ON THE COVER Mission San José—known as the “Queen of the Missions”—is the largest of San Antonio’s five missions and was almost fully restored in the 1930s by the WPA. In the 18th century, Spanish priests established the five Catholic missions along the San Antonio River. Today, Mission San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo), Mission San José, Mission Concepción, Mission San Juan and Mission Espada represent the largest concentration of Spanish colonial missions in North America and have been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. 2022 marks the 7th anniversary of the World Heritage Festival, September 7-11. The Festival is spread throughout the five missions and surrounding area and has something for everyone. www.WorldHeritageFestival.org

But did you know that had it not been for the foresight of Alfred F. Beyer, owner of Casa Rio, the first restaurant to open on the River Walk in 1946, these floating barges might not have come about? Beyer is responsible for dinner boats and river tours that evolved from canoes, paddle boats and gondolas in the early ‘50s.

Trisha Hutzler Editor, Rio trisha@travelingblender.comMagazine

Strolling the beautiful San Antonio River Walk any time of day is a lovely experience, but add in illuminated floats viewed from a riverside restaurant while enjoying a delicious meal and icy margaritas and, well, it does not get any better. Fortunately, there are festive River Parades almost every month along the River Walk, and in September, the Ford Parade of Lights takes place on two consecutive weekends: September 2-4 and 9-11 from 8:00 to 10:00pm each evening for multiple opportunities to see this spectacular sight.

The menu’s focus here is also seafood with some distinctly elevated touches, such as the most memorable deviled eggs topped with regiis ova royal caviar and gold leaf. These little gems took my breath away. Start your meal out right with one of their sushi options, such as Otoro Nigiri or the Salmon Maki, made with honeydew, sudachi, chives and kosho. Mains range from a Scallop Tagliatelle and Black Cod in a lavender dashi sauce to an aged prime New York Strip.

UP SCALE Head south of downtown to Southtown to discover another new restaurant called Up Scale, which has taken San Antonio by storm. Owned and operated by a phenomenally savvy husband and wife team, Up Scale provides an utterly sexy option in the heart of the arts district.

ALLORA Allora, an Italian restaurant focused on coastal cuisine, has been on everyone’s lips lately, both literally and figuratively. With Chef Robbie Nowlin at the helm, Allora is executing thought and palate-provoking dishes that are virtually Locatedunparalleled.atthe Historic Pearl, it is also one of the newest restaurants in town and a welcome addition after the demise of Il Sogno, a favorite Italian restaurant which previously operated at Pearl. Allora itself is stunning with high ceilings and elegant furnishings, but you will quickly forget your surroundings upon your first bite. The menu seems to always be shifting with new seasonal offerings and Nowlin’s current obsessions. Upon my latest visit, I fell in love with the Chicken Liver Mousse appetizer, served with a crusty house-made bruschetta, cherry jam, charred rosemary and tarragon. Let me just say, I may have swooned a little. They also offer a menu of crudi, sashimigrade seafood, such as striped bass with pistachio, mint and sea salt or ahi tuna with capers, citrus and EVOO. One of the signature dishes is a gorgeously layered lasagna topped with the succulent bounty of an entire lobster, but whatever dish(es) you order, they will undoubtedly be delicious!

You go to Bliss when you want to be guaranteed, not just a great meal, but a divine evening. Their charcuterie, artisanal cheeses and award-winning wine list is a must. Bliss is, in fact, known for their exceptional wine pairings.

Favorite dishes include the crispy fried gulf oyster sliders made with candied bacon, buttermilk chive biscuits, spinach and brown butter hollandaise and a pan-seared beef tenderloin in an au poivre sauce with twice baked potato gratin, blistered shishito peppers, crispy onion rings and braised cauliflower florets.

BLISS Also conveniently located in Southtown is a tried-and-true favorite for contemporary American cuisine—called Bliss for good reason! Restaurateurs, Chef Mark and Lisa Bliss, have built a loyal following over more years than I can count for their consistently superb offerings and service.

Although tacos, burgers and cheap eats may always be popular choices, the San Antonio foodscape abounds with excellent fine dining options for those evenings when you are looking for something special, utterly delightful and magnificently mouth-watering!

