EDITOR’S LETTER The San Antonio River Walk
ENCHANTING NOVEMBER I always think of Halloween as the gateway to San Antonio’s most magical season. Everyone is already well into high school and college football, and our beloved Spurs games have begun. Our loved ones have been honored with month-long Day of the Dead celebrations. Many other cultural festivities occur during this time, and we are settling in for two full months of non-stop holiday traditions. The weather is truly delicious in November. There’s a cool crispness that draws you outdoors. Even the light changes. It is the perfect time for patio dining, and in this issue, we suggest the highest rooftop patios and the coziest basement bars to explore. Performing arts are back and bigger than ever in our many world-class venues. There is no better time to be outside. It is possible to stroll the city’s parks and kayak the San Antonio River by day, and sip cocktails fireside by night. The Luminaria Contemporary Arts Festival and Diwali“Festival of Lights” are both sparkling productions, and just the beginning of what lies ahead. In mid-November, the River Walk will light up with twinkling lights streaming from cypress trees all along the banks of the river. Then the anticipated day-after-Thanksgiving arrives when downtown San Antonio shines brilliantly as the Ford River Parade, now in its 40th year, ushers in the holiday season.

The Moon's Daughters
This is the perfect time of year to take advantage of outdoor patios, particularly ones on high that catch a good cross-breeze. Alternately, there is never a wrong time to find a sexy cave to hideaway for the evening with someone special. Here are some of the Alamo City’s most delightful rooftop and basement bars. Try them all—make a night of it! THE MOON’S DAUGHTERS The Moon’s Daughters is the new kid in town, but we cannot fairly call it a kid as it is one of the most sophisticated new hot spots to grace our city. This rooftop bar and restaurant, situated on the 20th floor of the also new Thompson Riverwalk Hotel behind the Tobin Center, offers some of the most breathtaking views of downtown, along with live music and nighttime DJ’s at sunset. The gorgeous loungy patio is one of the prime spaces for an evening of canoodling or carousing with your besties, enjoying refined cocktails and impressive Mediterranean-inspired cuisine from Chef Robert Cantu that takes bar food to a whole new level. Satiate your thirst with craft cocktails like the Moon Over Morocco (St. Liberty Bertie’s Bourbon, Ras el Hanout, Orange Bitters) or the Tripoli (Tromba Blanco, Watermelon Liqueur, Pineapple, Agave, Citrus) while diving into some sous vide Char Grilled Octopus Skewers and Hot Braised Wings, which are as beautiful to behold visually as they are to eat. Truth be told, my favorite dish is the Lamb Ragu over a bed of velvety hummus with charred shabazi onions, fried mint and the housemade pita bread. Over the moon, is right! thesanantonioriverwalk.com
JAZZ, TX Next, head down under at JAZZ, TX in the basement of the Food Hall in the Bottling Department at the historic Pearl. I walked by this place for years, every weekend at the Pearl Farmers Market, before discovering the chic paradise that existed downstairs. It is like stepping into a sultry upscale NYC speakeasy.
Yes indeed, friends, you must go to listen to the live music. Not only does our city’s iconic jazz musician, Doc Watkins and his Quartet, play often, but various renowned musical acts are featured throughout the month, across genres but with an emphasis on jazz, of course. So, while you go for the music, the food and drinks should not be underestimated, because in terms of a well-rounded evening out, JAZZ, TX checks all the boxes. The cocktails here are quite literally some of the best I have ever had in the city, but no shock there as the General Manager, Jake Corney, trained under the late Sasha Petraske, a mixologist extraordinaire. Try their Ensemble cocktail (Large Rock, Bourbon, Brown Sugar, Peach, Basil, Bitters) with a few nibbles like the Shrimp Ceviche or Tres Mini Briskets (tacos) or go big with the Marcona Almond Chicken or Pasta Creole. Truth is, you cannot go wrong... unless you have too many cocktails! Reservations are a must and keep your eye out for “Christmas in JAZZ, TX” tickets, which go on sale after Thanksgiving.

