TIME ON YOUR HANDS THIS APRIL? Usually, April in San Antonio is buzzing with Fiesta preparations, then the excitement of the events, followed by the hangover of cleaning-up, re-telling of stories that make fisherman sound modest, and, eventually, lamenting the indulgence of too much good food and drink. In 2021, the 130th anniversary of Fiesta, June 17-27, will be a significantly modest version of the traditional blow-out event. Not to worry though. This month’s Sip & Savor story provides Fiesta food recipes to keep the spirit alive at home. We also have other suggested activities that should keep you sufficiently distracted. Like, shopping for hand-made artisan pieces to suggestions for birthday celebrations. And, as always, don’t miss the three separate curated day itineraries – this time featuring what to do with your dog, your teen, and the kiddos. From pizza at Playland to visiting the downtown Fire Museum, we endeavored to make the partial absence of Fiesta 2021 a bit more survivable.

Keep the Spirit of

FIESTA ALIVE by Kimberly A. Suta

Those of us in San Antonio know Fiesta is more than just a ten-day-long annual event held in April, it’s a spirit, that infuses the city with jubilation, not to mention iconic food and drinks. Fiesta embodies San Antonio as the fun-loving, exuberant party town that loves its tacos and beer, sure, but even more than that, it epitomizes San Antonio’s warm, generous heart, heritage, and resiliency. Although Fiesta in 2020 was canceled completely—and 2021 will occur on a much smaller scale June 17-27—you can partake in about 35 events this year instead of the usual 100+. Until Fiesta returns full-throttle, take this opportunity to keep food and drink traditions alive in your hearts and homes. We’ve brought you some of Fiesta’s favs to keep the party going!

Here, during Fiesta or not, you’ll find a variety of food and drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, but it’s fair to say that one of the most popular drinks you’ll find here, and really at many of the Fiesta events, is a magnificent michelada. Micheladas are easy to make but come in infinite variations. Typically, they’re made with beer, lime juice, chili-based sauce, spices, tomato juice, and chili peppers. The Fiesta Commission’s preferred beer is Dos Equis, but any Mexican beer should do nicely.

FAMILY FUN

By Janis Turk

Kids’ birthday parties used to mean cake and ice cream and bright balloons. There’d be a present from your mom and dad, a card with a crisp twentydollar bill from the grandparents, a spanking for every year from your older brother, and a pinch to grow from your auntie. How times have changed.

16 RIO Magazine

thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Today some folks hire a pony and a petting zoo, organize elaborate gift bags for every guest, and order a custom cake. Parties have become a bit overblown, with water slides, jumping castles, and parents exhausting themselves and their wallets.

San Antonio Zoo Eagle

Enjoy these family-friendly birthday party venue ideas for throwing a fun birthday to still make your kids feel special without all the parental stress—emotionally and financially. TAKE THE TOTS Hayes and Olivia are siblings, ages four and five, and their cousin Jaxton is four, too. So what do these cute kiddos love to do? Play! A perfect birthday party spot for these tots is Kiddie Land next to the San Antonio Zoo and Brackenridge Park. A beloved local institution since 1925, it’s said to be the country’s oldest amusement park. Today, it remains a grand place to enjoy kiddie rides, including a hand-carved merrygo-round dating to 1918. There are planes to fly, boats to ride, and cars to peddle. Tickets start at just $3 per ride, and unlimited ride wristbands are also available for $12. Non-riders pay only $1 per person. Munch on popcorn, hit a piñata, and let the kids play to their hearts’ content. Learn about party packages on the Zoo website. You can also visit the adjacent Zoo, but that requires a separate admission fee. Another great option for a low-key party is to pack a lunch and a cake, and have a picnic at nearby Brackenridge Park. Kids can burn energy on the playground and also ride the San Antonio Zoo Eagle miniature train through the park. The Depot is located outside the Zoo entrance, so you don’t have to pay for Zoo admission to purchase a train ride.

