The Official Magazine of the River Walk

PUBLISHER

Louis Doucette louis@travelingblender.com EDITOR

Paula Schechter paula@riverwalksa.org BUSINESS MANAGER

Vicki Schroder vicki@travelingblender.com ADVERTISING SALES Jose Rendon, Jr.

LAUGHTER & LOSS The San Antonio River Walk Association produces this magazine and dozens of events annually. Since COVID, most events have been canceled, including the St. Patrick’s Day festival and parade held each March since 1970. So, this issue of RIO Magazine is packed with fun things to do independently or with your immediate household—like wildflower drives, escape room madness, shopping at The Pearl, and where to dine for Irish food and drink. A few weeks ago, the River Walk community lost a beloved friend to COVID. Jose Rendon, Jr. was a fixture at special events since 1991. His quiet style of leadership, sense of humor, and commitment to the River Walk Association made him popular. This issue of RIO is dedicated to Jose.

Slainte & Ceilidh (Irish for good health and party) by Kimberly A. Suta

----------------------------------------------sláinte – (slant-sha) means “health” in Irish and Scottish Gaelic and is commonly used as a drinking toast ceili – (hee-lee-ah) the Irish word for social gatherings with food, drink, storytelling, singing, and possibly dancing ----------------------------------------------Originally a cultural and religious holiday to honor the death of Saint Patrick in 461, the foremost patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day (also appropriately called the Feast of Saint Patrick) has since become a favorite holiday around the globe for its good food, drink. If you’re looking to “go green” during March, particularly for St. Patrick’s Day festivities, make sure to put these leprechaun-lovin’ restaurants and bars on your list for the most authentically delicious Irish food and drinks

MADDY MCMURPHY’S Maddy McMurphy’s is an Irish sports bar located only a block away from the historic Alamo. With a giant 160” video screen, several HD TVs, a video wall, deluxe sports programming, and 15 beers on tap, Maddy’s is always a fun place to gather with friends. Stop in for lunch or dinner and nosh on their soon-to-be-famous McMurphy’s Meatballs, Reuben All-Star Sandwich, or one of their MV Pizzas. Their Irish Nachos – potato crisps piled high with housemade corned beef, beer cheese, sour cream, and green onion is a popular Tex-Mex twist. For a more traditional offering, try their Irish Pasties or hand pies stuffed with seasoned ground beef, carrots, peas, and potatoes, baked in a golden-brown pastry crust and served with that oh-so-good brown gravy. Although, as they claim, every day is St. Paddy’s Day at Maddy McMurphy’s with $3 green beers all day, every day, March 17th here will be like finding what’s at the end of a rainbow!

12 RIO Magazine

thesanantonioriverwalk.com

St. Paddy’s Day falls on a Wednesday this year, but don’t despair San Antonio’s downtown, will make any Irishman feel like it’s a Saturday night ceili. PAT O’BRIEN’S It’s often assumed that Pat O’Brien’s is an Irish-themed restaurant and bar because of its name; however, its food is Cajun-Creole focused and was first established in New Orleans in 1933 by a man of Irish descent.

Photos by Kimberly

Suta

Still, St. Paddy’s Day happens to be their busiest day of the year, and they don’t mind giving the people what they want - Irishthemed food and drinks. On March 17th and the weekend before the holiday, Pat O’Brien’s, located near Alamo Plaza, will be serving succulent corned beef with cabbage and potatoes as well as a classic Shepard’s Pie and Irish Stew. Known for their tasty drinks, for St. Paddy’s Day, they will make green Hurricanes and Fuzzy Leprechauns, made with vodka, peach schnapps, blue curacao, pineapple, orange juice, and a Hurricanesyrup, rum-infused cherry.

WAXY O’CONNOR’S IRISH PUB Waxy O’Connor’s Irish Pub, located along the River Walk in the heart of downtown, is about as genuinely Irish as you can get. The bar’s interior and exterior were built in Ireland, shipped to San Antonio, and constructed onsite.

As the originator of the dueling pianos, they certainly know how to cut loose and celebrate. Throw in some bagpipes, DJ, face painting, and stellar service, and you have an Irish bash for the ages.

