EDITOR’S LETTER
The San Antonio River Walk Photo by Bob Howen
SPRING IS IN THE AIR! While the trees along the lovely River Walk are bursting with buds in the spring, the fact is, downtown San Antonio never rests. Year-round activities abound, with events centered on annual holidays and traditions that are unique to San Antonio. At www.TheSanAntonioRiverWalk.com, you can flip through past issues of RIO Magazine to discover more ways to make your visit to the Alamo City even grander. This explosion of greenery is just in time for St. Patty’s Day festivities. Since 1968, San Antonio has been eco-dyeing the beautiful River Walk waters a shamrock shade of green in the spirit of the River Shannon. A year later, the annual St. Patrick’s Day River Parade began and other events have been added to the celebration, including an extension of the river dyeing and parade to the Museum Reach of the River Walk, new this year. If you choose to wander about the sprouting landscape, there are many opportunities to take in the beauty of Mother Nature at San Pedro Creek, the Botanical Garden and the Zoo, just to name a few. Spring Break also brings new rides and attractions at our local theme parks. If the arts are more your fancy, then attend a concert, visit a museum or gallery and enjoy a ballet or theatrical production. There are many to choose from and San Antonio’s support of the arts makes it a top destination for visitors from all over the world. March also marks the 186th anniversary of the Battle of the Alamo. The 13-day siege lasted from Feb. 23 to Mar. 6, 1836 and was just one of the sites in Texas’ road to independence from Mexico. But Mexican culture is a proud and permanent part of San Antonio’s society, and that is especially evident in our cuisine. From traditional to Tex-Mex, I encourage you to sample it all. In San Antonio, visitors—and locals—can easily immerse themselves in the local culture through the many world-class performances, diverse exhibits and colorful festivals throughout the year. I hope you experience them all!

From the Birth of the
Chili Queens * to the Celebration of

JD's Chili Parlor
By Kimberly A. Suta
Mexican culture, and most assuredly Mexican food, has been indelibly woven into the fabric of San Antonio since its inception. In fact, not long after the state of Texas was founded in 1845, Latina women known as Chili Queens would set up in the downtown plazas and cook big pots of chili over flaming mesquite fires.

Cowboys and businessmen alike would be lured by the scintillating scents of cooking spices and soon it became a gathering space where everyone was welcome.
Cuishe Cocina Mexicana
JD’S CHILI PARLOR At the time, a hot “bowl of red,” as they called it only cost a dime, but the experience and the legacy they created for San Antonio and America is priceless. Although the time of the Chili Queen has faded into memory, a modern-day Chili Queen has arisen in San Antonio. Diana Anderson, of JD’s Chili Parlor, has been crowned a Chili Queen and started out serving chili to the people of this fair city and surrounding hamlets. She has since designed a line of gourmet chili fixin’s, enchilada sauces and Chili Mary mixers in a variety of exciting Americana fusions that can be found at H-E-B grocery stores, local farmers markets and online. Probably more than any city in any state, San Antonio celebrates Mexican food, from traditional to interior to everyone’s favorite, TexMex. Where can you find it? Well, you can probably just throw a stone but read on to discover some of my own personal favorites.
Another staple menu item is the Camote Enchiladas plate, made with a sweet potato, a crisp sweet potato hash, chipotle sauce and sauteed nopalitos. They offer a variety of unique rotating specials as well, which I highly recommend, but seriously, you can not go wrong here no matter what you choose. CUISHE COCINA MEXICANA With two locations, one being downtown off of E. Commerce Street, Cuishe Cocina Mexicana offers upscale Central Mexican cuisine, as well as an array of fine mezcals and tequilas. The menu features tacos, quesadillas fritas, grilled dishes, such as octopus and ribeyes, as well as a host of specialty dishes that range from Enchiladas Verdes to Arrachera, a juicy grilled Heartbrand Wagyu skirt steak served with bulb onions and tortillas.
La Fonda on Main
LA FONDA ON MAIN La Fonda On Main, just north of downtown, has long been one of my go-to’s for the most delicious, scratch-made Mexican fare. In fact, they are the oldest Mexican restaurant in town—established in 1932. Their menu primarily features interior Mexican dishes, along with some well-known Tex-Mex. Although they have a stunning haciendastyle dining room, I recommend you dine outside on their spacious patio under the giant shade tree, order a margarita and dive into their addictive chips and salsa, for starters. I almost always order the fish tacos, which are served in homemade corn tortillas with chipotle mayo, napa cabbage slaw and salsa cruda. Ask for some sliced avocado to take it next level.
El Bucanero
thesanantonioriverwalk.com
The restaurant also offers a brunch of scrumptious dishes, like chilaquiles in a classic black mole sauce, from Tuesday through Sunday and a happy hour from 2:00 to 7:00pm on weekdays with 50 percent off on all straight agave spirits, served neat, along with a few other items. Cuishe is perhaps my top current obsession when it comes to Mexican food, most certainly a challenge to my New Year’s Resolution! EL BUCANERO Of course, it is hard to beat El Bucanero when it comes to a craving for seafood. With three locations, the closest to downtown being off of Bitters Road, El Bucanero has an extensive mouthwatering menu of Pacific Coast-caught seafood and traditional authentic Mexican food. They start your dining experience off perfectly with some tostada shells and a variety of delectable hot sauces. Beware of eating too many of these before your meal arrives. It is difficult to decide what to order because there are just so many dishes to choose from, but I recommend starting out with a plate of bacon-wrapped shrimp and an order of fried oysters—served perfectly crispy with a nice not-to-heavy batter and a plateful of seasoned French fries.

