Holiday Season on the River Walk

12 RIO Magazine

By Rudy Arispe

Luminarias Since 1973, the Paseo del Rio Association has lit the way for thousands of locals and tourists to stroll the River Walk and witness the magic of 6,000 twinkling lights, or candle-lit, white bags filled with sand, as part of the annual Ford Fiesta de Las Luminaria. The tradition, which symbolizes the lighting of the way for the Holy Family on the night of Jesus’ birth, continues this holiday season beginning at 7 p.m. FridaySunday, Dec. 5-7 and continuing Dec. 12-14 and Dec. 19-21. But lining the River Walk with 6,000 luminarias, as they are known, takes work, said Nancy Hunt, executive director of the Paseo del Rio Association. “We sand them on the Thursday before Fiesta de las Luminarias begins on that Friday, then we load them on two barges and have five people per barge,” Hunt said. “They unload them and then space them out.” Families, she added, come from all throughout Texas and the country to admire the luminarias during their visits here. “It’s really pretty because there’s lights in the trees and the candle-lit bags line the River Walk,” she said. According to Wikipedia, luminarias are believed to have their origin from Spaniard merchants, who were impressed with the paper lanterns from the Chinese that they decided to make their own version when they returned to Spain. Often times, they are arranged in rows to create elaborate displays. The idea is that the luminarias will guide the spirit of the baby Jesus to one’s home. River of Lights In addition, the San Antonio River Authority (SARA) presents the Museum Reach River of Lights through Jan. 2. A River of Lights Kick-Off is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6. Holiday music concert barges will feature performances by Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza competition winners from Irving Middle School, the Children’s Chorus of San Antonio, Trinity University Jazz Ensemble and Youth Orchestras of San Antonio. Yviand Serbones, SARA community relations coordinator, said white and multicolored, LED lights will be strewn under bridges, in trees, along the water falls and underwater. “We want to add as many lights as possible to make the Museum Reach festive for people to enjoy” she said. Families are encouraged to bring their cameras to take a photo with Santa from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the River Level off the Camden Street Bridge at Newell Street. For more information and a list of activities through the holidays along the Museum Reach, visit www.sara-tx.org. Ford Holiday Boat Caroling Back in the horse shoe of the river walk; join visitors from around the world in impromptu sing-a-longs from the patios of river walk restaurants during the three weeks of Holiday Boat Caroling. Joyus caroling fills the evening air along the San Antonio River Walk in December as more than 185 school, church, company, and civic choral groups ring in the holidays by singing traditional carols on cruising boats. Caroling takes place from 6-9pm nightly from December 3rd through the 21st Holiday Arts & Crafts Show If you are looking for one-of-a-kind gifts for your family and friends, check out the Holiday Arts and Crafts Show on December 12th-14th. Located on the river walk, near the Chamber of Commerce, participating vendors display some of the most unique handmade merchandise available anywhere. Whether its jewelry, pottery, or fine art you are interested in, you are sure to find what you are looking for. Enjoy a stroll along the river walk and take home an item that is sure to brighten up a loved one’s holiday. www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Had Boudro’s been serving Blackened Prime Rib, fresh Guacamole made tableside and Prickly Pear Margaritas back in 1836, the King of the Wild Frontier would have left Tennessee sooner. Loved by locals and travelers, Boudro’s is a mecca for great food on the River Walk. Frommers says ”Everybody loves this old standby on the River Walk.” Dine riverside, inside or (with reservations) on a barge dinner cruise.

Timeless Italian Classics at

River Walk Established in 1969 by Joe Cosniac, Paesanos is an iconic San Antonio restaurant frequented by locals and visitors.