Signature is the epitome of traditional fine dining, and you can be sure to enjoy all the expected advantages, from lavish customer service to a perfectly cooked Filet Mignon (served with creamed leeks, spinach and Yukon gold potato fondant) or Duck Breast (served with beets, hibiscus, cabbage and pickled mustard seed).

BIGA ON THE BANKS

Rebelle Biga on the Banks Photo by Allysse Shank-Rivas

Signature’s Executive Chef, John Carpenter, was raised in San Antonio and became a head chef at the young age of 24. The restaurant sources local and organic ingredients, including some items from their own herb garden, offering the freshest, most flavorful dishes. They are also open for happy hour during the week and brunch on Sundays.

Next, Biga on the Banks, located along the River Walk, is another long-standing upscale restaurant that has stood the test of time and now stands soundly on its well-earned success. Biga, which serves “very” New American cuisine, is always a wonderful choice for a celebration, whether it be a birthday or anniversary.

Chef and owner, Bruce Auden, who originally hailed from London, is considered one of the Godfathers of fine dining cuisine in San Antonio and has translated his adventuresome nature into phenomenally creative dishes, such as an 11 Spiced South Texas Antelope and Lockhart Quail dish served with a goat cheese tart, Brussels leaves, chestnuts and apple-berry chutney in a juniper sauce. I recommend the three-course prix fixe to maximize your own adventure at Biga’s. The sticky toffee pudding with English custard is a must-try, even if you have to take it to-go!

REBELLE Finally, smack dab in the heart of downtown, inside the luxurious St. Anthony Hotel, is Rebelle, which claims to be the finest seafood restaurant in town, and we could not really argue. Rebelle takes the word posh to its ultimate intent with decadent décor including a stylish chandelier, fantastical Salvador Dali prints, chic clear acrylic furniture and brilliantly boozy cocktails. As for the menu, the experience gets even more fantastical with jaw-dropping ingredients and a mélange of unexpected flavors. Make your ressies before 6:30 to take advantage of their happy hour specials, including a half dozen char-broiled oysters with caramelized-garlic parmesan butter. Do yourself a favor and order a dozen. Entrees span the gamut from a charbroiled Maine Lobster with garlic confit butter and lobster claw stuffing to blackened drum with a crab jalapeno maque choux and red pepper cream sauce, and the hits just keep coming.

WhatToDo With Your LittleBuckaroo? Enjoy San Antonio’s Premier FriendlyPreschooler-PlaySpots!

By Janis Turk

So, the next time your preschooler needs to blow off a little steam, why not take him or her to places where just being a kid is encouraged? Splash and play away a late-summer day, visit a cool and interesting indoor children’s museum, take your little buckaroo to a cowboy museum/ kid-friendly saloon or enjoy age and sizeappropriate rides at a Kiddie Park. Even if your preschooler is too little to remember it all later, you will keep these memories for a lifetime and they will feel loved.

SESAME STREET BAY OF PLAY AT SEAWORLD® September can still be hot in San Antonio, so cool off with colorful furry friends your kids will instantly recognize and love. This summer, the characters from Sesame Street® are making a splash at the Bay of Play area at SeaWorld San Antonio. Here, rides cater to kiddies and their moms, dads and siblings with ageappropriate water-themed rides, parks and kiddie pools for fun with Sesame Streets’ most beloved characters. The Sesame Street Bay of Play includes three acres of exciting rides and play areas, including Grover’s Round-Up, a colorful carousel, Elmo’s Dolphin Dive, a vertical drop ride (that is not too high or too scary for kids) and Abby Cadabby’s Rocking Wave. Kids can also beat the heat at Little Bird’s Splash. Then capture fun photos with your kids and their Sesame Street friends.

KIDDIE PARK Want to stay closer to downtown? Visit America’s original kiddie amusement park. Established in 1925, San Antonio’s famed Kiddie Park is now located near the entrance to the San Antonio Zoo. Young tots can enjoy fun rides in little kiddie boats, airplanes, trains and a carousel, for starters. You need not go into the Zoo to With my daughter Carrie, the “terrible twos” did not strike until age three. Until then, we could have taken her anywhere and she would have behaved like a doll. She somehow breezed through year two with scarcely a tantrum and we mistakenly thought we had been blessed with that mythical creature all first-time parents hope to have: the perfect kid. Sure, like a unicorn, they are purely imaginary, yet we all still want to believe that somewhere they are out there.

