know that there is something for everybody at the bar. “We are not elitist, we don’t frown on anybody, we are trying to provide you with a better experience,” says Baker. The knowledgeable mixologists will start a conversation with you and make you feel at home and try to expand your drink palette. Don’t know where to start? Order an Old Fashioned- described as both “the manliest cocktail order” and “something your grandmother drank.” The Esquire also has a great food to go with the drinks. Chef Brooke Smith stepped into the brand new kitchen with plenty of inspiration, she is known for taking classics and putting a Texas twist with a southern comfort feel on her creations. “She has very high standards, and has a lot of fun with her cooking, she takes her craft seriously” says Baker. Baker’s favorite? the Steak Cheeseburger. “It’s the best burger I have ever had,” he says. “Very rich and decadent and with the highest quality ingredients.” What really sets The Esqurie Tavern apart is their commitment to hospitality; a term that means “an insatiable thirst to provide for the people that are around you” to the Esquire team. “Hospitality is the motivator behind everything we do- it translates to the table side and to each and every guest. We want you to be able to walk into this place you have never been to before and feel like you were just here yesterday,” said baker. “It feels like home.”

Augie’s Show off your new look as you dine on some real Texas barbeque. Augie’s Alamo City BBQ Steakhouse is a few blocks from the Alamo, on Broadway street, located in a newly opened fire red building with two large metal steer heads out front. This is the second location for owner Augie Cortez who opened the original Augie’s in 2000. The restaurant is a meat-lover’s paradise with brisket, pulled pork, sausage, beef ribs, and pork ribs smoked overnight at the original location on N. St. Mary’s Street and brought in fresh every morning. The menu has burgers, hot dogs, 2 or 3 meat plates and a large variety of sides along with traditional desserts such as pecan pie. The large portions can feed the biggest eaters but there is also a “rabbit food” section on the menu featuring grilled chicken salads. This new location also offers steaks to order and has a full service bar with happy hour specials and game night specials. The restaurant is a local foodie favorite and stays true to its Texas roots. The atmosphere is great for the whole family. 32

BETTER?

In Texas, it sure is!

Texans are a proud bunch. Texas is a big state. Texans like to boast about their cattle, oil fields, guns and most importantly how much bigger everything in Texas is. And that includes food and even food portion sizes. But what about food that is out of the realm of even “Texas-size” but falls into the category known as “competition size”? San Antonio is no stranger to having a few of these spots where it’s a “eat this large portion and we’ll celebrate you mentality”. Where are these eating-large style spots? Right here in San Antonio with burgers, pizza and even a sweet tooth’s foodie dream food. Burger’s on the brain? How about a 2 pound burger? Charlie Wants A Burger Sports Bar has it. Among their Texas-size, “big” burgers, Charlie’s has a challenge for the Hamburglar in all of us. Charlie’s, located on the Riverwalk is a place to dine, drink, watch sports, bring your canine friend and oh…take a challenge. Named Two Pounds Unleashed, Charlie’s massive burger is a two pound (32 oz) portion of delicious beef served up on a six inch version of their signature Brioche bun. Choose American or melted cheese, this burger comes with lettuce, tomatoes and ‘all the fixin’s’. Accompanied by sweet potato fries and onion rings, this burger must be eaten in ONE hour in full along with sides to qualify for the free t-shirt AND the burger being given as “on the house”. Priced at $28.99, this is one burger worth the money, but even more so if you get it for free! Take your appetite and friends and take the Charlie’s challenge. So maybe a larger than life pizza is in order and it’s not from one of the usual places we commonly think of…think and do no further until you try Big Lou’s Pizza. Located, not exactly central San Antonio but well worth the trip south of town, Big Lou’s is home to the 42”, yes FORTY-TWO inch pizza that can feed you and yours and then some! Starting 38

