Welcome toSan Antonio!
November is a great month in San Antonio, not only is the weather just right, it’s also the time of year we locals get to host family and friends for the Thanksgiving holiday. In this issue, we have collected a number of “Local Favorites;” you can
use this guide to tour the town like a local. Starting on the river walk, we give you the hottest spots to dance the night away and get loud with friends as you discover Nightlife on the River Walk. If you want to venture out of downtown, there are many places around the city to go dancing and enjoy live music, see our top picks including Sam’s Burger Joint, a local rock bar north of downtown. Or head south of downtown to “Southtown” a thriving art district full of neat art shops and unique restaurants. Since you will be staying up late, we suggest starting the day with a delicious Sunday brunch; we picked the top three spots to enjoy sweet and savory mid-day meals in San Antonio. If your idea of relaxing is hitting some birdies and working on your swing, you can find beautiful fields and views in the Surrounding Area Golf Courses. If you want to watch a game instead, check out the top 10 list of the best sports bars in town. Finally, if you are here during Thanksgiving weekend, we encourage you to check out our 33rd annual Ford Holiday River Parade, see the details on page 19. Thanks for visiting, we hope you will be back soon!

When the hustle and bustle of the Alamo City fades for the day, and as dawn turns to dusk, locals and visitors have found there’s always a party going on in downtown San Antonio and along the Riverwalk. The nightlife scene becomes alive and beckons all nocturnal creatures – and that includes you.
So ditch the suit and tie if you’ve just gotten off work. Or if you’re in town for business or vacation, unpack the suitcase and head on out to eat, drink and play at some of the River City’s more happening, hippest and hopping hotspots.
Howl at the Moon You don’t have to be a werewolf to “howl at the moon,” and by this we mean celebrating the night out with a rowdy and boisterous, but fun-loving bunch, who have come to sing, dance and howl the night away, as entertainers perform at this dueling piano bar that keeps the party going. Dance hits and party anthems from the ‘80s, ‘90s and the ever favorite classics keep party-goers bouncing in their seats. Drinks are a plenty where you can order by the glass, by the shot or by the bucket. The latter offers some interesting names including “Adios Mofo,” “Sex on the Moon” and “X-Boyfriend.” As for the shots, take your pick from “Wild Turkey American Honey,” smooth, honey infused whiskey served chill or the “Grape Bomb,” Red Bull and Three Olives Grape Vodka and many more to throw back with friends or new ones you’ve just met. www. howlatthemoon.com.
Durty Nelly’s God bless the Irish for their love of having a good ole time and who have brought a bit of Irish charm to San Antonio with Durty Nelly’s Irish Pub, which is part of the Palacio del Rio hotel. Step inside and you’ll find young and older folk alike enjoying a pint or two, or three, smiling, laughing and singing along to the Piano Man while others enjoy their brew, munch on peanuts and toss the shells on the floor, just like they do back home. If the pub’s charm is the two fireplaces, slate floor and stone walls, then the main attraction are the piano entertainers, who encourage you to join in the frolic and fun. And if you’re in the mood for some Irish fare, the luck o’ the Irish is upon you. Pub grub includes Fish and Chips, Shepard’s Pie, Irish Fries and Nelly’s Wings. Now for a quick history lesson: Durty Nelly’s is a replica of the original Durty Nelly’s in Ireland. The original tavern dates back to 1620 as part of the Bunratty Castle in Limerick. Now if that isn’t reason enough to toast, then the fact that the pub is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year is a very good one. www.durtynellyspub.com.

Coyote Ugly We’ve always wondered why anyone would call their saloon, Coyote Ugly. Is it a watering hole for ugly coyotes? But step inside and you’ll find that it’s anything but – not with attractive gals wandering about in their Daisy Dukes and cowboy boots while serving customers and making drinks behind the bar – and even dancing on the bar. In fact, for you lovely ladies there’s always an opportunity to be featured as a Coyote of the Month. Coyote Ugly offers Happy Hour from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. week days including $3 premium well drinks and $2 domestics. Staff likes to get creative with themes of the week: Saturdays Ladies Night, Armed Forces Sunday and Hump Day Wednesday, all offering a variety of drink specials. There’s also a menu chock full of good eats from appetizers, to saloon sandwiches, entrees and combos. You might be surprised to know that Coyote Ugly was founded by a former New York Catholic school girl. Read all about it at www. coyoteuglysaloon.com.
Kremlin and Havana Ultra Lounge The Cold War has long been over, but the Kremlin in Russia needs to lighten up and have a couple of shots of vodka. However, the two-story Kremlin in downtown San Antonio is the one we encourage you to visit if you’re looking to relax, drink and party in an upscale nightclub. But, first, a word of warning: No cut-off shorts, tennis shoes or tank tops because you won’t be admitted. The dress code is strictly enforced. Ladies, dress to the nines; and gentlemen, shine your shoes, and throw on a jacket or a fedora. “The Kremlin is a San Antonio twist on Las Vegas,” says General Manager Courtney Tissiere, adding that the nightclub offers a large dance floor, VIP areas with bottle service, a laser light show, and its resident DJ spins high energy remixes. “We have the look and feel of two different clubs at one location because of the two levels,” Tissiere says. “Our Havana Ultra Lounge is a more relaxed, casual atmosphere. We’ve expanded our covered patio that overlooks downtown and the Riverwalk.” Sounds like an ultra-cool establishment to us. Check it out. And remember – dress to impress if you’re going to Kremlin, while jeans and T-shirts are fine for Havana Ultra Lounge. www.kremlinsa.com.