LET GO OF MY LEGO® Westin, Walker, and Lyric are brothers, ages 5, 6, and 12, but even with such a wide age gap, they all enjoy LEGOLAND® Discovery Center, a two-story LEGO® playground located downtown inside the Shops at Rivercenter. Lyric, the eldest, loves the fun 4-D theater virtual reality rides and 4-D movies. Westin and Walker love building LEGO cars and racing them on a timed track, and they like to jump into a pit of foam LEGO bricks. The whole family is wowed by MINILAND, a replica of all San Antonio’s most beloved landmarks, built using more than 1.5 million LEGOs, and there are other giant LEGO creations including a dragon, clock tower, and seasonal surprises. Boys and girls alike will enjoy birthday celebrations at LEGOLAND Discovery Center. Birthday packages starting at $18 per person and includes a turn-key experience where all you do is show up and have fun. The price includes downloadable evites, thank you notes, decorations, food, a private room, and access to all the attractions at LEGOLAND Discovery Center. The good news is birthday packages include minimal prep times, zero concern for breakage, and absolutely no clean-up. I’m sold. LEGOLAND® Discovery Center

MIDWAY MADNESS Landin is a teen, he and his dad Sean share not only February birthdays, but also a love of watching sports on television and participating in competitive sports. So Dave and Buster’s at Rivercenter is the ticket to their shared ideal birthday fun. They could watch favorite sports teams play on the big TV screens and then compete with each other playing on more than 200 games in the “Million Dollar Midway,” including arcade options, billiards, bowling, and virtual reality rides. Birthday packages start at $17 per person with customized menu options like seafood, steak, and burgers, as well as vegetarian and vegan options. And of course, packages include wrist bands to play, play, play! GAME ON, GROWN UPS! For a grown-up birthday party for Mom, Dad, and friends, head to Maddie McMurphy’s Irish Sports Bar. A block from the Alamo where Houston Street and Broadway meet, downstairs they’ll enjoy 20+ large screen televisions, a four-screen video wall, and a 160” Jumbo Screen above the bar, making this a great spot for big game days or birthday night fun. Catching a glimpse of the stars doesn’t always require a telescope nor does it have to mean booking a ticket to Hollywood. The stars are just as bright in Texas, where celebrities like Dave Chappelle, Ariana Grande, and “Weird Al” Yankovic have recently been spotted in San Antonio taking in some of the food, fun, and festivities the city has to offer.

If you’ve ever wondered where the A-listers like to eat, shop and relax in the River City, read on for local and national celeb go-to spots. GARCIA’S MEXICAN RESTAURANT San Antonians are no strangers to this mom-and-pop establishment on Fredericksburg Road that has been serving up tasty Tex-Mex dishes for nearly six decades. The most recent celebrity shout-out came from Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias who, when asked during a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” chat what restaurant he liked to frequent when in town, revealed he enjoys Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant. The popular comedian/actor, known for his stand-up routines that often poke goodnatured fun at his weight and love of food, has made stopping at Garcia’s a regular part of his tour itinerary for the past five or six years. John Garcia, co-owner of Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant, said Iglesias likes to come in once a year when he’s in town to do a show. His favorite menu items? The breakfast tacos and the award-winning brisket served on nachos or in tacos. Still located on the same stretch of road upon which it was opened, John and his three siblings now run the business that

