Fiesta® San Antonio takes place on April 18 – 28 this year, and this annual festive and honored tradition is always the party to be at, with more than 100 events citywide. Look no farther than the River Walk to get in on the action. But here in SA, we celebrate everything and keep our “fiestas” going year-round. With parades, mariachis and folklorico performances, you will be singing and dancing along the river banks. Viva Fiesta!

THE RIVER WALK ROYALTY SUPPORTS

SAN ANTONIO HOSPITALITY FOUNDATION

Since 1987, River Walk Royalty have served as ambassadors to the San Antonio River Walk, appearing in events throughout the city. But participation on the royal court requires more than perfecting the royal wave, riding in countless parades and donning a crown. Titles are awarded by each candidate’s fundraising efforts that contribute to Visit San Antonio’s San Antonio Hospitality Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit that awards fall semester scholarships to minority students majoring in tourism, with the purpose to inspire the next generation of San Antonio’s tourism and hospitality leaders. In 2023, Visit San Antonio presented two $28,000 checks to St. Philip’s College and UTSA, and also supports culinary scholarships through the James Beard Foundation.

The 2024 River Walk Royal Court collectively raised $76,000 for the San Antonio Hospitality Foundation and were just crowned at the Mardi

Gras River Parade in February. This, along with other fundraising efforts through Visit San Antonio, will provide scholarships for the 2024/25 school year.

The Texas Cavaliers River Parade

Monday, April 22, 7:00 to 9:00pm

As far as parades go, The Texas Cavaliers River Parade, part of Fiesta San Antonio, is invariably a treat because this parade floats, and what is cooler than that?! Festive music fills the air and vibrant floats pass by as thousands of spectators watch from the banks of the river. What began in 1941 has become a cherished tradition for friends and family. It all started when a band of Texas Cavaliers became entranced by boats and barges decorated with flowers in the “floating gardens” of Mexico City. This so happened to coincide with the San Antonio River Bend restoration, so the Cavaliers thought it would be a great idea to recreate it in the Alamo City, and they were right. Now, over 250,000 people come out each year to enjoy live music and beautifully decorated barges covered in bright flowers and colors. This year’s parade takes place on April 22, and since 1989, funds raised go towards local children’s charities through the Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundation. Ford Mariachi Festival

Tuesday-Thursday, April 23-25, 6:00 to 8:00pm

If you enjoy floats, then the Ford Mariachi Festival is another great Fiesta event to check out. This year’s three-day event takes place on April 23-25 on the Downtown River Walk and is free to attend.

This is the perfect time to dine riverside or grab a margarita or ice cold beer (you can now have open containers on the River Walk) and take in the sounds and sights of this music festival. River barges filled with talented Mariachi bands as well as folklorico dancers from local schools, dressed in traditional attire, float by as you sit back and relax or stand up and dance along with them. This beloved event started in 1972, and we plan to keep dancing and singing until the river runs dry.

Fiesta River Walk Artisan Show

Art enthusiasts should mark their calendars for the Fiesta Artisan Show, which takes place directly on the River Walk near the Chamber of Commerce and Shops at Rivercenter from April 26-28. This unique event allows you to experience the beauty of the River Walk while exploring stunning handmade artwork from more than 40 different artisans. Shop for jewelry, pottery, textiles, paintings, woodwork, beadwork and more, and the best part is it is free to attend.

Fiesta Noche del Rio

Arneson River Theatre

It is vibrant! It is lively! It is for a good cause! Now in its 67th season, Fiesta Noche del Rio is lighting up the Arneson River Theatre once again. The show began in 1957 on the River Walk, and it has been a staple ever since. San Antonio’s “First Lady of Song,” Rosita Fernandez, was the original performer who dazzled hundreds of thousands of patrons. Since then, the show has continued to take on new life each year under the direction of Elizabeth “Lisa” Sanchez-Lopez and now Katie Rodriguez Hall.