— Sam Houston
Had Sam Houston and General Santa Anna sat at a Boudro’s riverside table to share a Blackened Prime Rib and a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon, things may have turned out more amicably. So, if you want to write some Texas history for yourself, join us for lunch or dinner. Frommers says “Everybody loves this old standby on the River Walk.” Join us riverside, inside or (with reservations) on a barge dinner cruise.

BIGA ON THE BANKS First time travelers to San Antonio expect to see the Alamo. What really surprises them is Chef Bruce Auden’s BIGA ON THE BANKS. Located on the San Antonio River Walk, Biga has foodies and food writers taking notice. An impressive New American menu changes daily to utilize the freshest ingredients with an emphasis on local and sustainable products earning Chef Auden seven James Beard Best Chef Nominations. Biga diners enjoy river walk views that soon take a back seat to Auden’s creative dishes. Texas Axis venison with roasted quail, mustard crusted Aussie lamb rack on parmesan polenta, tequila and lime grilled Ahi tuna with avocado crema are a few of the favorites. The Biga bar is traveler’s dream. Single malts, tequilas, and a wine list with hundreds of labels make this bar the perfect place to meet friends or grab a quick snack. Be aware that appetizers including 26 RIO Magazine
pork pot stickers and chicken fried Gulf oysters with mustard hollandaise have been known to change your quick snack into a full-on dinner at the bar. …And who could blame you? Once those appetizers are gone, you can’t help but wonder “what will I have next?” (Go for the Ribeye!) The main dining room is quite lively but if you’re hoping for a more intimate dinner ask for one of the Biga privacy tables for you and that special someone. Call ahead and reserve table 1 or table 10. Both are corner tables in the main dining room where we’ll draw the curtain shut so you and your date can tune out the rest of the world during a romantic dinner. Those having a large gathering in mind can be assured their guests have all of Biga’s award winning food and talent extended to each and every one. With their own dining room, river walk views and terraces Biga is the most memorable experience in San Antonio. Thanksgiving Brunch at Biga is a local favorite. Appealing to both those craving traditional Thanksgiving standards and those looking for more contemporary flavors, this brunch is a crowd pleaser. Book early, reservations for brunch go fast. Of course the food gets a lot of praise at Biga. Let’s not forget that the staff has earned a James Beard Nominations too for Best Service! The modern decor and menu feel ‘big city,’ while the friendly, informed staff still has San Antonio charm.

A very relaxed and friendly place awaits you as you mix and mingle with locals and tourists alike all here to enjoy the sights and sounds of German food, music, beer and a jolly good time. If you also happen to be there on First Friday, no doubt you will catch the First Friday Running Group who end their run with a celebratory pint of German lager! Guten Appetit!

For a Friendly Spot, check out this aptly named outside bar where you, your children and your furry friends are welcome. This Texas icehouse boasts 250 bottled brews to choose from and 76 available on draft. A delectable menu offers snackable foods such as hummus, chili cheese fries, nachos, fish cakes and more while heartier options include fish tacos, burgers, pizza, chicken sandwiches among other items as well as a kiddie menu. Saturday and Sunday brunch is also available and features breakfast burritos, pancakes, omelettes and sliders and more. A Sunday Funday Mimosa for $5 in a 16oz pitcher is also a friendly attraction. During the week and for special events, movies, games and more are offered up on the outside pop-up big screen. A children’s playground is also available. Open till midnight daily, this happening, local spot is a sure-fire way to wind down the day’s activities or get the night started! Give me Liberty or give me Death! Well, maybe not quite the latter but to not check out the Liberty Bar would be a shameful missed opportunity. Liberty Bar has an interesting history. Stemming from the 80’s and actually built in 1984; it used to be housed in a leaning building- the “leaning tower of SA” (from a ground shift due to a flood in 1921) and was formerly on Josephine Street in downtown San Antonio. Moved to the new Southtown location in a building which was a former convent for the Benedictine Sisters in the 1930s, the newly housed bar and restaurant still resonates in its drinking and foodie glorification it had from years past. A two-story bar and restaurant features an eclectic variety of dishes from steak tartare,