OTRO BAR Head back up – to Otro Bar, located in the Canopy Hotel by Hilton San Antonio Riverwalk and let the night continue to shine. From this third-floor open-air terrace bar that overhangs the River Walk, you can enjoy relaxing views of the native Cypress trees that line the river. Otro showcases an agave-forward cocktail menu with signature drinks like No Seas Fresa (Espolon Silver Tequila, Strawberry Basil Jarabe, Naranja Orange Liqueur, Lime Juice), along with tapa-style eats, including Adobo Chicken Tacos, Halibut Ceviche and housemade Guacamole. Otro recently introduced a fun monthly event, “Asanas and Agave,” wherein yogis who love cocktails (raise your hands!) can find their zen during a 50-minute yoga class followed by an equally zen-tastic tequila cocktail.
Jet-Setter
JET-SETTER Not far—just a hop skip and jump—along Houston Street is yet another mind-blowing basement bar, almost hidden, across the street from the historic Majestic Theatre. Jet-Setter is also a must for cocktail enthusiasts as Benjamin Krick, owner and barkeep, is one of San Antonio’s most notable cocktail wizards. This mid-century airline lounge bar is dedicated to offering an international experience by artlessly blending spirits, exotic ingredients, technique and hospitality to create a global vibe that surpasses our often down-home Texas culture.
Havana Bar by Nick Simonite JAZZ, TX
Their new bar menu includes exciting new offerings as well as bar favorites. The Portofino, for example, is Krick’s Mediterranean take on a traditional martini. Made with Spanish gin, Italian season infused dry vermouth, lemon bitters, olive oil and a grilled olive garnish, there is little doubt this drink is set to impress, as are they all. charming historic hotel that transports you all the way to Cuba and beyond with their pan-Latin theme. The Havana Bar, located in the basement, is truly authentic and such an eclectic little speakeasy that it is unforgettable. They recently introduced some delicious new cocktails, including the Tocororo, which is named after the national bird of Cuba and is made with Redemption Rum Cask Finish Rye, Lemon Juice, Simple Syrup, Egg White and Malbec Bloat, as well as the Melcher’s Mai Tai (Martinique Agricole Rum, Smith & Cross Jamaican Rum, Dry Curacao, Orgeat Syrup, Simple Syrup, Lime, Mint Bouquet). However, make sure to take in the upstairs restaurant Ocho for, at the very least, an appetizer or dessert. Situated in a magnificent glass conservatory overlooking the River Walk, it is a worldrenowned restaurant with surprisingly affordable eats. FAIRMOUNT ROOFTOP OYSTER BAR Finally, just on the edge of the Southtown Arts District, you will find one of San Antonio’s most beautiful historic hotels. The Fairmount is home to two incredible restaurants, Nonna Osteria and Silo Prime. They also feature the stunning Fairmount Rooftop Oyster Bar that offers lovely views of the downtown skyline, not to mention a thoughtfully-curated menu that includes a wide range of tasty oysters, Alaskan king crab, little neck clams on the half shell, Maine lobster, seared ahi tuna and more. Grab your oyster shooter and toast to a night in good ol’ San Antonio!

Since 2016, the Saga projection has delighted locals and visitors alike. The show covers 7,000 square feet of light, color and visual narration with three viewings at 9:00, 9:30 and 10:00pm. This unique video art projection by international artist Xavier de Richemont depicts the historical discovery, settlement and development of San Antonio, Texas and United States history. Bring the kids and sit on a blanket or bench at Main Plaza. Free weekend parking is available on nearby lots. There is also free parking at city-operated parking garages, parking lots and parking meters from 5:00pm to 2:00am every Tuesday. November 13, 2021 LUMINARIA CONTEMPORARY ARTS FESTIVAL This vibrant nighttime celebration of the arts features the ingenuity, talent and imagination of more than 50 artists from across Texas and includes music, fine arts, film, digital art, dance, theatre, poetry, lasers, lights and large-scale art installations. Free and open to the public, the festival is held at Hemisfair, the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center and along the San Antonio River Walk downtown, allowing for safe social distancing outdoors while your family enjoys the art. Held from 6:00pm through midnight, Luminaria is one of South Texas’ most popular contemporary art festivals. November 19, 2021 - January 2, 2022 LIGHTSCAPE AT SAN ANTONIO BOTANICAL GARDEN Enchanting magical light displays, including installations unique to Texas created by local and international artists, will illuminate a glittering one-mile path through the 38-acre SA Botanical Garden during “Lightscape” San Antonio 2021. To dazzle the senses, the trail will feature a oneof-a-kind experience, blending new works, including a field of Texas bluebonnets, with guest favorites, such as the show-stopping Winter Cathedral, an impressive towering cathedral arch tunnel sparkling with 100,000 lights. Besides just the glittering light displays, festive food and drinks will be available, including freshly-roasted s’mores. Tickets are already on sale: SABOT Members will receive a discount on online ticket purchases, and for others, tickets will be $25 for adults and $18 for kids; however, check the website to see if any other discounts or offers may apply. Your kids may have seen “trail of lights” displays before, but nothing that lights up the night like Lightscape. This event first premiered to sold-out crowds in the United Kingdom as well as in Chicago; this year Lightscape shines in San Antonio.

