THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES! I became the editor of RIO Magazine in February of 2015. My first issue hit the stands in March. I had never edited a magazine before, but it was just one part of a dream job as the Marketing Director for the River Walk, so I embraced the challenge. This will be my last issue. Over the last six-and-a-half years, I have had the good fortune to work with a dozen fabulously creative local writers who have endeavored to share their love and knowledge of this city. Traveling Blender, the publisher, and Two Rare Birds, the design team, patiently taught me the finesse of print. I also want to thank the photographers—a magazine would be nothing without beautiful pictures.

Our collective goal was inspiring you to experience museums, festivals, amusement parks, missions and attractions, and taste good food, listen to music and enjoy San Antonio’s culture and all it has to offer. That will not change with a new editor. Stay tuned for more great issues ahead!

Microbreweries and craft beers have easily found their way into the hearts and steins
of America for decades now, but San Antonio still has plenty of room to grow. While we are hovering at around 16 microbreweries, cities like Portland have nearly 100 and Austin has over 50. The good news is that means there are plenty of new and titillating brews in our future as we continue to expand and educate our palates. As you’re about to find out, beer flavors can be as deep, rich and creative as the minds that create them.
Take advantage of the Freetail and Chill special which includes a one-topping medium pizza and a six-pack of beer to go, any day of the week. BACK UNTURNED BREWING COMPANY Head downtown for more scrumptious scratch-made pizza from the kitchen and brewery known as Back Unturned Brewing Co.
thesanantonioriverwalk.com
On any given day, this local brewery has about a dozen craft brews on tap. To top it off (no foam here!), these guys are delightful do-gooders. The “Easy as Pie” Program feeds the homeless community 50 pizzas a week, Monday through Friday, and looks forward to continuing its altruist efforts. KÜNSTLER BREWING Clearly, we all love our German-style beers, and since that’s the case, Künstler Brewing is beloved for its authentically German flavors but with thoughtful influences from its Texas roots. The first craft brewpub in town, its focus is on reinventing old beer styles into innovative works of craft beer artistry including stouts, ales, IPAs and even ciders.
adjunct
For something heartier, dig into the Sweet Italian BBQ pizza made with a housemade beer BBQ sauce. It goes down nicely with Freetail’s signature beer, Bat Outta Helles Bavarian-style lager.
Back Unturned will be bringing back a summertime favorite called The Constitutional Kolsch, a German-style Kölsch that’s so light and crisp with subtle tropical notes, you won’t notice the weather. It makes the ideal companion to the top-selling pizza, Pepperoni Gorgonzola, made with a seductive balsamic reduction, and roasted garlic and creamy white sauce as the base.
MALTS hops
decoction
You can find it and many others at the taproom on South Presa just a few minutes south of downtown or, better yet, at its popular brewpub on the northside at 1604 where Freetail also serves an array of great bar food, including, surprisingly, some excellent salads. The Greek Salad, made with a tangy housemade Greek dressing, pairs exceptionally well with Puro Pickles for a light lunch.
This brewery prides itself on its versatility. This summer, you can happily whet your whistle with its Come and Drink it Lager—a light, refreshing Germanstyle Helles that drinks well with the brewery’s Campagnola pizza made with house-pulled mozzarella, housemade Italian sausage, roasted peppers and red onion.
LAGERS
FREETAIL BREWING COMPANY Freetail Brewing Company gives us the perfect example of just how unique and thrilling beer can get with its new pickle beer. This sour Gose, named Puro Pickles, has quickly become their No. 1 seller. Made with cucumber puree, dill seed, Back Unturned black peppercorn, salt and just Brewing Co. the right amount of pickle juice, it packs a refreshing and balanced punch of flavor.