The Irish food here is as authentic as the bar itself, with scratch-made traditional dishes, such as a Shepard’s Pie, made with a rich, velvety brown gravy and mashed potatoes so fluffy I felt I was dining amongst the clouds. Bangers and Mash is a must-try for Irish enthusiasts who know a true banger is made with a very fine grind, and Waxy’s chef does not disappoint. Fish and Chips, Irish Stew, and a classic Reuben Sandwich can also be found at Waxy’s, along with their new Frozen Irish Coffee, tall glass of iced-cold Guinness, or any number of premium spirits. Join them on St. Paddy’s Day for live music performed by a singer direct from Liverpool, all day long or any evening, seven days a week.

MAD DOGS BRITISH PUB Next up is Mad Dogs British Pub, also located along the River Walk. Historically, there’s been no love loss between the Irish and the British, but Mad Dogs has nothing but love for all things Irish, especially in March when they serve $4 green beers, $4 margaritas, and $5 Irish beers for St. Paddy’s Day. They’ll also be featuring a yummy Reuben comprised of housemade corned beef, sauerkraut, 1000 island dressing, and melted Swiss on toasted marble rye. Entertainment will include live music by their incredible house band, Bad Dogs. Table seating is plentiful indoors, at the two bars, and on the patio overlooking the River Walk. Plus, the Mad Dogs staff wear kilts, so that’s a fun plus. The ambiance is always upbeat, and the music always good making Mad Dogs a sure bet for your Irish ceilidh.

DURTY NELLY’S Continue the raucous good time at Durty Nelly’s with sing-a-longs, great Irish grub, and your favorite Irish brews. Located on the River Walk, this genuine Irish pub has been a staple of San Antonio since 1974. Interestingly, the pub is a replica of the original Durty Nelly’s at Bunratty Castle in Limerick, dating back to 1620. A popular watering hole for locals and visitors alike, the pub offers a European-style atmosphere with two fireplaces and excellent Irish fare. Offerings include a Grilled Reuben sandwich made with corned beef brisket, as well as Fish and Chips, Leek and Potato Soup, and perhaps not traditional but utterly delicious Krispy Irish Cream Donuts glazed with Bailey’s Irish Crème. Their St. Patrick’s Day celebrations will take place from noon until 1:00 am or until you pass out.

FAMILY FUN

ESCAPE Get away from it all, and enjoy happy times together By Janis Turk

Everyone needs an escape from time to time. Leave work and stress behind, beat boredom, and make time for family and friends. Sometimes we just need to unplug and recharge our soul, spoil our spouse, pamper our parents, and connect with our kids. Wildflowers near Elm Creek by Matthew Chase Matthewchase.com

Many find rest in nature, so they opt for a Sunday drive in the Hill Country. Some see an escape and family fun through puzzles, games, and problem solving, so they enjoy energetic team-building activities. Others say water soothes the soul, so they head to a river or lake. Escape isn’t running away—it can mean simply taking a breather and heading toward adventure. So load the family in the car and plan a great escape. Happy times together soothe the soul. Wildflowers near Elm Creek by Matthew Chase Matthewchase.com

ESCAPE ROOM You’ve seen them on television sitcoms, you’ve heard about them from friends, or maybe you’ve even done one as a corporate teambuilding event; escape rooms are a craze with no end in sight. Your family will be crazy about this interactive adventure.

cell to escape. Most escapes take an hour or less and are appropriate for families with kids. Choose an escape game based on your comfort level. If family members want to come along but would rather not participate, many venues have monitors to watch - and be included in the fun.

Escape rooms are hands-on group game venues created by professional game designers, organizational behaviorists, psychologists, mathematicians, lighting, and set engineers. Challenging and fun, escape rooms encourage teamwork and involve brain teasers and friendly competition.