FAMILY FUN enjoy the Kiddie Park, but of course you can add on that excursion for a fun-packed day.

THE DOSEUM

If your little pre-school buckaroo dreams of being a cowboy, there is perhaps no better place to go than the Buckhorn Saloon & Museum. Located downtown just above the River Walk on street level, near Alamo Plaza, it is a family-friendly spot (do not let the “saloon” moniker fool you). Here, preschoolers can nibble on chicken tenders, French fries and other kiddie-friendly eats. Plus, it is a fun place to see mounted taxidermy and all kinds of kitschy cowboy-themed décor. There is an Old West-themed gift store brimming with cowboy hats, T-shirts and other goodies young cowpokes will love. Looking for a Davy Crocket-style coonskin cap and a popgun? This is the place. It is also a museum of Texas history. From the exotic animal collection and The Texas Ranger Museum to the saloon, café and gift shop, this has long been one of downtown San Antonio’s biggest attractions and a fun place for kids of any age.

HOW MAJESTIC!

Las Casas CEO Kaye Lenox said her board is already planning a Majestic centennial celebration in 2029. In preparation, the theatre’s upper balcony will be restored at last. The area, once used for segregated seating of Black patrons, will probably become space for Las Casas’ extensive educational programming, Lenox said.

THE AZTEC Opened in 1926, the Aztec Theatre was a MesoAmerican fantasy, with its grand gilded lobby, ziggurats and pyramids and two-ton chandelier. Inside, bold geometric designs covered the walls and giant statues with glowing red eyes stood by a stage topped with serpents and a Empire Theatre Majestic Theatre

The Majestic Theatre opened in 1929 with fanfare fit for a king. Designed by John Eberson, it was the second-largest theatre in the country—and the first fully air-conditioned one. The over-the-top decor conjured Moorish castles. Imported trees set off a collection of taxidermied birds, including a rare white peacock. Opulent furnishings stood among carved wood and metal shone (much of it cast plaster) shining with gold leaf and brilliantly colored paint. Stars twinkled among drifting clouds in the night-sky ceiling. But the years took their toll, and by 1976 the Majestic closed. Plans to raze it for a parking lot galvanized creation of the Las Casas Foundation, and in 1988 the Majestic reopened, restored to its former glory. That glory takes constant work to maintain, however. The Ambassador Theatre Group, which manages the Majestic and adjacent Empire theatres for Las Casas, recently completed work in the women’s restrooms and bar areas. Fine details are the domain of artist John Coutu. Since 1993, Coutu has been repairing and restoring the Majestic’s paint and plaster, touching up, filling in, brightening and correcting. “I’m trying to get the original colors on the walls, especially since they did the new bar area, to tie in the blues and greens and have it match the carpet design more,” Coutu said. He is also focused on the mezzanine. “It had not been touched up for years,” he said. “I am putting on gold leaf paint, working to see what colors make it pop out. I call it an ‘Oh Wow’ theatre,” Coutu said. “That is what people say when they walk in the lobby.”

GOLDEN EMPIRE The “jewel-box” Empire Theatre shares a backstage wall with the Majestic, its big sister in Las Casas’ Joci Straus Performing Arts Center. The smaller Empire premiered in Beaux Arts glory back in 1914. A huge 1921 flood wiped away most of the gold-leafed glam, but in 1998, after seven years of painstaking restoration, the Empire returned in splendor. Custom millwork, expert plaster work and metallic powders created an exquisite space for smaller productions.