Blue Star Brewing Company
SIP & SAVOR
When Künstler opened in 2017, the food offerings were basic but have since evolved into one of the most delicious German menus in San Antonio. Every day is a different day to celebrate fantastic German vittles, from dumplings on Thursdays to pork schnitzel on Wednesdays, and even a vibrant Sunday brunch with favorites like potato pancakes. Giant pretzels are the foundation of a fun charcuterie board and pair well with every beer offered—including Puro Southtown, a hybrid Mexican Lager that they add corn to during the brewing process. Their Cashmere Hefeweizen is another popular choice for its slightly hazy, mildly fruity flavor. Enjoy all beers for 10 percent off during their all-day happy hour on Mondays.
Southerleigh Fine Food and Brewery
BLUE STAR BREWING Just a few minutes away, nestled in the Blue Star Arts Complex along the River Walk’s Mission Reach, is Blue Star Brewing which just celebrated its 25th anniversary. Notably, one of the first microbreweries in San Antonio, it has been serving up libations and fabulous bar eats for as long as I can remember. One aspect that sets this brewery apart is that its beers are made with 100 percent organic ingredients. It is also one of the few places to sport a burger made with grass-fed beef. You can’t go wrong with the flagship beer called Texican Lager. This dry, crisp brew is made to be crushed. The Cinco Peso, a classic American pale ale made with organic cascade hops, or Brother X, the Belgian pale ale made with monastic roots, are recommended as companions to the new Fisherman’s Combo of beer-battered Mahi Mahi, fried gulf shrimp, coleslaw and French fries. Make sure to take advantage of Blue Star’s free Jazz nights every Tuesday, featuring a variety of different talent. SOUTHERLEIGH FINE FOOD AND BREWING Finally, Southerleigh Fine Food and Brewing takes brewing to a whole new level, interestingly located within Pearl’s former brewhouse which was built in 1894. The historic building is stunning and a beloved gem of the city. The cuisine is influenced by the coastal classics of Chef Balfour’s formative years in Galveston combined with Southern comfort food.
Southerleigh is home to a custom-manufactured brewery designed by Portland Kettle Works and is a gorgeous sight to see from the dining room. Expect a choice of 15 different beers on tap at all times including a Gold Export Lager, Standard IPA, a Silver King Double Dry Hopped IPA and a truly unusual kettle sour Gose called Piccadilleigh, made with pickles, Kool-Aid and chamoy. All of these pair exceptionally well with Southerleigh’s menu, but particularly well with the to-die-for Cracker Crusted Gulf Redfish in a butter-poached blue crab lemon butter sauce that’s so good you might just lick your plate clean.

FAMILY FUN
Wild tours and good times await! By Janis Turk
BOAT ON BY!
SAN ANTONIO has spectacular tours and adventures that present families with a front-row view of all the city has to offer. Eastside, westside, all around the town, these are fun family tours worth taking. Most are half-day outings while others last all day. Just get out and go! Wild tours and good times await you this summer. 16 RIO Magazine
Seeing the River Walk from a boat tour offers a unique perspective and is packed with fascinating stories. Park near the Commerce Street Bridge (there’s a large parking garage nearby), and then get a ticket to ride on a GO RIO Cruises boat tour. The 35-minute cruise is a highly entertaining narrated boat tour that takes you on a journey through the city’s rich history, from La Villita Historic Arts Village (the city’s first neighborhood and the place where General Santa Anna placed his cannon line during the Battle of the Alamo) past the Old Mill Crossing where Teddy Roosevelt led the Rough Riders. You’ll go by tiny Marriage Island where weddings and vow renewals are almost a daily occurrence. The roots of one mighty tree formed the structure of the island and city landscapers have coaxed it into a lovely scenic spot. Float past many of more than one-dozen mosaic murals that line the waterway. Ride past the 200-year-old Ben Milam Bald Cypress tree named after a defender of the Alamo who was shot in 1835 by a Mexican sniper hiding high in the branches. It’s also a great way to scout out places you wish to explore later on foot such as restaurants, ice cream shops, museums and attractions. Other highlights include the Shops at Rivercenter, the Arneson River Theatre, the “Selena Bridge” where a romantic scene in the movie was filmed and waterfalls. These cruises connect your kids to the city’s architecture (the building with gargoyles is a kid fave), culture and history. Keeping count of the bridges your boat passes under is a fun boat tour game. Purchase your tickets online or in person for a GO RIO Cruises narrated tour. Discounted tickets are available for locals, children, seniors, first responders and military members. Boat tours operate daily from noon to 10:00pm. thesanantonioriverwalk.com
CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE SEA CREATURE KIND
When you think of SeaWorld® San Antonio, you probably think of aquatic shows, coasters and rides. Expand your mind to include a variety of outstanding interactive and immersive experiences including an exciting and educational penguin encounter experience. Your family can encounter more than 200 penguins of various types such as the regal King Penguin. What a wonderful way to spend a summer day cooling off in the penguins’ 35-degree home and interacting with the coolest creatures on the planet! There are also two different dolphin interaction tours. The first one, for perhaps older kids and adults, takes place at Discovery Point, a tropical oasis with a reserved lagoon for bottlenose dolphin interactions in waist-deep water. There is a 60-inch height requirement for kids for that encounter, but don’t despair—there’s a dolphin experience that youngsters can also enjoy. The Dolphin Beach interaction experience takes place on a shallow beach. You’ll all don wetsuits and get acquainted with dolphins up close in shallow water accompanied by a trainer, through behaviors, feeds and rubdowns. Finally, there is the Beluga Whale Swim, the only immersive program of its kind in the world that gives your family the chance to come face-to-face with a beluga whale. about Kayaking Learn on the River Walk the natural history of this interesting species and “become an animal trainer” as you ask for behaviors and have play sessions with a friendly white whale. For this experience, there is a 48-inch height requirement. SeaWorld offers many more wonders than many folks realize—shows, rides, educational experiences and animal encounters.
TALK TO THE ANIMALS
A land-based animal adventure the entire family will enjoy is available just up Interstate 35 near Garden Ridge at Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch. Our family recently toured this magnificent property in an old-fashioned camper with big windows so the kids could get a great view from all sides of the vehicle. This drive-through safari experience is set amid lovely Hill Country landscapes. See more than 40 different species of handsome wildlife from the comfort of your air-conditioned car. There are even some walk-up areas where your family can see giraffes and monkeys from behind high fencing. There’s also a stop for refreshments, souvenirs and maps. These self-driven tours are offered between 9:00am and 5:00pm daily, with discounted rates available on weekdays.

