In a recent survey of Tripadvisor reviews where the word “beautiful” was mentioned, the San Antonio River Walk ranked 16th in the world. The world ! I am not surprised. If you know, you know, but I will happily elaborate! This time of year along the River Walk is simply lovely— and lively. From Oktoberfest, Day of the Dead and Halloween events to holiday markets, celebratory parades, lights, lights and more lights, the River Walk, from the Museum Reach through downtown to the Mission Reach, is a fun and fabulous place to be.

Oktoberfest brings craft beers, stein hoisting competitions and themed menus at Bier Garten. Spiritlandia is the River Walk’s Day of the Dead celebration spanning four days with multiple activities and a spectacular night river parade that is even being broadcast nationwide. The San Antonio Zoo joins in the Halloween fun, then transitions to the holidays in mid-November with light displays throughout the property until the end of the year.

November also brings the Diwali SA Festival of Lights with traditional Indian dance, food and crafts along with an epic fireworks display over the Tower of the Americas and another colorful nighttime river parade.

But the river parade that San Antonians believe officially kicks off the holiday season in the Alamo City is the Ford Holiday River Parade and Lighting Ceremony. 2022 marks the 41st

year of this annual event, always on the Friday after Thanksgiving. This year’s theme is Tastes & Traditions Around the World and is oh-so apropos for San Antonio with our confluence of cultures and our UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy designation. The evening’s lineup includes entertainment at the Arneson River Theatre, 28 festive river parade barges and a true “flip the switch” moment when more than 100,000 brightly colored lights draping the cypress trees on the river banks are turned on.

These holiday lights come on every night through January 9, and beautifully enhance other December events such as the Ford Holiday Boat Caroling, the Ford Fiesta de las Luminarias and Downtown Lights River Cruises.

But there is so much more in store. Read on for more ways to enjoy October, November and December along the River Walk, and make plans to return for it all!

San Antonio was designated a Creative City of Gastronomy by the esteemed United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2017 due to its immense cultural versatility, history and superb cuisine. These incredible River Walk restaurants seamlessly represent this honored title.

To begin with, the newly opened Enrique Tomas , located in the Shops at Rivercenter mall, perfectly exemplifies the vast array of cuisine and world flavors that can be discovered in the Alamo City. Enrique Tomas, an international Spanish restaurant, is truly the home of Jamón! As you walk into the well-appointed restaurant, you will easily spot the Jamón Ibérico Station set up in the middle of the downstairs dining room.

Half a dozen Ibérico hams, which have each been cured for a various number of days, sit at center stage. That being said, I recommend you start your meal off with The Jamón Experience, a tasting of their awardwinning Jamón, including the 18-month Jamón Gran Reserve, 24-month Jamón Ibérico de Campo and the 36-month Jamón Ibérico de Bellota Premium. The Patatas Bravas with a spicy brava sauce and Jamón shavings are an ideal accompaniment.

From there, the sky’s the limit with Galician Octopus to Pasta Carbonara with Iberian Secreto. It is all equally divine, but save room for dessert because their blue cheese cheesecake with strawberry compote is a thing of luscious beauty!

Of course, San Antonio’s rich history is what makes our culinary scene so unique. Schilo’s , located along the River Walk, happens to be the oldest restaurant in town and was established in 1917. Although the menu features some of Mama Schilo’s classic German recipes, it is very versatile with a little something for everyone.

Known for their hearty breakfasts, you cannot go wrong with the Papa Fritz Breakfast of two eggs, hashbrowns or grits, toast or biscuits and ham, bacon, sausage, maple links or bratwurst, if you are feeling frisky!

For something a little different, I recommend the crispy Potato Pancakes with applesauce. Still, it is hard to leave Schilo’s without getting the Reuben, made traditionally with tender corned beef, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese on grilled Rye bread. It is such a treat and goes exceptionally well with their famous root beer. If it is a cheat day, order the float!