Serrano pickled chilies, Italian and grilled dishes, to seafood and wild boar. A vast array of cocktails, beer and wine are available along with an extensive optional menu for breakfast and brunch are available along with a great variety of special events hosted here from music to wine tastings to swing dancing and more. An interesting place to visit and one you won’t forget. Feast your eyes, palate and ears to a beautiful indoor and outdoor restaurant with the cool, hip vibe Southtown was just waiting for but finally happened. Opening in 2011, Feast has the sleek atmosphere, slick vibe and funky feel that added the word “cool” to Southtown. Opened by entrepreneur Andrew Goodman and a collaboration with Chef Stefan Bowers, the two have developed a menu featuring New American cuisine combined with a Mediterranean flair offering a wide variety of “small plates”, appetizers, entrees and desserts. A unique Royal Menu of cocktails is available fit for a King such as the appropriately named Queen, Prince, Jester and more. Sunday Brunch is an event not to be missed complete with a vast brunch menu, sparkling Mimosa’s, potent Bloody Mary’s and a DJ mixing tunes reminiscent of a club lounge. Sparkling chandeliers light up the rooms and unique lighting alight the trees outside on their patio in the front and back perfect for Fall evenings. Make your way to the colorful and party-happening spot of Azuca Nuevo Latino where you can dine, dance and drink to the sounds of Cumbia, Salsa, Latin Pop and more. Enjoy a live band on the weekends and experience delicious Latin American cuisine available daily. Uniting the flavors, service, ambience and style of the Caribbean, Central and Latin America, Azuca will delight your palate and entice your senses with their exotic but simple fare, unique décor and lively staff. Take advantage of their eclectic drink menu featuring many Latin drink specialties showcasing a wide variety of Sangria’s, Mojitos, Pisco Sours and more. Maybe want to learn a little Salsa before dinner? You can do it here as well by taking their Saturday class from 4-6pm right before the evening gets started where you can hone your skills and show the locals you can shake it like they can! Even better, go all out and indulge in everything Latin by ordering their Prix Fix menu options offering a set price and covering the menu from start to finish- appetizers to dessert- a definite foodie lover’s delight! Ole! Wherever you decide to stroll down and around South Alamo, you are destined to find your spot whether you are strolling, sipping or savoring the area’s hip cuisine and unique drinking establishments. There is a spot for everyone; furry friends included keeping Southtown uniquely downtown and most definitely San Antonio.
The beautiful 1930s former home of the Benedictine Sisters now houses one of San Antonio’s local favorites, the Liberty Bar.

SA LOVES
LIVE MUSIC By Camille Di Maio
If you are visiting San Antonio, then you have likely walked along our incomparable River Walk, and listened to wafting Mariachi music reminding you that you’re just north of the Mexican border. Any good traveler wanting to expand beyond the confines of the “tourist” label will want to know where the locals go, though. When it comes to the music scene, San Antonio delivers. In the mood for country music? Look no further than a short drive up the highway to Gruene Hall. This best-kept secret is a favorite of locals, and a find for our guests. Looking every inch of its one hundred thirty-six years, its walls are adorned with the photographic echoes of musical acts that have graced its stage through the decades. Seven nights a week, you can find up and coming artists who are building their following, as well as major headliners who are taking a break from the screaming crowed to enjoy the intimacy that the oldest dance hall in Texas provides. Garth Brooks and George Strait are just a few of the greats who played here before anyone knew their names. Who might you discover?
38 RIO Magazine
Much closer to downtown, the neon LP lights of Sam’s Burger Joint illuminate the corner of Broadway and Grayson, and point the way to this perennial local favorite. Recently undergoing a quarter million dollar renovation, it is reputed to be one of the top live music venues in the state, boasting artists that range from swing to funk and everything in between. Equally beloved for its burgers, beer, and fries, this is a one-stop-shop for feeling like you live here. Keeping pace with the healthy farm-to-market trend, The Cove offers as much of an Austin feel as anything south of the capitol city. And it doesn’t stop with fresh, local food. Hidden behind a laundromat, The Cove has a secret garden of outdoor atmosphere, eclectic vibes, and laid back enjoyment of jazz, gospel, Americana, and more. They proudly feature local acts, even embracing an open mic night, but also welcome touring acts on their way up in the musical scene. The Cove is familyfriendly, and a must for anyone wanting to feel as if they’ve seen the “real” San Antonio. Make no mistake. San Antonio holds its own against our neighbor to the north. Come and see for yourself.

