Brisbane Inner North Locals We deliver to the right people and serve the local community with relevant information

We know that it has been a rough time for a lot of businesses and for a lot of locals. The current COVID-19 crisis has caused many businesses to close their doors and for people to isolate. Let’s do the right thing – stay safe and support each other as much as we can. As much as possible we are assisting the businesses and residents in Nundah and its surrounding suburbs. Now is the time to try and help each other… part of this is by following the health and government guidelines.

We’ve created a Facebook Group, called Loving Nundah Covid-19 Community Support where you can share ideas, tips and suggestions in a positive group. We’ll be sharing local news and updates on the Loving Nundah Facebook and Instagram pages constantly, and we’d love for you to share with us what your favourite businesses are doing, what residents are doing to keep spirits up and any good news you hear. Putting this issue of Loving Nundah together with no events to promote and so much uncertainty for what to expect in the coming weeks and months was a challenge. Megan and Michael – your Loving Nundah team – have been incredible. We also rely on our local businesses so that we can produce our magazine and update our website and social media pages. We do well when our local businesses do well. When they hurt, we hurt too. We have shed a few tears, been encouraged by the doers who are fighting through the pain and going beyond to help each other. Let’s continue to love and support Nundah together.

SHOP ONLINE Look for opportunities to purchase items online locally (with many retailers offering contact-free delivery). BUY GIFT CARDS Buying a gift card from a local business and saving it for future use is an immediate way to put cash into your favourite hair salon, restaurant or shop. Many offer online gift vouchers that can be emailed directly to you. TAKE PART IN ONLINE CLASSES From workouts to dance classes, there are many classes that have been moved online. If your local business offers this option, take it – you might learn a new skill.

Nundah Family Dentists Cameron Chau and Mark Smith opened their dental practice in Nundah in December 2004. After 15 years as Cameron Chau Mark Smith Dentists, they have undergone an exciting refresh and rebrand as Nundah Family Dentists. "This new name, Nundah Family Dentists, felt right for the style of practice we have become," says Cameron. Cameron and Mark are looking forward to offering their current and new clients a brand new website, which will offer convenient online bookings. "Although we've changed name, the practice is still privately owned and operated by Cameron and myself and we have the same great staff working with us," says Mark. "As owners and dentists, we've been able to provide continuity of care for our patients, with many we first met back in 2005 still coming to see us," says Mark. Cameron and Mark understand that visiting the dentist can be an anxious time for many people. It makes a real difference when they can see the same dentist they feel comfortable with, who knows them and their history. "Our patients feel comfortable with us as we've been settled in the Nundah area for over 15 years," says Cameron. "We love having our practice in Nundah and enjoy helping our clients overcome their anxiety so they can enjoy a pain-free and healthy smile." Mark and Cameron know it is an uncertain time at the moment as Australia and the world deals with the COVID-19 pandemic. "On top of our usual high standards of infection control, we have taken additional steps to mimimise the risk to patients and staff," says Mark.

"It is important to maintain your oral health, so if you have a concern or dental emergency, please call our office. We will be following direction on the services we can offer during this time and will ensure that the health and safety of our patients and staff are our top priority." Cameron and Mark will be launching a new website, Facebook page and Instagram page in the coming weeks and look forward to your suggestions on what type of content you would like to see. Keeping your eyes healthy During this time of public health concern induced by COVID-19, it is important to remember some healthy tips regarding your eyes, in relation to wearing contact lenses. Common causes of contact lens-related infections include: • Not replacing your contact lenses when you ought to – wearing a 'dirty' contact lens significantly increases your chance of infection. • Overwearing your contact lenses – if you are at home, now is a good time to give your eyes a break and let your eyes breathe. • If you are sick with a cold or flu or feeling unwell, stay well clear of your contact lenses. You do not want to transfer anything to your eyes. • Always wash your hands thoroughly when handling your contact lenses. Eyecare Plus Nundah is an independent optometry practice - a small business. The Australian Government's COVID-19 Stimulus Package The Australian Government has released a Stimulus Package to support certain businesses and individuals due to the impact of COVID-19. The business measures are designed to support certain small businesses with ongoing cashflow assistance and the ongoing employment of staff.

Stimulating the economy is also key in the stimulus package with measures designed to encourage businesses to bring forward expenditure on plant and equipment through temporary changes to accelerated depreciation and the instant asset writeoff threshold. The individual measures are also designed to stimulate the economy by delivering a one off tax-free payment of $750 for those who receive income support (such as social security benefits). The ATO will also implement a series of administrative measures to assist Australians experiencing financial difficulty as a result of Coronavirus. If you have any questions on how this impacts you, please contact the DFK Hirn Newey Office via phone on 3266 1488 or email mail@dfkhn.com.au. How the Coronavirus affects you and your property Buying? What do I need to know? Buyers who are in very secure jobs are actually in an improved position because the overall market is weaker. The Coronavirus situation will take out a group of buyers – those adopting a wait-and-see approach or those simply unable to buy due to reduced income. But there's another group of buyers: those who are in jobs but who face uncertainty about how Coronavirus will affect their pay or whether they will keep their job at all. Selling? What do I need to know? You need to appreciate that your open home attendee numbers may reduce but the quality of the buyers will increase. When we identify the genuine buyer, we know they will be hungry, committed and organised with their finance. For example, on two separate occasions during this outbreak, we have presented one client with five offers for consideration and another with four offers for consideration. Both of these properties were located in Nundah. If you are looking to buy or sell, let me help navigate you through this unique time. Fitstop at home It’s important to keep moving and keep active during this crisis.