thesanantonioriverwalk.com

was started by their parents Julio and Yolanda Garcia in 1962. In addition to the brisket, which was added to the menu in 2005 and is cooked to tender perfection in an old-school barbeque oakwood pit by co-owner and champion Pitmaster Andrew Garcia, other menu favorites include the carne guisada, the potato and egg breakfast taco; and for those who like spice in their life, the carne de puerco--a dish made with jalapenos; as well as homemade bottled sauces that include an in-house habanero sauce. Sabor! NICHE AT PEARL Like so many women, Erika Prosper Nirenberg—wife of Mayor Ron Nirenberg— is no stranger to the anxiety of standing in front of her closet, wondering what to wear. The pressure was never more apparent than when preparing for a visit from the King and Queen of Spain to San Antonio a few years ago to celebrate the city’s tricentennial. Enter Niche at Pearl, a trendy clothing boutique located at the historic Pearl Brewery. “When the King and Queen of Spain came to visit and I had a choice of what I was going to wear to all the non-stop meetings and events, the only clothing I felt comfortable wearing was Niche, so I went to them and asked them to help me pick out four or five outfits to help me through those three RIO Magazine

days,” Nirenberg said. “They were kind and helped me choose a variety of dresses with just the right lengths and shapes, and I’ve seen them do that for anyone, not just a mayor’s wife. I felt super pretty and elegant. It’s just a special place.” Founded by mother/daughter team Nilgun Derman (designer) and Ayse Derman (creative director), Niche at the Pearl boasts a modern collection of clothing and apparel made and designed in the United States. According to its website, the collection “draws inspiration from the energetic district of culture, creativity, cuisine and fashion” of the Alamo City. In addition to clothes, the boutique offers a variety of other selections, including accessories, children’s apparel, facemasks, gifts, home decor, D.I.Y. fabric kits, and beauty and skincare products.

Gabriel “ Fluffy” Iglesias and John Garcia, Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant

A foodie at heart, some of Nirenberg’s other favorite local haunts include Cafe Azteca for a good cup of java, Clementine for American-French fare (try the chanterelle mushroom risotto), and the B.O.T. (bacon, oyster and tomato sandwich) at Cured in the Pearl. HOTEL EMMA Of all the grand tales that make up the history of San Antonio, the true story of the Hotel Emma has to be among the city’s most fascinating, its early 20th Century love triangle is as intriguing and alluring as the lovely interior of the hotel itself. Music icon and actress Cher was so impressed with the place while in town for a show in 2019 that she took to Twitter to dish about the tale of the three Emmas, a story you can read on the hotel’s website that proves real life truly is stranger than fiction. Once a 19th-century brewhouse, Hotel Emma is located on the Northern Reach of the San Antonio River at The Pearl. It has 146 rooms as well as private terraces with idyllic views of the river, and amenities such as a spa, library, exhibition kitchen, and the famous Elephant Cellar room, just to name a few. Giving & Receiving the Gift of Life By Susan Yerkes

April is National Donate Life Month when a spotlight is focused on the life-changing gifts of organ, tissue, and eye donation. Today, some 114,000 U.S. patients, including some 10,000 Texans, are waiting for life-saving organ transplants. The Texas Organ Sharing Alliance (TOSA), founded in 1975, is one of 58 federally designated organ procurement centers, providing organ donation and recovery services to 7 million people in South and Central Texas, and working with donor families, recipients, and non-profit partners. 28 RIO Magazine

The centerpiece of TOSA’s new headquarters building is the Donor Memorial Garden and Wall of Heroes, where nearly 4,000 medals, each engraved with the first name and last initial of a Texas organ donor, shine in the sun. The peaceful garden with its circular path is planted with eight flowering ornamental trees, representing the eight lives that can be saved by a single donor’s gift of life. It’s a place where families and friends can quietly remember those they have lost, and recipients can honor those whose organs live on in them. Travis Martin is one of the grateful recipients. He celebrates two birthdays every year – the day of his birth, and the day a new heart saved his life. In 1992, when he was born, Travis seemed like a perfectly healthy baby. Two months later, doctors