Mi Tierra
The ceviches are the stars here and come in a variety of options, from the Ceviche Verde (shrimp and fish in a green sauce) to Ceviche en Salsa de Mango (fish and shrimp in a mango salsa). With a balanced flavor profile of spicy, sweet and tangy, it is equally refreshing and satisfying!
tortillas covered in black beans, meat of your choice, cabbage, cilantro, onions, salsa, sour cream and cheese, it is a belly buster. Whether hot or cold outside, make sure to order a cup of their Mexican hot chocolate or café de olla. Both are truly delightful!
Make sure to save a little room for dessert because as you leave the restaurant, you will run right into their churro stand. Order the cajetastuffed churro to top it all off. Not to be shared. After one bite, you will see what I mean!
MI TIERRA Finally, if you are looking to celebrate, head to the famous Mi Tierra restaurant, located in festive Market Square. This is a great place to take friends and family for a special occasion because it is always a party at Mi Tierra. With live mariachi entertainment, ginormous margaritas and a panaderia (Mexican bakery), you have it all at your fingertips.
CASCABEL MEXICAN PATIO My absolute favorite hole in the wall for years has been Cascabel Mexican Patio, located in the Southtown Arts District along S. St. Mary’s. With the straw-covered tables on the patio, it feels like you might be on a Mexican beach somewhere tropical, away from it all. Cascabel focuses on interior Mexican cuisine. You will not find any flour tortillas or refried pinto beans here, but they have some of the yummiest homemade corn tortillas and refried black beans, along with a fragrant fideo served before every meal. You can order breakfast all day, and I do. The Huevos Cascabel of two eggs topped with their signature sauce and served with black beans and tortillas is a great way to start any day. The huaraches are another popular menu item. Made with “sandal-shaped”
They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner here and are open at all hours of the day and night. This is a fantastic choice for a late-night meal. My dish of choice is the gooey, cheesy Guacamole Nachos, made with refried beans, cheese and, you guessed it, guacamole. Fajitas for Two, served with beef or chicken fajitas, grilled onions, guacamole, pico de gallo, frijoleas a la charra, Spanish rice and homemade flour tortillas, is another delicious option for sharing. Tidal Surge Swing at Seaworld San Antonio
GA TWISTER
RIPTIDE RACER AND TON
Spring in Texas is, well, practically summer. San Antonio families enjoy so much sunshine and warm weather this time of year that we are ready to get wet and wild on San Antonio’s biggest waterslides and make a splash on our coolest waterpark and theme park rides. It is the time of year when kiddies like to head to parks and playgrounds and enjoy the not-too-hot day of fun in the sun. This year, the waves we make will be all that much bigger with new attractions coming in 2022. SWING SEAWORLD TIDAL SURGE AT SEAWORLD® SAN ANTONIO Little kids love swings, but adults and big kids love to ride in scary huge swings, like the new Tidal Surge ride at SeaWorld San Antonio. Yes, it is a swing-type ride, but it is nothing you will ever see in a backyard. This astounding attraction opens in San Antonio in spring 2022, and it is built to be the biggest of its kind in the world. Featuring two pendulum-like arms, the ride will seat a total of 40 riders. The ride will swing progressively higher and higher, starting slowly 16 RIO Magazine
but then flying faster and higher until riders will reach a staggering height of 135 feet at its peak. Twin dueling arms will alternate sides and sway back-and-forth at 68 miles per hour, creating multiple airtime moments that levitate guests out of their seats with each adrenaline-pumping swing. Riders’ legs will dangle into space as the ride soars over SeaWorld’s Waterski Lake. Being up that high will allow riders to behold beautiful views of the park, all while reaching multiple Negative-G moments before plunging back toward earth. A little scary for me, but my kids will be first in line!
AT AQUATICA® SAN ANTONIO AT SEAWORLD Aquatica San Antonio is a waterpark next to SeaWorld, and here they are adding some new rides to the already wet and wild fun at this exciting resort-style park. Splash and play as if you are seaside at this tropical paradise that already offers water rides from serene to extreme, crashing surf and unforgettable opportunities to meet stingrays, tropical birds and other amazing animals. Soar up a threestory-high wall on Walhalla Wave, or simply relax and soak up the sun on white sand beaches. But then get ready for some new exciting competitive fun. The new Riptide Racer ride is coming to Aquatica San Antonio in spring 2022. Here families can slide into excitement with the opening of this fun and splashy dueling racer. This fantastic new heart-stopping waterslide will let teams compete against one another in a splash to the finish line of the ride. Guests can challenge friends and family members to see which team first feels the rush of watery victory. It begins thesanantonioriverwalk.com
atop a 51-foot tower, where riders grab a two-person raft before racing through 565-feet of water slides with low walls while watching their opponents. “It’s a dash to the splash,” say folks at Aquatica, as teams compete in this side-by-side raft run through high-speed tunnels, twists and turns. Racing through each turn in a down-to-the-wire finish, this fastpaced, high-speed adventure is one to experience over and over. Another fun new ride is the Tonga Twister at Aquatica San Antonio. But the new dive coaster, Dr. Diabolical’s Cliffhanger, coming by summer, is going to be the biggest new attraction of all. Not for the faint of heart, this steep and deeply frightening roller-coaster-type ride has three 21-passenger trains to lift riders 150 feet in the air, then lock them in a face-first cliffhanger hold just before dropping riders down a 95-degree, beyond-vertical, plummet at 60 miles per hour. AT SIX FLAGS® FIESTA TEXAS The world’s steepest dive rollercoaster is set to open at Six Flags Fiesta Texas in time for the park’s anniversary this summer. Before the ride opens though, this spring the park will celebrate its 30th Anniversary Festival, April 2 through thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Once you are exposed to this menacing machine, you shall live forever in FEAR, say the folks at Six Flags Fiesta Texas. The new coaster will be set in the park’s Crackaxle Canyon Screampunk District and its thrill level is set at “MAXIMUM!”
Morgan’s Wonderland will reopen at 10:00am on March 4 for the 2022 season. Fun features include a butterfly playground, a park train, a merry-go-round, a Pirates Island playground, a music garden and more, and this year, Morgan’s Wonderland has added a new element—Exploration Station—to its popular Sensory Village, a collection of storefronts with interactive activities that engage the senses. “Sensory Village enables guests to create their own pace of play and self-select which areas they want to explore,” says Jessica Lizardo, Morgan’s Wonderland general manager. “Popular elements include KMWL-TV, where guests can create their own simulated TV weathercasts; the Village Market, a supermarket for makebelieve shopping; and the The Microsoft Experience, offering adaptable Xbox and accessible-play technology. Exploration Station now adds new elements to Sensory Village such as the Sand Table, the Selfie Wall and Draw Alive to amp up the fun.” At the Sand Table, guests dig out and pile up sand, while an interactive sensor detects the changes made to the sand, and a projection adjusts accordingly in real time. Augmented-reality layers make mountains, plains and bodies of water, teaching guests about topography and different environments. Animals and objects react to the changes and roam where they are found in their natural habitats. The Selfie Wall enables guests to photograph themselves using a touchscreen kiosk and take their selfies to another world using augmented reality. For example, a guest can see his or her face on an astronaut in space or on a scuba diver in the middle of the ocean. RIO Magazine