RIO Magazine

at $53.00 for one topping and going up from there, this is a pizza to be reckoned with. Big Lou’s owners took the pizza plunge in 2000 when they realized there might be a gap in the market for good quality, fast service and well…a large pizza..something new and most certainly something different. Bringing in a specially-designed Chicagostyle pizza oven for the first take on the 37” pizza started the craze for “bigger is better” and then they developed the idea for the 42” giant size. So popular, Big Lou’s was featured on the Travel Channel’s Man vs. Food and pizza-loving food aficionados have been flocking near and far to know what this large pizza style and family-run business is all about. Go and see for yourself! So, you’ve had the burger and the pizza but what about that something sweeter? Well, something bigger and better awaits you at Lulu’s Bakery and Café. Offering up Texassized home-cooked favorites combined with reasonable prices and fast, efficient service, Lulu’s is open 24/7 and even offers up free WIFI. But to get to the matter at hand…is the larger than life cinnamon roll. Not just any cinnamon roll but one that is three pounds in weight! As Big Lou’s Pizza, Lulu’s was also featured on Man vs. Food and the recognition from it has helped to put them on the map even further than what locals already appreciated them as. Located downtown on North Main, Lulu’s is easily accessible to both tourists and locals alike. Best of all, you can go anytime. So whatever bigger is better food item you choose to partake in, it might be more than recommended you BRING your appetite! Maybe, one challenge a day would suffice? That or just a bigger pair of pants..at least for eating that is just this once, right? Do the workout tomorrow, but for now just let everyone know you ate bigger and of course better, in Texas.

San Antonio may be the original home of Lone Star and Pearl, but its roster of locally made beers has expanded far beyond those beloved Texas lagers. So many craft breweries have popped up in the area in recent years that we can accurately say this city has a truly solid beer scene. And in fact, there’s more good news for beer lovers: A few more breweries will be opening in the coming months. Looking for the perfect pint? Here are our top local brewery picks for tasting and touring.

Lone Star Beer, “The National Beer of Texas,” has a long history dating back to 1884 when the original Lone Star Brewery was built in San Antonio. The brewery was the first large mechanized brewery and was founded by Adolphus Busch, of Anheuser-Busch. In the 1890’s Busch bought Alamo Brewing Company and moved production of Lone Star beer there along with keeping the traditional Alamo Beer. The original castle-like brewery now houses the San Antonio Museum of Art and the production of the beer is currently contracted out to Miller Brewing Company in Forth Worth. Lone Star Beer uses hops from the Pacific Northwest with hearty grains from the Central and Northern Plains. It boasts a full natural flavor that is enjoyed by all.

The flagship brand of the Alamo Beer Company, Alamo Golden Ale is a lighter ale made with the finest domestic barley and floral, flavorful hops from the Pacific Northwest and Germany. It’s a revival of an 1884 created by the San Antonio Brewing Association, now known as Lone Star Brewing Company, and it’s been around since 2003 the company recently opened a fully functioning 18,000-square-foot brewery within a half mile of the historic Alamo for tours, tastings, a beer hall and beer garden, as well as a variety of outdoor games and activities. Tours are held every Saturday.

Situated at the beginning of Mission Reach, a major bike-friendly and pedestrian-friendly thoroughfare to the city’s cultural and historical features along the San Antonio River, Blue Star Brewing Company has been a local favorite for nearly 20 years. Craft beers such as Texican Lager and a two-year-aged sour beer called Raspberry Geyser are made on-site, and the restaurant serves elevated pub food made with locally produced ingredients. Maple-glazed pork belly skewers and brisket tacos are menu standouts. Weekly live bands and entertainment, a Spurs shuttle, late-night shows, group bike rides and countless other community events have made this neighborhoodfriendly restaurant and brewery a destination for locals and tourists alike. In 2004, the Blue Star Bike Shop opened up next door to the brewery; rent a bike there to explore the historic San Antonio Mission Trail, then ride back for a pint and a bite. Open Monday 11AM to 7PM; Tuesday – Thursday 11AM to 11PM; Friday & Saturday 11AM to Midnight; Sunday 11AM - 3PM. Some days, bar hours are later than kitchen hours.

Dude Ranches

by Beth Bond

San Antonio may be bustling more than ever, with a population promising to grow by about a million new residents over the next 25 years, but part of being Texan today means embracing both bigcity life and our cultural tie to the Old West.