The benefits of 'NEAT' exercise The benefits of exercise and of remaining active are widely known. With all entertainment and large gatherings cancelled, including kids sport, and many more people being asked to self-isolate, we need to remember to keep moving. The ripple effects to our health and wellbeing may be felt for many years to come. Get your NEAT up where you can, however you can. NEAT is Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis or the energy you expend in non-eating, sleeping or exercising ways. For example, when you type an email, walk to the fridge or lift up your children – this is all NEAT and can contribute to longerterm health benefits, particularly if your usual activities have been canned. Some creative ways that our members get their NEAT up: • Dance with the kids • Play with the dog

How to treat armyworms Advice from Matthew Pinkey, Hendra Hardware Everyone loves a beautifully manicured, lush green lawn, but what if your yard is progressively turning brown despite receiving adequate water? If so, you may have a thriving population of ravenous armyworms. Armyworms get their name because they move like an army, conquering one lawn after another. They have been known to annihilate entire lawns overnight, so it's a good idea to act quickly if you notice your lawn turning brown. To check whether you have Armyworms, lay a towel or a blanket on a patch of lawn at night and look underneath it the next day (armyworms are nocturnal feeders, and the towel will fool them into thinking it is still night). If armyworms have set up camp in your yard, you don't have to resort to synthetic chemical solutions. Instead, try an environmentally friendly product like eco-neem. Eco-neem, an organic insecticide formulated from extracts of the neem tree, works by suppressing the appetite of the grubs so they starve

to death. It also inhibits their growth so they cannot moult successfully, thereby stopping the breeding cycle. Eco-neem will also help control other grubs and insects.

One of the reasons an organic product like eco-neem is preferable to a synthetic chemical poison is because it is safe to use around pets, birds and lizards, so you don't have to worry if your chooks or opportunistic magpies swoop in to feed on the dying grubs. Perhaps even more importantly, it won't harm bees and other insects that are beneficial and integral to the eco-system. Armyworms only chew the leaf of the grass, leaving the root system intact, so once you get the problem under control, your lawn will eventually grow back. If you can't wait that long to enjoy your yard again, you might want to think about returfing.

International Women's Day 2020 event a success Nundah Neighbourhood Centre hosted a rock-painting event to celebrate International Women's Day on Tuesday 10 March. Fifteen wonderful ladies attended and got creative in an activity that combined art with a message of women's empowerment in keeping with this year's theme of gender equality.

The event included morning tea and lunch and provided an opportunity for socialisation and connection for women in the community. The activity initiated inspiring conversations about women's achievements and issues that are important for women in today's society. The feedback from those who attended was very positive, describing the day as "togetherness, helpful helpers and strength of friendship", "a very friendly environment where I met awesome new women and shared stories", and "enjoyed the chats with the ladies and painting my rocks". Women described feeling empowered, supported, confident and understood. Rocks that were painted for this event have been left in Nundah community spaces as part of a worldwide painted rocks movement which aims to spread messages of hope, kindness and happiness by leaving painted rocks in public places for people to find. So keep your eyes peeled in Nundah and you may be lucky enough to find one of the creations!

Nundah Neighbourhood Centre closure Due to the current COVID-19 situation and resulting escalation of public health measures to slow the spread and impact of the virus, the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and Brisbane North Community Legal Service has made the difficult decision to close its doors to the public as of the 19 March 2020. This will be in place until further notice with regular assessments on the safest practice measures in delivering services. During this time the following will be put on hold: • Room Hire - if you have a booking please contact us by phone or email • Groups and other activities offered by the Centre including English Language Classes, Community Lunch, sewing and yoga • Visiting programs and activities • Wednesday Evening Walk-In Legal Service • Drop-in services including phone, computer etc • St Vincent's emergency relief visiting service - please contact them for a phone appointment on 1800 846 643 • Face-to-face appointments and walk-in enquires

We will be offering telephone legal appointments to those that have a booked appointment until further notice. We are working with our community to do anything we can to help our most vulnerable members during this time and will endeavour to continue to maintain telephone, email and social media contact. If you have any questions or do require legal advice or other assistance please contact our office.

ANZAC Day - Saturday 25 April 2020 RSL Queensland cares deeply about the welfare of their members, the veteran community and the general public. The Coronavirus pandemic is something that is of great concern to many in the community, particularly among the older generation. On 16 March, RSL Queensland advised its Sub Branches to cancel ANZAC Day commemorations in light of the emerging Coronavirus public health emergency. RSL Queensland now calls on Australians to honour the service of our Defence forces, past and present, by standing at the end of their driveways for a minute's silence this ANZAC Day. With ANZAC Day services, events and parades cancelled across the nation due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, RSL Queensland State President Tony Ferris said such a display of solidarity would send a powerful message of support to Australia's Defence community. "This is an idea that has gathered momentum in social media, and we agree it's a brilliant way to collectively honour the dedication, commitment and sacrifice of our service people – even though we cannot physically be together," Mr Ferris said.

Made with love in Nundah.

He said Australians could safely commemorate ANZAC Day by standing at the end of their driveway or on a balcony at 6am and observing a minute's silence. "This ANZAC Day, I'd like to see all Australians participate in a different kind of Dawn Service, an intimate reflection conducted on a mass scale that unites us all in the ANZAC spirit."