As we shift to the northern end of the River Walk, French comfort food has never been more wonderfully represented than at Mon Chou Chou , a chic vintage-inspired brasserie nestled in the Historic Pearl. Known for their Sandwich Au Fromage Raclette, made

with warm, gooey raclette cheese on a crisp baguette, smoked paprika aioli, cornichon and Bayonne ham, if you so choose, it is simply heavenly.

However, the Lyon-style onion soup with Emmental cheese and Cognac is one of the most delectable soups I have ever enjoyed, not to mention the lobster bisque topped with the most gorgeous puff pastry. Suffice it to say, you might encounter some nail-biting decisions here and that is before you even get to your main course.

Also at Pearl, you will find a true gem serving Asian cuisine unlike anything you have ever tasted. Best Quality Daughter is, in a way, a piece of art, from the stand-alone historic building to the décor on the interior. It is as whimsical as the dishes they serve, which are guaranteed to delight any gourmand.

Back downtown along Houston Street, located inside the Hotel Valencia Riverwalk is San Antonio’s only Argentinian-inspired restaurant, Dorrego’s , which overlooks the tranquil River Walk. Weather-permitting, there are few more stunning patios on which to dine.

With a full-service bar, lovely dining room and locally-sourced Argentinean plates paired with fine wines, Dorrego’s is always one of my first choices to take out-of-town guests. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the menus are familiar yet completely their own.

For dinner, try the Provoleta of grilled and bubbling Argentinian provolone cheese to start before easing into some savory entrees, such as the Pescado del Dia (fish of the day) or Bife de Lomo (beef tenderloin).

Also, keep an eye out for their Tango in the Courtyard events, which will be coming up again this November. It is a one-of-a-kind evening of Spanish music and incredible dance performances.

Located on the River Walk near W. Crockett Street, Paesanos , has been a local’s favorite for Italian cuisine and time-honored recipes for

over 50 years. They have also mastered the art of service. Expect to find all of your favorites here, including Osso Buco, Fettuccine Alfredo, Eggplant Parmesan and Linguini with Red Clams.

Regardless of how yummy all of Paesanos dishes are, I always end up ordering their famous Shrimp Paesano of lightly crispy jumbo shrimp in an absolutely delicious lemon butter sauce, served with pasta. It is bound to put a smile on your face.

Finally, located within the Canopy by Hilton San Antonio Riverwalk Hotel, you will find Domingo Restaurante, a stylish eatery with an expansive terrace and modern South Texas cuisine. A key part of what makes San Antonio such a special city is its South Texas cuisine, which is a niche all its own.

At Domingo, you can joyfully dig into some of these South Texas flavors such as their Prime Ribeye Pipian, their take on Texas steak served with the chef’s version of a traditional Pipian sauce, which originated in Oaxaca, Mexico.

The Elote Street Corn is another popular dish, made elevated. Imagine your favorite corn in a cup with chile, lime, mayo and a unique Mexican herb called epazote and then multiply those tantalizing flavors exponentially and you have arrived at Domingo.

I hope you continue to explore the utterly scrumptious cuisines of San Antonio and discover some unforgettable favorites you will return to again and again over the years!

With the autumn leaves slowly turning to hazy shades of winter, there are lots to see and do in downtown San Antonio that will have even the shiest concertgoer or theatre enthusiast dancing in the aisles or at least in their seat. It might even leave them wanting to hop on a boat tour or chase a butterfly or two. From classic rock to 80’s pop or 90’s grunge to traditional holiday fun, there is something to do in SA for everyone, through the end of the year.

Four-time GRAMMY® Award winners The Doobie Brothers with  Michael McDonald will be groovin’ minute by minute. The classic rock icons will be the headliners for the venue’s 7th Annual Benefit Concert that this year will honor founding Tobin Center Chairman Judge Nelson Wolff.

Known for their five decades of deep harmonies and guitar-driven Southern rock, The Doobie Brothers have sold more than 48 million albums and were recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So, get ready to rock to classic tunes like “Black Water,” “What a Fool Believes,” “Listen to the Music,” “China Grove” and “Takin’ it to the Streets,” just to name a few.