FAMILY FUN
TWISTED TOURS AND UNDERGROUND FUN
While you’re at the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch, you’re practically next door to one of Texas’ biggest and best wonders—Natural Bridge Caverns. Most folks have taken either or both of the two tours offered: the traditional Discovery Tour or the extra special Hidden Passages Tour. Both highlight the wonder of enormous underground caves. Still, many folks don’t realize there’s more to do and see at this outstanding familyfriendly attraction, like year-round activities including a maze, a ropes course, zip lines, gemstone mining, restaurants and shopping. In particular, above ground, adventureloving kids are apt to enjoy the 60-foot-high Twisted Trails Zip Rails and Ropes Course, as well as the Twisted Trails Tykes Zip Rails and Ropes Course for toddlers and young adventurers. At the Twisted Trails Climbing Walls, use upper-body strength and fancy footwork to maneuver vertical structures like the Jungle Gym, Astroball, Twister or the Face-to-Face challenges. Natural Bridge Caverns is more than just a cave tour destination; it’s a place with a myriad of adventures and challenges the entire family can enjoy.

Downtown By Lakendra Lewis
Whether you’re up for a day trip to check out the latest in immersive art or looking to explore the newest in nightlife, downtown San Antonio is bustling with new exhibits, hotels and eateries guaranteed to satisfy the wanderlust of visitors and locals alike. So, if you’re looking for new places to add to your must-do summer checklist, here are a few suggestions: HOPSCOTCH SAN ANTONIO This immersive art gallery with innovative rotating exhibitions moved into the Travis Park Plaza Building for a permanent residency last October, with the main entrance located on the park side at the corner of Navarro and Travis.
Founded in 2018, Hopscotch seeks to create unique experiences that are a respite from the outside world and invoke a sense of joy and wonder in its guests by allowing them to interact with technology-infused installations, many of which are about looking or listening rather than touching. The Hopscotch philosophy believes art can be a vessel to tell stories and illuminate important messages of the past, present and future while allowing artists to showcase their works in sustainable and creative ways and encourage them to be inspired by new mediums to reach new audiences. As an immersive art form, Hopscotch is committed to engaging with and supporting local, national and international artists by giving them a platform that allows them to showcase their works. Among installations from artists nationwide and internationally, works created by artists from San Antonio are currently on exhibit including “Walls Within,” an indoor street art gallery created by the San Antonio Street Art Initiative, “Strange Slant of Light” by Amada Claire Miller and “Perspective” by Gary Sweeney. The 20,000-square-foot gallery also houses a full bar, large patio, food truck and a gift shop full of unique curiosities and items sold by local artists.