CONTEMPORARY ART MONTH (CAM) Celebrating the arts in the month of March would not be complete without a little help from this nonprofit organization that provides a platform for local artist communities to share event information on its website calendar. CAM will host its own annual event, the 2022 CAM Perennial Exhibition, from March 5 to April 6 at Southwest School of Art in downtown San Antonio, and March 10 to April 20 at Sala Diaz, an experimental contemporary art space located in Southtown. The work from 17 San Antonio-based artists will be featured. The event this year will feature guest curator Lauren Cross, an interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker based in North Texas. Cross’ work has been screened and exhibited across the country. A passionate advocate for diversity in the arts, her feature film, “The Skin Quilt Project,” was an official selection for the 2010 International Black Women’s Film Festival in Berkeley, CA. Cross is also a 2013 recipient of the Fort Worth Weekly Visionary Awards. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL A new public artwork, created by Valence Group partners Robert Amerman, Richard Tobin II and Alexander Hilmy as a gift to the patrons and visitors of San Antonio, was recently unveiled at the intersection of 1221 Broadway and Roy Smith Street. Visible at high speed from Hwy. 281, as well as by pedestrians and pedalers, “the public art serves as a reminder of the importance of focusing on our individuality, our appreciation of others, and the beauty that brings us all together.” YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL is made possible through a partnership with the Valance Group, San Antonio River Foundation, Area Real Estate and US Signs. MAJESTIC THEATRE Tootsie! (March 1-6): Rolling Stone called it “musical comedy heaven.” But you can just call it TOOTSIE! This gender bending, Tony Award-winning musical based on the 1982 Dustin Hoffman comedy about a talented but difficult actor who, struggling to find work, dresses as a woman to land a life-changing role, features a laughout-loud book and musical score packed with hilarious punchlines.

