ON THE COVER Since explorer Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca wrote about the river in 1536, to 1939 when the River Walk project designed by architect Robert H. H. Hugman broke ground, to now, the River Walk has been a continuous resource for the citizens and visitors of San Antonio. Whether strolling the banks or cruising the waters, delicious food and entertainment are at every turn. The Stella Artois Drift & Dine returns this month and brings the opportunity to ride on a barge while sampling delicious dishes from many River Walk restaurants. Photo by Al Rendon. EDITOR’S LETTER APPETITE, ART & ADVENTURE! Before we know it, school will be out and summer in San Antonio will be in full force. It is certainly a sensational and action-packed season, but May in San Antonio is the perfect time to wander. And we have just the itinerary to satisfy your appetite, appreciation of the arts and lust for adventure. May begins with the Stella Artois Drift & Dine. During this annual event, you are cruising with cuisine. Spanning three evenings, this culinary event provides a unique opportunity to sample six of the River Walk’s fabulous restaurants while riding along the river on a colorful barge. The restaurant line-up is different each day, should you choose to partake more than once, and it is a festive celebration of everything wonderful about the San Antonio River Walk. While rambling on the River Walk, keep an eye out for all of the art installations. They are scattered along the banks and around every corner. San Antonio has a thriving art scene with many long-standing projects and new initiatives, at both river and streets levels and spread throughout downtown. Organizations like the City of San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture promote all mediums including public and visual arts, music, culinary and cultural arts. Centro San Antonio’s campaign is “Art Everywhere,” and San Antonio Street Art Initiative is building the “Largest Outdoor Gallery in Texas™” with 63 murals completed already. One particular endeavor is to preserve the historic San José tile murals–there are three along the River Walk and others nearby. Read on and begin your hunt! That covers appetite and art—now for adventure! We will start with airplanes. San Antonio is nicknamed Military City USA and May is Military Appreciation Month. You can tour military planes from different periods at Lackland Air Force Base, honor those who have served at Veteran’s Memorial Plaza, then check out other bases, each with their own fun facts. We also have biking, kayaking and walking tours to get in a little exercise while learning about history, culture, flora and fauna. Enjoy!

What is more fun than taking a boat tour along the lush serpentine San Antonio River Walk? Enjoying excellent food and drink while cruising the river! At the Stella Artois Drift & Dine event, May 3-5, guests can feast on dishes from a variety of River Walk restaurants on each of the three evenings. For other dining opportunities throughout the year, groups can reserve a special Dinner Cruise from an individual restaurant. The array of exceptional River Walk restaurants abound! THE STELLA ARTOIS DRIFT & DINE Coming up on May 3–5, Drift & Dine is a unique multi-day event which allows you to experience several restaurants at once, unlike most barge dining, which typically features only one restaurant per event. This tour allows you to discover established and new restaurants as you make multiple stops along the river. Luxuriate in the sunset as you float along and stop to sample a variety of flavors. Each beautifully decorated barge carries up to 20 people, so bring along your friends and family for this extraordinary culinary extravaganza. A multitude of River Walk restaurants will be participating, including favorites such as BierGarten, Little Rhein Prost Haus, County Line, Paesanos Riverwalk, Mad Dogs, Boudro’s, LandShark, Fogo de Chao, On the Bend, Zocca and Hard Rock Café. The Kick-Off Party (checkin) takes place each evening from 5:00 to 6:00pm at the International Center on the River Level, where you will find live music, drinks and a complimentary photo booth for those IG selfies to commemorate your special night! DINNER CRUISES Go RioTM is the dedicated tour company offering narrated River Walk boat tours, including dinner cruises. You can book your group directly through their website. However, some restaurants prefer you book directly through them. Acenar, a contemporary Mexican restaurant located next to the Valencia Hotel along Houston Street, is a popular choice for a private dining cruise that includes a three-course dinner with soup/salad, appetizers, entrée options such as fajitas and dessert. When making arrangements, guests choose from a list of menu items. The cruise also comes with an unlimited barge bar that serves margaritas, house wines and beer. Just make sure