Visitors can get a taste of it all, too, thanks to a few dude ranches within short driving distance of the city. Two such spots just northwest of San Antonio — the Flying L Guest Ranch in Bandera and Enchanted Springs Ranch in Boerne — offer a chance to experience a more rugged lifestyle that’s still flourishing in Texas. The Flying L Guest Ranch 566 Flying L Drive Bandera, TX 78003 (800) 292-5134 | flyingl.com Bandera, Texas, is known as “the cowboy capital of the world” and the home of one of the state’s favorite rural poets, singer-songwriter Robert Earl Keen. Since 1946, it’s also been the site of the Flying L, a 542-acre ranch named for its founder, retired Air Corps pilot Jack Lapham. He opened the dude ranch in hopes of creating a place “where modern people can go and find themselves in the midst of yesterday,” and guests like John Wayne, Willie Nelson, Buck Owens did just that. It still transports visitors back in time to when they made this spot their hideaway — in fact, it’s easy to imagine the Duke striding across the rough-hewn floorboards of the saloon or galloping across the countryside.

Grab your jeans, boots and hat in preparation for a horseback trail ride through mile after mile of natural Hill Country woodlands where you can spot native white-tailed deer and armadillos. The trail along the San Julian Creek will give you a glimpse of some of the Hill Country’s most scenic natural views. Over time, Flying L has added more attractions: You can splash the day away at a full-size waterpark called the Lone Star Lagoon, tee up a round of golf, enjoy western entertainment and chow down on some delicious country cookin’. The comfortable accommodation options, which range from a cozy cabin to a spacious lodge, set the Flying L Guest Ranch and Conference Center apart; it features more amenities than any other guest ranch or resort in the area. The ranch’s versatility allows it to cater to families, travelers, corporate events, family reunions and just about any event for an overnight or single-day gathering. An all-inclusive package, which provides a room, breakfast, dinner, evening entertainment and access to the water park and kids’ activities, is recommended as the best way to experience this dude ranch. Through February, the seasonal package is $95 per night for

adults and $55 per night for children. And it’s a far cry from your average hotel package: where else are fishing in a creek and s’mores around a campfire included as part of your stay? Enchanted Springs Ranch 242 State Hwy. 46 West Boerne, TX 78006 • (830) 640-5917 enchantedspringsranch.com With a stated mission to “Keep the Old West Alive,” this 86-acre ranch has been heralded by The History Channel as one of the top 10 reasons to visit San Antonio and neighboring regions. A cowboy’s paradise, this is the Hill Country’s most unique working ranch with two gorgeous lakes, a beautiful waterfall and numerous exotic animals including zebras, antelope, alpaca, buffalo, Egyptian geese, Oryx, axis deer, Chinese water deer, wallaby, emus, llamas, red stag elk, longhorn cattle and horses. General manager Nathan Marks says it’s actually less of a typical dude ranch and more of a getaway designed to make you feel as if you’ve stepped into the 1800s. Its Old Western movie set has more than 40 buildings to take you back to an authentic time warp, making it a favorite location for filming movies, commercials and music videos.

www.WitteMuseum.org 210.357.1910 | 3801 Broadway | San Antonio, TX 78209

“The buildings and decorations look authentic because they are,” Marks said. “We use aged wood purchased from historical ranches as well as items that were used during the time period, from covered wagons to hand tools.” The town’s transportive effect makes it a unique event location and party venue for corporate events and meetings, weddings, rehearsal dinners, reunions, team building and birthday parties. Visitors love taking wagon rides to view the ranch’s rugged natural beauty — and the chance to channel their inner cowboy or cowgirl. New in the next month or so will be Crazy Cow @ Enchanted Springs Ranch, with crazy-good barbecue! Rustle up some food or belly up to the bar while being transported back to old Texas. The ideal way to experience Enchanted Springs, Marks said, is to dress comfortably (Western-style or not) and to watch the weather because it’s mostly an outdoor space. An ideal family destination with a ranch flair, children (and everyone, really) will love horse rides, six-gun fast-draw competitions, armadillo races and more.