MY BLUE HEAVEN Nothing like big blue skies, wide-open spaces, fresh air, and wildflowers epitomizes Texas at its best. Mid-March to early April is usually the best time to see Bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush, and other wildflowers blanket Texas highways. Many folks head to Fredericksburg or the Willow City Loop near Johnson City to see bluebonnet blooms at their best. However, you needn’t drive nearly that far to find gorgeous wildflowers. The area around Bandera and Boerne offers gorgeous blossoms. Guadalupe River State Park has four miles of river frontage and 13 miles of hike-andbike trails that ramble among stands of colorful wildflowers just outside of San Antonio. Most years, rangers there offer a guided wildflower walk in mid-March and offer “The Legend of the Bluebonnet” reading and hike toward the end of the month. (Check out the website and calendar for dates this year). Even along the Mission Reach and near the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, bluebonnets and other Texas wildflowers adorn areas along hike and bike trails. The Pickle Parkway toll road (Texas State Highway 130) stretching from Seguin to Austin offers remarkably breathtaking seas of bluebonnets during the peak of wildflower season, too.

Family members of all ages (usually in groups of ten or fewer) will enjoy rooms with different puzzles and themes. You’ve got just 60-minutes to find your way out of a locked room based on a fun storyline, using just your brain and a series of puzzles, clues, plot twists, and challenges. Imagine this scenario in clever spaces enhanced with impressive lighting effects, entertaining set designs, thunderous sounds, and more.

Go Rio Cruises

San Antonio escape rooms and panic rooms offer exciting and interactive reality entertainment. Game rooms are thoroughly disinfected and sanitized before each new group begins. Team members on hand help to maintain social distancing between groups and wear face masks for safety. Escape the Room San Antonio, Extreme Escape, Komnata Quest, and Great Room Escape, and the San Antonio Panic Room are just a few of many escape rooms in the area. These mystery-theatre-meetsreality immersive experiences include different levels of difficulty. Others (like zombie-themed rooms) tend to be a bit creepy or have things that jump out and scare guests. In contrast, most have family-friendly storylines like an old Wild West bank heist, a cabin, vault, or prison

A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT Nothing soothes the soul like water. Sail away on a sunny March day on a kayak on the San Antonio River’s Mission Reach stretch. Board a GO RIO Cruises boat ride on the River Walk downtown – slated to be dyed Shamrock green March 13, 14, and 17. Then stop at Durty Nelly’s Pub for sing-a-long fun and Irish treats like corned beef and cabbage or a Rueben sandwich accompanied by a brew (or soft drink) to celebrate St. Patrick’s day. The charming establishment is quaint and offers limited seating both inside and out. Another popular, and much larger restaurant on the River Walk for great Irish eats, is Mad Dog’s British Pub. They, too, have indoor and outdoor seating with RIO Magazine

Experiences equal excitement, and excitement equals entertainment. Today being entertained doesn’t have to be a passive experience, like sitting back and watching a show.

LEGOLAND Discovery Center

20 RIO Magazine

thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Today’s entertainment means energy, action, and imagination, and the best adventures are interactive ones shared with family and friends. So, check out these super-duper San Antonio spots where enthusiasm and energy equal Texas-sized fun. LEGOLAND Discovery Center

SEA MORE OF SA When was the last time you’ve been to SeaWorld San Antonio? Well, that’s been too long. Now open year-round, make a big splash at this mega marine mammal theme park, with interactive animal experiences, rides, and animal rehabilitation centers at this sprawling SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment complex. The park features orca, sea lion, and dolphin presentations and zoological displays featuring a myriad of marine life like sea turtles, sharks, and penguins. For a fascinating “Orca Encounter,” enjoy a thrilling educational killer whale presentation. Then head over to the Ocean Discovery area for an equally educational show featuring dolphins and beluga whales. Another favorite is Clyde & Seamore’s Sea Lion High, where sea lions show off their smarts. Still, you don’t have to sit back and watch a show to be entertained. SeaWorld is home to thrilling wet and wild rides, including Wave Breaker: the Rescue Coaster, the Great White, the Steel Eel, the Journey to Atlantis water roller coaster, as well as the Texas Stingray - the longest, tallest, fastest wooden roller coaster in Texas! There are even non-roller-coaster rides for all ages to enjoy, like the Super Grover’s Box Car race for younger tots and Sesame Street Bay of Play, featuring rides shows and Sea World’s Steel Eel appearances by your favorite Sesame Street friends.