Chicago (March 10): The famed rock and roll group with the signature horn section that was the first American band to have an album in the Top 40 Billboard charts for six consecutive decades is coming to the Majestic to perform the hits that have proved the secret to Chicago’s musical longevity. Classic tunes like “25 or 6 to 4,” “Saturday in the Park” and many others during this tour-de-force show are concert favorites. 2022 marks the band’s 55th consecutive year of touring! The Temptations & The Four Tops (March 11): Get ready, ‘cuz here they come! The Temps and the Tops, two legendary Motown groups, will sing, dance and sway their way into your heart with some old school soul that will have you singing along and reminiscing for one night only. As iconic groups that helped to solidify the Motown sound of the 1960s, The Temptations and the Four Tops are both Rock Colbie Caillat and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. And with hits like “My Girl,” “Baby I Need Your Loving,” “The Way You Do the Things You Do” and “Reach Out (I’ll Be There),” this show is sure to be more than the same old song. Jose Maria Napoleon (March 12): Known in his home country of Mexico and throughout Latin America as the “Poet of Song,” this award-winning singer, songwriter and actor is revered as one of the key influencers of the symphonic or “balada” movement of the 1970s, delicately layering orchestral arrangements with elements of traditional styles, from mariachi to rancheras to boleros. Audiences will be enthralled as Napoleon employs sophisticated orchestral and rock charts coupled with beautiful melodies. Bob Dylan: “Rough and Rowdy Ways” Tour (March 13-14): The iconic “Like a Rolling Stone’’ singer-songwriter is bringing his rough and rowdy ways to the Alamo City with a world tour of the same name that will make a twonight stop at the Majestic. But at least 24 seasons of love have passed, and the touring company of the hit show will–it would seem–be hanging up its dancing shoes. Fortunately, there will be one last season to catch the love during the show’s two-day run at the Majestic. Don’t miss it! Willie Nelson & Family (March 21-22): The red-headed stranger is on the road again! Armed with his signature braids, bandana and well-worn guitar, the author of classic Country hits like “Crazy,” “Whiskey River” and “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” will perform at the Majestic. Landing the perfect find, the gift sure to please or a statement piece guaranteed to draw ooohs and ahhhs? That might sound like a tall order, but there is a surefire way to score all of the above: shop a museum. The cherry on top of the art, history and fun you can enjoy at San Antonio museums is shopping. If you think museum shopping is just souvenir trinkets, think again. Unique finds unlike anything you will see in regular shops await, making museums a secret weapon for shoppers. We are not advocating that you try to acquire something from a museum collection, but you can score museum-worthy finds at museum gift shops across San Antonio. And even better: every purchase supports these amazing institutions, so shop away and do some good! Nestled under the enormous branches of the oaks that shade the grounds, the Alamo gift shop gives new meaning to “Remember the Alamo!” From a shopping perspective, the gift shop offers unique Texas finds, including an array of books on the sacred ground known as the “Shrine to Texas Liberty.” From historical accounts to Texas cookbooks—and sauces and rubs to add Texas flavor—the Alamo offers wonderful options. Alamo socks, dishes and décor are also fun finds and who can resist a coonskin cap? But the best present any Texan could ask for would be a flag flown over the Alamo. Buy a flag, choose a special day to fly it over the Alamo and receive a personalized certificate of authenticity with the name of the lucky recipient and the date the flag was flown. Just a few blocks away, let your shopping take you west, as in the real West featured at the Briscoe Western Art Museum. The Briscoe’s museum store features a curated selection of jewelry, home décor, books, ornaments, children’s toys and games, pottery and more, including original artwork and prints, all tucked away in the Briscoe’s beautifully restored 1930s building. Handmade Western soaps include a “Blazing Saddles” scent (leather, gunpowder, sandalwood and sage, lest fans of the movie fear it is the campfire scene) and Fire in the Hole (campfire, gunpowder and whiskey). Handcrafted silver jewelry from thesanantonioriverwalk.com
Witte Bolner Family Store
Native American artist Tim Blueflint includes statement pieces you will treasure for years, while scarves and accessories provide stylish Western flair. And for the whiskey lover, handcrafted candles inspired by tasting notes of bourbon and whiskey are a must. For more museum-worthy finds, stroll the River Walk to the San Antonio Museum of Art, or SAMA as it abbreviates itself. The Shop at SAMA mirrors the museum’s collection, with globally-inspired treasures. A wide selection of goods from unique books, cards and gifts to stunning (and affordable!) jewelry await. By the way, like all of the wonderful museums in San Antonio, you do not have to pay admission to enjoy shopping at the San Antonio Museum of Art. It is always free to shop and of course, anything you purchase can be shipped as well. Whimsical alebrijes, flocked longhorn skulls and Frida Kahlo pottery combine modern and classic, while the dog butt magnet set inspires laughter. And do not miss picking up your own San Antonio Monopoly game. SAMA offers the game, as does the Alamo and the Witte Museum, and all of San Antonio’s museums are featured on the board. Following the river, head north to the Witte Museum, where the Bolner Family Museum Store is a magnet for kids of all ages. Away from the river but known for its beautiful landscape dotted with art, the McNay Art Museum never disappoints and that includes its wonderful shop. Texas pride is more than a slogan—it is the spirit of the state and its residents, whether they were born here, or just “got here as fast as they could.” This fierce independence once sparked a revolution and a republic. Texas history is the stuff of legends, and its stories are preserved in many places across the state. 28 RIO Magazine