This iconic cultural performance along the banks of the river is an artistic blend of colorful costumes, talented dancers and the sound of San Antonio’s deep musical roots. On Friday and Saturday evenings, the Arneson comes to life, and proceeds from the event have helped raise more than $2.85 million for disadvantaged children in San Antonio through the Alamo Kiwanis Club. Cool down on the River Walk with refreshing drinks, and indulge in the delectable tastes that make San Antonio the Culinary Capital of Texas!

Did you know that if it were not for a puppet show, the River Walk as we know it today would not even exist? That’s right! In 1926, The Conservation Society of San Antonio got creative by putting on a puppet show for the city commissioners and taking them on canoe rides in order to convince them that the river was worth saving. It was a success, and they started building the River Walk in 1939 under the direction of architect Robert H. H. Hugman. Over the years, many projects spearheaded by influential San Antonians contributed to the River Walk development, with major expansion in the ‘60s leading to HemisFair ’68.

Now, the River Walk is one of the top destinations in the country and truly the best place to dine outside on an array of restaurant patios. In fact, Casa Rio was the first River Walk restaurant to open in 1946, and its introduction of canoes, gondolas and paddle boats evolved into the tour and dinner boats you see now. Today, there are a multitude of tasty cuisines available all along this labyrinthine stretch of river, with some right on the banks and others elevated for outstanding views. If you are looking to find the perfect locale for a bite or sip on the river, just wander along the River Walk and dine at any of the lovely restaurant patios lining the banks.

Due to the positioning of the River Walk below street level, it actually exhibits its own microclimate and is typically five to seven degrees cooler than anywhere else in downtown San Antonio. Cooler temps provide a pleasant al fresco dining experience!

The Original Mexican Restaurant

Located directly along the River Walk near E. Commerce Street, The Original Mexican Restaurant is one of the oldest restaurants on the river. A restaurant by the same name was actually founded in 1899 across the river on Losoya Street but closed in 1960. In 1988, the new owners were granted permission to use the name, and it became the third Mexican restaurant to open on the economically revived Paseo del Rio. To this day, it still features a menu of traditional dishes of Old Mexico, with a patio that lines the River Walk, offering a front row view of barges and friendly ducks. So, grab a couple of margaritas and a satisfying plate of cheesy enchiladas, and top it off with their signature cheesecake!

With a gorgeous elevated rooftop bar that overlooks the River Walk, both spaces are perfect to settle in for a long happy hour with small bites or festive night with friends and family. They are also a favorite for all kinds of special events from bachelorette parties to anniversaries, especially if you are looking for someplace elegant with a lovely cityscape view.

Open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and drinks, the menus are a modern tribute to South Texas cuisine. They also have fun features throughout the week like an ironic “Tequila Fridays” on Mondays, and “Cantarito Bowls” on Thursdays (the name of the clay cups in which the drinks are served). Dig into a spectrum of scrumptious offerings from their fish tacos made with crispy halibut to luscious short rib quesadillas and the ever-popular green chile and chicken enchiladas.

Ostra

Located within Mokara Hotel, the patio at Ostra also overlooks San Antonio’s number one tourist attraction, providing the ultimate romantic riverfront rendezvous spot in town. This Signature AAA Four Diamond seafood restaurant led by Executive Chef Andres Farias features a delectable menu highlighting sustainable seafood and exotic dishes, as well as an Oyster Bar with fresh-caught oysters, crab, shrimp and ceviche. Recently awarded Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence, you should also plan to peruse the eclectic wine list and specialty tequilas and mezcals.

Carriqui

Though not riverside, Carriqui is one of the newest offerings in the Historic Pearl District, located on the Museum Reach of the River Walk. It is simply divine, from the menu to the service and especially the environment. It is worth a visit just to see this beautiful historic building, built in the 1890s, which was once a popular watering hole called Boehler’s Liberty Saloon, and enjoy a special moment on their expansive patio.

Chef Jaime Gonzalez is at the helm of Carriqui, serving up a menu that blends old and new, focusing on ingredients and flavors that showcase South Texas cuisine, from smoked brisket to Texas gulf shrimp and smoked country fried quail with chow chow, corn cake and local honey. It is an exceptional choice for a lazy Saturday or Sunday brunch of chilaquiles and micheladas!