not to fall in the river after too many margaritas! On the Bend is an upscale yet relaxed seafood restaurant that also boasts a cigar lounge. Now, I suspect you will not be able to indulge in cigars on a dinner cruise, but you can bet you will whet your whistle on some fabulous cocktails and the freshest seafood. Known for their Raw Bar that features succulent shrimp cocktail, gulf oysters on the half shell, Oysters Rockefeller and peel and eat shrimp by the pound as well as a variety of appetizers, sandwiches like the Blackened Ahi Tuna and entrees like their fall-offthe-bone Wagyu Beef Short Ribs, be prepared for a floating feast!

Biga on the Banks

Also note that their sister restaurants, Little Rhein Prost Haus (a German restaurant located in an historic building in La Villita) and Mad Dogs British Pub (a great place to dive into a little revelry), also offer curated private dinner tours.

For fine dining, Biga on the Banks is an unparalleled choice. Located on S. St. Mary’s with a balcony view overlooking the River Walk, Biga has a reputation for their superb New American cuisine that is always prepared to perfection. Chef Auden’s restaurant menu changes daily based on what is in season and the chef’s own inspiration, but I would wager you will enjoy one of the best meals of your life here. It is the place to go if you are celebrating a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary. From Pan-Seared Scallops and Gulf Shrimp to Mustard-Crusted Roasted Australian Lamb Rack, not to mention their renowned Sticky Toffee Pudding, everything coming out of this kitchen is

PROUD TO SERVE Home to nearly 250,000 veterans, the largest and most diverse joint base in the Department of Defense, Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA), is comprised of four primary locations: Lackland Air Force Base, Randolph Air Force Base, Fort Sam Houston and Camp Bullis’ positive impact on this city and this nation is enormous. It employs nearly 80,000 active-military duty personnel and hosts more than 130,000 military students in San Antonio each year. The Department of Defense is one of the top employers in the city, and as many as 85 percent of those enlisted in the military and their families live in town rather than on base. It is also estimated that 250,000 San Antonio residents retired here or stayed after completing their military service.

FAMOUS VETERANS Your kids may not know that a lot of really famous people have been stationed in San Antonio over the years, including Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, General George McArthur and pro-wrestling champ Shawn Michael—just to name a few! Even pioneers of aviation Wilbur and Orville Wright have an SA connection: Army Lieutenant Benjamin Foulois worked with the Wright Brothers and had flown Orville Wright cross-country before he re-located to San Antonio. Lt. Foulois made history when he piloted the Army’s first aircraft over Fort Sam Houston in 1910. Irene Trowell-Harris was the first Black woman to achieve the rank of American Major General in the U.S. National Guard. She served in the flight nurse branch of the Aerospace School of Medicine in San Antonio. thesanantonioriverwalk.com

HOW MANY VISITORS TO SAN ANTONIO KNOW THAT THE CITY’S NICKNAME IS “MILITARY CITY USA?” PERHAPS IT IS TIME THEY LEARNED ABOUT THE Alamo tomb

PROUD, BRAVE MILITARY COMMUNITY THAT CALLS SAN ANTONIO HOME DURING MILITARY APPRECIATION MONTH. GET GOING So, where to take the kids to learn more about the important contributions of San Antonio military members dating back from the Alamo to today?