BUILDING BLOCKS OF A GOOD TIME Sure you remember the Alamo—you’ve seen it lots of times—but you’ve never seen it like this! At San Antonio’s LEGOLAND®, a massive two-story LEGO® playground located downtown inside the Shops at Rivercenter steps away from the real Alamo and the River Walk, you will see a replica of the Alamo mission made entirely of LEGO bricks. It’s all part of an astonishing LEGO display featuring San Antonio’s favorite landmarks, like the Alamo, River Walk, Tower of Americas, and more. This super impressive model, called MINILAND, was built using more than 1.6 million LEGOs. The Alamodome replica contains more than 50,000 LEGO blocks. Crazy to imagine, it took master model builders more than 520 hours to make it; that’s longer than it would take to drive across the state of Texas 43 times! The display is interactive and changes seasonally. Race a kayak, watch a football game, oo-and-ah over the fireworks as the sun sets over MINILAND. Still, MINILAND is just a mini-part of the fun found here. The entire LEGOLAND complex is colorful and exciting, with so much to see and do. Visitors can play with large LEGO bricks and jump in piles of foam LEGOs. They can immerse themselves in a virtual LEGO world filled with 4-D fun experiences, like taking flight on the Merlin’s Apprentice ride, blasting skeletons on the Kingdom Quest adventure, seeing favorite characters in the three movies in a 4D theater, and building massive LEGO creations.

Building LEGO cars is a favorite activity, typically followed by a friendly competition of racing them on the timed track. LEGOLAND is designed for kids 17 years of age and younger; however, it can bring out the kid in anyone. Besides, it’s a great indoor stop after a stroll or boat ride along the River Walk. An adult must accompany youths under 18. And those 18 and over must be accompanied by a youth.

thesanantonioriverwalk.com

The sea animals alone make SeaWorld extraordinary, but it’s also a great place to walk through the gigantic outdoor park, enjoy fun outdoor rides, and get up close and personal with some of the world’s most stunning sea creatures. Check out their website for spring break special events. SANTIKOS: MOVIE THEATERS REIMAGINED For nearly a century, going to movies in America was just about popcorn and picture shows, and for decades, the Santikos’ name was synonymous with cinema. entertainment complex, just a 30-minute trip east of downtown. A visit to this exciting cinema and game space will certainly change how folks think of movie theatres and entertainment in general, and families and friends are sure to meet here for a marvelous and active time.

With nine theatres spread across the city, movies are still at the heart of the Santikos experience, but now you can also bowl, play laser tag, get lost in virtual reality games, and play in the arcade. IMAX® cinema and Santikos AVX movie projection auditoriums are the hallmarks of this new handson, interactive, packed full-on-fun world of entertainment. Finding treasures in San Antonio is easy when you explore the San Antonio River banks - where the world is your oyster, which means you’ll definitely find a pearl. Or The Pearl, to be exact. A destination that offers chic ambiance amidst a reimagined brewery and something new every time you visit. The dog and family-friendly atmosphere seamlessly work with couples on romantic strolls. Perhaps it’s the repurposed brewing equipment used as planters, trellis, and fountains or the lush and impeccably manicured grounds. The Pearl is packed with atmosphere, shops filled with local flavor, and phenomenal food options making it a must-visit destination. If you need a pop of cheer or a good laugh, Feliz Modern Pop is waiting to uplift and brighten your day with the perfect gift for yourself or anyone you want to make smile. It is the selfdescribed “Home of Happy.” Fantastically styled windows serve as a beacon drawing you in with pops of color and whimsy. all, it’s what former First Lady Laura Bush gifted President George W. Bush for his birthday this year. You can’t get more Texan than that. For more comfortably stylish fashion options, find your niche at Niche. You can enjoy shopping for flattering, well-made clothes along with an array of accessories, from hats and purses to one of the most eclectic collections of jewelry you’ll find in San Antonio. Niche also offers home décor items to rival their beautiful clothes, including a new plant line featuring kokedama, a Japanese technique of encasing the roots and soil in moss and wrapping with twine to create living sculptures. The store offers kokedama plants, herbs, and succulents that hang or perch on stands. Another fun find is The Stitch at Niche, offering tough-to-find fabrics, buttons, sewing patterns, and findings. Niche has always been lifestyle-focused, but its new offerings truly elevate the shopping experience. The clean, industrial space is warm and inviting, especially with the mix of home goods, candles, and fragrances the store offers. And the staff help you find the perfect piece. No matter what you take home, it will be an instant favorite in your collection. The color at Pearl is not limited to fashion, so when you’re ready to nosh, a stop at Bakery Lorraine offers an array of Insta-worthy fare. Every pastry in the display case is perfect for enjoying inside, outdoors, or curbside pick-up. It’s easy to understand why people are addicted to their housemade pop tarts or any concoction that comes from its talented kitchen. But be warned: it’s almost impossible to decide what flavors to choose, and second, it’s pretty darn hard to share. Just buy two boxes, you’ll thank me later. Natural Bridge Caverns

DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS By Susan Yerkes

Cascade Cav erns

Deep in the heart of the Texas landscape lie thousands of mysterious caves and caverns. Many have yet to be explored; some are small, but a few are places of wonder, with majestic open vistas and wild geologic formations cloaked in underground darkness. Caves are as old as geologic time. They are found around the world in all kinds of amazing places, from coastal cliffs hammered out by harsh tides to underground volcanic tubes where boiling lava hardened around them – even in icy glaciers, carved by melting water. Most of the world’s caves are like those found in Texas – called karst caves. Karst rock, usually a calcite mix of limestone, sandstone, and other materials is slowly dissolved by slightly acidic water. When rainwater mixes with carbon dioxide as it falls through the air, a little acid is created and grows stronger when the water mixes with soil. As it seeps into the ground, the water begins its long, slow journey eating away at the land. Karst formations make up the aquifers provide precious water for 25% of the world, including San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country. They also are where caves are born. It’s a very slow journey to creation. Geologists say it takes at least 100,000 years to form a cave wide enough for a human to squeeze inside. That gave the earth plenty of time to form caves, though, even long before dinosaurs roamed the earth. By the time humans came on the scene, caverns stood ready to provide instant shelter from the elements – thus the word “caveman.” thesanantonioriverwalk.com

In the last few centuries, science and technology have made exploring and charting caves much easier, and a few of the largest and most aweinspiring are now opened up with wide passages, lighting, stone steps, and handrails, so visitors can experience the breathtaking vistas and aweinspiring underground palaces of nature. This is the perfect time to discover the wonder of caves. 2021 is the International Year of Caves and Karst, supported by UNESCO and hundreds of other organizations around the world. You can find reams of information and references on the IYCK website, along with announcements and special events. There are nearly 3,000 such caves in the Texas Hill Country. And two of the biggest and most beautiful “show caves” are just a stone’s throw from San Antonio. CASCADE CAVERNS The oldest show cave in Texas, Cascade Caverns opened to visitors in 1932, but it already had

click on this: CASCADE CAVERNS Cascadecaverns.com NATURAL BRIDGE CAVERNS Naturalbridgecaverns.com INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF CAVES AND KARST Iyck2021.org centuries of history. Lipan Apaches used it as early as the 1700s, and by 1800 European settlers knew it. Legend has it that a heartbroken German immigrant known as “the Hermit of the Cavern” lived alone there for years. Nobody knew about the glorious chambers deep in the cave, though, until 1928, when famous cave explorer Frank Nicholson put a flashlight in a half-gallon Mason jar, dived through a series of watery, muddy sumps, and dug through to find the massive open space of the Cathedral Room, with its majestic waterfall – the cascade that gave the cave its name. By 1932, with passages cleared and more fabulous formations discovered, owners Alfred and Edith Gray were able to open the cave to tourists and researchers. Bones of bison, mastodons, and saber-toothed tigers have been found in the cave, but today the inhabitants are tiny, rare cave beetles and crickets, tri-color bats, and a very rare type of salamander. You’re unlikely to run into any of them. But dinosaurloving visitors can still see a giant T. Rex created RIO Magazine