Brunch in SanA ntonio
GRUENE
AUNFELS
{ By Beth Bond }
When it’s late morning and you’re sitting in front of a plate of comfort food with a mimosa in hand, it’s nearly impossible to think of anything better than brunch. By definition it’s leisurely and a bit decadent — unbeatable, really. Read on for a list of a few of our favorite San Antonio eateries to visit mid-morning and learn how to brunch like a local this weekend. SEGUIN
{ The Magnolia Pancake Haus } If you’re ordering pancakes for brunch, you might as well go all out and do it right. Go for scratch-made batter of farm-fresh eggs, real butter and pure buttermilk — precisely what’s on the menu at The Magnolia Pancake Haus. Opened in 2000, this restaurant now has two locations, and owners Robert and Sheila Fleming claim their menu “has become the new standard for breakfast in San Antonio.” Sheila grew up in Munich, Germany, eating her Oma’s apfel pfannekuchen, which the couple now serves at the restaurants. If you’d like the authentic taste of Bavaria for brunch, this is the order for you: Granny Smith apples, cinnamon and spice combined in a puffed pancake made to order and topped with powdered sugar and European-style whipped cream. Open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. Two locations: 606 Embassy Oaks San Antonio, TX 78216 (210) 496-0828 magnoliapancakehaus.com
10333 Huebner Road San Antonio, TX 78240
{ The Guenther House } There’s much to be said about the historic Guenther House, built in 1859 as the private residence of Pioneer Flour Mills founder Carl Hilmar Guenther. The German immigrant started a modest flour mill in Fredericksburg in 1851 and moved to the bend of the San Antonio River for a better water source eight years later. It’s now a museum, restaurant and gourmet baking store, but let’s stick to what’s really important here: the brunch. It only makes sense that the legacy of a businessman who built his success on a gristmill would be celebrated for its baked goods. Try the Pioneer buttermilk biscuits and country gravy, sweet cream waffles, buttermilk pancakes and just about anything from the pastry case: strudels, muffins, sticky buns and cinnamon rolls. Breakfast is served from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. seven days a week 205 East Guenther St. San Antonio, TX 78204 (800) 235-8186 guentherhouse.com facebook.com/theguentherhouse RIO Magazine

{ Las Canarias at the Omni La Mansión del Rio} A Sunday meal at Las Canarias is the stuff of hotel brunch legend. Imagine just about anything you’d like to eat for brunch, and it’s more than likely available at one of the stations serving up omelets, waffles, fruits and cheeses, meats and salads. Not to mention the unlimited Champagne and mimosas. What’s more, the food at this AAA Four Diamond restaurant on the River Walk is plentiful but also carefully prepared and beautifully presented. Don’t miss the chilaquiles or the blueberry soufflé pancakes with lemon curd and cream. Brunch is served 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays.