Each thoughtfully designed guest room showcases artwork and textiles that reflect the Alamo City, with an intricate black-and-white shower tile pattern in the bathrooms that represent the classic San Antonio quatrefoil logo honoring the four city pillars of People, Pride, Passion and Promise.
The interior of the building features a Bavarian Bier room and a Restaurant-Opera Haus that includes a full dining experience complete with entertainment, as well as a small party room and two of the most spectacular Bier Garten patios in Texas. And with more than 20 draft beers, many imported directly from Munich or craft-brewed locally to wonderfully purist German recipes, steins are sure to be raised alongside beer sampler flights and the largest selection of schnapps in Texas.
Be sure to also grab a bite at the hotel’s restaurant, Domingo, or order a cold one at the hotel bar, Otro. CALLING ALL PARROT HEADS Fans of Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville® restaurant chain won’t have to search for that lost shaker of salt with the recent opening of a second eatery linked to the singer-songwriter.
LandShark Bar & Grill San Antonio, located in the Shops at Rivercenter, made its Texas debut towards the tail end of last year with a menu consisting of American fare with a coastal twist. Inspired by the Atlantic Coast beach bars, the LandShark® chain focuses on fresh seafood, street tacos, burgers and tropical desserts, along with island-style cocktails, cold draft LandShark beer, wine and a lineup of fabulous frozen concoctions featuring the margarita. The new 6,000-square-foot restaurant is a paradise for Parrot Heads and features indoor and outdoor seating on the River Walk along with menu items such as peel-and-eat shrimp, teriyaki chicken bowls, fried cod sandwiches, taco nachos, fish and chips and Caribbean-inspired burgers and salads. LITTLE RHEIN PROST HAUS Every day is Oktoberfest at this updated dining attraction—a Bavarian revamping of what was formerly Little Rhein Steak House in the La Villita Historic Arts Village.

Have you ever noticed how summer, sun and fun go together with red, white and blue? There’s no denying that summer takes on a distinctly American feel, especially in Military City, U.S.A. where we kick off with Memorial Day remembrances of those who gave their lives serving our country, and end things celebrating all workers with Labor Day. The Fourth of July is the pinnacle of summer celebrations. It’s not unusual to see military trainees enjoying the River Walk with their families or see red, white and blue ribbons adorning the trees because everyone knows summer is the perfect time to make a patriotic splash.

It’s the time of year to fly Ol’ Glory high and proud and there’s nowhere better to get your flag fix than Dixie Flag and Banner Company. A short drive north of downtown, you can’t miss the huge American flag proudly waving atop one of the most respected and trusted flag companies in the country. Since 1958, this San Antonio institution has grown from a small home-based business to an industry leader. You’ve probably seen their handiwork on display in presidential inaugurations, football games and festivals. Everything is handmade in San Antonio and you can watch their talented seamstresses at work through a window in their showroom. If you don’t have space for a 60-by-90-foot flag, the largest free-flying United States flag in the world and made by Dixie Flag, don’t worry—it has every size you can imagine and takes custom orders. Roll out a patriotic welcome with a range of red, white and blue designs and fill your yard with garden flags, yard art and windsocks. Car flags and patriotic car magnets let you sport your love of country on the go or expand your flag knowledge with a history book about the U.S. flag. thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Cleto and Family
Cleto Rodriguez always wanted to make people laugh. Today, at 50, comedy is still his passion—and his life’s work. These days, the San Antonio-born comedian is nationally recognized, with a comedy special on Amazon Prime and another in the works, a DVD of his “Work In Progress” show, a slate of stand-up bookings, a slew of YouTube videos and a podcast in the making. For years, he gathered fans with his “Where’s Cleto” feature on local TV news. He even has a stage named in his honor—the Cleto Rodriguez Comedy/ Live Events Stage at Las Chiladas, a popular local Tex-Mex restaurant and entertainment venue where he performs and hosts a variety of other entertainers. His name may be familiar for another reason. His grandfather, Cleto L. Rodriguez, served as an infantry rifleman in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the Philippines. After returning home to San Antonio, he became a highly-respected advocate for minorities and veterans. A local freeway was named after him. “My grandfather was my hero,” Cleto said. “He would take me with him to events and I loved the attention and admiration he got.” So, Cleto planned a career in the service, too. “I took the Air Force entrance exam the day my grandfather died, after seeing him in the hospital for the last time,” he said. He failed the test by one point.
He had another ambition, though—to entertain people. “Ever since I was little, I had a dream of making it. And I could make people laugh,” he said. “In my junior and senior years of high school, I got a job driving a tour boat on the River Walk, and I remember looking up at the hotels and clubs and thinking I could make a living working in those places.” He started out like so many ambitious amateurs, taking any gig, paid or otherwise, and working in a warehouse to pay the bills. Back then, his act was very different. “My heroes were like Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor. I was a dirty, filthy comic,” he says. A woman changed everything. When he and his wife Lynette first started dating, he took her to one of his shows. She was offended by the language. “She told me she wanted a God-fearing man, and I told her, ‘I hope you find one.’ But a man will follow a beautiful woman to church and to prison,” he says. Gradually, he became the man she wanted to marry—and he hasn’t looked back. He learned he could keep it clean and still succeed—in fact, he found even greater success with comedy based on life as a husband and father, and the trials and tribulations of everyday life. CULTURE & COMMUNITY Cleto Rodriguez
“People ask me why I don’t do topical political humor,” he says. “I will the day my family stops talking, maybe. But they can’t stop talking, so I keep writing about them.” Not just writing, but delivering the goods with his trademark grimaces and inflections. That physical comedy is central to a bit about watching a Superman movie at home with his wife during the pandemic. “She’s looking at Superman with his shirt off, and then she looks at me, sitting there with no shirt on and a plate of nachos balanced on my stomach…I said, ‘You want Superman?’ and I drew a big S on my chest with nacho cheese.” When his wife gave him a P90X workout video for their anniversary, he wrote a whole bit about it. “I was sweating off tacos I haven’t had since third grade,” he says. “Even my fat was sore!” Cleto says his all-time favorite comedian is the late, great Rodney Dangerfield, whose tagline was “I don’t get no respect!” 30 RIO Magazine
The seven children he and Lynette share give him plenty of ego-busting material, he says. “I’ll never forget the first time I came on TV. I took the family to the Olive Garden and a lady started staring at me. Finally, she leaned over and said, ‘Cleto, we think you’re hilarious.’ My daughter was 9 at the time, and she says, ‘Oh, ma’am, thank you so much for saying that—he never hears that and we really appreciate it.’ And my big head went ‘zoop!’” For nine years, Cleto sought out interesting people and places in his “Where’s Cleto” segment on San Antonio’s NBC affiliate, WOAITV. He credits then-news director Tom Bell, the father of actress Kristin Bell, for “discovering” him. “To this day, he tells me I was his best decision in the news business,” he says with pride. That segment ended when the station experienced a string of layoffs earlier this year. For Cleto, it’s a mixed blessing.
“Devil, Get The Heck Outta Here,” last winter, it came at the perfect time, with the pandemic at its height. “I think we really all need something positive right now. There’s so much anger and division, we need to bring some fun and laughter back.” For Cleto, bringing the laughter back is the perfect career