for the 1993 Disney movie Fatherhood, which was partially filmed here. Hour-long guided tours start at the famous “Peep In the Deep” entrance, and pass through half a mile or so of open, winding stone corridors where hundreds of spectacular and unusual formations delight the eye. The Imagination Room, Lake Room, and Storm Canyon lead to the magnificent Cathedral Room with its grand waterfall. The Diamond Ceiling twinkles with hundreds of sparkling baby stalactites, and the Grotto, between the Imagination Room and Storm Canyon, has an aura of peaceful mystery. Look for the Twin Sisters formation and the Giant Molar. Groups of 10 or more can book a cool evening Flashlight Tour. Want to stay around? The pretty, peaceful RV campground is a popular place for visitors who want to explore Boerne and more of the surrounding Hill Country. NATURAL BRIDGE CAVERNS Natural Bridge Caverns, named for a striking 60-foot natural stone bridge above a large sinkhole, is the largest cave of its kind in Texas. Yet the Wuest family, owners of the land for five generations, had no idea what lay beneath them 30 RIO Magazine

for almost a century. “Our family always knew about the cave, and people would come to look around, but nobody thought it was anything remarkable,” said current co-owner Travis Wuest. That changed in 1960 when a group of local college students who had asked to check out the area and brought Wuest’s grandmother Clara the amazing news of a huge underground chamber they had found about 60 feet below the surface. She didn’t believe them at first. But it was true, and the underground exploration began in earnest. In 1964, then Texas Governor John Connally officially dedicated Natural Bridge Caverns, and it opened to the public. Great chambers and mysterious shadow-filled passages bear fanciful names. Sherwood Forest, the Castle of the White Giants, the Midnight Dome, and Frozen Falls all evoke the sense of wonder visitors experience in these majestic subterranean vistas unknown and untouched by man for millions of years. And the cave is still alive and growing, with water carving new areas for discovery. In 2019, more than 1,600 feet of new passages and chambers were explored for the first time, with more spectacular chambers and formations. The Discovery Tour, Hidden

Passages Tour, and a longer combination tour are offered regularly, and an imaginative array of private VIP events – from candlelight dinner in the cavern to underground “gender reveal” parties (the cave walls light up with pink or blue), are available. Aboveground, the zipline experiences provide a fun birds-eye view of the rolling Texas terrain. Once you’ve seen the wondrous terrain beneath, the landscape may never seem quite the same.

THE

MISSION

TRAILS, NATURE, RECREATION & HISTORY

Downtown San Antonio is home to the Alamo and the River Walk with mouthwatering restaurants, boat tours, mariachis, shopping, and Texas’s biggest margaritas. However, just south of the downtown lies the tranquil and peaceful Mission Reach. This revitalized stretch of the river offers smooth trails surrounded by native foliage and punctuated with art pieces. Recreating on the Mission Reach is quite different than downtown, where fishing, birding, kayaking, bike riding, and picnic spots are plentiful with rich connections to San Antonio’s history. And in March, when wildflowers bloom, the Mission Reach is an ideal place to take your camera.

Confluence Park, Mission Reach, Courtesy of SA River Foundation

MISSION REACH Mission Reach is the southern stretch of the San Antonio River Walk that begins just south of downtown and stretches into the city’s Southside. This eight-mile park contains over 16 miles of walking and biking trails, a paddling trail for kayaks, ten public art and park projects, and connections to four San Antonio World Heritage Mission Sites; Mission San Juan Capistrano, Mission Espada, Mission San Jose, and Mission Concepcion. Look for miles markers embedded in the sidewalk to track your distance walked. These Missions date back to the 1720s and pair nicely with newly designed public art projects offering a unique view into both the past and future of San Antonio. 32 RIO Magazine

