THE VOYAGER Golden recordS
THE OF the COVER cover of THE VOYAGER Golden recordS
THE golden record attached to the spacecraft
A kind of time capsule, intended to communicate to extraterrestrials a story of the world of humans on Earth. “ This is a present from a small, distant world, a token of our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts and our feelings. We are attempting to survive our time so we may live into yours. U.S. president Jimmy Carter
The contents of the record were selected for NASA by a committee chaired by Carl Sagan of Cornell University. Sagan and his associates assembled 116 images and a variety of natural sounds, such as those made by surf, wind, thunder and animals (including the songs of birds and whales). To this they added musical selections from different cultures and eras, spoken greetings in 55 ancient and modern languages, and printed messages from US president Jimmy Carter and U.N. Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim.
The collection of images includes many photographs and diagrams both in black and white and color. The first images are of scientific interest, showing mathematical and physical quantities, the Solar System and its planets, DNA, and human anatomy and reproduction. Care was taken to include not only pictures of humanity, but also some of animals, insects, plants and landscapes. Images of humanity depict a broad range of cultures. These images show food, architecture, and humans in portraits as well as going about their dayto-day lives. Many pictures are annotated with one or more indications of scales of time, size, or mass. Some images contain indications of chemical composition. All measures used on the pictures are defined in the first few images using physical references that are likely to be consistent anywhere in the universe.
The musical selection is also varied, featuring artists such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Stravinsky, Guan Pinghu, Blind Willie Johnson, Chuck Berry, Kesarbai Kerkar and Valya Balkanska. After NASA had received criticism over the nudity on the Pioneer plaque (line drawings of a naked man and woman), the agency chose not to allow Sagan and his colleagues to include a photograph of a nude man and woman on the record. Instead, only a silhouette of the couple was included. However, the record does contain "Diagram of vertebrate evolution", by Jon Lomberg, with drawings of an anatomically correct naked male and naked female, showing external organs. The pulsar map and hydrogen molecule diagram are shared in common with the Pioneer plaque. The 116 images are encoded in analogue form and composed of 512 vertical lines. The remainder of the record is audio, designed to be played at 16â…” revolutions per minute.
HUMAN EXPERIENCES CULTURE AND RELIGION There are many different cultures and religions on earth which havent been shown in the voyager golden record and for many people these topics are very important and widespread throughout the world.
SEMIOTICS AND SYMBOLISM
There are lots of different types of symbols and signs on earth which any human knows as they have lived with it for there whole life if an alien were to come to earth they might find thes symbols and signs difficult to learn as they wont know some of the equipment and technology on earth. A giude to the symbols would be very helpful for aliens to suvive on earth.
HUMAN EMOTIONS
On earth another experience humans have to endure is emotions throughout the whole day every day as long as they live as each human has a consceince and each produce emotions like anger, upset, happiness, anxious. These need to be explained t aliens as they might be robotic and if they were to live on earth they would be confused by peoples reactions. so i could create a giiude or video to show human emotion which is not on the golden voyager record.
ELEMENTS AND MATERIALS
There are lots of elements and materials on earth these are unknown to any other world in the universe. so i thought without these materials man would not of been what its like today. the voyager golden record has elements on it but not materials like bubble wrap, it also fails to give samples. so book of textures would be really good for this sort of thing to show the natural and man made materials on earth.
IDEA 1 To create a book of materials, which will provide textures and samples of each thing, so unlike the voyager golden record you can touch it and know what it looks like with your eyes. This culd be turned into a sample slider sheets.
ARTIST RESEARCH
Suprematism, 18th Construction 1915 | Oil on canvas | 530 x 530 mm Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam Malevich, Kazimir | 1878-1935
grant wiggins: minimalism artwork used paint on canvases, this minimal simple look would be perfect for my book of materials and textures.
Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan: Nationality: Dutch , ment: De Stijl
Known for: Painting, Move-
again the simplicity but using simple shapes is another inspiring way to set out my work.
IDEA 2 To create a video on after effects showing the human emotions such as love, anger, sadness and happiness. I would use illustration to create charcters faces, the earth, a man and a woman and a baby.
ARTIST RESEARCH I have looked at roy lichtenstein and andy warhol to see how the expression is portrayed by the illustrated face.
IDEA 3 This idea is to create a poster or video of the good and bad things of humanity to show both sides of the story. I will use infographics to help myself to display this idea of good and bad.
ARTIST RESEARCH
Mikey Burton uses infographics to create interesting information filled images.
Socket Studios graphic design. I love the way it uses simple objects to create a bigger picture.
IDEA DEVELOPMENT 1
IDEA 2: DEVELOPMENT
I have used illustrator to create some of the images i would use in my video about human emotions it would start with the earth showing then zooming in onto the human and then the humans face. I would use the faces i have created on the next page to show different emotions.
IDEA 3 DEVELOPMENT GOOD THINGS
BAD THINGS
health technology love youth freedom imagination creativeness activities places
poverty deforestation hunting war hate racism death crime illness
BAD THINGS
GOOD THINGS
CANVA STYLE EXPERIMENTS I have used a website called canva that allows you to create infographic layouts and posters. i decided that they werent that useful but as part of my development were important.
IDEA 3 FURTHER RESEARCH
Cornwall by design “The Dot” has inspired me on my own ideas for my own posters. I like the use of shapes to con-
tain each different fact. This makes each fact clear and readable.
Jack Hagley
These images show some work of Hagley, these have inspied me to use lines to show what fact belongs to what picture or visual representative and also to use
different type alignments and to use some sort of colour schemem to make the information easier to look at.
IDEA 3 FURTHER DEVELOPMENT I have used Adobe Illustrator to create parts of my poster ideas and create mock ups, experimenting with layout and type.
IDEA 3 FINAL DESIGN’S Through research and experimentation i have created thes final posters for the earth artifact project to display the goodand bad things on earth that we experience in our lives. i used illastrator to create an interesting way to display information so it doesnt look boring but it must look proffesional and clear.