#3 THE PARK AT PEARL The last stop on our splash pad tour is the Park at Pearl. The Pearl is located a short one-mile walk on the river or a five-minute drive north of downtown. Constructed in 1894 as a brewhouse, the grounds have been converted into a luxury shopping, dining and entertainment district. In the center, you will find the Park at Pearl and the famed splash pad. You will know you are close when you hear the delightful laughter of children as they play in the intermittent towering geysers offering cool summer relief. While kids play, parents can watch from the lawn or the nearby patio of the Bottling Department Food Hall. Bring your favorite four-legged pal along to join in the day. #2 THE UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD SPLASH PAD Next, we are heading to the southern tip of downtown to Hemisfair Park, located under the Tower of the Americas. Here, you will find the Union Pacific Railroad Splash Pad in the Yanaguana Garden playground. This is the largest splash pad we will be visiting. It features small babbling puddles, large geysers and dancing water arches. Parents can relax in lounge chairs under the shade or jump into the fun, too! OTHER FUN THINGS TO DO AT HEMISFAIR PARK In addition to the splash pad at Yanaguana Garden, the playground offers more than four acres of play, complete with climbing structures, a giant chess game, a sandpit and incredible works of art. This may quickly become the kiddos’ favorite spot in San Antonio! Parents will enjoy CommonWealth coffee house, and the whole family can take a popsicle break at Paleteria. While you’re here, make sure to take a trip to the top of the Tower of the Americas for a birds-eye view of the city. If you want to capture the perfect selfie, check out the mural walls and mosaic sculptures scattered throughout the park. 34 RIO Magazine