For the ultimate outdoor dining experience, the River Walk’s annual Stella Artois Drift & Dine event promises a night to remember as you enjoy some of your favorite River Walk restaurants and undoubtedly discover new ones as you cruise the river on a colorful decorated barge and take in the breathtaking sights and sounds of our one-of-a kind downtown. It is a floating patio in the city!

Stella Artois Drift & Dine guests will get the opportunity to nosh on dishes from six fantastic River Walk restaurants — a different line-up every night. This is a wonderful opportunity to discover new restaurants or revisit beloved icons while slowly drifting along the scenic River Walk with your favorite person (or people). Texas Wildflower Season on the River Walk

Wildflower season is here in Texas, which means you can spot bluebonnets and other colorful flowers blooming in the countryside, lining the highways, and even along the River Walk! Peak bluebonnet blooming season is late March through late April, but dozens of other colorful wildflowers begin bursting with color in early March and continue through summer.

The downtown stretch of the River Walk is known more for Prickly Pear Margaritas than bluebonnets, but its position below street level is typically cooler and boasts an array of unusual plants that thrive in the microclimate. The Mission Reach and sections of the Museum Reach

also offer true sanctuaries for nature lovers, filled with lush foliage, wildlife and Texas’ beloved state blossoms. We are sharing the best blooming spots on the river, from downtown’s urban gardens to the sprawling lawns of the historic Missions.

River Walk Public Art Garden

Located steps past the Torch of Friendship and Shops at Rivercenter, the River Walk Public Art Garden offers a peaceful garden stroll in the heart of the hustle and bustle. This outdoor museum showcases the city’s newest public art displays and marks the gateway to San Antonio’s art scene. While there are plenty of blossoming flowers to enjoy along the way, you will want to stop and smell the art when you find “Bloom.” A collection of towering Yellow Columbine and Lantana flowers, the “Bloom” series by San Antonio artist Leticia Huerta gives you a new perspective on nature. Next to these giant flowers, you will get an idea of what it is like to be a butterfly or a ladybug in the garden! Make sure to keep a lookout for other popular installations like Stargazer. Mexican artist Pedro Reyes carved this piece from volcanic rock to form a woman who appears to be gazing at the stars. (But we think she may also be looking for wildflowers!)

Japanese Tea Garden

A few miles north of downtown, you will find the Japanese Tea Garden not too far from the banks of the Museum Reach stretch of the River Walk. Located in historic Brackenridge Park, this lush garden sits on the former spot of an abandoned rock quarry. After the quarry closed operation in 1908, the site presented challenges for park leadership. The solution: transform the quarry into a meditative garden with winding paths, a lily pond and a towering waterfall. Completed in the 1920s, the site now features a popular koi pond, an overlook pavilion, towering bamboo and plenty of colorful flowers along the paths. A testament to the city’s limestone quarrying history and cultural diversity, the garden is now designated as a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places. Visit for an afternoon stroll and even stop at the tea house on the upper crest to take in the view with a refreshment in hand.

Light Up Flower Garden

While some flowers need sunlight, the blooms at the Light Up Flower Garden thrive at night. Tucked away in The Grotto, steps under the Henry B. González Convention Center on the Downtown River Walk, you will find an illuminated display of giant, colorful blooms. The Flower Garden art installation twinkles in the night for a larger-than-life experience that will delight art and nature lovers alike.

Mission Reach Wildflowers

Now, the best way to get a glimpse of the Texas wildflowers during peak bloom is on the Mission Reach where you will find the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. The Mission Reach comprises the southern end of the San Antonio River Walk, and is home to four of the five UNESCO World Heritage Site Missions — the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Texas.

From north to south, Mission Concepción, Mission San José, Mission San Juan and Mission Espada are connected by the Mission Trail, with approximately 2.5 miles between each Mission. Admission at all four Missions within the Park is free. If you are not one to stop and smell the roses, you can take in the sights faster on a rented Bcycle electric bike. Slower? Rent a kayak from Mission Adventure Tours and enjoy the view from a different perspective. You can find a great map from the San Antonio River Authority, with tips for whichever sight-seeing preference you choose. Either way, be sure to bring along plenty of water!