found a heart defect that would prove fatal without a new heart. A heart transplant when he was just five months old saved his life. Today, Travis is a healthy 28-year old, working with the non-profit Transplants for Children, helping teen organ recipients excel and earn college scholarships with the organization’s S.T.A.R.S. Scholarship and College Success Program, and volunteering with the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance. He and his wife Pamela are expecting their first baby in July. “It’s a very profound experience,” Martin said. “I was told as a child that if I could have a baby it would be national medical news, because of all the medicines I had to take growing up. My life is one medical miracle followed by another.” Martin has never met the family whose gift gave him new life. In his college years, he spent months of exhaustive online searching of available records in the states where the heart was given and in Tennessee, where the surgery was performed in early 1993. “It was so long ago - back then all the records were on paper. Jordan Lopez didn’t have to search for records on the person whose donated cornea helped save her eyesight. She knew her all too well. It was her little sister, Samantha Caballero, 12, who died in a tragic Halloween night accident last year.

Last year, TOSA partnered with UT Health and University Hospital to build the Center for Life, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to donor patient care, organ, eye, and tissue recovery, transplant procedures, and research. Especially during the COVID-19 crisis, the center was vital to provide space when Texas hospitals were overloaded and pressed. In its first year, it played a key role in saving 234 lives, thanks to 77 donors.

She used to talk about someday saving up enough money to go to Paris. I want to go there one day, and to see Paris through Samantha’s eyes.” “My mom is registered as a donor and I am too. My grandma is very religious and at first, she didn’t want anything to be done with Samantha’s body, but I told her that it is only a shell for our spirit, and instead of going to waste it can help other families. Once you are in that situation, it’s an eye-opener how a donation can impact multiple lives.” Samantha’s transplanted organs

Organs that can be donated include the heart, lungs, liver, pancreas, kidneys, and intestines. Eyes, too, can give new sight. In San Antonio, Biobridge’s South Texas Blood and Tissue Center is always in need of life-saving blood supplies for more than 100 Texas hospitals and also collects bone marrow, stem cells, and cord blood and birth tissue for life-saving cancer treatments, and tissue for medical procedures and research. And BIOMAT-TEXAS collects blood plasma used for research to develop ground-breaking new treatments for the international pharmaceutical giant Grifols. This month is the perfect time to learn more about giving the gift of life.

#SARiverWalk t n u H r e g n e v a c #RiverWalkS By Drew Henry

This grown-up River Walk scavenger hunt includes suggestions for where to eat, drink, and play the day away all while searching for the perfect selfie. On today’s journey, we’ll go to iconic landmarks offering the perfect selfie background. The photo posted on social media with the most likes deserves a taco and margarita!

RIO MAGAZINE Ok, your first photo is easy because you’re holding it! Got your camera-ready; because it’s time to take a pic with RIO Magazine. In addition to other great articles like this one, you’ll find everything you need on your search, including a River Walk map and coupons to tasty restaurants and fun shops along the way. Make sure to tag us on Instagram at @TheSanAntonioRiverWalk and use the hashtag #SARiverWalk. RIVER WALK BRIDGE Find any of the 21 River Walk bridges – some are charming footbridges others are ornate old structures for both cars and people. They all make for beautiful photo ops. We’re giving out bonus points, though, if you find the Selena Bridge. If you haven’t heard by now, Selena is a singing legend who tragically died young. The bridge located between N. Saint Mary’s Street and Navarro Street is the spot of a famous love scene from the Selena movie. It also connects two of the cities most popular hotels. Get searching! THE ROBERT H. H. HUGMAN BUST Continue along the River Walk to find your next item on the scavenger hunt. It’s the Robert H.H. Hugman bust. You could say this River Walk scavenger hunt wouldn’t be possible without him. Why? He is the famed American architect and visionary behind San Antonio’s scenic River Walk. If not for Hugman, the city would have made an underground water drainage system instead. If you