MISSION CONCEPCION + CONCEPCION PARK As you walk the trails, allow yourself time to tour a historic mission. Mission Concepcion is an excellent option for “active” history buffs because it connects to Concepcion Park and Sports Complex. Mission Concepcion was dedicated in 1755, and not much has changed over the last few centuries. It is famed for being the oldest unrestored stone church in the country. Concepcion Park and Sports Complex is a newer addition to the historic landscape. This 21-acre

park offers playgrounds, a public swimming pool, baseball fields, volleyball courts, basketball courts, and soccer fields. Courts are available to rent, so bring your friends and equipment to start a game! RIVERSIDE GOLF COURSE Travel further down the river to Riverside Golf Course. It is one of San Antonio’s oldest courses in the city, and it offers two unique nine-hole courses. One was built in 1929 and the other in 1961. The front nine features complex water traps and treelined fairways, where the back course offers open greens and room to hit a birdie. It is a fun course for both experienced golfers and beginners, making it a great option for the whole family. This course also has a unique tie to history. President Teddy Roosevelt used to spend a great deal of time in South San Antonio. In 1898, he came RIO Magazine

to the city to train with the 1st Volunteer Calvary, or Rough Riders, who fought on San Juan Hill during the Spanish American War. Before becoming a golf course, this land served as the training ground for Roosevelt and his men. How often do you get to have a tee time on military training grounds? HOT WELLS CONSERVANCY President Roosevelt wasn’t the only president or celebrity visiting San Antonio back in the day. The Hot Wells Hotel and Spa was a glamorous vacation destination for presidents, diplomats, and Hollywood celebrities like Cecil B. DeMille. Hot Wells is located along the river on an artesian well that supplied healing waters to 45 private baths and three pools. The hotel operated from 1894 through the 1920s but fell victim to multiple fires. After the wells’ popularity dwindled and the financial setbacks of the fires set in, the hotel fell into disrepair, leaving behind haunting ruins. In 2019, the site of the ruins was restored and converted into a park. The park is open for visitors to view the ruins and imagine the lavish lives of the celebrities and dignitaries who flocked here for vacation during the roaring 20s. Little Rhein Prost Haus

Where new German restaurant meets old German building The new Little Rhein Prost Haus is slated to open on the River Walk this month in a century-old building with strong German roots. The perfect setting for a Bavarian restaurant featuring homestyle German cuisine and various types of family-friendly live music and entertainment, including authentic Bavarian Polka players. It will be a love affair marrying traditional German history, food, beer, fun, and a year-round feel of Oktoberfest! In 1836 Mexican General Santa Anna was encamped on these very grounds during the battle of the Alamo. Later in the 19th century, German immigrants designated this area as the Little Rhein district. In 1847 the historic two-story Bombach House was built with native limestone, as is the second oldest of its kind in Bexar County. Otto Bombach, a carpenter, built the structure for his family. Since its time as an early Texas home, it has been used as a boarding house, a grocery store and bar, a private school, and a hangout for desperados. Renovations will bring to life the beauty of the historic Bombach House. The new owners chose to keep Little Rhein as a part of the new name as an homage to the Little Rhein Steak House located there since 1967. Perfectly positioned on the southern bank of the famed San Antonio River Walk it boasts not just an authentic German feel but a beautiful expanded stepped patio terrace overlooking the river. Inside the main building, you will find a Bavarian Bier room, a Restaurant-Opera Haus that features a full dining experience with entertainment. There is also a small party room too for intimate special occasions. Outside though you will find

two of the most spectacular Bier Garten patios in all of Texas with perfect views of the San Antonio River Walk. Beer lovers rejoice! There will be more than 20 draft beers available, many imported directly from Munich or craft-brewed locally to wonderfully purist German recipes. And, liter bier steins will also abound alongside beer sampler flights and the largest selection of schnapps in Texas. Don’t overlook the food. Traditional delicious and scratch-made dishes include: schnitzels of various types, German potato salads, brats and sausages of all types, sauerkraut, red cabbage, homemade beer cheese, German grain mustards, apple streudel and so much more as well as burgers, chicken sandwiches, salads, and a dedicated kids menu – there’s certainly something for everyone!

on Day one. . . DAY 1 - GETTING OUT

OH, SHOOT! Maybe we are on the verge of a zombie apocalypse, and maybe we’re not. Either way, it’s best to be prepared. At Mission Ridge Range & Academy, you can join a simulated zombie attack or test your gun-slinging skills in the old west. Feel free to bring your trusty six-shooter or rent one onsite. The venue features 26 indoor shooting ranges open to ages ten and up. And if guns aren’t your thing, you can go full Robin Hood with archery instead. You don’t have to be an experienced sharpshooter to play, and they offer safety training and plenty of guidance for everyone.