With three locations in the Alamo City: northwest, north central and River Walk, Paesanos has you covered wherever you are celebrating this holiday season. Paesanos is well – loved for its hearty Mediterranean dishes, handcrafted cocktails and exceptional wine list. For the holidays let’s get the party started at Paesanos River Walk. Imagine dining on the riverside patio with thousands of colored lights twinkling above from the majestic cypress trees lining the river. No kidding, in San Antonio it can be 80 degrees in December or 30 degrees! If the weather is too chilly for al fresco dining, then enter into the cozy Tuscan dining room with a comfortable contemporary ambience. This is upscale-casual dining. Paesanos ever-popular Shrimp Paesano with lemon butter garlic is not to be missed. It’s almost as famous as the Alamo. For a starter, if you love Calamari, this appetizer is exceptionally good because they prepare Calamari steak served with a duet of house made sauces. The menu features dishes that are a happy marriage of classic and contemporary Italian. Pork Osso Buco with pancetta gnocchi and asparagus, Stuffed Shells with Italian sausage, spinach, Portobello and tomato cream sauce, and Parmesan Crusted Chicken with linguini, capers and lemon butter are just a few of Paesanos’ favorite comfort foods. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner daily. It features lunch specials including a small house or Caesar salad starting at $8.00 for the Spaghetti Lunch and the legendary Shrimp Paesano at $15.00. The wrap around covered terrace seating offers an escape from the crowded River Walk, and is a choice perch for people watching. If you are looking for the perfect handcrafted cocktail, look no more. Paesanos’ elite bartenders are renowned for their house made Limoncello and Amaretto. And no trip to San Antonio is complete without sampling Paesanos’ signature Blood Orange Margarita. Paesanos River Walk will also serve almost any wine-by-the-glass from their extensive wine menu as long as you order two glasses. This is a treat! No more limitations on what you can order by-the-glass. Paesanos River Walk serves daily from 11 a.m. until late night. The restaurant will be serving Christmas Day and New Years Day 4p.m. until late night. Call for reservations 210-227-2782. Jingle on down to see one of San Antonio’s show-stopping Christmas AUNFELS performances and get your Christmas spirit on with our holiday-themed musicals, ballets and even a circus, all of which will delight the child in you and bring visions of sugarplums dancing in your head. If you’re dreaming of a WHITE CHRISTMAS, look no further than The Woodlawn Theater where this Irving Berlin musical is sure to make your heart warm and have you whistling the Broadway-famed hits you remember from childhood in this toe-tapping and popular musical. Based on the classic film, this stage production is the story of two showbiz friends who stage a winter show in picturesque Vermont and find their true loves in the process. Full of laughter, song and dance, this show is sure to have you merry and full of cheer by the end of it. Showtimes are from Nov 28-Dec 28th on Friday’s and Saturday’s at 7:30pm with a Sunday matinee at 3:30pm. Get your tickets online at woodlawntheatre.org or call the box office 210 267 8388. One of our newest and brightest spots on the SEGUIN SA performing arts scene is the brand new Tobin Center For The Performing Arts hosting a variety of musical theatre and Christmasthemed events just in time for the holidays. Kicking off the holiday fun is CIRQUE DREAMS HOLIDAZE, a Broadway-based cirque special event featuring over thirty performers from twelve different countries, twenty acts and over three hundred spectacular costume changes. The breath-taking, unique and imaginative performances feature gingerbread men flipping in mid-air, toy soldiers marching on high-wire and penguins, snowmen and other fun Christmas characters in gravitydefying acts that need to be seen to be believed! Imagine all the Christmas tree ornaments on a larger than life tree coming to life and you understand the magic of this musical performance with songs, dazzling production and an all-around amazement for the eyes and ears. Performances will be held at the Tobin Center-HEB Performance Hall on Dec 11,7:30pm, Dec 8, 8:00pm, Dec 13, 2:00pm,8:00pm, Dec 14,2:00pm.8:00pm. Featuring the popular and adorable characters we know and love, Mr and Mrs Santa Claus, Hermey the Elf, Bumble The Abominable Snow Monster, The Misfit Toys, Clarice among other favorites, this musical showcases the best

For breathtaking beauty and unrivalled ballet, take in San Antonio’s very own debut of THE NUTCRACKER BALLET. Ballet San Antonio and The San Antonio Symphony collaborate to launch this new holiday tradition where San Antonio professional dancers and one hundred and seventy school children transport audiences from reality to fantasy. Tchaikovsky’s timeless score accompanies the beautiful choreography, mesmerizing set, and beautiful costumes that will leave you wanting more. A family favorite, this enduring storyline of a girl and her adored nutcracker who travel through battles with mice and toy soldiers to get to the land of snowflakes and sweets where all kinds of special things take place is a treasure for all to enjoy. Experience the magic of dance through a showcase of San Antonio’s finest talent and performers. For a little something off-the-beaten-path, look no further for a belly full of laughs and a whoompin’ good time in THE GREAT AMERICAN TRAILER PARK CHRISTMAS MUSICAL playing at The Cameo Theater. Curtailing off the already popular Great American Trailer Park Musical, this Christmas special follows the antics and trials and tribulations of a group of residents in Armadillo Acres, Florida’s premier mobile home community. Featuring plenty of bad hair-do’s, tinsel, tackiness, 80s nostalgia, strong language and “keg nog”, this musical is sure to delight adults looking for a laugh and a break from the “sweet and sugary” parts of the Christmas season. Performances run December 14, 2014-January 1, 2015 and showtimes are Dec. 19,26, 8pm, Dec 20, 27 at 8pm and Dec 14, 21, 28 at 4pm. RED HOT TAMALES Since 7000 BC