Come and take it.
San Jacinto
March is a great time to visit San Antonio, and not just for the balmy spring weather and the River Walk. March 2 is Texas Independence Day, an official state holiday. On that date 186 years ago, the Republic of Texas was born. Did you know that Texas was “a whole other country” to the south of the United States, with its own Constitution, elected leadership and laws for a decade before it joined the Union? Fun fact: that is why in Texas, U.S. law gives us the right to fly the Lone Star flag of the state at the same height as the United States’ starspangled banner.
Gonzales Re-enactors
The Alamo
The Texas Historical Commission’s Independence Trail maps out the places where the history of the Republic of Texas was forged and where the legendary moments are still recalled, honored and re-enacted. They are all at most a day trip away from San Antonio, in places well worth a longer stay. Today, revisionist historians debate the causes and characters of the Texas Revolution, but the stories are woven deep into the spirit of the Lone Star State. THE ALAMO AND CONCEPCIÓN The Alamo is the holy grail of Texas heritage, and by far the most famous battle of Texas’ War of Independence against Mexico. On March 6, 1836, more than 2,000 Mexican soldiers under General Santa Anna’s command overran the Alamo after a 13-day siege. Between 182 and 257 Texian and Tejano defenders, including Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie and William Travis, were killed outright or taken prisoner and executed. This month, Alamo history comes alive with several memorial events featuring solemn ceremonies and costumed reenactors. March 6, “Dawn at the Alamo” is a special treat for early risers. Around the corner from the Alamo, the AMC IMAX Theatre in the Shops at Rivercenter features “Alamo: The Price of Freedom” with daily shows. For Alamo newcomers, it is a great introduction to the heroic saga that took place in here. And further down San Antonio’s Mission Trail, visit Mission Concepción, now part of the Spanish Missions UNESCO World Heritage site. It is known as the Lexington of Texas, where a band of Texian rebels won a skirmish with Santa Anna’s men in the first major conflict of the Texas Revolution.

