LOURDES ALUMNI AND FRIENDS • SPRING - SUMMER 2020
Dear Lourdes Alumni, As each of us has faced new challenges over the past few months and “adjusted” to a new way of life, we are constantly inspired and amazed by our Lourdes community. We have seen how our faculty and students have met the challenge of online learning and the results have been amazing! Our teachers have risen to the occasion, and with limited time and preparation met the challenges involved with remote teaching. Our students persevered and our parents have worked hard to juggle their work and personal lives.
Almighty and Eternal God, our refuge in every danger, to whom we turn in our distress; in faith we pray look with compassion on the afflicted, grant eternal rest to the dead, comfort to mourners, healing to the sick, peace to the dying, strength to healthcare workers, wisdom to our leaders, and the courage to reach out to all in love, so that together we may give glory to your holy name. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen

Perhaps what has been most challenging during this time has been maintaining the physical distancing requirements while staying socially connected. Our community thrives on being together, supporting one and other in times of celebration and special moments. Even though we are still experiencing limited time together we are proud that we have found new ways to create community. From on-line Spirit Week to sharing photos of elementary students with their baked goods for “Muffins with Moms” to celebrating our Seniors with a city-wide cruise and drive-in movie style presentation of the traditional Senior Slideshow, Lourdes Central Catholic has learned to adapt and overcome! Outside of our school walls, many of our alumni are doing their share to take care of the community as well. I have heard many stories of our alumni on the frontlines, those who are risking their own health to take care of others. Some are sharing inspiration through social media while others are providing comfort and meaning as clergy members. We are so proud of our graduates who are taking our school’s values and applying them in their lives. We cannot ask for more. We at Lourdes Central Catholic proudly stand behind you and look forward to opening our school doors in the fall and welcoming you back. Until that time, we pray for your health and safety. Listed below is just a small portion of first responders, alumni who provide us with support both physically and emotionally. Thank you so much for your continued love and support.

Lourdes Central Catholic honored its graduating class by hosting a Senior Salute parade and Senior Video, held “drive-in” style, on Sunday, May 17, 2020, in lieu of a traditional graduation ceremony scheduled for that day due to ongoing COVID restrictions. Graduating seniors decorated their cars and greeted Lourdes supporters who lined the route! Following the Senior Salute, graduates, their families, and the Lourdes Community gathered at Lourdes Central Catholic to view the Senior Video “drive-in” style, projected against the school building followed by closing words and a blessing by Father Ryan Salisbury. A traditional graduation ceremony is being planned for August 2020, when COVID-19 restrictions are to be eased.
The spring was different than what we had planned, but you all showed incredible spirit, strength and faith. The entire St. Bernard’s/Lourdes Central Catholic Alumni Association, our administration, faculty and staff wish you congratulations on your graduation! You have achieved so much: academic achievement, leadership skills, volunteer contributions to the community, and caring for one another. We couldn’t be prouder of each of you!. Wherever your paths take you, know that you have been strengthened by this challenge and come out of it stronger.
WELCOME TO THE ST. BERNARD’S/LOURDES CENTRAL CATHOLIC ALUMNI ASSOCIATION!

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
Pete Bataillon ’69
Knights of Columbus
Misy Fulton
Our Alumni of the Year is the Honorable Pete Bataillon. Pete graduated from Lourdes with the class of 1969. He then graduated from Northwest Missouri State and Creighton University. He is currently a District Court Judge and resides in Omaha.
This year our Stewardship of Faith award recognizes our local Knights of Columbus. For years our Knights have supported a culture of faith and of life for our entire Catholic community; including our students.
Our Volunteer of the Year this year is Misy Fulton. Misy is quick to share her gifts in service of our students, families, faculty and staff at Lourdes. Misy has served on the Lourdes Activities Association, chaired post-prom and numerous class projects for our Lourdes Event. Misy is always working behind the scenes with a joyful attitude to help with teacher appreciation, stewardship activities, team meals, senior night recognition, and so many other activities. Misy also helps coach our youth basketball teams and lead the basketball skills camps. Misy does small things with great love. Her valuable contributions to our school are a beautiful example of our volunteers that quietly yet faithfully offer their services and support to our school. Thank you Misy for all you do and for being such an important part of our Lourdes family.
Pete comes from a large family and out of gratitude for their parents’ sacrifice in sending them all to Lourdes, he and his family provide a financial aid scholarship each year for a student at Lourdes. For many years, Pete has organized the Annual Alumni Golf Tournament; which serves as both a fundraiser for our school and a way to strengthen our alumni association. We are grateful for our many alumni, like Pete, who give back to our school. Pete Bataillon is a proud Lourdes alumni and is generous in his efforts to support future generations at Lourdes and grow our alumni association.
The Knights support religious education opportunities and activities for our students. They share their time and talents to host fun activities, help with the postprom fundraiser, and help at our Lourdes Event each year. The Knights of Columbus have also been generous benefactors to our school over the years; supporting building projects, scholarships, the Lourdes Event, and numerous special needs and projects.