You can also hike the entire 20-mile trail — known as the El Camino de San Antonio Missions, which includes San Fernando Cathedral in downtown San Antonio and continues along the Mission Trail. It is a refreshing break from the hustle and bustle, and a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in San Antonio’s history and culture. Stops along the Trail:

San Fernando Cathedral - the oldest continuously functioning Cathedral in the United States.

Mission Concepción - completed in 1755, it is the oldest unrestored stone church in the United States.

Mission San José - over 300 years old and one of the most active parishes in South San Antonio.

Mission San Juan - nestled near the San Antonio River, it provided all the Missions with water for their crops through an innovative series of water canals built by the Mission Indians.

Mission Espada - the smallest and oldest of the Missions, dating back to 1691, it is home to a crucifix containing a second-class relic of Saint John Paul II.

FUN FACT

The El Camino de San Antonio Missions is a pilgrimage in partnership with Spain’s El Camino de Santiago de Compostela. Visit the Padre Margil Pilgrimage Center near Mission Concepción to obtain an official passport and start collecting stamps from each site to receive 30km in credits when walking the Camino Ingles route to Santiago de Compostela in Spain! Many pilgrims divide their walk over several days, allowing time for reflection.

Hugman, this spot has earned a reputation as San Antonio’s go-to spot for tiki. Enjoy a Mai Tai, Jungle Bird or Painkiller garnished with fresh tropical flowers from your own private tiki hut.

Margaritaville

Are you ready to be wastin' away again in Margaritaville? Head to the islands to the tune of Jimmy Buffett without walking any further than the Shops at Rivercenter. Margaritaville offers a beachy vibe complete with palm leaves, hibiscus flowers and a waterside view from every table. Chow down on lyrical favorites like the Cheeseburger in Paradise and wash it down with a signature margarita.

Rainforest Cafe

Now, the next spot on the list is a wild place to eat that delights both kids and adults!! The Rainforest Cafe actually comes alive with the sights and sounds of the jungle! Kick back with fan favorites like the Rasta Pasta, Rainforest Burger and, of course, the Volcano Cake!

What is better than one good restaurant concept?

How about three, or five, or maybe more, all in one location?!

In recent years, most likely thanks to the success of the Pearl Food Hall, we have seen the rise of food collaboratives in San Antonio. These food hubs are a smart response to the shifting dynamic of diners who are looking for options where they can bring friends and family with diverse palates for a variety of good eats that are affordable and can easily be enjoyed on-site or to-go. They span the gamut from fast casual to high concept, and in no way resemble food courts in malls!

Pearl Food Hall

The Pearl Food Hall at the Bottling Department in the Historic Pearl District has definitely set the bar for such food collaborations, providing a space where hungry locals and out-of-town visitors can find a plethora of delicious options all in one spot. These quick-serve concepts are an easy choice when you want a fast, yummy bite.

Currently, the Food Hall, which is open seven days a week, is home to Wonder Slice (pizza), Howdy Child (BBQ), Chilaquil (Mexican street food), Henbit (smash burgers, shakes and fries), Park Bar (beer, cocktails and frozen drinks) and the newly-opened Freight Fried Chicken , brought to us by James Beard Award-nominated chef, Nicola Blaque. Unless it is blazin’ hot, your meal can best be enjoyed outside, where you will find an abundance of patio tables, or you can simply popa-squat and have an impromptu picnic on the lawn. Although the weekends are often packed, it is also the only time you can get in on the live food vendors that pop up for the Pearl Farmers and Makers Markets that take place every Saturday and Sunday. The markets only showcase vendors who are located within a 150-mile radius of San Antonio, in order to promote sustainability and the local food movement. The options range from long-time vendors such as the Beignet Stand and Crepelandia to favorites like The Texas Cookie Shop and Lala’s Gorditas.