Airforce canine Alamo

Alamo Cenotaph – The “Spirit of Sacrifice,” as it is called, is a grey Georgia marble and pink granite monument standing in Alamo Plaza downtown commemorating the Battle of the Alamo of the Texas Revolution, fought on this spot within the walls of the original Alamo mission. The monument was erected in celebration of the centennial anniversary of the battle and bears the names of those known to have fought on the Texas side in March 1836. Their sacrifice carried the cry, “Remember the Alamo!” across the land, charging Texians to defeat the Mexican Army under General Antonio López de Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto, which they did on April 21, 1836. San Fernando Cathedral – This glorious cathedral at Main Plaza is home to a marble coffin held in the narthex at the left entrance. Its contents are a hotly-contested mystery: Is it true that this coffin in fact holds a box containing partial remains of Alamo defenders William B. Travis, James Bowie and David Crockett? Many historians believe that is not possible; however, it is worth taking a look and talking it over or, better yet, researching the debate online before you go. Visit in the evening, and perhaps the kids will get to see San Antonio, the Saga—a stunning light show projected on the walls of the cathedral, set to music, depicting the history of the city. The show happens every Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening year-round, rain or shine, with three showings at 9:00, 9:30 and 10:00pm. The show lasts 24 minutes and is free to attend.

Veterans Memorial Plaza – Take the kids to see the heart-breaking monuments and statues at Veterans Memorial Plaza, dedicated to the memory and sacrifices of those who served in our nation’s armed forces. The Plaza stands at the entrance to the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. The San Antonio Municipal Auditorium, which once stood on this spot, was created as a memorial to American soldiers killed in World War I. Today, it holds the War Mothers Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Medal of Honor River Portal monument. Veterans Memorial Plaza is designated as a central city location for the placement of military-oriented memorials, wreaths, plaques and statues and is considered “hallowed ground” for military ceremonies. Lackland Air Force Base Parade Grounds – Kids interested in old aircrafts will enjoy visiting Lackland Air Force Base where an open-air display stands on the parade field, showcasing many preserved historic military airplanes from different periods, including A-26 Invaders, a B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberators, a B-25 Mitchell, a B-29 Superfortress and a Douglas C-47 Skytrain. When aviators finish basic training, the parade grounds are the site of their graduation. Bricks with names of fallen aviators have been lain on this site as well. While at Lackland, visit the USAF Airman Heritage Museum & Enlisted Character Development Center dedicated to the U.S. military aviators throughout the years. The museum offers learning opportunities including airpark tours, gallery tours and other educational tours and lectures. RIO Magazine

Randolph AFB - Taj Mahal

Randolph Air Force Base “Taj Mahal” – For those visiting or living near Universal City and want to impress the kids with a cool military base building they can see from a distance, show them the Administration Building standing at the heart of Randolph Air Force Base, often called the Randolph Taj Mahal, or simply the Taj, for its architecturally arresting silhouette against the sky. The Administration Building is headquarters for the 12th Flying Training Wing. Brooks City Base

18 RIO Magazine

Brooks City Base – Brooks Air Force Base, a United States Air Force facility, closed on September 30, 2011. However, in 2002 Brooks Air Force Base was renamed Brooks City-Base when the property became part of a redevelopment project to reopen as a science, business and technology center. While exciting new things are

happening here, including the coming of restaurant, retail and entertainment options, kids should know that Brooks Air Force Base was one of 32 U.S. Army Air Service training camps established in 1918 after our entry into World War I. It was first established on December 8, 1917 as Kelly Field No. 5. More importantly, flying at Brooks predates its being a military base, as the facility was known as Gosport Field first. Tests on the original astronaut suits and studies in aerospace medicine are also part of Brooks’ long and proud San Antonio history. On with the SHOWS! By Lakendra Lewis

Summer is fast approaching, and while that normally signals the beginning of the summer blockbusters, local lovers of the arts will be happy to know the play is also still the thing. San Antonio local theatre is in full swing this month with a variety of live musicals and plays offered by a number of prestigious venues, from the improvisational to the historical.