We are Talking All Kinds of LIONS! This kind
In that time of year where the beauty and majesty of downtown San Antonio begins to shine its brightest, there is nothing more equally beautiful and majestic than that revered King of the Jungle, the lion... or an animal who also happens to have “lion” in its name. If you have never explored these massive/ enchanting creatures, why not do something a little different to kick off the holiday season and take in a “lion’s share” of the following interactive exhibits and shows? 20 RIO Magazine

DISNEY’S THE LION KING AT THE MAJESTIC THEATRE Get ready to break out those animal prints and sing “Hakuna Matata” as one of San Antonio’s best-loved musicals, The Lion King, returns to the Alamo City for performances at the Majestic Theatre that are currently running through Nov. 7. Based on the hit 1994 animated film of the same name, this tour de force production features live action versions of Simba, Nala, Mufasa, Scar and the rest of the gang in a stage adventure that pits good against evil in the quest to preserve the Circle of Life. The stage adaptation, which showcases giant puppets, actors in stunning animal costumes and an award-winning score composed

by songwriting duo Elton John and Tim Rice, also features six indigenous African languages that are spoken throughout the show. This, coupled with unforgettable, show-stopping tunes, stunning visual artistry and exhilarating choreography has made this modern day theatrical classic one of the most awe-inspiring ever brought to life onstage, and is certainly not one to be missed. A winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, the musical adaptation of The Lion King has garnered 70 major theatre awards internationally and is the third longest-running Broadway show in history next to Phantom of the Opera and Chicago respectively. San Antonio theatergoers will definitely be feeling the love tonight!

BIG CAT VALLEY AT THE SAN ANTONIO ZOO For those adventurous folk who want to see the real thing, this lion habitat at the San Antonio Zoo is about as close as you can get to coming “face-to-face” with the royals of the jungle. The lion portion of Big Cat Valley features two male African lions—Tau and Josh; and two female African lions, Sarabi and Axelle. The habitat includes a heated rock, as well as areas for the lions to lay elevated towards the back wall, and a pool. Oh, did I also mention visitors who are feeling spunky can challenge a lion to a tug-of-war during designated hours? There is a rope that extends in between multiple barriers that separate the habitat from the guests so participants can safely test their strength against a big, furry contender behind the barriers. The habitat’s enhancements, completed in 2016, cost in the neighborhood of a million dollars, providing additional space for the lions to roam along with an improved viewing of the majestic felines thanks to the installation of a larger, tempered and reinforced glass. The exhibit, which also houses Sumatran tigers, is one of the zoo’s most popular attractions.

SEA LIONS AT SEAWORLD® SAN ANTONIO Lions aren’t only found on land. Some of them can be viewed at SeaWorld San Antonio where oceanic lions of a different kind can be found swimming, frolicking and just being overall adorable with us humans. The sea lions, who are members of the seal family and are descended from the larger, now extinct Japanese sea lion, are featured in a variety of different interactive exhibits in which the entire family can participate: •
SEA LION HIGH Located at Sea Lion Stadium, audiences will witness amazing animal behaviors and fun interaction as the zany sea lion duo of Clyde and Seamore go back to school in what turns out to be a rather slippery pursuit of their diplomas. The show, which takes place in an aquatic-themed high school where laughter and education go hand-in-flipper, makes for some hilarious hijinks as Clyde and Seamore float to the heads of their class in a fun, fast-paced storyline.