Located near the Historic Pearl District, across Hwy. 281 from Brackenridge Park Golf Course and along the Museum Reach of the River Walk, The Creamery District is the new mixed-use building in San Antonio’s Tobin Hill neighborhood. The facility, which will ultimately house five food and beverage concepts, apartments and office space, is already welcoming guests to Crème Coffee Social, Hook Land & Sea and Amelia Social Lounge

Crème, which was the first concept to open, is a seductive coffee lounge that they compare to the coffee houses of Europe and offers not only coffee and tea, but bubbles, light bites and dessert. It is a great place for a meet cute! Hook Land & Sea, a full-service restaurant, offers fusion cuisine focused on Asian, Mexican and other international flavors with dishes that range from Mezcal Mussels and a crispy cod Chicharron Bowl to a Chicken Banh Mi and Quesabirria made with smoked beef cheek that is mouthwatering.

The third concept, Amelia, is named after the most renowned Amelia in history — Amelia Earhart. This trendy social lounge and gathering spot comes with a bar, patio and tasty tributes to its namesake. Imbibe classic cocktails like the New York Sour and Classic Gin Martini or eclectic inventions like the Jungle Bird, Aviation and Tequila Daisy, along with nibbles that include citrus-cured smoked salmon, roasted dates and assorted deviled eggs.

The last two concepts will be Lunatique Rooftop Garden at Amelia, the perfect place to sip those signature cocktails by Amelia, and Easy Baby Underground, a swanky speakeasy that will be serving up cocktails and caviar, along with pizza, all curated to some groovy ‘80s and ‘90s tunes spun by house DJs.

Pullman Market

The Emmer & Rye Hospitality Group announced at the end of 2023 that the largest culinary market in the Southwest, Pullman Market, is set to open in the Historic Pearl District this spring.

The whopping 40,000-square-foot market will feature four full-service restaurants as well as quick casual concepts, a whole animal butcher and fishmonger program, a heritage grain bakery and a grocery with Texas produce and seasonal specialties. What more could you ask for?

Tobin Center for the Performing Arts

Named for Robert L. B. Tobin, one of the city's most prominent residents, the Tobin Center opened in the 1920s as the city’s Municipal Auditorium — a memorial to American soldiers killed in WWI. Since then, it has been transformed into a state-of-the-art venue, but the original facade has been completely preserved. The Majestic Theatre was built in 1929 and was designed as an “atmospheric theatre” in a Spanish Mediterranean style by John Eberson. In its heyday, it was the crown jewel of the city, and the first theatre in America that was fully air-conditioned! Since then, it achieved landmark status in 1993, with its remarkable architecture that always wows visitors. And it continues to delight audiences with Broadway shows and live performances.

San Antonio’s First Neighborhood Shines Again

Nestled in the heart of downtown San Antonio lies one square, art-filled block of the city’s cultural heritage and history. This is La Villita — the village. Beautifully restored historic buildings, now housing some of the city’s most popular artists and artisans, line the old brick paths. Lush plantings and shady plazas with cool fountains offer a retreat from the noise and bustle of a thriving, constantly changing downtown. You may come upon it from the River Walk, where the Arneson River Theatre and Rosita’s Bridge mark stairs up to the “little village.” Or from busy Alamo Street, across from Hemisfair Park and the Convention Center.

Early Settlements

The first occupants of the area were Native Americans who settled by the life-giving river. Then came Spanish soldiers and Catholic friars, bringing the Spanish crown and the cross. The friars founded a mission, and soldiers and their Native American wives built simple adobe homes and small farm plots around it. These were the common people, and their village was on the “poor side” of the river, connected by a single bridge. Eventually the wrong side of the river fell into disrepair. Crumbling adobes and wood shacks were abandoned. A major flood drove new San Antonians to build on La Villita’s higher ground.

By 1820, the Spanish empire was stalling out in Texas, unable to convince enough people to colonize the rugged territory. They found a solution in American and European entrepreneurs who brought new settlements from their homelands. When Mexico won its independence, it continued the practice. But some new Texans chafed under Mexico’s rules, and the seeds of the Texas Revolution were sewn. In 1835, Mexico’s President, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, sent his brother-in-law, General Martin Perfecto de la Cos, to San Antonio to quash the uprising. Cos took a home on Villita Street for his headquarters. In 1835, after five days of fierce fighting, Cos flew a white flag from the walls of the Alamo and signed formal articles of surrender in the La Villita home. The Cos House, a long, low-ceilinged little adobe house with thick walls and few windows, is the oldest building in La Villita today. A vengeful Santa Anna marched with tens of thousands of soldiers and overran the rebels at the Alamo, but the Texans won the war, and the Republic of Texas was born.