PUBLIC THEATER OF SAN ANTONIO She Loves Me (May 20-June12) – Meet Amalia and Georg, two squabbling shop clerks who work in a European perfumery during the 1930s. When both answer a lonely-hearts ad, sparks start to fly as the two workers start to receive and exchange love letters from unknown secret admirers. Mischief, of course, ensues as the desire for each to uncover the identities of their new loves sets in motion a musical journey of twists and turns you will not want to miss. Featuring music by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof) and book by Joe Masteroff (Cabaret), She Loves Me is an intimate and touching production that has been nominated for numerous accolades, including five Tony Awards in 1964, an Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical, just to name a few. The show was an inspiration for the classic 1993 romantic comedy “You’ve Got Mail” starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan and boasts a range of characters audiences will love. Standard show tickets are $45; $30 for military, students and seniors; and $15 for children under age 12. Formerly known as the San Pedro Playhouse, the Public Theater is dedicated to producing high quality theatrical productions year-round in multiple venues

that has garnered the organization a reputation as one of San Antonio’s premier venues for professional theatre. CLASSIC THEATRE OF SAN ANTONIO Misalliance (May 12-29) – The intrigue of this timeless play penned by George Bernard Shaw takes place at a country estate in Edwardian England where a seemingly typical garden party becomes the setting for love, sex, marriage and death embodied in Shaw’s witty writing style. At the center of the play, which originally debuted in 1910, is Hypatia, the daughter of a self-made underwear mogul who is bored with the stuffy attitudes of the aristocracy. But things take a lively turn when an airplane suddenly crashes into the family estate, bringing new and attractive characters into the fray. Audiences will laugh out loud as the battle of the sexes gets turned on its ear in this fun, fast-paced show.

MAGIK THEATRE Junie B. Jones: Toothless Wonder (May 6 – June 12) – Uh-oh… one of Junie B. Jones’ top front teeth is loose and she is not happy about it. What if she looks like toothless Uncle Lou? And what is with all this tooth fairy business? Plus, that meanie Jim in Room Nine at school invited everybody to his birthday party on Saturday except her, and now Junie B. is wondering should she have her own birthday party six months early and not invite Jim? Or should she move to “It’s a Small World After All” in Disneyland? Treasures San Antonio Museum of Art

San Antonio is rich in tiles. The clay used by indigenous peoples for simple pottery is ideal material for skilled potters, and rich limestone deposits produced cement for decorative concrete tiles that add style and color to homes and other buildings. Today you will find beautiful tile installations and murals scattered all over the city, some large and striking, like Juan O’Gorman’s famous “Confluence of Civilizations” mural on the face of the Convention Center; others small and easy to miss. artistic tiles, plates and bowls, mostly as inexpensive San Antonio souvenirs. One of her early hires would prove her best.

Among all the tile creations, from single painted tiles to massive murals, one type of tile stands out—San José tiles, named for Mission San José, part of the San Antonio Missions UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, a single certified San José tile can sell for hundreds of dollars, and a table with a tile mural top can easily bring $25,000, according to Susan Toomey Frost, author of Colors On Clay: The San José Tile Workshops of San Antonio. Frost’s book, and the story of San José tiles, offer a fascinating look at the people and the culture of San Antonio. ETHEL WILSON HARRIS Start with a smart, determined woman—Ethel Wilson Harris. Born in 1893 to a Texas family with construction and lumber interests, Harris was an energetic entrepreneur with a mission—to keep the folk arts and crafts of Mexico flourishing. In the 1920s, when most of her peers were building families, she opened her own construction business in an abandoned stone barn on the banks of the San Antonio River near downtown. She called it Mexican Arts and Crafts. Harris hired local artisans to design and make thesanantonioriverwalk.com

FERNANDO RAMOS Fernando Ramos was born to well-to-do parents in Mexico City who emigrated to San Antonio in the early 1920s to escape the chaos of the Mexican Revolution. Fernando’s artistic talent got attention quickly. By junior high he was winning citywide art contests. Harris spotted his talent and hired him as principal artist while he was in high school. Ramos’ colorful, elegant designs of fauna and flora were popular, but his real gift was capturing snippets of a simpler life in a Mexican village or the colonias of San Antonio. Candy sellers, tortilla hawkers, flower vendors with their colorful carts and Alamo Plaza’s Chili Queens were among his most popular subjects. Many of his tiles showed dancers. As much as he loved art, Ramos loved dance. In 1934, just 20 years old, he went back to Mexico to focus on his dance skills. There, as fate would have it, he met a glamorous young San Antonio-born woman named Carla Montel. They fell in love, married and embarked on a long and successful international performing career. But every few years Ramos would visit San Antonio, where he continued to work with Harris and create new designs. THE MISSION San Antonio’s Spanish Missions were in disrepair in the 1920s, when the Conservation Society stepped in to purchase and restore Mission San José, known as the Queen of the Missions, with its famous Rose Window and iconic bell tower. In 1934 Harris opened a shop in the mission’s old granary. RIO Magazine