If you are looking for a fun, safe and healthy outlet to pound out some steam, check out the Tobin’s drum circle gathering at Will’s Plaza, headed by Jorge Ochoa, a local occupational therapist, group drumming facilitator and founder of TamboRhythms, a company dedicated to promoting FUNctional living through rhythmic expression.

This family-friendly event will take place rain or shine and is free and open to the public as part of the Wellness at the Tobin series, sponsored by H-E-B. No musical experience is necessary. A mixture of drums and hand percussion will be available to use but participants can also bring their own percussive instruments.

Think you know the story of Cinderella? This new magical adaptation slated for performance by the San Antonio Ballet puts a new pirouette on “happily ever after.” In this new retelling set to Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev’s enchanting score, the audience is taken on an emotional journey as they follow Cinderella’s adventures and are reminded that how we respond to life’s adversities ultimately determines our happiness. Magical History Tour

October 15, 5:00 to 7:00pm

The San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum (SAAACAM) will host a Black History River Cruise that spotlights contributions of African Americans in San Antonio and explores a variety of topics, including African Americans in politics, education, churches, neighborhoods, businesses and culture.

The 100-minute floating tour treats guests to a scenic river view of historic sites that include the Museum Reach, the Aztec Theatre and the Pearl. In addition to the river barge cruise, guests are invited to visit SAAACAM located in La Villita. The museum was founded in 2017 to serve as a community archive specifically for the preservation of stories of African Americans in San Antonio. Admission to the museum is free. October 8, 10:00am to 2:00pm Butterflies will once again rule the skies at the Pecan Grove in Brackenridge Park during the Seventh Annual Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator Festival. San Antonio’s art scene includes world-class exhibits by local and international artists, and each destination is one-of-a-kind. The true cherry on top of the art, history and fun you can enjoy at San Antonio museums and galleries is shopping. Unique finds make museums a secret weapon for shoppers. And even better: every purchase supports these amazing institutions and artists, so shop away and do some good!

GET A CONTEMPORARY START

On a beautiful bend of the river in the city’s culturally rich King William/ Southtown Neighborhood is Blue Star Contemporary. Every year San Antonio’s vibrant and diverse art community gathers to showcase art made by contemporary artists in our city with the Red Dot Art Sale and Show, presenting and celebrating the work of over 100 San Antonio artists. GO WESTERN

Set your compass to the heart of the River Walk and let your museum hopping take you west, as in the real West featured at the Briscoe Western Art Museum. Through January 29, 2023, the exhibition “Thomas

Mangelsen: A Life In the Wild,” contains 40 of the renowned nature photographer’s most resonant photographs—images that take viewers on a journey across the West and around the globe. The classic photographs were personally selected by the photographer for this retrospective exhibition making its Texas debut in San Antonio and are presented in large format, some of which measure 10 feet across. The exhibition is truly a photographic zoo, with subjects ranging from an Artic fox to grizzlies roaming the West.

The Briscoe’s museum store features a curated selection of jewelry, home décor, books, ornaments, children’s toys and games, pottery and more, including original artwork and prints, all tucked away in the Briscoe’s beautifully restored 1930s building.

CULTURAL CONSIDERATION

For cultural and historical exhibitions in addition to fine art, stroll the River Walk to the San Antonio Museum of Art, or SAMA as it abbreviates itself. From October 14 to January 8, 2023, do not miss “Traitor, Survivor, Icon: The Legacy of La Malinche,” examining the historical and cultural legacy of La Malinche, an enslaved Indigenous girl who served as a translator and cultural interpreter for the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés, eventually becoming his mistress and the mother of Cortés’ first-born son. She played a key role in the transactions, negotiations and conflicts between the Spanish and the Indigenous populations of Mexico. And Dia de Muertos would not be complete without

an ofrenda (altar). SAMA has collaborated with the University of Texas at San Antonio Print Making Club to build an ofrenda in honor of the exhibition and it can be viewed from October 25 to November 6. The Shop at SAMA mirrors the museum’s collections, with globally inspired treasures. A wide selection of goods from unique books, cards and gifts to stunning (and affordable!) jewelry await. For holiday finds and gift shopping, stop by December 10 between 3:00 and 8:00pm for a special holiday market on the museum’s grounds.