New Neighbors

By the 1840s, a wave of German immigrants from colonies like New Braunfels arrived in San Antonio. Some settled in La Villita, where they fixed up the old homes with new plaster and mortar, and added steep-pitched roofs and well-tended gardens. A few French, Polish and other European families followed. By the late 1850s, La Villita was home to an eclectic mix of Old-World civility amid pockets of poverty.

In 1910, a wave of refugees from the Mexican Revolution began arriving in San Antonio, and some settled in La Villita. But by 1939, the neighborhood had become what Mayor Maury Maverick called "the worst slum I ever saw." Maverick, a political powerhouse and visionary, made a mission of rescuing the historic village. With help from the influential Conservation Society of San Antonio and others, and money and manpower from FDR's Works Progress Administration, La Villita was reborn as a living center of traditional Mexican arts and culture. Workshops staffed by talented artisans taught young San Antonians classic Mexican tile-making, carpentry, wrought iron and metalsmithing, weaving and more. Arts and music filled the little lanes and squares, and the sounds of creation were always present. La Villita was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Over the years the workshops gave way to a few studios and stores. Festivals still took place there, but neglect began to take its toll. In 2014, city leaders and the arts community were determined to breathe new life into Mayor Maverick's vision of an arts renaissance in La Villita.

Arts, Culture and Hearts

Today, local and area artists and craftsmen are carefully vetted as tenants in La Villita. Their mission: to offer arts and crafts, culture and educational experiences to visitors.

There is a culinary arts element to La Villita, too. La Villita Café, Guadalajara Grill, Casa Catrina, Little Rhein Prost House and Smoke BBQ offer a wide variety, from lunch snacks to fine dining. San Antonio chef Johnny Hernandez has three restaurants planned in Maverick Plaza.

In unique boutiques like Casa Manos Alegres, Huipil Market, Plaza Taxco, Copper Gallery, Scentchips and the Capistrano Soap Company, you may find artists and craftsmen at work. On Wednesdays, Karen McCauley paints and greets visitors to The Little Studio Gallery, where several artists are partners. The River Art Gallery, featuring many other artists, is nearby.

"People really love coming here," McCauley said. "They are on a river boat and the guide will say, 'Oh yeah, you have to go up there,' or they discover us just wandering around. They love the history, the shops and the buildings. It is not like a sterile city building with big glass walls. They are these little antique funny doors and windows that are always creaking. And you think about how the French and German people came to settle here after the Alamo."

"This is like a gem in the middle of the city," said La Villita manager Vanessa Martinez. "When my co-workers come to a meeting here, they are, 'Wow! It is so peaceful, so cozy to be in this space, like you are stepping back in time.'"

"La Villita is shaping itself to become a beautiful venture that sets a standard — a destination point of arts, culture and hearts," said metalsmith and jeweler Alejandro Sifuentes, whose Equinox Gallery and Sifuentes Metalsmith sit side-by-side in historic buildings. "There is a charm and a magic here. It is like no other place in San Antonio, because of the story."

Sifuentes said a historian told him that his buildings housed a kitchen that fed the village when Santa Anna came to take the Alamo. "People want a story — an experience," Sifuentes said. "They want to take home something that is a labor of love, that reminds them of the magic of living."

You can sample La Villita's experiences in many different ways, Martinez said, including free craft nights and dancing lessons on two Tuesdays a month. In April, the Arneson River Theatre is packed for the Texas Cavalier's River Parade, and La Villita goes crazy during the Conservation Society's Night In Old San Antonio during Fiesta®. Fiesta Noche del Rio, a summer-long dance spectacular, opens at the Arneson River Theatre in early June.