GONZALES: COME AND TAKE IT It was not a battle, but the first shot of the Texas Revolution was fired in the little town of Gonzales, about an hour’s drive east of San Antonio. In October 1835, as full-scale war approached, a small Mexican force was dispatched to Gonzales to reclaim a cannon that had been given to the settlers to defend against marauding Indians. The defiant town leaders refused. They made a flag showing a cannon, a star and the slogan “Come and Take It.” They fired the cannon to make their point, and won the day. The famous “Come and Take It” flag has seen increased use for various causes in recent years—now you know where it started. Gonzales is also famous for sending 32 young volunteers to help defend the Alamo in the fort’s last days. All died in the battle. Don’t miss the Gonzales Memorial Museum, a beautiful Art Deco complex featuring the original “Come and Take It” cannon and many exhibits and murals illustrating Texas history and daily life. GOLIAD, FANNIN BATTLEGROUND AND FORT DEFIANCE Near the town of Goliad, southeast of San Antonio, Colonel James Fannin and his men made a stand in an old Spanish fort called Presidio La Bahia, which Fannin re-named Fort Defiance. Three weeks after the fall of the Alamo, Fannin’s outnumbered, outgunned troops surrendered to the Mexican army. Some 350 Texians were executed in cold blood at Santa Anna’s orders. Today the Presidio is operated by the Catholic Church—you can even arrange to stay a night in the old priests’ quarters. Then visit the nearby Fannin
Battleground State Historic Site where Fannin and his men were captured, and a nearby memorial that marks the mass grave of the martyred rebels. SAN JACINTO BATTLEGROUND In April 1836, General Sam Houston and his men decisively defeated Santa Anna’s armies at this battlefield near Houston, shouting “Remember the Alamo” and “Remember Goliad.” The fight lasted just 18 minutes, and when the smoke cleared and Santa Anna surrendered, Texas was free. Today, at the 1,300-acre site, the San Jacinto Museum of History and the 567-foot-tall San Jacinto Monument draw nearly 250,000 visitors a year. WASHINGTON-ON-THE-BRAZOS This historic site is called “Where Texas Became Texas.” On March 2, 1836, 59 delegates adopted the Texas Declaration of Independence. The little town with the big name was the national capital of Texas from 1842 to 1845. The small, humble Independence Hall, the modern Star of the Republic Museum and the restored Barrington Plantation offer a full schedule of events and programs to visitors. The founding fathers of Texas hammered out a constitution for the new republic here—an independent nation that ruled itself from 1836 to 1846, when Texas joined the United States. But the Texas spirit of independence still reigns today.

Time is a Great Storyteller A fixture on the San Antonio River Walk for nearly 50 years, Durty Nelly’s is well known for its raucous nightly sing-alongs and great pub grub.
Durty Nelly’s Irish Pub is a replica of the original Durty Nelly’s in Ireland, dating back to 1620, as part of the Bunratty Castle in Limerick, County Clare. It has been part of the landscape at Bunratty for almost 400 years, and today continues to be the “favourite ‘watering hole’ of both locals and visitors alike.” The concept of the San Antonio location came from Bill Hunter, general manager of Hilton Palacio del Rio in the 1970s. After visiting the iconic bar in Ireland, he returned to the Alamo City to convince Bartell Zachry (previous CEO of Zachry Construction Company and builder/owner of Hilton Palacio del Rio) to build an identical pub on a seldom used corner of the hotel. The pub is designed in the tradition of the European style with two fireplaces, slate floors, warm woods and stone walls, and from the time its doors first opened on September 11, 1974 to present day, this corner is a hot spot on the San Antonio River Walk. Since then, Durty Nelly’s has hosted a large extended family of regular customers and many do not even live in San Antonio. They come from all over the country and beyond, and when they return to visit San Antonio, they come back to “their bar,” Durty Nelly’s. Piano entertainers are charged with getting the party started and their
enjoyment of the gig is contagious. Their pleasure is making guests laugh and using their musical talent to connect with people from all over the world. Pop in nightly, from 4:00pm to midnight and until 1:00am on Fridays—and 12:00pm to 12:00am on St. Patty’s Day! As one of the best venues for singing along, the catalogue of tunes that guests can request from is staggering. The architecture and atmosphere are not all that was replicated from across the pond. Durty Nelly’s menu includes classics like Ham and Potato Cheddar Ale and Fish & Chips, and American staples with an Irish twist such as the Durty Dog topped with corned beef and Irish cheddar and fried donuts glazed with Bailey’s Irish Cream. Wash it down with Guinness Stout on draft,
along with four other brews from the homeland and half a dozen from right here in the Lone Star state. Durty Nelly’s may be the closest thing to a genuine Irish experience anywhere on the River Walk. So, “give it a lash!” Enjoy a pint and some peanuts while singing along with world-class piano entertainment. The rules are simple and few at Durty Nelly’s: Only two to a stool, no talk of religion or politics and those drinking rum may stand by themselves, preferably near the window. And no wee ones under 21 allowed after 7:00pm. Slàinte! mwww. DurtyNellysPub.com

