Anniversary Gala Guess Who’s Turning 30?

The La Porte Education Foundation will celebrate a major milestone this year—30 years of supporting teachers in students in La Porte ISD. Since its incorporation in 1993, more than $2.7 million has been awarded to more than 2,000 teachers for innovative classroom grants that help to bring extras to classrooms such as chemistry demonstration kits, digital thermometers, and reading pens to help struggling readers. The only celebration befitting such an accomplishment is a big party—no, better yet, a gala! The 30th Anniversary Gala will take place on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023, at the Galveston Island Convention Center at the San Luis Resort. The keynote speaker will be Mr. Russell Ybarra. He is the president and CEO of Gringo’s TEX MEX, Jimmy Changas, The Lunch Box, & Burger Libre. He is also a La Porte High School graduate and a 2018 La Porte ISD Distinguished Alumni Honoree. Go to www.tickettailor.com/events/ laporteeducationfoundation/940649 to sign up as a sponsor for the event or to purchase tickets. It is going to be a Phantom Night! We look forward to seeing you on Oct. 14.

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits as we settle in on another exciting school year. It gives me immense pleasure to share with you that the start of the school year has gone exceptionally well, and our commitment to providing a safe and enriching educational environment remains stronger than ever. One of the cornerstones of our dedication to our students’ well-being is the ongoing progress of the LP Bond 2023 projects. These initiatives are crucial in enhancing the safety and infrastructure of our schools. I am pleased to inform you that these projects are well underway, and they include significant security enhancements such as protective film on Dr. Walter Jackson windows, vestibule improvements, the implementation of a panic button system, and Superintendent of Schools additional perimeter fencing throughout our district. Additionally, I’m proud to say that there is now a dedicated law enforcement officer stationed at every campus — every day. I extend our heartfelt appreciation to the La Porte Police Department and other collaborating agencies for their invaluable support in fortifying our school security. Another significant development we’ve witnessed is the transformation of the former Bulldog Stadium site. The site is now clear, and we are excited to witness the construction of our new stadium. This state-of-the-art facility will undoubtedly provide our students and community with a first-class venue for various events and activities for decades to come. I want to reiterate my gratitude to our incredible community for your unwavering support of LP Bond 2023, which has made this vision a reality. As we navigate through this football season, I want to extend our appreciation to Barbers Hill ISD for graciously hosting our home games at Eagle Stadium. Furthermore, I am immensely proud of our districtwide STEM program, which operates in dedicated laboratories on every campus. This program is a testament to our commitment to providing world-class academics. Award Winning Musician Winner of Inaugural LPHS Band Composition Contest 2023 was the first year La Porte High School held the LPHS Band Composition Contest. To enter the contest, students had a few months to complete and submit a composition project for full band, requiring participants to write parts for 13 different instruments, plus percussion. Four students entered the contest this year. The winning composition had to have clear melody, well-written and achievable parts, and be interesting to the listener. He quickly rose in placement throughout his years, holding positions in our Symphonic Band (second band) and Wind Ensemble (Varsity band), even performing solos on several concert programs. His involvement has always been at the highest level; he has performed in many solo and ensemble contests in addition to his involvement in marching band and concert band. Darrel also held positions as flute section leader and woodwind captain. He has also been writing music for an Instagram page he operates. You can hear some of this influence in his award-winning composition.” Sneed said he originally wrote Escape with no intention other than coming up with something to turn in for the composition contest. “While writing the early stages, the melody sounded as if you were running from something. This gave me the idea to make it sound as if you were trying to escape a reoccurring problem which at the end, you’re ultimately forced to handle,” he said. While Sneed has written other music pieces, Escape is his first multi-piece composition. Sneed said, “Writing for instruments that I don’t play was a very difficult process. La Porte Bond 2023

La Porte ISD voters passed Propositions A, B and C of the proposed 2023 Bond by landslide margins, approving the $235 million package to address aging facilities, safety and security, technology and infrastructure, and athletics. Proposition A passed by a margin of almost 80 percent, with 1,413 votes in favor and 399 against. Voters approved Proposition B by a similar margin – 1,411 to 400. Proposition C passed by more than a 73 percent margin with 1,316 votes in favor and 485 against. “We are so thankful to have the support of our La Porte ISD community,” said Superintendent Dr. Walter Jackson. “The last major investment in our schools was over nine years ago. And all these projects will be able to get done without increasing district taxes” Proposition A includes districtwide safety and security upgrades, addressing aging buildings with funds for district-wide maintenance and renovations, new buses and district vehicles, replacing technology infrastructure over the next 10 years, and constructing a new Bulldog Development Centre. Proposition B replaces student and teacher technology devices on a regular replacement schedule over the next 10 years. Proposition C will pay for a new Bulldog Stadium on the existing site. The state of Texas doesn’t provide funding for facilities. By law, bond funds may not be used to fund daily operating expenses or salaries. Bond funds may only be used for projects approved by district voters. “The community is expected to find a way to build new schools or expand existing schools when faced with these issues,” said Dr. Jackson. “We’ve worked hard to manage funds conservatively and will continue to be good stewards for the La Porte ISD community.” “We’re grateful to our board members and all our voters La Porte ISD Insider • 12