STORIES OF TEXAS

For another museum with the river as a backdrop, the Witte Museum showcases Texas’ natural beauty from prehistoric to present. The current special exhibit, “National Geographic’s Monster Fish: In Search of the Last River Giants,” on display October 8 through January 8, 2023, takes you beneath the surface to get an up-close look at the fascinating (and often mysterious) giant fish swimming in rivers all over the world. Then “Toys: The Way We Play,” opening November 19, explores toys that captivated generations of children. For an evening of fun, make plans to enjoy the museum’s 52nd Annual Witte Game Dinner on October 17 as museum lovers come together under the stars to share their love of the Witte.

The Bolner Family Museum Store at the Witte delights with jewelry and décor that reflect that beauty of Texas. Stop by any time for the cool (and educational) science kits, dinosaur books and an array of interactive toys that will guarantee smiles.

How the River Walk Happened

The San Antonio River Walk’s story is as full of twists and turns as the San Antonio River itself. Nature has re-shaped it many times and humans have re-shaped it again. It is still evolving today. Here are some River Walk Highlights.

1921

A catastrophic flood caused up to 50 deaths and considerable property loss, with nine feet of water downtown. City fathers propose paving over the river downtown for flood prevention.

1924

The San Antonio Conservation Society successfully lobbies to save the river.

1926-27

The City changes plans and adds a bypass channel and the plan to pave over the river is ditched. Olmos Dam is constructed on the river north of downtown.

1929

A visionary young architect, Robert H. H. Hugman, presents a plan for an “American Venice” on the downtown river’s loopy “horseshoe bend,” with floodgates at both ends to stabilize river levels so businesses could open safely at river level. Hugman’s plan includes cobbled walks, romantic bridges, stone walls, shops and restaurants and gondolas. The Depression hits. The floodgates are built, but most of Hugman’s plans are shelved.

1936

A group of businessmen staged “A Venetian Night” on the river—the first river parade.

1938

Politicians rally around Hugman’s River Walk plans. The WPA provides crews and funds to build the River Walk.

Casa Rio owner Bill Lyons: “When my grandfather Alfred Beyer went broke for the third time, he excavated the basement of his appliance store for a restaurant on the river. He reintroduced boats and then dinner barges, and started landscaping the river. He really had a struggle until Hemisfair perked things up.”

1941

Walkways, stairways to street level, a footbridge, rock walls and the Arneson River Theatre are completed, and historic La Villita is restored.

1946

Casa Rio, the first restaurant in the river bend, opens.

1959

Businessman David Straus forms a Tourist Attraction Committee to promote economic development on the River Walk.

1962

The City’s Department of Parks and Recreation landscapes two miles of river walkway with 17,000 assorted trees, vines and ground cover.

1963

The San Antonio chapter of the American Institute of Architects unveils a plan for the Paseo del Rio.

1964

Voters pass a $500,000 bond for River Walk improvements, and the Paseo del Rio Association is formed.

1970s

Many improvements are made including long-term plans for development and River Walk beautification. More hotels open and historic properties are refurbished and repurposed.

Hemisfair ’68. The Convention Center complex, with a magnificent mosaic mural by Juan O’Gorman, is completed. There was not much happening down here after Hemisfair. Then there was a diptheria epidemic…. But the Paseo del Rio Association

found out that festivals… luminarias at Christmas and dyeing the river green for St. Patrick’s… brought people down here…. And one of the blessings of Hemisfair was the Convention and Visitors Bureau was created.”

Rick Grinnan, owner of The Republic of Texas restaurant: “In 1975 I was running the Kangaroo Court, and I invested in the Republic of Texas. The drinking age was 18, and 75 percent of our revenue stream was disco. As time passed and the Marriott River Walk, then the Hyatt Regency, were built, it was more families. SeaWorld and Fiesta Texas were opening. When you are down here long enough you see a lot of changes.”

“CONFLUENCE OF CIVILIZATIONS” IS SPARKLING AGAIN.