Thousands of years ago, the Payaya people lived along the creek, and the Spanish later settled here because they recognized the creek’s potential to support a large city. However, as the city developed, the habitat and history of the creek began to disappear. Taking the Initiative
When unique Morgan’s Wonderland theme park opened in 2010, creators Maggie and Gordon Hartman didn’t know what to expect. No one had ever designed a theme park with those with special needs in mind and built such
an oasis of family fun for everyone. Yet they took the initiative to fashion one of the world’s great recreational places. Now, more than a decade later, non-profit Morgan’s Wonderland is launching a new season promising more to do in 2022. The fun, which begins March 4 at the colorful, 25-acre showplace in Northeast San Antonio, will continue daily during spring break that extends through Sunday, March 13. The latest information on operating days and hours of operation, admissions and special events can be found at www. MorgansWonderland.com or at (210) 495-5888. Spring break at Morgan’s Wonderland will mark a new edition of highly popular “Music, Mutts, Magic and More,” special entertainment that is free with park admission, March 7-12, says Jessica Lizardo, Morgan’s Wonderland CEO. Included will be musical performances, exhibitions by acrobatic dogs, feats of magic and appearances by the park’s mascot, Joy the Butterfly. “Music, Mutts, Magic and More” will be presented in addition to more than 25 Morgan’s Wonderland attractions such as wheelchair-accessible rides, playscapes and other enjoyable elements. Park guests can also visit new Exploration Station at Sensory Village, a collection of storefronts with interactive activities that engage the senses. Exploration Station now includes the Sand Table, the Selfie Wall and Draw Alive to amp up the fun.
“Since Morgan’s Wonderland opened in spring 2010, the park has welcomed approximately 2 million guests from all 50 states and more than 100 other countries,” Lizardo notes. “And we’ve continued to admit anyone and everyone with a special need free of charge.”
Morgan’s Wonderland is located at 5223 David Edwards Drive in Northeast San Antonio, a halfmile west of IH 35 at the intersection of Wurzbach Parkway and Thousand Oaks Drive. It is only a 15-minute drive from downtown San Antonio, and the park offers free parking. Because of its phenomenal success, Morgan’s Wonderland sparked creation of non-profit Morgan’s Inclusion Initiative, the umbrella organization that now coordinates planning, fundraising and communications for the Morgan’s Wonderland “family” of Ultra-Accessible™, fully-inclusive endeavors. These include world-renowned Morgan’s Wonderland, awardwinning Morgan’s Inspiration Island splash park (that opens for the summer season in May), Morgan’s Wonderland Sports Complex, new Morgan’s Wonderland Camp (that is open year-round) and projects in progress such as the Multi-Assistance Center at Morgan’s Wonderland, or The MAC, scheduled to open later this year. Morgan’s Inclusion Initiative is also one of the key contributors to San Antonio’s growing reputation as “Inclusion City, USA.” For more information, visit www.InclusionStartsHere.com. The Hartmans credit daughter Morgan, who has dealt with cognitive and physical special needs since birth, as the inspiration for their passion and generosity in helping the special-needs community. It was Morgan’s cando spirit and positive outlook that led them to take the initiative.