The goal for this year’s Annual Appeal was $200,000 and we are thrilled to share that we far exceeded that and raised $401,886! In January, a generous benefactor offered $200,000 in matching funds if we were able to meet our annual appeal goal. Your generosity helped secure these matching funds and provide critical support for Lourdes Central Catholic School. The Annual Appeal provides essential support for virtually every aspect of our school - tuition assistance, teacher salaries, classroom resources, athletics, fine arts, and much more. Tuition covers only 40% of the cost to educate a child at Lourdes. Your yearly gift to the Annual Appeal helps bridge the gap between tuition income and the actual cost of an education at Lourdes Central Catholic, allowing us to continue to make Catholic education accessible and affordable for our families. The success of the Annual Appeal is a beautiful testament of faith in our mission and support of our school by our alumni, friends of Lourdes, parents, grandparents, and faculty/staff. The impact of your gift will benefit every student and continue to build on the legacy of Lourdes Central Catholic School. Thank you! Brooke Chaney, Advancement Director

Legacy Society Throughout the history of Lourdes Central Catholic School, planned gifts and bequests have proven critical to support Lourdes Central Catholic’s greatest needs and priorities. The Lourdes Central Catholic Legacy Society honors and recognizes those who have helped support the mission of the school through a bequest or planned donation. Planned gifts have a major impact and allow Lourdes Central Catholic to continue to educate future generations both spiritually and academically. Planned giving creates opportunities for you to support Lourdes in ways that are meaningful to you, while also planning for the financial needs of your family. We are so grateful to our alumni and all those who have made a gift to Lourdes throughout the years and the lasting impact your gifts have on our students and our school. If you would like more information about planned giving or have already made a future gift intention to Lourdes, please contact Brooke Chaney at 402-8736154 or brooke-chaney@cdolinc.net. You can also complete the form at the right and mail it directly to the school.

‘ Due to health concerns and despite the uncertain times and challenges faced by many families today, this year’s annual fundraiser gala was a success. With the support of our sponsors, Lourdes family, and friends, the on-line event brought in $72,347 for our school and $7,980 for the Fund-A-Need (see below). Overall, our results were amazing given the last minute change of venue! The funds generated highlight the loyalty and generosity of the Lourdes Central Catholic family now more than ever. Your support allows our school to provide a Christ-Centered environment where our students thrive in their spiritual, academic, and social growth in a supportive, engaging atmosphere for all. On behalf of the entire Lourdes Central Catholic community, thank you for your generous support of the 2020 Lourdes Event and your commitment to Lourdes Central Catholic! We look forward to next spring when we are all able to gather and celebrate this annual event.
Each year at the Lourdes Event we have a “Fund-a-need”, a special project that isn't part of our operating budget, but a need for our school and for our students. This year our fund-a-need project is to replace the 55 lockers outside our school library. The current lockers are over 30 years old and are in need or replacement after the wear and tear of years of use, they are rusting, bent, and most no longer open or close properly. Through our Lourdes Event, we were able to raise funds to replace 42 lockers! We still have 13 lockers to fund. For $210 you can replace an old locker with a brand new one! With your donation, you also have the opportunity to dedicate the new locker to your favorite saint! Each locker will bear a saint's name who will serve as the patron saint for the lucky student who has that locker each year! If you are interested in donating a locker, please contact brooke-chaney@cdolinc.net or 402-873-6154. You can also donate to the locker project through our website, www.lourdescentralcatholic.org