•
SEA LION TOUR Participants will get up-close and personal in this interactive exhibit that features a meet-and-greet with a sea lion. Visitors also will learn about these delightful animals from the trainers who get to work with them every day. Other activities include touching and feeding a sea lion as well as photo opportunities with them.
•
IN-WATER SEA LION INTERACTION This popular two-hour interaction is back for sea lion lovers who would just as soon prefer latching on to a welcoming flipper as they would catching a ride back to shore with a dolphin. Participants will get to play the role of an animal ambassador in training during their swim, interacting with sea lions both in and out of the water who will provide a thrilling tandem tow across their habitat.
•
SEA LIONS (AND OTTERS) AT PLAY Did you know that sea lions are powerful swimmers using their front flippers to propel through the water? Or that otters have a thick coat of fur that helps keep them warm in frigid temperatures? These and more fun facts are shared during this spotlight on whimsical sea lions (and quirky otters) as they engage in play in this family-friendly show in which guests will get a closer look at these remarkable creatures and learn more about them.

The Greatest Show on Dirt The Tejas Rodeo Company and Tejas Steakhouse & Saloon are a true taste of Texas
The western lifestyle is alive and kickin’ in Bulverde, Texas, just a short drive from downtown San Antonio. With an award-winning steakhouse, open pro-rodeo entertainment and a live music concert following every rodeo performance, this family-friendly venue offers an authentic Texas experience. From the time you enter the gates, you are transported to the Old West with pre-show vendors selling iconic western wear and souvenirs, lots of activities and a mechanical bull for the kids — or their folks — to test their rodeo skills. Begin the evening at the Tejas Steakhouse & Saloon, which has been featured on Top Chef. BBQ, burgers and the famous KC Steak go down easily with local spirits, ice-cold beer and delicious cocktails — Sunday Brunch highlights include steak and eggs, biscuits and gravy, tacos and more. Open four days a week, Thursday through Sunday, reservations are highly recommended. Then it is showtime, where cowgirls and cowboys, whose passions and professions thesanantonioriverwalk.com
revolve around the true western heritage of rodeo, travel from across the state to produce an action-packed, entertaining and professional rodeo for local guests and visitors from around the world. It is a full rodeo performance with a grand entry and patriotic display of flags, bull riding, roping, barrel racing, a calf scramble and even mutton bustin’ for the kids (pre-registration required). Tejas rodeos take place every Saturday from March through November. Live music and dancing are just steps away from the rodeo arena at the venue’s covered pavilion. When the rodeo is over, visitors are welcome to stay and listen to the sounds of a local country and western band, and take a two-steppin’ spin around the dance floor.
If you want to turn your Tejas experience into a romantic getaway for two, an onsite bunkhouse is a cozy nook carved out of one of the original barns on the property. Nestled under a canopy of oaks, the original structure was constructed in the 1800s and has been remodeled, complete with hardwood floors, a claw-footed bath tub and arched ceilings. For corporate events, rodeos for up to 5,000 attendees can be booked. It’s a truly unique team building experience, whether large or small. The Western Sky wedding venue includes three outdoor ceremony site options and indoor reception space for 300 guests. Both private events offer a variety of customized packages.

San Antonio’s Festival of Lights
By Susan Yerkes
Dancing lights, the sparkle of jewels on a shimmering silk sari, the colorful grace of traditional Indian dances... San Antonio lights up for Diwali, the “Festival of Lights.” The holiday, celebrated in India and throughout Asia, is a joyful occasion—and part of the enchanting tapestry of cultures here. 28 RIO Magazine

Diwali SA
“The lights of Diwali signify the triumph of good over evil,” said Santanu Das, Vice President of the India Association of San Antonio. For Das and many other India expats, the celebration evokes happy recollections, and serves as a bridge to Indian culture for the whole community.
SA India Association
“Most of our childhood memories around Diwali revolve around meeting friends and family, new clothes, homemade sweets, lights—and the single most important thing—fireworks!” Das said. “San Antonio has been a home-awayfrom-home for many India-origin families. The India Association goes to great lengths using this festival to bring the community together to celebrate it with grandeur.” Last year, Covid put the kibosh on big Diwali celebrations. But this year, the India Association celebrated Oct. 30 with a major event, combining the festivities with its annual Festival of India, usually held in the spring. Hundreds of members of the association and friends from around the city gathered to enjoy the flavors of home with traditional music and dance performances and savory snacks that evoke India’s regional cuisines.
SA India Association
The association’s bash has grown from a relatively small event to a much larger one, as professionals and their families from India have moved here— many drawn by tech jobs at major corporations including USAA, Valero and Rackspace, all headquartered here. The city’s constantly expanding medical centers have brought many Indian physicians here, as has the thriving hotel business, according to Das.