Architect Tim Blonkvist, a founding principal in San Antonio-based Overland Partners, has been involved with plans for the landmark theatre for decades. In 2009, after extensive renovation and a new River Walk entrance, the theatre reopened. Today it is a Live Nation venue. “But we did not know what to do with the rest of the building,” Blonkvist said. Overland came up with two innovative adaptations to the classic building. First came exterior stairs to open the theatre floors outside to a new Crockett Street Overlook—1,500 square feet of airy outdoor space extending from the Aztec’s mezzanine level 20 feet above the River Walk, for theatre patrons and private events. A huge doublesided Aztec-style carved stone head was raised from the River Walk level to the terrace, where it gazes out through the cypress trees. Now, Blonkvist said, plans are approved to reclaim the long-empty office space that wraps around and above the theatre as a unique 75-room boutique hotel, which could open as soon as summer 2023. The project includes expanding the building’s height by 22 feet to create a fantastic, open rooftop bar and restaurant and reception space. That should make for a thrilling centennial for the Aztec in 2026.

golden sunburst. But the splendor turned seedy and the Aztec closed in 1989, and sat dusty through several owners with unrealized dreams.

THE ALAMEDA Last but not least, the Alameda Theater opened on Houston Street in 1949. It was one of the last “grand” movie palaces and the largest ever dedicated to Spanish language films and performing arts. Magnificent black light murals of the histories of Texas and Mexico spanned the interior side walls. Plexiglass, cathode lighting, aluminum lobby sculptures and more created marvelous effects throughout. “That period of architecture, Art Moderne and Deco—was all about glamour, celebrating movement and style, with a deep connection to culture,” said Tim Archer, principal in Overland Partners, which is overseeing the Alameda project. “The Alameda’s uniqueness is Art Deco style combined with Latin themes, something truly unique to San Antonio.” Plans include reducing and raking the theatre seats for better sight lines and multi-use performances, keeping the sweep and “swankiness,” with the accuracy necessary for strict state and federal historic Georginaguidelines.Sperber, a partner in Washington D.C.’s OTJ Architects, is working with Overland on the theatre restoration. “In Phase I they did all the building basics, systems in the ground, infrastructure… Phase 2 is the exciting part, where the beautiful stuff comes in—seats, carpet, beautiful drapes and materials and all the decorative finishes,” she said. Design experts are even putting the phosphorescent paints of the murals under the microscope, to match colors exactly, while modern lighting techniques can recreate and further glamorize the look of everything from inside to the magnificent Alameda marquee. The completion date isn’t set yet, but the Alameda remains another movie palace premiere well worth the wait.

Fiume - San Antonio’s Newest Pizzeria and Wine Bar

The word Fiume, which in English means river, was also once a city in Italy known as a cultural melting pot in the height of its existence. Similarly, the San Antonio River is the core of our dynamic and diverse city. The bustling, vibrant and colorful sidewalks along our Historic River Walk are full of rich diversity and lend itself to the only riverfront fire-oven pizza restaurant in San Antonio.

FIUME [fyoo-me] Pizzeria and Wine Bar is San Antonio’s newest Texassourced and inspired restaurant on the San Antonio River Walk led by Chef de Cuisine, Jessica Makdisi. Fiume’s vision and menu is exemplary of an elevated dining experience revered for its deep local roots and hyperlocal culinary craftsmanship. The artisan, Texas-crafted pizza incorporates local flavors that highlight Neapolitan-style pizza in what they define as Texapoletana Nestled alongside the bustling sidewalks of downtown San Antonio near the Arneson River Theatre, you cannot miss its signature Ferrari-red Fiero oven located on the open-air patio. Fiume’s menu proudly showcases local vendors, wineries and breweries, farms and other partners that exemplify the unique legacy of Texas. You will find dispersed throughout the menu these offerings that provide a sample of the culinary excellence our state exudes. They are inspired daily by the city, people and resources that surround them and strive to showcase them to locals and visitors alike. Texas-sourced menu highlights include hydroponically grown True Harvest lettuces topped with Zesty Texas olive oil, Texas Heat Pizza—made with a combination of Texas smoked bacon and Italian sweet peppers, and for dessert, homemade gelato featuring local berries. Chef Jessica found her love for cooking with her family in Pennsylvania. At the age of 16 she moved to San Antonio to begin her culinary journey. Prior to Fiume, Chef Jessica worked at several local San Antonio restaurants. Chef Jessica takes the basic inspiration and baking processes from the authentic Neapolitan pizza and pushes the flavors in new and exciting directions highlighting Texas ingredients. A unique type of wild yeast is utilized in each hand-crafted pizza at Fiume.