She also built a big new workshop and tile factory called Mission Crafts and the tiles began to be known as “San José tiles.” San José tiles were featured on fountains at World’s Fairs in Chicago and New York, and commissions and souvenir sales boomed. In 1939, Harris joined the Works Progress Administration (WPA) as a technical supervisor. The 60 WPA artists she oversaw produced some lasting public art, from tile steps and murals on the River Walk to the four huge tile murals marking the entrance to the city’s Alamo Stadium. In 1941 she was hired as manager of the San José Mission, where she lived for several years, still managing Mission Crafts. In the late 50s her son built a tile-filled home for her just south of San José. Mission Crafts finally closed in 1977. The Ethel Harris House is now in the National Register of Historic Places. Harris lived to 91. The beautiful San José tiles remain her most lasting legacy.

Over the years, Frost has collected and donated many more beautiful San José tile creations to San Antonio institutions. “My goal is to give it all away to replace what was taken out of San Antonio, either in tourists’ suitcases or by neglect or by California collectors,” Frost said.

THE COLLECTOR San Antonio’s Susan Toomey Frost, a professor and avid collector, brought Harris’ legacy back to the spotlight. She started collecting San José tiles, and soon learned that even many experts believed they came from California’s Mission San José. Her research produced proof of their origin— and some great stories, including the story of Fernando Ramos.

“The Witte Museum has a ton of stuff—all the originals drawings, templates and many single tiles,” she said. There is also a mural in the Witte’s South Texas Heritage Center. When the homestead of San Antonio’s famous Maverick family was sold, Frost found a San José tile mural of a Mexican village, had it restored and donated it to the city. Today you’ll see it on the banks of the River Walk by the El Tropicano Riverwalk Hotel. “It’s the perfect place. Ethel’s first workshop, Mexican Arts and Crafts, was just a few yards away,” Frost said.

The Torch of Friendship

Bloom

The (River ) Art Walk Scavenger Hunt By Drew Henry

Get ready because the San Antonio River Walk is about to turn into an Art Walk! But this is not just any Art Walk. This is an Art Walk Scavenger Hunt. Follow along and see how many masterpieces you can discover. Do not worry. We will make sure to give you some hints along the way. Make sure to tag us on Instagram at @TheSanAntonioRiverWalk and use the hashtag #SARiverWalk so we can check out your artsy finds. Najo Jām

THE TORCH OF FRIENDSHIP Ok, we will start with an easy one. “La Antorcha de la Amistad,” or “The Torch of Friendship,” was designed by the artist Sebastian from Mexico City. The 65-foot, 2-ton, orange steel sculpture is hard to miss! The art piece represents two cultures, languages and roads merging into one. (Hint: The roads are E Commerce and Losoya St.) “The Torch of Friendship” was unveiled in 2002 and has served as a symbol of San Antonio’s shared culture and friendship with Mexico ever since. THE RIVER WALK ART GARDEN The newly established River Walk Art Garden is just past “The Torch of Friendship.” This outdoor museum showcases the city’s latest public art displays and marks the gateway to San Antonio’s art scene. (AKA, this is a great spot to start your scavenger hunt.) Here are some of the top art pieces to check out. GREEN SPACES AT MARKET STREET San Antonio artists Ashley Mireles and Cade Bradshaw teamed up with STIMSON landscape architects to create this art installation portraying flora and fauna of the River Walk. The piece mirrors the duo’s wildlife viewing blinds at the Robert L.B. Tobin Land Bridge at Phil Hardberger Park. (Make sure to check that out, too!)