have trouble finding his bust, try searching for The Republic of Texas Restaurant. Take a break and recharge with a cool drink and some of the famous Tex-Mex that the city is known for. When the public was skeptical, Hugman officed in that building as proof that flooding would not occur. CASA RIO Casa Rio is the River Walk’s oldest Mexican restaurant. It is famous for its tacos, margaritas, and Skittle-colored umbrellas lining the river banks. This beautiful rainbow of color makes the perfect backdrop for a selfie, which is why this historic spot is next on our selfie scavenger hunt. Since you’re in the neighborhood, you may as well order a glass of their delicious watermelon Aguas Frescas (refreshing water) to go - while you snap your pic. GO RIO SAN ANTONIO RIVER CRUISES Since you’ve been exploring the River Walk for a while, you’re probably becoming a San Antonio expert. By now, you’ve noticed the vivid boats in an array of colors passing you by on the water. These little boats are part of the mighty fleet of San Antonio’s GO RIO River Cruises. Now, it’s your job to get a selfie with one. If they’re cruising too fast for you to grab your pic, stop at one of the three ticket booths located along the river. The boats will stop here to board passengers, and you can even hop on for a tour yourself. The 35-minute narrated tour will take you past all the key sites along the River Walk, including La Villita, the Bexar County Courthouse, all the best restaurants, and the Shops at Rivercenter. Tickets are only $13.50 – a bargain for the chance to cruise through your scavenger hunt in style. Ask about discounts for military, seniors, kiddos, and locals. SHOPS AT RIVERCENTER Well, isn’t it convenient that Go Rio Cruises stop at the Shops at Rivercenter? Because that’s our next item on the selfie scavenger hunt. For this one, it is very, very important that you don’t get distracted by all the stores. Oh wait, is that a Dave and Buster’s? No, we have to stay focused! Maybe we can go after we snap our selfie. Here’s a tip – we’re searching for an island vibe. And we’re not talking about Margaritaville. Focus. Concentrate. Look for the island in the river and cross the bridge to snap your selfie. If you were able to stay focused, then you, my friend, deserve a shopping spree. MARRIAGE ISLAND Now it’s time to find another island on the River Walk. This island is very romantic - it’s Marriage Island! This small heartshaped island brings good luck and fortune to hundreds of couples who get married

here every year. In fact, it has been named one of the top 10 most romantic wedding destinations in the world. That sounds worthy of a selfie, even if you’re single. Make sure to grab a picture with the “Padre Damian Massanet’s Table” sculpture by San Antonio artist Rolando Briseño. This piece of art commemorates the city’s first Catholic Mass and resides in this romantic spot. TOWER LIFE BUILDING Finally, we’re ending our scavenger hunt with a photo in front of the Tower Life Building. This skyscraper is one of the most famous components of the San Antonio skyline. When it was constructed in 1929, the 31 floors towered over the River Walk. After you snap your photo, zoom in. There are some creepy faces on the building that are smiling for the camera too. Show us your journey! Tag us on Instagram @TheSanAntonioRiverWalk and use hashtags #SARiverWalk and #RiverWalkScavengerHunt.

Not to worry though, this shark is very friendly. In fact, LandShark Bar & Grill is the ultimate waterfront full-service restaurant and bar. Inspired by the great “beach joints” that once dotted the Atlantic coast, LandShark provides scenic River Walk views from the patio - complete with an outdoor bar and stage featuring local musicians. Afraid of a sunburn? No worries LandShark has you covered for that too, literally, with umbrellas to keep you, and your cold drink shaded. Plenty of indoor seating is also available - for those afraid of a little shark bite. Traditional American beach food adds to the ambiance of LandShark Bar & Grill. Tuck into a juicy LandShark Burger or LandShark Fish & Chips. A menu nod to Texas includes Taco Nachos and Blackened Fish Tacos. Mmm. DAY 1- DOG DAYS

Downtown San Antonio is a great place to spend the day with your four-legged friend. Check out our favorite ways to pamper your pup. PUPS ON THE PATIO Dine al fresco on the patio of the Original Mexican Restaurant. Along the banks of the River Walk, this dog-friendly dining spot is right in the heart of all the action. Feast on El Vaquero, a breakfast plate heaped with two scrambled eggs, a rich carne guisada, pan-fried potatoes, and refried beans. Or grab a chorizo and egg taco and walk along the river with your best pooch.