for the support they provide to our schools, our students, and staff,” Dr. Jackson said. “This bond communicates the values our district places on education and our continued commitment to La Porte ISD students and teachers. This is a wonderful community that I’m proud to serve, and we look forward to the future success of all La Porte Bulldogs.” Demolition on Bulldog Stadium is already completed and ground work for the new construction is already underway.

School Safety Safety and Security is one of our top priorities here in La Porte ISD. Below we have highlighted some of our areas of focus for this school year. SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS This school year, LPISD will have school resource officers on all campuses. The district, in partnership wiht the City of La Porte and other municipalities, will ensure that officers are present each day. Additionally, the La Porte Police Department is required to make daily rounds of audits to the exteriors of each campus in La Porte ISD. This will enhance the presence at each campus throughout the day. SILENT PANIC SYSTEM LPISD is equipped with a full silent panic system at each campus. Staff members can initiate a panic alert with a click or push of a button. This system notifies district administration & local emergency responders. This new system will enhance communication and response time between the school district and local authorities. CRISISALERT BADGES Each staff member in La Porte ISD is equipped with a panic badge. Our CrisisAlert Solution empowers teachers and administrators to act and respond with confidence in every situation, from the everyday to the extreme. When educators and children feel safe and secure, they can focus on their goals: learning and academic achievement.

SECURITY FILM Each campus in La Porte ISD has security film on exterior windows and doors as well as controlled access vestibules. These add further layers of protection to each of our campuses.

TRAINING FOR ALL We understand that training is the most important element of our LPISD safety program. Staff, students, and substitutes spend time training on emergency methods throughout the year. The goal is for the school community to understand our processes so as to ensure that everyone remains safe at all times. The district’s safety department spends countless hours providing professional development and implementing tabletops and drills at each La Porte ISD site. La Porte ISD Insider • 14

CTE/STEM Spotlight This year LPISD’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) program is focusing on expanding work-based learning (WBL) opportunities for students in their final year of a CTE program. WBL can include participation in Career Preparation, which consists of time spent at an approved training/job site, as well as classroom instruction. It can also include participation in a Practicum course, specific to a career cluster, that combines classroom instruction with learning experiences in a lab setting or at an approved training site. Examples of WBL opportunities students will participate in this year include providing classroom support at La Porte Elementary, volunteering at La Porte Animal Adoption Center and shelter, and working in the kitchen at local restaurants such as Gringo’s.

STEM on the Rise In La Porte ISD, STEM is expanding and growing. All 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders in the district are experiencing hands-on STEM challenges every 9 weeks in our STEM Labs at each campus. This year, we have Lego Robotics Teams on all 13 campuses in the district. During the 2022-2023 school year, LPISD students received 13 awards at the FIRST Robotics competitions. At the High School, our LPHS Robotics Team was the winner of the 2023 Jack Kamden Imagery Award. This award celebrates the attractiveness in engineering and outstanding visual aesthetic integration of machine and team apperance.

eSports in LPISD La Porte ISD has always been at the forefront of offering innovative opportunities to its students. Understanding the growing influence of eSports in our society, the school administration at Lomax Junior High took a bold step by introducing an eSports program in 2022. The goal was to provide a platform for students to not only pursue their passion for gaming but also develop essential skills such as teamwork, communication, and problemsolving. One of the highlights of Lomax’s eSports program is its Overwatch 2 team, which secured the coveted title of State Champions in the program’s very first year. Led by dedicated coaches Justin Robbins and Justin Morgan and supported by an enthusiastic school community, the team of Dawson Lewis, Steven Garcia, Kayleigh Weisinger, Ean Lopez, Enrique Guajardo Salinas, Brendan Robbins, and Elian Cerda displayed exceptional skill, strategy, and teamwork throughout the season, which ended with a state championship. While the Overwatch 2 team was making waves, Lomax’s Super Smash Bros. competitors were not far behind. Five members of the school’s Super Smash Bros. team reached the State tournament, and Drake Leija secured the second-place finish, narrowly missing the top spot. Lomax Junior High’s eSports program has not only brought home trophies but has also enriched the lives of its students in various ways. By participating in eSports, students have developed a range of essential skills, including: •

Teamwork: eSports require seamless coordination among team members, promoting effective teamwork and communication.