Stargazer

NAJO JĀM San Antonio artists Carlos Cortés and Doroteo Garza modeled this piece after a peyote cactus to honor the indigenous groups that call San Antonio home. Eventually, this piece will be permanently located at Comanche Lookout Park in City Council District 10. BLOOM Stop and smell the art! The Bloom series by San Antonio artist Leticia Huerta can be found in greenways across the city. The River Walk installations resemble Yellow Columbine and Lantana flowers. STARGAZER Look to the stars for this one! Mexican artist Pedro Reyes created this installation from volcanic rock and marble. The piece features a woman that gazes upon a small star-like object held between her fingers. RIO Magazine

ART EVERYWHERE MURAL WALK We have covered sculpture, and now it is time to change mediums. Are you ready for the Art Everywhere Mural Walk? Art Everywhere is an initiative that celebrates local artists by incorporating their art into the public realm and adding a bit of vibrancy to the city. There are currently 15 Art Everywhere murals gracing downtown, and we are highlighting three, which are just steps off the River Walk. AND YET WE BLOOM MURAL Artist Kat Cadena created this mural as a symbolic emotional response to the murder of George Floyd in 2020. Two women, one indigenous and one black, touch hands in the water and lock eyes in a gaze of support, trust and solidarity. Lotus flowers bloom around them. The lotus represents perseverance, blooming each day regardless of the circumstances. You can find this powerful mural tucked away across the street from the Omni de la Mansion hotel.

Just A Perfect Day

ST. ANTHONY SCULPTURE Steps from the Shops at Rivercenter, you will find a seven-foot bronze statue of Saint Anthony of Padua on the banks of the river. This piece was created by Portuguese sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida and presented to the city during the 1968 World’s Fair at the Portugal Pavilion opening. The work represents the religious influence on the city from the founding of the missions to today. PADRE DAMIAN MASSANET’S TABLE SCULPTURE Are those wedding bells ringing? Make your way down the aisle to Marriage Island to find the next art piece. This small heart-shaped island brings good luck to hundreds of couples who get married here every year. It is also the permanent home of the Padre Damian Massanet’s Table sculpture by San Antonio artist Rolando Briseño. This piece of art commemorates the city’s first Catholic Mass! THE ROBERT H.H. HUGMAN BUST Robert H.H. Hugman is the famed American architect and visionary behind San Antonio’s scenic River Walk. (So, of course, we have to include his bust on the Art Walk Scavenger Hunt!) If you have trouble finding his statue, try searching for The Republic of Texas Restaurant. Then, take a break and recharge with some famous San Antonio Tex-Mex. SABOR DEL MERCADO SCULPTURE We need to take a slight detour from the River Walk and make our way to Historic Market Square for the next find. On the steps of the Centro de Artes Gallery, you will find a giant blue paleta by San Antonio Artist David Blancas, who has created over 50 renditions of San Antonio’s staple dessert. While you are there, check out the gallery space dedicated to telling the story of the Latino experience in South Texas. 34 RIO Magazine

JUST A PERFECT DAY While some murals seek to spark social change, others just aim to capture the perfect day. “Just a Perfect Day” is artist Allison Gregory’s love letter to San Antonio, showcasing the best the city has to offer, from beautiful views to classic margaritas on the river. Have you had the perfect day exploring a slice of the cultural art scene here? Circle the Hyatt Regency parking garage a few times to find this stunning piece. SKY, EARTH & MARIACHI LACHO Luis Valderas’ “Sky, Earth & Mariachi Lacho Over San Antonio” is part of Valderas ‘El Mariachi Lacho Series.’ As an ongoing body of mixed media works, Valderas uses the image of his father, Horacio Sanchez Valderas, dressed in his 1930’s mariachi outfit as an icon and alter ego. Are you feeling just a little bit artsy? Do not forget to share your pictures on Instagram and tag us at @TheSanAntonioRiverWalk. After all, you can be an artist, too!