THE RIVER SHANNON The river was recently drained and cleaned, and now she is ready to go green. The historic San Antonio River is getting an eco-friendly dye job this month for its annual transformation into the River Shannon. This St. Patrick’s Day tradition takes place March 17 and 19, so grab your spot along the riverbank and listen to the bagpipes play as the river is transformed into an emerald stream. Once the transformation is complete, book passage on a Go Rio Cruise to experience the St. Patty’s floating magic firsthand. Or if you cannot join us in person, tune in live each day for an @thesanantonioriverwalk Facebook broadcast of the festivities.

River Walk
DAY ONE - LOVE AND MARGS
St. Patrick's Day River Walk Parade
GUAC AND GAWK One of the best spots to watch the festivities is a riverside table at Boudro’s Texas Bistro on the River. In between floats, order a round of their infamous green tableside guacamole to stay in the spirit. And wash it down with a limey margarita.

FLOAT YOUR BOAT The weekend celebration is in full swing with the St. Patrick’s Day River Walk festival and parade, and includes a second river dyeing and parade along the Museum Reach extension of the River Walk. Check out the artisan show, live entertainment and the 12 Irish-themed floats that light up the river. There is also a Tater Tot eating contest on the 18th, where contestants will have three minutes to wolf down two pounds of tots. And on Saturday do not miss the parade of pooches and the crowning of the Lucky Dog.
BEER ME Stop for a nightcap at Maddy McMurphy’s Irish Sports Pub with green beer on tap, green margaritas by the glass and a whole host of drink specials at happy hour that will have you feeling pretty lucky by the end of the night. thesanantonioriverwalk.com

We are not sure if it is jealousy, environmental passion or just plain luck o’ the Irish, but this month has us going green in River City. We kick off the month with the green, gold and purple hues of Mardi Gras, then we are floating down the river on a trail of green St. Patrick’s Day festivities. It is a very verde month of indoor and outdoor fun in downtown San Antonio! San Antonio Zoo

DAY TWO - TWIST OF LIME
Green Vegetarian Cuisine
HIP HOP STOP Hop on over to the San Antonio Zoo for an amphibious adventure with some little green friends. The zoo is home to a really great selection of green lizards, turtles and snakes in the reptile house. But the little hippity hoppers at the amphibian exhibit have stolen our hearts. Take a selfie with a splendid tree frog or one of the other 10 species at the zoo. EATIN’ GREEN Bring your appetite because we are eating good at Green Vegetarian Cuisine at Alamo Quarry Market. This is not your mama’s veggie tray, with robust protein bowls, meat-free chicken fried steak and the best cauliflower wings around. You can grab a rainbow of options at Green, so come hungry.
thesanantonioriverwalk.com
ON THE GREEN See if you can rule the green with a round of golf at Brackenridge Park. Tee off with 18 holes on Old Brack and spend the day at the new site of the Texas Golf Hall of Fame. If you are not a PGA champ, opt for a stroll around the park’s walking trails. There is still plenty of green space and room to putter around without slinging clubs or dodging sand traps. MARDI GRAS This month kicks off with Mardi Gras on the first. But you can have that green, gold and purple Bourbon Street magic any day of the week with the new gang at Fat Tuesday at the Shops at Rivercenter. Wander along the River Walk with a whalebone and laissez les bon temps rouler!

DAY THREE - SALT OR SUGAR? PUTTING GREEN Traveling with kids today? Then Green Acres Golf and Games is the place to be. Take the family out for an afternoon of putt putt, paintball and go karting, and make sure to get a ticket for the Trampoline Thing. Green Acres also has a snack bar with tasty treats. ICE GREEN Chill out this afternoon with a treat from Justin’s Ice Cream. This River Walk staple beckons with handmade desserts, coffee, hot chocolate and of course stacked cones of creamy bliss. The ice cream options vary from time to time, but even if they are fresh out of pistachio or mint chocolate chip, you can still get down with a variety of flavors to choose from.
A BIT O’ LUCK Pull up a seat at the bar, and feast on some corned beef and cabbage at Waxy O’Connor’s. This jaunty Irish pub sits along the San Antonio River Walk, and it has been known to host a few celebrity patrons from time to time. Toast to the luck of the Irish at Waxy’s with a pint or a shot of Jameson, and feel free to bring your furry friends down for an evening on the dog-friendly patio.