The starter yeast was cultivated in the first months of the pandemic and since then, this fermented “mother” gives the dough a natural, deep yeast flavor where commercial yeast lacks. The inception of the restaurant concept behind Fiume is as unique as the production of the dough utilized in the crafting of every pizza. Opening hours will be 7 days a week from 5:00pm-10:00pm at 200 S Alamo St, San Antonio, TX 78205 on the river level. Or enjoy a beautiful Texas sunset in the lush courtyard with its sparkling pool. Located just minutes from premier shopping, dining and tourist destinations, Estancia Del Norte might be located in the heart of the city, but it feels like it is worlds away.

From light bites to hearty meals and craft cocktails, there is something to satisfy every tastebud. For those who crave a full dining-room experience, LAZO With Don Strange offers many of the Don Strange classics that made the catering giant a house hold name across Texas.

CELEBRATE When celebration is your motto, delivering it is our mission. Pro viding Texas Hospitality is Estancia Del Norte’s calling card, and they do it in a way that celebrates community—and nothing says community like local arts and artisans. Art is the heartbeat of a city, and in a city as colorful as San Antonio, it is an integral part of life. From the local artisans whose textiles, candles, jewelry and foods line the shelves of the boutique gift shop to the art gallery featuring local established and emerging artists, it is easy for guests to immerse themselves in the culture of the Alamo City. CARE Creating community inside and outside the hotel is a driving force at Estancia Del Norte and the impetus for the program, “Estancia Cares.” Each month, Paseo Bar features a signature cocktail for a designated nonprofit and donates a portion of the proceeds to the organization. Guests can feel good knowing their dollars are going towards supporting organizations that make San Antonio one of the most popular destinations in Texas.

DITCH YOUR PLANS San Antonio’s Mission Trail is rich with history of the region, and one of the coolest features is captured in the system of acequias. These irrigation ditches were built using Native American labor to deliver water from the San Antonio River to the missions and farmlands. The mission locations were chosen because of their proximity to the river and these water systems gave life to the people there. The Espada Aqueduct is considered the system’s most remarkable feature and you can access it through the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.

Fall in love with the history of San Antonio with a threeday tour of the town. We will explore the city’s rich roots along the river, as well as a stop at the missions and of course a tasty trip into the past with some of the most flavorful dining spots the Alamo City has to offer.

A TASTE OF THE PAST Every stone in the Guenther House is a piece of San Antonio history. The historic building that houses this popular breakfast spot was crafted using local materials by Carl Hilmar Guenther in the 1800s. Start with a plate of Pioneer biscuits and gravy, then wander over to the museum to get your fill of memorabilia.

SOUTHTOWN VIBES Bike over from King William to the arts district in Southtown to park it for a while. The bronze figures outside the Bexar County Courthouse represent the four founding communities of the city—the Native Americans, Franciscan friars, Presidio soldiers and Canary Islanders. Laredo artist Armando Hinojosa created this installation and it sits as a reminder of the area’s diverse roots in the heart of the city. ON A MISSION What would a historic tour of San Antonio be without a stop at its most wellknown church—The Alamo. If you have never gone inside, it is worth a peek. To stand inside the church is to feel the presence of the city’s famous defenders, but outside, you can stroll along the Long Barrack, which is actually the Alamo’s oldest building. The warm bread and perfect Old-World pasta are a filling experience for the belly and the soul. Toast over the lobster ravioli or a heaping plate of pork osso bucco.

San Fernando is a cathedral by day and a living history art installation by night. While the sun is out, tour the breathtaking interior of this massive historic cathedral, constructed in 1738 by colonists from the Canary Islands. It is said that James Bowie was married there and Gen. Santa Anna laid his plans there for the Alamo siege. Then, on Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, The Saga comes to life. This vibrant history of San Antonio is projected onto the 7,000-square-foot facade of the building, taking visitors on a 24-minute outdoor visual journey from early settlement to present day.