The large (130’ x 22’) and legendary mosaic mural on the face of the Convention Center’s Lila Cockrell Theatre recently got a facelift—its first thorough cleaning and restoration since it debuted in October of 1967, in time for San Antonio’s Hemisfair ’68. The highly symbolic piece, named for Hemisfair’s overall theme, symbolizes the meeting of MesoAmerican and European cultures, with San Antonio in the center.

After general maintenance work required scaf folding on the face of the building, the City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture seized the opportunity to freshen up the 55-year-old mural created by renowned Mexican artist and architect Juan O’Gorman. “The O’Gorman mural speaks to the power of public art to create a legacy,” said Krystal Jones, who heads the Department of Arts & Culture. “Cleaning and repair was integral to preserving it for generations.”

It was a challenging task. The mural’s 540 joined panels, each weighing nearly 100 pounds, contain some 400,000 colored stones in 12 different colors. While only 100 or so stones were missing, finding perfect matches took time. When that was done, the mural was gently, but thoroughly cleaned. It is also more visible these days, since part of the Convention Center was reconfigured.

“For more than five decades, the mural has been part of the fabric of San Antonio,” said Patricia Muzquiz Cantor, the city’s Director of Convention & Sports Facilities. “To see it today, as vibrant and colorful as it was when it was first erected, is a testament to the city’s dedication to preserving its authentic history.”

Here we look forward to fun annual Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead holiday events along the River Walk, private family gatherings and ofrendas or special family altars to honor loved ones who have passed.

Best of all, it is time for a fabulous, lighted, nighttime river parade; music and dance concerts at La Villita Historic Village; face-painting and family fun at Hemisfair and the San Antonio Zoo, along with days and nights of food, music, arts markets, costume contests, concerts, face painting, food tasting, art exhibits and more— all enjoyed in fabulous mild fall weather.

Across the world, San Antonio has come to be known as the nation’s premier destination for Day of the Dead celebrations. New York has its Macy’s Parade at Thanksgiving, New Orleans is famous for Carnival and Mardi Gras parades and likewise, San Antonio is known for its spectacular SPIRITLANDIA night River Parade. In fact, this year will be broadcast across America by Peacock/ NBCUniversal.

Also in October, downtown will have its Muertos Fest, the San Antonio Zoo Boo! and more.

For some, October brings to mind pumpkin patches, trick-or-treating and corn mazes. For others, it means candy corn, caramel apples and harvest moons. Get ready for Oktoberfest with a Texas twist! Every Friday and Saturday, kick off the weekends with a keg tapping at Maddogs on the River Walk at 5:15, then continue to Bier Garten and tap another keg of Oktoberfest beer at 5:30. Everyone will get a chance to taste a great local, regional or German beer of the week. Or get started earlier with a party parade that leaves Bier Garten at 4:30 and returns in time for the ceremonial keg tapping at 5:30! Bier Garten will also be hosting a Stein Hoisting competition sponsored by the featured brewery of the week, and you cannot leave without sampling the International Frankfurter Box—a flight of five themed dogs that showcases San Antonio’s City of Gastronomy status!

SPIRITLANDIA is the biggest and best Day of the Dead event happening this month along the River Walk. A special four-day festival, SPIRITLANDIA offers nightly concerts, dance performances, culinary events, folk art and family fun at La Villita Historic Village and on the River Walk. Delighting guests with live music, culinary pleasures, artistic delights, elegantly adorned Catrina skeletons, elaborate costumes, candlelit altars and more, SPIRITLANDIA festivities are a heart-warming celebration of remembrance, offering enjoyment for all ages. Viewers will also be thrilled by the spectacular nighttime River Parade where 25 decorated barges float along the magnificent River Walk and live performances entertain at the Arneson River Theatre on Thursday, October 27 beginning at 6:30pm. Many River Walk restaurants offer dining and viewing packages for this special event.