DIWALI FACTS • Diwali has become the most celebrated holiday season in India—think Christmas or Thanksgiving in the U.S. In India it is a five-day festival, marked by prayer, feasts, family gatherings and fireworks. Today, the holiday has become more widely popularized, and cities and towns worldwide host Diwali celebrations. • The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit dipavali, meaning “row of lights.” In India, many families and businesses display rows of lighted clay lamps. • Diwali’s formal dates, usually in October or November, are based on the Hindu lunar calendar, which marks the months by the time it takes the moon to orbit Earth. • For many businesses in India, the fourth day of Diwali is considered the first day of the financial new year. • Buddhists, Sikhs and Jains also celebrate Diwali as a religious holiday. While each religion has its own origin story, all of them center on the triumph of good over evil. •. Fireworks—both big displays and family fireworks in the streets—have come to be a major part of India’s Diwali celebrations. In the city of Delhi, so many people set off fireworks that they were banned because of resulting air pollution.

This month, another, much larger Diwali celebration is set for Nov. 6. It is Diwali SA. The festival, a free city-wide bash in Hemisfair Park, developed from San Antonio’s sister city relationship with the Indian city of Chennai (formerly Madras). Since Diwali is celebrated in many Asian countries, the two cities chose it as a yearly festival to reach from Texas to India, says Kausi Subramaniam, owner of Kalalaya Indian Arts and president of Anuja, the sister city organization that organizes Diwali SA. “It is something more universal than smaller festivals in Chennai’s state, Tamil Nadu, and it is also celebrated in some form or fashion by people of all religions in India. Everybody participates,” she said. The city’s Covid precautions scotched Diwali SA in 2020. But in 2019, Subramaniam says more than 40,000 folks came to the one-night celebration (in part, because of a huge Day of the Dead party across the street in La Villita, she added.)
dancing lights set to music. Even the ground will be dressed up with floor art displays like those made in many Indian homes for the holiday. Traditional Indian dance and music will be on several stages, and food stands will perfume the air with the rich smells of Indian cooking. Floating candles will fill the Hemisfair fountain by the Tower of the Americas. “We light the candles for our guests to put in the water and make a wish,” Subramaniam says. “This year the ceremony will be more reflective, as we think of what we have all been through in the last year.” WRITER’S BIO Susan Yerkes is an award-winning journalist and travel writer based in San Antonio. She has celebrated Diwali in India, and continues to celebrate diversity, and the victory of light over darkness in troubled times.
This year the festival will offer more social distancing room. It will also feature more lights than ever. For the first time, the entire park will be professionally illuminated, with thesanantonioriverwalk.com
Celebrate the Holiday season along the San Antonio River Walk FORD HOLIDAY RIVER PARADE FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2021 The 40th Annual Ford Holiday River Parade is a San Antonio tradition that officially kicks off the city’s holiday season. Under a canopy of 100,000 bright and colorful lights draped over the towering bald Cypress Trees that line the River Walk, festive and lighted floats usher in the holidays in a spectacular one-hour parade. Themed “40 Years of Magic” for the 2021 season, two special additions are included in this anniversary edition. San Antonio actor Cody Garcia will star as Grand Marshal Willy Wonka in a musical performance at the start of the parade, similar those during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York, and he will resume the role in the Majestic’s Broadway production of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory the following week, December 7-12. For a pre-parade show, illuminated kayaks, sponsored by Mission Kayaks, will cruise the river. This ticketed parade begins at 6:00pm and is broadcast live at 7:00pm at the Arneson River Theater. Several free viewing areas are offered along the parade route (bring your own chair) on a first-come basis between Richmond Avenue and Pecan Street on the east side of the River Walk. Early ticket prices range from $15 -$40 and children 2 years of age or older will need a ticket. Strollers and carriers are not allowed on the River Walk for this event. ADA tickets are available in certain areas. FORD HOLIDAY BOAT CAROLING DECEMBER 2-23, 2021 Celebrate the timeless tradition of spreading joy with a San Antonio twist. Sing in the holidays by caroling with friends and family from your private, one-hour rented boat on the River Walk, and encourage spectators along the banks of the river to join in the fun as you drift by! Caroling boats are decorated with lights and holiday bling and include a driver, a USB loaded
with popular Christmas music and folders with music lyrics. Each boat can accommodate a maximum of 15 people (children under the age of 2 are not counted toward boat capacity). Other types of festive holiday music such as mariachis, bell-ringers and bands are also welcome to book a caroling boat. With two timeslots on Mondays through Thursdays and three on Fridays through Sundays, merry songs fill every evening during the holiday season.
FORD FIESTA DE LAS LUMINARIAS DECEMBER 3-19, 2021 Experience the holiday ambience of the San Antonio River Walk as you stroll along the lush banks guided by more than 2,000 glowing luminarias—the traditional Mexican Christmas lantern originally consisting of a candle set in sand inside a small bag. This centuries-old tradition begins at dusk Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for three weekends in December.