Dog-friendly dining on the River Walk

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE There’s a sweet eight-mile stretch Mission Ridge Range & Academy along the San Antonio River that is rich with native plants, woodlands, and history. Mission Reach is the scenic route that takes you and your pup along a path connecting four of the five UNESCO San Antonio Missions. Expose your fur baby to a bit of history and culture outdoors with a walkabout on this trail.

Lick

FANCY FIDO If your fluffy friend is feeling fancy, treat them to the stylish selection of toys, outfits, and accessories from Feliz Modern at The Pearl. Post up with a bright and colorful poncho for your pug, or a Grrrona beer bottle toy for your Schnoodle. This place is a San Antonio staple with an entire selection dedicated to dog parents. SHARE A LICK Top off a delightful day with some feel-good ice cream at Lick. The folks at Lick don’t just think treats should taste good, but they want them to make you feel good as well. Each batch of frosty goodness is hand-churned in-house, and every ingredient can be traced to its source. Get adventurous with flavors like Cilantro Lime or play it safe with Hill Country Honey and Vanilla Bean. And if your pup is the goodest boy, share a lick with him too.

Don’t let April fool you. It’s a great time of year to get outside and enjoy the little things in life. This month we’re getting tacos and treats on the river with our little doggos; pancakes, fire trucks, and pizza with our small humans; and committing a bank heist to bond with our teen-y crew. truck from the 1950s that kids can climb on dressed in firefighting replica gear.

GRAND SLAM Whether you’re an early riser or a late sleeper, Denny’s will be waiting for you 24 hours a day with some classic jams and Grand Slams. Let the kids go wild this morning and eat cake for breakfast. The junior birthday cake pancakes come topped with sprinkles and whip cream for less than $5.

LET’S PLAY! Kids universally love pizza, but it’s not as fun for adults when served alongside a terrifying animatronic rat. Elevate your pizza and playtime experience with dinner at Playland. This gorgeous pizza parlor sits on Houston Street, and it features more than your run-of-the-mill pies. That pepperoni hits different when served on fresh sourdough and baked over a live fire in a wood-burning oven. And the $4 frozen cocktail menu at happy hour does not miss. Get an order of shortbread sugar skull cookies to-go, and let the kids burn off the carbs at Hemisfair after dinner.

FIRE! Just across the road from the world-famous Alamo sits another tribute to some San Antonio heroes. The San Antonio Fire Museum keeps and preserves the history of firefighting in the Alamo City. Kids can get up close and personal with artifacts like fire grenades, antique fire hoses, and a fire thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Don’t blink, or your teen will be grown and gone. Before the little teen-y bird leaves the nest, embark on a day of fun together downtown. TEXAS TREASURE It might be tough to get a teen out of bed, but it’s well worth it for a #20 at Whataburger. If you and your teen can make it to this Texas treasure before 11 a.m., the taquito with cheese is waiting for you both. Wash it down with a Dr. Pepper to meet your Texas residency requirements for the month. GLOW UP There’s no age limit on fun at Dave & Buster’s. Hit this big kid arcade up on a Wednesday for half-priced games from open to close. Get swept away in Typhoon or obliterate zombies for bundles of tickets

on the Zombie Snatcher. Imbibe on a Green Ghost Glow Kone cocktail, and treat your teen to a non-alcoholic “rookie sip” like the Blue Raspberry Sno Glowb. GREAT ESCAPE It’s totally normal for teens to find some independence, but today your goal is to break free together. At Escape The Room San Antonio, you can enjoy a private escape room experience that will build a bond through this choose-your-own-adventure game. Go on a Western Bank Heist, or find your way back to the surface after being buried deep in the earth. Whether you crack the code or not, it’s a bonding sneak attack with your teen.