Critical Thinking: Gamers must analyze complex situations and make quick decisions, which fosters critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Sportsmanship: eSports teach students the value of sportsmanship, humility in victory, and grace in defeat.

Time Management: Balancing practice, schoolwork, and other activities teaches valuable

La Porte ISD Insider • 18

time management skills. As Lomax Junior High’s eSports program continues to grow, there is an undeniable sense of excitement and optimism in the air. The accomplishments of the Overwatch 2 and Super Smash Bros. teams in their inaugural year have set a high bar for future teams. The program is expected to expand to include more games and attract even more passionate gamers from within the school’s community. This program has not only allowed students to pursue their gaming passions but has also instilled valuable

life skills that will serve them well beyond the gaming arena. As Lomax continues to nurture its eSports stars, the future of this program shines bright with endless possibilities.

Project LAUNCH College courses are on the horizon for La Porte ISD students! Not only do high school students take dual enrollment courses while at La Porte High School, but beginning in the fall of 2023, some elementary and junior high students will too! Through a partnership with the University of HoustonClear Lake called Project LAUNCH, gifted and talented (GT) students in grades 5 and 6 will be able to explore their interests through rigorous, project-based learning in courses of their choosing in computer science and technology, fine arts, and environmental science. During Project LAUNCH, students will select two courses to study during the school year, and will spend 15 hours in each semester at the university learning from professors and graduate students who are experts in the topics. The mini-courses are designed to be investigative, challenging, and highly engaging for students, and will culminate with a showcase of student learning projects displayed for families and other students at the end of each semester. “Students will have a chance to learn about topics that they would not normally study in their current curriculum. This gives them a chance to explore their interests deeply and will allow them to dig in at their own pace,” said Julie Abram, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning. Most of all, gifted and talented students from across the district will have the opportunity to learn with and alongside their GT peers during these learning events at UHCL. Students from all campuses will come together to share this learning opportunity at the university. “Providing GT students an opportunity to learn with their GT peers is the best way to ensure learning is at the highest levels of challenge,” Abram added. “Our students will meet new friends from other campuses who share their interests and abilities, and as a result, their learning in these courses will be rich.” Project LAUNCH officially launches in mid-September for approximately 125 students.

Reading Challenge La Porte ISD is entering its second year to set a goal for reading minutes with Beanstack. During our inaugural year, students and staff exceeded the district goal of reading 1 million minutes. During the summer, readers accrued over 60,000 minutes of reading. Our goal for the 2023-24 school year is 1.5 million minutes, and we hope to exceed that goal as well. All students and staff in La Porte ISD can participate in our “Readers are Leaders” reading challenge. Each month we offer multiple challenges that allow readers to select books that are of interest to them. Please follow us on X (Twitter) @LPISDLibraries to keep up with our progress this year. When posting your reading progress, please tag us using the following hashtags: #readersareleaders #everychildreadsleadssucceeds.

Summer Reading Challenge a Huge Success This summer, La Porte ISD challenged our students to a summer reading challenge. Students were asked to read or listen to books and then track their reading in the Beanstack App. On Thursday, Aug, 31, students who competed in this challenge were treated to a surprise guest at the Bulldog Centre, Orbit! Students learned about the importance of reading and had the opportunity to meet and play games with the Astros mascot. We are so proud of our students for reading in the summer and look forward to seeing those reading numbers continue to grow throughout the year in Beanstack.

Partners in Education Community Partners Make a Difference Community partners make a huge difference in La Porte ISD. From donating school supplies to delivering treats for staff members to providing attendance incentives for students, businesses and organizations in the La Porte area are demonstrating their support for our schools in many ways. When the La Porte ISD Partners in Education program was refreshed in the fall of 2022, area companies and groups were quick to get on board. Some decided to “adopt” a particular school as a Campus Business Partner, while others chose to help as needed districtwide. Partners include both small and large businesses/industries as well as churches, community groups and individuals. “We have many opportunities available for those who would like to ‘adopt’ a school, a classroom, or a team, or partner with the district in some way,” said Terri Cook, coordinator of the Partners in Education program. “These partnerships mean so much to our students and staff, helping them to know that our community stands behind them in support of education.” The HELPS (Help Empower La Porte Students) mentoring program also is in its second year at La Porte ISD elementary schools and has expanded to the Baker Sixth Grade Campus for 2023-24. The focus of HELPS is to create a safe space for students to experience warm, supportive encouragement from a caring adult. Mentors make the commitment to spend 30 minutes each week, during lunch or elective time, with the student selected to be their mentee. Additional mentors are still needed. More information on the Partners in Education and HELPS mentoring programs is available at www.lpisd. org/our-district/partners-in-education or by calling 281-604-7084.