Santa Claus is Coming to the River Walk! The 40th Annual Ford River Parade Ushers in the Holidays in San Antonio By Drew Henry
You may not know this, but Santa’s favorite vacation destination is the San Antonio River Walk. After all, it is a lot warmer than the North Pole, and Santa does have a soft spot for tacos and margaritas. For 40 years, Santa has helped the City of San Antonio turn on the holidays at the annual Ford Holiday River Parade. This event features a fantastic lineup of river floats and the big reveal of the holiday lights. Here is everything you need to know about the big day and how to get in the holiday spirit—San Antonio-style!

The Ford Holiday River Parade has been a San Antonio holiday tradition ever since Santa decided to cruise the river 40 years ago. Over 50,000 people attended the first Holiday River Parade, and it only continues to grow. USA Today declared it the 4th best holiday parade in the United States for the last two years! This year, Santa and Mrs. Claus are back with more glitter and glee to carry on this wonderful tradition and celebrate four decades of magical fun. This year’s theme is “40 Years of Magic,” and the parade will feature illuminated floats and costumed parade participants harking back to some of the most popular parade themes through the decades. It is going to be a blast from holiday’s past! Santa and a few of his San Antonio-based elves have spent the whole year planning the parade, and they cannot wait for the big reveal. Tony Villejo and Tina Sturchio are two of the “head elves” in the year-long planning process. Tony is the lead parade float artist. He and a team come up with the themes, and he draws the floats by hand months ahead of time. Tina then brings his designs to life. Her company, Sturchio Events, has brought San Antonio events alive for more than 50 years, even helping plan the 1968 World’s Fair. Tony builds new props and Tina’s team assembles the floats in the marina in the days leading up to the parade. It is all hands on deck to build all twenty-seven floats in time for Santa’s arrival.
thesanantonioriverwalk.com
The hour-long parade starts at Lexington Avenue at 6:00pm. Twenty-seven brightly decorated floats will cruise along the downtown River Walk and they will make a stop at the historic Arneson River Theatre at 7:00pm for a televised live broadcast that is syndicated nationally throughout the holidays. Here, the parade’s grand marshal kicks off the holidays by magically turning on the lights in the Arnesan River Theatre. This year, San Antonio actor Cody Garcia will star as the Grand Marshal Willy Wonka from the hit Broadway play Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and he will resume his role the following week at The Majestic Theatre. (Performances run from December 7–12 at The Majestic Theatre, if you’d like to catch the show on your visit.) The Arneson River Theatre is a great place to grab a seat for the show because this is where all the action happens! Here, the parade is broadcast live on CW35. So, you may even get your shot at being on TV, where over one million people tune in every year. However, there is nothing like catching the parade in-person and waving to Santa. Ticket prices for the parade range from $15–$40 depending on the viewing area, and they come with a designated seat along the river. Tickets sell out every year, so it is best to secure them early on The San Antonio River Walk website, www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com. First-comefirst-serve free viewing areas are also available along the parade route between Pecan Street and Richmond Avenue.