San Antonians love to dance and the locals can find every style from country to salsa to disco in the area.
It all started back in the 1800s when cowboys, traveling salesmen and New Braunfels locals two-stepped their honeys across the dance floor at Gruene Hall which opened in 1875 and is Texas’ oldest continually operating and most famous dance hall. Willie Nelson, Jerry Lee Louis and many big timers got their start there and continue to perform from time to time. Nothing much has changed over the years; the typical wooden old west bar, 6000 square foot dance floor and outdoor pavilion reflect its beginnings and the daily live music is a real treat. Located in a charming village outside of New Braunfels, it’s worth the trip. www. gruenehallcom - 830.606.1281 Closer to the Riverwalk, you can boot scoot boogie at several clubs. John T. Floore Country Store opened in 1942 as a Honky Tonk and restaurant with legendary performers including Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Lyle Lovett and Little Richard with some of today’s most popular country singers in the lineup. GOLF SAN ANTONIO By Mauri Elbel
Whether meandering along the cypress-fringed paths of the River Walk, visiting historic sites or nationally acclaimed museums, San Antonio offers something for visitors of all ages and interests. But golfers visiting San Antonio are particularly in luck––this dynamic destination boasts more than 50 courses and practice greens and averages 300 days of sunshine a year. Swing your clubs at some of the most picturesque resorts in the Hill Country or enjoy the convenience of playing at centrally-located courses just minutes from downtown. Below are four San Antonio-area courses sure to challenge golfers of all skill levels.
Brackenridge Park Golf Course Play a round along the San Antonio River at Brackenridge Park Golf Course, the state’s most historic course which opened in 1916 by renowned golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast. Just a short drive north of downtown, Brackenridge Park Golf Course is nestled in the heart of the Alamo City Golf Trail. As the oldest public golf course in Texas, Brackenridge Park Golf Course is the new site of the Texas Golf Hall of Fame. This fun citypark course was also the first-ever to host the Texas Open Golf Tournament in 1922, serving as home to the PGA Tour’s Texas Open almost every year until 1959, welcoming golf legends including Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and Sam Snead over the years. Fast-forward nearly a century from its opening, and golfers will find Brackenridge still offers an entertaining round with its elevated greens and tight tree-lined fairways. Managed by the non-profit Alamo City Golf Trail, this 18-hold, 6,243-yard, par 72 course is consistently rated as one of the best municipal courses in the country. “Brackenridge Park received a revival in 2008 after a $7.5 million renovation to restore the course to Tillinghast’s original design of 1916,” says Andrew Peterson, director of golf operations. GOLF SAN ANTONIO

The Republic Golf Club Meander Sitting 10 minutes away from San Antonio’s famed River Walk surrounded by oaks, elms and mesquites along picturesque Salado Creek, it’s no wonder The Republic Golf Club has been rated the city’s number one public golf course. As the closest golf club to San Antonio’s historic downtown area, this public course is ideal for visitors. The challenging par-71 layout measures 7,007 yards and incorporates several water features, slight elevation changes, rolling hills, strategic bunkering and breathtaking views. Opened in 2002, The Republic’s outstanding course conditions and country clublike atmosphere combine to make it the “Best in Class” daily fee golf club in San Antonio, says Shane Pearson, head golf professional. And as fall transitions into winter, this course is still fun to play year-round. “With the recent overseed process of winter grass, we will be the ideal place to play our golf round this winter,” says Robby Jan, golf course superintendent. For more, visit: www.republicgolfclub.com.
La Cantera La Cantera Hill Country Resort boasts two championship 18hole courses offering unparalleled Texas Hill Country vistas. Together, La Cantera’s Palmer Course and Resort Course are the first public courses in South Texas to provide 36 holes of championship golf designed by golfing legends. Combining the Hill Country’s spectacular scenery, diverse wildlife and golf course facilities such as the 15,300-square-foot clubhouse overlooking the 18th green, golfers can expect a one-of-akind, first class golfing experience. The Resort Course at La Cantera, a PGA Tour stop for 15 years, was designed by noted golf course architect Jay Morrish and PGA Tour professional Tom Weiskopf. The Resort Course, which opened in 1995, snakes through the Texas Hill Country and offers breathtaking views from myriad points like the sheer 80-foot drop from the 7th tee to the fairway. Play a round for yourself to see why the par-72 course was named one of the Top 10 public access golf courses in the United States by Golf Magazine and one of the best new courses by Golf Digest. La Cantera’s second championship course, The Palmer Course at La Cantera designed by the legendary Arnold Palmer in 2001 is a 6,926-yard, par 71 masterpiece perched on 225 acres winding through the Texas Hill Country. More at: www.resortlacantera.com/golf
JW Marriott TPC With 36 holes of golf designed by two of the sport’s most lauded architects––Pete Dye and Greg Norman––TPC San Antonio is a not-to-miss PGA Tour experience in San Antonio. Opened in January 2010, these two 18-hold championship golf courses feature everything from a clubhouse and multiple dining options to a 23-acre practice facility featuring six tee decks and various target greens and a golf shop stocked with the latest in golf equipment and apparel. The AT&T Oaks Course, an 18-hole, 7,522-yard, par 72 course designed by Norman, is known for its topographic subtleties of Hill Country terrain framed by mature live oaks. The AT&T Canyons Course, an 18-hole, 7,406-yard, par 72 course designed by Dye, features wide fairways, noble trees and Cibilo Canyon panoramas. TPC San Antonio, nestled in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, is a private resort accessible only to members, their guests and guests of San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa. Ranked among Golfweek’s “Best Courses You Can Play in Texas” this year, both the AT&T Oaks and AT&T Canyons Courses’ championship layouts make for a beautiful and challenging day of golf.