According to Tamara’s History of Tamales (www.tamarastamales. com), the tamale dates back as far as 7000 BC in pre-Columbian history when women were enlisted as army cooks for the warring Aztec, Mayan and Incan tribes. They made and served the masa for tortillas, meats, stews and drinks in large containers. But as the troupes expanded, keeping the food warm over long periods of time was a challenge. The clever women solved the problem by creating a more portable system, dividing the dough into individual portions, filling it with meat, vegetables, etc. and wrapping it in leaves which could be easily warmed over the fire or eaten cold. Their utah (tamale) was also a staple for travelers and hunters. As time went on, the tamal (Mexican) became a comfort food in Central and South America, the Caribbean, Philippines and has been relished in the US at least since 1893 when it was featured at the world’s Columbian Exposition. Today, tamales are featured at most of the River Walk area Mexican restaurants including some outstanding ones at the Pearl. A traditional Mexican holiday treat, tamales feature fruits and spices in place of meat and cheese during Christmas and New Years. All varieties can be ordered by the dozen to take home for the holidays from several tamale producers. According to a SA Current newspaper survey, the top three takeouts are: Delicious Tamales, 1330 Culebra, 210.255.2023, delicious-tamales.com; Telez Tamales, 1737 S. General McMillen, 210.433.1367; and Culebra Meat Market, 1662 Encino Rio, 210.545.2525.

or...Do It Yourself!

For those who want to try tamaling themselves, H-E-B came up with a simple guide for making one of the world’s original comfort foods with warm corn masa, seasoned meat or other filling and sauce to celebrate football games and holidays. Easy as 1-2-3-4! 1. Place 2-3 tablespoons masa on smooth side of corn husk. 2. Place 1-2 tablespoons of fillling down masa center and roll tamale like a jelly roll. 3. Fold tail over and place tamale tailside down on sheet pan. Refrigerate or freeze raw tamales in zipper bags until ready to steam. 4. Place 2 inches of water in steamer pot. Place tamales (folded tales down) in a strainer basket. Cover, bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and cook for 2 hours (or until shuck pulls away from masa.

Pumpkin tamales: add pumpkin puree (about 16 ounces), vanilla extract, cinnamon and raisins for a satisfying dessert.

Pinon-Cheddar Tamalesl: Mix corn kernels, toated pine nuts, grated mild Cheddar cheese and Serrano peppers with the masa for a nutty twist on a classic.

Cranberry Pecan: Blend brown sugar, dried cranberries and chopped pecans with masa for a delightful tangy flavor.

ENJOY! Feliz Navidad! www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Morgan’s Wonderland To Become Holiday Showplace

During ‘A Wonderland Christmas’ Bob McCullough

Festive decorations as well as a special twinkling lights-and-music show will be among the highlights of the third annual “A Wonderland Christmas,” special evening entertainment for the entire family at Morgan’s Wonderland. The unique theme park will be open for A Wonderland Christmas from 4 to 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays Nov. 28 through Dec. 20, plus Thursday, Dec. 18, and Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 2123. It will cap a successful 2014 season, the fifth for Morgan’s Wonderland – the world’s first ultra-accessible, theme park for family fun specifically designed with special-needs individuals of all ages in mind but built for everyone to enjoy. Regular Morgan’s Wonderland admission prices will be applicable throughout A Wonderland Christmas, and as always, those with special needs will be admitted free of charge. The latest information about operating schedule and admissions is available at www. MorgansWonderland.com or at (210) 495-5888. In addition to the park’s regular attractions and the lights show at Sanctuary Garden, A Wonderland Christmas will feature Santa Claus visits, a petting zoo and Christmas decorations throughout the 25-acre park. Pictures with Santa will be taken from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. for a nominal charge. “A Wonderland Christmas is quickly becoming a San Antonio holiday tradition for families and individuals wanting to become immersed in the Christmas spirit,” said Ron Morander, Morgan’s Wonderland general manager. “Our guests really enjoy the beautiful holiday

www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

decorations, activities and music, and because A Wonderland Christmas is so colorful and lively, they take lots and lots of pictures to share with family and friends!” Morgan’s Wonderland has become the anchor for a family-fun destination known as Wonderland, Texas. The former Longhorn Quarry also is now home to Toyota Field, home of the San Antonio Scorpions pro soccer team; the STAR (South Texas Area Regional) Soccer Complex, with 13 first-class fields for tournament and league play; and Monarch Academy, a school for students with special needs next door to Morgan’s Wonderland. Net profits from the Scorpions, Toyota Field and STAR Soccer help non-profit Morgan’s Wonderland meet its financial obligations as well as expand services and programs for the special-needs community. The inspiration for Morgan’s Wonderland came from philanthropists Gordon and Maggie Hartman’s 21-year-old daughter Morgan. Her soaring spirit despite personal challenges sparked within the Hartmans a deep desire to create a haven not only for those with special needs but also for their families, caregivers, invited friends and the general public. “Inclusion is the overarching objective for Morgan’s Wonderland,” Gordon Hartman explained. “Our vision is to play an instrumental role in helping establish more ultra-accessible family fun parks throughout the nation and the world. Morgan’s Wonderland is a truly beautiful place, and it takes on a special ambience at night for special events such as A Wonderland Christmas.”