Canopy by Hilton San Antonio Riverwalk Where Urban Contemporary Design Meets Authentic Hospitality San Antonio is a city that blends diverse cultures from around that world and marries modern design and culinary concepts with rich history and architecture. From the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park to the burgeoning distillery and craft beer scene, to the myriad art galleries of Southtown, there is always something new to explore in the Alamo City for visitors and residents alike. Nestled in the heart of downtown, the Canopy by Hilton San Antonio Riverwalk boutique hotel opened in April 2021 to mirror these eclectic attributes of its city and share these with guests traveling from near and far. Its team, or enthusiasts, act as local guides and go above and beyond to ensure a positive stay while sharing their favorite places to visit and dine in the city. Designed by Gensler and Mark Zeff with Lake | Flato as the architects, the classic, chic hotel is situated on the historic San Antonio River Walk across from the Aztec Theatre and within walking distance from the Alamo and the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The building’s central location dates back to the mid-19th century where it originally stood as a bustling financial institution until it transformed into Fish Market & Bakery in 1977. Several historical artifacts were preserved within the hotel’s riverfront restaurant, including the original wall of the
fish market and a large cistern previously used by ranchers traveling into the city seeking fresh water and refuge. Canopy’s 195 “Just-Right” rooms, including eight well-appointed suites, possess a modern, industrial feel with local art from Blue Star Contemporary and Ruiz-Healy Art galleries, among others. Standout artists throughout these rooms, suites and common spaces include Cruz Ortiz, Ethel Shipton, Chuck Ramirez and Carlos Betancourt. Small details make the difference in the guest rooms, with features such as leather chairs, handwoven textiles and custom shower tiles whose quatrefoil shape honor San Antonio’s four pillars: people, promise, passion and pride. When guests have worked up an appetite exploring San Antonio’s urban core, two dining options will appease their palates: Domingo Restaurante and Otro
Bar. Open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, Domingo is an open-air restaurant offering the flavors of South Texas and an agave-forward beverage program. Led by Mexico-born executive chef, Arturo Trevino, popular menu items include the inventive Short-Rib Quesadillas, Cilantro Marinated Halibut and the Green Chile and Chicken Enchiladas. The Churro Waffle stands out as a locally inspired brunch item not to be missed. Three floors up, Otro is a terrace bar that protrudes over the iconic San Antonio River Walk. Otro features a curated cocktail list by a knowledgeable bar staff with light fare such as Adobo Chicken Tacos, Halibut Ceviche and Guacamole, complemented by views of the native Cypress trees and river below. Vibrant floor tiles imported from Mexico add to the breezy, relaxed atmosphere. Once per month, Otro hosts an “Asanas and Agave” event, which includes a yoga class followed by a refreshing tequila cocktail. “We aim to bridge that gap between paying homage to the warm, inviting hospitality culture that has always existed in SATX and the sophisticated, art deco design and lively atmosphere you might find in a larger city,” said Canopy San Antonio General Manager Daniel Haughan. “We pair these concepts together to reach an urban, contemporary feel without sacrificing our passion and outstanding service.”

FALL Nothing on this list is pumpkin-spiced. But everything is certified as a San Antonio fall favorite. PIGSKINS AND PINTS Fall is synonymous with football in Texas, and the best seats are at LandShark Bar & Grill in the Shops at Rivercenter. Inspired by favorite “beach joints,” there is nothing like mixing a tropical vibe and some fall football. Indoor seating, a menu that consists of American beach food and a spacious outdoor bar serving cold draft LandShark and fabulous frozen concoctions are a great way to get your game-day fix.
BARBECUE TO THE RESCUE If you want to have a home-field advantage during your football viewing party, opt for a Barbecue Emergency Kit from The County Line. For about $15 per person, you can have your pick of brisket, sausage, turkey, chicken and all sorts of sides and fixin’s. They’ve got gluten-free options, as well as vegetarian and vegan choices. But don’t sleep on Grandma’s Banana Pudding. It’s the real MVP.