DAY ONE - STARS
We’ve got stars in our eyes, but not the twinkling type. Instead, today we’re fawning over famous faces. SELFIES WITH THE STARS Celebrity sightings aren’t unheard of in San Antonio, but you typically have to be in the right place at the right time to catch a glimpse of a celeb. If you’re looking to stage a selfie the easy way, take a trip to Louis Tussaud’s Waxworks in Ripley’s Believe it or Not! There are more than 200 wax celebrities and historical figures to meet and snap a selfie with, so you can easily strike a pose with your favorite Avenger, or set up a mock interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle without fighting a crowd.
SUPER STAR DINING There are more than five stars represented at Hard Rock Cafe on the River Walk. Selena Quintanilla is probably the most important though. This rock ‘n roll-themed restaurant on the river features tasty grub, like grilled baby back ribs, giant double-decker cheeseburgers and an onion ring tower. But it’s also home to a fabulous collection of music memorabilia. You can marvel at Eddie Van Halen’s Charvel® guitar, or check out a piece of the original stage on which Selena performed. The gift shop has some superstar swag to-go as well.
PAPARAZZI PREP If you’re feeling a little star-struck by the summer sun, you might just need some quality shades. The Sunglass Hut in the Shops at Rivercenter has every high-end style from Burberry and Valentino to Ray-Ban® and Prada. Don’t be surprised if people start asking to snap a pic with you once you roll up looking like a celeb in a pair of these bad boys. SPORTS STAR If you’re a fan of sports stars, you’ll need to visit Sports Cards Plus. They’re well-known in the area for thrill-chasing sports card collectors because it seems to be a lucky spot for finding autographed cards. They’ve had more than 100 Michael Jordan autographed cards pulled from boxes at their location alone, and they also have autographed jerseys you can buy as well. 36 RIO Magazine

day two...
DAY TWO - STRIPES There’s a reason S.A. is called Military City, U.S.A. San Antonio has plenty of opportunities to pay your respects to the men and women who have earned their stripes defending our country. ENTERTAINING THE TROOPS The Tobin Center was built on the site of the San Antonio Municipal Auditorium— which was built as a World War I memorial. Today it’s a grand center for culture, arts and entertainment. The venue has been host to presidents and seriously famous folks over the years, and this month you can catch a few laughs with the hilarious Gabriel Iglesias—affectionately known as “Fluffy”. Before the show, you can run Forrest run to the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. for dinner to have your shellfish barbecued, boiled, broiled or baked like one of the great fictional military movie heroes of our time. MEMORABLE MEMORIALS For a more somber moment of reflection, visit the military memorial sites downtown. You can cross the infamous line in the sand at the Alamo. Or cross Auditorium Circle in Veterans Memorial Plaza, where visitors are given space to honor those who have served and those who didn’t return. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a heroic bronze sculpture that shows a Marine Corps radio operator lending aid to his fallen friend. Inside the “Hill 881 South” sculpture is an air-tight compartment with a list of more than 60,000 thesanantonioriverwalk.com
names of the San Antonio soldiers who served in the Vietnam War. And across from the Vietnam sculpture is the Korean War foxhole memorial statue entitled, “Night Watch.” You can also visit the Holocaust Memorial Museum of San Antonio, the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery and the Medal of Honor Memorial. SALUD, SALUTE Pour one out for our fallen brothers and sisters at the VFW Post 76. This downtown landmark boasts the title of “Oldest Post in Texas,” and they currently serve drinks on the patio from 4:00 p.m. to midnight, Thursday to Sunday. Check the post’s Facebook page to find out when you can catch a DJ or live band.

DAY THREE - LIGHTS On any given night this month, the city is illuminated with things to do. Check out some of the brighter spots here. SPARK JOY The whole city is invited to the official Independence Day celebration at Woodlawn Lake Park just west of downtown. Each year on the Fourth of July, thousands of visitors head to the park for a day of food trucks, games and carnival rides in a big lead-up to the fireworks grand finale that night. Festivities start at 3:00pm, and fireworks get cracking around 9:00 pm with a performance from the U.S. Air Force Band of the West. FIREWORKS FIESTA On the north side of town, Six Flags® Fiesta Texas is scheduled to deck out the theme park with patriotic party vibes, dance parties and exclusive ride times. At night, the 38 RIO Magazine
black backdrop of the Hill Country sky explodes with fireworks. SEA SPARKLES On the west side of town, SeaWorld® San Antonio has a Fourth of July fireworks display complete with patriotic music synced with a water ski show, lasers and pyrotechnics. They’ll also be bringing back the Electric Ocean concert series, so check the calendar to see who’s on stage this month. NIGHT LIGHT Throughout the month, you can still experience fireworks with your taste buds at Biga on the Banks. In July, the Biga Traveling Tastebuds team will take you on a tour of Spain for the running of the bulls. Enjoy your tapas by candlelight at this upscale dining spot along the river, then take a late-night light-up boat ride down the River Walk.