It is frightfully fun, but not at all scary, to spend an October day at the San Antonio Zoo to enjoy “Zoo Boo,” presented by Valero Benefit for Children. This annual celebration is a fun daytime Halloween event geared toward the entire family. Each day begins with a Halloween-inspired singalong as the Zoo’s kiddie train transforms into the Scarecrow Sing-a-long Express. Explore new zoo realms such as the Bubbling Seas, an underwater-themed area with decor any pirate or mermaid would love. Or visit Zoo Boo’s Dia de Los Muertos Realm celebrating the holiday with vibrant décor and live entertainment, including mariachi music. Zoo Boo also offers Cowboy’s Dance Parties, a Cowboy’s Scavenger Hunt, a daily costume party for little ghouls and goblins, trick-or-treating and more.

The parade will be broadcast on television on the actual Day of the Dead, Tuesday, November 1. Tune in that evening as NBCUniversal’s Peacock broadcasts a one-hour, national SPIRITLANDIA television special emceed by Access Hollywood star Mario Lopez. The program, streaming on English and Spanish stations nationwide, will be the first nationally televised Day of the Dead event in the U.S., offering a star-studded evening featuring music, awards and tributes. Young Artists’ Tzompantli Exhibit, displaying 20 colorful calaveras at La Villita that were created during a pilot project of the San Antonio Street Art Initiative’s educational Youth Arts Program and mentored by local artist and public art educator Rubio. The display recalls the racks of skulls of ancient Aztec, Mayan, Toltec and Zapotec civilizations. The exhibit is free for public viewing daily until 5:00pm on an outer wall of Assembly Hall at La Villita and will remain on display for ticket holders attending special evening SPIRITLANDIA concerts and events beginning at 6:00pm.

Throughout La Villita, there will be fun family events, a Culinary Village, a large community altar where everyone can bring photos of loved ones to honor them there and more. Food stalls, tequila tastings, concerts, costume contests and other exciting events will take place during SPIRITLANDIA. Evening events require tickets, while daytime events are free to the public. MUERTOS FEST AT HEMISFAIR

DIWALI SA FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

Diwali is the Indian celebration representing the triumph of good over evil, and Diwali SA is San Antonio’s largest free Indian culture showcase. Visit Arneson River Theatre and Hemisfair Park to partake in traditional Indian dance, food, music and a crafts bazaar including jewelry, clothing and henna from 4:30pm to midnight. Rangoli, traditional floor art, will be displayed, and during the ceremony you will have the chance to make a wish on a floating candle or Diya and send it off down the river from the Arneson River Theatre. The Musical” at The Majestic Theatre, November 29 through December 4. Held the day after Thanksgiving, the Ford Holiday River Parade and Lighting Ceremony is San Antonio’s way to ring in the holiday season. Ticket prices range from $15 to $40 per person and are sold on the River Walk website. Additionally, you can catch the parade in designated free viewing areas between Pecan Street and Richmond Avenue on a first-come-first-serve basis—remember to bring your own chair! ADA tickets are available in certain areas. Tickets are non-refundable, and strollers, ice chests and carriers are not permitted on the River Walk during this event.

It is a gorgeous winter wonderland you can enjoy from plenty of outdoor dining spots, and the lights stretch all along the downtown portion of the River Walk and north to the Pearl District in the Museum Reach. FORD HOLIDAY BOAT CAROLING

December 1-23

“Jingle Bells” and other songs of the season drift through the air and down the river with the annual River Walk Caroling Boats. The Ford Holiday Boat Caroling begins and ends at the International Center Building and each boat makes a lap around downtown. You can either book a boat for your whole family, friends or colleagues, or join in the singing from a table at one of the restaurants along the River Walk. When you charter a boat, you and 14 of your friends and family can cruise along in a decked-out barge with lights and holiday bling. Your driver will play popular holiday music, and there are song books provided for those who need help with the lyrics. Carolers get creative with mariachi groups, bell ringers and full bands, so sing and dance along—it will surely get you in the holiday spirit!

Hearts are not the only thing aglow this holiday season. More than 2,000 Mexican Christmas lanterns come to life beginning at dusk during three weekends in December along the River Walk. Traditional luminarias are made with candles set in sand inside small bags. These beautiful luminarias, combined with the colorful glow from more than 100,000 holiday lights overhead, create a picture-perfect display along the river. Free to attend.