DINE The Rim is full of places to grab your lunch as well. Our top pick this month is Tiago’s Cabo Grille. This fiery coastal Mexico dining spot was named best chips, salsa, guacamole, and happy hour in San Antonio. Happy hour starts at 2 p.m. with half-priced apps and drink specials. A $6 Gold Rita crafted with fresh limes and Cuervo Especial. But on the lighter side, they have a Ranch Water cocktail made with Dulce Vida silver tequila, freshly squeezed lime, and Topo Chico. Get it with a chili salt rim, and lose yourself for a moment on the beach in Mexico. Polish off your evening with a sunset stroll in nearby Friedrich Park.

SEEMS FISHY Take the hunt out to sea; it’s time for a little trip to Bass Pro Shops. This taxidermy-laden shopping experience is like visiting an extra-large wildlife museum gift shop. Continue your rootin’ tootin’ shootin’ day on the archery or gun ranges inside the store. For a more peaceful afternoon, park yourself on the benches in front of the 28,000-gallon aquarium for a weekend fish feeding. Lunchtime for the 65-pound catfish, alligator gar, trophy bass, and the rest of the crew is at 1 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Tiago’s Cabo Grille

DAY 2 - CHILL OUT NOT-SO-SECRET GARDEN If you’ve got the social distance blues, cozy up to nature today, and take a walk on the bright side at Wildseed Farms in Fredericksburg. March is the month the earth springs back to life, and it’s the best time to hit the trail at this flower factory. Native Texans and visiting tourists alike can snap their first official bluebonnet pics of the season or go nose to nose with droves of butterflies out looking for blooms. But save some smiles for the poppies, cornflowers, and snapdragons as well because this farm is an explosion of colors. Open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day; visitors meander along the fragrant paths for an invigorating outdoor experience. The farm also recently expanded its gorgeous wine tasting room, so feel free to sample local wines after your trail trek. Stop and shop for t-shirts, jewelry, and other fun gifts at the gift shop, and don’t miss the enormous nursery with thesanantonioriverwalk.com

live plants and pottery. It’s one of the largest in the area, and you can take home a bag of bluebonnet seeds. Grab a beer, sandwich, or some ice cream at the Brewbonnet Biergarten before heading out. WINED UP The Hill Country is chock-full of great vino, but you don’t want to miss Becker Vineyards’ scenery. With the rolling hills as a distant backdrop, Becker spreads across 56 acres of vineyards. Springtime visitors are in for a treat with the bonus of bright red poppies and fragrant lavender blooms. Due to capacity restrictions, reservations are encouraged, so call ahead and reserve your spot. A pre-selected tasting brings five wines with your choice of reds, whites, or a mix. Take your tasting on the verandah, and breathe in the fresh spring air. The winery includes three tank rooms and a barrel warehouse, but the best feature is the view at sunset. Order a charcuterie board for $25 and make it a magical outdoor evening.

Participants who sign up gain membership as Friends of the River Walk. Just download and print your race bib, and choose your 3.1mile path and set your own pace. Once done, post your results on the official results page, submit a photo on social media, and they’ll send you a River Walk t-shirt or cap so you can look extra dapper on your next Zoom call. This event supports two River Walk organizations directly impacted by the downturn of the tourism industry.

DIGITAL ART Perseus had to use a mirrored shield to view the terrifying head of Medusa, but we think you’d be safe using a computer screen. Take a virtual tour through the artistic world of heroes and villains through the McNay Art Museum this month. The museum offers guided digital tours featuring activities, artwork, and fun videos where virtual visitors can get a full history and interactive experience right at home.
